he Haven was founded in 2001 by local veterinarn Dr. Teresa Marshall. Our 501 (c)3 non-profit provides a shelter and finds adoptive homes for abused, neglected, and homeless animals while treating them with love, respect and medical care. Through education and volunteer programs, we promote community awareness of pet overpopulation and responsibility.

The Haven is a sanctuary for animals that will be cared for regardless of how long it takes to find them loving homes.

ON THE COVER

This adoptable and adventurous 1.5 year old Beagle mix has an amazing nose. He can detect the smallest amount of peanut butter no matter how well it is hidden. Like his name, Big Boy has a BIG heart. This Sherlock Holmes wannabe enjoys walks and detecting new scents along the trail. He doesn’t need a Twitter account to follow you, he just uses his heart.

Happy Tails: from Tragedy to Triumph

One-year-old Bulldog mix, Rivers, is a Haven success story, one of tragedy to triumph.

Last August, after being hit by a car and left on the side of the road, Rivers was found and brought to The Haven struggling to walk and unable to use his back leg. He was taken immediately to the vet for evaluation where x-rays revealed a severe break with splintering of the bone. Initial surgery failed and specialists were called to place an apparatus on the outside of the leg, attaching it to the pins from the previous surgery. Without this surgery to help the healing process, amputation would be necessary. After a few weeks of healing, Rivers underwent a final surgery to remove the apparatus. Rivers made a full recovery, and gained a furrever home through adoption!

Rivers new family had recently lost their dog and, when they saw Rivers on The Haven’s Facebook page, they immediately started the adoption process. They also shared that throughout the adoption process, Chris Stanfield, Haven adoption coordinator, kept them up-to-date on Rivers’ progress.

Vet bills for three surgeries totaled $1871.

Because of our caring donors, Rivers had a happy ending. Donations are important in the care of every injured, abused or neglected animal. Without them, countless animals wouldn’t get what they need, and families might never find their perfect pet. According to Rivers’ new mom, “He is a big toddler, a real mama’s boy and loves kids! He is a character! He has grown so much and loves to play!”

Furfillment: Finding Happiness at The Haven

Life, liberty, the pursuit of…furfillment. People pursue things they think will make them happy and satisfied. This can lead to debt and clutter, among other things that may or may not include fulfillment. Those involved with the animals at The Haven have discovered happiness, or furfillment, by doing everything they can to help those animals.

“Happiness begins with each of us giving of ourselves to make a difference in the lives of others,” says The Haven’s

Executive Director Mike Graham. Donating funds for medical and daily care of the abused, neglected and homeless dogs and cats or committing your time in one of the many volunteer programs are ways you can give of yourself. Shopping at The Haven’s ReSale Shop is a fun way you can help. You can even get a discount if you’re a senior citizen or college student with two new promotions. {See How to Shop for an Animal}

The Haven is pursuing furfillment not only by helping as many animals in Baldwin County as possible, but by partnering with The Exceptional Foundation to help another community organization. {See Exceptional Treats}

People search for the right clothes or diet to make them happy. If they put that same effort into finding the right breed of dog, they and their pets would be happier, and there would be fewer homeless animals. {See Ask the Vet}

Ask the Vet: Shelter Pets Are Top “Breed” Choices

First and foremost, Dr. Marshall at Banfield in Spanish Fort stresses

that potential dog owners should assess their own lifestyle, and how they want the dog to fit into that lifestyle. For example, a toy poodle is not going to be the best kind of dog for an active person who enjoys hiking or being outdoors.

Dr. Marshall breaks breeds down into three types. Herding breeds, such as beagles or pointers, are considered “busy” dogs. They will always require a lot of exercise and stimulation. “Watch dogs,” such as Rottweiler’s or German shepherds are incredibly loyal dogs that demand a lot of time and attention from their owner - but not the amount of exercise as a herding breed dog.

Smaller dogs, those considered toy breeds, such as terriers or schnauzers, are bred to be companion dogs. They do not require a lot of exercise at all, and Above: Dr. Teresa Marshall, can be left alone for longer periods of time than a watch dog.

The healthiest dogs tend to be mutts due to heterosis, the body’s ability to keep only the best traits of each breed. Therefore, many of the dogs in shelters have the strongest genes from whichever breeds they come from. So when your family is ready for a dog, do your research, then check out The Haven’s adoptable dogs. You’re sure to find one that will fit your lifestyle.

How to Shop for an Animal

Shopping benefits only you and maybe a loved one you buy something for, right? Not if you shop at The Haven’s ReSale Shop. Since 2002, the ReSale Shop has been fulfilling the reason for its purchase: generating revenue to help the homeless animals at The Haven.

Besides the annual spring and fall yard sales, two weekly appreciation days have been added. Tuesdays are Senior Discount Days. Citizens 60 and over will receive 20% off their entire purchase. On Thursdays, aka College Appreciation Days, students will receive the 20% discount. Shoppers are asked to present IDs at time of purchase.

But prices are already great, so no one is left out of saving on great items like jewelry, books, glassware, artwork, antiques, home décor items and more.

Donations and volunteers are welcome year round.

For more information, call 929-1911 or just drop by for a visit. You could find that purrfect item for you dorm room, new home or the home you want to redecorate. Make the purchase, and not only will you have something new to enjoy. You’ll be helping a homeless animal.

Exceptional Treats

The Haven has teamed up with new friends from the Exceptional Foundation of Daphne to provide special treats for special canines.

The Exceptional Foundation, a nonprofit for special needs individuals, is dedicated to helping “exceptional citizens” and their families with programs and support they need. Executive Director Jennifer Flad is excited to encourage the partnership with The Haven, stating “This endeavor allows our group to foster an awareness of community service. EFGC is proud to be baking with a purpose as we prepare our “Exceptional Treats.” As one of our participants told me, ‘I love making healthy snacks for dogs!’.”

Michael Graham, Executive Director of The Haven, said, “We are proud to be able to join forces with this organization. This project offers an opportunity for the Exceptional Foundation clients to make such a positive impact on the care of animals in our facility.”

Exceptional Treats are created by those who benefit from the Foundation’s programs using fresh natural ingredients. The treats are sold for $5 and 25 percent of the net proceeds go towards offsetting medical care expenses for animals sheltered at The Haven. To purchase these wonderful goodies for your favorite pup, come to Haven and Exceptional Foundation events held throughout the year, including The Haven’s pet adoption events or visit the Fairhope Farmers Market this May through July.

Planned Giving for You and Your Pets

You have spent your life doing great things, and as you age, your ability to “give” also ages. All of us have goals and when we reach retirement, many of us continue to contribute our time but we tend to be more cautious with donations as we are now living on a “fixed income.” The causes we have championed begin to suffer.
