Mickey the Office Cat: FINDING LOVE — AGAIN
Mickey, a charming 10-year-old orange tabby, has lived quite the life. Found wandering the streets of Fairhope in June 2015, he was adopted just two months later by a devoted dad who gave him a life filled with love, comfort, and endless pampering. For nearly a decade, Mickey was a constant companion — until his beloved human passed away, leaving him once again in search of connection.
That’s when Cindy from Fortitude Business Solutions in Daphne, AL came along, looking for just the right cat to join her workplace. She believed an older cat like Mickey would bring calm, warmth, and a touch of feline magic to the office. “Every office needs an office cat,” Cindy shared. “Mickey boosts morale and helps everyone feel a little more at ease.”

Now, Mickey is thriving once again — trading windowsills at home for sunny desks and a team of new admirers who love him just as much as his first dad did.

FROM BOUNCES TO BELONGING:
Billy Ray Finds His Forever Home
Billy Ray wasn’t your average puppy — he was a whirlwind of joy, energy, and boundless affection. Found as a stray, this sweet, spirited pup quickly stole hearts at The Haven. But as lovable as he was, his high energy proved to be a challenge. He was adopted three times — and heartbreakingly returned twice by families unprepared for his exuberance.
Then came Donna and her son. They weren’t just looking for a dog — they were looking for joy, for connection, for a reason to smile again. Where others saw “too much,” they saw exactly what they needed.
Billy Ray brought laughter, purpose, and healing into their lives. He didn’t just find a home — he found his people.
Today, Billy Ray is more than a pet. He’s a best friend, a constant companion, and, as Donna lovingly says, “the best therapist we never knew we needed.” His story reminds us that every animal has a purpose — and sometimes, it takes a few tries to find where they truly belong.

Keeping Pets with Families
The Haven’s Project PAWS (Pet Alteration & Wellness Services) is changing lives across our community — one paw at a time. This vital program provides spay/neuter surgeries and core vaccinations to pet families experiencing financial hardship — many of whom might otherwise have to choose between caring for their pet or covering basic needs. Without access to this support, some families may have no choice but to surrender or rehome a pet they love simply because they can’t afford essential care.
By preventing unwanted litters and supporting pet wellness, Project PAWS eases the burden on overcrowded shelters while helping beloved pets stay healthy and at home. The program works in harmony with local veterinarians by serving the community’s most underserved areas — extending a lifeline where it’s needed most.
Together, we’re building a healthier, more compassionate community — because every family deserves access to quality pet care. With your support, we can reach even more pets and people in need. Please consider making a gift to The Haven today to help expand programs like Project PAWS. Every dollar makes a difference.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Opal Smith
Since returning to Fairhope in 2022, Opal Smith has been a dedicated Haven volunteer — focusing her heart (and humor) on helping cats. A lifelong “cat person,” Opal proudly serves as a Haven Animal Transporter (HAT), bringing adoptable pets to and from their veterinary appointments. She also cared for adoptable cats at our partner pet store and generously volunteers her time and talent at Haven fundraisers.
One of her favorite moments was seeing a 13-year-old cat she’d grown attached to be adopted by a couple seeking another senior companion.
At The Haven, volunteers like Opal are the heart of our mission, and we’re incredibly grateful for her compassion, dedication, and unwavering support.

“Without Project PAWS, I couldn’t have afforded care for my four rescue pets. The Haven gave me peace of mind — and gave my animals a chance to live long, healthy lives. This program is a blessing to families like mine.” — Danielle, Project PAWS participant

PAWSITIVE PROGRESS:
Lifesaving on the Rise
From January through May 2025, The Haven and the City of Fairhope Animal Shelter experienced remarkable growth in lifesaving efforts. With animal intakes up 24% and outcomes soaring by 45% at The Haven, the shelter is meeting rising demand with compassion, innovation, and grit. Adoption numbers climbed, new programs like Project PAWS and Fix’n Ferals expanded access to services, and transfer partnerships flourished — ensuring more pets find safety and second chances.
For those new to our work, The Haven is proud to manage operations at the City of Fairhope Animal Shelter through a public-private partnership. While the City retains responsibility for animal control services (field response), The Haven provides professional, compassionate care for all impounded animals. This model not only saves taxpayer dollars but also ensures Fairhope’s pets and residents receive high-quality services. It’s a collaborative approach that has been replicated and admired by other communities across the country.
Behind the scenes, upgrades to our Mobile Adoption Rescue Unit (MARU), a revamped Haven van, and AI-powered customer support have boosted efficiency and outreach. Financial support from generous donors and sponsors like Tito’s Handmade Vodka is fueling this momentum.

Even as intake pressures grow, The Haven continues to lead with a forwardthinking, no-kill philosophy — proving that with heart, community, and strategy, we can make every paw count.
