A WISH FULFILLED

On May 5th, The Haven and Mr. John Soderberg, owner of JHS Bookstore in Foley, jointly held a celebration and pet adoption in memory of his wife, veterinarian Dr. Diane Camilleri, on the anniversary of her birth. The event was held at Mr. Soderberg’s books and collectibles store.

Dr. Camilleri was a bright and remarkable woman ahead of her time. A native of New York City, she obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating at the top of her class as valedictorian. She was a veterinarian at an animal shelter in New York City, after which she became a Professor of Veterinary Technology at the City University of New York, a position she held for many years.

Dr. Camilleri had a great love of animals and cherished their two cats, Penny and Shelly. Upon her retirement, she and her husband relocated from NYC to Florence, Alabama, and then to Foley in 2006, where they opened JHS Bookstore. About his wife’s thoughts of The Haven, Mr. S. said, “She was impressed by The Haven’s progressive and effective programs and its “no-kill” status.” As I wanted to do something significant to honor her memory, The Haven was the perfect place for that. I look forward to a long and continuing partnership with The Haven.”

Also, in her honor, the Dr. Diane Camilleri Rescue Fund was established by her husband to assist The Haven with its mission of ending pet homelessness. Donations to the rescue fund may be made to The Haven, specifying the Dr. Diane Camilleri Rescue Fund, and also at the store anytime. An annual adoption event at JHS Bookstore will also be held to benefit The Haven. Michael Graham, Executive Director of The Haven, stated, "We are grateful to Mr. Soderberg for the very generous donation to establish the rescue fund, which will carry on the wonderful legacy of his wife.”

Charlie and Ollie

Charlie and Ollie were discovered alone in a deserted house, shaking with fear. They made their way to The Haven thanks to a Good Samaritan and animal advocate. Upon arriving, they were still determining whether to trust humans. After receiving tons of love, medical care, and getting fixed, they soon caught a potential adopter’s attention.

Rob visited The Haven looking to find himself a pet companion. His previous dog companion had passed away. Rob was now ready to meet some adoptable dogs. The first time Rob saw Charlie and Ollie, he knew they belonged together.

“They certainly have livened up our household,” Rob said. “Being young dogs, they play hard during the day, like enjoying wrestling matches with each other. In the evening, both Charlie and Ollie enjoy being lapdogs. Although they are siblings, they have very different personalities.

Hailey and Ryley

It was brought to the Haven's attention that two abandoned kittens were in a sad position. With a keen understanding of what to do, The Haven provided medical treatment and tender loving care. Hailey and Ryley were now healthy and happy, ready to find a forever home. A sense of excitement filled Bruce and Adelaide's hearts as they explored The Haven Animal Shelter in search of their new furry best friend. They were unsure of what they were looking for but certain that it was their destiny to welcome a new four-legged friend into their lives. Eventually, their search

The Haven is a brighter place thanks to the Hahns’ unwavering commitment. Jeremy and Darcy's passion and drive to make a difference for homeless animals is truly inspirational.

MONTHLY DONOR - BE THEIR HERO: Become a Monthly Donor

"Monthly giving is a great way for caring individuals to make a consistent and meaningful impact on homeless pets. Monthly donations can be used to fund long-term projects or programs. For example, a monthly donation can provide funds needed to provide ongoing care and support for homeless pets.”

Meet Frank, a Haven monthly donor who knows the value of his steady source of funding to support The Haven's lifesaving programs. Frank is a retired Vietnam veteran who shares his life with his wife, Lynn, and his adorable seven-and-a-half-year-old miniature Schnauzer, Boomer.

"We live in Fairhope and drove by The Haven one day to meet the devoted staff and ask how I could help," said Frank. “I learned of their need for steady donations, including donations of supplies like paper towels and bleach. You get a lot more from an animal than you can give. Pets provide peace for their human companions but especially for disabled veterans.

“Monthly donations provide a reliable source of income for The Haven, allowing the nonprofit to plan for the future and fund long-term projects. Make a difference in the lives of homeless pets by becoming a Haven monthly donor. "
