Gall Troseddau Casineb gael effaith ar bob gweithle a gellir effeithio ar neu dargedu staff mewn amrywiaeth o ffyrdd.

Hate Crime an have an impact in every workplace, and staff can be affected or targeted in a variety of ways.

For example;

Being directly targeted in their line of work

Being impacted by hate targeted at themselves in their personal lives, or at family and friends, and that stress being carried into the workplace.

As a witness to a hate incident.

As a witness to hate related events in wider society.

Workplaces and employers have a responsibility to their staff and teams to support their welfare and to manage the impact on the services they deliver.

Casineb

Profwyd bod troseddau a digwyddiadau casineb yn effeithio ar iechyd seicolegol pobl hyd at bedair gwaith yn drymach na mathau eraill o droseddau.

Mae'n drosedd sy'n seiliedig ar hunaniaeth, sy'n taro craidd pwy ydych chi.

Efallai y bydd rhai pobl yn cael profiad o gasineb unwaith, tra bydd eraill yn ei brofi’n gyson ac yn profi'r effaith gronnus ychwanegol.

Gall pobl brofi casineb gan ddieithriaid neu gan rywun maen nhw'n ei adnabod, er enghraifft cymydog neu ddefnyddiwr eu gwasanaethau. Gall casineb ddigwydd yn bersonol neu ar-lein.

Hate crimes and incidences have been proven to impact on people’s psychological health up to four times heavier than other crime types.

It is an identity based crime, that hits the core of who you are.

Some people may have a hate experience once, whilst others may experience it repeatedly and experience the additional cumulative impact.

People can experience hate from strangers or from someone they know, for example a neighbour or a user of their services. Hate can happen in-person or online.

There is a difference between a ‘hate crime’ and a ‘hate incident’

The harm caused by hateful experiences are the same whether the incident has been reported to the police (or not), and if enough evidence exists to prosecute (or not) – as a result, this guide covers the impact of all hateful experiences, irrespective of police or other agency involvement.

There are five protected strands in hate crime: Disability, Race, Religion and Faith, Sexual Orientation and Transgender Identity.

Impacts of hate / impact in the workplace

The impact of hate crime and incidences is very individual and personal. It can affect people in very different ways. It can have physical, emotional, psychological and financial impacts.

This can result in people being unwell in work, being absent or less able to focus and function as expected for their role.

In a survey of victims of hate crime in the workplace through Victim Support’s research platform VS Voice in 2024, respondents stated that mental health was the most significant impact.

The impacts of hate crime may affect how people perform in the workplace, if they feel they’re able to bring their whole selves to work, and their relationships with others.

Yn yr arolwg o ddioddefwyr troseddau casineb yn y gweithle, ni wnaeth y mwyafrif adrodd i’r heddlu.

‘Cyfeiriodd y rhai na wnaeth adrodd i’r heddlu at bryderon na fyddai’n cael ei gymryd o ddifrif, yn enwedig ar ôl i’r gweithle fethu â mynd i'r afael ag ef.’

Roedd eraill yn fodlon ar sut y gwnaeth eu gweithle ymdrin â'r mater ac wedi dewis peidio â mynd ag ef ymhellach.'

If someone has been specifically targeted in relation to their work, impacts can also be felt by their colleagues, service users and the whole service.

Everyone will experience their own unique impacts.

Hate crime and incidences can create genuine trauma in people, so it’s important to consider a trauma-informed approach.

In the 2024 survey, victims of hate crime in the workplace made several recommendations for places of work;

Specially trained staff on different areas of hate crime

Zero tolerance policies with no exceptions for older staff who have been in the service longer. It should make no difference.

A dedicated helpline without having to join a union.

Handling disclosures of hate in the workplace

In the survey of victims of hate crime in the workplace, the majority didn’t report to the police.

‘Those that didn’t report to the police cited concerns it wouldn’t be taken seriously, especially after the workplace failed to address it. Others were satisfied with how their workplace handled the matter and chose not to take it further.’

Victims tell us that how they are treated at the point of disclosing hate crime makes a difference to whether they will disclose again in future

In Wales, the Lived Experience Advocacy Forum (LEAF) is a victims voice panel made up of people with lived experience of experiencing hate crimes and incidences.

In a piece of explorative work with the LEAF group they were able to identify key areas of best practice when handling disclosures and interacting with people experiencing hate:

Empathy – Understanding how you feel Validation – Showing that your feelings count and are important

Being believed – Not doubting what you say is true

Honest – acknowledging there may be difficulties or challenges

Taking a trauma-informed approach to people disclosing hate crime means recognising the profound impact trauma can have on people and seeks to respond in ways that promote healing, safety and empowerment.

Disclosures are received without judgement and with an acknowledgement that whatever the victim is feeling/experiencing is right for them in that moment.

Trauma informed approaches can also be taken organisation wide when considering policy and procedure reviews.

About the Wales Hate Support Centre

The Wales Hate Support Centre, delivered by Victim Support and funded by Welsh Government, is a confidential and independent specialist support service for victims of hate crime and incidences.

The Support Service is non-judgemental and it doesn’t matter if you’ve involved the police or not.

In addition, the service is;

A Third Party Reporting Centre (they can report to the Police on your behalf)

Victim Focused – moving at your pace and speed, and in the direction you want to go

By your side, providing support and reassurance along the way

Able to offer guidance and advice on your rights, in addition to advocating on your behalf to Police, Housing and other agencies

Available to support young people in addition to adults. You can access the service independently if you’re aged 13 or over, or through a parent or carer if you’re younger than that.
