LIGHT PAINTING FOR NIGHT OWLS AND EARLY BIRDS RAGNE KRISTINE SIGMOND

On our workshop with Ragne Kristine Sigmond it is all about light and light painting in particular. We will explore the wonders of light, and furthermore the possibilities light painting technique, combined with long exposure times, and dark surroundings, brings to our images and creative prosess. This workshop will teach you light painting on interior, landscape and with a model. You will, the more you master this technique, experience that your light painting strokes become more and more personal. We will be shooting in the evenings, at night, and in the morning to capture the soft light that comes with the golden hour. We will seek out interesting locations for the students like old greenhouses, churches, boat houses, old forests that have a curtain mythical quality to them and will work as interesting backdrop. Light painting is equal to “slow photography”. A picture takes from 30 seconds to several minutes to make. Because light painting itself adds a lot of mystique and atmosphere to the photography, most often very little has to be added in post production. DATES: TUITION: LOCATION:

UNDER THE SURFACE - A PORTRAIT WORKSHOP JOYCE TENNESON

The Iconic Photographer Joyce Tenneson is returning to Norway to teach an exclusive workshop at SAGA, as well as be one of the main guests at the Nordic Light Events. This is a unique opportunity to experience and work with one of the most influential photographers of our time.

Our workshop will be focused on Tenneson’s portrait work, where participants will learn to approach their subject with the intention of capturing portraits that go beyond the surface. “I want to allow others to reveal and celebrate aspects of themselves that are usually hidden” Tenneson says about her approach to portrait-photography.

Joyce started her carrier with self-portraits, before she ventured into portraits of others and has since been voted one of America’s most interesting portrayers of the human character. We will be working with natural light, both inside SAGA’s studio but also out in nature. Each day will include lectures, image critic, demonstration of the Tenneson approach, and shooting time with models. Joyce will share with the students how she prepares and sets up a shoot, the way she lights it, and the way she works with her subject to get them at ease and relaxed so they will reveal their true inner self. DATE: TUITION: LOCATION:

WARP ICELAND - A CREATIVE EXPLOSION JONATHAN LAURENCE

Multimedia artist and photographer Jonathan Laurence will challenge your perception of landscape photography in our Iceland adventure of 2018. You will learn to develop new ways of seeing, perceiving, and depicting the visual world, not only through your camera lens, but also through the use of post-production treatments and effects. We will visit known landmarks in The Golden Circle area, landmarks that have been photographed countless times before, but instead of capturing the usual photographs, you will be challenged to create your own interpretation of the scenery through the use of creative treatments and presentations. Ex. how will it look if you took 10 identical image of Geysir, but gave each one a different colour treatment, or used a slow video treatment with sound, or created a grid showing different parts of Geysir. It is all about creating visual interesting images. You will be challenged to stretch your talent, and we urge you to be open to trying new things, and see how far you can go. You will create multilayered images, art pieces, and photo series, that represents your artistic vision, but also is a reflection of the surrounding landscape. Our goal is for you to expand your creative muscle and test out new concepts, in addition to capturing Iceland through your camera lens. DATES: TUITION: LOCATION:

Vi vil besøke kjente landemerker i området ‘The Golden Circle’.

WET PLATE COLLODION JILL ENFIELD

This workshop will transport you back to the beginning of photography and teach you to create glass negatives and tintypes using wet plate techniques from the 1860s. Our instructor Jill Enfield, has written two books about the topic and is regarded as one of America’s most experienced and respected alternative process artists.

The collodion process, which is said to have been invented in about 1850, was the first widely used photographic process that produced a negative image on a transparent photographic medium. Other methods of the time, such as the Daguerreotype, produced a one-of-a-kind positive image, which could not be replicated easily. With the collodion process, however, the photographer could make an unlimited number of prints from a single negative.

The workshop will cover the entire process from cutting and preparing glass & aluminum, mixing
and handling chemicals, safety procedures, making portable darkrooms, assessment of exposure time, evaluation of results, and all that goes into mastering the wet plate collodion process.

THE NUDE AS FORM CONNIE IMBODEN

ON LAND AND IN WATER The goal of our workshop with Connie Imboden is to learn to use the camera as a tool to discover new ways of looking at and interpreting the human form. By looking at it as form, we will learn to develop an intuitive visual approach in photographing the body, in order to see it in a new way and be truly original with this most popular subject.

The workshop will consist of lectures, discussions, exercises, assignments, image critic and a lot of shooting time. The first day is spent looking closely at the human body as form. We then go outside and look at the human form in relation to nature. We will spent 2 days shooting at a private pool to practise shooting in, under and above water.

Students will leave this workshop with a new approach in photographing nudes. You will also discovered the magic that can happen when we transform the human form by using reflections, water, mirroring, movement, and light.

PLATINUM PRINTING TILLMAN CRANE

Any photographer, working in any format, film-based or digital, can make platinum prints today. Also known as platinum/palladium or platinotypes, this process dates back to the late 1800’s. The unique look of a platinum print is due to the emulsion being absorbed into the paper, rather than sitting on top and expanded steps between pure black and pure white both contributing to the deeper, richer feeling you experience when looking at these prints.

This workshop will give the beginner platinum printer the knowledge and experience to make platinum prints. The more experienced platinum printer can use this workshop to build on your skill set and help solve problem printing issues. We will work primarily with the NA2 platinum/palladium process, but discuss other platinum processes. With plenty of one– on-one guidance and a focus on making prints, this workshop is guaranteed to build your skills.

Students should bring digital files of images they wish to print. Due to the cost off chemistry, and paper, the platinum printing is considered a highend prosess. The print created is the most durable of all photographic processes.

PORTRAITS AND POST-PRODUCTION WILLIAM ROPP

THE SHADOW SCULPTOR William Ropp is known for his unique style, where his images are so dimensional and expressive that they look like they are sculpted from shadow and light. This is a workshop for photographers whom want to push their portrait skills to a new level, as well as master the post-production part of portrait photography. Participants will learn how to create amazing and different portraits using William’s flashlight technique before we go into intensive photoshop sessions, where you get first hand introduction to Williams special approach. You will gain an insight into his specific approach regarding the portrait; how he treats his models to get them to feel at ease and safe, and how just with a short talk he helps them to open up to the photographer so it is possible to “see the soul mirrored in their eyes”. There will also be a part in the workshop dedicated to his lighting technique, where he will show participants how to sculpt a body or a still life with the beam of a torch lamp. DATES: TUITION: LOCATION:

LOCATIONS OUR HOME IS IN NORWAY AT SAGA - CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY. OUR DESTINATION WORKSHOPS IN 2018 ARE IN ST PETERSBURG (RUSSIA) AND THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (ICELAND)

50

ICELAND Iceland is a country of sharp contrasts. A place where fire and ice co-exist. Where dark winters are offset by the summer’s midnight sun. The country is also known for its great variety in scenery and landscape. Iceland was the last European country to be settled, mostly by Norsemen in the 9th and 10th centuries. They came mainly from Norway and elsewhere in Scandinavia, and from the Norse settlements in the British Isles, from where a Celtic element was also introduced. The language and culture of Iceland were predominantly Scandinavian from the outset, but there are traces of Celtic influence in some of the ancient poetry, in some personal names and in the apperance of present-day Icelanders. Our workshop in Iceland takes place in the Golden Circle, close to the major attractions in South Iceland such as Geysir, Gullfoss and Thingvellir National Park.

51

ST PETERSBURG- RUSSIA St. Petersburg, the North capital of Russia, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, often called “the window to Europe“. The city has its fascinating charm in the unique harmony of the superb European style and Russian historical tradition. We are working with local art historian Tanya Yermolayev who will give us access to historical landmarks and palaces throughout the city. She will also offer the participants a guided tour of The Hermitage, one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, where she worked for several years.
