THE NUDE AS FORM CONNIE IMBODEN

ON LAND AND IN WATER Our vision is so often limited by what we know that we see - what we expect to see - instead of what is actually in front of us. This can be particularly challenging when photographing the nude, a subject dominated by preconceptions. The nude, more than any other subject, is the most popular in the history of art, and possibly the most controversial.

We already have a myriad of preconceptions as to what a nude should look like, what is a beautiful nude, what is appropriate, what is not appropriate, what is tasteless, what is offensive, and so on. All of this contributes to the nude as an incredibly powerful and popular subject, while at the same time an extremely challenging one and difficult to see in an original way.

Through exercises, assignments, and discussions, the goal of this workshop is to learn to use the camera as a tool to discover new ways of looking at and interpreting the human form. By looking at it as form, we will learn to develop an intuitive visual approach in photographing the body in order to see it in a new way and be truly original with this most popular subject. DATES: TUITION: LOCATION:

WET PLATE COLLODION AND ALBUMEN PRINTING JILL ENFIELD

This workshop will transport you back to the beginning of photography and teach you to create glass negatives and tintypes using wet plate techniques from the 1860s. Our instructor Jill Enfield, has written two books about the topic and is regarded as one of America’s most experienced and respected alternative process artists.

The collodion process, which is said to have been invented in about 1850, was the first widely used photographic process that produced a negative image on a transparent photographic medium. Other methods of the time, such as the Daguerreotype, produced a one-of-a-kind positive image, which could not be replicated easily. With the collodion process, however, the photographer could make an unlimited number of prints from a single negative.

The workshop will cover the entire process from cutting and preparing glass & aluminum, mixing and handling chemicals, safety procedures, making portable darkrooms, assessment of exposure time, evaluation of results, and all that goes into mastering wet plate collodion and albumen printing. From the glass negative we will learn to produce a print using the albumen technique, which was the first commercially exploitable method of producing a photographic print on a paper base from a negative.

IMAGINARIUM CLAIRE ROSEN

LEARN THE SECRET OF CONCEPTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY This advanced workshop covers the elements involved in creating conceptual thematic imagery from idea generation through execution. It is ideal for photographers who are comfortable with the technical aspects of their equipment and are looking to create staged narrative images taking their photography to the next level.

Students focus on brainstorming, concept development, and thinking outside the box when approaching visual storytelling. The course walks through step by step how to make your picture concept a reality through mood boards, production sheets, pre-production and scheduling; with lectures on how to source locations, props, and lighting theory; how to cast and work with subjects, as well as problem – solving, communication, and working efficiently on set or on location.

All participants will execute their own concept on the workshop, from idea to finished image. DATE: TUITION: LOCATION:

THE SHADOW SCULPTOR WILLIAM ROPP

PAINTING WITH LIGHT - A PORTRAIT WORKSHOP William Ropp is known for his unique style, where his images are so dimensional and expressive that they look like they are sculpted from shadow and light. When you add in the quality of light in his images, it is easy to understand that his work has grabbed the art-worlds attention. This is a workshop for photographers whom want to push their portrait skills to a new level. Participants will learn how to create amazing and different portraits using William’s flashlight technique and his special approach in Photoshop. You will also gain an insight into his specific approach regarding the portrait; how he treats his models to get them to feel at ease and safe, and how just with a short talk he helps them to open up to the photographer so it is possible to “see the soul mirrored in their eyes”. There will also be a part in the workshop dedicated to his lighting technique, where he will show participants how to sculpt a body or a still life with the beam of a torch lamp. We will arrange for models to be available for the students to photograph. DATES: TUITION: LOCATION:

THE AUTUMN LANDSCAPE EDDIE SOLOWAY

EXPERIENCE AND PHOTOGRAPH NATURE IN NEW AND EXCITING WAYS Our fall workshop with nature photographer Eddie Soloway is designed to push participants from seeing what’s right in front of their eyes, into the world of abstractions, reflections, layers, movement, and then deeper into the realm of concepts and imagination. During the workshop, outdoor experiences in local natural areas take participants through important steps to enriching their photographs of the natural world as they find themselves focused less on objects and things, and more on the magic of moments and the essence of places. This is a workshop suited for all levels. Our goal is to strengthen your skill, and develop your eye so you are able to create stunning images of nature, as you see and experience it. This workshop weaves together eye-opening outdoor experiences, technical lessons, image reviews, and Eddie’s one-on-one meetings with each participant. DATES: TUITION: LOCATION:

October 12 - 16 NOK 7.700,-

LOCATIONS OUR HOME IS IN NORWAY AT SAGA - CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY. OUR DESTINATION WORKSHOPS IN 2017 ARE IN ST PETERSBURG (RUSSIA), MAINE (USA) AND THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (ICELAND)

50

ICELAND Iceland is a country of sharp contrasts. A place where fire and ice co-exist. Where dark winters are offset by the summer’s midnight sun. The country is also known for its great variety in scenery and landscape. Iceland was the last European country to be settled, mostly by Norsemen in the 9th and 10th centuries. They came mainly from Norway and elsewhere in Scandinavia, and from the Norse settlements in the British Isles, from where a Celtic element was also introduced. The language and culture of Iceland were predominantly Scandinavian from the outset, but there are traces of Celtic influence in some of the ancient poetry, in some personal names and in the apperance of present-day Icelanders. Our workshop in Iceland takes place in the Golden Circle, close to the major attractions in South Iceland such as Geysir, Gullfoss and Thingvellir National Park.

51

ST PETERSBURG- RUSSIA St. Petersburg, the North capital of Russia, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, often called “the window to Europe“. The city has its fascinating charm in the unique harmony of the superb European style and Russian historical tradition. We are working with local art historian Tanya Yermolayev who will give us access to historical landmarks and palaces throughout the city. She will also offer the participants a guided tour of The Hermitage, one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, where she worked for several years. PREVIOUS WORKSHOP LOCATIONS: Yelagin Palace
• The Palace of Grand Duke Michail Alexandrovich • Brusnitsin Mansion
• Rasputin’s favorite bathhouse • Stieglitz Museum of Applied Arts
• Academy of Fine Art
