of what happened next – after all, we wouldn’t want to watch a good movie backwards.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to our Autumn news bulletin for the Haileybury Foundation. I trust you will enjoy reading about our latest initiatives and events over the past few months. One of the gifts of a rounded education is the development of life-long intellectual, sporting or cultural pursuits. Among those that I continue to pursue is being a perpetual scholar of history. My most recent read was Jerusalem: The Biography by renowned historian Simon Sebag Montefiore. In consuming 5,000 years of history about arguably the most well-known city on Earth, I regularly reminded myself that you must read history from the perspective of the period, suspending your knowledge

This frame of reference is particularly relevant to Haileybury’s history. It was founded at a time when private schooling in Melbourne was in an explosive ‘start-up’ phase in response to the city’s enormous economic and population growth of prior decades. On 1 January 1892, only weeks before Haileybury opened its doors, the Private Schools Association itself was founded by 12 schools, with only two of them surviving through what became the economic depression of the same decade. If you haven’t heard of Cumloden School, Carlton College or Hawthorn College, it is because they are examples of schools that perished during that time. Haileybury managed to survive, but it could have so easily been different – remember, we must suspend our knowledge of what happened next to truly understand the period. Perhaps even pause for a moment to consider how many past, present and future students would never have had the

gift of a great Haileybury education, were it not for the valiant contributions of so many over the years. The core mission of the Haileybury Foundation is clear, present and simple: by understanding the School’s history, we must strive to secure its future. NEIL SUTCLIFFE CHAIRMAN, HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION

– CHANGING LIVES FOREVER

We have been delighted with the response from Haileybury staff to our Workplace Giving program. All staff members at the School have been invited to contribute to a voluntary program on a monthly basis with all donations directed to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. We are pleased to announce that one student commencing in 2020 will be the recipient of the Haileybury Staff Giving Scholarship. We are extremely thankful to our staff for their generous contributions to this project.

Haileybury Foundation is now providing an opportunity for fellow classmates to leave a lasting legacy via the Class Giving program, which will contribute to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. We encourage our Old Haileyburians to be part of this unique opportunity to provide a life-changing education for a student who would not otherwise be able to attend Haileybury. As an example, class members from the Class of 2007 have already joined together to help fund an annual scholarship for a student attending Haileybury. Representatives of the classes may have the opportunity to interview short-listed

candidates for the scholarship along with Haileybury staff. We look forward to being able to announce further Class Giving Scholarships at the end of 2019.
