2024 Impact Report

From the Chairman

It is with immense pride that I introduce you to our 2024 Impact Report. As in prior years, we publish this report to provide all members of the School’s community — including donors, recipients, Old Haileyburians, Haileybury Society members (being past parents and staff), current parents, staff and students — with an insight into the Foundation’s activities, fundraising and impact over the past year.

If you have ever contemplated what impact your contribution — of time or donations, or both — multiplies into, then read on and discover for yourself. With 2023 being our year of ‘growth and maturity,’ 2024 was a year of outright success, our finest hour (so far), with its broad array of progress, milestones and achievements: record donations, record scholarships and over 400 new donors joining our giving community.

Without a doubt, for myself personally, the ‘finest hour’ of last year’s achievements was our inaugural Thank You event, held in October within the stunning new pavilion at Keysborough, overlooking the pristine Rendall Oval — a fitting venue for our Foundation Scholars to meet and, quite literally, thank their generous donors.

As I mentioned in my speech, for us, as volunteer Board members, this event was our very own ‘pay day.’ We were in the company of such happy, grateful and engaging students, we witnessed the warmth between donor and donee as they met and chatted and we saw, first hand, what our collective years of work had now produced. We look forward to many more Thank You events in the years to come.

Another highlight in 2024 was the ground-breaking Strategic Planning Workshop, held in August. This was the first of its kind, bringing together Haileybury’s executive leadership team, Council members and Foundation Board members to formulate the School’s enduring philanthropic strategy.

On a more sombre note, we observe with sadness the passing of Haileybury Foundation’s ‘Founder,’ Tom Poulton, at the turn of the year. Having dedicated my opening article in last year’s Impact Report to Tom’s incredible contribution, I only encourage you to read the Vale article in this report to be reminded of who we have lost.

There is still so much great work for us all to do. As I noted in the 2022 Impact Report and in subsequent newsletters, the Foundation has its ‘50 and 50 by ‘30’ objectives to reach — that is, by the year 2030, we will be funding (at least) 50 scholarships per year and have (at least) $50 million in combined funds from our investment corpus and bequests. With five years to go, we are approximately two thirds of the way towards our scholarship goal and around two fifths of the way towards our combined funding goal.

Thank you for your support and generosity to date and we look forward to building towards these goals together. Given that every student matters every day, rest assured that every gift matters every year.

From the Vice Principal

As we reflect on the past year, we extend our gratitude to every member of the Haileybury community whose generosity has profoundly impacted our School. Through your unwavering support, the Haileybury Foundation has continued to transform lives and enhance our educational environment.

In 2024, your contributions have enabled 31 students to receive Haileybury Foundation Scholarships, providing them with lifechanging educational opportunities that would have otherwise been out of reach. These scholarships not only open doors to academic excellence but also foster personal growth and future success.

Your donations to the Voluntary Building Fund have facilitated significant enhancements across our campuses. From the development of modern learning spaces to the upgrade of essential infrastructure, these improvements enrich the student experience and ensure that Haileybury remains a leader in education. Our libraries continue to thrive as hubs of knowledge and inspiration, thanks to the

generous support of our donors. These spaces are integral to our students’ learning journeys, offering resources that stimulate curiosity and academic achievement.

The recent Haileybury Foundation Thank You event was a resounding success, celebrating the generosity of donors and the transformative impact their support has on the lives of our 31 Haileybury Foundation Scholarship students. Held in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the event brought together a gathering of donors, current and former beneficiaries of Haileybury Foundation scholarships, their families and senior Haileybury staff. We look forward to hosting this event once again, later in the year. We hope you might attend so that we can thank you personally for your generosity.

We are immensely proud of what we have achieved together and look forward to building upon this foundation of generosity and excellence. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey.

Vice Principal Community Engagement & Advancement

From the Director of Development and Alumni Relations

It is with gratitude that I present this Impact Report, outlining the impactful and generous contributions made by our wonderful community in 2024. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in enriching the lives of our students.

Haileybury Foundation experienced a stunning year in 2024. Without a doubt this was our best year since the inception of the Foundation with more community members engaged than ever before and an amazing set of results that seek to benefit our aspirational students.

Highlights of the 2024 year include:

> Total donations for all three funds exceeded $960,000

> 423 new donors contributed to the Foundation

> 369 new families contributed to the Voluntary Building Fund

> Over 150 attendees attended the inaugural ‘Thank you’ event

> All Haileybury Foundation Scholarship students contributed messages of thanks and reports to their benefactors.

In 2025, we welcome four new students to Haileybury as beneficiaries of Haileybury Foundation scholarships. Three of these scholarships are from groups of donors who have previously supported students at our School. We thank the Class of 1984, Haileybury Parents and Friends of Keysborough (HPFK) and the Haileybury staff through the workplace-giving program for their generous support.

At the heart of Haileybury Foundation is a simple yet powerful belief: that talent and potential should never be limited by financial circumstance. Thanks to the

generosity of our donors, students from a wide range of backgrounds are now thriving at Haileybury—all of whom would never have had the opportunity to attend without scholarship support.

Each scholarship funded through the Foundation opens a door. For students, it means access to an exceptional education, a supportive and inspiring environment, and life-changing opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. For families, it provides hope and relief, knowing their child is being given every chance to succeed.

Supporters of Haileybury’s Voluntary Building Fund are playing a vital role in shaping the learning environment across all four of our Melbourne-based campuses— Brighton, Berwick, City and Keysborough. Their contributions are helping to deliver modern, purposebuilt facilities that reflect the needs of today’s learners and prepare them for tomorrow’s opportunities. From upgraded playgrounds and innovative learning hubs to improved sporting and performing arts spaces, these projects are creating dynamic and inspiring places for students to thrive. The generosity of our community ensures that every Haileybury student—regardless of campus—benefits from state-of-the-art infrastructure that supports academic excellence, creativity, wellbeing and connection.

Thank you to our wonderful community. Your support ensures that Haileybury continues to be a place of great diversity where students can thrive in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Thank you.

Ryan Zhang's journey to overseas study

1. Do you recall how you felt way back in 2018 when you were told that you were successful in gaining a Haileybury Foundation scholarship?

At the time, I certainly wasn’t very aware of the difference between a school like Haileybury compared to even other private schools and my feelings towards my Foundation scholarship were definitely shaped as I became older and more importantly, became more mature. But even then, I remembered feeling very relieved. My parents were not in a position where they could afford a school like Haileybury so I remember an almost overwhelming sense of relief that they wouldn’t need to worry about the financial implications of my education.

2. What were your initial thoughts of your new school, which I assume was very different from what you had experienced in the past?

I think the differences were definitely amplified due to the fact that I attended the City campus. It is, as far as I know, unlike any other school. I’d come from a junior school which was incredibly spacious and so my initial thoughts centred around going to school in a single ten-storey building. Other than that, I recall being very surprised at how many things were offered at the School in terms of academic enrichment and co-curricular activities. Despite being a very new and developing campus, there was no shortage of activities offered at City, which was a good surprise as a new student.

3. What are some of your fondest memories of Haileybury?

My first moment is finding out I was elected vice-swimming captain in Year 12. I’ve also said this many a time, but I was no one close to the strongest swimmer in our squad. And yet, I was elected to the leadership team for that year. It was a particularly fond moment because 1) I never really expected it and 2) I knew that I certainly had not been awarded the position due to my swimming prowess. So, it meant a lot to know that the other swimmers and the coaches thought I was a good enough leader to lead the squad despite not being one of the top swimmers.

The second moment was during final exam preparations where I got to work pretty much everyday with my English teacher and we not only worked through the English content, but we also examined the mindset that I, specifically, should have going into the exam, which I think is something that isn’t done enough. These were small, simple moments, but moments that nevertheless demonstrated the dedication of my teachers and it’s something I look back on with tremendous fondness.

4. Following your final examinations in 2024, what were your hopes and dreams as you entered a new world devoid of school bells?

I suppose it’s difficult to escape the notion of going overseas for university in this question. It was, undoubtedly, my primary goal and hope throughout the past 18 months. I still don’t think I’ve been able to sleep properly due to the excitement I feel. Moreover, I believe we are somewhat

sheltered at a place like Haileybury—we are mostly surrounded by high-quality people, facilities and ideas. However, in terms of my hopes and dreams that don’t involve university, I am looking forward to the idea of ‘exploring the real world’.

5. What is it about Haileybury that enables the best to be brought out of you and so many other students?

It’s the opportunities we’re given. Not many places in the country can boast about the number of activities/ideas that the school will allow and help you to explore so I think that by simply offering the opportunities that Haileybury provides, this promotes a student to do their best.

6. What are your plans now for the next 3 to 5 years as you embark on your overseas study journey?

For most of that time, I’ll be in America so my plans predominantly involve meeting new people and enjoying/discovering a new way of life. America is very different from Australia and the university system is remarkably different as well so I hope I can use my time to learn beyond the classroom in a way that’ll prepare me best for my future, professionally and personally.

7. How has Haileybury set you up for the future?

I think the School has developed a very good sense of self within me. I know what my goals are, and my academics have helped me discover how I function best. My co-curricular activities that I participated in at Haileybury have helped me discover the things I love so I think the School has really set me up on all fronts of life.

8. Do you have any words of advice for future Haileybury Foundation scholarship students?

My advice is very simple and cliched, but nevertheless true: take every opportunity you can and have a goal in mind beyond just your ATAR. This has been said to death and it’s not a new notion in any way, but the ATAR is just a number. For maybe ten days after you find out your study scores/ATAR, people talk about it. The goal does not need to involve going overseas or choosing a particular university you want to get into; your goal can be anything in any field as long as it can last beyond your time in high school.

9. What message would you provide to members of the Haileybury community who support Haileybury Foundation?

Your gifts can manifest themselves in unimaginable ways. I received my scholarship in 2018. At that time, as a 12 year old, no one—not even my parents— would have predicted that I would study overseas. I say that, not to boast, but to emphasise the fact that your gifts can lead to something far greater than just a student who gets a good ATAR.

To give a student the opportunity to go to Haileybury is to give them the opportunity to grow up, both figuratively and literally, in an environment which

will not limit their belief in themselves or what they’re capable of. The thoughts and ideas that I discovered and moulded throughout my time at Haileybury were far greater assets in my admission than any grades could’ve ever been. That is the true power of the Haileybury Foundation. That is the true power of your gift. Thank you.

TOM POULTON (OH 1966)

Honouring Tom Poulton

A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE

The Haileybury community mourns the passing of Tom Poulton, esteemed alumnus, former Chairman of Haileybury Council, and the inaugural Chairman of the Haileybury Foundation. Haileybury marked a formal celebration of Tom's life at an event in April 2025.

Tom’s Haileybury journey began as a student from 1961 to 1966, where he excelled in Literature and History, earned First Class Honours and became a respected student leader. He went on to graduate with an LL B (Hons) from the University of Melbourne and built an illustrious legal career, including more than a decade as Managing Partner of Allens, one of Australia’s leading law firms. Throughout his career, he mentored generations of young lawyers, advocated for workplace equality and promoted excellence with integrity.

Tom returned to Haileybury in 2008 as a Council member and served as Chairman from 2009 to 2023. His 15-year tenure was defined by vision, wisdom and tireless dedication. Under his stewardship, Haileybury expanded to become Australia’s largest independent school, launched the country’s first online independent school (Haileybury Pangea) and extended its footprint internationally to China and across the Asia–Pacific.

Perhaps Tom’s most profound impact was as the Founding Chairman of the Haileybury Foundation. He understood the transformative power of education and was instrumental in creating pathways for students from disadvantaged backgrounds—including Indigenous students at Haileybury Rendall School—to access life-changing opportunities. His strategic oversight enabled the Foundation to thrive,

inspiring a culture of philanthropy that will benefit generations to come.

Tom’s presence at School events, his unwavering support of student endeavours in the arts and beyond, and his belief that ‘every student matters every day’ reflected the values he lived by. His partnership with CEO|Principal Derek Scott was pivotal to Haileybury’s recognition as a ‘Great World School’.

Tom Poulton’s legacy is profound. As a leader, mentor, visionary and generous spirit, he helped shape a modern Haileybury grounded in tradition but driven by innovation and inclusivity. The School and the Haileybury Foundation are forever indebted to his extraordinary service.

Vivat Haileyburia.

GRAHAM S. DICKINSON (OH 1962)

Graham was a dedicated member of the Haileybury community. He was a student from 1956 to 1960, prior to his family moving to Sydney where he completed his senior years of schooling. Following his school days, he forged a successful career internationally in the areas of Chemistry and Technology. He spent years based in Singapore. In later years he returned to Melbourne where he became an enthusiastic and valued contributor to the Old Haileyburians Association.

Graham was the youngest in a family lineage which provided great service to the School. His grandfather, Sydney Rushbrook Dickinson, was Haileybury’s third Principal (Head).

Graham’s father was Sir Ben Dickinson OH 1930. He was School Captain in 1930, and Captain of both Cricket and Tennis. A geologist who gained 1st Class Honours at the University of Melbourne. Sir Ben led the search for mineral resources in South Australia and was integral to early exploration for uranium, iron ore, bauxite and coal. He was knighted in 1980 for his services to the mining industry.

Graham treasured his Haileybury origins, and his generosity and support for his peers and the School generally were of the highest order.

A

celebration of impact

One of the year’s most memorable moments was the Haileybury Foundation Thank You event, which brought together the people at the heart of our mission—our generous donors, inspiring scholarship recipients (both past and present) and dedicated staff. This special evening served as a powerful reminder of how philanthropic support is transforming lives across the Haileybury community.

HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION

THANK YOU EVENT

Held in a warm and welcoming setting, the event gathered current and former recipients of Haileybury Foundation scholarships, their families, senior staff and Foundation supporters. Guests enjoyed canapés and refreshments while forging new connections and celebrating shared values.

The highlight of the evening was a series of heartfelt speeches from scholarship students past and present, including Haftu Strintzos (OH 2018), Britastina Heiskari (OH 2024—HPFK Scholarship) and Ryan Zhang (OH 2024—Gary Bailey Memorial Scholarship). Their stories spoke volumes about the life changing impact of a Haileybury education made possible through the generosity of donors. Each speaker offered a deeply personal reflection on how their scholarship opened doors to academic achievement, co-curricular enrichment and new futures.

Senior Haileybury leaders also expressed gratitude to our donors, noting how their continued support enables the School to remain accessible to exceptional students, regardless of their financial background.

More than just an event, the evening was a celebration of community, potential and lasting change. It reaffirmed the vital role that philanthropy plays in shaping lives and building a stronger, more inclusive Haileybury. We look forward to the 2025 event to be held on Thursday, 21 August.

CONNECTING DONORS AND SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS

Benefactor morning teas

The Haileybury Foundation’s Benefactor morning tea events have become a cherished tradition, offering donors a meaningful opportunity to see firsthand the impact of their generosity. Hosted throughout the year across each Haileybury campus, these intimate gatherings bring together Foundation supporters and the scholarship students they help to educate.

Over morning tea, donors hear directly from students whose lives have been transformed by access to a Haileybury education. These conversations offer genuine insight into the academic journeys, aspirations and personal growth of our scholarship recipients—stories that consistently highlight the power of philanthropy to change lives. Donors are often also treated to a tour of the School by the students.

For students, the chance to thank their benefactors in person adds a deeply personal layer to their scholarship experience. For donors, the events provide a heartwarming and tangible connection to the individuals behind their support.

Each morning tea fosters a spirit of community and shared purpose, reinforcing the enduring impact of the Haileybury Foundation’s mission: to provide life-changing educational opportunities to talented students, regardless of their financial background.

As these events continue to grow, they serve as a powerful reminder that behind every scholarship is a story—and behind every story, a generous individual or community group helping to shape the future.

Building Fund

Gifts to the Haileybury Foundation

Building Fund are making a difference to the lives of our students and staff. We thank our donors who contribute regularly to the Building Fund and in particular our parents who donate to the Voluntary Building Fund. A summary of some of the projects that have been funded through these gifts appears below.

Berwick campus

Installation of a new playground/obstacle course in the junior school.

Brighton campus

New driveway fence

As the main driveway at Brighton is surrounded by ovals either side of the roadway, there has been a risk identified with students’ activities during peak times. To alleviate this risk, a new heavy duty commercial flat-top fence was installed on both sides of the main driveway. This will ensure that activities on these ovals are contained away from general traffic.

City Pangea staff spaces

With the continued growth of Pangea, further dedicated teaching spaces were required. Four high-quality, acoustically sound spaces were constructed to meet this growing need. These spaces provide world-class spaces for our teaching staff.

Keysborough

ELC: LED carpark lighting

With the hours worked by our ELC staff, they often leave site during dark periods. We identified that the poorly lit carpark was an issue in winter months. Three LED carpark lighting poles were installed across the carpark to ensure safety during darker periods of the year. The light fittings are operated via individual solar panels rather than a direct electrical source. This project showcases the fact we are always considering sustainable practices as an integral part of building works at Haileybury.

Boys Middle School Art Room

The original focus of the Art facility at Newlands was to appear as a venue with minimalistic features. The architects designed the space to appear as a shed. To modernise this space to function as a state-of-the-art facility, while keeping to our nominated budget allowance, a new vinyl floor was installed over the existing concrete surface and a suspended ceiling installed with superior bright LED fittings. The space now looks more like a top-class modern Art facility.
