FOUNDATION FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the Summer 2018/19 edition of Foundation News, the quarterly bulletin to help telegraph our stories and achievements to the growing Haileybury community. As the calendar year, once again, draws to a close, it is an ideal time to reflect on the purpose of philanthropy and the enormous difference it makes to those it provides for. Whilst all foundations such as ours are registered charities for deductible gifts, for the purposes of this article, I make a distinction between ‘charity’ and ‘philanthropy’. In this sense, ‘charity’ would be more clearly defined as ‘giving for people’s immediate needs’ – such as food, water and health – whilst ‘philanthropy’ would be more distinctive for its focus ‘giving for long term betterment’. In fact, the literal meaning of philanthropy – ‘the love of mankind’ – provides us with a valuable clue, in this regard. Members of the Haileybury community could perhaps relate to this from a different angle:
THE GIFT OF TIME
SUMMER 2018/19
NEWS
we would justifiably feel we have already ‘given’ towards the immediate needs of the School – whether as a student, a staff member or a parent – and might have yet to understand or consider the purpose and need to ‘give for its long term betterment’, especially when it is living through such a period of success and strength. Yet, the most eminent educational institutions around the world, irrespective of whether they were founded with an endowment or not, only remain so because they have built up almost impregnable Foundations through the philanthropy of their communities. With such internal financial strength to draw from, each generation of leaders is thus able to cope with all manner of economic and government cycles and award scholarships in perpetuity to talented students who would not have otherwise been able to attend. Haileybury did not have the luxury of a founding endowment, nor did it have a Foundation for its first 118 years. It has thus had to ride through some very challenging economic and government cycles through good management, whilst relying on the ‘kindness of strangers’ for the vast majority of its growth and progress, with only occasional support from friends.
As the 2018 Australian School of the Year, with over 5000 students across multiple campuses, it is time Haileybury had the Foundation it deserves – its current strength merely proves it is worth preserving – and we all know that economic and government cycles are omnipresent. Whether your preference is to assist students who would otherwise not be able to attend Haileybury (the Scholarship Fund) or help secure the buildings and facilities it needs to provide such an education (the Building Fund), any such tax deductible donation would help secure Haileybury’s future. NEIL SUTCLIFFE CHAIRMAN, HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION
The Haileybury Foundation is succeeding through the generosity of many. That generosity comes through gifts of time, resources, money and bequests. The Foundation would like to thank the many volunteers who do so much across diverse areas of the School including:
Helping maintain past student’s relationships with the School through the Old Haileyburians Association
Helping students with their reading through the Junior School Reading program
Serving on the College Council or Foundation Board and their various subcommittees.
Assisting with the upkeep of the Heritage and Archives office Helping to preserve the history of the School Meticulously covering books in the School’s Libraries Helping to cater for hungry students at sporting events and assisting with scoring and umpiring Bringing lovers of music and drama together at concerts and performances Fundraising for causes both inside and outside our School gates Holding friend-raising events that bring together the parents of our students and incorporate them into the life of the School Managing the Second Hand Uniform Shops
At least 350 members of our Haileybury community choose to give by regularly volunteering across many areas of the School. Every year Haileybury volunteers contribute in excess of 10,000 hours. Haileybury could not achieve all that it does – for its students, families, and the wider community without volunteer support. Thank you. SCOTT DORAN VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT
