Mamma Mia!
Welcome to Mamma Mia! — a story that is as vibrant and joyful as the island where it is set.
At its heart, this show is about love, identity, friendship and the beautiful messiness of family. But what lifts this musical into something magical is the iconic music of ABBA. These songs have a rare impact on the listener — they stir up joy, longing, laughter and nostalgia, often all at once. Whether you are hearing them for the hundredth time or the very first, they have a way of taking root in your heart. These songs remind us of where we have been, and sometimes, even who we are.
It has been an incredible gift to work with this talented and dedicated cast and crew. Their energy, passion and spirit of collaboration have brought this story to life in the most joyful and genuine way. This is not just another jukebox musical.
At its core, Mamma Mia! is about discovering or returning to who you are. It is an intense emotional journey and our cast embraced the acting challenge of playing characters who grapple with loss, regret and love in its many forms. Yet the true power of this show is its celebration of community and the wider family we cultivate, the people who challenge us, but most importantly, lift us up.
This message was our lived experience. With a cast and crew comprising 90 students across four campuses and four year levels, our interpretation of Mamma Mia! epitomises community. Every rehearsal has been filled with laughter, teamwork and the kind of creative synergy that reminds us why we tell stories on stage.
We hope this performance brings a smile to your face, rhythm to your feet, and maybe even a tear to your eye. So, sit back, enjoy the sun-soaked adventure and let the disco vibes of ABBA take you away.

On a small Greek island, Sophie mails invitations to Sam, Bill and Harry — three men who might be her father, according to her mother, Donna’s old diary (‘Overture/ Prologue,’ ‘Honey, Honey’). Her friends, Lisa and Ali, arrive and learn Sophie’s wedding is the next day.
Donna reunites with her old bandmates and best friends, Tanya and Rosie, as she stresses over running the Taverna (‘Money, Money, Money’). The three men arrive, and Sophie is surprised they all came. She reveals she invited them, not her mother. When Donna sees them — especially Sam — she is shaken by past heartbreak (‘Mamma Mia’).
Tanya and Rosie try to cheer Donna up, reminding her of who she used to be (‘Chiquitita,’ ‘Dancing Queen’). Meanwhile, Sophie asks her fiancé, Sky to always be there for her (‘Lay All Your Love On Me’).
At her bachelorette party, Donna and The Dynamos perform (‘Super Trouper’). Sam, Bill, Harry and the whole island join in (‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’). Sophie shares moments with each man, starting to suspect they might be her father. She asks Bill to give her away as a surprise for Donna (‘The Name of the Game’), and he agrees.
As the party continues (‘Voulez Vous’), both Sam and Harry also offer to walk her down the aisle, leaving Sophie overwhelmed and confused…
Sophie wakes from a nightmare about her three possible dads (‘Under Attack’). Donna thinks Sophie wants to call off the wedding, but Sophie insists she just wants a father in her life and storms off. Donna reflects on her regrets (‘One of Us’). Sam tries to reconnect with Donna, reminiscing about their past (‘SOS’).
Meanwhile, Pepper flirts with Tanya on the beach, but she shuts him down in style (‘Does Your Mother Know?’). Sophie tells Sky about inviting the three men and he storms off, hurt. Sam comforts Sophie and shares his own regrets (‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’).
Harry offers to help pay for the wedding and shares memories with Donna (‘Our Last Summer’). Sophie, now in her wedding dress, asks Donna to walk her down the aisle (‘Slipping Through My Fingers’). Afterwards, Sam offers to give Sophie away, but Donna refuses (‘The Winner Takes It All’).
Bill confesses his fear of settling down, but Rosie charms him into reconsidering (‘Take A Chance On Me’). Guests arrive as the ceremony begins.
At the altar, Donna reveals that Sophie’s father is present — she just doesn’t know which man. Harry happily accepts being one of Sophie’s ‘three dads’ and shares that he is in a relationship with a man. Sophie and Sky decide to postpone the wedding and travel the world instead. Sam seizes the moment and proposes to Donna — she says yes (‘I Do, I Do, I Do’).
Sophie and Sky sail off on their adventure (‘I Have A Dream’).
Encore (‘Mamma Mia,’ ‘Dancing Queen,’ ‘Waterloo’)
I am delighted to present Mamma Mia! to you today. Our cast has worked tirelessly across the rehearsal period, gathering on their weekends to build professional musical connections, whilst forming strong friendships.
As Musical Director, I continue to be humbled, year after year, by our Haileybury students’ ability to learn such complex singing, acting and dancing. Our hired music books have the exact same level of difficulty and complexity as the professional shows you see in town. And our students sing every note of it.
Think of the classic ABBA music video formula: Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid gathered around a piano, performing to camera with sheer joy. Through this lens, we observe all four band members singing in harmony — all the time. Mamma Mia! has constant fourpart harmony, in every song, plus what are known as sub-groups, which are additional countermelodies layered on top. At times, you may hear up to ten different vocal parts sung at once.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the talented musicians who make up our live band. We are playing, live, from the
orchestra pit under the stage. Audiences are often surprised that what they hear is not simply a backing track, but in fact a group of live musicians, piecing this show together, instrument by instrument.
Keep an ear to the ground towards the end of ‘Take a Chance on Me’ for a special surprise from our band and cast. Aikman Hall has a unique feature that will be incorporated live, which may be a world first for Mamma Mia!
I strongly encourage you to proudly sing along to every song in this show. We know that this music has stood the test of time and is a dancefloor filler for young and old, and all in between. Enjoy the show.
