2023 GVR Voter Information Pamphlet

2023 VOTER INFORMATION PAMPHLET

Each year, member households in good standing elect four of their peers to sit on the Board of Directors for a 3-year term.

A member household in good standing is one whose membership account is up to date by the “record date” set as January 30, this year. The exceptions to this rule are:

• households which have finalized arrangements for a monthly dues payment plan

• households that have applied for 2023 dues relief through the Member Assistance Program (MAP)

In late February, members will receive voter codes via traditional and electronic mail. Each eligible household may submit ONE vote. A member who owns more than one home will receive a single voter code unless they request a separate code for each property they own. Using a single voter code, their vote will be counted for each home they own. To request separate voter codes, email NanciM@gvrec.org.

GVR’s elections are managed by a professional third party. Vote-Now.com manages elections for community associations in fifteen states. They offer GVR members two ways to vote: online and via requested paper ballot. This year, members who prefer to vote using a paper ballot will be able to request that ballot earlier so mailing delays will be less of a concern. Find details on the election information notice arriving in your mailboxes at the end of February.

I have actively participated in the governing activities of GVR. Last year I ran for the GVR Board.

Describe your use of GVR facilities and participation in GVR activities in the past two years and how your GVR involvement has prepared you to serve on the Board of Directors.

Bachelor: I currently use the fitness center and am a member of the Forum and Computer Clubs. I have taken many GVR classes in the almost eight years I’ve lived here. I have normally attended the Board Affairs, Fiscal Affairs and Planning and Evaluation Committees since I moved here. Since I have served on the Board for the, extremely busy, last two years I feel completely prepared to serve on the Board of Directors.

Blake: I have attended meetings, visited facilities, served as Board of Director for the past year. Serve on the Nominations & Elections Committee, meet with CEO Scott Somers once a month. Worked to learn how GVR operates both to serve its members and finances.

Charette: Attendance at social events, including arts, movies, dance. Attended Fiscal Affairs Committee meetings and Board meetings in 2022. At November 2022 Board meeting was interviewed by Board/Nomination members.

2023 GVR ELECTIONS

Magliola: What I see day-to-day is how important it is to maintain GVR facilities in top shape and keep them easy for members to use and enjoy. GVR members don’t need a lot of hand-holding or staff-heavy services. The members easily figure things out with a minimum amount of fuss or bother.

Sullwold: Pools, workout gyms, woodshop

Sutherland: I am a tennis player and use the fitness facilities on a regular basis. I am a GVR Woodshop member and frequently use those excellent facilities. I use the pools in the summer. With my service on the Fiscal Affairs Committee, I have become very familiar with the workings of the organization. I thoroughly enjoy what GVR has to offer.

What changes would you like to see made within GVR over the next 5 years?

Bachelor: Since the hiring of the new CEO, that I have worked closely with this past year, I feel he has made effective changes these past two years and will continue to do so. He and the Board members have the Corporation headed in the right direction. I would like to see the momentum continuing in the following years and completing the projects we have been working on.

Blake: We need to be concerned about safety at all our facilities, perhaps spending more money to provide safety. Listen to membership needs and concerns, look for new opportunities to serve our members.

Charette: GVR needs to be even more focused on where/what brick and mortar facilities. Also pay attention at the age of our current facilities – repair costs vs. total replacements. GVR should explore owning its own water source – water rights?

Dixon: I would like to see GVR recognized nationally as the most efficiently run organization of its kind.

Garneau: I have no interest in changing GVR. It is great the way it is. As a board member I would listen to the CEO and hopefully have open discussions with the board about his recommendations.

Lawless: I don’t have any specific plans for change. I would like to make sure all our dedicated space clubs have adequate space & that all of our fitness centers have up-to-date equipment.

Magliola: I’d be one vote out of 12, so I couldn’t make changes alone. I would work with my fellow board members to keep costs low, especially in the area of payroll, and still deliver top-notch services to GVR members. Many GVR members have noticed that encouraging and increasing volunteerism in GVR would be an important part of making that happen. I understand that volunteers used to do a lot for GVR. Not sure what happened, but I believe we need to work on reviving it.

Sullwold: I would work as a steward of GVR so as to provide for the betterment of clubs, members and Board

functioning. Work carefully to bring about a consensus on what GVR can work towards in the future.

Sutherland: I can’t see any major changes on the near horizon. I think it is necessary to stay aware of coming trends in recreation and member needs. GVR is addressing the various clubs need for more space and appears to be adequately accommodating that. A new large housing development at the Southern end of Camino del Sol will require additional facilities and increased use of current ones.

How would you prioritize and finance the proposed projects being discussed by Planning & Evaluation Committee (P&E) and the Board of Directors?

Bachelor: These projects already are in process and in priority for the next few years. The funding for the current projects are already fiscally planned and budgeted for in the appropriate Reserves. There is no reason to believe the projected projects will not be funded over the next few years. Prioritizing should be based on immediate need and I know some of them have been waiting for a long time. The Casa Paloma 1 pool is funded though the MRR Pool & Spa Reserve and is budgeted.

Blake: Complete and open Del Sol, finish Desert Hills Fitness Center, Complete Santa Rita Springs Glass Art Space, Expand the Wood Shop, plan for pool replacement at Casa Paloma. Plan for expansion of Canoa as new homes being added and will be GVR deeded.

Charette: 1) Del Sol Clubhouse – I approve current finance/ proposed renovation. 2) Review Club requests for funding – approve set limits. 3) Abrego South Field House – would give more priority.

Dixon: The projects would be financed by current income sources. The projects would be prioritized by member input as well as: feasibility, funding availability, need and scheduling practicalities.

Garneau: I think club requests need to be carefully considered and funded when possible. Del Sol Clubhouse needs to be made useable for our members. Glass Arts space should be finished now that it's started. Desert Hills fitness center seems a little over board in design but it is needed. Ceramics already has its extra room, not sure if there is more to the plans. West Center Arts Complex if it opens space in other centers for use and is not too expensive.

Lawless: I would put a nearly equal priority on all currently planned projects for 22-23. I am not familiar with how great the need is for another tennis court at Las Campanas or how quickly the pool at Casa Paloma needs to be replaced. I believe a woodshop expansion may create the need for more monitors which are sometimes difficult to get. I believe Abrego South Field House would be a good idea. I am not opposed to borrowing some of the funds necessary if a good interest rate can be obtained.

2023 GVR ELECTIONS

Magliola: GVR has a big administrative staff that plans and assesses each proposed project. I’ll evaluate that information, and what my fellow board members have to say. Most importantly though, I would like the input of the GVR members in order to make an informed decision before I vote.

Sullwold: The current projects are already in the pipeline. As Director I would want to make sure these projects were finished on time and budget. Future projects fall under two (2) categories. One is expansion in which the Board must determine the cost and benefit of the project and will the funds be available. The second are those projects which are repair and/or replacement which involves different funds and planning. These second group of projects are managed by the GVR Staff. The Board’s responsibility is to be sure the MR&R Reserve Fund is solvent. The Annual Club requests come through by the way of the FAC and that committee will provide their guidance on the distribution of those request.

Sutherland: The Del Sol Clubhouse needs to be completed ASAP. The other club expansions and relocations appear to be on tract. GVR is adequately funded with internal resources to accomplish these projects.

What other projects would you propose and how would you prioritize them?

Bachelor: I have no proposals for priority. We have so much movement and domino effects going on, with many

projects already in line, I’m going to wait to complete these projects before moving on.

Blake: I would encourage members to come to the Board meetings and contribute their ideas and offer to serve on committees.

Charette: Consider partnering up with La Posada and other similar neighbors to implement programs. GVR fees could be considered by individual benefits/needs.

Dixon: Project proposals should come from GVR members and GVR management. They would be prioritized as stated above.

Garneau: I have no other projects to propose. I think we need to look at the clubs and the members to see what they want here and if it fits with GVR.

Lawless: I have no other proposals at this time.

Magliola: GVR member surveys have shown that an indoor walking track would be a welcome addition to GVR’s facilities. I hope and expect that we’ll take a closer look at that possibility in the near future.

Sullwold: I see that it is Staff’s responsibility to bring to the attention of the P&E Committee those requests for remodel and new buildings. As a Director it is my responsibility to carefully weigh all factors regarding the proposals and the impact on current operations and funding.

Sutherland: Projects that benefit the most members should receive priority. Projects that enhance member’s activities and experiences should be considered on a cost/benefit basis and the number of members potentially participating.
