Solitair, MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA

Client: Crocker Partners

Size: 70,386 GSM

Services: Planning, Architecture, Interior Design

Solitair distinguishes itself amongst the Miami towers with a its striking façade—a unique angular, towering basketweave design inspired by the majestic Medjool date palm tree, popular in South Florida’s tropical landscape. The zigzag, serrated balconies seen on the façade represent flight, movement, lightness and two-dimensional shifting planes emulating the palm tree’s texture and making them the most prominent feature of the building. Alternating balcony guardrail treatments create a simple and elegant statement, and glazed segments face northeast to guide views towards Biscayne Bay, while solid rails face northwest.

The overall vision for the interior design was to seamlessly draw from the building’s architectural concept. Designed with urban, cool neutral materials, the interiors serve as a gallery and backdrop for bold, artistic elements, and reflect the sophisticated, modern living that the building provides.

Environmental concerns were paramount in the design process. The building was designed to minimize the effects of direct sunlight and solar radiation, and wells were added to capture storm water. Interior materials, such as paint, carpets, adhesives and sealants will be low VOC emitting to maintain optimum indoor air. Solitair will receive Silver certification by the National Green Building Standard.

Urban Design & Master Planning

From urban to suburban, we lay the foundation for the creation of the communities of today and of the future.

Our communities—urban, suburban or rural—are given structure and meaning through embedded patterns. These patterns are defined by geographic characteristics and man-made interventions; roadways, pathways, buildings and the open space between. These patterns are the DNA of our communities and the elements that create our sense of place and orientation. An intimate understanding of this DNA is the foundation of our approach to design.

With the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the KLCC is an instantly recognizable landmark and an important national symbol. Following completion of the original master plan in the mid1990’s, RNL were commissioned in 2010 to provide guidance on enhancing the development potential of the remaining undeveloped parcels on the site. The aim of the master plan revision was to help redistribute the approved development density into the remaining site areas in order to leverage the value of the significant development investment on the site to date. In addition, sustainability was elevated to a higher level within the master plan, with standards created for building performance. Departures from the initial master plan included the development of a convention center at the perimeter of the site, which created a barrier to connectivity to the city. Site access improvements were created through enhanced site gateways, internal access and circulation, and improvements to the quality of the pedestrian experience within the public realm.

Qasr Al Jurf, ABU DHABI

Client: IMKAN

Size: 3,800,000 SM (380 Ha)

Services: Concept Master Plan to Detailed Master Plan

Qasr al Jurf is a low-density mixed-use coastal community, a unique destination within the region that will act as a catalyst to further coastal development to create the long-term vision of the Riviera of the Emirates – Sahel Al Emarat. The master plan aims to integrate unique experiences, elevating the importance of land and water. The land is provided through large private residential plots, and networks of programmed and natural open spaces. The water is accessible via public and private beaches along the coastal frontage, and extended into the site with the proposal of a tidal canal that meanders along a length of 4km from the Jiwa Al Qasr to the Harbour District. There are 4 Core Characteristics of the Site: 1/Land: Mature landscape consisting of 1,000s of date palms, mango trees and citrus groves, as well as deer and gazelle roaming the site. 2/ Heritage: The landscape surrounds the site of The Palace, creating a truly unique heritage and connection with the Nation. 3/ Marine: The site is located on one of the most beautiful coastal sites in the region and boasts almost 2km of beach frontage along with a 1.6km breakwater reaching out into the aqua marine waters of the Arabian Gulf. 4/ Beach: An undeveloped coastline that historically has not been publicly accessible, a natural promenade that does not exist in the region: The Riviera of the Emirates - Sahel Al Emarat.

Beyond the opportunity for Nationals to build or buy their own retreat, Qasr al Jurf is a regional or international destination for those seeking to have a retreat, with a unique location supported by precedented access to transport infrastructure (air, road and sea), leisure, recreational and retail facilities, all within one-hour drive of two modern metropolises. The expansion of coastal communities along this coastline would stimulate eco-tourism activities and employment opportunities, thus strengthening and diversifying the UAE and Abu Dhabi economy from its current reliance on oil and gas revenue. A number of piazzas are proposed throughout the development, including the Jiwar Al Qasr where exhibitions, cultural programs and community events can be hosted. Qasr al Jurf’s design intent is to create soulful places that enrich lives. Every element of the development has been conceived, nurtured and realised in terms of its contribution to the soul of Qasr Al Jurf. The former palace (Qasr) is the heart of the development, however, the soul of the development will permeate through the development in every little detail, from the falaj’s, to the heritage trail, meticulously designed public realm and open spaces, to the retention of the extensive and mature trees and the wildlife that inhabit the property.

Client: Dubai Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA)

DUBAI, UAE

Services: Coordination & Stakeholder Management Plan, Participants & Sponsorship Target Setup, Testing Location Identification & Selection, Communication & Outreach, Participant Assessment & Selection, Panelists Identification & Selection, Finalist Announcement & Coordination

Dubai aims to create a platform to encourage innovation in driving automation technology among industry, government and end users through a mixture of collaboration and experimentation. This platform, called the Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport (the Challenge), will accelerate the adoption of smart mobility solutions in Dubai – and address some of the most pressing problems related to driving automation – by building a network of partners. Moreover, the economic, technological and regulatory solutions identified through this Challenge will be implemented in Dubai, making it a model for the rest of the region and the world.

First/last mile connection will be the focus of the Challenge in 2019. In parallel with the Challenge, RTA will host a conference in October 2019 where international experts, entrepreneurs, mobility leaders and innovators in driving automation technology will come together to recognize the Challenge finalists, highlight and showcase the outcomes and announce the next steps.

The first/last mile connection Challenge will be divided into multiple categories of participants: leaders, startups and academia. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase the endurance, reliability, safety, cybersecurity, environmental suitability and consumer experience of their Automated Driving Systems (ADSs).

In summary, the Challenge is designed to catalyze innovation in driving automation through five objectives:

i. Advance self-driving technology in support of Dubai’s vision and strategy for smart mobility.

SMART MOBILITY

ACTIVE-AURORA Connected Vehicle Test Bed Network, CHAMBLEE, GEORGIA, USA

Client: City of Chamblee

Size: 3.54 KM

Services: Conceptual/Planning, Land Planning, Public Participation

The City of Chamblee, a rapidly urbanizing suburb of Atlanta, is exploring the use of automated shuttles in their community. Our team is evaluating the deployment of automated shuttles along the downtown main street, providing first/last mile transit connections to MARTA regional rail and Chamblee’s proposed mobility hub.

An automated shuttle system is envisioned to add transit service improvements for the rapidly developing, complete street corridor. Automated shuttles complement Chamblee’s emphasis on multimodal accommodations and comprehensive, transitoriented developments.

We collected and analyzed data from on-the-ground assessments, automated shuttle manufacturers, and public engagement focus groups. With our understanding of the state-of-the-art automated shuttle technology and transit best practices, we generated and evaluated automated shuttle route alternatives. A detailed analysis of the preferred route’s existing conditions identified infrastructure deficiencies that currently restrict automated shuttle operations. Finally, our preliminary concept plan identified the required, recommended, and optional infrastructure improvements for automated shuttle operations. The preliminary concept plan includes shuttle stops, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) connected

intersection design, multimodal accommodations, route conditioning, cost estimates, and operations.

We are helping the community understand the costs, benefits, and their readiness for automated transit. The shuttle feasibility study and concept plan is the prerequisite to implementation of the Chamblee automated shuttle pilot, one of the first mixed-traffic automated shuttles in North America.

Recycled Water Main Line from Yas Island to Saadiyat Island,

ABU DHABI, UAE

Client: Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC)

Services: Hydraulic Modeling, Municipal Wastewater Treatment, Infrastructure Rehabilitation, Biosolids Assessment; Management; and Facilities, Construction Support Services

The project, initiated by the Abu Dhabi Government, and implemented by the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) is to supply recycled water to Saadiyat Island from Yas Island, which has excess treated sewage effluent (TSE). Fahid Island, which is located between the two long Shiekh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Expressway (E12), will also be connected as part of this project.

This supply of recycled water to Saadiyat Island will eliminate the current use of potable water for irrigation purposes.

This proposed scheme involves transporting excess treated sewage effluent from nearby Yas Island to Saadiyat Island via an approximately 15-km-long pipeline along E12 with three sea channel crossings (horizontal directional drilling) and one road crossing (NDRC).

Stantec developed six different options comprising of a selection of viable pipeline materials and pump station configurations to ensure efficiency and sustainability was at the forefront to the solution. The optioneering process considered not only capital project costs and net present values, but also technical advantages to enable a lasting efficient operation and maintenance regime for ADDC. Once the most suitable and viable solution was chosen, Stantec are supervising the construction to ensure it is completed efficiently to budget and on time.

Panama Canal Third Set of Locks, PANAMA CITY, PANAMA

Client: Grupo Unido Por El Canal Services: Dams & Levees

The Third Set of Locks doubles the Canal’s capacity, ensuring the long-term viability of the Canal, while providing significant benefits to the local, regional and global economies.

Stantec was the lead designer of two Neo-Panamax lock complexes, comprising multiple lock chambers with associated filling and emptying system, lock gates, all mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and SCADA control systems, and associated navigation features (approach walls, bollards capstans, and marine fenders). Design vessel for the new locks is a 14,000 TEU container ship, triple the capacity of previous Panamax vessels.

The design-build contract for implementation of the Third Set of Locks project was awarded by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to international consortium Grupo Unidos Por el Canal (GUPC) in July 2009. Providing support to

GUPC for design, Stantec is the lead firm of the design joint venture, CICP Consultores Internacionales, LLC, in partnership with California-based TetraTech and Iv-Infra of the Netherlands.

The Panama Canal Expansion Program broke ground after overwhelming approval by a public referendum. The Program involves two new Post-Panamax lock complexes (Third Set of Locks), the deepening of the Pacific and Atlantic Canal entrances, deepening of Culebra Cut, widening and deepening of the Gatun Lake navigational channel and raising Lake Gatun to its maximum operational level.

Stantec received Autodesk’s BIM Experience Award for our BIM work on the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks Project, one of the first and largest civil works projects to deploy BIM.

We’ve designed thousands of buildings. And we wanted to make an iconic contribution to Edmonton’s skyline. So we let our creativity run wild. The result speaks for itself: The Stantec Tower.

Stantec’s architects and engineers designed this mixed-use tower, combining retail, commercial office, and luxury residential. Rising over 820 feet above the ICE District, the Tower provides a total of 1,303,165 SF of space. Stantec will be leasing 450,000 SF of the 600,000 SF of commercial space. The Tower’s design comprises 26 floors of office space, 320 luxury residential units and 1,258 below grade parking stalls. Consolidating over 1,700 Stantec employees into one iconic location, Stantec Tower will sit at the epicenter of Edmonton’s downtown revitalization. Once built, it will be one of the tallest structures in Alberta and home to the highest residential address west of Toronto.

The Tower’s energy efficient design will target LEED® Gold certification. The design team is working to combine the structure and light to transmit the energy of the vibrant plaza upwards, creating a distinctive landmark for Edmonton’s skyline. To resist lateral wind forces and vibration control, Stantec’s structural engineers combined a centre concrete core with a special steel outrigger system.

Anchoring the southeast corner of Edmonton’s ICE District, Stantec Tower stands 68 stories high, a beacon in the heart of the downtown core.
