“A picture is worth a thousand words” -the popular saying, deriving from Chinese philosopher Confucius, conveys the significance of visual art and imagery.

Any lover of language, poet or writer, might strongly dispute this claim, but there is no doubt that images, photographs, drawings, and even cartoons powerfully make an impact on the viewer and convey meaning, and have the ability to evoke a visceral emotional reaction. Think of political cartoons that comment on the current climate, or photographs of famine and natural disasters that provide a catalyst for donations and action.

Illustrations are a vital part of visual image-making.

Smart Solutions

◆ Client: Smart Solutions Management Consultants - UAE

◆ Date: May 2008

◆ Description: Smart Solutions is one of the leading business setup companies in the UAE. The management team requested me to design the company logo.

Solutions

DESIGN CONCEPT

I asked the client’s team for the company’s services, clients type, goals, ...etc. Then, I summarized their answers and selected the following main bullets to build the logo’s concept upon it.

COMPANY NAME: Two Langs – Clients Speak

Smart Solutions is a company helps its clients to setup and start their business in an Arabic country, that uses two languages in its government sectors: Arabic and English. For that, I got the idea to represent the two languages through the first letter from each language for the company name.

COMPANY SERVICES: Arrow of Success

Smart Solutions helps its clients to achieve success, and this can be represented by drawing a raised arrow in their logo. I took the advantage of both letters’ curved shapes by swapping letters’ original positions and then connecting them through their curves. And then frame them.

GOLDEN RATIO W/ NEGATIVE SPACE

I used a frame with a golden ratio to give the logo a pleasant appearance. After I reshaped both letters and then connected them to become one shape, I cut them out from the rectangle frame, then deleted both lower corners. The final look is a logo that uses negative space and shows a raised arrow coming out from two letters.

Tashieed

◆ Client: Tashieed Holding Group - UAE

◆ Date: April 2008

◆ Description: Tasheel Holding Group, marketed as Tasheed, is based in United Arab Emirates. Tashieed decided to rebrand itself. As a start point, they asked for a new logo that carries the company's name.

DESIGN CONCEPT

I decided to take advantage of the Arabic name and make my own decorative style version for it. I started with a sketch and then elaborated using Adobe Illustrator as shown on the image above. Then I add it on the top of the English font which holds the company's Latin name.

I selected Trade Gothic font to represent the company name. Then, I cut some of its Latin letters' edges, to make it balanced with the Arabic calligraphy shape that I did.

Last, I drew two dummy squares based on the first dots in the Arabic shape. These two frames acted as proxies to determine the position and size of the Latin name to the Arabic shape.

◆ Client: Serene International - UAE

◆ Date: December 2009

◆ Description: Serene International is a leading technical production company that delivers creative events and communication solutions using innovative methods and offers all types of Audio-Visual products.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The logo must be in bold since they provide audio and video services. The bold font of their logo will guarantee visibility on all types of screens.

I created the four waves coming out from a dot to show the audio innovation services from Serene. Then I placed the dot at the center of the last two 'e's. Last, I made the dot size close to the size of 'e' letter to connect the logo shape with the logo font.

Electronic Emirati Dirham

◆ Client: The UAE Ministry of Finance (MoF)

◆ Date: March 2009

◆ Description: A design competition for the MoF logo for the 2nd Generation e-Dirham system was held in 2009. This logo must be visible when its size is scaled down to its place on the plastic card. I participated by sending my following design proposal.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design concept is based on connecting the prefix e- (for electronic) with the Emirati dirham (coin). As a start, I made a circle representing the value of one dirham of the Emirati currency.

SHAPE:

'e' Through A Spinning Coin

The coin gives many curved shapes when you spin it. I traced the spinning traces to draw the prefix e, then selected four shapes from the traced spinning action. after I highlighted the lines which

draw the letter e, then I deleted the redundant lines. Last, I positioned the circle for the value of one dirham, inside the drawn prefix e shape. This circle act as the anchor for the logo parts.

COLORS: The Emirati Flag

I colored each shape from the logo 3 shapes by a color from the UAE flag colors, starting with the anchor point (the circle). I didn't use white color because it's the color for the basic version of the e-card.

Qatar Water Strategy

Water Resources Policy & National Strategy in the State of Qatar

◆ Client: The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA)

◆ Date: October 2018

◆ Description: Under Qatar Vision 2030, KAHRAMAA is developing an integrated water resources management plan for long-term water security. For some of its presentations on this topic, one of KAHRAMAA’s teams requested a logo to present one of its projects.

Qatar

DESIGN CONCEPT

Logo’s concept came out from recycling stormwater water for beneficial purposes such as agriculture and irrigation, potable water supplies, groundwater replenishment, industrial processes, and environmental restoration.

SHAPE: Three Water Drops in Motion

Since it’s a recycling process, I decided to use the concept of the recycle logo, because it’s the most recognizable logo of all time for recycling. I turned the 3 arrows into 3 curvy water drops flowing in a curvy triangle, embracing a bigger water drop.

COLOR: Bring Nature Into Logo

The stormwater recycling to irrigation water and potable water gave me the idea to present it in the logo as the 3 colors: yellow for sand, green for agriculture, and blue for water.

Final Logo Design

Qatar Water Strategy

The client wanted the logo to be with a realistic appearance. Therefore, I changed it to the final appearance with a reduced color tone.

The 6 th Cultural and Scientific Week for Universities —

and Higher Education Institutions in the Countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf

◆ Client: UAE University

◆ Date: November 2007

◆ Description: I designed the logo for this event, and followed it by a design for a billboard.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The Cultural and scientific week is an educational week for the university students at the GCC States. UAE University organized the 6th cycle in November 2007.

In Al-Ain city, hundreds of students from different GCC higher education institutions participated in this event with their scientific, educational and social output.

The design consisted of three-parts: -

a) Six-Feathers

The feather symbolizes trust, honor, strength, wisdom, power, and freedom.

Each feather from these six feathers represents a country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Feathers colors are taken from the GCC logo (the hexagon shape).

b) Arabic letter Ayin ‘

The six-feathers writing together the Arabic letter Ayin ‘ع’; which is the first Arabic letter in Al-Ain city in its Arabic name “ينـعـلا”.

Its red color represents the blood bond between the six GCC countries.

c) Thuluth Arabic Calligraphy

I made the title by the Thuluth Arabic calligraphy style, to emphasize the Arabic culture for this event.

Packaging design

Product packaging design refers to the creation of the exterior of a product. That includes choices in material and form as well as graphics, colors and fonts that are used on wrapping, a box, a can, a bottle or any kind of container.

Packaging design is the connection of form, structure, materials, color, imagery, typography, and regulatory information with ancillary design elements to make a product suitable for marketing. Its primary objective is to create a vehicle that serves to contain, protect, transport, dispense, store, identify, and distinguish a product in the marketplace. Ultimately, the goal of a packaging design is to meet marketing objectives by distinctively communicating a consumer product's personality or function and generating a sale.*

Swiss Coffee : Gold and Classic

◆ Client: Zarouni Foods Inc. ◆ Date: 2009

◆ Description: I designed both two types of instant coffee under the same brand name.

Zarouni Foods decided to have a different shape for each product, to help in distinguishing between them, in addition to the font style used for each type title. Product colors have been derived from the brand logo.

For the Gold type; its package is made out of a glass jar with a metal cover. I made it a cube shape, to take less space instore and be easy to handle. I added coffee bean shapes on its cover. These coffee bean shapes are engraved inside the metal cover, to help use opening this product easily.

I designed this small mug, to market this product. I made its shape curvy so it is easy in hand and to present the smoothness of the coffee taste.

Good publications require well-written text, appropriate illustrations, intelligent design and layout, careful typography, and good-quality printing and binding. Each step is important, whether producing a book, booklet, magazine, or newspaper.*

What do different kinds of publications have in common is the need for a good layout and typography. One that you can't put down and want to keep reading, whether that'd be online or with a copy in your hands.

Despite their captivating beauty, a true appreciation of these horses requires an understanding of a history spanning thousands of years and many of man's most glorious civilizations.  Robert Radison T he Arabian horse is breed of horse that originated in the Middle East. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most easily recognizable horse breeds in the world. It is one of the oldest horse breeds, with archaeological evidence of horses that resemble modern Arabians dating back 4,500 years. Throughout history, Arabian horses from the Middle East spread around the world by both war and trade, used to improve other breeds by adding speed, refinement, endurance, and good bone. Today, Arabian bloodlines are found in almost every modern breed of riding horse. The Arabian developed in desert climate and was prized by the nomadic Bedouin people, often being brought inside the family tent for shelter and protection. This close relationship with humans has created horse breed that good-natured, quick to learn, and willing to please. But the Arabian also developed the high spirit and alertness needed in horse used for raiding and war. This combination of willingness and sensitivity requires modern Arabian horse owners to handle their horses with competence and respect. "The Versatile Arabian" is a slogan of the breed. Arabians dominate the discipline of endurance riding, and compete today in many other fields of equestrian activity. They are one of the top ten most popular horse breeds in the world. Arabian horses are now found worldwide, including the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, continental Europe, South America like Brazil and Argentine. Arabians are one of the oldest human-developed horse breeds in the world. The original wild progenitors, the Oriental subtype or "Proto-Arabian" was horse with oriental characteristics similar to the modern Arabian. These horses appeared in rock paintings and inscriptions in the Arabian Peninsula as far back as 2,500 B.C. In ancient history, throughout the Ancient Near East, horses with refined heads and high-carried tails were depicted in artwork, particularly that of Ancient Egypt dating to the expulsion of the Hyksos invaders, in the 16th century, B.C. The Arabian horse prototype may have been domesticated by the people of the Arabian peninsula known today as the Bedouin, sometime after they learned to use the camel, approximately 4,0005,000 years ago. However, other scholars, noting that horses were common in the Fertile Crescent but rare in the Arabian peninsula prior to the rise of Islam, theorize that the breed as it is known today only developed in large numbers when the conversion of the Persians to Islam in the 7th century A.D. brought knowledge of horse breeding and horsemanship to the Bedouin. Strains and Pedigrees For centuries, the Bedouin tracked the ancestry of each horse through an oral tradition. Horses of the purest blood were known as Asil and crossbreeding with non-Asil horses was forbidden. Mares were the most valued, both for riding and breeding, and pedigree families were traced through the female line. The Bedouin did not believe in gelding male horses, and considered stallions too intractable to be good war horses, thus they kept very few male foals 16 FOCUS (colts), selling most, and culling those of poor quality. Over time, the Bedouin developed several sub-types or strains of Arabian horse, each with unique characteristics. The strains were traced through the maternal line, not through the paternal. According to the Arabian Horse Association, the five primary strains were known as the Keheilan, Seglawi, Abeyan, Hamdani and Hadban. There were also lesser strains, sub-strains, and regional variations in strain names. Thus, many Arabian horses were not only Asil, of pure blood, but also bred to be pure in strain as well, with crossbreeding between strains discouraged, though not forbidden, by some tribes. Purity of bloodline was very important to the Bedouin, and they also believed in telegony, believing if a mare was ever bred to a stallion of "impure" blood, the mare herself and all future offspring would be "contaminated" by the stallion and hence no longer Asil. Carl Raswan, promoter and writer about Arabian horses from the middle of the 20th century, held the belief that there were only three strains, Kehilan, Seglawi and Muniqi. Raswan felt that these strains represented body "types" of the breed, with the Kehilan being "masculine", the Seglawi being "feminine" and the Muniqi being "speedy". Breed characteristics Arabian horses have refined, wedge-shaped heads, broad forehead, large eyes, large nostrils, and small muzzles. Most display distinctive concave or "dished" profile. Many Arabians also have slight forehead bulge between their eyes, called the "jibbah" by the Bedouin, that adds additional sinus capacity, believed to have helped the Arabian horse in its native dry desert climate. Another breed characteristic is an arched neck with large, well-set windpipe set on a refined, clean throatlatch. This structure of the poll and throatlatch was called the mithbah or mithbeh by the Bedouin, and in the best Arabians is long, allowing flexibility in the bridle. Other distinctive features are a relatively long, level croup and naturally high tail carriage. Well-bred Arabians have deep, wellangled hip and well laid-back shoulder. Most have a compact body with short back. Some, though not all, have lumbar vertebrae instead of the usual 6, and 17 rather than 18 pairs of ribs. Thus, even small Arabian can carry heavy rider with ease. Arabians usually have dense, strong bone, sound feet, and good hoof walls. They are especially noted for endurance. Some people confuse the refinement of Arabians with having weak or too-light bone. However, the USEF breed standard requires Arabians have solid bone and correct conformation, and the superiority of the breed in endurance competition clearly demonstrates that well-bred Arabians are strong, sound horses with good bone and superior stamina. At international levels of FEIsponsored endurance events, Arabians and half-Arabians are the dominant performers in distance competition worldwide. Size The breed standard for Arabian horses, as stated by the United States Equestrian Federation, describes the Arabians as standing between 14.1 and 15.1 hands (57 to 61 inches (145 to 155 cm)) tall, "with the occasional individual over or under." Thus, all Arabians, regardless of height, are classified as "horses," even though 14.2 hands (58 inches (147 cm)) is the traditional cutoff height between a horse and a pony. A common myth that Arabians are not strong because of their size. However, the Arabian horse is noted for a greater density of bone than other breeds, short cannons, sound feet, and broad, short back; all of which give the breed physical strength comparable to many taller animals. Clearly, for tasks where the sheer weight of the horse matters, such as farm work done by a draft horse, or team roping, any lighterweight horse is at disadvantage, but for most purposes, the Arabian is a strong and hardy breed of light horse able to carry any type of rider in most equestrian pursuits. Temperament For centuries, Arabian horses lived in the desert in close association with humans. For shelter and protection from theft, prized war mares were sometimes kept in their owner's tent, close to children and everyday family life. Only horses with naturally good disposition were allowed to reproduce. The result that Arabians today have temperament that, among other examples, makes them one of the few breeds for which the United States Equestrian Federation allows children to exhibit stallions in nearly all show ring classes, including those limited to riders under 18. Colors The Arabian Horse Association recognizes purebred horses with the coat colors bay, gray, chestnut, black, and roan. Bay, gray and chestnut are the most common, black is less common. True roan may not actually exist in Arabians; rather, roaning in the Arab could simply be a manifestation of the sabino or rabicano genes. All Arabians, no matter the coat color, have black skin, except under white markings. Black skin provided protection from the hot desert sun. Arabian Stallion and Saudi Arabia Today, purebred Arabian horses are found throughout the world, treasured not only for their unparalleled beauty, but also for their people-oriented character, versatility under saddle, and superority in the discipline of endurance racing. All of these attributes are legacies from the bedouin breeders of centuries past, who also taught us that when these horses are regarded with respect and admiration, they respond with extraordinary loyalty In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and throughout the Arabian Gulf and Near East, great care is being taken to preserve the cultural legacy of the Arabian horse. Breeders in the region have collected horses from the finest international bloodstock and continue to garner the most prestigious show and racing titles in the world. Though modern innovations have replaced the traditional role of the Arabian horse. Many of the greatest advances of civilization, including the profound Islamic contributions in mathematics, medicine, and science, were accomplished in partnership with the Arabian horse. “Arabian horses have refined, wedgeshaped heads, a broad forehead, large eyes, large nostrils, and small muzzles” 17

The project was split into two main components, residential and commercial, with the podium providing a critical link between a rail station and adjacent developments in the surrounding area. The unusual form required a redesign of the process used to develop architecture, challenging BIM experts, animators, software engineers and architects to create new ways of dealing with vast quantities of data effectively. This process integrates energy modeling, animation, BIM and financial modeling into real-time investigative design approach. The hospitality component is 250 key boutique hotel on the 50th floor of the commercial tower with dedicated lobby, lifts and service spaces, health club, spa, food and beverage outlets and a podium conference center.

FEATURED PROJECT University of British Columbia Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA Our design reflects Vancouver Coastal Health’s unique whole brain approach, in which neuroscience, geriatric medicine, rehabilitation, mental health and addiction initiatives are integrated with interdisciplinary research in way that has never been done before. Integration, collaboration, flexibility, and sustainability are the core values for the new center. The project site is immediately adjacent to the Koerner Pavilion of the University of British Columbia hospital and is strategically poised to both unify health sciences while enhancing the cohesion of the larger campus. We designed the components of the center to reflect principles and create unique functional spaces. The research laboratories are light and airy – Research Air – celebrating the optimism of the health sciences. The patient areas are of the garden Clinic Ground – calm and supportive of a therapeutic environment characterized by light and nature. Synapse, key to positive brain function, was the inspiration for the Synapse Atrium – a network of space that ensures quality, frequency, and quantity of constructive collaboration between researcher, physician and patient. Services: Architecture FEATURED PROJECT National Center for Cancer Care and Research DOHA, QATAR The NCCCR is a forward-looking cancer hospital aiming to lead global trend in how modern health facilities maximise healing and cures while developing preventions for cancer in truly unique, sustainable and nurturing environment. Sited on prominent corner of the Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City campus Doha, the NCCCR has been designed as flagship facility characterised by the integration of architecture, art, light and nature. The design draws on evidence-based research to increase contact with the external environment for patients (therapeutic benefit) and staff (efficiency and wellbeing). An impressive 228 gardens enhance the patient experience. Whilst demonstrably modern and fresh, the NCCCR is aesthetically in tune with its local environs and culturally sensitive to the needs of its Qatari community. The architectural language of the building bridges Doha’s modern and historic districts through selection of classic materials and high performance gazing for optimum light transmission/control into the interiors. key element of the building façade is its ‘veil’ contemporary interpretation of the traditional mashrabiya. The veil’s distinct geometric pattern creates a strong visual identity for the NCCCR within the campus. We’ve partnered with the City since commencing that effort in 2004, completing multiple upgrade projects at their 1950’s-era wastewater treatment and reclamation facility. Stantec helped with wide range of projects, including master planning (which involved analysis of disposal, reclamation, process and conveyance alternatives), nitrification denitrification and aeration system upgrades, solids handling upgrades, UV disinfection, cloth media filtration and solar drying beds for biosolids. The new plant has been expanded from MGD to 12 MGD average dry weather flow (ADWF), with preliminary design considerations to accommodate 20 MGD ADWF. Recently Stantec helped the City with Wastewater Collection System Master Plan (2017) to address system needs to serve their Vision 2030 General Plan build-out. In addition to hydraulic modeling (InfoWorks) to assess capacity deficiencies and identify improvements to the collection system, we evaluated treatment and reclamation alternatives, purple pipes, effluent reuse, flooding impacts, groundwater recharge and impacts/ benefits to the regional water supply. Master planning documents concluded that growth may be accommodated at the Wastewater Treatment and Reclamation Facility site for up to 34 MGD ADWF of treatment, disposal and reclamation capacity. One of the biggest problems with wastewater is what to do with the biosolids often they’re sent to landfill, creating economic and environmental costs for the city and its residents. Our new system creates the highest EPA-rated class A biosolids, which are now sold to fertilize valuable local crops. Saving the environment, supporting local farms, and earning money for our client. Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) We use state-of-the-art process modeling and hydraulics tools that optimise our wastewater plant designs in order to achieve very low levels of nutrients in plant effluents. Our recent BNR process designs have included activated sludge with enhanced biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal, sidestream enhanced biological phosphorus removal and deammonification, biologically aerated filters/de-nitrification filters, integrated fixed film/activated sludge, and membrane bioreactors (MBR). Operational Optimization and Sustainability Operational optimization at existing wastewater treatment plants reduces operating costs, reduces or eliminates chemical additions, reduces energy consumption, and reduces GHG emissions, all by focusing on maximizing the use of existing resources and infrastructure, and managing carbon and residuals inventories. Today, the term design is generally used for what was formerly called the applied arts. The boundaries between art and design are blurred, largely due to a range of applications both for the term 'art' and the term 'design'.

Design can be used to promote and sell products, to convey a message, or to develop a brand identity. Though some graphic design has a commercial purpose, graphic design can also be a form of art and expression.

Graphic design is communication design.
