THERAPY IS

NEW YEAR,NEW MINDSET:

Mental Health for Teens

FROM A LICENSED COUNSELOR’S PERSPECTIVE

A new year is a great time to reflect, reset, and refocus not just on your goals but on your mental health too. With the pressures of school, social life, and family, taking care of your mental health is more important than ever. Here are some tips to start the year with a positive and balanced mindset.

Set Realistic Goals

While setting goals is important, it’s easy to overdo it and feel overwhelmed. Focus on one or two meaningful goals, like improving your study habits or spending more time with loved ones. Break these down into smaller steps and celebrate small victories along the way.

Practice Gratitude

It’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong, but taking time to appreciate the good can shift your perspective. Start a gratitude journal where you write down three things you’re thankful for each day Over time, this small habit can boost your mood and help you focus on the positives.

Learn to Say “No”

Between school, clubs, sports, and hanging out with friends, your schedule can get packed fast Remember, it’s okay to say no to extra responsibilities if it means protecting your mental health. You don’t have to do it all.

Take Social Media Breaks

Scrolling through social media can make you feel like you’re falling behind or not good enough Take breaks from your phone and spend more time doing things that make you happy reading, drawing, or just hanging out with friends in real life

Tips for Teens

Focus on goals you can realistically accomplish Break them into smaller steps and celebrate progress along the way

2. Create a Routine

Having a daily routine can help you feel more in control. Schedule time for homework, hobbies, and relaxation to keep your day balanced.

3. Practice Gratitude Daily

Start or end your day by writing down three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude can help shift your focus from stress to positivity.

4. Prioritize Sleep

Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Proper rest improves mood, focus, and overall well-being.

5. Limit Screen Time

Take breaks from social media and technology. Use that time to connect with friends, get active, or try something new.

6. Learn Relaxation Techniques

Try deep breathing, meditation, or journaling to manage stress and anxiety. Even 10 minutes a day can make a difference.

7. Build a Support Network

Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you. Don’t hesitate to lean on friends, family, or teachers for support.

8. Seek Help When Needed

It’s okay to ask for help. Whether it’s talking to a trusted adult or seeing a therapist, getting support is a sign of strength.

1 1 Set Small, Achievable Goals

POWERFUL.

New Year, New Mindset

Build a Support Network

Surround yourself with people who lift you up Talk to friends, family, or a trusted teacher if you’re feeling stressed. You don’t have to go through tough times alone there’s always someone willing to listen

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is all about being present and focused on the moment. Simple activities like deep breathing, yoga, or even listening to calming music can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall mood

Ask for Help When You Need It

If things ever feel too overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out for help Talk to a school counselor or therapist they’re there to support you, not judge you. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

A Fresh Start

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Starting the year with healthy habits can make all the difference in how you feel and handle challenges. Remember, it’s okay to have tough days, but don’t let them define your year Take it one day at a time, and make self-care a priority Let’s make this year your best yet mind, body, and soul!

AJourneyofDedicationandGrowth

Anariah Howell, a senior at Harrison Central High School, has spent her life balancing a wide range of interests and responsibilities. Born on January 4, 2007, she is the oldest of four siblings—Isabelle, Mariyiah, and Johnathon—whom she is incredibly close with. Being the eldest, Anariah has always taken on the role of protector and guide, ensuring that she sets a positive example for her younger siblings. Her family is her biggest support system, and she is equally devoted to them.

From a young age, Anariah has been highly active, participating in a variety of activities. At just three years old, she began dancing, mastering styles like ballet, tap, lyrical, jazz, and pointe. By six, she added soccer to her repertoire, playing as a midfielder and defense. During her seventh and eighth grades, she took on volleyball and band, but it was band that truly captured her attention in high school. Initially starting as a clarinet player, Anariah felt drawn to leadership, which led her to pursue becoming a drum major. The role challenged her in ways she had not expected, pushing her to step out of her quiet nature and take charge. By her sophomore year, she was not only a drum major but later became the head drum major in her junior and senior years, a role that taught her invaluable lessons about leadership, responsibility, and personal growth.

While she found great joy in her extracurriculars, Anariah's focus has always remained on her future. As a senior, she has spent a great deal of time planning for her career and setting goals. Upon graduation, Anariah will attend Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where she plans to major in Radiography. Her dream is to become a Radiology Technologist, specializing in x-ray technology for two years before obtaining her certification in Mammography. This career path is especially meaningful to her, as she is passionate about helping women through her work.

Looking back, Anariah reflects on the challenges and successes that have shaped her into the person she is today. Through each experience, she has learned, grown, and built a foundation for her future. With her unwavering dedication to her goals, she is excited for the journey that lies ahead, knowing that there is so much more to discover and accomplish. Anariah Howell's story is a testament to the power of hard work, family, and determination.

ADVICE ON NUMBERS

Dear Teens,

Math can sometimes feel challenging, but with the right approach, you can master it. Here are a few tips to help you succeed:

PracticeRegularly: The more you practice, the better you'll understand the concepts. Set aside time each day to work on math problems.

AskforHelp: Don’t hesitate to ask your teachers, friends, or family for help if you’re stuck. Sometimes a different perspective can make things clearer.

UseOnlineResources: There are many online tools and videos that can help explain difficult topics in a way that’s easy to understand. Check out TikTok and search the mathematical concept.

StayPositive: A positive mindset can make a big difference. Believe in your ability to learn and improve.

Remember, math is a skill that can be developed with effort and persistence. Keep practicing, and you’ll see improvement over time.

Pro Tips for the Perfect Look

LAYERING IN THE WINTER: FASHION MEETS FUNCTION

Start with the Basics

Your base layer is the foundation of your outfit. Opt for thermal tops, lightweight long-sleeves, or moisture-wicking fabrics to keep warm and dry. Stick to neutral tones like white, beige, or black they’re versatile and easy to pair with other pieces.

Add Warmth with the Middle Layer

The middle layer is where you can get creative. Chunky knit sweaters, turtlenecks, or flannel shirts are great choices. This is your chance to add textures and patterns to your look. A classic cable-knit sweater or a plaid flannel can bring personality to your outfit.

Top it Off with Outerwear

Your outermost layer should protect you from the elements while elevating your style. Consider a tailored wool coat for a sophisticated look or a puffer jacket for something sporty and casual. Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colors or metallic finishes they’ll help you stand out in a sea of neutrals

Accessorize Smartly

Accessories are not just for style they’re functional too! A scarf, beanie, and gloves in matching tones can tie your outfit together. Don’t forget a pair of stylish boots, which can make or break your look. Opt for insulated options to keep your toes warm.
