CHOOSE A REWARDING CAREER IN THE MEDICAL FIELD: An Interview with Dr. Whitney Nash, Dean of the Waters College of Health Professions

Choosing the medical field as a career can be a gratifying choice for several reasons. We had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Whitney Nash, the Dean of Waters College of Health Professions, who shared valuable insights into the field and the benefits of pursuing a career in healthcare. Here's what she had to say:

CPE: How did you know that working in the medical field was right for you?

Dr. Nash explained, "I was interested in the medical field from the time I could read. Caring for others as well as a love for science motivated me to pursue a career in healthcare." For those considering a career in medicine, a genuine passion for helping others and a curiosity about the human body are excellent indicators of suitability.

CPE: What soft skills are local employers looking for when they hire medical professionals?

"Absolutely customer service skills," Dr. Nash emphasized. "In the very competitive market, a positive customer experience can make the difference between securing a lifetime client or having them leave after the first encounter." The ability to communicate effectively, show empathy, and provide exceptional patient care are highly valued by employers.

CPE: How beneficial would it be for someone to receive a continuing education certificate like Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Medical Billing and Coding, or Patient Care Technician (PCT)?

Dr. Nash highlighted the significance of these certifications, stating, "All of these roles are critical either as a permanent career choice or as a beginning step to a higher-level opportunity." Continuing education certificates in fields such as Clinical Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, or Patient Care Technicians can open doors to diverse career paths and help individuals gain valuable skills in the healthcare industry.

CPE: What certifications would be helpful for someone who may not have a degree to get a start in medicine?

"Certainly a CNA [Certified Nursing Assistant], phlebotomist, or PCT if the student is interested in patient care," Dr. Nash suggested. "Medical coding is also a very in-demand career right now." These certifications offer valuable entry points for individuals seeking opportunities in the medical field, even without a formal degree.

CPE: How can certifications impact job prospects or earning potential for people who do have a degree?

"We are looking for individuals who can fill a variety of roles, as well as those who can step in when their co-workers are absent," Dr. Nash explained. Certifications provide additional expertise and demonstrate a commitment to professional development, enhancing job prospects and potentially increasing earning potential.

CPE: Is there anything else that you’d like to tell people about your field or Waters College of Health Professions?

Dr. Nash expressed, "There is no time in history that there has been more of a need for qualified health care workers. Financial aid is available and our programs are opening more slots for students. Don't put off seeking a degree or certification!"

Choosing a career in the medical field can lead to a fulfilling and impactful journey. With the opportunity to make a positive difference, job stability, continuous learning, diverse career options, financial rewards, and personal growth, it's no wonder that the medical field is a popular choice. However, as Dr. Nash advises, dedication, hard work, and a commitment to lifelong learning are crucial factors to consider before embarking on this path. Whether you choose a degree or certification program, the rewards and opportunities in the medical field are vast, and now is an opportune time to pursue your dreams.

AS AN ENTREPRENEUR: THE POWER OF EARNING A SHRM CERTIFICATION

An Interview with Vernisha Crawford, a CPE SHRM Student

SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) is a globally recognized professional organization dedicated to advancing the field of human resource management. Georgia Southern University Continuing and Professional Education (CPE), in partnership with SHRM, provides resources, certifications, and networking opportunities for HR professionals to enhance their skills, knowledge, and credibility in the industry. We had the opportunity to ask Vernisha Crawford, CEO of Trauma Informed Institute, some questions about her experience during and since receiving a SHRM certification.

CPE: What motivated you to pursue this certification, and how has it helped you in your career?

VC: “As an aspiring entrepreneur, I recognized the importance of continuous learning. After engaging in numerous business courses, trainings, and workshops, I came to realize that despite having excellent plans, products, and services, the absence of effective people management systems could pose a significant risk to any company's success.”

CPE: What specific skills or knowledge did you gain from the certification, and how have you applied these in your work?

VC: “The certification program emphasized the criticality of compliance in business operations. While compliance may initially seem like an insignificant aspect, disregarding it can have severe consequences for a company. Recognizing this, I incorporated compliance measures into my business practices to ensure long-term success.”

CPE: How has this certification impacted your job prospects or earning potential?

VC: “Implementing the knowledge gained from this certification greatly improved my ability to manage my company. I made strategic investments in HR systems and personnel to oversee crucial aspects such as company policies and payroll. Recognizing that I couldn't handle everything alone as an entrepreneur, this certification helped me understand the significance of delegating responsibilities. As a result, my business experienced remarkable growth, with revenue escalating from $90,000 to $300,000 within a year of completing the program. Moving forward to 2023, I have expanded my business portfolio internationally and successfully secured and managed high-value client projects.”

CPE: What challenges did you face while preparing for the certification, and how did you overcome them?

VC: “Effective time management proved to be my most significant challenge throughout the preparation process. I tend to take on numerous tasks without creating sufficient space to complete them all. However, I overcame this hurdle by adopting a more mindful approach. I read the material at my own pace, attended classes whenever possible, utilized available resources, and focused on

comprehending the concepts and valuable content. This approach has played a pivotal role in establishing a sustainable business portfolio.”

CPE: Would you recommend this certification to others in your field, and if so, why? How do you believe it could benefit them in their careers?

VC: “Absolutely, I would highly recommend this certification to every entrepreneur. It provides valuable insights into people management, compliance, and HR—the essential pillars of running a successful business. Even without obtaining the formal certification, the knowledge gained from this program can significantly transform one's entrepreneurial journey, leading to more informed decision-making and improved outcomes.”

The collaboration between CPE and SHRM has paved the way for HR professionals in the Coastal Georgia region to elevate their careers and entrepreneurs to build successful businesses.
