Annual Impact Report 2021-2022

A Message from the Board Chair & CEO

Dear Friends of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey,

During our fiscal year 2022, Girl Scouts celebrated 110 years of preparing girls for a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success, and we couldn’t be prouder to share the highlights from our year, recognizing the many accomplishments of our 18,000 Girl Scouts in northern New Jersey. Through the support of our valued volunteers, Board of Directors, staff, donors and members, our Girl Scouts participated in a wide range of program activities, take action projects, and initiatives across our four pillars of STEM, the Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship, which enabled them to gain experience along with courage and confidence.

At Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, 2022 was a year of transition and also of growth as we welcomed a new President/Chief Executive Officer, saw tremendous growth in contributed income through donations, sold 27% more Girl Scout Cookies than the year prior, and expanded our community engagement outreach capabilities to better meet diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice objectives. We saw a return to travel and to Broadway, exceeded our membership goals, logged hundreds of miles hiking and backpacking, and celebrated three years of Gold Award Girl Scouts with a special event.

What we love to see are the incredible connections our Girl Scouts have built with each other and their communities. We value the sisterhood that is fostered through Girl Scouting and know that as girls learn about how to support each other and create healthy relationships, they can together make changes in their community. We are so proud of the way that our Girl Scouts are making the world a better place.

We remain committed to delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to engage and inspire girls to find their voice. We continue to innovate and find ways to better connect in our community for the benefit of the girls. And most importantly, we thank you so much for your partnership and all you do to provide the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to the 18,000 Girl Scouts in northern New Jersey.

Sincerely,

Bette M. Simmons

Program Highlights

At Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, Fiscal Year 2022 was a year of transition and growth as we welcomed a new President/Chief Executive Officer, Sandra A. Kenoff, and continued to return to in-person events as we emerged from the pandemic.

We remained committed to delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to engage and inspire girls to find their voice, and strived to serve girls in all ZIP codes to help them reach their full potential through participation in Girl Scouting.

In addition to program activities focused on the program’s pillars of STEM, Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship, Girl Scouts held a collaborative event with actor and Girl Scout alum, Kristen Bell, on May 19. Girls who purchased extended-year Girl Scout memberships or renewed their memberships early for 2022-2023, were invited to the Paint Your World Purple event, during which the actress introduced her children’s book, “The World Needs More Purple People,” and discussed the importance of being inquisitive, having a great work ethic, being your true self, and developing connections with others as a “purple person” and a Girl Scout.

As the 13th largest Girl Scout council in girl and adult membership (out of 111), ranking fourth in overall retention, we served nearly 18,000 girl members and almost 10,000 adult members in Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Sussex, and northern Warren counties of New Jersey.

To better engage with girls in grades K-5, we held Daisy & Brownie Sparkling Adventure and Winter Wonderland sessions for girls who were new to Girl Scouts and hosted 415 girl participants. As a result, 131 adult volunteers stepped up to be troop leaders from these efforts.

Program Highlights

More than 5,553 girls and 1,612 adults participated in a variety of program activities at our council. Our Trailblazers hiking and backpacking group led 150 members on weekend trips that included trekking across New Jersey’s portion of the Appalachian Trail. More than 60 girls joined our robotics teams to compete in FIRST TECH and FIRST LEGO events, and our Steel Magnolias FIRST TECH team ended their season in the top 10% of the 220 robotics teams in the state.

We celebrated the 110th Anniversary of the Girl Scout movement during 2022, and conducted several large-scale events including a:

• Virtual Financial Literacy Program for Girl Scouts of all levels sponsored by Morgan Stanley

• Girls Go Grand…Canyon staff-led excursion to Arizona

• Council-wide Girl Scout Cookie Rally at Nickelodeon Universe in the American Dream mall

Gold Award Girl Scouts

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable and proof that not only can Girl Scouts make a difference, but through their Gold Award projects, they already have. Seniors and Ambassadors who earn the Gold Award tackle issues that are dear to them and drive lasting change in their communities and beyond. The Gold Award is a key that can open doors to scholarships, preferred admission tracks for college, and amazing career opportunities. Girl Scout Adventures

On March 12, 2022, Girl Scouts of the USA marked 110 years of building girls or courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

On July 13, 2022, after being apart during the pandemic years, we gathered in-person and celebrated our problem solvers, go-getters, dreamers, and doers, who are creating a better future for us all. We held a Girl Scout Gold Award and 110th Anniversary Celebration at The Legacy Castle in Pompton Plains, N.J. and celebrated the accomplishments of our Girl Scouts from the previous 3 years, including the following outstanding achievements.

Our Gold Award Girl Scout Aria Chalileh was a GSUSA 2022 National Scholarship Recipient for her Peer-to-Peer Vaping Awareness Campaign. Aria’s Gold Award project addressed the growing vaping epidemic in her community and its potential health consequences, specifically in youth. She utilized a peer-to-peer educational approach to inform youth about deceptive marketing and the harmful effects of vaping.

Working with local school officials and youth advocates she conducted virtual and in-person presentations for students at different schools. To increase adult awareness of this issue, Aria reached out to mayors, town newspapers, and libraries, and utilized social media. Social media was key in promoting her message. She recorded her presentation on YouTube, created trendy content for her @ditchthevape Instagram account, created a YouTube video entitled “Incorruptible,” and wrote and published the article, “Anatomy of the Vaping Epidemic.”

Audrey Pagan, a Girl Scout Senior from Morris Plains, reached a major hiking milestone during this year—one she achieved largely in part due to her membership in Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey’s Trailblazers hiking and backpacking group. As a long-time Trailblazers member, Audrey had tackled 66 miles or nearly 90% of the New Jersey stretch of the Appalachian Trail, which spans 74 miles. Audrey’s participation in countless Trailblazers excursions helped her rack up most of her miles on the Appalachian Trail, and she completed her final stretch of the trail on June 28, 2022.

Not only did Trailblazers position Audrey to meet this impressive hiking milestone, it also taught her and her fellow group members valuable outdoor skills such as map reading, trail etiquette, packing for day and overnight hikes, knife safety, cooking and food storage, tent set-up and more. Our Trailblazers program reinforces the importance of time outdoors for girls, which is one of the four pillars of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

When Gold Award Girl Scout Valencia Julien was determining the focus of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project, she wanted to pick something close to her heart. Since witnessing the effects of Alzheimer’s on her grandparents firsthand, Valencia has become an advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness and education, especially for children, and has been a volunteer at the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater New Jersey. Knowing how difficult it can be for children to comprehend the toll the disease can take on their loved ones, she was inspired to write a children’s book titled, “Giselle Learns About Alzheimer’s” to explain the disease in simple terms and illustrate some of its effects.

Since African Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as older white Americans and less likely to be diagnosed in earlier stages of the disease, Valencia’s book is an especially powerful tool to enhance awareness of the disease and help educate children in African American communities and beyond whose loved ones may be impacted by Alzheimer’s. Recognizing her valuable contributions, the Morris County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) honored Valencia with their 90th Anniversary Freedom Fund Youth Council Award. Since publishing the book, Valencia is amplifying the reach of her story, holding workshops to teach elementary aged children about Alzheimer’s. Valencia’s book can be downloaded for free on Lulu.com and an audio book is available on YouTube in several languages.

Lake Rickabear & Jockey Hollow Camps

Girl Scout camp is where girls thrive in the great outdoors, and in summer 2022 at our Jockey Hollow Day Camp in Mendham and Lake Rickabear Day Camp in Kinnelon, girls had fun acquiring new skills in a safe and supportive all-girl environment with a variety of opportunities to learn, grow, and build courage, confidence, and character. Girls engaged in cooking, riding horses, zip lining, archery, woodworking, and more.

• 1,290 girls participated in our summer camps

• 724 girls attended Jockey Hollow Day Camp

• 566 girls attended Lake Rickabear Day Camp

Community Engagement

Continuing our efforts to address diversity, equity, and inclusion, we established a Community Engagement department with a core focus on serving girls in under-resourced and emerging communities within our jurisdiction. This department’s initiatives included providing staff-led Girl Scouting opportunities throughout the school year during lunch hours and after school, as well as program activities during summer months with our Celebrate Girls Summer Program and other collaborations with city recreation departments.

• 1,002 girls were introduced to Girl Scouting

• 649 girls participated in school programs

• 353 girls participated in summer programs

We also introduced Girl Scouts Lead, a 12-week Community Engagement program that helps girls engage in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience with a special focus on learning how businesses can help others, exploring STEM careers, discovering how to stand against racism and pledge to work for a just society, practicing mental wellness, creating positive change in the community, and more.

Celebrate Girls Summer Program

At our Celebrate Girls Summer Program in Paterson, we served 127 girls during seven one-week sessions held in July and August. Activities included outdoor games, nature walks, sports, swimming, arts and crafts, drama, dance, hands-on science activities, book club, and earning Girl Scout Badges. Weekly field trips on Wednesdays were to Urban Air, NY Aquarium, a Broadway Show, Jenkinson’s Aquarium, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Dream, Museum of Natural History, and Liberty Science Center. Weekly field trips to Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon were held every Friday.

Annual Meeting & Adult Recognition Events

We held our 15th Annual Meeting virtually via Zoom on May 11, 2022. At the meeting, new GSNNJ Board members and Girl Representatives were sworn into office. Our Mission Moment speaker for the evening was Gold Award Girl Scout Valencia Julien from Morristown, who eloquently told the story of the inspiration for her Gold Award project, which addressed the issue of Alzheimer’s awareness and education for children.

The 2022 Adult Recognition Event was held in September at The Cosmopolitan in Wayne. We are so grateful for our volunteers and we were happy to be able to celebrate their accomplishments in-person once again with over 200 volunteers and staff in attendance.

Women of Achievement

Women of Achievement 2022, our largest fundraiser of the year, was celebrated at the Westmount Country Club on April 6, 2022. There were more than 320 guests in attendance and an active silent auction online. The event raised over $200,000 to help expand the impact and reach of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience in northern New Jersey.

We honored these extraordinary local women leaders for their personal and professional accomplishments:

Pia House Walker, Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer, St. Joseph’s Health

Farhanna Sayegh, Multicultural Marketing Director, CQ fluency

Carol A. Vargas, Vice President, Integrated Care, Atlantic Health System

O’Kneeka I. Roberts, Account Executive, Salesforce (Elinor J. Ferdon Young

Woman of Promise)

Betty A. Garger, Former Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey

(Mitzi Golbek Spirit of Girl Scouting Award)
