Born and raised in Venice, Davide Majer is a highly-successful Yoga instructor who practices this intense physical and spiritual activity on the altana rooftop terraces of Venice

text Federica Repetto When did you discover Yoga?

I didn’t discover yoga. Yoga discovered me. This is my favorite reply to those who ask me this question.

What does yoga mean to you?

Yoga is my way of life. Teaching yoga means following this pathway and going with the flow of what life has in store for me. Jaya Yoga, my studio in Venice, was conceived with this awareness. Being a Yogi (editor’s note: a person who practices Yoga) means going by ethics based on profound values, such as non violence and unconditioned love. The positions (asana) are therefore increasingly challenging and complex.

Is it true that you hold lessons on rooftops?

Yes, it’s true! The idea came to my wife Chiara. I hold my lessons on the altana rooftop terraces of Venice. They are exclusive places with breathtaking views where you can experience emotions you never knew existed, both during and after the sessions. It’s quite unique.

Trying is believing.

How does one enhance their spiritual growth?

Personal practice is fundamental. I meditate every day, read books on traditional spiritual Yogic and go to ashrams regularly, especially the one at Villa Vrindavana, to attend courses and seminars.

What is your long-cherished dream?

To train new yoga instructors in Italy and abroad. Share my knowledge, passion and enthusiasm with people who, like me, wish to take this wonderful journey.

Quando si è avvicinato allo Yoga?

Non sono io che ho trovato lo Yoga, è lo Yoga che ha trovato me. Così amo rispondere a chi mi fa questa domanda.

Quale significato ha per Lei questa disciplina?

Lo Yoga è la mia strada di vita, insegnare Yoga è seguire questa strada fluendo secondo quello che la vita ha in serbo per me. Da questa consapevolezza è nato Jaya Yoga, il mio studio a Venezia. Essere uno Yogi (ndr praticante di Yoga) significa avere un codice etico fondato su valori profondi come la non violenza e l’amore incondizionato, si tratta quindi di limitarsi a fare posizioni (asana) sempre più difficili e complesse. È vero che tiene lezioni meditando sopra i tetti della città?

Sì, è vero! È stata mia moglie Chiara ad avere l’idea. Faccio lezioni sulle altane di Venezia: posti esclusivi con panorami mozzafiato che regalano sensazioni uniche durante e dopo la pratica. È un’esperienza originale, provare per credere.

Cosa fare per arricchire la propria crescita spirituale?

La pratica personale è fondamentale. Faccio meditazione tutti i giorni, leggo i testi della tradizione spirituale Yogica e mi reco abitualmente negli ashram, soprattutto quello di villa Vrindavana, a seguire corsi e seminari.

Il suo sogno nel cassetto?

Formare nuovi insegnanti in Italia e all’estero. Trasmettere la mia conoscenza, la mia passione e il mio entusiasmo a persone che come me sentono il desiderio di intraprendere questo percorso.

Words have the power to change reality. They are the first manifestation of thought, the first grain of a new telluric settlement.

For ten years now, you have been organizing M’editare, an annual conference dedicated to self-publishing.

I launched self-publishing in Venice, but all the Amanuensis work, from books on magic to the recipes of the Benedictines, was already self-publishing. What I add to this is taking on editorial responsibility and having respect for the creative metabolism.

What poems do you habitually read?

I love Ecclesiastes, Rumi, Dickinson, Majakovsky. I prefer the sung word. Perhaps the writer who has influenced me the most is Bob Dylan.

Your next collection of poetry?

Il Monte sopra il Cielo, 33 poesie sui Cambiamenti Climatici (The Mount above Heaven, 33 Poems on Climate Change), inspired by observations of the weather anomalies from 2010 to today in my garden. And the series of poems on the different ways of loving is ready.

One of your poetic verses for Venice...

Whether there is any foundation to it or not, in the name of Venice I feel a bond with the Latin Venus. Almost the evocative root of that name, buried by the mud of the barene, that still has to deliver a program of love that has been silenced.

Ho lanciato a Venezia l’autoeditoria, ma tutta la pratica amanuense, dai libri di magia alle ricette benedettine, era già autoeditoria. Io vi aggiungo l’assunzione della responsabilità editoriale e il rispetto del proprio metabolismo creativo.

Quali sono le poesie che legge abitualmente?

Amo l’Ecclesiaste, Rumi, Dickinson, Majakovskij, prediligo la parola cantata, forse l’autore che più mi ha influenzato è Bob Dylan.

Al di là di ogni fondatezza, nel nome di Venezia sento un legame col latino Venus. Quasi che la suggestiva radice di quel nome, sepolta dal fango delle barene, debba ancora restituire un programma amoroso che è stato taciuto.

What was your first contact with music?

When I was little I sang in a choir and my parents often took me to La Fenice. In 2003, I started studying singing seriously.

How did the project of the Women back from Hollywood come about?

My ex-teacher Anna Contin instilled in me the habit of inviting other musicians attending the concerts to come up on stage. The debut of Women was March 8, 2013, when I invited all of my female friends to perform with me at Vapore. The project then grew to include the six that I felt I had the greatest affinity with. In December our Alessia Pugliatti passed away, but we continue to sing with and for her.

To become established, what is more important, study or talent?

Talent alone is not enough. You need passion, curiosity, intelligence, and a search for authenticity.

Advice for emerging artists?

To be curious, to go deep, to be wary of everyone immediately, to refuse fashion and self-contentedness. Don’t give up when those around you are better, but understand their secrets.

Is Venice music?

Potentially, very much so. Venice is full of good musicians.

However, it’s a city full of contradictions, where those who play often feel like ‘jesters’ indulged by wealthy tourists.

Quando si è avvicinata alla musica?

Da piccola cantavo in coro e i miei genitori mi portavano spesso alla Fenice. Dal 2003 ho iniziato a studiare canto seriamente.

Com’è nato il progetto delle Women back from Hollywood?

La mia ex-insegnante Anna Contin mi ha trasmesso l’abitudine di invitare sul palco gli altri musicisti presenti ai concerti.

L’esordio delle Women è stato l’8 marzo del 2013, quando ho invitato tutte le mie amiche cantanti a esibirsi con me al Vapore. Il progetto si è poi ridimensionato alle sei che sentivo più affini. A dicembre è mancata la nostra Alessia Pugliatti ma continuiamo a cantare con e per lei.

Per affermarsi conta di più lo studio o il talento?

Il solo talento non basta. Servono passione, curiosità, intelligenza e la ricerca dell’autenticità.

Consigli per gli emergenti?

Essere curiosi, approfondire, diffidare del tutto e subito, rifiutare mode e autocompiacimento. Non abbattersi se c’è gente più brava, ma carpirne i segreti.

Venezia è musica?

Potenzialmente moltissimo. Venezia pullula di bravi musicisti. È però una città piena di contraddizioni, in cui chi suona si sente spesso un ‘giullare’ a uso dei turisti abbienti.

Travelling a lot, learning languages and having an open mind.

Do your personal characteristics count if you want to work in the field of cooperation?

You have to avoid drawing hasty conclusions and stay optimistic and active despite the adversities.

What are the soft skills that distinguish this profession?

Empathy, organization, punctuality and above all entrepreneurship.

What is the European situation like?

It’s highly varied. There is excellence in Great Britain, Switzerland and Scandinavia but also in Germany, while the Community institutions are both a great resource and a great challenge.

What is the Italian situation like?

It’s developing quickly, both as an academic discipline and a job opportunity. The future lies in those professional roles that have received an interdisciplinary and international education.

And Venice?

If we think of the role that Venice has played as a crossroads over the centuries, but also of its present reality as a seaport and crossroads of civilization, we have the chance to become the city of the next era. But it will be necessary to seize the opportunity and not rest on our laurels.

Cosa significa lavorare nel mondo delle relazioni internazionali?

Viaggiare molto, imparare le lingue e avere una mente aperta.

Le caratteristiche personali contano se si vuole lavorare nel settore della cooperazione?

Bisogna evitare di giungere a conclusioni affrettate e rimanere sempre ottimisti e fattivi, malgrado le avversità.

Quali sono le soft skill che contraddistinguono questa figura professionale?

Empatia, organizzazione, puntualità e soprattutto intraprendenza.

Come si presenta il contesto europeo? È molto variegato, vi sono eccellenze in Gran Bretagna, Svizzera e Scandinavia ma anche in Germania, mentre le istituzioni comunitarie sono al tempo stesso una grande risorsa e una grande sfida.

Qual è la situazione italiana?

In grande sviluppo, sia come disciplina accademica che come possibilità di lavoro. Il futuro sta proprio in figure professionali che abbiano ricevuto una formazione interdisciplinare ed internazionale.

E Venezia?

Se pensiamo al ruolo di crocevia che Venezia ha ricoperto nei secoli ma anche alla sua realtà attuale di porto di mare e di incroci di civiltà, abbiamo la possibilità di diventare la città della prossima era.

Ma bisogna saper cogliere l’occasione senza adagiarsi.

The Lido Island has been inhabited since ancient times, particularly popular with poets and writers. Considered to be a VIP destination in the twenties, the Lido is still a very elegant and sophisticated place owing to its beautiful but little-known sights. It is also the ideal holiday and recreation area, with its 10 kilometers of sandy coast, which have been awarded the Bandiera Blu (Blue Flag) again in 2017 for the ninth time in a row, and located just steps away from Venice’s magnificent artistic treasures. The Lido is filled with elegant sidewalk cafés, boutiques, luxury hotels situated along the promenade, magnificent Art Nouveau-style villas surrounded by lush gardens and amazing parks, true architectural gems, including Villini Krebster-Beltrami, Monplaisir, Casa del Farmacista and Villa delle Palme. During the Film Festival, the Lido attracts socialites and celebrities from all over the world and this strip of sand, which separates the Venice Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea, becomes the heart of the international film industry.

We had a chat with Paolo Baratta, president of the Venice Biennale, to get updated on all the latest developments at the 74th International Film Festival and beyond. “The Lido’s Cittadella del Cinema - he says - is being completely restored to its original splendor. The project that was started after 2010 - the annus horribilis which marked the lowest and most critical point in the history of the Festival- is nearing completion. The red cube is the symbol of this renaissance, along with the surrounding buildings, which represent the key steps in the Festival’s history: the Terrace of the Excelsior, which hosted the first Film Festivals; Palazzo del Cinema, L’isola del Lido è stata abitata fin da tempi antichissimi, amata da poeti e scrittori. Seppur già considerata il ritrovo del bel mondo dagli anni Venti continua ad essere elegante ed un po’ blasée grazie a luoghi belli, ma sconosciuti alla massa.

Di solito è un angolo tranquillo ed ideale per trascorre le vacanze, standosene sdraiati sul bagnasciuga a due passi dai gioielli artistici della magnifica Venezia, grazie ai suoi 10 chilometri di spiagge e alla sua Bandiera blu 2017 attribuita per la nona volta consecutiva. Ci sono eleganti caffè all’aperto, boutique, lussuosi alberghi che si ergono sul lungo mare, meravigliose ville in stile Liberty circondate da giardini o parchi incantevoli, veri e propri gioielli architettonici tra i quali i villini Krebster-Beltrami, Monplaisir, la Casa del Farmacista e la Villa delle Palme.

Scintillante è invece la mondanità che anima le notti lidensi durante la Mostra del Cinema che trasforma questa sottile striscia di sabbia - che separa la laguna di Venezia dal mar Adriatico - nel fulcro dell’industria cinematografica.

A parlarci delle novità della 74ema edizione della Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica è Paolo Baratta, presidente della Biennale di Venezia. “La cittadella del cinema al Lido - dichiara - va completando la sua rinascita. Sta procedendo con sistematicità il programma avviato dopo l’annus horribilis del 2010, anno che rappresentò il culmine delle fragilità e criticità accumulate nel tempo.

Il cubo rosso è come un sigillo di questa rinascita. E come tale completa i palazzi circostanti che ci ricordano tappe decisive della storia della Mostra: il terrazzo dell’Excelsior fu sede delle prime Mostre, il palazzo del cinema del ‘37 fu la prima sala al mondo concepita per un festival del cinema, la nuovissima sala Darsena corona oggi l’arena all’aperto che a suo tempo fu simbolo dell’apertura

built in 1937, the world’s first screening theatre designed for a film festival; the new Sala Darsena, which completes the open-air cinema that symbolizes the opening up of the Festival to the public; the Casinò, which was definitely taken over by the Festival in 2000 and is now the symbol of the renewed relationship with the international press.

Owing to the commitment of the city of Venice, the large square facing the Casinò and the Sala Grande have been completely renovated this year. And more resources will be made available for the Casinò in the immediate future for further improvement and renovation”. Located near the Cittadella del Cinema, separated only by a stretch of water, is the Lazzaretto Vecchio Island, with its historic buildings, unoccupied for years but partially restored in recent times. “Our commitment to the development of the modern ‘Virtual Reality’ activities - he goes on- is a great opportunity to bring these historic buildings back to life, with the collaboration of Venice’s museum network! It is a courageous decision in many ways, like courageous is the choice to create a section devoted to “Virtual Reality” with its own jury and awards. Once again, a key step in the

al pubblico della Mostra, il Casinò, acquisito definitivamente al festival nel 2000, simboleggia un programmato nuovo rapporto con la stampa mondiale. Grazie all’impegno del Comune di Venezia il piazzale antistante il Casinò e la Sala Grande sono stati quest’anno completamente rinnovati. E al Casinò saranno dedicate altre risorse nell’immediato futuro per ulteriori adeguamenti e rinnovi”. Adiacente alla cittadella del cinema, separata solo da un tratto di acqua, sta dormiente l’isola del Lazzaretto Vecchio con i suoi edifici storici vuoti, anche se da qualche anno parzialmente risanati. “Quale miglior occasione - prosegue - dello sviluppo del nostro impegno nelle modernissime attività della ‘Virtual Reality’ per portar vita nuova a quelle storiche strutture, d’intesa col Polo Museale Veneziano! Si tratta di una decisione per molti aspetti coraggiosa, come coraggiosa è la scelta di realizzare una vera e propria sezione dedicata alla ‘Virtual Reality’ con giurie e premi. Ma ancora una volta un momento significativo della nostra storia avrà il suo luogo simbolo”.

Just steps away from Palazzo del Cinema is the Excelsior. The hotel, built in 1908, soon became popular with famous writers such as Lord Byron and Thomas Mann. Today the hotel, with its sumptuous architecture and lovely position on the beach, goes on treating its guests to the same five-starred elegance and luxury it had over 100 years ago. Guests can relax by the pool or practice various sports, including water sports and sailing, but also golf at the nearby Golf Club. “The opening night of the first Film Festival - says General Manager Alessio Lazazzera - was held in 1932 on the hotel’s terrace with the screening of films that are now considered classics, such as Forbidden by Frank Capra, Grand Hotel by Edmund Goulding and the first Frankenstein film by James Whale. The magnificent Sala Stucchi was used to shoot the famous scene in Once Upon a Time in America. The Hotel Excelsior-Film Festival “marriage”- he goes on - has been strong ever since and every year, in September, our hotel is in the world’s limelight”.

Alessandro Borghi, the rising star of Italian cinema, presides over the opening ceremony of the 74th Venice Film Festival Giovane promessa del cinema italiano, inaugura la 74esima Mostra del cinema di Venezia “Venice? It is cinema to me. As soon as I get off the train at the Santa Lucia station, I smell the scent of cinema. This is the place where you meet those who love cinema, those who make it, those who make this huge dream come true. Here more than in Rome, because Rome lives off many other things. Venice’s Lido gathers the disciples of the cult of cinema”.

Venice has been a revelation for Alessandro Borghi, a young Italian actor who has quickly made a name for himself over the past few years. It was the year 2015, Non essere cattivo by Claudio Caligari was being screened at the Film Festival. The film - a story of suburban gangs, drug dealing, petty crime, shot with amazing realism - received an endless applause. And Alessandro Borghi’s career took off.

We meet with him in Venice, where he is presiding over the Festival’s opening ceremony. After many patronesses, a man is playing this role at last. In 1998, Alessandro Gassman had hosted the opening event, but alongside Livia Azzariti. So this is actually a first for the world’s oldest and most prestigious film festival.

After his performance in Non essere cattivo, Alessandro Borghi has taken great strides along the road of quality filmmaking. He played in Il più grande sogno by Michele Vannucci, the docudrama on the life of his friend Mirko Frezza, in the television series Suburra, in Fortunata by Sergio Castellitto, awarded at Cannes, and in Dalida, a big French production in which he played the role of Luigi Tenco. He was the Italian rising star at the latest Berlin Festival.

We meet on the terrace of the Lido’s Excelsior Hotel. Big blue eyes, a beard, a fit and lean build because of the slimming diet he was on to play Stefano Cucchi. Borghi is sporting a white T-shirt and the serene air of a worldly-wise man.

Alessandro, how do you feel about Venice?

I used to come here as a tourist, two or three days at a time, and I enjoyed getting lost in the calli, taking in all the beauty. Then I attended the Film Fesitval for Non essere cattivo. And I felt the pas-

Qui si incontrano tutti quelli che amano il cinema, quelli che lo fanno, che rendono possibile questo enorme sogno. Qui, più che a Roma, perché Roma vive anche di tante altre cose: al Lido di Venezia si celebra la religione del cinema”.

E Venezia è stata, per Alessandro Borghi, giovane attore italiano emerso prepotentemente negli ultimi anni, il luogo della rivelazione. Era il 2015, alla Mostra del cinema veniva proiettato Non essere cattivo di Claudio Caligari. Il film, una storia di borgate, di droga, di piccola delinquenza, girato con un realismo straordinario, fu salutato da un applauso interminabile. La carriera di Alessandro Borghi prendeva il volo.

Lo incontriamo a Venezia, dove è proprio lui ad aprire ufficialmente la Mostra. Dopo tante madrine, un uomo a interpretare questo ruolo. Solo nel 1998, Alessandro Gassman aveva condotto la serata iniziale, ma in coppia con Livia Azzariti. Quindi, a tutti gli effetti, questa è una prima volta storica, per la manifestazione di cinema più antica e prestigiosa del mondo.

Dopo Non essere cattivo, intanto, Alessandro Borghi ha percorso a passo di corsa le strade del cinema italiano migliore. Ha interpretato Il più grande sogno di Michele Vannucci, docu-drama sulla vita del suo amico Mirko Frezza, la serie televisiva Suburra, Fortunata di Sergio Castellitto, premiato a Cannes, e Dalida, grande produzione francese in cui interpretava Luigi Tenco. Ed è stato la ‘shooting star’ italiana all’ultimo festival di Berlino.

Lo raggiungiamo sulla terrazza dell’hotel Excelsior del Lido.

Grandi occhi azzurri, barba, il fisico asciugato, affilato, per via della dieta a cui si è sottoposto per interpretare Stefano Cucchi. Borghi ha una T shirt bianca, e l’aria tranquilla di uno che ha già molto navigato, nella vita.

Alessandro, qual è il suo rapporto con Venezia?

Ci andavo da turista, due o tre giorni, e adoravo perdermi nelle calli, respirare tutta quella bellezza. Poi sono tornato alla Mostra Venezia | made in Veneto 59

How do you plan to deal with the festival?

Very serenely and with a lot of curiosity. I have to admit it, I would love to meet my lifetime idol, Jim Carrey, the star of a documentary film shot at the time of Man on the Moon. And I would like to meet Javier Bardem, starring in two films shown here at the Festival.

Did you write the inaugural speech yourself?

Yes, I did. It is a very frank speech, very personal, quite unconventional. It reflects my personality.

In your opinion, what is the use of a film festival such as Venice’s at present?

It is essential: the film industry needs people who meet, talk to each other and make plans together. This is the place where ideas are born, where inconceivable films are conceived. This is the place where cinema is born and lives.

You are one of the rising stars of Italian cinema, at a very critical time for the motion-picture industry. How do you see Italian cinema?

I think it is doing well. It should be courageous enough to offer the audience new things. There are a lot of Italian film directors - such as Matteo Rovere, with whom I will be soon working, and Michele Vannucci, with whom I shot Il più grande sogno, Alessio Cremonini for whom I will be playing Cucchi- who represent the Italian cinema’s chance to undergo a change.

What film are you going to shoot with Matteo Rovere?

The title is Il primo re. An ambitious film, inspired by The Revenant and Braveheart. A period film, adventurous, full of duels and battles, entirely shot in archaic Latin. The story of Romulus and Remus and the foundation of Rome.

The film about Stefano Cucchi describes a tragic page of our recent history.

It is a story that could have happened to anyone of us, to a brother, a cousin. A story that we tell from a very human point of view, without taking sides or picking favorites. I will try to play Stefano Cucchi getting as close as possible to the truth of the story.

Who designed the outfits you are going to wear at the opening and closing ceremonies?

I’ve been working with Gucci for some time, I’m fond of them, we are friends, they know me, they provided me with some wonderful outfits that will accompany me on this journey through the Festival.

Come vivrà questi giorni di Festival?

Con molta serenità e molta curiosità. Non lo nego, mi piacerebbe incrociare il mio idolo di sempre, Jim Carrey, protagonista di un documentario girato al tempo di Man on the Moon. E mi piacerebbe incontrare Javier Bardem, protagonista di due film qui alla Mostra.

Il discorso inaugurale lo ha scritto lei?

Sì. È un discorso molto sincero, molto personale, molto poco istituzionale. Mi rispecchia.

Un festival di cinema come quello di Venezia, secondo lei, a che cosa serve, nel momento attuale del cinema? È fondamentale: il cinema ha bisogno di persone che si parlano, che si incontrano, che progettano insieme. Qui nascono le idee, qui si scoprono film impensabili. Qui il cinema nasce e vive.

Lei è uno degli attori italiani emersi negli ultimi anni, in un cinema che vive un momento difficile. Come vede il cinema italiano?

Io lo vedo bene: bisognerebbe avere il coraggio di offrire al pubblico cose nuove. Ci sono tanti registi italiani, come Matteo Rovere con cui lavorerò a breve, come Michele Vannucci con cui ho fatto Il più grande sogno, o Alessio Cremonini con cui interpreterò Cucchi, che sono delle occasioni che il cinema italiano ha per rinnovarsi.

Che film farà con Matteo Rovere?

Si chiamerà Il primo re. Un film ambizioso, con lo spirito di The Revenant o di Braveheart. Un film storico, avventuroso, pieno di duelli e battaglie, che si girerà completamente in protolatino. La storia di Romolo e Remo e della fondazione di Roma.

Il film su Stefano Cucchi racconta una pagina drammatica della nostra storia recente. È una storia che potrebbe essere accaduta ad ognuno di noi, a nostro fratello, nostro cugino. Una storia che affrontiamo da un punto di vista umano, senza creare per forza delle fazioni, degli schieramenti. Cercherò di interpretare Stefano Cucchi restando il più vicino possibile alla verità della storia.

Chi è il suo stilista, quello i cui abiti indosserà nella serata inaugurale e finale?

Io lavoro da tempo con Gucci, a cui sono legato, sono amici e mi conoscono, mi hanno fornito una serie di abiti meravigliosi che mi accompagneranno lungo tutto questo viaggio dentro la Mostra.

Judith Rashleigh, in the second volume of the trilogy, starts an art gallery in Venice and seems to find peace at last.

Rashleigh’s eventful and sometimes shady story is told by British writer Lisa Hilton – a degree in Art History at the New College of Oxford and the author of biographies of major historical characters, in addition to historical novels. A woman with bright blue eyes and fascinatingly cultivated without being boring.

You have studied in Florence and lived in Milan for five years. Do you ever miss the Belpaese?

I miss it so much that next April I will move to Venice with my daughter Ottavia, who just turned 12. Her father and I agree that she should study in her father’s native land as well and, personally speaking, I have always adored the Italians and their lifestyle.

Does being an “Italianata” Brit, like condottiere John Hawkwood, make you ever worry about becoming “the devil incarnate”?

I don’t think so… I would rather describe it as the completion of my life path, which includes Italy and writing among its stages.

What value does writing hold in your life?

I do not have any other talent apart from writing, writing is a privilege to me and the thing I do best. I would not describe myself as an artist in the strict sense of the word, but as someone who enjoys her job and brings joy through it.

What three works of art in Venice move you strongly?

First of all, the works by Bellini showcased at the Accademia, works of surreal beauty… then Pollock’s works at the Guggenheim Museum, which reflect the city’s true spirit, always looking ahead and cosmopolitan. And the third work is a fresco kept in the Church of Angelo Raffaele, representing Tobias and the Angel, a realistic and yet sophisticated painting, which fully conveys the conflict of emotions. Every time I come to Venice, I have to go and see it.

Dalla sua penna (o meglio, dal suo computer!) sono usciti due romanzi che stanno facendo discutere per la loro libertà d’espressione e il coraggio violento con cui si muove la sua eroina nelle pagine di Maestra e Domina, editi in Italia da Longanesi. Judith Rashleigh, nel secondo volume della trilogia, apre una galleria d’arte a Venezia e sembra aver trovata pace.

A raccontare la sua movimentata e qualche volta torbida storia è l’inglese Lisa Hilton - laureata in Storia dell’Arte al New College di Oxford e autrice di importanti biografie di personaggi storici, oltre che di romanzi storici -, una donna dagli occhi di un luminoso azzurro cristallino e una cultura che affascina senza annoiare.

Lei in Italia ha studiato a Firenze e ha vissuto cinque anni a Milano. Le manca mai il Belpaese?

Mi manca così tanto che nell’aprile prossimo traslocherò a Venezia, con mia figlia Ottavia, che ha appena compiuti 12 anni. Il suo papà e io siamo contenti che studi anche nel paese di suo padre e personalmente adoro da sempre gli italiani e il loro modo di vivere.

Essere un’inglese “italianata”, come il condottiero John Hawkwood, non le fa temere di diventare “un diavolo incarnato”?

Direi di no… piuttosto è il completarsi di un percorso esistenziale, che ha l’Italia e la scrittura tra le sue tappe.

Quale valore ha la scrittura nella sua vita?

Non ho altri talenti e scrivere per me è un privilegio e la cosa che so fare meglio. Non mi sento un’artista nel senso stretto del termine, ma una persona che fa un lavoro che le piace e con questo dà gioia .

L’arte è importante nella sua storia, quali sono tre opere a Venezia che più l’emozionano?

Comincerei con i Bellini esposti all’Accademia, di una bellezza surreale… proseguirei con i Pollock del Guggenheim, che riflettono lo spirito vero della città, sempre aperta al futuro e cosmopolita.

E la terza opera è un affresco nella chiesa dell’Angelo Raffaele che rappresenta Tobia e l’angelo, un’opera reale e raffinata a un tempo, capace di rendere appieno il contrasto tra le emozioni. Ogni volta che arrivo in città ho bisogno di andare a vederla.

Venice has been an illusory city, made up of glass and light, in a state of perpetual change, super-sophisticated and yet mysterious.

And what about your character Judith Rashleigh, why her?

Because the art market is very big and wherever a lot of money is involved, corruption appears. Something she knows very well….

Columbia bought the film rights for your Trilogy. Who could play your main character?

It’s up to the production house to decide, but there are two young actresses who, in my opinion, have the right features: the Scottish Joanna Vanderham and the Anglo-French Stacy Martin.

Your novels do not have the classic “happy ending”. Is it a well-pondered choice or is it something that inevitably surfaces in the process?

In Judith Rashleigh’s story, the happy ending is simply impossible, unrealistic. And even in real life a happy ending is not the norm.

War and Peace, Anna Karenina, The Garden of the Finzi Continis, all the great classics (with the exception of Jane Austen’s) do not tell happy stories. After all, as Eliot says in Middlemarch, happiness is made of light and shade.

In Maestra, the artist you refer to is Artemisia Gentileschi, in Domina it is Caravaggio, in Ultima it is going to be Gauguin. Why? The thing that these three artists have in common is violence. That is what made me choose them, each for a different phase of the story and development of the Judith character.

Is Ultima finished yet?

I have already written the ending, because I have always known where I was going with the book… anyway I’m currently working on the book, as I promised to deliver it on September 30.

What attracted your attention at this year’s Biennale?

The Iceland pavilion. Lovely and fascinating. And the elegance of Ettore Sottsass’ works of glass at the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore. A delicate and yet intense emotion.

You have a well-known passion for fashion and a penchant for shoes. How do you plan to walk through Venice’s “calli” on high heels?

Well, I might have to give high heels up… but I made it wonderfully through the Biennale in Lacroix boots. And during an interview with the Sunday Times I wore a pair of 6-cm Marni heels made of glass bubbles… very comfortable! Maybe I don’t have to give heels up after all…

One last question. As an art historian, what is your favorite color?

Blue, of course… Turquoise, like the Lagoon.

Perché ha scelto proprio Venezia come luogo d’elezione? È da sempre una città d’illusione, fatta di vetro e luce, che rivela realtà in perenne mutamento, supersofisticata e oscura a un tempo.

E il personaggio di Judith Rashleigh, perché l’ha scelta?

Perché esiste un importante mercato dell’arte e dove circola molto denaro può esserci anche la corruzione. Una realtà a lei nota...

I diritti per la sua Trilogia sono stati acquistati da tempo dalla Columbia. Chi potrebbe essere il volto della sua eroina?

La scelta sarà della casa di produzione, ma in questo momento ci sono due giovani attrici che a mio parere hanno l’espressione giusta: la scozzese Joanna Vanderham e l’anglo-francese Stacy Martin.

Sembra che i suoi romanzi neghino il classico ‘lieto fine’. È una scelta razionale o succede quasi inevitabilmente?

Nella storia di Judith Rashleigh il lieto fine non è proprio possibile, non è realistico. E anche nella vita il lieto fine non è la normalità.

E se pensiamo a Guerra e pace, ad Anna Karenina, a Il giardino dei Finzi Contini, i capolavori (con l’eccezione di quelli di Jane Austen!) non raccontano storie felici. Probabilmente è vero quanto si legge in Middlemarch di Eliot: la felicità è fatta di luci e di ombre.

In Maestra l’artista di riferimento era Artemisia Gentileschi, in Domina è stato Caravaggio, in Ultima sarà Gauguin. Perché?

Sono tre artisti accomunati dalla violenza. Ed è questa che mi ha portata a sceglierli, ciascuno per una fase diversa della narrazione e dello sviluppo del personaggio di Judith.

Ultima è già concluso?

Il finale è già scritto, perché ho sempre saputo dove volevo andare con questa mio lavoro… comunque ci sto lavorando in questi giorni, perché ho promesso di consegnarlo il 30 settembre.

A proposito di arte, cosa l’ha colpita alla Biennale di quest’anno?

Il divertente padiglione dell’Islanda! Delizioso e affascinante. E a San Giorgio Maggiore, alla Fondazione Giorgio Cini, la raffinatezza dei vetri di Ettore Sottsass. Un’emozione lieve e intensa insieme.

Tra le sue passioni dichiarate c’è la moda e non ha mai nascosto il suo penchant per le scarpe. Come potrà affrontare le calli di Venezia sui tacchi?

Forse è vero, dovrò rinunciare ai tacchi… ma intanto la Biennale l’ho percorsa con ai piedi stivali di Lacroix, ed è andato tutto per il meglio. E per un servizio del Sunday Times ho indossato un paio di scarpe di Marni con 6 centimetri di tacchi fatti di bolle di vetro… comodissime! Forse non dovrò rinunciare ai tacchi, in fondo…

L’ultima domanda. Da studiosa d’arte e di storia, qual è il suo colore preferito?

Il blu, naturalmente… Turquoise, come la Laguna.

Films worth seeing or reseeing, awarded at the Venice Film Festival over the past 35 years I film da vedere o rivedere, premiati alla Mostra d’arte cinematografica di Venezia negli ultimi 35 anni The three of us rode the elevator of Venice’s Excelsior Hotel together: Peter Mullan, the Golden Lion and myself. Peter Mullan, the Scottish actor and film director, had just won the Golden Lion for Magdalene, a beautiful film about the forcible removal of Irish children from their unwed mothers. He said: “Do you want to hold it for a while?” “Well yes, of course”. So, as we walked out of the elevator, the Lion was in my hands for some time. It was the year 2002.

The Golden Lion is not just any award. That small metal sculpture is even more important than the Oscar. The Lion is the highest prize given at the Venice Film Festival. It is awarded for a film’s artistic value. For the films that are meant to go down in the history of cinema, not in the history of box-office hits.

And so, not all films awarded in Venice get to be blockbusters.

But that’s the way it is: even Van Gogh sold very few paintings during his lifetime. For intelligent and passionate moviegoers, who enjoy being mentally and emotionally touched by a movie, here are some Golden Lion-awarded films of the near or more remote past that we strongly recommend. First of all, The State of Things by Wim Wenders, the black-and-white film almost entirely shot at a hotel in Sintra, Portugal, but it feels like being on the moon. It was awarded the Golden Lion in 1982 and its director, Wim Wenders, has been looked up to as a benchmark by film buffs all over the world since then. In 1986, the Golden Lion went to a delicate and subtle film, whose dialogues flow like water from the spring: The Green Ray by Eric Rohmer, a virtuoso of naturalness, of the truth of the instant of life captured by the camera. In 1993, another masterwork of filmmaking, Short Cuts by Robert Altman, made from short, intertwined love stories, twists of fame, moments of ordinary madness by Raymond Carver, who was perhaps the best in describing America with brevity, in an ascetic style.

1993 was also the year of another beautiful film: Three Colours: 82 Venezia | made in Veneto

In un ascensore dell’hotel Excelsior di Venezia ci trovammo in tre: Peter Mullan, io e il Leone d’oro. Peter Mullan, attore e regista scozzese, lo aveva appena vinto con Magdalene, un film bellissimo sulle ragazze madri irlandesi, a cui i figli illegittimi venivano strappati via. Peter Mullan mi guardò, vide che guardavo il Leone. Mi disse: “Lo vuoi tenere?” (“Do you want to hold it for a while?”) “Sì, certo che lo voglio”. Così, usciti dall’ascensore, il Leone è stato fra le mie mani, per un po’. Era il 2002.

Perché il Leone d’oro non è un premio qualunque. Quella piccola scultura di metallo è persino più importante dell’Oscar. Il Leone è il premio della Mostra d’arte cinematografica di Venezia.

E in quella parola, “arte”, sta tutta la differenza. Il Leone premia i film per il loro valore artistico. Per quello che possono dare alla storia dell’arte cinematografica, non tanto alla storia del box office.

I film premiati a Venezia, così, a volte non sono degli enormi successi commerciali. Ma è giusto così: anche Van Gogh, in vita, vendette pochissimi quadri.

Per lo spettatore appassionato, intelligente, che vuole provare grandi emozioni con un film, può essere bello riscoprire, oggi, alcuni Leoni d’oro del passato recente o anche un po’ più lontano. Se non lo avete visto, andate a cercare il bianco e nero che raggela gli istanti ne Lo stato delle cose di Wim Wenders, un film sull’attesa, girato quasi tutto in un albergo di Sintra, in Portogallo, ma sembra di essere sulla Luna. Vinse il Leone d’oro nel 1982, e il suo autore, Wim Wenders, da allora non ha smesso di essere un punto di riferimento per gli appassionati di cinema di tutto il mondo.

Nel 1986 vinse un film dalla grazia delicata, in cui i dialoghi sgorgavano come l’acqua di un ruscello: è Il raggio verde di Eric Rohmer, un maestro della naturalezza, della verità dell’istante captata dal cinema. ‘A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence’ by Roy Andersson (2014) that, without the accent mark it has in Italian. A brutal, uncompromising drama, the story of a small but ruthless gangster and his mother, involved in a relationship which we are not going to tell you about, but in which feelings and emotions grow deeper and stronger scene by scene. One of the most beautiful and cruelest films of the decade.

In the past few years, we have seen an Italian film director win the Venice Film Festival’s top prize: Gianfranco Rosi for the documentary film Sacro GRA. The GRA is the huge ring road around Rome, along which Rosi’s camera captured faces and stories. Rigorous filmmaking, a bit detached, as if he were describing some marine species rather than human beings. But definitely a piece of very original and personal filmmaking. It was the year 2013.

While critics joked about the title of Roy Andersson’s film, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, he was awarded the Golden Lion in 2014. A strange, disconcerting film, a succession of fixed tableaux, with surreal characters and surreal images: a man dies of a heart attack trying to uncork a bottle of wine while his wife is distracted in the kitchen and goes on singing, two desolate figures trying to sell even more desolate joke-shop items. Reflections on the oddness of life, on how life- and cinema- can give us everything and its opposite at the same time.

And so, that Golden Lion which, thanks to Peter Mullan, I had the privilege of touching and holding in my hands, has an enormous value. It tells us that the motion-picture world is not only about special effects, CGI, superheroes, cinematic universes, actors playing in front of green backgrounds. It tells us that cinema teaches us something about life, our life. And helps us look at it with new eyes.

Ki-duk emergeva prepotente vincendo il Leone con Pieta, scritto così, senza l’accento che ha in italiano. Un film crudo, che non risparmia niente allo spettatore, che raccontava di un piccolo gangster spietato e di sua madre, in un rapporto di cui non riveliamo nulla, ma in cui i sentimenti, e le emozioni, si facevano fortissimi, un’inquadratura dopo l’altra. Uno dei film più belli e crudeli del decennio.

Negli ultimi anni, un italiano è tornato a vincere la Mostra di Venezia. È Gianfranco Rosi con il documentario Sacro GRA. Il GRA è il Grande raccordo anulare che circonda Roma: una strada lungo la quale Rosi ha raccolto facce e storie. Cinema rigoroso, un po’ freddo, il suo. Come se facesse un documentario sulle specie marine, non sugli umani. Ma cinema assolutamente originale e personale. Era il 2013.

I critici scherzavano, infine, sul titolo del film di Roy Andersson: Un piccione seduto su un ramo riflette sull’esistenza. E invece, nel 2014, il film vinse il Leone d’oro. Cinema sconcertante, con lunghissime inquadrature fisse, con personaggi surreali e immagini altrettanto surreali: un uomo che muore d’infarto cercando di stappare una bottiglia di vino mentre la moglie in cucina non si accorge di niente e continua a cantare, due personaggi tristissimi che vendono giochi ancora più tristi. Riflessioni sulla bizzarria dell’esistenza, su come la vita - e il cinema - possano darci tutto, e il contrario di tutto.

Così, quel Leone d’oro che una volta, grazie a Peter Mullan, ho toccato e tenuto fra le mani, ha un grande valore. Ci dice che il cinema non è solo effetti speciali, Cgi, supereroi, cinematic universes, attori che recitano davanti a sfondi verdi. Ci dice che il cinema serve a capire meglio la vita che viviamo, la nostra vita.

E a guardarla con occhi diversi.

The center and symbol of the Republic’s political life, Palazzo Ducale (the Palace of the Doge) houses grand works of art dating from various periods, commissioned by individual doges who wished to be remembered. Paolo Caliari, better known as Il Veronese (1528–88), was a prolific and broadly acclaimed artist, forefather of a family which came to represent Italian art in its own times. A painter with a special talent for capturing the light of Venice in his colors. A crisp, bright light which made each work rich and elegant. He was only 13 when he began his apprenticeship in Verona with the painter Antonio Badile.

Ten years later, in 1551, the Venetian nobility already knew his name.

His first important commission came from the Signoria of Venice, for whom he decorated, along with the artists Ponchino and Zelotti, the Sale del Consiglio dei Dieci of the Palazzo Ducale. His most significant works can be seen in the Sala delle Udienze: in the center, Jupiter Expelling the Vices (a copy of the original now at the Louvre), Juno Showering Gifts on Venetia and the oval painting, Youth and Old Age. A rectangular canvas depicting Justice Breaks the Chains and a few monochrome works (such as the allegories Cyprus and Candia) have recently been attributed to Veronese.

Displayed inside the Sala della Bussola is the large painting, Saint Mark Crowning the Theological Virtues (another copy of an original housed in the Louvre since 1797). He also painted monochrome allegories and scenes from Roman history for other chambers. The paintings displayed inside the third hall of this wing, the Sala dei Tre Capi del Consiglio dei Dieci, include The Triumph of Virtue over Evil and Nemesis Triumph. The spectacular coffered ceiling of the monumental Sala del Consiglio is composed of lavish gilded frames and features the artist’s works: Mars and Neptune, Venice Ruling with Justice and Peace and Faith and Religion. Four L-shaped paintings adorn the corners of the ceiling and depict allegories of Reward, Prosperity, Fidelity and Moderation. Visible in the central panels are Purity, Gentleness, Vigilance and Industry (for others, this last allegory represents Dialectics). At the far end of the hall he painted the complex Allegory of the Battle of Lepanto, as well as Saint Sebastian and Saint Giustina. The

Palazzo Ducale, cuore e simbolo della Repubblica e del suo sistema di governo e di potere, è custode di imponenti opere d’arte, risalenti a varie epoche storiche, commissionate dai singoli Dogi che volevano, tra l’altro, tramandare ai posteri la propria memoria. Artista prolifico, di grandezza internazionale, capostipite di una famiglia che ha saputo rappresentare l’arte italiana del suo tempo è Paolo Caliari, meglio noto come il Veronese (1528-1588). Pittore, che più di altri, è riuscito ad imprigionare la luce veneziana nei suoi colori; una luce tersa, abbagliante e che ha reso ogni opera ricca ed elegante. Appena tredicenne entra a Verona nella bottega del pittore Antonio Badile e dieci anni dopo, nel 1551, risulta già in contatto con il patriziato veneziano. A Venezia, la prima grande commissione gli viene dalla Signoria, per la quale decora, assieme al Ponchino e allo Zelotti, le sale del Consiglio dei Dieci a Palazzo Ducale. Nella Sala delle Udienze realizza le scene di maggior rilievo: quella centrale con Giove che fulmina i vizi (oggi al Louvre e sostituita da una copia ottocentesca), Giunone versa doni su Venezia e l’ovale con Gioventù e Vecchiaia. Di recente gli è stata attribuita anche la tela rettangolare con la Giustizia che spezza i ceppi e alcuni dei monocromi (come le allegorie di Cipro e di Candia). Presso la Sala della Bussola si trova la grande tela con San Marco che incorona le Virtù teologali (anche questa al Louvre dal 1797, sostituita da una copia), negli altri scomparti, a monocromo, realizza figure allegoriche e scene di storia romana. Nella terza delle tre sale di questa zona del palazzo, la Sala dei Tre Capi del Consiglio dei Dieci, si trovano anche le tele con il Trionfo della Virtù sul Male e il Trionfo della Nemesi sul Male. Il soffitto della Sala del Collegio presenta le sue opere Marte e Nettuno e, Venezia dominatrice con la Giustizia e la Pace, la Fede e la Religione.

Agli angoli del soffitto, quattro tele a L con la Ricompensa, la Prosperità, la Fedeltà, la Moderazione; negli spazi mediani la Purezza, la Mansuetudine, la Vigilanza, l’Industria (per altri si tratta della Dialettica). Sulla parte di fondo del Collegio ha dipinto la complessa Allegoria della battaglia di Lepanto, oltre i santi Sebastiano e Giustina. Paolo Veronese, Ratto di Europa, Sala dell’Anticollegio protagonists of the victorious battle of Lepanto, Sebastiano Venier, later Doge, and Agostino Barbarigo, are shown adoring Christ imperator mundi in Venice with the saints Mark and Giustina and Faith in a triumph of martyrs and saints. The battle is actually an excuse for a new, important celebration of Venice’s military successes. During the same period Veronese frescoed the central octagon in the ceiling of the annexed Sala dell’Anticollegio with Venice distributing honors and rewards, a sort of political declaration to reconfirm the controversial right of the Republic to appoint its bishops. Truly impressive is the magnificent painting bequeathed to the Serenissima by the nobleman Vertucci Contarini, The Rape of Europa. The color quality, slow-paced narration and elegant figures of this work were used as a model by the two artists who most contributed to the revival of Veronese’s manner during the early 18th century: Sebastiano Ricci and Giambattista Tiepolo. Veronese’s last major endeavor at Palazzo Ducale coincided with the vast project, carried out between 1579 and 1582, to redecorate the immense assembly halls, the Maggior Consiglio and the Scrutinio, following the disastrous fire in 1577. He realized the enormous oval painting, Triumph of Venice (Pax Veneta), which represents the apotheosis of the city, crowned by angels and surrounded by virtues. The lower part shows the city’s diverse social classes. The Triumph of Venice celebrates the city as a power whose order and prosperity is based on peace and justice; one which supports the arts, protects the weak and is Christian and merciful. Veronese depicts the Venice of those times, the same city essayists, ambassadors, poets and philosophers wrote about. He shows us a personification of the myth of Venice and a dominating and seductive period. The works displayed at Palazzo Ducale allow visitors to become familiar with the many facets of this artist, his keen awareness of the architectural environment of his times and the religious spirit of the Counter-reformation.

La battaglia è in realtà un pretesto per una nuova e importante celebrazione delle glorie militari di Venezia. Contemporaneamente al soffitto del Collegio, Veronese dipinge ad affresco l’ottagono il soffitto della contigua Sala dell’Anticollegio con Venezia che distribuisce ricompense e onori, una sorta di dichiarazione politica a riaffermare il contestato diritto alla nomina dei vescovi da parte del governo della Repubblica. Di notevole impatto è lo splendido dipinto donato alla Serenissima per lascito testamentario del nobiluomo Vertucci Contarini. Si tratta de Il ratto di Europa, opera che costituisce uno dei modelli veronesiani più apprezzati, per la qualità del colore, oltre che la pacatezza della narrazione e l’eleganza della figurazione, da quegli artisti che già agli esordi del Settecento sono stati i protagonisti del revival veronesiano: Sebastiano Ricci e Giambattista Tiepolo.

L’ultimo grande impegno a Palazzo Ducale coincide con la realizzazione, tra il 1579 e 1582, del ciclopico programma di ridecorazione delle grandi sale assembleari: Maggior Consiglio e Scrutinio, dopo il disastroso incendio del 1577. Suo è l’immenso ovale con il Trionfo di Venezia (Pax Veneta) che raffigura l’apoteosi della città, incoronata dagli angeli e circondata dalle virtù, mentre più sotto sono rappresentate le diverse classi della società veneziana. Il Trionfo di Venezia celebra Venezia come forza apportatrice di pace e di giustizia, fondamento di ordine e di prosperità, protettrice delle arti e mecenate, di tutela dei deboli, pietosa e cristiana. Il Veronese ritrae una Venezia del suo tempo, raccontata anche da trattatisti, ambasciatori, poeti e filosofi, ci presenta una incarnazione del mito di Venezia, un tempo dominante e seducente. Nelle opere presenti a Palazzo Ducale il visitatore ha la possibilità di conoscere un artista in tutte le sue sfaccettature e consapevole del mondo dell’architettura a lui contemporanea, attento alla religiosità degli anni della Controriforma.

From the Biennale inside the city, a range of must-attend events Dalla Biennale dentro la città, carnet degli imperdibili

The value of art in civil progress: this lesson of Viva Arte Viva, the 2017 Biennale (until November 26, 2017, labiennale.org) is an energy that renews and regenerates, a movement in continuous evolution that shines upon Venice. The international Exhibition unfolds across the Giardini and the Arsenale, with an extensive display that divides the works into 9 sections, small exhibitions within the exhibition that cover various themes which connect only at the end, in a unique and magnificent mosaic. Alongside the exhibition are the National Pavilions and the Italian Pavilion curated by the exceptional Cecilia Alemani, which narrates Il Mondo Magico (The Magical World) through projects by Roberto Cuoghi, Adelita Husni-Bey and Giorgio Andreotta Calò. Fuori Biennale and the major exhibitions in the city don’t disappoint. In fact, they seem to have understood and put into practice the very lesson of the International Exhibition.

It all begins with the large-scale hands holding up Ca’ Sagredo: a powerful reflection that Lorenzo Quinn (sculptor and actor like his father Anthony) calls on us to make about the hot-button issue of global warming and on the protection of Serenissima’s world heritage. The Golden Tower, a 20-meter high obelisk covered in 35,500 24-karat gold leaves by James Lee Byars, in Campo San Vio, is a must-see, on display until November 26; and a reflection on man and the increasingly complex present can be found in Michelangelo Pistoletto’s installation One and One makes Three in the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore. In this sacred and ancient place, a circle of mirrors force visitors to look inside themselves and leads the spectator to undergo a profound and silent reflection. The Museo Correr hosts a large “tapestry of human faces” by Shirin Neshat: 55 powerful portraits of men and women that reconstruct a strong geography of emotions. Jan Fabre is at the Abbey of San Giorgio with Glass and Bone Sculptures (1977-2017): 40 works in glass and bone by the Antwerpian artist, conceived of as a way to confront the dilemma of metamorphosis and the universal combination of life and death. The most spectacular exhibition in Venice in 2017, however, features Damien Hirst: Treasure from The Wreck of The Unbelievable

Il valore dell’arte nel progresso civile: la lezione di Viva Arte Viva, la Biennale Arte 2017 (fino al 26 novembre 2017, labiennale.org) è energia che rinnova e rigenera, movimento in continua evoluzione che irradia Venezia. La mostra internazionale si snoda tra i Giardini e l’Arsenale, con un allestimento ampio in cui le opere sono divise in 9 sezioni, piccole mostre nella mostra che affrontano temi diversi che si ricompongono solo alla fine in un mosaico unico e grandioso.

Accanto alla mostra internazionale i Padiglioni Internazionali e il Padiglione Italia curato da una bravissima Cecilia Alemani che racconta Il mondo magico attraverso Roberto Cuoghi, Adelita HusniBey e Giorgio Andreotta Calò. Il fuori Biennale e le grandi mostre della città non deludono. Sembrano anzi aver raccolto e messo in pratica la lezione della Mostra Internazionale. Si comincia dalle grandi mani che sostengono Ca’ Sagredo: una riflessione potente che Lorenzo Quinn (scultore e già attore come il padre Anthony) chiama a fare sulla dibattuta questione del riscaldamento globale e sulla difesa di un patrimonio mondiale attraverso la Serenissima.

Da non perdere fino al 26 novembre la Golden Tower di James Lee Byars in Campo San Vio, un obelisco di venti metri rivestito di 35.500 foglie d’oro 24 carati; e la riflessione sull’uomo e sul suo presente sempre più complesso è quella cui invita l’installazione di Michelangelo Pistoletto One and One makes Three nell’Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore. In questo luogo sacro un cerchio di specchi costringono a guardarsi dentro e inducono lo spettatore a una riflessione profonda e silenziosa. Il Museo Correr ospita il grande “arazzo di volti umani” di Shirin Neshat: 55 intensi ritratti di uomini e donne che ricostruiscono una intensa geografia delle emozioni. Jan Fabre è all’Abbazia di San Gregorio con Glass and bone sculptures (1977-2017): 40 opere in vetro e ossa dell’artista d’Anversa, pensate per affrontare il dilemma della metamorfosi e dell’universale binomio vita-morte. Intuirion, One and One Makes Three, Glass and bone sculptures (1977-2017) (ph. Angelos bvba) (until December 3), hosted in two spaces of the Pinault Collection, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana: a massive operation showcasing figures of every size, material and colour and statues encrusted with unimaginable corals and rare jewels coming from a fantastical and dreamlike discovery. Intuition is at the center of Palazzo Fortuny, which brings together artifacts of the past and ancient works, as well as modern and contemporary pieces. In the rooms of Intuition, visitors encounter, until November 27, Neolithic menhir and works

by Kandinskij, as well as automatic writing texts and installations by Marina Abramovic, uninterrupted, just like the intuitions of art over the centuries. Fondazione Prada presents - also until November 26 - The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied, a multimedia exhibition that resulted from a fruitful collaboration between the writer and director Alexander Kluge, the artist Thomas Demand, the scenographer and costume designer Anna Viebrock and the curator Udo Kittelmann.

Until November 30, the Galleria d’arte Contini is hosting the solo show of Manolo Valdès, an eclectic and versatile artist and one of the most important maestri of the 21st century. There’s still a few more days (until October 22) to enjoy an extraordinary and irreverent exhibition of one of the great masters of Pop Art: Ca’ Pesaro in Venice is hosting 82 Portraits and 1 Still-Life, with works executed over three years, between 2013 and 2016, using a single parameter: portray, sitting down, a large variety of people. The same seat and the same neutral background, just like Bronzino, but with each subject having the freedom to choose their pose. Famous faces, like those of John Baldesseri and Lord Jacob Rothschild, can be found among the faces of the artist’s family members or neighbours. Also Pop Art but this time in Mestre at the Centro Culturale Candiani is Attorno alla Pop Art nella Sonnabend Collection (until November 5). Until January 7, 2018, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents, in the exhibition spaces of the Project Rooms, the exhibition-dossier PICASSO. On the Beach, curated by Luca Massimo Barbero. With a unique and elegant collection of works, including three paintings, ten drawings executed by Pablo Picasso between February and December 1937 and one sculpture, displayed together for the first time, Barbero seeks to cast a new light on the Spanish artist’s work, highlighting his connections with the Mediterranean, which had such an important impact on his artistic career: from his roots in Spain to his life in France to his relations with artists and art forms that recalled the Mediterranean. Born out of the collaboration with the Musée Picasso in Paris, the exhibition, collected and focused, unfolds around one of Peggy Guggenheim’s most beloved paintings, Picasso’s On the Beach (La Baignade), today housed in the Venetian museum.

Una gigantesca operazione economica che si declina in figure di ogni dimensione, materiale e colore, statue incrostate di coralli inimmaginabili e gioielli rari provenienti da un immaginifico e irreale ritrovamento. L’intuizione è al centro a Palazzo Fortuny, che raccoglie artefatti del passato e opere antiche, ma anche moderne e contemporane. Nelle sale di Intuition, dunque, s’incontrano fino al 27 novembre menhir del Neolitico e opere di Kandinskij, testi di scrittura automatica e installazioni di Marina Abramovic, senza soluzioni di continuità proprio come le intuizioni d’arte nei secoli. Fondazione Prada presenta - sempre fino al 26 novembre - The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied, esposizione transmediale, frutto della felice collaborazione tra lo scrittore e regista Alexander Kluge, l’artista Thomas Demand, la scenografa e costumista Anna Viebrock e il curatore Udo Kittelmann. Fino al 30 novembre la Galleria d’arte Contini ospita invece la personale di Manolo Valdès, artista eclettico e poliedrico, uno dei maestri più significativi del XXI secolo. Volti celebri come quelli di John Baldesseri, o Lord Jacob Rothschild si alternano ai ritratti di familiari o persone del vicinato, conoscenti. Ancora Pop Art ma questa volta a Mestre al Centro Culturale Candiani, Attorno alla Pop Art nella Sonnabend Collection (fino al 5 novembre). Fino al 7 gennaio 2018, la Collezione Peggy Guggenheim presenta, negli spazi espositivi delle Project Rooms, la mostra-dossier Picasso.

Sulla spiaggia, a cura di Luca Massimo Barbero. Attraverso una selezione unica e raffinatissima di opere, tre dipinti, dieci disegni realizzati da Pablo Picasso tra febbraio e dicembre del 1937 e una scultura, esposte insieme per la prima volta in occasione della mostra, Barbero cerca di gettare nuova luce sul lavoro dell’artista spagnolo, evidenziando i suoi collegamenti con quel Mediterraneo che ha avuto un ruolo così importante nella sua carriera artistica: dalle radici in Spagna, alla vita in Francia, alle relazioni con artisti e forme d’arte che avevano nel Mediterraneo un punto di riferimento. Nata dalla collaborazione con il Musée national Picasso-Paris, la mostra, raccolta e mirata, si snoda attorno a una delle tele più amate da Peggy Guggenheim, il dipinto picassiano Sulla spiaggia (La Baignade), appartenente oggi al museo veneziano.

The exhibition ‘Lyda Borelli. A Leading Lady of the 20th Century’, until 15 November at Palazzo Cini La mostra ‘Lyda Borelli. Primadonna del Novecento’, fino al 15 novembre a Palazzo Cini It was as if the artistic career of Lyda Borelli - an ultra-famous actress of the early 20th century, born in 1884 - had never existed. After twenty years of astounding, worldwide success on stage and in cinema, the actress retired to become Mrs. Lyda Cini, the dearly-beloved wife of Vittorio Cini, who made sure all traces of his famous wife’s career were erased. Lyda Borelli ‘disavowed’ the world of show-business to devote the rest of her life to a new role, that of the happy wife of one of the richest and most famous men in Italy, Count Cini, and loving mother of their four children.

Palazzo Cini in Venice, in the district of San Vio, where the former star lived until she died in Rome on 1959, hosts an exceptional exhibition: Lyda Borelli - A Leading Lady of the 20th Century (open until 15 November), which tells the story of this great actress for the first time.

Curator of the show is Maria Ida Biggi, director of the Fondazione Cini Institute of Theatre and Opera. The book Il Teatro di Lyda Borelli, by Maria Ida Biggi (published by Fratelli Alinari), complements the exhibition, which also features contributions

by M. Dolores Cassano and Marianna Zanotti: paintings, dresses (reproduced at the Nicolao atelier in Venice), photographs, films and documents illustrate the erased years of the actress’ career as well as her declining world. Lyda Borelli was also known for her unique measured gestures: the term ‘borellismo’ can be found in the Panzini Italian dictionary.

Petrolini’s famous parody, Ma l’amor mio non muore, is unforgettable in this context. He dedicated it to the film that turned Lyda Borelli into the greatest star of the silent film industry: “…Tutto muore quaggiù! Muore l’insetto, muore il cane, il cavallo ed il cammello, muore il rospo, la pecora, il capretto, muore la pianta, la radice, il fiore: ma l’amor mio… ma l’amor mio non muore!” (Everything is dying down here! Insect, dog, horse, camel, toad, sheep, goat, plant, root and flower. But my love, my love does not die!)

Di Lyda Borelli - nata nel 1884 - artista famosissima dei primi decenni del Novecento, nessuno trovava più traccia: dopo vent’anni di successi clamorosi in tutto il mondo come attrice di teatro e diva del cinema muto, l’attrice scomparve dalle scene per diventare la signora Lyda Cini, moglie amatissima di Vittorio Cini che con le nozze si preoccupò di far scomparire qualsiasi traccia che parlasse del passato artistico della famosa moglie. Lyda Borelli ‘rinnegò’ il mondo dello spettacolo, per dedicarsi a un nuovo personaggio che interpretò per il resto della sua vita: moglie innamorata di uno degli uomini più ricchi e famosi d’Italia, il conte Cini, e madre tenerissima dei loro quattro figli. A Palazzo Cini di Venezia, a San Vio, dove l’ex diva abitò fino alla morte, sopraggiunta a Roma nel 1959, è stata allestita una mostra eccezionale Lyda Borelli - Primadonna del Novecento (aperta al pubblico fino al 15 novembre) che per la prima volta racconta la vita dimenticata della grande attrice.

La mostra, realizzata dall’Istituto del Teatro e del Melodramma della Fondazione G. Cini, diretto da Maria Ida Biggi (curatore della Mostra) è accompagnata dal libro Il teatro di Lyda Borelli, di Maria Ida Biggi (ed. F.lli Alinari) con interventi di M. Dolores Cassano e Marianna Zanotti, che tra dipinti, abiti (ricostruiti dall’atelier Nicolao di Venezia), fotografie, film e documenti racconta gli anni d’arte cancellati dell’attrice, il suo mondo decadente interpretato con quella particolare gestualità cadenzata che divenne fatto di costume, di moda: ‘borellismo’ è la parola citata dal Panzini nel suo dizionario della lingua italiana.

Francesco and Sant’Elena: the Franciscans of San Michele in Isola, the Discalced Carmelites near Santa Lucia railway station and in Cannaregio, and the Poor Clares on Giudecca. During our search we met Vio Gastone and his wife Dariella, owners at Sant’Erasmo of the oldest Dorona vines and producers of a great salso wine, with whom we’ve never stopped collaborating, while enjoying their generous hospitality. We joined forces with all these producers to promote the 2008-2009 events during the Bragora festivities, sponsored by Parco della Laguna and Slow Food”. Gianluca Bisol, discendente di una storica famiglia di viticoltori di Valdobbiadene, sull’isola di Mazzorbo ha fatto rivivere l’antichissima Dorona. Arrivato a Torcello per visitare la Cattedrale, vede per la prima volta alcune piante di Dorona, la storica uva d’oro di Venezia. Da qui partono le ricerche che portano a ritrovare un totale di 80 piante sparse tra orti e giardini delle isole della laguna.

The Ruby Cocktail is made with Absolut Elyx Vodka, chinotto liqueur, fresh lemon juice, cranberry juice, raspberry juice, red beetroot juice, thyme, lime and marjoram.

Beginning in September, visitors have one more reason to see Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, the great one-man exhibition by the “bad boy” of contemporary art, Damien Hirst.

Inaugurated in April and continuing until December 3, 2017, the exhibition brings together for the first time the spaces of Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana dedicated to the Pinault Collection in Venice.

Visitors indeed have the opportunity to experience an Unbelievable Lunch at the restaurant of the Palazzina, the five-star boutique hotel designed by Philippe Starck, a short walk from Palazzo Grassi. The restaurant has created a special menu for this unique occasion, which it is offering at a special price for those attending the exhibition.

The exhibition is based on the story of a vessel which sank in the Indian Ocean two thousand years ago and which was salvaged by a team of archeologists led by Hirst. The artist narrates this “unbelievable” tale through 189 works actually created by him and his collaborators during more than a decade of work. On display is a surprising mix of ancient and contemporary materials, such as the combination of bronze and gold with steel and LEDs, or the juxtaposition of different iconographic figures, from busts of Egyptian, Greek and Hindu divinities to statues of Mickey

And it is indeed the colors and “marine” quality of these works that provided the inspiration for Fabio Manni, chef at the Palazzina restaurant: Manni has created a four-course dining experience that aims to stimulate all the senses, with dishes that will delight the eyes, in addition to the palate and nose. It’s a menu of true masterpieces of the culinary art based on ingredients from the sea and with names that recall their maritime connection. The meal takes diners on a voyage of discovery through the tastes of Venice and its surroundings. The menu consists of tempura of langoustines and sea kelp presented in a sand and coral arrangement; a “palette” of fish from the sea and the lagoon with brightly colored bread corals; gnocchetti with spider crab and its coral served in its shell, and, to finish, a “bed” of chocolate and mascarpone cream: the special menu at Palazzina will transport you to a magical universe.
