What about your profession holds the greatest fascination?

“I am passionate about describing the marvels of the city’s monuments, once material witnesses to a love for this city, a living image of genius loci without parallel”.

Which itinerary would you recommend to tourists?

“There are three things that cannot be missed in Venice: Piazza San Marco, political heart of the ancient Republic, the Byzantine Basilica, and the Ducal Palace.

The Rialto Bridge and Market, an ancient economic and financial centre of the Republic. And lastly the Accademia Gallery, temple of great Venetian painting”.

Which itinerary do you suggest?

“A visit to the more shy places in Venice, the two great basilicas of the mendicant orders, the Dominican Basilica of Saints John and Paul and the Franciscan Frari Basilica, the ornate and splendid tombs of the Doges, Venice’s most powerful men, who were buried in the churches of the poorest as retaliation”.

A line about what Venice means to you?

“Charming and enchanting, despite the millions of tourists who flood the city yearly.”

Cosa la affascina maggiormente della sua professione?

Mi appassiona descrivere la meraviglia dei suoi monumenti, a loro volta testimonianza materiale di un percorso d’ amore verso questa città, vivente immagine di un genius loci senza paragoni.

Quale itinerario consiglierebbe ad un turista?

Ci sono tre cose da non perdere per dire di aver visto, e un po’ conosciuto Venezia: la Piazza San Marco cuore politico dell’antica Repubblica, la Basilica bizantina ed il Palazzo Ducale. Il Ponte ed il Mercato di Rialto, antica area economica e city finanziaria della Repubblica. Ed infine le Gallerie dell’Accademia , tempio della grande pittura veneziana.

Quali itinerario consiglia?

Una visita ai luoghi più introversi di Venezia, alle due grandi basiliche degli ordini mendicanti, Domenicani di San Giovanni e Paolo e Francescani dei Frari ornate dalle splendide tombe dei Dogi, gli uomini più potenti di Venezia sepolti, per contrappasso, nelle chiese dei più poveri.

Come dovrebbe essere per Lei Venezia.

Affascinante ed incantatrice, nonostante i milioni di turisti che ogni anno l’affollano.

text Alessandra Lucarelli You currently live in New York and have your collections produced in Florence. Why? My goal is to create one of the finest products in the world. Magrì is intentionally partnered with Florentine manufacturers and artisans because we share a common expectation for excellence.

Fashion and architecture: what is the red thread weaving through your collections?

Designing handbags is a natural extension of my architectural background. The real magic is to capture a particular emotion through the design narrative; a vernacular expressed through the bag’s proportions, elegant construction and materials. As architect Mies van der Rohe once said, “God is in the details”.

What is the inspiring philosophy of Magrì handbags?

Handbags can communicate what a woman values and what she wants to personify. My desire is for women to feel feminine and to find empowerment in being female. The iconic Magrì logo of the two-headed serpent represents the inherent duality that we possess. She is complex, graceful, exciting and at the same time mysterious and dark.

Your timeless icon of style?

Diane Vreeland, the legendary editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Vreeland is my timeless icon of style. She was not a lady; she was a force of nature.

Your next challenge?

To learn to say “marvelous” in Italian. It never comes out the right way.

Moda e architettura: qual è il fil rouge che troviamo nelle sue collezioni?

Disegnare borse rappresenta una naturale estensione della mia formazione da architetto. La magia sta nel catturare una particolare emozione attraverso la narrazione del disegno; un gergo che si esprime attraverso le proporzioni della borsa, la costruzione e l’uso di materiali eleganti. Come diceva l’architetto Mies van der Rohe: “Dio è nei dettagli”.

La filosofia alla base della borse Magrì.

Il logo simbolo di Magrì, il serpente a due teste, rappresenta l’innato dualismo che la donna possede: è complessa, aggraziata, eccitante ma anche misteriosa e dark.

Un’icona di sempre.

Diane Vreeland, la leggendaria direttrice di Harper’s Bazaar e Vogue. Vreeland è la mia icona di stile senza tempo: non era una donna, era una forza della natura.

Prossima sfida?

Imparare a dire marvelous in italiano. Non mi viene mai fuori bene.

text Federica Repetto How did your passion for the sea start?

This interest of mine has been influenced by the fact that I was born and raised in the navy of Venice, where my father stayed for all his career as naval officer, as well as by our family home, located a few steps from the Arsenal.

You have purchased and restored a wonderful boat, could you tell us something about this?

When I heard in 2005 that the navy of Venice intended to let two boats of the same class fall into disuse, I participated in the auction and got the MBN 1054 motor boat.

In your opinion, what should characterize sailing in the Venetian lagoon?

It is possible to achieve a kind of eco-friendly and educated tourism concerning rowboats , sailing boats and motorboats: we just have respect for the environment around us, being also aware of its vulnerability.

Which itinerary would you recommend?

You will be amazed by looking at the Casone di Valle Zappa that overlooks the sandbank like the fairy castle of our childhood.

What would your ideal Venice be like?

I wish Venice were for all people, with more attention to its culture, history, tradition, which is - as Mahler once said ‘not the cult of ashes but the custody of fire.

Come è nata la passione per il mare?

L’essere nato e cresciuto a Venezia, nell’ambiente della Marina Militare, nella quale mio padre ha percorso tutta la sua carriera di ufficiale, la casa di famiglia a pochi passi dall’Arsenale, hanno contribuito a questo mio interesse.

Ha acquistato e restaurato una splendida imbarcazione, ce ne parla?

Quando seppi, nel 2005, che la Marina intendeva dismettere due imbarcazioni della stessa classe, partecipai all’asta, aggiudicandomi la MBN 1054.

Come dovrebbe essere a suo parere vissuta la nautica in laguna?

Il turismo ecocompatibile e colto si può fare, sia con le barche a remi, sia a vela o anche con il motore, basta avere estremo rispetto e consapevolezza della fragilità dell’ambiente in cui ci troviamo a vivere.

Quale itinerario consiglia?

Chi non resterebbe estasiato dalla vista del Casone Zappa che emerge dalle barene come il castello fatato della nostra infanzia!.

Come vorrebbe fosse la sua Venezia?

Una Venezia accogliente per tutti, più attenta alla sua cultura, storia, tradizione, che, come diceva Mahler non è culto delle ceneri ma custodia del fuoco.

“I started as a gondolier 25 years ago because I was passionate about Venetian rowing and because of a close tie to the real Venice”.

Why is it important to discover Venice from the water?

“I think it’s possible to perceive the true greatness of the city and at the same time, the small size and fragility of Venice. Today it’s under pressure from a tourism that is out of control, with no rules and no respect”.

Which tour do you recommend for a tourist visiting our city for the first time?

“I love to recommend a route to my clients that goes off the beaten track, away from the usual San Marco. I prefer to take them to discover a minor Venice, along small canals in the area of San Polo or Cannaregio. And they are always ecstatic about it.

What does gondolier de casada mean?

“In the days of the Serenissima, the Venetian Republic, the gondolier worked in the service of one family and was called gondolier “de casada” or of the house. He took the noble family members everywhere. The characteristic gold and white livery of those times, the historic uniform, is now worn when navigating a wedding gondola”.

How would you like your Venice to be? “ “I would like everyone, Venetians and tourists, to be polite and respectful towards a city that has no equal anywhere in the world”.

Quando ha iniziato la sua professione?

“Ho cominciato la mia professione di gondoliere 25 anni fa per passione della voga alla veneta e uno stretto legame con la vera Venezia”.

Perché è importante scoprire Venezia dall’acqua?

“Secondo me si riesce a percepire il vero respiro di una grande e allo stesso tempo piccola e fragile città, quale è Venezia, oggigiorno messa sotto torchio da un turismo selvaggio senza regole e senza rispetto”.

Quale tour consiglia ad un turista che per la prima volta visita la nostra città?

“Amo consigliare ai miei clienti un itinerario che va sempre fuori dalle rotte abituali come San Marco. Preferisco portarli alla scoperta di una Venezia minore, percorrendo piccoli canali nella zona dei sestiere di San Polo o Cannaregio. E, tutti rimangono sempre estasiati.

Cosa significa gondolier de casada?

“Ai tempi della Serenissima il gondoliere lavorava al servizio di una sola famiglia ed era detto gondoliere “de casada”, accompagnava i nobili in ogni spostamento. L’allora caratteristica livrea bianca e oro, storica divisa, viene oggi utilizzata quando si conduce la gondola da matrimonio”.

Come vorrebbe fosse la sua Venezia?”

“Mi piacerebbe che tutti, veneziani e turisti, fossero educati e rispettosi nei confronti di una città che non ha eguali in tutto il mondo”.

She’s the godmother of the Venice film festival, the Mostra del Cinema di Venezia. With Neapolitan origins, Mediterranean beauty, a face known in film and television, she is much loved by critics and audiences who have appreciated her in films by Michelangelo Antonioni, Ferzan Ozpetek, Pupi Avati and Paul Genovese. Married to actor Luca Zingaretti, they are one of the most popular and at the same time, discrete couples in Italian cinema. We met her a few days before the inauguration of the Festival.

How are you enjoying this experience?

I’m very excited, and also honoured to open the Festival, one of the most prestigious and ancient of European cinema. It’s a very important stage, an international showcase.

How do I prepare for it? I’m trying to get rid of some of my tension...

You have already been in Venice twice, with Eros by Antonioni and L’amore buio by Antonio Capuano. What memories do you have of these experiences on the red carpet?

They were two wonderful experiences, although very different. The first, being in a film by a great internationally recognized author, was the first time for me. I was honoured to be part of the cast, but I was still very inexperienced and maybe I was too excited to enjoy the moment.

With Capuano’s film, I was more relaxed: I didn’t feel responsible for the film and I participated along with other performers who were leads.

Eros by Antonioni marked your debut in an art film. If I asked you what the great director taught you?

I learned to be stubborn, determined. To fight for what I want to do and what I want to say. I consider myself privileged to have known him and worked with him because, besides representing a certain kind of cinema, he is the history of cinema. E’ lei la madrina di questa Mostra del Cinema di Venezia.

Origini napoletane, bellezza mediterranea, un volto – cinematografico e televisivo – molto amato da critica e pubblico che l’hanno apprezzata in film di Michelangelo Antonioni, Ferzan Ozpetek, Pupi Avati e Paolo Genovese.

Sposata con l’attore Luca Zingaretti, rappresentano una delle coppie più seguite e allo stesso tempo discrete del panorama cinematografico italiano. La incontriamo pochi giorni prima dell’inaugurazione della Mostra.

Come vive questo momento?

Sono molto emozionata, nonché onorata di aprire il Festival che è uno dei più prestigiosi e antichi del cinema europeo.

Un palco molto importante, una vetrina internazionale.

Come mi preparo? Sto cercando di smorzare un po’ della mia tensione…

A Venezia era già stata due volte, con Eros di Antonioni e L’amore buio di Antonio Capuano. Che ricordi ha di queste esperienze sul red carpet?

Sono state due esperienze bellissime, seppur molto diverse. La prima, all’interno del film di un grande autore riconosciuto a livello internazionale, rappresentava la prima volta per me. Ero onorata di far parte del suo cast, ma avevo poca esperienza ancora e forse ero troppo emozionata per godere appieno quel momento. Con il film di Capuano invece ero più rilassata: non mi sentivo la responsabilità del film ed ho partecipato insieme ad altri interpreti che erano quelli principali.

Eros di Antonioni segna il suo esordio nel panorama del cinema di autore. Se le chiedessi cosa le ha insegnato il grande regista?

Ho imparato ad essere caparbia, determinata. A combattere per quello che voglio fare e voglio dire. Mi ritengo una privilegiata per averlo conosciuto e aver lavorato con lui perché, oltre a rappresentare un certo tipo di cinema, lui è la

A long career in theatre, television and film. Where do you feel most at ease and why?

In the theatre, because there’s more time to rehearse, to experiment, even when the show has already opened. Theatre lets you take on a character and eviscerate him over time.

And then there is a more direct, more immediate contact with the public. It’s not filtered. It’s an experience that I really like a lot. Film and television is a completely different kind of work, another type of journey. Lately, we could say that certain feature films are not so distant from the language of television, good television of course. For better or for worse, it has all blended together somewhat, except for the great films that come out of cinema and have a completely different language ... but they are only a very small part.

You were born in Naples. How much and in what way have your Neapolitan roots influenced your life and choices?

I come from a theatrical city with a great cultural ferment.

A city that churns out painters, intellectuals, filmmakers, a city full of contradictions, and I’ve found many of these contradictions too. Its language is a strength: Neapolitan is a complete language, theatrical, big. From my origins I’ve inherited a sunny disposition, the fact of always trying to see the glass as half full rather than half empty.

I loved Silvana Mangano with her many facets and her duality as a woman. And Monica Vitti.

Your greatest achievement?

Being able to say, I’m not going to do this thing because I don’t like it. Today I try to make choices that might have fewer returns in terms of popularity, but in which I recognize myself.

One thing you’ve learned from cinema, and one from love.

From love I’ve learned to understand, in the broadest sense, knowledge of the other person. Also watching films from completely different cultures, you learn to love through the imaginative and the imaginary. And then there is acceptance. These are two things that are very difficult to find these days because everyone is too focused on themselves.

storia del cinema. Nonostante il limite fisico, Antonioni era un uomo con una grandissima forza interiore e tanta voglia di esprimersi. E umanamente, vedere un uomo combattere contro i propri limiti, è straziante ma allo stesso tempo illuminante.

Una lunga carriera di teatro, televisione e cinema. Dove si sente più a suo agio e perché?

A teatro, perché si ha più tempo per provare, per sperimentare anche quando già si è già in scena. Il teatro ti consente di affrontare un personaggio e sviscerarlo nel tempo. E poi ha un contatto con il pubblico più diretto, immediato, non è filtrato. Un’esperienza che mi piace moltissimo. Quello di cinema e televisione è un percorso di lavoro completamente differente, un altro tipo di viaggio. Attualmente, si può dire che certi film cinematografici non sono più così distanti da un linguaggio televisivo, parlando della buona televisione ovviamente. Nel bene e nel male si è un po’ tutto unificato, facendo eccezione per i grandi film che nascono per il cinema e hanno un linguaggio completamente diverso…ma sono una piccolissima parte.

Nata a Napoli, quanto e in cosa le sue origini partenopee hanno influenzato la sua vita e le sue scelte?

Vengo da una città teatrale con un grande fermento culturale.

Una città che sforna pittori, intellettuali, registi, una città piena di contraddizioni e di queste contraddizioni me ne sono trovate tante anch’io. La sua lingua è una forza: il napoletano è una lingua completa, teatrale, grande. Dalle mie origini ho ereditato la solarità, il fatto di cercare di guardare sempre il bicchiere mezzo pieno invece che mezzo vuoto.

Amavo Silvana Mangano nelle sue sfaccettature e nel suo essere una donna duale. E anche Monica Vitti.

La sua conquista più grande?

Poter dire: questa cosa non la faccio perché non mi piace.

Oggi cerco di fare delle scelte che magari pagano meno in termini di popolarità, ma nelle quali mi riconosco.

Una cosa imparata dal cinema, una dall’amore.

Dall’amore ho imparato la comprensione, anche in senso lato, la conoscenza dell’altro. Anche guardando i film di culture completamente differenti, si impara ad amare attraverso l’immaginifico e l’immaginario. E poi l’accoglienza. Sono due cose che nei nostri anni sono molto difficili da trovare, perché sono tutti troppo concentrati su se stessi.

Complex, revolutionary, strong women. The big screen roles that catapulted her to fame have a fragility and creative energy in them that shine through and have made her a star of Italian art cinema.

Born into a family of actors, she made her debut on stage in Paris under the coaching eye of Peter Brook, and on the big screen in 1997 with Il viaggio della sposa by Sergio Rubini. A string of brilliant performances followed: in L’ultimo bacio by Gabriele Muccino, Ilaria Alpi - Il più crudele dei giorni by Ferdinando Vicentini Orgnani, La finestra di fronte by Ferzan Ozpetek, La bestia nel cuore by Cristina Comencini, Love in the Time of Cholera

by Mike Newell, Palermo Shooting by Wim Wenders and Vincere by Marco Bellocchio, just to mention a few of the most popular films that gained her many international awards and recognitions. At the coming Venice Film Festival, she will be starring in the film I nostri ragazzi by Ivano De Matteo, introduced in the Giornate degli Autori section, which tells the story of two middle-class families devastated by a dramatic event. This is the second film, after Vinodentro in 2012, which follows a very intense time in her private life.

How are you feeling now?

I feel physically good but very mentally tired because of the rollercoaster of grief and joy that I’ve been riding in the past few years (the actress lost her mother, Cecilia Sacchi, an actress herself, shortly before giving birth to her two twin boys, Leone and Zeno, now three years old). It was very stressful, but I made it through pretty well.

If I look back at four years ago, I see a totally different person: less morally exhausted, but definitely more immature.

What drew you to the script of I nostri ragazzi?

I think that this film’s greatest quality is its dealing with universal themes: the fear of the unknown, but also the fear of yourself and whatever is close to you. The disconcertment you experience when you look at what you have built and given life to and you hardly recognize it. But what really won me over was meeting Ivano: his energy and determination, his genuineness.

Come sta Giovanna Mezzogiorno oggi?

Sono una persona che sta bene. Mi porto dietro una grande stanchezza, che deriva dall’aver superato anni decisivi, tra momenti drammatici e gioie immense (l’attrice ha perso la madre, Cecilia Sacchi, anche lei attrice, e poco dopo ha avuto i due gemelli, Leone e Zeno, oggi di tre anni, ndr). Ma ce l’ho fatta, credo abbastanza bene. Se mi guardo indietro e penso a quattro anni fa vedo una persona totalmente diversa: meno provata, ma infinitamente più infantile.

Cosa l’ha colpita della sceneggiatura de I nostri ragazzi?

Penso che questo film abbia il pregio delle grandi sceneggiature, ovvero quello di trattare temi universali: la paura dell’ignoto ma anche la paura di se stessi e di tutto ciò che si ha più vicino. Lo sconcerto nel guardare come in uno specchio quello che si è costruito e generato senza riconoscerlo. Però devo precisare che quello che mi ha conquistato è stato l’incontro con Ivano: la sua energia, la sua grinta e la sua autenticità.

In quale famiglia è cresciuta Giovanna Mezzogiorno, e quali sono i valori che cerca di trasmettere oggi ai suoi due figli?

I wish for my children to grow up feeling respected as human beings, feeling that we trust them whatever their life choices are. I wish for them to be loyal and respectable people, in the broadest sense of the word, and to live knowing what justice means.

You have conceived, alongside your mother, the Vittorio Mezzogiorno award, and taken part, as producer and voice-over, in the film Negli occhi by Daniele Anzellotti and Francesco Del Grosso dedicated to your father. How much do you still feel his presence and what is the greatest thing he taught you?

Curiosity, dedication, passion for risk-taking and for whatever is unpredictable. The respect for one’s roots and loved ones without being subject to them. The fear of boredom and apathy. The fight against laziness. A huge sense of humility. All this is the lasting and indelible legacy he left me with.

In June 2014, you were appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication for being an actress who promotes cinema and theatre relations between Italy and France. How did you manage to bridge the gap between the two cultures?

I see France as a culturally evolved country, very open to talent, new developments and innovation. It is a country that changed our family history. We lived there for many years and my parents would have never been what they were, and I would not be what I am today, without it. France raised, educated and trained us. I feel very grateful to France.

The one thing Italian cinema should learn from French cinema and vice versa.

Italy should learn from France what I have just explained above.

In turn, France should learn a healthy sense of humility from Italy.

You have been playing many roles and receiving many recognitions since your debut on the big screen. What role has given you the greatest sense of accomplishment so far and why?

All the roles I have played so far taught me something and made me a better actress. However, I consider the character I played in Vincere the hardest and most difficult one. I had a very hard time playing that role, but I made it.

You met your husband during the shooting of the film. What memories do you have of the set?

I remember the hard work, Ida, the discovery of Turin and Trento.

And, of course, the love that changed my life.

Vorrei che i miei figli crescessero sentendosi rispettati come esseri umani, sentendo la nostra fiducia in loro, al di là delle loro scelte di vita. Che fossero persone leali e perbene, nel senso più ampio del termine, e che vivessero conoscendo l’idea di giustizia.

Ha ideato, insieme a sua madre, il premio Vittorio Mezzogiorno, e ha partecipato come produttrice e voce narrante alla realizzazione del film Negli occhi di Daniele Anzellotti e Francesco Del Grosso, dedicato a suo padre. Quanto è presente la sua figura oggi, e qual è la cosa più grande che le ha insegnato?

La curiosità, l’impegno, la passione per il rischio e per ciò che non è scontato. Il rispetto per le radici e gli affetti ma anche il rifiuto di essere schiavi di essi. La paura della noia e dell’inerzia.

La guerra alla pigrizia. L’umiltà, enorme. Queste le impressioni forti che mi lascia, indelebili e vivissime.

Lo scorso giugno è stata insignita dell’onorificenza di Cavaliere dell’Ordine delle Arti e delle Lettere dal ministero della Cultura e della Comunicazione francese, in quanto attrice che riflette splendidamente i rapporti cinematografici e teatrali tra Italia e Francia. Come è nata e come si è sviluppata questa dualità artistica tra le due culture?

Considero la Francia un esempio di paese culturalmente evoluto, vitale e ricettivo rispetto al talento, alle novità e alle innovazioni. È un paese che ha cambiato la nostra storia. Abbiamo vissuto lì molti anni e non saremmo diventati quello che siamo stati, e che sono io oggi, se questo non fosse accaduto. Ci ha educati, formati, cresciuti. Provo un immenso senso di gratitudine nei suoi confronti.

Una cosa che il cinema italiano dovrebbe imparare dal cinema francese, e viceversa.

L’Italia dovrebbe imparare dalla Francia tutto ciò che ho sopra elencato....la Francia dall’Italia, per contro, dovrebbe imparare un po’ di sana umiltà.

Tra l’esordio sul grande schermo e oggi sono passati numerosissimi ruoli e altrettanti riconoscimenti. Se le chiedessi quale ruolo le ha dato maggiore soddisfazione, e perché?

Tutti i ruoli che ho interpretato mi hanno insegnato e portato avanti nel mio percorso e nella conoscenza della recitazione. Ma considero Vincere, sino ad oggi, il più duro, spietato e difficile.

Averlo portato a termine, avercela fatta, è stato durissimo.

Durante le riprese ha conosciuto suo marito…Che ricordi ha di quel set?

Ricordo la fatica, Ida, la scoperta di Torino e di Trento. E poi, ovviamente, l’amore che ha cambiato il corso della mia vita.

Masbedo. The famous video-artist duo, debuts behind the camera by directing an all-female film on absence Famoso duo di videoartisti, debutta alla regia con un film sull’assenza, declinata al femminile Introduced at the 71st Venice Film Festival, in the Venice Days section, The Lack represents the touching and intense debut of Masbedo, the worldfamous video-artist duo, as film directors. We asked Nicolò Massazza and Jacopo Bedogni, whose artwork is shown in the world’s greatest contemporary art museums, to describe this “close encounter” with the complex world of women.

What made you decide to make the film?

It was something we had been hoping to do for some time.

The Lack expresses our need to combine the video-art world and film-making by using our own language. The film allowed us to experiment beyond the video-art experience, but we let ourselves be guided by chance.

The result of this “experiment”, which lasted over a year, are six stories set in a landscape between Iceland and the Eolian Islands, between the peninsula of Reykjavick and Lisca Bianca.

The women’s world, the opposite of men’s world, and a theme, the lack, which men usually know little about. How did you broach the subject?

The relationship theme, of which absence is a major aspect, is very important in our work. We believe women are stronger than men when confronted with “the lack of” , as if they were able to use a wider alpabet to cope with and work through the lack of someone in their life and, unlike men,

even to convert it into a positive force. The actresses we worked with were very helpful, their performance was more of a psychological nature rather than physical. Every story represents the sense of absence and we asked the actresses to interiorize it through their mood. In order to make this privation all the more real, we used physical exertion and discomfort to create that state of subtle suffering that comes with “absence”.

Six stories, six women performing all alone. Who is the film’s imaginary co-star?

The six women are alone. There is only one episode in which two characters are in some sort of interaction to cope with the difficulty of breaking up and move from the known to an unknown dimension, making the deliberate choice of solitude.

We wanted the film to be drastic, nerve-racking, filled with depressing silence and nature dominating the scene. Probably nature is the film’s co-star, nonetheless, these women live immersed in their silent and primitive universe. There are no extras in the film, nobody alleviates the sense of solitude of these women played by Lea Mornar, Xin Wang, Giorgia Sinicorni, Ginevra Bulgari, Emanuela Villagrossi, Cinzia Brugnoli and the young girl Sofia Di Negro.

Presentato alla 71° Mostra del cinema di Venezia, nella sezione Giornate degli Autori, The Lack è il toccante e intenso debutto dietro la macchina da presa di Masbedo, famoso duo di videoartisti presenti nei grandi musei di arte contemporanea nel mondo. A Nicolò Massazza e Jacopo Bedogni abbiamo chiesto di raccontarci questo incontro ravvicinato con la complessità dell’universo femminile.

La scintilla che vi ha fatto decidere di fare un film?

Era un desiderio che avevamo da tempo: The Lack è nato dall’esigenza di coniugare il mondo della video-arte con un progetto cinematografico utilizzando il nostro linguaggio. Il film ci ha permesso di sperimentare oltre l’esperienza videoartistica, ma abbiamo deciso comunque di girare con strutture aperte, lasciando che ci guidasse il caso. Da questo percorso - durato più di un anno - sono emersi tre blocchi, sei storie immerse in un paesaggio fra l’Islanda e le Eolie, tra la penisola di Reykjavick e Lisca Bianca.

Le donne, un universo opposto a quello maschile e un tema, la mancanza, altrettanto lontano dal mondo degli uomini. Come l’avete affrontato?

Il tema della relazione è uno dei temi fondamentali del nostro lavoro, di cui la mancanza costituisce un aspetto importante. Abbiamo immaginato la donna come portatrice di una resistenza in più di fronte a questo tema, come se fosse in grado di utilizzare un alfabeto più ampio per elaborare l’emozione della mancanza e fosse,

a differenza dell’uomo, in grado di trasformarla in una spinta positiva. In questa sorta di esplorazione dell’alterità le attrici ci sono state di grande aiuto, il loro è stato più un lavoro psicologico che di interpretazione. Abbiamo generato attraverso ogni storia un senso di mancanza e abbiamo chiesto che lo interiorizzassero attraverso il loro stato d’animo. Spesso, per rendere reale questo disagio, abbiamo messo in atto un gesto performativo: la fatica, il disagio fisici sono stati mezzi per creare questo stato di sottile sofferenza che genera ogni assenza.

Quattro storie, sei donne sole sulla scena. Chi è il co- protagonista immaginario di questo film?

Le sei donne sono sole. In un unico episodio c’è una sorta di interazione tra due personaggi che affrontano il sentimento difficile del distacco compiendo il passaggio da uno stato conosciuto verso una dimensione inesplorata . la scelta della solitudine olevamo che la voce del film fosse radicale, snervante tra un silenzio malinconico e la presa diretta della natura. E è proprio la natura forse il vero coprotagonista del film, ma in realtà ognuna di queste donne è immersa in un proprio universo silenzioso e primitivo: non ci sono comparse, nessuno accompagna la solitudine di queste donne interpretate da Lea Mornar, Xin Wang, Giorgia Sinicorni, Ginevra Bulgari, Emanuela Villagrossi, Cinzia Brugnoli e la piccola Sofia Di Negro.

Somebody is the last act of Women’s Tales, a series of short films commissioned by Miu Miu and directed by internationally-renowned female film directors. It is the brilliant Miranda July’s turn behind the camera this time. The short film, accompanied by the showing of Spark and Light by So Yong Kim, was shown for the first time last August, within the Giornate degli Autori – Venice Days program of the International Venice Film Festival, where the other two Women’s Tales short films were introduced in 2012 and 2013. Miu Miu Women’s Tales invited the female directors to celebrate femininity in the 21st century and explore it with a critical eye, which means embracing women’s complexity and infinite contradictions to make them reflect and be moved. In particular, Somebody captures our insatiable hunger for communication, technology, avatar and outsourcing and blends it into what seems like a near and surreal future, but is not. It is the present.

Miu, Miranda July worked with a team of experts to develop a complex and sophisticated app, to which anyone can send or deliver a message. The costumes were designed by drawing inspiration from the same mingling of past, present and future time. The characters wear outfits from the Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2014 collection, matched with vintage pieces and streetwear. The ten-minute film explores the life of joggers, waitresses and prison guards. Somebody tells the story of Jessica who tells Caleb that she doesn’t want to date him anymore by using an app, it describes the friendship between Yolanda and Blanca, it makes Jeffy propose to the solitary Victoria and two prison guards engage in a ménage-à-trois with a plant in pot, withered and suffering, named Anthony.

The last episode of the Womens’ Tales series shows how brilliant Miranda July is in capturing that strange tenderness which is so typical of today’s relationships and adds a bittersweet note to Miuccia Prada’s motion-picture world.

Dietro la macchina da presa questa volta la brava e intensa Miranda July. Il corto, accompagnato dalla visione di Spark and Light di So Yong Kim, ha debuttato lo scorso agosto nell’ambito del programma delle Giornate degli Autori – Venice Days della Mostra Internazionale del Cinema di Venezia, che ha accolto il debutto dei corti di Women’s Tales anche nel 2012 e nel 2013. Miu Miu Women’s Tales ha invitato le registe a celebrare la femminilità nel XXI secolo, esplorandola con occhio critico.

Ciò significa abbracciare le infinite complessità e contraddizioni delle donne, per farle riflettere ed emozionare. Somebody in particolare prende la nostra insaziabile fame di comunicazione, tecnologia, avatar e outsourcing, e la incorpora in ciò che sembra un futuro vicino e surreale, ma non lo è. E’ il presente. Con il supporto di Miu Miu, Miranda July ha lavorato con un team di esperti per sviluppare

una complessa e sofisticata app, dove ognuno potrà inviare o consegnare i propri primi messaggi.

Il design dei costumi di scena riprende la medesima commistione tra passato, presente e futuro. I personaggi indossano capi della collezione Miu Miu Autunno/ Inverno 2014, abbinati a pezzi vintage e streetwear. In soli dieci minuti, il film scorre, snodandosi tra jogger,cameriere e guardie carcerarie. Così nel film si intrecciano rapide le storie di Jessica che vuol dire a Caleb che non vuol essere più la sua ragazza e usa la app; ma Somebody salva anche l’amicizia tra Yolanda e Blanca, fa la proposta di matrimonio di Jeffy alla solitaria Victoria, e dà il via ad un curioso ménage-à-trois tra due guardie carcerarie e una pianta in vaso, appassita e sofferente, di nome Anthony. L’ultimo episodio della serie Womens’ Tales svela la straordinaria capacità di Miranda July di catturare quella strana tenerezza che caratterizza le relazioni odierne e aggiunge un tassello dolce amaro agli universi cinematografici voluti da Miuccia Prada.

The truth about living with a famous mother is told by her daughter Roberta Camerino Zanga La verità sulla vita accanto a una madre famosa confidata dalla figlia Roberta Camerino Zanga Is it coming out, or not? There’s a lot of talk about it, but those directly involved are tight-lipped about the publisher, the release date, and whether or not the author will decide to actually give it to the press. It’s partly the story of a daughter of art, one of the creatures that grow in the shadow of a famous parent and receive only the shade from that fame that is at times so heavy that it obscures the sun.

This condition can have many advantages, true, sometimes incommensurable, such as wealth, fame (although reflected), reputation (even if acquired), with a pyrotechnic life full of unexpected and exciting events. But there is also the famous “shadow” which blocks the sun’s direct rays, which imposes an acquiescent silence, due obedience, a repressed rage, a “happiness” that is expected because that is what is demanded. She knows she gives so much so obviously she expects positive answers, enthusiastic answers, a thank-you not pronounced but hinted at unequivocally.

We’re talking about a person who in Venice - and the world

- is known as “the daughter of Giuliana Camerino”, Roberta.

And in the beginning, referring to the book coming out, I spoke in the plural because Roberta wrote the book about her life entrusting the story to the elegant and affectionate pen of Federica Repetto. A four-handed book?

No: two hands and one heart.

It is not easy for a Venetian like me to talk about a Venetian like Roberta. Everyone thinks

they know everything about her because as the shadow of her mother she was always in the limelight and no one ever knew what real contributions Roberta di Camerino made to the company where she worked alongside her mother for thirty years, her specificity, never valued directly but always in terms of what the world was expecting from the “daughter of Giuliana”, or shards of Giuliana that in the title of the book (at the time of writing, publication is still uncertain!) become shards of Roberta.

Because basically this is the life of the “lucky girl” who could fly around the world, sit at the table with heads of state and in-

E’ un po’ la storia di una figlia d’arte, una delle creature che crescono all’ombra di un genitore famoso e di quella fama ricevono appunto l’ombra a volte così ingombrante da oscurare il sole. Un libro a quattro mani? No: a due mani e un cuore.

vantaggi, è vero, a volte incommensurabili , come l’agiatezza, la celebrità (anche se riflessa) , la notorietà (anche se acquisita ), una vita con risvolti pirotecnici piena di imprevisti esaltanti, ma c’è anche quella famosa “ombra” che impedisce ai raggi di sole di arrivare diretti, che impone un silenzio acquiescente, un’obbedienza dovuta, una rabbia compressa, una “felicità” da ritenere tale perché chi la trasmette lo esige, sa di dare tanto e ovviamente si aspetta risposte positive, entusiaste, un grazie non pronunciato ma fatto intendere inequivocabilmente.

Stiamo parlando di un personaggio che a Venezia – e nel mondo - è conosciuto come “la

ternational celebrities, receive princesses and emirs, famous artists, shake hands with prestigious men, always accepted as Roberta (di) Camerino. But her name did not actually have that pseudo-aristocratic particle added for marketing reasons by her mother when she founded the prestigious brand that would lead to the first “Made in Italy” in the world, always as her daughter and never for her personal prerogatives.

That good that it has brought or what it has cost in terms of giving up one’s identity, that name that “resembles” that of the largest creative industry in Italian fashion in the second half of the twentieth century, “Roberta di Camerino”, is told in the story of the wonderful book whose draft Roberta has let only a few close friends read.

Why so much hesitation in publishing it? Aware of having entrusted her truth to the page, filtered by the sensitivity of her friend and journalist Repetto, her truth without hypocrisy, without exaggerating such an important, demanding presence as her famous, authoritative and authoritarian (by necessity) mother, but without silencing the weight of imposed silence, of difficult situations, of a life always in the limelight but behind the scenes, a position granted by accident of birth and not for personal qualities.

Initiatives, tireless work, always subjected to judgment that was exacerbated by family confidentiality and therefore more severe, endured with intelligent but undesired submission. It is a life spent in the shade of a boundless admiration for the mother but also an affection that Giuliana occasionally allowed to be understood by this daughter, sometimes a little awkward, be-

cause in some reactions, in her sensitivity, she resembled her.

And Roberta reciprocated that affection with an outward effort that could lift her up, give her the slight satisfaction of “loving you as a mother, yes, but in my own way”.

A life together with love and hard work, with resentments and strictness. Today Roberta is a Venetian signora who loves her family, daughters, grandchildren, husband Giannantonio Zanga, and friends. Many of her friends, – like this writer - were great friends of the mother and witnesses to thirty years of routine, and can go back over a life of clashes and encounters between two great personalities, the extrovert Giuliana, secure, strong, beautiful and bursting with femininity, open to the world and illuminated by glory, and an introvert who participated in the glory of her mother drawing an indirect recognition, perhaps expressed only intermittently, because time in her family life - that

by Giuliana’s will coincided with work in the “firm” – was not granted easily to “inactivity”.

Insecurity, cleverly presented as shyness, accompanied Roberta’s development. Today, now that her famous mother has passed away, she recalls the real mother with a newfound love, the one that, between the events of a difficult lifetime, knew how to transmit a feeling of maternal love, although “in her own way”.

Today, this is the mother that Roberta Camerino, without the (di), remembers with poignant nostalgia. It is no coincidence that her book closes with a statement that comes from the heart, almost a dedication addressed to the person who gave her life and was there with her, and who Roberta now remembers only as a mother. “...I miss her, I miss my mom Giuliana, not Giuliana known as Roberta di Camerino”.

Cosa abbia recato di positivo o cosa sia costato in termini di rinuncia alla propria identità quel nome che “somiglia” a quello della più grande industria creativa della moda italiana della seconda metà del Novecento, “Roberta di Camerino”, traspare nel racconto del bellissimo libro che Roberta ha fatto leggere in bozza solo a pochi intimi.

Perché tanta esitazione nel pubblicarlo? Consapevole di aver affidato alle pagine filtrate dalle sensibilità dell’amica - giornalista Repetto la sua verità senza ipocrisie, senza calcare la mano su una presenza così importante e impegnativa come è stata una mamma tanto famosa, autorevole e autoritaria (anche per necessità), ma senza tacere il peso di silenzi imposti, di confronti pesanti, di una vita sempre alla ribalta ma da dietro le quinte come posto concesso per meriti anagrafici e non per qualità personali. Iniziative, lavoro senza sosta, sempre sotto i fari di un giudizio che era esasperato dalla confidenza familiare e quindi più severo, sopportato con intelligente – ma non gradita – sottomissione. Una vita trascorsa all’ombra di una ammirazione sconfinata per la madre ma anche di un affetto che Giuliana lasciava comprendere in forme intermittenti a questa figlia a volte un po’ scomoda perché in qualche reazione, nella sensi-

bilità, le somigliava. E Roberta quell’affetto lo ricambiava con una fatica esteriore che poteva sollevarla, darle la piccola soddisfazione di “amarti come mamma sì ma a modo mio”.

Una vita insieme con amore e con fatica, con risentimenti e rigore. Oggi Roberta, signora veneziana che adora la sua famiglia, le figlie, le nipoti, il marito Giannantonio Zanga, gli amici molti dei quali – come chi scrive – sono stati grandi amici della madre e testimoni di trent’anni di consuetudine, può ripassare una vita di scontri e incontri tra due grandi personalità, una estroversa, Giuliana, sicura, forte, bella di una femminilità prorompente, aperta al mondo e illuminata dalla gloria, una introversa che collaborava alla gloria della madre traendone un riconoscimento indiretto, forse espresso a tratti perché il tempo nella sua vita familiare – che per volontà di Giuliana coincideva con il lavoro in ”ditta” - non si concedeva facilmente a spazi “inattivi”.

Una insicurezza, presentata astutamente come timidezza, ha accompagnato il divenire di Roberta che oggi, scomparsa la mamma famosa ricorda con un amore ritrovato la mamma vera, quella che tra le pieghe di una vita farraginosa sapeva lasciar trasparire un sentimento d’amore materno, sia pure “a modo suo”. E’ questa mamma che oggi Roberta Camerino, senza (di), ricorda con nostalgia struggente.

Non a caso il suo libro si conclude con una dichiarazione che arriva dal cuore, quasi una dedica indirizzata alla persona che le ha dato e accompagnato la vita e che ora Roberta ricorda solo come madre. “…mi manca, mi manca Giuliana la mia mamma, non Giuliana detta Roberta di Camerino”.

Discovering Tintoretto alla scoperta di tintoretto text Federica Repetto

Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (the little dyer, T.n) -because his father was a dyer by trade- was not just a painter, but one of the greatest representatives of the Venetian School and a great Renaissance artist as well. Our itinerary starts on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, where it is possible to enjoy the most amazing view of Venice and where the church designed by Palladio is located, with its a classical façade and high nave and with its undecorated yet imposing interior with white-surfaced walls. The two large paintings by Tintoretto, one of which depicting The Last Supper, stand out from the very beautiful paintings here due to their great elegance. Then we leave the island of San Giorgio Maggiore to cross St. Mark’s basin on a steamer and reach the church of Santa Maria della Salute, the most beautiful Baroque-style church in Venice, with its magnificent statues and vaults around the central cupola, less heavy and massive. Located in the sacristy, a painting depicting The Wedding at Cana by a young Tintoretto shows a connection with the painting by Paolo Veronese in the choice of light, bright colors for women’s hairstyles. Continuing in the direction of the church of San Trovaso, we pass through the site of St. Gregory Abbey, the Campiello BarJacopo Robusti, noto come il Tintoretto - soprannome che gli derivò dal mestiere paterno, tintore di stoffe – non è solo un pittore italiano ma uno dei più grandi esponenti della scuola veneziana nonchè grande artista del Rinascimento. Il nostro itinerario inizia dall’isola di San Giorgio, da cui si gode del più spettacolare panorama della città, e la cui chiesa palladiana presenta una facciata classica su alto podio mentre l’interno appare in tutta la sua grandiosa e bianca semplicità. Fra le bellissime pale d’altare spiccano, in tutta la loro maestosa eleganza, i due teleri del Tintoretto di cui uno illustra una Ultima Cena. Lasciata l’isola di San Giorgio si attraversa il bacino a bordo di un vaporetto per raggiungere la Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute, il più bell’edificio religioso barocco, sfarzosa di statue e volute attorno alla cupola centrale, meno pesante e massiccia. Nella sua sacrestia è conservato il telero rappresentante Le Nozze di Cana realizzate da un giovane Tintoretto, che dimostra un legame con la pittura di Paolo Veronese per via della atmosfera che si intravede nelle acconciature femminili, colori chiari e luminosi. Scuola Grande and Chiesa di San Rocco

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco, where Tintoretto had worked for 40 years, has great importance in the history of 16th century Venetian art

baro –where you can spot part of the garden and of the posterior façade of Palazzo Dario and Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, official seat of the Guggenheim Foundation,- the Fondamenta degli Incurabili –a large hospice founded to shelter people with incurable venereal diseases- and the waterfront promenade Le Zattere that overlooks the Giudecca Canal.Arrived at the church of San Trovaso, we can admire a Last Supper produced in the young period of Tintoretto’s life, illuminated by the natural light coming from the arches in the back of the church which seem to lead in a garden. The last stop in this tour in the world of art that leads to the discovery of Tintoretto’s painting will be the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, where this artist had worked for 40 years and which had a great importance in the history of 16th century Venetian art. A competition was held for the decoration of its Sala dell’ Albergo, and the most famous painters in Venice submitted their works: Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, Federico Zuccari, Giuseppe Salviati and Andrea Schiavone. The competition was won by Tintoretto, who donated to the Scuola Grande one of his most important masterpieces, the wonderful series of paintings conceived and produced in the Scuola’s three halls between cui si può vedere parte del giardino e della facciata posteriore di Palazzo Dario e Palazzo Venier dei Leoni sede della Fondazione Guggenheim, fondamenta degli Incurabili - area in cui si trovava una grande struttura sanitaria che accoglieva gli ammalati di malattie veneree – e le Zattere, riva prospiciente il Canale della Giudecca. L’ultima tappa di questa passeggiata nel mondo dell’arte, alla scoperta di Tintoretto, sarà la Scuola Grande di San Rocco, dove l’artista lavorò per 40 anni, e che rappresenta un momento importante nella storia della pittura veneziana del XVI secolo. Per decorare la sua Sala dell’Albergo fu indetto un concorso a cui parteciparono i più illustri pittori attivi a Venezia: Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, Federico Zuccari, Giuseppe Salviati, Andrea Schiavone. remains are kept in the church of the Madonna dell’Orto

1564 and 1588, with a marvelous iconography and continuous references coming together in the paintings on the walls that depict scenes from the New Testament; scenes that find a correspondence in those from the Old Testament on the ceiling and that fully explain, together with the others, the roots of the Christian religion. And if you still want to see more, you can decide to discover other works by this famous artist in the Gallerie dell’ Accademia and inside Palazzo Ducale.And it is impossible to forget Tintoretto’s Paradise, which is said to be -22 by 9 meters in size- the largest work in the world, which still covers the wall at the entrance of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio. Not to be missed is also the entrance to Tintoretto’s house, a high, narrow, 15th century Gothic style building with a wonderful arch on the first floor and the entrance marked by a small marble statue of Hercules holding his club and a commemorative plaque dedicated to Jacopo Robusti, Tintoretto, who lived there for 20 years.

The house is currently inhabited. Tintoretto, who also painted some façades of Venetian palaces –today, the traces of those works are not evident anymore- , was buried near his native house. Assolutamente da vedere l’esterno della casa del Tintoretto, palazzo risalente al Quattrocento in stile gotico, alto e stretto con una splendida trifora al primo piano, sulla cui facciata si trovano una piccola statua in marmo rappresentante Ercole con clava e una lapide a ricordo di Jacopo Robusti, Tintoretto, che visse nella casa per vent’anni, la residenza è attualmente privata ed abitata. Tintoretto, che affrescò anche alcune facciate di palazzi veneziani le cui tracce di pitture sono oggi scomparse, venne sepolto non lontano dalla sua casa natale. Le sue spoglie sono custodite all’interno della Chiesa della Madonna dell’Orto.

An exhibition at the Guggenheim Collection recounts Azimut/h, the explosive gallery/review in Milan Una mostra alla Collezione Guggenheim racconta Azimut/h, esplosiva galleria/rivista nata a Milano Until the 19th of January, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice celebrates Azimut/h, the gallery and journal founded in 1959 in Milan by Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) and Enrico Castellani (1930. This is an ideal bridge for joining the Venetian museum with the New York museum of the same name, which is simultaneously devoting its space to another avant-garde movement of European origin, Gruppo Zero. We asked its curator, Luca Massimo Barbero, to tell us how he conceived and wanted this exhibition with its different levels of information and emotion.

“This exhibit is select, even if it offers more than 73 works to the public, but very intense. On the one hand, the exhibition has a strong philological side, with a collection of works published in the journal or displayed in the gallery, in order to faithfully reproduce that extraordinary moment. On the other hand, every room takes on and recounts one aspect of the phenomenon, with a sort of autonomy that is accomplished in itself. It opens with a section devoted to the masters and companions who make up the ideal matrix of this environment: Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri, the Americans Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and the closest, most active associates, Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely.

Then there is a room dedicated to the original and surprising works

by Manzoni and a number of rare works by Castellani, which form the germinal nucleus of the new artistic vision. These provide a counterpoint to the successive rooms dedicated to the national and international network, with works by Agostino Bonalumi, Dadamaino, Gianni Colombo, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker”.

How far did the revolutionary nature of Azimut/h reach and how well was it received by post-World War II Italy?

It was a sort of post - nuclear spark, a very faint sound that did not upset the artistic critical order but was primarily perceived by the younger generation of the time, almost like a trigger that then gave way to the neo –avant-garde movements that characterized the second half of the century. And Milan was the center of it all.

A new artistic conception: it was an exhibit and the title of the second issue of the journal. Can you quickly summarize this

“Either you’ve got it, or you never will.” Take it from Stefano Contini, enamoured of art and of his artists “O ce l’hai o non l’avrai mai”.

We are talking about Stefano Contini and his passion for art, which has lead him to become one of the most important gallery owners in the world today, one of those creating, not following, the market. He has told us about his career, about his brand new London gallery now joining the ones in Venice and Cortina and, above all, he has explained to us why art is beyond the crisis.

How did your extraordinary liaison with contemporary art begin?

I came to Venice when I was a little over 23 years old to work as Sales Manager for Rizzoli Editore in the Veneto region. Shortly after, it was 1976, they gave me another managerial position, still with Rizzoli, in the Rizzoli Finarte sector, which dealt with the trade in works of art.

In 1977 I left everything and opened my own gallery. They told me I was crazy, and I risked a lot: I already had a prestigious job and prospects for growth, a wife and a young son, only one apartment in Jesolo that I sold to buy the first paintings ... I never expected to get where I am today, but I was sure of one thing: I never thought of becoming a mere dealer in works of art, rather, I’ve always really wanted my profession to be cultural promotion as well, and never detached from a continuous relationship with the artists, so as to grow and to undertake a journey in their company.

Having success with art in a time of great economic crisis. Can you tell us your secret, which for 30 years has made you a protagonist on the international scene as a gallery owner and patron of the arts?

Art does not follow financial trends in an absolute sense, it is a niche that, in any case, concerns the sphere of emotions and passions. Regardless of latitude or age. Com’ è iniziata questa sua liason con l’arte contemporanea?

Sono arrivato a Venezia a poco più di 23 anni, come direttore commerciale per il Veneto della Rizzoli. Poco dopo, era il ’76, mi hanno dato un altro incarico dirigenziale sempre all’interno della Rizzoli, nella sezione Rizzoli Finarte, che si occupava di commercio di opere d’arte. Nel ’77 ho lasciato tutto e aperto una galleria mia. Mi hanno detto che ero pazzo, ho rischiato molto: avevo un lavoro prestigioso e prospettive di crescita, una moglie e un figlio piccolo, un unico appartamento a Iesolo venduto per comprare i primi quadri... Non pensavo di arrivare dove sono oggi, ma di una cosa ero sicuro: non volevo di diventare un mero commerciante di opere d’arte, ma ho sempre fortemente voluto che la mia professione fosse anche promozione culturale e non prescindesse mai da un rapporto continuo con gli artisti, con cui crescere e fare un percorso.

Avere successo con l’arte in un momento di grande crisi economica.

Ci svela il suo segreto, che da 30 anni la rende protagonista del panorama internazionale come gallerista e mecenate ?

L’arte non segue l’andamento finanziario in senso assoluto, è una nicchia che riguarda comunque la sfera delle emozioni e delle passioni personali. Senza distinzione di latitudine o di età. That said, there is another reason which protects art from financial mechanisms: unlike gold or diamonds is born from an idea, from a message, and, as such, is unique. In any case, it remains a lobby, especially if you are speaking of art at the highest levels. As an art collector, how do you choose a work of art?

There are three rules: you have to like it; you need to choose a good professional to accompany and advise you, someone you really trust; you need to choose an artist of international standing because the Italian market is not stable enough.

And how do you choose the artists to present in your galleries?

I must like their works, but that’s not enough. I have to like the artist too, I have to find a strong affinity from the human point of view.

How do you manage to keep abreast of the times?

I work 24 hours a day. Sometimes I even dream of art as well. ... And then, as I said before, you have to be inside certain international mechanisms.

Today, contemporary art dominates the market, surpassing Impressionist and modern art. Until a few years ago this was unthinkable.

What has happened?

Nothing, I think. I’ve been watching this change take place for years and so by now it doesn’t seem new to me. If art is passion and attraction, as I believe, it’s just a change in taste.

The last artist you discovered?

Mikhail Baryshnikov, first a great dancer, and today an amazing photographer.

And your first great personal intuition?

Zoran Music. With him I had a work relationship and a friendship that lasted 25 years. I have to thank him very much. He did the same with me.

Is there an artist you are courting?

Most of the time they court me ... It’s not true! [he laughs, but it is true ... ] What need does the decision to open a gallery in London answer: prestige? Market? Both?

Exactly, both. London is a prestigious showcase, which is important.

People from all over the world pass through Who are the most interesting collectors today, both from the point of view of the market as well as sensitivity?

Detto questo, c’è un’altra ragione che salvaguarda l’arte dai meccanismi finanziari: a differenza dell’oro o dei diamanti o di qualsiasi opera dell’ingegno umano, l’arte come tale nasce dall’idea, dal messaggio, e come tale è irripetibile. Rimane comunque una lobby, soprattutto se si parla di altissimi livelli. E - in una lobby - o si è fuori o si è dentro: per capirne i meccanismi bisogna essere dentro.

Da collezionista, come si sceglie un’opera d’arte ?

Ci sono tre regole: deve piacerti; devi scegliere un bravo professionista che ti accompagni e ti consigli, uno ti cui ti fidi davvero; devi scegliere un artista di respiro internazionale .

E lei come sceglie gli artisti da proporre nelle sue gallerie?

Devono piacermi le opere, ma non basta. Devi piacermi anche l’artista, devo trovare una forte affinità.Perché la complicità è un dato imprescindibile per il tipo di percorso che compio con i miei artisti.

L’arte contemporanea è una selva non facile da districare, una continua esplosione, rivoluzioni e tendenze… come non riesce mai a perdere il passo dei tempi?

Lavoro 24 ore su 24. A volte sogno d’arte anche …. E poi, come dicevo prima, bisogna essere dentro certi meccanismi internazionali.

Oggi l’arte contemporanea domina il mercato, superando gli impressionisti e l’arte moderna. Fino a pochi anni fa era impensabile . Cosa è successo?

Penso niente, sono anni che vedo questo cambiamento in atto e ormai non mi sembra una novità. Se l’arte è passione e attrazione, come penso io, è solo un mutamento di gusti L’ultimo artista che ha scoperto?

E la prima sua grande personale intuizione?

Zoran Music. Con lui ho avuto un rapporto di lavoro e amicizia durato 25 anni. Devo ringraziarlo molto. Lui fece lo stesso con me.

C’è un artista che sta corteggiando?

Mi corteggiano loro … Non è vero ! (ride, invece è proprio così…ndr) La scelta di aprire a Londra a quale esigenza risponde: prestigio?

Mercato? Entrambe?

Esattamente entrambe. Londra è una vetrina prestigiosa, importante.

Da qui passa tutto il mondo, in un fantastico mix di razze e gusti.

Quali sono i collezionisti più interessanti oggi, sia da un punto di vista di mercato che di sensibilità?

Diciamo tutto il resto del mondo, meno l’Italia purtroppo…

Una sua passione oltre l’arte?

Ho una famiglia numerosa, cinque figli. Il mio tempo libero lo trascorro con loro e con mia moglie Riccarda. Sono l’altra mia grande passione

Venezia e Luisa , che abitava a palazzo Vernier dei Leoni, attuale sede della Fondazione Guggenheim, ma amava la casa dell’amico Mariano Fortuny… Ed è proprio Palazzo Fortuny che sarà la sede della prima straordinaria mostra interamente dedicata a Luisa Casati Stampa, la donna che a inizio Novecento, con il trucco esagerato, le trasgressive ed eccentriche performance e una vita sopra le righe, fu capace di trasformare se stessa in opera d’arte, leggenda vivente, conturbante e sorprendente rappresentazione di modernità e avanguardia. Una mostra che conta oltre un centinaio opere tra dipinti, disegni, gioielli, sculture, fotografie e abiti provenienti da collezioni private e da musei internazionali. Della straordinaria collezione di opere d’arte e di ritratti che le furono dedicati o da lei commissionati, in mostra saranno esposti pezzi provenienti da collezioni private, ai quali si affiancano poi capolavori assoluti provenienti da musei di tutto il mondo come Ritratto della marchesa Casati di Giovanni Boldini della GNAM di Roma, Marchesa Casati di Augustus Edwin John dell’Art Gallery of Ontario, i molti ritratti che le dedicò Alberto Martini, Linee di forza di paesaggio maiolicato di Giacomo Balla e i gioielli di Cartier a lei ispirati. Da segnalare anche le molte fotografie che ritraggono Luisa Casati Stampa: dagli scatti di Adolphe Gayne de Meyer, Man Ray e Mariano Fortuny, a quelli rubati, quando viveva in miseria a Londra, di Cecil Beaton.

This house-museum was born in 1984, following a donation from the daughter of Vittorio Cini, Yana Cini Alliata di Montereale, of an admirable collection of works of art from her father’s rich collection, to ensure a lasting relationship between the collection and the house. During this truly unique occasion, visitors can see the splendid collection housed in the former Venetian residence of Vittorio Cini and admire great works of extraordinary quality—about thirty paintings from the Tuscan school, including The Judgment of Paris by Sandro Botticelli, Madonna with Child and two Angels by Piero di Cosimo, and the rare nucleus of paintings of the Ferrarese Renaissance, including Saint George

by Cosmè Tura.

One of the greatest masterpieces of the collection is Portrait of Two Friends by Jacopo Pontormo, recently returned to its original location at the Palazzo Cini Gallery after being exhibited at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence until last July 20, as part of one of the most important art events on Pon104 Venezia | made in Veneto

In addition to this great return, starting September 5 there is also the arrival of a new illustrious guest: The Adoration of the Shepherds by Lorenzo Lotto (1530), a masterpiece from the great painter’s mature period from the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo of Brescia collection, now housed at the Santa Giulia Museum. A painting of extraordinary colour play, suggestive quality, and light and atmospheric effects of admirable intensity.

For the opening, the Foundation has undertaken improvement works to the lighting as well the conservation of paintings, rendering the exhibition itinerary easier to follow, while maintaining the domestic dimensions and intimate, exclusive feel of a house-museum.

Palazzo Cini is found on the “peninsula” of museums located in Venice’s Dorsoduro district, which has its roots in the Academy, newly restored and expanded, with its extraordinary heritage of art, and arrives at the Punta della Dogana, a pulsating dot of contemporaneity. The rarity of masterpieces contained in the Cini collection completes this art promenade, which in its entirety represents a great opportunity to visit Venice, where a visitor can travel through time from the Middle Ages to the great contemporary age.

Davvero un’occasione unica, la possibilità di visitare la splendida raccolta in quella che fu la residenza veneziana di Vittorio Cini ed ammirare opere di grande rilievo e qualità straordinarie - una trentina di dipinti di scuola toscana, tra cui spiccano Il giudizio di Paride di Sandro Botticelli la Madonna con il Bambino e due angeli di Piero di Cosimo e il raro nucleo di dipinti del Rinascimento ferrarese, tra cui il San Giorgio di Cosmè Tura. E a questo grande ritorno dal 5 settembre si aggiunge anche l’arrivo di un nuovo ospite illustre: l’Adorazione dei pastori di Lorenzo Lotto (1530), capolavoro della maturità del grande pittore, proveniente dalla collezione della Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo di Brescia, ora conservata presso il Museo di Santa Giulia. Un dipinto straordinario giocato su accostamenti cromatici di grande suggestione ed effetti luministici e atmosferici di mirabile intensità.

Per la nuova apertura, la Fondazione ha intrapreso dei lavori di miglioramento dell’illuminazione e conservazione dei dipinti, rendendo più agevole il percorso espositivo pur mantenendo la dimensione domestica, intima ed esclusiva della casa-museo.

Palazzo Cini si inserisce nella “penisola” dei musei che si trova nel sestiere di Dorsoduro che ha una sua radice nell’Accademia, appena restaurata e ampliata con il suo patrimonio straordinario d’arte, e arriva sino alla Punta della Dogana, elemento di pulsante contemporaneità.

Opera, music and theatre. Our selection from the playbills for seasons 2014/2015 at the Teatro La Fenice and Teatro Goldoni Opera, musica e prosa. La nostra selezione dai cartelloni delle stagioni 2014/2015 del Teatro La Fenice e del Teatro Goldoni Everyone is revved up for the start of the new theatre season 2014-2015. In Venice, they are all heading to the two main theatres, La Fenice (opera, ballet and symphony) and the Goldoni (theatre), the latter under the auspices of the Teatro Stabile del Veneto. Here are the most important dates on both playbills.

The La Fenice opera season opens on November 22 with the new production of Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, with set design by Andrea De Rosa, winner of the UBU prize 2005 (repeat performances on 25 and 30 November and 2, 4 and 6 December). But the opening of this season also marks an important anniversary for La Fenice: it is ten years since the first opera season premiere in the rebuilt theatre, which opened November 12, 2004 with the dazzling staging by Robert Carsen (director) and Patrick Kinmonth (sets and costumes) of Verdi’s Traviata, the symbolic opera of the Venetian theatre that first gave it life on March 6, 1853. Directed by Diego Matheuz, the work returns this year on November 23, with performances on 27 and 29 November and 5 and 7 December. Also confirmed is the traditional New Year’s Concert directed on the occasion by Daniel Harding.

In February, Carsen returns with “his” Traviata in a revised version specifically for the Universal Exhibition in Milan 2015 (with performances from February to October). Again interwoven with the performances of La Traviata, in March, there is the new, prestigious staging by Pier Luigi Pizzi of Alceste

by Christoph Willibald Gluck, performed for the tercentenary of the birth of composer (20, 22, 24, 26 and 28 March). May sees the combination of two productions in collaboration with the Biennale Arte (which opens in Venice on May 9), with a project involving contemporary artists. On Friday, May 8 (repeat performances 10, 22, 26, 28 and 31 May) Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini will take the stage, directed by Àlex Rigola, sets and costumes by the Japanese artist Mariko Mori. Motori accesi per l’avvio della nuova stagione teatrale 2014-2015 che a Venezia fa capo ai due principali teatri della Fenice (lirica, danza e sinfonica) e del Goldoni (prosa), quest’ultimo sotto l’egida del Teatro Stabile del Veneto. Ecco le date più significative da entambi i cartelloni.

Franco Branciaroli in ‘Enrico IV’, ‘Madama Butterfly’, Glauco Mari in ‘Una pura formalità’ (A Pure Formality) addition, from Wednesday, May 20 (repeat performances 24, 27, 30 May and 3 and 6 June), is a new production – a special project, from the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale - of Norma by Vincenzo Bellini. Opening the summer festival,The spirit of the music of Venice on June 19 is the sacred oratorio Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbarism (Judith Triumphant after Having Defeated the Barbarism of Holofernes) by Antonio Vivaldi, directed by a Vivaldo expert, Stefano Montanari. The season ends in October with a new production of Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) by Mozart, with Antonello Manacorda on the podium, Damiano Michieletto directing, and sets by Paolo Fantin.

Let’s move on to theatre with our selection of dates from the billboard of the Teatro Goldoni. The season opens on October 15, 2014 (repeat performances up to the 19th) with The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, with Silvio Orlando and directed by Valerio Binasco.

Here are the new productions at the Stabile del Veneto for this season at the Goldoni: Andrée Ruth Shammah gives an evocative reinterpretation of the masterpiece by Carlo Goldoni, Gli amanti (The Lovers) (from 19 to 23 November). The artistic director of the Teatro Stabile del Veneto, Alessandro Gassmann, will be directing the new production of 7 Minuti, also with Ottavia Piccolo, from January 21 to 25, based on a text by Stefano Massini.

From the 4th to the 8th of February, on stage is Enrico IV by Luigi Pirandello, with and directed by Franco Branciaroli. Following this, from 11 to 17 February is the Goldoni Experience. Affresco di Venezia, a theatrical fresco of the Venice of the 1700s and a tribute to Carlo Goldoni and his Theatre. Goldoni is again the centre of attention in the fine production of L’impresario della Smirne (The impresario of Smyrna), directed by Roberto Valerio. Fratto X, February 26 to 28, brings to the stage the extraordinary mimicry of Antonio Rezza, directed by Flavia Mastella.

The season of the Teatro Goldoni closes with a double tribute to the history of cinema: Una pura formalità (A Pure Formality), from 8 to 12 April, starring and directed by a superb Glauco Mari and Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), produced by the Teatro Bellini in Naples, with direction by Alessandro Gassmann again, from 22 to 26 April.

In 1963, in full economic boom, Venetian entrepreneurs entered a new adventure with courage and ambition when they gave life to the innovative project of the Premio Campiello. The project’s name was suggested by Edilio Rusconi, who was journalist at that time and not yet publisher, in accord with entrepreneur Mario Valeri Manera, patron of the Premio Campiello – he has recently passed away: he showed a great awareness of social issues as well as the courage of proposing an absolutely innovative initiative for Italian people by creating a forward-looking bridge between the industrial world and culture. But why ‘Campiello’? A typical place in the public life of Venice has been the inspiration for the name of a cultural event, a name that reminds both to the participation of a “people’s” jury to elect the winner and to the connection to the place where the Premio Campiello was first conceived.

In fact, ‘Campiello’ refers to a place in Venice where people exchange and confront their ideas and meet: a hub of thoughts, stories, 110 Venezia | made in Veneto

experiences and ideas.

Seen as one of the most important literary prizes in the Italian publishing scenario, it reflects the way entrepreneurs have committed themselves to contribute to promoting Italian narrative works and to fostering the love for reading. Among the many curious facts related to the prize, the way it was first introduced to people, thanks to a trick and after a ‘premonition’.

The first edition saw the delivery of the prize immediately after a concert on the island of san Giorgio Maggiore. When the concert was over, Mario Valeri Manera announced that no ship would have docked on the island for an hour, thus ensuring that everybody had the chance to participate. The ‘premonition’ was that of Primo Levi, who said to young Ernesto Ferrero, while travelling on a train from Turin to Venice: “My name is Primo.

I can’t win but the first place”. He was joking, but he guessed right. And the Premio Campiello changed his life, since he decided to become an author. There are really many anecdotes on

Ma perché Campiello? Per indicare quel tipico spazio della vita pubblica veneziana che diventa lo spunto per definire una manifestazione culturale il cui nome sottolinea la partecipazione di una giuria “popolare” per la scelta del vincitore ed anche per il legame con la città in cui il premio è nato.

“Campiello” è, infatti, un luogo di scambio, di confronto, di incontro della nostra Venezia, fulcro e snodo di pensieri, sto-

rie, esperienze ed idee.

Considerato uno tra i più importanti premi letterari nello scenario editoriale italiano, rappresenta l’impegno degli industriali nell’offrire un contributo alla promozione della narrativa italiana e alla diffusione del piacere per la lettura.

Tra le tantissime curiosità va ricordato il suo battesimo, che avviene grazie ad un sotterfugio ed all’ombra di una premonizione. Alla prima edizione la consegna si svolge a margine di un concerto all’isola di San Giorgio. Sfumate le note, Mario Valeri Manera, annuncia ai presenti che i vaporetti per un’ora non avrebbero attraccato: così blocca tutti assicurandosi il pubblico per la festa. La premonizione, invece, è quella che Primo Levi confida in treno, mentre viaggia da Torino verso Venezia, ad un giovane Ernesto Ferrero: “Mi chiamo Primo. Devo per forza vincere io, non posso arrivare secondo”.

Scherzava, ma invece indovina. Ed il Campiello gli cambia la vita: da allora decide di diventare scrittore. Gli aneddoti in questo viaggio nel tem-

this period. Giorgio Bassani, who won the Campiello Prize in 1969, speaks about his trust in marketing: “It is more important for a good book that wants to have success to be seen in the bookstores’ shop-windows than to have good reviews”. In 1979 the event’s organizers had to convince Mario Rigoni Stern not to wear his Alpine hat when he claimed the prize, while in 2000, finalists stood on the stage under umbrellas in the heavy rain, in the courtyard of Palazzo Ducale, since the outside broadcast needed to be done.

Also three years later the rain was pouring down, so the ceremony was held in the Sala dei Dogi, but the evening was animated by a political debate aroused

by Edoardo Sanguinetti, who was given a Lifetime Achievement Award. The most successful results were achieved by Carlo Sgorlon and Primo Levi, who entered twice the final and won the first prize. In both occasion, Primo Levi didn’t accept to be interviewed by the Italian public broadcasting RAI: “Television doesn’t make me feel at ease, I am a bit depressed anyway”, he says.

The final ceremony gradually became a moment of high cultural level, with the participation of institutional offices and the representatives of enterprises, show business and culture. Over the years, the Premio Campiello saw the presence –not only as winners- of authors that have been accompanying readers by amusing them or being a reference point for their ideas and experiences.

Like Bufalino, Tobino, Malerba, Cassola, Pontiggia, Landolfi, Flaiano, Gadda and Soldati -the last three among the five finalists in the 1970 edition, as proof of the value of this prize- and writers like Dacia Maraini, Antonio Tabucchi, Enrico Brizzi, Roberto Cotroneo, Sandro Veronesi, Antonio Scurati, Nico Orengo, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, Margaret Mazzantini and Michela Murgia. They are just some of the authors that have participated to the Premio Campiello, with their different traditions and sensitivity, works and political views.

Among the great authors that haven’t participated, because of different ideological views related just to the first editions -that have disappeared with the passing of time: Moravia, Calvino, Sciascia and Volponi.

E se nel 1979 invece gli organizzatori faticano a convincere Mario Rigoni Stern a non presentarsi a ritirare il premio con il suo cappello da alpino, nel 2000, sotto la pioggia battente, i finalisti salgono con l’ombrello sul palco, allestito nel cortile di palazzo Ducale perché la ripresa televisiva non si può fermare.

Tre anni dopo piove ancora: così la cerimonia si trasferisce nella sala dei Dogi ma la serata è infiammata dalla polemica politica sollevata da Edoardo Sanguineti, che riceve il premio alla carriera. I record positivi sono di Carlo Sgorlon e di Primo Levi: partecipano due volte alla finale e vincono sempre. In occasione di entrambe le affermazioni Primo Levi rifiuta di concedere un’intervista alla Rai: “La tv mi mette a disagio, sono già depresso di mio”, confessa.

La notorietà del premio aumenta in maniera quasi inaspettata, le serate diventano sempre più scintillanti, tra le madrine – tantissime – anche Claudia Cardinale, Gina Lollobrigida e Monica Vitti – e tra gli

ospiti vogliono assolutamente esserci anche i politici. La cerimonia finale si trasforma in un momento di incontro di alto livello culturale, alla presenza delle più alte cariche istituzionali, rappresentanti dell’imprenditoria, del mondo dello spettacolo e della cultura. Negli anni si sono poi succeduti nomi di autori – non solo tra i vincitori – che hanno accompagnato e divertito i lettori, o ne hanno influenzato il pensiero e le esperienze. Of the over one hundred regattas that annually take place in Venice, the Historical Regatta, usually held on the first Sunday of September, is the one that most fascinates Venetian people.

Considered the main event in the annual calendar of “Voga alla Veneta” races as well as a unique discipline practiced for thousands of years in the Venetian lagoon, it is now even more spectacular thanks to the famous parade that takes place before the race, with dozens of 16th century style boats parading along the Grand Canal, among which the “Serenissima”, the leading boat with gondoliers in costume that carries the Doge, his wife and all the highest ranking Venetian officials. Then come the decorated gondolas -like the Bissone and the Balotine- of the various rowing clubs. Actors and oarsmen in Renaissance costumes, recall the ceremony held to celebrate the arrival in Venice of the wife of the king of Cyprus, Caterina Comaro, who gave up the throne in 1489 in favor of the Republic of Venice. It is a faithful representation of the glorious past of one of the most powerful and influential maritime republics in the Mediterranean Sea. The first evidences of the Historical Regatta date back to the second half of 1200 and are related to the Festa delle Marie, but it is possible that -given a city like Venice, which has always been so tied to the sea- the regatta has even more ancient origins, deriving from the need to train the crew to raw a gondola. The first image of the regatta dates back to a later period: the famous “Map of Venice” by Jacopo dé Barbari (1500) depicts some small boats with the word “Regata” written on them. Since then, the regatta became one of the favorite subjects among painters that wanted to depict the celebrating atmosphere of Venice. The origin of the Italian word regata is uncertain, but it could derive from the Latin aurigare (to contend), and there are evidences of its use during the16th century as a synonymous for “race”. In the past, regattas could be either competitions between boatmen or gondoliers, or great regattas held in occasion of exceptional religious or nonreligious celebrations. Delle oltre cento regate che si svolgono in laguna ogni anno, la Regata Storica, in programma la prima domenica di settembre, affascina i turisti ed è quella che più appassiona i veneziani. Considerata l’evento principale del calendario annuo di gare di Voga alla Veneta, disciplina unica al mondo praticata da millenni nella laguna di Venezia, è resa ancora più straordinaria dal celebre corteo storico che precede le gare. Decine e decine di colorate imbarcazioni cinquecentesche sfilano lungo il Canal Grande, tra cui la” Serenissima” in testa, è l’imbarcazione dogale di parata, con gondolieri in costume, che trasportano il Doge, la Dogaressa e tutte le più alte cariche della Magistratura veneziana. A seguire ci sono le sfarzose gondole da parata, bissone e balotine, e le imbarcazioni delle varie società remiere. Figuranti e rematori, nei costumi rinascimentali, rievocano la cerimonia allestita per l’arrivo a Venezia di Caterina Cornaro, sposa del re di Cipro, che rinunciò, nel 1489, al trono a favore di Venezia. E’ una fedele ricostruzione del glorioso passato di una delle Repubbliche Marinare più potenti e influenti del Mediterraneo. Le prime testimonianze storiche della Regata Storica risalgono alla metà del secolo XIII e sono legate alla Festa delle Marie, ma è probabile che, in una città come Venezia da sempre proiettata sul mare, la regata abbia avuto origini più antiche, dettate dalla necessità di addestrare gli equipaggi al remo.

Molto più tarda è la prima immagine visiva: un gruppo di barchette con la scritta “regata” si vede nella famosa “Pianta di Venezia” di Jacopo dé Barbari del 1500. Da allora la regata sarà uno dei temi prediletti dai vedutisti per rappresentare una Venezia festeggiante. L’etimologia della parola regata è incerta anche se potrebbe derivare dal termine aurigare (gareggiare), usato e attestato nel secolo XVI come sinonimo di gara. The Moro di Venezia comes back to life as it sails through the waters of the Lagoon Il Moro di Venezia torna a nuova vita e sferza le acque della laguna No other sailing event, not even the Luna Rossa team participating in many America’s Cup races, could equal the same enthusiasm and fame that are still associated to Il Moro. This great entrepreneur acknowledged that the new boats –all characterized by high-technology and innovation- that were going to participate in the most exciting sailing race in the world in 1992 could be the key to let the Made-in-Italy seduce the entire world. The fascination of Venice in the history of sailing was unique, and Gardini rightly realized that the name of Venice would positively influence the success of the boat’s challenge.

Twenty-two years after its triumph in the America’s Cup, Il Moro di Venezia still makes people dream.

The first Il Moro was launched in 1990 by the late Raul Gardini, an enthusiast yachtsman who won many regattas and international prizes as well as the former chairman of Montedison –one of the greatest chemicals giants in Europe- to compete in the 1992 America’s Cup, the most famous yachting race in the world. That year everybody in Italy enthusiastically followed the challenge of Il Moro di Venezia until the clamorous victory of the Louis Vuitton Cup which opened the doors to the challenge with America 3 -the defender boat that represented the San Diego Yacht Club- in which Il Moro was defeated 4 to 1. first time in the history of the America’s Cup that Italy has achieved such an important goal and that an Italian boat has won a regatta in the final round of the America’s Cup. The red boat with the Golden Lion of St. Mark, which has become a legend in Italy, the second of the five boats designed by architect German Frers and launched on the 7th of August 1990, Ita 07, celebrates its 24th anniversary this year. This boat has been brought back to this gem of the Adriatic Sea by entrepreneur Serena Zanelli, who comes from Umbria and has purchased Il Moro. By the end of the year, this boat is going to participate in famous regattas like the ‘Barcolana’ in Trieste and the ‘Valeziana’; as far as the next season is concerned, the boat will compete in the Tyrrhenian Sea in the first part of the next year and in the Adriatic Sea in Autumn 2015. Il Moro di Venezia -a piece of sailing history as well as a heritage willing to be shared- will also be flying the flag of the Compagnia della Vela. Then, it was this historic Venetian yacht club that supported Raul Gardini’s project thanks to the intuition of the then president of the club Giulio Donatelli, who tenaciously trusted the project, overcoming difficulties and diffidence and leading the Compagnia till they nearly caught the “old mug”, the dream and perdition of the greatest yachtsmen of every time.

Uscito dai cantieri Tencara, Montedison di Marghera, questa straordinaria imbarcazione ha fatto battere il cuore all’Italia intera nella grande sfida della Coppa America. Nel 1990 viene varato il primo esemplare, con il quale Raul Gardini, appassionato velista, oltre che patron di Montedison - uno dei maggiori imperi della chimica europea - lancia la sfida per la Coppa America del 1992: il trofeo velico più famoso nel mondo. In quell’anno tutta l’Italia segue appassionatamente l’avventura del Moro di Venezia, sino alla strepitosa vittoria della Louis Vuitton Cup che apre la porta alla sfida con il defender di San Diego America3, conclusasi per 4-1 a favore degli americani.

E’ la prima volta nella storia della Coppa America che la vela italiana raggiunge questo prestigioso traguardo ed è anche la prima volta che uno sfidante italiano vince una regata nella finale di Coppa America. Nonostante la sconfitta quella del Moro di Venezia è passata alla storia. Sicuramente gran parte del successo del Moro e del ricordo che se ne conserva ancor oggi, è legata a Raul Gardini, al suo carisma ed alla determinazione con cui aveva perseguito il suo scopo. Ma anche il nome ha avuto il suo peso. Il Moro di Venezia evocava antichi fasti e la parola Venezia ci mise del suo. .

La barca dallo scafo rosso e dal Leone di San Marco stilizzato in oro che per l’Italia è diventata un mito, il secondo dei cinque scafi, Ita 07, varato il 7 agosto 1990, disegnato dall’architetto argentino German Frers, quest’anno compie 24 anni. A riportarlo nella perla dell’Adriatico è stata l’imprenditrice umbra Serena Zanelli che da qualche mese è diventata proprietaria di questa imbarcazione che entro l’anno parteciperà a regate di grande richiamo mediatico come la “Barcolana” di Trieste e la “Veleziana”, mentre per la stagione a venire la barca sarà nel Tirreno per la prima parte dell’anno per tornare in alto Adriatico in autunno. A sventolare sul Moro di Venezia, pezzo di storia nautica italiana e patrimonio che va condiviso, c’è anche è il guidone della Compagnia della Vela. E’ stato infatti lo storico club veneziano a sostenere il progetto di Raul Gardini grazie alla lungimiranza dell’allora presidente del circolo, Giulio Donatelli, che con tenacia, superando difficoltà e diffidenze, ha creduto nel progetto e ha guidato con fermezza la Compagnia sin quasi a sfiorare la vecchia brocca, sogno e dannazione dei più grandi velisti di ogni tempo.

Glass, sand, colour and fire. Skilled glassmakers, artists and glass designers realize true works of art in the young Antonio Seguso Artistic Glassworks. In Murano, along the Fondamenta Colleoni, at No. 7, truly unique pieces are conceived and forged thanks to the experience of professionals who have always known the art of glassmaking. Antonio Seguso, an entrepreneur who, two years ago, made the courageous decision of opening a glassworks, is the grandson of the great master Archimede Seguso, who taught him the secrets of this ancient craft, from the creation of designs to the choice and blending of colours, from processing techniques to style, from management to production.

“I was 18 - he says - when I went to the furnace with my grandfather, a prominent figure in the world of glass, in Murano and internationally, and he taught me where to look to learn, and then to learn the art of glass by myself. And it is thanks to him that I’m really passionate about this profession even if another good teacher was my father Gino, who was able to mold and refine me.” Antonio Seguso has worked with important maisons, from Tiffany to Cartier, from Valentino to Versace, and from an early age was surrounded by famous artists and designers such as Elsa Peretti, Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Paloma Picasso and Yoko Ono. Working with him at the furnace there are, among others, that Giovanni who was Archimede Seguso’s last student, and Amber Hauch, a young American artist, student of Dale Chihuly, who skillfully manages to combine her creative spirit with the centuries-old tradition of Murano glass. The company, which produces classic and modern chandeliers, fine sculptures, glass animals, glasses and vases, exports its products to Russia, the United States, Mexico and Brazil, but its works are also found in the Royal Houses of England, Spain and Thailand.

Recently, Antonio Seguso was the lead actor of the film “Master Craftsmen” promoted by Veneto Banca and will soon realize, for the children who love to visit his furnace, a comic book telling about the history of Murano glass.

Antonio Seguso ha lavorato con importanti maison da Tiffany a Cartier, da Valentino a Versace e sin da giovane era circondato da famosi artisti e designer Elsa Peretti, Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Paloma Picasso e Yoko Ono. In fornace collaborano con lui, tra gli altri, Giovanni che è l’ultimo allievo di Archimede Seguso ed Amber Hauch, artista americana allieva di Dale Chihuly che riesce abilmente a coniugare il suo spirito creativo con la secolare tradizione del vetro di Murano. L’azienda, che realizza lampadari moderni e classici, sculture di pregio, animali in vetro, bicchieri e vasi, esporta i propri prodotti in Russia, Stati Uniti, Messico e Brasile ma le sue opere si trovano nelle case reali di Inghilterra, Spagna e Thainlandia.

Di recente Antonio Seguso è stato l’attore protagonista di un film “Maestri Artigiani” promosso da Veneto Banca e a breve realizzerà per i bambini, che amano visitare la sua fornace, un giornalino per far conoscere la storia del vetro di Murano.
