A Starhotels presence in London

had long been on my wish list, but I

knew that only a hotel that reflected

our ethos would do, an elegant home away from home in harmony with the city and a worthy addition to

our international collection. Location was a prime requirement, but so

was a building with personality and charm, and the search for the right

property in the right place was long and anything but easy. Just when it seemed an impossible task, along came not one, but two! Situated

in the heart of South Kensington, one of London’s most desirable

locations, The Gore and The Pelham are quite different in style, yet both

unique, with a wealth of history and

character. Once you have discovered these two new Starhotels gems, I’m

sure you’ll love them as much as I do.

Barbara Ronchi della Rocca An expert on the history of etiquette, she has written a number of books on good manners.

She works and lives in Torino, she collaborates with several newspapers and magazines and with Rai and Mediaset television.

She is also a successful consultant for public institutions and cultural associations.

Mariangela Rossi Genoa-born but Milanese by heart, she is a well-known lifestyle journalist. A long-time collaborator of Elle magazine, she has been working for other papers and magazines, such as Il Secolo XIX and Capital, for years.

She has written several books and essays on the little pleasures in life.

Vittorio Sgarbi Among Italy’s greatest art history experts, a histrionic figure of undisputed debating ability and knowledge.

His every initiative captures the attention of the media and public at large owing to the art critic’s direct and effective communication skills.

I

hate feeling at home when I’m away. I look for a space that’s different to the domestic one. I don’t go to London to eat pizza and spaghetti. I want thrills. Seeing that my son studies at Brunel University, I stay at The Gore fairly often, because it is a hotel with great sexual charm. The rooms in Baroque-Victorian style, each one different from the other, are furnished with big beds with good springs; I find them erotic, libertine, sensual. It’s hard to find intimacy in certain rooms with the impersonal décor and coffin-like mini bars typical of the big hotel chains, because often when travelling, far from the everydayness of home, the hotel room is transformed into a love nest that reawakens desire, almost as if it manages to restore lifeblood and fantasy 24

to even the most seasoned relationship. For me, the Gore has the right context, the allure of a love nest. From the tearoom – splendid – to the restaurant – pleasant – and on to the bar, this small hotel has the virtue of standing out, especially for the way it strives to make guests feel unique, giving the illusion that the room has never been occupied by anyone before you.

The dishes, raw (it’s their specialty) and cooked fish are seasonal and served with unusual sides that the owner will be happy to recommend, are a declaration of love for the sea and its products.

On display are absolutely irresistible oysters and Venus clams, tuna in oil and anchovy fillets, to name but a few. The wine list is also extensive and varied.

The style of Pescheria Mattiucci is a find and a conquest. It is no coincidence

that many customers are regulars, and that those who have been there want to go back at least once. Entering one of their eateries, whether Via Belledonne (Naples), Via Vincenzo Monti (Milan)or in Notting Hill, is like taking a trip back in time in genuine Italian style. That’s not all however. Fish can also be bought to take home, because first and foremost, Mattiucci is a fully-fledged fish shop and Luigi and his staff provide both a take-away service and fish to cook at home. A simple but ingenious idea that has made the Pescheria a chic meeting place where the sea and tradition are ambassadors for Made in Italy at its most genuine.

Ma non solo. 1)Finocchiona (1), with the unmistakable fragance of fennel seeds, is pure Tuscan. It seems even Machiavelli (3) couldn’t get enough of it. When he was forced into a kind of exile on his lands in Chianti, he loved to leave his villa for the tavern where he would eat, drink and gamble before returning to his role of political inquisitor.

2) Bologna, a few kilometres away, is the home of mortadella (2). Its unique flavour comes from finely ground pure pork mixed with lard, lightly flavoured with spices, stuffed into a sausage skin and cooked.

3) The word “salami” appeared for the first time in 1475, in Milan - the occasion was the banquet following the wedding of Costanzo Sforza and Camilla of Aragon. However, it was due to the invention in the late 19th century of the machine that gives it the typical “grain of rice” appearance, that Milano salami (5) became famous throughout Italy.

4) Verdi (4) and Rossini were also gluttons for it, but the first recipe for prosciutto (6) dates back to the 3rd century BC, and is contained in Cato the Censor’s “De Re Rustica” on farm management. We are talking particularly about Parma Ham, produced between the Via Emilia and the River Enza.

3) La parola salame compare per la prima volta a Milano, nel 1475, in occasione del banchetto di nozze tra Costanzo Sforza e Camilla d’Aragona ma è grazie all’invenzione del “finimondo”, la macchina che conferisce la classica “grana di riso”, alla fine dell’Ottocento, che il salame Milano (5) è divenuto famoso in tutta Italia.

4) Ne andavano ghiotti anche Verdi (4) e Rossini, ma la prima ricetta del prosciutto risale al III secolo a.C ed è contenuta nel “De Re Rustica” di Catone il Censore. Parliamo in particolare del Prosciutto di Parma che per fregiarsi del marchio coronato, deve essere prodotto in quel lembo di territorio che si estende tra la via Emilia e il letto del fiume Enza.

parkling wine is the only type that can be drunk throughout a meal. The days when it was considered essentially a woman’s drink or a cocktail are long gone – many sparklers now have richness and structure more than comparable with still wines. From French champagne to the increasingly competitive Italian spumante, here are the different types that go with food: Brut (dry), Extra Brut (very dry), Pas Dosé (ultra-dry), Extra dry (dry with a hint of sweetness) and Sec (slightly sweet).

Rosé, which is very much in fashion, goes well as an aperitif, with seafood salads, fairly robust fish dishes and appetizers.

And the thorny question of flute or stem glass? The champagne coupe that featured in James Bond films until the Seventies is now only used for sweet wines. Even flutes are a bit out of fashion as although their main function is to enhance the perlage, the bubbly’s other qualities are penalized. It’s better to use large wine glasses with a slightly flared top to maximize the structure and aromas.

Dagli champagne francesi agli spumanti italiani sempre più competitivi, ecco tutte le tipologie da pasto: Brut (secco), Extra Brut (molto secco), Pas Dosé (ultra secco) o Extra dry (secco morbido) e Sec (poco dolce). Il Rosé che va tanto di moda va bene con l’aperitivo, con le insalate di mare, con piatti di pesce di discreta struttura, con gli antipasti. Sul dilemma: flûte o calice? La coppa di Champagne che fino agli anni Sessanta James Bond gustava nei film, ora si usa solo per i vini dolci. E pure le flûte sono passate un po’ di moda, perché la loro funzione principale è di valorizzare il perlage, ma le altre qualità della bollicina vengono invece penalizzate. Meglio usare dei bicchieri da vino ampi e sfasati per valorizzare struttura e profumi.

he first thing you want to ask when you meet him is how he composes his wonderful collages. He’s been asked this question hundreds of times, but Maurizio Galimberti always answers with enthusiasm, as if he himself were the first to be amazed each time by this creative act of his, so complicated and so natural at the same time. When he finds himself in front of a subject, he can immediately visualize the finished figure. “If I take 70 Polaroids, I compose the figure with 70 Polaroids, I don’t discard anything. I learned how to divide space in my head when I was a boy, when my father took me to building sites with him and made me work out how many scaffolding trestles were needed per square metre. I have this innate 36

relationship with space!” He then goes on, “In one Polaroid I could portray one face at most, with this technique I can get as close as I want” After seeing his work, Lucio Dalla told him “Galimbo, you have to cut me into pieces”. His portrait became the cover of one of Lucio’s cd’s. In effect, looking through his works you can only have the same wish, that of seeing yourself through Galimbo’s eyes. Xavier Bardem is a woodland faun, with beguiling eyes that pull you in.

Quando si trova di fronte a un soggetto ha delle vere e proprie visioni grazie alle quali immagina la figura finita. “ Se scatto 70 polaroid compongo la figura con 70 polaroid, non scarto niente. Ho imparato a dividere lo spazio con la mente da ragazzino, quando mio padre mi portava in cantiere con lui e mi faceva contare quanti cavalletti da ponteggi erano necessari per ogni metro quadrato. Ho questo rapporto

E in effetti guardando lo scorrere delle sue opere non si può non provare lo stesso desiderio, quello di vedersi con gli occhi di Galimbo. Xavier Bardem è un fauno dei boschi, con due occhi che ti agganciano, centrali e ammalianti. Benicio Del Toro, Zeus: riflessi d’argento sui capelli ondulati, filosofico e rock con il grande anello nella mano intenta nei pensieri. Julienne Moore è un fuoco rosso, che arde e infiamma... . How did this long love affair with Polaroids begin?

I began taking pictures when I was 15, totally self-taught. I used analog film, so that meant the darkroom. But I have a problem with the dark, I don’t like it. I don’t often talk about it, but I was adopted when I was 5, and the dark reminds me of the orphanage. Then I discovered Polaroids, and they opened up a new world of creative techniques and a different way of representing history and time.

Inspiration doesn’t come, it’s always there. In fact I really suffer when I’m not going around with my camera. A kind of erotic relationship develops between my Fuji Instax (Ed.’s note: the camera used for his architecture mosaics) and the city, that lasts three or four hours, but is so intense it leaves me weak … In that lapse of time I create my collages or the modified images that are another important part of my work.

Let’s talk about these manipulated images; they seem almost painted…

Here we go back to use of the Polaroid. I want to stress that the effects are not painted but created with wooden spatulas immediately the image starts to form. Obviously the manipulation is not casual, I transfer all my tension and emotions to the photo, I make my energy emerge in that place. It all happens in three minutes; it is very much a gut feeling.

New techniques?

I now have an extraordinary Leica with an equally exciting lens – a Nocti Lux developed for Stanley Kubrick at the time of Barry Lindon.

New technology means I can shoot with a Leica, upload the file onto my mobile and print on Impossible or Fuji instant film – fantastic, isn’t it? The perfect synthesis of past and future.

Parlando di città, come le arriva l’ispirazione?

L’ispirazione non arriva, c’è sempre. Infatti quando non giro con la mia macchina fotografica è una vera sofferenza.

Tra me, la mia Fuji Instax ( la macchina che usa per i mosaici di architetture, ndr) e la città si instaura una sorta di rapporto erotico, che dura tre – quattro ore, ma così intenso da lasciarmi senza forze… In questo spazio di tempo creo i miei collage o le immagini modificate, che costituiscono un’altra parte importante del mio lavoro.

Ecco queste immagini ottenute con le manipolazioni: sembrano quasi dipinte…

Qui torniamo all’uso delle

polaroid, che manipolo con dei bastoncini in legno. Mi preme sottolineare che non sono interventi pittorici, ma sono ottenuti con delle spatole di legno appena dopo lo scatto.

Naturalmente non si tratta di interventi casuali: trasporto sulla foto le mie tensioni, le mie emozioni, faccio emergere la mia energia in quel luogo. Succede tutto in tre minuti, è un lavoro molto di pancia.

Nuove progettualità?

Adesso ho un Leica straordinaria, con un obiettivo altrettanto entusiasmante: un Nocti Lux, creato per Stanley Kubrick all’epoca di Barry Lindon. Con le nuove tecnologie posso scattare con una Leica, passare il file sul mio telefonino e stampare su una pellicola istantanea Impossible o Fuji: fantastico, no?! Sintesi perfetta di passato e futuro.

The perfect blend of charm, sensuousness, delicacy and intensity. And she is also well-versed in the art of being funny. She believes acting is like playing music, finding the right tones, the right notes.

Laura Morante is a worldfamous actress. She shone as patroness of the Cannes Film Festival, after having played a brilliant role in Nanni Moretti’s La stanza del figlio, which gained the film the Golden Palm award in 2001. She worked with one of the masters of French cinema, Alain Resnais, as well as with Bertolucci, Amelio, Monicelli, Salvatores, Verdone, Mike Figgis , Vicente Aranda, José Pinheiro and Danièle Thompson. Ninety more films followed over the years. New York’s MoMA dedicated a film festival to her. And yet, she has still not added the occupation “actress” to her ID card.

Why? Why don’t you feel like an actress yet, despite such a successful career?

At first, I felt like a ballet dancer turned actress. Then, little by little, I fell in love with this job. But I still feel like a bit of an amateur actress.

Are you obsessed with perfection in your work?

I’m an enthusiastic person. I believe that being careless is of no use at all. But I’m not 44

Poi, piano piano, mi sono innamorata di questo lavoro. Ma ho sempre pensato di essere, in qualche modo, una dilettante.

E’ una perfezionista, nel suo lavoro?

Sono un’entusiasta. Penso che fare le cose ‘con la mano sinistra’, come si dice, non serve a niente. Però non sono razionale. Recitare non è una questione di razionalità, ma di musica. E’ istinto. E’ come cantare, come suonare.

Sul set che cosa è la cosa più importante?

L’emozione giusta tra gli attori. Non è importante dire bene questa o quella frase, ma l’energia emotiva, lo stato d’animo con cui la dici.

Quali sono le sue letture preferite?

What are your music tastes?

I love Ray Charles and Chet Baker: not their trumpet, but their voice. And Billie Holliday’s voice. Instead, I know very little about rock music. My daughters take care of that, they try to make me feel younger, musically speaking, now and then.

You have two lovely daughters, Eugenia and Agnese. How did you manage

being a mother and actress at the same time?

There are jobs that make it hard to be a good mother. I’ve always relied on the long gaps between one film and the next to give myself whole-heartedly to the task of motherhood.

An actress can easily work six months a year. The remaining time is devoted to reading, studying. It’s a time of strange “joblessness” that is very much compatible with family life.

I’ve been lucky, I’ve traveled a lot thanks to my job and I’ve been able to take my daughters along quite often.

Your daughter Eugenia is now working as an actress. What advice do you give her?

I simply hope she will learn from the mistake I made: I did not believe in being an actress, I pretended not to be an actress for a long time.

Amo la voce di Ray Charles, la voce di Chet Baker: non la sua tromba, proprio la sua voce. E quella di Billie Holliday. Sono invece abbastanza digiuna di rock. Ci pensano le mie figlie, ogni tanto, a ringiovanirmi un po’, musicalmente.

Lei ha due bellissime figlie, Eugenia e Agnese. Come

ha conciliato l’impegno di madre con quello di attrice?

Penso che ci siano mestieri che rendono molto più difficile essere madri presenti. Fare l’attrice, come l’ho fatto io, mantenendo lunghi spazi tra un film e l’altro, mi ha permesso di non abdicare alla maternità.

In un anno si può girare per sei mesi: il resto è un periodo di letture, di preparazione, di strana ‘disoccupazione’ che ben si concilia con la maternità.

Sono stata fortunata, ho potuto viaggiare molto, grazie al mio lavoro, e spesso ho portato le mie figlie con me.

Adesso sua figlia Eugenia fa l’attrice. Che consigli le dà?

Spero solo che si salvi dal mio errore, o meglio dal mio complesso: io per molto tempo non ho creduto di fare questo mestiere. Ho fatto finta di non essere un’attrice.

The designer tells us about next summer’s fashions Ermanno Scervino ci racconta la sua donna ideale e la moda per la prossima estate

C

reativity and craftsmanship - these are the factors behind Ermanno Scervino Maison’s dizzying climb to the top of the fashion tree. A rapid ascent, but with an equally prestigious background.

Ermanno Scervino began his career in the Seventies, working with some of Italy’s most renowned fashion and haute couture houses. In the Nineties he took the first steps towards founding his own brand.

However, it was in 2002 that together with his partner, Toni Scervino, he established a group of ateliers gathered under a single roof in Florence.

The result was the Made in Florence concept - totally made in Italy and based on

traditional know-how - and the Ermanno Scervino brand Women’s S/S 2015: what were the sources of your inspiration?

For the summer I wanted to reinvent glamour with a new femininity inspired by the charm of style icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy.

I’ve always been fascinated by the stars of the cinema, by strong, passionate heroines. I worked on contrasts between materials, from technological raffia to canvas macramè, with oversized coats and jackets and dresses with sculpted silhouettes.

How do you manage to combine past and present without falling into the trap of nostalgic reinterpretations?

My aim is to understand

Ma è nel 2000, che con il socio Toni Scervino, dà vita a Firenze a un polo di atelier raccolti in un unico spazio: nasce il made in Florence, made in Italy capillare e legato a un savoir faire di tradizione, nasce il brand Ermanno Scervino.

La donna della prossima p/e 2015: quali sono le suggestioni che l’hanno ispirata?

Per l’estate ho voluto reinventare il glamour con una nuova femminilità ispirata allo charme delle icone di stile come Jacqueline Kennedy. Sono sempre stato affascinato dalle Dive del cinema, dalle eroine forti e appassionate. Ho lavorato sul contrasto dei materiali dalla rafia tecnologica al macramè di canvas, con capispalla over e abiti dalla silhouette scolpita.

Come riesce a coniugare passato e presente, senza cedere mai a rivisitazioni nostalgiche?

Il mio obiettivo è riuscire a cogliere i trend futuri, traducendo in un linguaggio moderno e glamour

All the shades of blue, with denim, whites, sophisticated greens and black.

And the fabrics?

I’ve worked a lot on experimenting with materials: fabrics with a sporty aesthetic like canvas and raffia, bonded with chiffon, crêpe and macramé, often illuminated by crystals.

Constant research allows me to experiment with alwaysnew ideas, from lasered neoprene to double denim.

Here in Italy we have such a strong tradition that I am able to obtain results that are always original and 48

create surprising effects with materials.

Denim is back, as elegant as in the Nineties. Tell us what this material means to Ermanno Scervino?

It’s a timeless material that I love. It dominates both the men’s and women’s collections. I’ve used it in a sartorial way, as if it was one of the finest fabrics.

Who is the woman of today or the past who best embodies the spirit of the collection? She’s an international woman and a globetrotter; an urban princess.

What essentials should a woman who often travels on business have in her suitcase this winter?

A little black dress and a white shirt.

Il costante lavoro di ricerca, mi consente di sperimentare sempre nuove vie, dalle lavorazioni sul neoprene laserato al denim double.

Qui in Italia abbiamo una tradizione talmente alta che mi permette di ottenere risultati sempre nuovi con effetti materici sorprendenti.

Torna ancora il jeans,

anche elegante come negli anni’90. Ci racconti cosa rappresenta questo materiale per Emanno Scervino?

E’ un materiale immortale, che adoro. Domina la collezione uomo e anche la donna. L’ho usato in maniera sartoriale come se fosse un materiale d’eccellenza.

La donna, di oggi o del passato, che meglio incarna lo spirito della Collezione?

E’ una donna Internazionale e globetrotter: una principessa urbana.

Cosa non deve mancare nella valigia di una donna che si sposta spesso per lavoro, quest’ inverno?

Un tubino nero e una camicia bianca.

You are already thinking about the 2016 women’s collection ... can you give us a sneak preview?

I have lots of ideas; I gather inspiration all through the year. I often pick up cues in the world’s big cities, but I could change everything right up to the day before the show.

Just a hint about next summer’s style for men.

Fifties inspiration for them too?

Fluorescent accents and navy blue fleece; the men’s style I’ve envisaged for Spring/Summer 2015 is multi-coloured and relaxed.

souls: one financial and one creative, how do they work in harmony?

Toni and I function like two pieces of a puzzle, profoundly different in shape but for that very reason designed to fit together to form an unexpected picture. The result of this synergy is balance and harmony.

What does craftsmanship mean for Ermanno Scervino?

The set of values given by tradition, the art of tailoring and technical skills. My aim is to reinterpret them in a modern style while upholding excellence.

Toni e io funzioniamo come due pezzi di un puzzle, profondamente diversi nella forma ma proprio per questo pensati per combaciare, fino a comporre un quadro inaspettato. L’equilibrio e l’armonia nascono da questa unione sinergica.

Cosa significa artigianalità per Ermanno Scervino?

L’insieme di valori dati dalla tradizione, dalla sartorialità e dalle competenze tecniche.

T

he Cultural Affairs and Tourism Ministry of international tourism’s best loved country has a job as difficult as it is critical. Dario Franceschini, who has been at its head since 22 February 2014, has drawn up a schedule of reforms to relaunch the role of Cultural Affairs policies as a strategic pillar of Italian politics also on the international scene. This renewal is already underway with the implementation of innovative measures and of synergic visions, such as the recent proposal to create a railway line to further exploit places such as Reggia Caserta, Pompeii, Ercolano and Paestum.

What is the current picture of foreign tourism in Italy, what language does it speak, are new flows forming?

The contribution to the sector from international tourism in Italy in 2013 to the industry was 33 billion euro, about 1 billion over 2012. The first results for 2014 show an increase of 5.2%, even if the latest data show stagnation in the summer months.

Four regions (Lazio, Lombardy, Veneto and Tuscany) receive 60% of inbound tourism spending, while revenue in Southern Italy accounts for about 13%. Last year the 70

overall presence of Italians diminished by 7.5% against 2012, while overseas demand held firm. Inbound tourism currently generates 49% of overnight stays. Despite the growth of Russia and China, the champions of inbound tourism in Italy are still France, Germany and the USA in terms of both presence and spending.

Art and culture – are we still one of the world’s most popular destinations?

A recent survey by Condé Nast Traveller confirmed how our country is still the most sought-after destination.

Italy was ranked first among destinations, with a rating of 94.49/100, ahead of the United States (93.89) and France (92.98).

The strengths?

Cultura non significa solo arte o musei, ma anche made in Italy, territorio, musica, artigianato, enogastronomia.

Come è possibile accrescerne l’interazione e promuoverne una visione olistica?

Yes, definitely, in the same way digitalization of the industry is essential.

It is a fact that travellers’ habits and behaviours are increasingly internet-led.

Closing the digital gap in this industry is fundamental not only to relaunch our tourism, but also for tackling unregulated activities in the hotel industry. We have hundreds of small historic villages that could become “alberghi diffuse” (“scattered hotels”) and so develop a completely new, all-Italian concept of hospitality. I believe that the big hotel chains should bet

on this new and distinctly Italian formula which has met with great success where it has been tried.

Three solutions to restore appeal to the Expo 2015 project?

There is a great deal of interest in Expo 2015 around the world.

Perhaps the impact it could generate is still being underestimated here. We are organizing cultural events of the highest quality. The challenge is a single one – take the many visitors to Expo to the rest of the country.

Until 8 March 2015, an exceptional location, Milan’s Palazzo Reale, will host more than 50 masterpieces by the Dutch master, the result of priceless cooperation between prestigious international museums, as well as a number of normally inaccessible private collections. The theme of the unmissable, original exhibition, that tips the wink at Expo 2015 and from which the name of the exhibition is also taken, is “Man and the Land”, a 78

subject beloved by the Dutch artist, whose canvases often portrayed scenes of peasant life where the encounter/ clash between man and nature, marked by the rhythms of ploughing the fields, sowing and harvesting, was central.

Through world famous masterpieces, in Milan for the first time, and other original works, the exhibition traces the painter’s artistic journey, from his first approach to painting to the stylistic evolution of his art after his encounter with the Impressionism and NeoImpressionism of Seurat and Signac. His is a painting style made up of strong colours and strong, vigorous brushstrokes, a forerunner of the Expressionist movements and all the art of the 1900s. The “Marc Chagall” exhibition, on the other hand, is part of the “Milan, Heart of Europe”. The 1908-1985 retrospective is also at Palazzo Reale. With more than 220 works, it is the largest for the past 50 years in Italy devoted to the Jewish RussianFrench naturalized genius. The work exhibited go from 1908, when Chagall created his first works, to the great “Red Nude” of 1909 and up to the last of his monumental works of the ‘80s. A chronological journey leads visitors on the discovery of the artist, and presents, often for the first time, works from the private collections of his heirs, and some unpublished pieces, alongside masterpieces 80

from major museums around the world, such as the MoMa, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, as well as 50 public and private collections.

Throughout the exhibition runs the inspiratoine which Marc Chagall was able to keep intact through time, despite the vicissitudes of his life and his perennial exile. In other words, the sense of amazement, the joy of wonder in the face of nature and man and, together with them, the conviction of believing and trying in all ways to build a new world.

What comes to light is how his art is a poetic métissage of culture and traditions, where fusion equals a value and the work of art a language able to express some questions still unresolved by man today.

degli eredi, e talvolta inedite, a capolavori provenienti dai maggiori musei del mondo, quali il MoMa, il Metropolitan Museum di New York e il Museo Nazionale Russo di S. Pietroburgo, oltre a 50 collezioni pubbliche e private.

Lungo il percorso espositivo si delinea quella linea creativa che, nonostante le vicissitudini della sua esistenza e il suo perenne esilio, Marc Chagall seppe mantenere intatto attraverso il tempo.

Ovvero la forma dello stupore, la gioia della meraviglia di fronte alla natura e all’umanità e, insieme a esse, la fiducia di credere e di provare in tutti i modi a costruire un mondo migliore.

Emerge come la sua arte sia un poetico metissage fra culture e tradizioni, in cui la contaminazione equivale a un valore e l’opera d’arte un linguaggio in grado di esprimere alcuni interrogativi a tutt’oggi irrisolti dall’umanità .

ablo Picasso was born on 25 October 133 years ago. No better date, therefore, to reopen the Musée Picasso, the Paris art gallery dedicated to the Spanish artist, after 5 years of closure and numerous controversies. The building that has housed the world’s biggest collection of the artist’s works since1985 is the 18th century Hôtel Salé in the Marais quarter. In these years of closure, it has undergone substantial maintenance and renovation works which have been argued over at length, mainly for the cost of the work (56 million euro) and for delays caused by bureaucratic red tape. Today, the exhibition area has been radically modernized and enlarged to cover more than twice the original space.

5000 of the artist’s paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs and documents are housed in the museums rooms, forming one of the most extensive collections of work by the genius of 20th century figurative art.

Florence too pays tribute to Picasso with an exhibition, which has already met with notable success with the public, curated by Malaga University art historian Eugenio Carmona and housed in the Renaissance rooms (in themselves a true gem) of Palazzo Strozzi. “Picasso and Spanish Modernity” is an interesting journey through the artist’s influence on modern Spanish artists.

The 90 works were loaned by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia di Madrid collection, and concern not only Picasso but also Juan Mirò, Salvador Dalì, Juan Gris, Maria Blanchard and Julio Gonzales.

The exhibition comprises 9 sections and a film which wind through art and history, examining a moment in history, the 20th century, of particular emotive impact for Spain, witness to the tragedy of civil war. And highly emotive are the preparatory drawings, engravings and paintings for Guernica (1937) in two sections of the exhibition, none of which have been displayed outside Spain before.

Among other exhibits are celebrated masterpieces such as Picasso’s Portrait of Dora Maar (1939), the Horse’s Head and the Painter and the Model (1963), Siurana, the Path (1917) and Figure and Bird in the Night (1945) by Miró, and Dalí’s Arlequin (1927).

Two exhibitions narrate European neo avant-garde Due mostre raccontano le avanguardie europee

T

wo great Museums, whose cities overlook the water and offer a lift to the spirits every time you land there. Two great Museums with the same name and a perpetual ability to renew themselves, in their shows and their initiatives, which this autumn are dedicated to two of Europe’s most significant post World War II avant-gardes. And so on both sides of the pond, in the limpid, twilight beauty of Venice and the intense, pulsing energy of New York, Peggy Guggenheim Collection rooms and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will narrate the stories of “Azimut/h. Continuity and Newness” (curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, until 19 January 2015) and “ZERO: Countdown to Tomorrow, 1950s” (curated by Valerie Hillings until 7 January 2015). The figure of Lucio Fontana stands out in both exhibitions, even if the shows and the curators’ intentions are different, for certain they are organized around almost identical, and in some points definitely overlapping places and times. Azimut/h was the gallery and review founded in Milan in 1959 by Pietro Manzoni and Enrico 86

Castellani, and which played a central role in the Italian and international art scene of those years, thanks also to the works of artists it had ties with – Fontana, of course, and Alberto Burri, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker. Almost at the same time, those who shared the thirst for innovation of the Dusseldorf group Zero

Azimut/h fu infatti galleria e rivista, fondata a Milano nel 1959 da Pietro Manzoni ed Enrico Castellani, e riuscì a segnare in modo netto il contesto artistico italiano e internazionale di quegli anni grazie anche alle opere di quanti intorno ad Azimut/h si mossero: appunto Fontana e Alberto Burri, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene e Günther Uecker.

Quasi allo stesso tempo il Gruppo Zero mosse dalle esigenze di quanti tra il 1957 e il 1966, da Dusseldorf, riconobbero come proprie le esigenze di innovazione di Heinz Mack e Otto Piene, che nel 1961 unirono al gruppo Günther Uecker, per dar vita a ZERO, un vero e proprio network internazionale di artisti, con trait d’union primo Fontana, ma anche Klein, lo stesso Manzoni e pure Yayoi Kusama, Almir Mavignier, Jan Schoonhoven, e Jesús Rafael Soto. capsule that reconstructs the first instants of a concept of art that reaches us today, making the visitor a party to the power of the imaginative, artistic network that developed from it. Indeed, it was here that a “break without compromises” was made with post-war Italy, a fracture that in the show takes the Dadaist shape of Manzoni’s famous ‘Artist’s Shit’, a selection of Achromes - his wrinkled canvas and kaolin monochromes - and his Magic Base - ‘Living Sculpture’ (1961) – anyone who climbs onto it must be considered a work of art (and visitors can try it out themselves). The works brought together by Azimuth saw attention moving from the artist to the spectators, making them essential in 88

the interpretation of light, movement and time.The New York exhibition features the works of more than 40 artists from 10 countries.

The exhibition is organized around the points of intersection, exchange, and collaboration that defined ZERO artists’ shared history; they redefined painting and reintroduced movement and light as the basic idea of art, while space became subject and material in the production of live actions or demonstrations.

High fashion on show in three exhibitions in Europe and the United States L’alta moda in mostra in tre esposizioni tra Europa e Stati Uniti

I

talian and French fashion are the undisputed protagonists of two important European museums in Rome and Paris, and of three American museums which will host a touring exhibition curated by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. From Christian Dior to Pierre Cardin by way of the Fontana sisters, Gattinoni and Valentino. Forget the war; launch a new way of conceiving fashion, transforming the art of dressing into haute couture.

And so it was with the metres of material in Christian Dior’s “corolla” skirts that Paris emerged as the capital of fashion.

Celebrating that moment and those years, from 1947 to 1957, is the aim of the “Les Années 50 – La mode en France 1947-1957” exhibition at the Palais Galliera in Paris. The exhibition retraces the renaissance of femininity and frivolity after the austerity imposed by the war years, and flanks that of Christian Dior with the undisputed genius of Yves Saint Laurent.

This newly romantic fashion was made up of high-waisted skirts, strapless sheath dresses, striped and floral pattern prints, little hats, gloves, bags and stiletto heels, skilfully designed and created by masters of fashion such as Balenciaga and Hubert de Givenchy.

At the same time, a new need emerged, that for ready to wear, of which Coco Chanel would become a leader with her jersey suits, masculine cardigans and shoulder bags that left the hands free, all clothes that expressed a need for wearable, practical elegance.

These were also important years for Italian fashion, celebrated with the “Italian Style: Fashion Since 1945” touring exhibition put together at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where it was on for several months, and which will travel to the United States, to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Portland Art Museum, Oregon (7 February– 3 May 2015) and then to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville (5 June – 7 September 2015). The exhibition consists of around 100 ensembles and accessories by leading Italian fashion houses including Gucci, Prada, Versace, Valentino, Armani, Fendi, Pucci, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, through to the next generation of fashion talent. Divided into five sections, the exhibition celebrates the uniqueness of the Italian fashion industry through the factors that have made it world famous – its use of the finest materials, its strongly regional element,

In particular, the exhibition highlights the enormous impact of the many Hollywood films that were shot on location in Italy during the Fifties and Sixties. Years when celebrities like Audrey Hepburn, Lee Radziwill, Maria Callas and Elizabeth Taylor became style ambassadors for Italian fashion, fuelling a keen international appetite for luxurious clothing and jewellery made in Italy.

Finally,“Bellissima - L’Italia dell’alta moda 1945-1968” at Fondazione Maxxi in Rome.

The exhibition includes the white lace dress designed by Fernanda Gattinoni for Ingrid Bergman in Roberto Rossellini’s “Europa 51”, the black silk one, also by Gattinoni, worn by Anna Magnani in the segment of the film “Siamo Donne” directed by Luchino Visconti, a spectacular red carpet dress by the Fontana sisters for Liz Taylor (1954) .

Also on display to emphasise the link between art and fashion will be paintings, tapestries, ceramics and sculptures by Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Paolo Scheggi and Massimo Campigli. Curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, Anna Mattirolo and Stefano Tonchi, the exhibition will end on 3 May 2015.

ellissima. Italy and High Fashion 19451968 is a critical interpretation, using a modern day filter to look at Italian fashion in a seminal period of our country’s history. It is not the story of high fashion, but rather an attempt to recreate the complex, changing geography of Italian fashion (…) Bellissima is a project consisting of an exhibition and a book, both independent and complementary.(…) Bellissima is Luchino Visconti’s 1951 film starring Anna Mangnani in one of her most intense roles.

But “bellissima” is also the word for feminine beauty all over the world, it is that Italian lifestyle the Americans helped us develop in the post-war years through the actions of the Marshall Plan. A spectacular kaleidoscope of lax, laid-back, 96

disorganized ambiances, of sex and sweet idleness. For the curators, 1945-1968 is the intense period that swung between the rebuilding of a country from the rubble of the war and the radical erosion of the system of values created in those years. It is the Italy of high fashion and the journey of fashion in Italy. A sort of topography that is also the origin of our country’s present fashion industry.(…) An historic place is being used to explore and understand recent developments in fashion, and credit the creators of Italian high fashion, along with all the other players who acted parts not yet written in those years, with the development of an Italian model open to the most diverse influences and matrix of that still unique, unrepeatable luxury ready to wear.

‘Bellissima’ è il film di Luchino Visconti del 1951 che fissa Anna Magnani in una delle sue parti più intense (…). Ma “bellissima” è anche quella parola che in tutto il mondo indica la bellezza femminile, è quell’Italian way of lifestyle che gli americani ci hanno aiutato a mettere a punto nel Dopoguerra, attraverso le azioni (esplicite e implicite) del piano Marshall. Uno spettacolare caleidoscopio di atmosfere molli, rilassate, disorganizzate, di sesso e dolce far niente.

1945-1968 è, per i curatori, il periodo lungo e compresso che oscilla tra la ricostruzione di un paese sulle macerie della guerra e la radicale messa in crisi del sistema di valori costruito in quegli anni. È il momento in cui la moda si articola tra caratteri personali e qualità collettive. È l’Italia dell’alta moda e insieme è anche il viaggio della moda in Italia.

In una sorta di topografia che è anche la genesi dell’attuale fashion system del nostro paese (…).

Utilizzare allora uno spazio storico per esplorare e capire gli sviluppi recenti della moda. Riconoscendo così agli autori dell’alta moda italiana, insieme a tutti gli altri attori che in quegli anni hanno recitato parti non ancora scritte, la messa a fuoco di un modello italiano poroso alle suggestioni più diverse e matrice di quel prêtà-porter di lusso ancora unico e irripetibile.

nce more, Massimo Listri goes to the heart of great art: after Florence and the White Room at Palazzo Pitti, here is Rome, in the Hellenic perfection of the PioClementino Museum. This is a “mirror” exhibition, where the places are both the setting and subject of the 20 monumental works on show: the Octagonal Courtyard, the Sala delle Muse – a red amphitheatre-like space dotted with statues – the Sala Rotonda. by Antonio Paolucci, who chose Listri’s expert eye to illustrate a fascinating journey through the Vatican Museum’s ancient collection of classical archaeology. Listri is the photographer who invented beauty: Vittorio Sgarbi has said so for a long time.

aolo Bordogna is Italian opera’s trump card, one of the new generation’s best comic bass-baritones. Not only does he have a powerful, very adaptable voice, he is an amazing actor. Born in Milan in 1972, he has the right physique for his roles, a sharp mind, artistic sensitivity and a wealth of innate talent, yet still studies tirelessly.

International festivals compete to have him, as do the major Italian and overseas theatres, from the Opéra Bastille to the Sydney Opera House, the Washington National Opera and the Scala. The release of his new CD of arias from the comic repertoire, recorded with Parma’s Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic, is 102

keenly awaited. Produced by the Decca label, distributed

by Universal and due out in February or March 2015, it is an absolute rarity that traces the story of Italian Opera Buffa from Cimarosa to Nino Rota and Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi of course, as well as great masters of the 1900s such as Puccini and Mascagni. Decca had not recorded a solo album by an Italian baritone for 30 years.

What is your earliest musical memory?

A lullaby my mother used to sing to me. Funnily enough, I came across the same melody in The Barber of Seville, where the two lovers, Rosina and the Count sing the aria A mezzanotte in punto, and every time I hear the intro – and I’ve sung the

What the most valuable lesson your teachers taught you?

I’m very grateful that I had strict teachers, including my teacher at the Milan Conservatory and Katia Ricciarelli in the years I studied at her academy.

What does luck mean in the opera world?

Finding the right person at the right time, but if you don’t have an iron will, you’re not going to get anywhere.

And what about studying?

Two things are important for the voice, constant study and strange as it may seem, the opposite, rest – almost total silence after a performance.

The Italian of opera is a very powerful way to spread our culture throughout the world, something that deserves to be cultivated, communicated and cherished like a valuable asset!

You are already booked to perform in a dozen operas in Italian and international theatres in the next two years. Is there a project that is particularly important to you?

Not only every single opera, but every single performance is extremely important to me, otherwise I could not do this job.

“buffo” italiano. Dico abbiamo, perché sono stato affiancato in questo lavoro poderoso e

impegnativo da un’orchestra di grande valore, la Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini di Parma,

diretta da Francesco Lanzillotta, un organico di qualità sonora davvero molto elevata e

di grande competenza nel repertorio operistico.

T

he elegant calm of Reggio Emilia province, the good taste that clothes every corner, the widespread sense of an extremely high quality of life. One enters Parma as if it were a small, unique world. A splendid art city where food is an aspect of the culture, almost of erudition.

Melodrama runs in its veins, in the same way the music played in nearly every house flows through every alley.

Its citizens are among the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable connoisseurs of opera in the world. Giuseppe Verdi, born a few kilometres away, is their god. Parma has one of northern Italy’s most beautiful theatres, the Teatro Regio (via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 16/a - tel. 0521 039393), forever one of the most feared testing grounds for opera singers.

Here the failure of an opera can be even more clamorous. Every autumn, around 10 October, Giuseppe Verdi’s birth date, the Regio hosts the Festival Verdi: a whole month of Verdi’s music.

This is also the birthplace of Arturo Toscanini. Nowadays, the house where he was born, in the working class Oltretorrente district, is a House-Museum open to the public (Borgo Rodolfo Tanzi, 13 - tel. 0521 285499).

Garibaldi, is the former Royal Music School, now the Arrigo Boito Music Conservatory (via del Conservatorio 27/b - tel. 0521 381911), where Toscanini studied the cello. Having become an internationally famous conductor in just a few years, Toscanini held unforgettable concerts in Parma between 1900 and 1921.

Recente è anche la Casa della Musica (piazzale San Francesco, 1 - tel. 0521 031150), nata nel quattrocentesco Palazzo Cusani e sede di convegni, incontri, corsi, concerti, biblioteca e mediateca, tutti aperti al pubblico.

Parco Ducale - Parma Familiarly known to the citizens of Parma as “the garden”, it is situated right in the city centre and directly connected by a little bridge to the Du Parc hotel. The 21 hectare Parco Ducale owes it origin to Duke Ottavio Farnese, who in 1561 ordered architect Giovanni Boscoli to create an Italian garden.

Its 3 kilometres of green architecture are an open air museum to stroll through.

Royal Gardens - Venice Situated in the San Marco quarter, a short walk from the Piazza and the Splendid Venice, these gardens are an unexpected green refuge in the heart of Venice.

Laid out next to the Royal Palace on the order of Napoleon, these gardens, with the Coffee House – a small cupola-topped pavilion designed by architect Lorenzo Santi – create a fascinating link between bell towers, bridges and palaces famous worldwide.

It was originally a hunting estate and farm to supply the Medici family, and the pyramid-shaped ice-houses that supplied their sumptuous tables with the famous sorbets can still be seen. n Turin, a short stroll through the piazzas and porticos of the town centre is an adventure for the soul and taste, where spiritual and material pleasures go hand in hand. In fact, the most renowned cafes are to be found next to the city’s main churches – after Mass, Turin’s devout citizens once enjoyed a “bicerin”, a drink of coffee, chocolate and milk served in a glass. Al bicerin is the actual name of the coffee shop opened in 1763 opposite the Santuario della Consolata, and still very well frequented. In Piazza Castello there is a little Art Nouveau jewel, the Mulassano, with a window dressed with heavy, red velvet curtains which were closed only when members of the Royal Family entered, to ensure their privacy. The 112

first cocktails arrived here in 1925 (the recipe for the “house special” is still a secret), and the “tramezzino” (sandwich) so-called by D’Annunzio, was invented. Right alongside begins Via Po, built in 1819 so the King could walk from the Palazzo Reale to the river under the cover of the uninterrupted arcades on the left side. The right side, with a wealth of elegant shops, was called the side of “the cuckolds” and the cocottes.

Here stands the famous café Florio, frequented since the late 18th century by the city’s political elite. Its undisputed specialties are its ice-creams and cakes. Via Po emerges into Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a true architectural prodigy which manages to “disguise” the good 7.19 metres difference in ground level with houses

A Torino, una breve passeggiata in centro, tra piazze e portici, si rivela un’avventura dell’anima e del gusto, dove piacere spirituale e materiale vanno a braccetto.

I caffè più rinomati si trovano infatti accanto alle principali chiese cittadine: dopo la Messa i devoti torinesi si gustavano un “bicerin”, bevanda a base di caffé, cioccolata e latte, servita in bicchiere. Si chiama proprio Al bicerin la bottega del caffè aperta nel 1763 di fronte al Santuario della Consolata, e tutt’ora frequentatissima.

In piazza Castello c’è un piccolo gioiello Liberty, il Mulassano, con la vetrina guarnita da pesanti tendaggi di velluto rosso, che venivano chiusi solo quando entravano i membri della Famiglia Reale, per garantirne la privacy.

Qui nel 1925 arrivarono i primi cocktail (la ricetta di quello “della casa” è tutt’ora segreta) e fu inventato il “tramezzino”, battezzato così da D’Annunzio.

Proprio lì accanto inizia Via Po, costruita nel 1819 perché il Re potesse passeggiare al coperto da Palazzo Reale al fiume, grazie ai portici ininterrotti sul lato sinistro.

Il lato destro, ricco di negozi eleganti, era detto “dei cornuti” e delle cocottes.

Qui sorge il famoso caffè Florio, frequentato sin dal tardo 700 dall’élite politica cittadina. Specialità indiscusse, i gelati e le torte.
