passes the milestone of its 20th year and dives

back into the troubled waters of the textile-clothing industry.

Once we would have added “Italian”, but the globalization process and our

attendance to many international trade shows allows us now to use the term “worldwide”. London, Florence, Milan, Paris and Frankfurt are the places we travelled to in 2017 to tell our readers about entrepreneurs and companies, market trends and the latest production and innovation developments.

In November, we celebrated our first 20 years of activity, as both La Spola and Gruppo Editoriale, in our double role as publishing firm and website, while in December, in an awful twist of fate, we had to say goodbye to our editor-in-chief Guido Parigi Bini, to whom we dedicate this Showcase issue: he wrote the magazine’s first leading article and he wrote the leading article of the special “20 years” number. His passing comes as a great loss for the whole of Tuscan journalism.

Speaking of Tuscany, two of the people interviewed in this issue reached an excellent position in our region: Claudio Marenzi who, after an experience at the helm of Sistema Moda Italia, is now at the head of Pitti Immagine, and Alessio Marco Ranaldo, a thirty-year-old textile entrepreneur who currently leads Confindustria Toscana. We also talked to dozens of people working in companies and associations in every link of the textile chain, including both well-established and newborn companies, the latter being the result of daring entrepreneurial initiative.

Then, as usual, we provide an insight into the trade shows for which, after the shake-up caused by the change of schedule in 2017, things are going back to normal, although more new developments seem looming on the horizon.

Our new magazine issue closes, as always, with some culinary tips to provide the thousands of people attending trade fairs, workshops and events far away from home with some useful after-show dining options. This time, we take you on a tour of the top fish and seafood restaurants in Florence, Milan and Paris.

Con questo Showcase La Spola gira la boa dei 20 anni e si rituffa nel mare non sempre calmo del tessile-abbigliamento. Una volta avremmo aggiunto “italiano” ma ormai la globalizzazione e la presenza a tante fiere internazionali ci consente di scrivere “mondiale”. Londra, Firenze, Milano, Parigi, Francoforte e Shanghai i luoghi che nel 2017 ci hanno visti presenti per raccontare storie di imprenditori e aziende, andamenti dei mercati, novità in produzione e innovazione.

A novembre abbiamo festeggiato i primi 20 anni di attività, sia come La Spola che come Gruppo Editoriale, da sempre editore di rivista e sito web, a dicembre invece, per un amaro scherzo del destino, abbiamo salutato per sempre il nostro direttore Guido Parigi Bini, al quale è dedicato questo Showcase: fu lui a firmare il primo editoriale nel 1997, è stato lui a firmare l’editoriale sullo speciale “20 anni” e con lui se ne va una parte importante del giornalismo toscano.

E proprio in Toscana hanno trovato ruoli importanti due degli intervistati: Claudio Marenzi, che dopo l’esperienza alla guida di Sistema Moda Italia adesso è il numero uno di Pitti Immagine, e Alessio Marco Ranaldo, un imprenditore tessile poco più che trentenne alla guida di Confindustria Toscana. Proseguiamo con una dozzina di testimonianze aziendali e associative di ogni anello della filiera, tra realtà storiche ed altre appena nate, frutto di coraggiose scelte imprenditoriali. Poi il consueto sguardo alle fiere, che dopo gli scossoni nei calendari durante l’anno appena concluso, sembrano aver trovato un ritmo omogeneo, anche se le novità all’orizzonte potrebbero non mancare.

Chiudiamo il numero come sempre con alcuni consigli ‘gastronomici’ per aiutare le migliaia di persone che, proprio per partecipare a fiere, workshop e saloni, sono sempre più spesso impegnate lontano dall’azienda: stavolta la mini guida è sui ristoranti di pesce a Firenze, Milano e Parigi.

2018, an even-numbered year. If once this could only mean more trade shows across the world, now the distinction between even and odd-numbered years doesn’t make much sense anymore: the trade fair calendar has changed, some shows have disappeared, some have modified their schedule, others have joined forces. Actually, while waiting for ITMA 2019, everything is within the norm and, thus, in this Showcase issue, we will be dealing with the great “classics” of the European trade show scene.

At time of print release, two major non-Italian shows have already taken place: Heimtextil in Frankfurt and The London Textil Fair. So, while in Italy all eyes were on Pitti Uomo, Germany and France opened the new trade fair season, which was really crammed with events in 2017. The home textiles German show was hosted at Messe Frankfurt and attended by exhibitors from all over the world, with Europe proving to be as competitive in some fields (technical fabrics, upholstery and drapery) as Asia in others (carpeting), while in London figures demonstrated that the English show falls in the right place on the calendar. As usual, Showcase starts its trade show tour at Pitti Filati, in its 82nd season: a knitwear yarn show but also concept lab and global trends platform, Pitti Filati focuses on research, with companies introducing the world preview of their spring/summer 2019 collections. The new research space is RAW, which is also the theme of the 2019 S/S season, while the theme of Pitti Immagine’s winter show is cinema, with Pitti Live Movie, the red thread connecting this event with Pitti Uomo and Pitti Bimbo.

KnitClub, the section reserved for quality knitwear producers, is back, while at Fashion at Work, the offerings by Italian and foreign exhibitors that deal with design and stylistic, technical and production consulting, will be richer than ever. Pitti Filati is held at the same time as Vintage Selection: in its 31st season and based on “The Next Past” theme, the show will be held at Stazione Leopolda from January 24 to 28.

Se una volta questo significava più fiere in giro per il mondo ormai questa distinzione con gli anni dispari non ha più molto senso: i calendari sono cambiati, alcune fiere sono sparite, altre hanno modificato la periodicità, altre ancora hanno unito gli sforzi. Di fatto, in attesa di Itma 2019, tutto rimane nella norma e quindi in questo numero di Showcase ci occuperemo dei ‘grandi classici’ del panorama fieristico europeo.

Andiamo in stampa dopo due importanti eventi extra-Italia: Heimtextil a Francoforte e The London Textil Fair. Sono state quindi Germania e Francia, mentre in Italia gli occhi di tutti erano rivolti a Pitti Uomo, ad inaugurare il nuovo calendario fieristico, che nel 2017 ha avuto davvero pochi spazi liberi. La fiera tedesca del tessile per la casa è tornata a riempire le sale della Messe Frankfurt con espositori in arrivo da tutto il mondo, con la tradizione europea in alcuni settori (tecnici, arredamento, tendaggi) che è andata a braccetto con quella asiatica in altri (tappeti) mentre a Londra i numeri hanno confermato il fatto che la fiera inglese ha trovato la sua giusta collocazione temporale.

Showcase debutta, come al solito, a Pitti Filati, arrivata all’82’ edizione: salone di filati per maglieria ma anche concept lab e piattaforma per le tendenze globali, Pitti Filati punta sulla ricerca, con le aziende che presentano l’anteprima mondiale primavera/estate 2019. Il nuovo spazio ricerca è RAW, che è il tema della PE 2019, mentre quello di Pitti Immagine versione invernale è il cinema, con Pitti Live Movie, il fil rouge che collega questo evento a Pitti Uomo e Pitti Bimbo.

Confermato il KnitClub, l’area riservata ai maglifici di qualità, mentre a Fashion at Work l’offerta di espositori italiani e stranieri impegnati in progettazione e consulenze stilistiche, tecniche e produttive sarà ancora più ricca. Ovviamente non manca l’abbinamento con la Vintage Selection: la numero 31, chiamata “The Next Past”, si svolge alla Stazione Leopolda dal 24 al 28 gennaio.

Pitti Filati On our way to Milano Unica, we take a detour to visit Munich Fabric Start, which follows the trend adopted by other trade shows before by combining fabrics and clothing with Munich Apparel Source which, however, will have its second show held only in September. In February, the show will be featuring only fabrics and denim and brings its figures back to normal level after a period of huge growth in the past few years: companies and agencies working side by side to protect a market which is not as rosy as it used to be but important all the same, especially if weather conditions bring lower temperatures back.

Instead, Milano Unica will be facing an “acid test” following the successful results of the last July show, which was held ahead of schedule. It is impossible, for a number of reasons, to bring forward the winter show too, so the collections of the major Italian and European textile manufacturers saloni ha pensato di abbinare ai tessuti anche l’abbigliamento aprendo Munich Apparel Source, che però vedrà svolgere solo a settembre la sua seconda edizione. A febbraio spazio solo per tessuti e denim con numeri ormai stabilizzati dopo la grande crescita di metà degli anni scorsi: aziende e agenzie di rappresentanza al lavoro fianco a fianco per presidiare un mercato non brillante come un tempo ma sicuramente importante, soprattutto se le condizioni meteo riporteranno temperature più rigide.

Milano Unica invece deve superare la prova del nove dopo il grande successo dell’anticipo dello scorso luglio. Impossibile per tanti motivi anticipare anche l’edizione invernale e quindi le collezioni delle principali aziende produttrici di tessuto in Italia ed in Europa saranno quindi negli stand con una settimana di anticipo rispetto a Première Vision e quindi i numeri strabilianti di luglio potrebbero essere ritoccati al ribasso, anche perché la collezione estiva è da sempre quella meno accattivante per alcuni clienti ed anche per le aziende stesse. will be showcased one week earlier than Première Vision. Therefore, the astounding figures reported in July may drop substantially, merely because the summer collections have always been less attractive to some customers and to the companies as well. In Rho, the show will join forces with Filo for a concerted presentation of trends: a sort of “year zero” of the project of introducing trends together, which was announced a few months ago.

The news of this year’s trade show calendar is Texworld starting one day ahead, on Sunday rather than on Monday as usual. Two days earlier than Première Vision and, above all, one week before the Chinese New Year, which is the holiday that affects Le Bourget’s attendance figures more than any other. The organizers of Messe Frankfurt aim to help the Chinese and, in general, Oriental visitors, by allowing them to attend the show without worrying about making it back home in time for New Year’s Eve. Only figures will prove them right or wrong. Of course, along with Texworld come Apparel Sourcing, Avantex and Shawls & Scarves.

At the same time, Première Vision Paris will put on a show of all its certainties in terms of quality and quantity: in addition to the textile, accessory, leather, design and prints and clothing fairs, a number of off-show events, from Wearable Lab (Hall 6) to Bag & Shoe and Maison d’Exceptions. PV keeps going its own way without hesitation, as far as both the show’s layout and timetable are concerned, sure of the successful results of the Blossom show, in both the summer and winter versions. The pre-collections introduced downtown Paris represent an added value which Première Vision can profitably make use of during both the main show and those held abroad.

Our tour ends with Filo, with Great Britain as the country-market in focus and the star of a sort of specific incoming of high-end customers. Furthermore, exhibition spaces at Palazzo delle Stelline have been extended by using the big central “conservatory” to its full capacity and by moving the stands in the outside corridor closer to the large windows. di filiera unita con la presentazione congiunta delle tendenze con Filo; una sorta di “anno zero” del progetto di abbinamento dei trend annunciato qualche mese fa.

La novità più grande di questa tornata fieristica è forse l’anticipo di Texworld, che inizia di domenica anziché di lunedì, come suo solito. Due giorni prima rispetto a Première Vision ma soprattutto una settimana scarsa prima del Capodanno Cinese, che è la ricorrenza che più di altre incide nel numero di espositori e di visitatori al centro di Le Bourget. Messe Frankfurt ha voluto consentire ai cinesi e agli orientali in genere, il ‘cuore’ della fiera, di essere presenti a Parigi senza l’assillo del calendario. Saranno i numeri a dire se la scelta è stata azzeccata. Ovviamente con Texworld anticipano anche Apparel Sourcing, Avantex e Shawls & Scarves.

A pochi chilometri di distanza Première Vision Paris mette in campo tutte le sue certezze in qualità e quantità: accanto ai saloni su tessuti, accessori, pelle, disegno e stampa, e abbigliamento tornano anche le varie iniziative collaterali, dal Wearable Lab (Hall 6) a Bag & Shoe e Maison d’Exceptions. PV va avanti senza tentennamenti sia sull’impostazione della fiera che sulla tempistica, forte anche del successo di Blossom nelle due versioni, estiva e invernale. Le precollezioni presentate in pieno centro città sono infatti un valore aggiunto che Première Vision sa far valere sia in occasione della fiera principale che nelle sue edizioni estere.

Chiusura con Filo, che in questo febbraio fa debuttare il Focus Paese con la Gran Bretagna protagonista di una sorta di incoming specifico di clienti di prima fascia. In più al Palazzo delle Stelline gli spazi sono più ampi, con l’utilizzo completo della grande ‘serra’ centrale e lo spostamento a ridosso delle vetrate degli stand nel corridoio perimetrale.

A born-and-bred Northern Italian in the heart of Tuscany, a pragmatic businessman in the cradle of Renaissance art, an entrepreneur in the homeland of craftsmanship. Not to mention the fact that he is a Juventus football club fan in the home of the Fiorentina team…If we were hunting for contradictions and inconsistencies in Claudio Marenzi as president of Pitti Immagine, we could dispense one cliché after another, but the time of territorial, category and economic divisions and factions is finally over, especially since Marenzi and Minister Carlo Calenda (and others) have been negotiating to bring Milan and Florence together in the fashion field, with Rome serving as support.

Marenzi- Piedmontese by birth, the seven-year president of Herno, five-year president of Sistema Moda Italia (in March, Marino Vago will be taking his place), one-year president of Pitti Immagine and ten-month president of Confindustria Moda- , is able to manage all these different roles as if they were apps installed on a tablet and used according to needs. Luckily enough, the needs of all the above-mentioned organizations usually coincide, as they all deal with the same issues: fashion, economy, public events.

We met with him for our Showcase interview in one of his “multipurpose” moments: the opening of Pitti Uomo 93, where Marenzi played the host, as well as attending the show as entrepreneur and exhibitor and, in his “political” role as head of SMI, he praised the work done by Minister Calenda, the effectiveness of the 4.0 Industry Plan and the importance of the Fashion Table.

Could your arrival in Florence be described as the completion of the process of Florence and Milan moving closer and joining forces, which Minister Calenda has been requesting for years now?

Yes, we are definitely on the same side now. It is important to understand that when we say “men’s fashion week” we are not referring to the Milan or to the Florence week, but to the Italian week, consisting of three days and a half in Milan and three days Un settentrionale doc nel cuore della Toscana rinascimentale, un pragmatico uomo di affari nella culla dell'arte, un imprenditore nella patria dell'artigianato. Per non aggiungere uno juventino in terra viola... Se uno volesse cercare delle contraddizioni o delle storture nella presidenza di Pitti Immagine di Claudio Marenzi potrebbe attaccarsi ai luoghi comuni e ne troverebbe più di una, ma il tempo delle divisioni territoriali, di categoria e di economie sono finiti da tempo, sicuramente da quando Marenzi e il ministro Carlo Calenda (e altri) hanno avviato il progetto per rendere Milano e Firenze un corpo solo se si pensa alla moda, con Roma a fare da supporto.

Marenzi, piemontese, presidente di Herno da sette anni, di Sistema Moda Italia da cinque (a marzo sarà sostituito da Marino Vago), di Pitti Immagine da uno e di Confindustria Moda da dieci mesi ha la capacità di riuscire a gestire queste cariche come se fosse un tablet sul quale sono state installate applicazioni da attivare a seconda delle situazioni. Per sua fortuna molto spesso le situazioni stesse sono coincidenti, anche perchè l'ambito è, altrettanto spesso, il medesimo: moda, economia, eventi pubblici.

L'abbiamo incontrato per Showcase proprio in una di questi momenti 'polivalenti', l'inaugurazione di Pitti Uomo 93, dove il Marenzi padrone di casa si è auto-abbinato al Marenzi imprenditore, che ha ricordato l'importanza della filiera, e al Marenzi 'politico' di SMI che ha lodato l'operato del ministro Calenda, la bontà del progetto Industria 4.0 e l'importanza del Tavolo della Moda.

Possiamo dire che il suo arrivo a Firenze è il compimento di un processo di avvicinamento e unione di intenti con Milano tanto richiesto anche dal ministro Calenda ormai da anni?

Ormai siamo in totale allineamento. Bisogna capire che quando parliamo di settimana della moda maschile non si parla più di settimana milanese o fiorentina ma di settimana italiana, fatta da tre giorni e mezzo a Milano e tre giorni e mezzo a Firenze. E' fondamentale per la tenuta del sistema italiano della moda.

and a half in Florence. This is crucial to the strength of the Italian fashion system.

Will your presidency be in keeping with the direction of your predecessor, Gaetano Marzotto, or should we expect changes very soon?

Absolutely in keeping. Even Minister Calenda said that we have to continue the work done so far, although we need to realize that things are changing and that we have to have a flexible approach.

All the textile trade shows are changing their schedule. How may these changes affect the Pitti Immagine shows or do you plan to go your own way by sticking to the traditional dates?

For the time being, the schedule change does not interfere with Pitti Immagine in any way, the next shows have already been scheduled. But, again, we have to have a flexible approach, so we cannot rule out the possibility that we may have to change our dates in the future.

When Undersecretary Calenda “burst” onto the textile-clothing scene, Milano Unica and the Italian trade show system challenged Première Vision by inviting the French show to join forces to hold one big single show. Then it all ended up with Milano Unica making the decision to bring forward to July the date of its show. Was it the right choice?

As president of Sistema Moda Italia and, thus, having played an active role in the process, I believe that we did the right thing by breaking free from Première Vision. It was a clever move and we have to thank the president of Milano Unica, Ercole Botto Poala, Che testimone ha raccolto da Gaetano Marzotto? La sua presidenza sarà in continuità col predecessore o dobbiamo attenderci cambiamenti di linea?

Totalmente in continuità. Lo ha detto anche il ministro Calenda che bisogna continuare il lavoro iniziato pur capendo che le cose cambiano e che quindi c'è necessità di essere anche flessibili.

Tutte le fiere del tessile abbigliamento stanno cambiando le date. Quanto questi cambiamenti possono influire sui saloni di Pitti Immagine o quanto invece pensate di andare avanti sulla vostra strada mantenendo le date tradizionali?

Per il momento non influiscono, le prossime edizioni sono già fissate, ma anche in questo caso bisogna essere flessibili e quindi non è escluso che in futuro qualche cambiamento potrà arrivare anche per le date dei nostri saloni.

Quando Calenda 'irruppe' come sottosegretario nel mondo del tessile abbigliamento venne quasi lanciata una sfida a Première Vision da parte di Milano Unica e del sistema fieristico italiano, che avrebbe dovuto unirsi per arrivare ad un grade e unico evento di tutto l'indotto. Poi invece è finita che è stata Milano Unica a prendere la decisione più forte anticipando a luglio. Scelta giusta?

Parlando da presidente di Sistema Moda Italia e quindi da parte attiva nel processo che ha portato alla scelta dico che ci siamo smarcati e abbiamo fatto bene. E' stata una mossa vincente e di questo dobbiamo ringraziare il presidente di Milano Unica Ercole Botto Poala perchè ha avuto la vista lunga e ha fatto molto bene.

Minister Calenda played a crucial role, from the initial input to the opening of the Fashion and Confindustria Moda Table….

With Calenda I experienced four years of unprecedented collaboration, which had never happened with the previous governments.

We have to give him the credit for it. He defended the textile industry’s dignity, he implemented the internationalization process through the work of the ICE Agency and the Ministry for Economic Development. The 4.0 Industry Plan allowed us to invest in our companies and have a path to follow. Digitization, for instance, is a process that needs to be on every strategy agenda in order not to fall behind our competitors.

What is the condition of Italy’s fashion industry?

Figures are in line with those reported for other sectors. 2017 closed with a slight increase in sales and, as far as exports are concerned, we have good news from Germany, China and Korea, whereas the United States and Japan are still struggling.

Nonetheless, China, in spite of its growth and development, still accounts for one third of the value of the US. Digital growth is proceeding at a fast pace. Pitti was the first trade show to provide a virtual version and serves as an example for all the other fashion trade shows. The two cornerstones in the fashion world are Paris and Italy, with Milan for womenswear and Florence-Milan for menswear. Italy is the only country that can rely on a complete production chain and in this it differs from all the other world-leading fashion producers. France can be considered as Italy’s equal in terms of quality and value, as it owns the big luxury brands, but there is no question that only Italy can produce a garment from thread to hanger.

Il ruolo del ministro Calenda è stato determinante, dagli input iniziali alla realizzazione del Tavolo della Moda e di Confindustria Moda...

Con lui ho vissuto quattro anni di collaborazione senza precedenti negli altri governi precedenti. Bisogna dargliene atto. E’ stata data dignità al settore tessile, è stata implementata molto l’internazionalizzazione grazie al lavoro di ICE Agenzia e del Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico e il piano Industria 4.0 ci ha permesso di investire nelle nostre aziende e di avere una direzione da seguire. La digitalizzazione è, per esempio, una strada che andava intrapresa per non rimanere indietro.

Qual è lo stato di salute del settore moda in Italia?

I dati sono in linea con quelli generali anche di altri settori. Nel 2017 dovremmo aver chiuso con un piccolo incremento dei fatturati e per quanto riguarda l'export abbiamo avuto numeri positivi da Germania, Cina e Corea, mentre Stati Uniti e Giappone restano ancora in una fase negativa.

Ma bisogna contestualizzare le cifre perché la Cina, nonostante la crescita e lo sviluppo, è ancora un terzo del valore degli USA. Continua intanto anche la crescita del digitale ed in questo senso c’è da dire che Pitti è stato il primo salone a dotarsi di una sua versione virtuale e può essere preso d’esempio da tutti gli altri saloni della moda. I due punti fermi per la moda nel mondo si confermano Parigi e l'Italia, con Milano per la moda donna e Firenze-Milano per quella uomo.

Tintoria Renzo Silli, Conservatori contemporanei contemporary traditionalists Dyeing is one of the main links in the textile chain, in Prato like in any other textile district. Dyeing is history, art, added value and there is no quality manufacturing company that can do without a proper dyeing service. In Prato, as shown by documents kept at Palazzo Datini, the members of the Silli family have been working as dyers since 1790 and, after over two centuries, the Silli name is still associated with quality dyeing and the new generation is committed to carrying on the family business.

From Giuseppe, who established the first dyeing mill in the late 1800s, to Alessandro, Renzo and Alessandro again with his brother Armando, the mission of Tintoria Renzo Silli has always been to combine the family’s long-standing experience with innovation, state-of-the-art production methods and a deeply rooted passion for the dyeing business.

All this while going through different eras, market changes, national and international crises, and devising new solutions that make better use of both resources and space. The company’s growth, in fact, led to the opening in the early sixties of the big plant on Via Galcianese, which replaced the old factory on Via del Gelsomino, and still houses Tintoria Renzo Silli.

The company has recently installed new dyeing and drying machinery to increase its dyeing capacity. Last year, the cone department’s production capacity was doubled, allowing the company to dye up to 150 quintals of cones and tops a day. “We are very pleased- they say from Tintoria Renzo Silli- with the service we are able to offer our customers and with the growth we have been enjoying in the past few years. Quello della tintoria è uno degli anelli principali della filiera tessile. A Prato come in ogni altro distretto: la tintoria è storia, è arte, è valore aggiunto e non c’è produzione di qualità che possa fare a meno di un servizio adeguato.

A Prato, come dimostrato da documenti conservati a Palazzo Datini, la famiglia Silli esercita il mestiere del tintore dal 1790 ed a distanza di oltre due secoli lo stesso cognome è associato alla tintoria di qualità con l’ennesima generazione impegnata nel portare avanti l’azienda di famiglia.

Da Giuseppe alla fine del 1800 con la tintoria artigianale, ad Alessandro, Renzo, di nuovo un Alessandro con il fratello Armando.

La mission della Tintoria Renzo Silli rimane infatti quella di affiancare all’esperienza di famiglia secolare, innovazione e metodologie produttive all’avanguardia, assieme a tanta passione e a profondo amore per il lavoro di tintori. Il tutto attraversando epoche, cambi di mercato, crisi nazionali ed internazionali, e ideando soluzioni sempre nuove, sia sulla tipologia di lavoro che nella disposizione degli spazi, visto che all’inizio degli anni ’60 il vecchio stabilimento in via del Gelsomino, diventato ormai insufficiente, fu sostituito dalla nuova fabbrica in via Galcianese ,che ospita tutt’ora la tintoria Renzo Silli.

Il 2018 si apre quindi in spazi dove recentemente sono stati installati altri apparecchi di tintura e di impianti di asciugatura per ampliare la capacità tintoriale; il reparto rocche è stato raddoppiato lo scorso anno permettendo all’azienda di nobilitare fino a 150 quintali al giorno fra rocche e tops.

Research and creativity to stay A Zeta. Ricerca e fantasia per restare al vertice del mercato at the top of the market After a positive 2017, A Zeta Filati is ready to face a 2018 full of new developments. The company has greatly invested in the staff by hiring new people and has renovated its headquarters facility by enlarging and refurbishing the showroom where the new collections are shown to customers. The past year proved to be a better year than 2016 and increase in sales proceeds in spite of the general downturn trend.

2017 was the also the first full year of the company’s membership of Confindustria Toscana Nord, which brought A Zeta to take part in the Detox project by Greenpeace, alongside many other companies of the Pratese district, and, thus, commit to the sustainability of textile production. “In 2018, we plan to establish a number of collaborations outside of Italy- explains Alessandro Aiazzi- in order to develop new technologies in new markets. We are constantly assessing new partners, as well as researching on product quality”.

In a fast-changing market, the most important thing is to come prepared: “Menswear is increasingly turning towards fancy yarns- goes on Aiazzi- which have always been a “bestseller” for the district and alternate with three-dimensional yarns.

The furnishing fabrics sector is growing fast and is increasingly oriented toward the 3D-effect rather than fibers, which was a distinguishing feature of the clothing industry up to two years ago. However, fine wool and fibers are still at the core of our collections”. As for the 2018 trade shows, the company will be attending, as usual, Filo at Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan, both the winter and summer season shows.

Dopo un 2017 positivo per A Zeta Filati inizia un 2018 pieno di novità. L’azienda ha investito molto nel personale, con una serie di assunzioni che hanno ampliato l’organico, ed ha completatola nuova disposizione degli spazi interni, con una showroom ampia e moderna dove mostrare le nuove collezioni ai clienti: l’anno appena passato si è rivelato migliore rispetto al 2016 proseguendo il trend di crescita del fatturato in uncontesto generale difficile.

Si è chiuso anche il primo anno come membri di Confindustria Toscana Nord, un passo che ha portato A Zeta a far parte del progetto di Greenpeace, denominato Detox,insieme ad altre aziende del tessile italiano e di conseguenza ad inserirsi nel contesto della sostenibilità della produzione tessile.

“Nel 2018 avvieremo anche collaborazioni esterne fuori dall’Italia – spiega Alessandro Aiazzi – per sviluppare nuove tecnologie e nuovi mercati.

Valutiamo continuamente nuovi partner, così come proseguiamo nella ricerca sui prodotti sempre più all'avanguardia”.

In un mercato che cambia l’importante è farsi trovare preparati: “Nel settore dell'abbigliamento l’uomo sta diventando una fascia importante nei filati fantasia – continua Aiazzi – che sono da sempre un bestseller per il distretto. L’arredamento è in crescita e richiede più l’effetto tridimensionale così come la continua ricerca di fibre innovative e mischie particolari; in pratica cerca quello che fino a due anni fa era prerogativa dell’abbigliamento. Lane e fibre pregiate rimangono comunque una base per le nostre collezioni”.

A young man from Prato who graduated from the Bocconi University is the newly-appointed president of Confindustria Toscana: Alessio Marco Ranaldo, 31 years old, went from the “Junior” to “Senior”, from the interprovincial to the regional confederation of Italian industry. He is also the new-generation member of a family of textile entrepreneurs from Prato, who has reached standards of excellence in the field of technical textiles.

First, let’s have a look at the job done with the Young Entrepreneurs Group. Did it bring some interesting results?

Yes. My experience with the Young Entrepreneurs Group of Confindustria Toscana Nord was highly formative and I recommend it to all young entrepreneurs. It is a context where one can discuss and exchange experiences with interesting people. I see it as a chance to grow. What is more, it is the first step up the ladder of a career in association management to take part in the creation of a system that supports enterprises.

Has anyone up there in the “control room” pointed out your lack of experience yet?

Actually, everyone has been very helpful so far. My election came after a long and difficult search by the members of the Confederation. They probably decided on me because I was completely free from any conditioning or influence by authority figures, a sort of outsider. From this point of view, my inexperience was probably seen as more of an asset than a liability in bringing something new to the table.

So, now that you have been elected, what goals do you have?

Everyone around me seems eager to get down to work and I feel the same way. My priority is to draw attention to the companies’ needs, but I also believe it is essential to work closely and collaborate on a permanent basis with local and national public authorities, especially at a time of political instability such as the current one. Another major goal is to bring the manufacturing sector to achieve 20% of Tuscany’s GDP, which would lead to great development in the whole region. Last but not least, the “young people issue”: I believe that the average age of Tuscan entrepreneurs should Un bocconiano pratese è da poco il nuovo presidente di Confindustria Toscana. Si tratta di Alessio Marco Ranaldo, 31 anni, che in un attimo è passato dai giovani imprenditori ai senior, dall’ambito territoriale interprovinciale (Confindustria Toscana Nord con Lucca, Pistoia e Prato) a quello regionale.

Rappresenta l'ultima generazione di una famiglia dell’imprenditoria tessile pratese, che rappresenta da anni un’eccellenza nel tessile tecnico.

Innanzitutto un’occhiata al percorso in associazione: il percorso fatto con i Giovani Industriali ha portato frutti interessanti?

Decisamente sì. L’esperienza del Gruppo Giovani di Confindustria Toscana Nord è stata assolutamente formativa e la consiglio a tutti i giovani imprenditori. E’ un contesto in cui è possibile confrontarsi e condividere esperienze con persone interessanti: la trovo un’occasione di crescita sia come persona che come imprenditore. In più è una gavetta utilissima per chi ha voglia di impegnarsi nell’associazionismo e partecipare alla creazione di un sistema a supporto delle imprese.

Nelle sale dei bottoni, qualcuno ha già fatto notare il rischio di inesperienza?

In realtà ho trovato grande disponibilità. La mia elezione è venuta dopo un momento un po’ complicato fatto di rinunce e mancati accordi. Forse la scelta è caduta su di me proprio perché completamente scevro da ogni precedente condizionamento o vicinanza, una specie di outsider. Da questo punto di vista la mancanza di una pregressa esperienza in questo contesto può essere un plus perché foriera di qualcosa di nuovo.

Dopo l’iter elettivo, in cosa si sta impegnando?

Ho e vedo intorno a me grande voglia di fare. La mia priorità è portare sul piatto le esigenze delle imprese, ma ritengo essenziale anche portare avanti un confronto stabile con gli enti pubblici del territorio e nazionali, soprattutto con una situazione politica instabile come quella che stiamo vivendo. Altro importante obiettivo è portare il settore manifatturiero a raggiungere il 20% del Pil toscano: quello che conseguirebbe a questo risultato sarebbe un grande sviluppo per tutta la regione. Infine la ‘questione giovani’: trovo importante che l’età media degli imprenditori toscani si abbassi. Lavoreremo per formare i giovani e favorire la loro presenza sempre più attiva nei management aziendali interviews 23

Are young Tuscan people still attracted to working in the private industry?

Well, they should be and I’m sure that Tuscany offers some great chances of success. “Working for the firm”, like we say around here, should not be deemed reductive compared to working for a big company or in a big city abroad. A working experience “beyond one’s garden walls” is definitely formative, but medium-sized Tuscan companies are ideal for enjoying a professionally rewarding experience. Furthermore, all our businesses are very internationally-oriented and maintain close relationships with companies abroad.

Let’s talk about the critical issues that you had to face.

Tuscany must be numbered among the Italian regions which are the driving force behind the country’s economy. It has the potential for it and Confindustria’s role is that of helping companies develop their potential, in addition to sending out this message to all the businesses which are not members yet. Our association must look beyond its backyard and make its voice heard, out loud if necessary, being conscious of representing a professional category which brings wealth and job opportunities. We have to work towards the same goal: companies, associations, authorities.

And now a few words about your hometown and textile district, Prato.

I believe in the textile industry, in all its facets. I myself work in the technical textiles field, which is not the traditional Pratese business. The textile industry has had its ups and downs. We are facing great changes and many opportunities: the “Made in Italy”, partnerships, production chains. The trend, however, is upward and the textile industry is never going to be “mature” and with low growth rate. The successful Pitti shows, year by year, are the tangible proof of the importance of the textile industry in all its branches. e nei vertici delle associazioni.

I giovani toscani sentono ancora l’appeal dell’impresa?

Credo che dovrebbero e sono certo che in Toscana ci siano ottime prospettive per esperienze entusiasmanti. ‘Lavorare in ditta’, come si dice dalle nostre parti, non deve essere visto come riduttivo rispetto alla grande azienda o alla grande città, magari straniera: certo può essere positiva un’esperienza formativa fuori dall’orto di casa, ma le dimensioni medie dell’impresa toscana sono ideali per un’esperienza professionale gratificante. Senza dimenticare che le nostre imprese hanno tutte una grande vocazione all’internazionalizzazione e quindi fitti rapporti con l’estero.

Parliamo anche delle criticità che ha incontrato.

La Toscana deve entrare saldamente e stabilmente nel novero delle regioni che sono da traino al Paese. Le potenzialità ci sono e il ruolo di Confindustria deve essere quello di aiutare le imprese a svilupparle, oltre a quello di trasmettere questo messaggio anche alle imprese che non sono, o non sono ancora, associate. La nostra associazione deve sempre più guardare oltre il proprio recinto e rifuggire il rischio di essere autoreferenziale e deve essere pronta a farsi sentire, se necessario ad alzare la voce, consapevole del fatto che rappresenta una categoria che porta ricchezza e crea posti di lavoro. Dobbiamo lavorare tutti nella stessa direzione, tanto le imprese, quanto l'associazione e gli enti pubblici.

Infine due parole sulla sua provenienza pratese e sul distretto tessile.

Credo fermamente in questo settore, in tutte le sue sfaccettature, io per primo lavoro nel comparto dei tessili tecnici che non è quello tradizionale del territorio. Certamente il settore ha vissuto momenti altalenanti. Siamo in piena evoluzione e davanti a noi ci sono molte opportunità: il Made in Italy, le partnership, le filiere produttive. La tendenza comunque è ad una stabilizzazione al rialzo e certamente il tessile non sarà mai un settore ‘maturo’ e privo di sviluppo. In fondo il successo delle manifestazioni di Pitti, anno dopo anno, sono la prova tangibile dell’importanza del tessile in tutte le sue accezioni. interviews 25

Yarns and digitization, Filati e digitalizzazione, le novità di Fil-3 Fil-3’s latest developments 2018 is going to be a year of technological development at Fil-3: in the digital and 4.0 Industry era, the Prato-based company has greatly invested in services and ideas. In the past three years, Fil-3 has made great progress from the both the digitization and customer service point of view: Internet website, social networks and weekly newsletter providing news about the company’s yarns and the textile chain are the changes already made, whereas an app for the management of orders, sample collections and color cards are the latest development which will be introduced at Filo.

“The application- says Giacinto Gelli- will help all our agents by allowing them to digitize the selling process and allowing us to show our collection in a smarter and more effective way to all interested users, potential users and our current customers across the world.

One can view our collections, the color cards or the cone remnants and even place an order on the app. It is going to be integrated with all our systems in order to offer an effective real-time service, while allowing users to keep up to date with our latest news and promotions”.

The fact is that today it is more common to work from a smartphone than from a computer: “But we are not going to fail to give our website due attention- says Gelli- as we have already planned a restyling to make it more streamlined and oriented towards our customers’ needs, while trying to reach out to a wider audience and be more competitive in the international market”.

“L’applicazione – dice Giacinto Gelli – andrà ad aiutare tutti i nostri agenti digitalizzando il processo di vendita e ci permetterà di mostrare la collezione in modo smart ed efficace a tutti i nostri utenti interessati, a quelli potenziali e ai clienti attuali in tutto il mondo.

Dall’app sarà possibile vedere le collezioni, richiedere le cartelle colore o i fondi cono nel colore che si desidera ed anche fare veri e propri ordini. Sarà integrata con tutti i nostri sistemi per offrire un servizio in real time efficiente permettendo inoltre di rimanere aggiornati su tutte le nostre novità e promozioni”.

Una scelta motivata dal fatto che adesso molti lavorano più con lo smartphone che col computer: “Ma non dimentichiamo il sito web – conclude Gelli – perché abbiamo già in programma un restyling per renderlo più snello e orientato verso i bisogni dei nostri clienti cercando di raggiungere un pubblico ancora più ampio competendo su un mercato internazionale”. focus 27

A constant presence at the shows Biancalani, presenza costante alle fiere meccanotessili

All around the world non-stop. Perhaps not in 80 days, but constantly, year by year, chasing new markets, managing the traditional ones and attending trade shows and events: this is what happens to Biancalani, the Prato-based textile-machinery company which has already planned to take part in eleven shows in three different continents in 2018. Dhaka, Atlanta and Teheran are some of the destinations on the agenda, in addition to Colombiatex in Medellin, the first trade show of the year. But also Techtextil Russia, Itm in Istanbul and Itma Asia Citme in Shanghai. “It is important to be there- Massimo and Rossano Biancalani explain –whether in person or through our agent’s stand or within the cluster stands of the national Acimit associations. We take part in shows with our machinery, such as at Itma, in others by distributing pamphlets and printed material.

We also have an Airo 24 scale operating model which we bring to fairs, like we plan to do at the coming Indo Intertex show in Jakarta in April”.

Do trade shows reflect market changes or are they “separate worlds”?

Customers usually attend the shows. There are countries, such as Bangladesh and Turkey, which is our major European market, where we are sure to meet our customers. China, although it saw a slowdown last year because of many companies having to comply with the new antipollution and anti-emission regulations, is still a very important market which we have to constantly invest in by attending shows and periodically visiting regular and potential customers. The Chinese market’s interest in our textile machinery is still very high. Another very important market is India.

On the horizon, though still fairly distant, is Itma 2019 in Barcelona.

We have some interesting new developments to introduce at the show, a couple of machines about which we are not revealing anything yet. It is the most important show for our field of business, as it is attended by highly competent visitors. We will also be taking part in Itma’s Asian show in 2018. We hope we will be able to achieve the same successful results as in Milan in 2015: it was one of the best Itma shows ever for our company.

Un giro del mondo continuo. Magari in più di 80 giorni ma continuo, di anno in anno, per rincorrere nuovi mercati, gestire quelli più classici e portare il proprio nome a fiere ed eventi: è quello che succede a Biancalani, l’azienda pratese che al momento, per il 2018, ha già in programma la partecipazione a undici saloni in tre continenti diversi.

Dhaka, Atlanta e Teheran alcune tra le mete previste, oltre a Colombiatex a Medellin, il salone con il quale l’azienda pratese inaugura il nuovo anno. Ma anche Techtextil Russia, ITM a Istanbul e Itma Asia Citme a Shanghai: “E’ sempre importante esserci – spiegano Massimo e Rossano Biancalani – sia in modo diretto che nello stand dell’agente plurimandatario, oppure all’interno degli stand cluster di Acimit. Passiamo da stand con i nostri macchinari, come ad ogni edizione di Itma, la quadriennale più importante del mondo meccanotessile, ad altri dove invece facciamo distribuzione di depliant e materiale informativo. Ma abbiamo anche un modellino di una Airo 24 in scala e perfettamente funzionante, che portiamo alle fiere per dimostrare ai nostri visitatori il funzionamento della macchina, come faremo alla prossima Indo Intertex a Giakarta ad aprile”.

Le fiere riflettono il cambiamento dei mercati o sono ancora realtà a sé?

Di solito la partecipazione dei clienti è assicurata. Ci sono paesi come il Bangladesh o la Turchia, che resta il nostro mercato più importante in Europa, dove abbiamo la certezza di incontrare i nostri clienti. La Cina, che ha avuto un rallentamento la scorsa primavera per l’obbligo di adeguamento di molte aziende alle nuove norme anti inquinamento e anti emissioni, resta un importante mercato da presidiare assiduamente con fiere e con visite periodiche ai clienti acquisiti e potenziali. Comunque l’interesse di quel mercato per i nostri macchinari è sempre molto importante. Un altro mercato di gran peso per l’azienda Biancalani, da tenere sotto controllo con fiere e visite, è l’India.

All’orizzonte, ancora abbastanza lontano, c’è Itma 2019 a Barcellona.

Abbiamo interessanti novità da mostrare, un paio di macchinari dei quali non anticipiamo niente. Sicuramente per il nostro settore è la fiera più importante, che richiama un pubblico molto interessato e molto competente da ogni bacino tessile del mondo. Esporremo anche all’edizione asiatica di questa fiera nel 2018. Speriamo che a Barcellona possiamo ripetere l’esito molto positivo dell’edizione scorsa di ITMA a Milano nel 2015: è stata un’edizione davvero ottima per noi e per tutto il settore, forse da record. focus 29

20 years of history, always by 20 anni di storia, sempre a fianco della filiera the textile chain’s side di Elisa Signorini e Matteo Grazzini The debut at Milano Unica with the distribution of a celebratory book among the exhibitors of the July show; then a party in Paris, where La Spola was media partner of an event held by Lanificio Ricceri during the Première Vision show; and, last but not least, a symbolic but highly attended “cutting of the cake” at Filo, thanks to the collaboration of the Milanese show’s organizers: that is how we celebrated our first twenty years of activity.

Ours was and still is an insightful and engaging way to shed light upon the Italian textile-clothing world through news, interviews, in-depth features and surveys. The black and white magazine was born on November 1, 1997 on the initiative of Gruppo Editoriale: a journalistic product which filled a gap and gave voice to the Italian production districts. Those days seem so far away in terms of figures, working methods and technology. Then came the special issues (such as Showcase), desks at the trade shows, our first website in the early days of the Internet, a second portal which accompanied the paper magazine for a short time until it replaced it as the sole information medium. And, finally, the current website which was created, as the previous one, with the collaboration of Abaco Engineering: the newsletter, customized services, the supporting of local industrialists’ associations such as Confindustria Toscana Nord, social profiles and news pouring in from all over the world.

A journey and a target which we celebrated by publishing an over 100-page book that gives wide coverage to those who believed in La Spola all the way. To them, for their continued support, and to those who will follow goes Gruppo Editoriale’s deepest thank you, hoping to continue the journey through the world of Italian manufacturing excellence together.

L’1 novembre 1997 nacque, su iniziativa del Gruppo Editoriale, la rivista in bianco e nero: un prodotto giornalistico che andava a colmare una lacuna e a dare voce ai distretti produttivi italiani. Tempi che sembrano (e sono) lontanissimi per numeri, metodi di lavoro, mercati e tecnologie. Poi sono arrivati gli speciali (come lo Showcase), i desk alle fiere, un primo sito internet agli albori del web di massa, un secondo portale che per un breve periodo ha affiancato la rivista per poi, nel 2009, sostituirla come unico mezzo di informazione. nfine l’attuale sito, anche questo come il precedente realizzato in collaborazione con Abaco Engineering: la newsletter, i servizi personalizzati, il patrocinio di realtà come Confindustria Toscana Nord, i profili social e le notizie che arrivano ad ogni capo del mondo.

Un cammino e un traguardo che abbiamo voluto celebrare con un libro di oltre cento pagine che dà spazio anche a chi ha sempre creduto nella Spola e l’ha accompagnata fino a questo punto. A loro, a chi ci segue e ci seguirà vanno i ringraziamenti del Gruppo Editoriale, nella speranza di viaggiare ancora insieme in un mondo che è tuttora tra le eccellenze produttive italiane.

The sea of bureaucracy Gruppo Colle e il mare della burocrazia

“We are slaves to the law so that we may be free”. When Cicero thought up this saying, he certainly had no idea that one day it would apply to the textile industry and that two thousand years later there would have been entrepreneurs so constrained by laws and regulations that they are nearly prevented from doing their job, or small and medium-sized companies which are put on the same level as European multinational corporations when it comes to certifications, inspections and upgrading equipment. And yet, so it is. Gruppo Colle knows that the beginning of 2018 implies further costs to comply with EU rules and remain competitive in the world market. “As far as safety is concerned- Riccardo Matteini and Roberto Gualtieri explain- we accept any kind of imposition and we make no compromises, but in other situations, such as environmental protection, we believe that parameters should be commensurate with the company’s size and nature. The European Union does not make a distinction between the average Italian company, which employs less than 50 people, and companies across the world, where the average number of employees is 250, and treats them as equals in terms of certifications and bureaucratic constraints. At this rate, we will go bankrupt to fulfill our obligations”.

Gruppo Colle provides its customers with 9 certifications, in addition to the 2-3 certifications which are normally required, as further evidence that the company is seriously committed to environmental protection, ethics and safety, but some obligations are really too burdensome: “In everyday life, nobody is required to update his or her driver’s license - say the two entrepreneurs- Instead, at our company, every two years, fifty workers have to renew their license to drive forklift trucks, on a Saturday morning, by bringing production to a standstill and spending nearly ten thousand euros, and it’s not like we’re upgrading our trucks all the time. The industrialists’ associations have to help us with the bureaucratic burden and make things easier for entrepreneurs and, above all, make sure that we don’t have to compete with illegal companies”.

In the next two years, everything should revolve around the 4. 0 Industry plan: “It is a technological support to our job- conclude Matteini and Gualtieri –but also a cultural change which must be embraced in order not to fall behind our competitors. We have to address our training gaps by creating new middle-management and executive figures. We have always been able to manage and overcome product crises, but when the crisis affects the system as a whole, we are not prepared to find a solution”.

"Siamo schiavi della legge per poter essere liberi". Di certo quando Cicerone vergò questa sua massima non pensava all'industria tessile e neppure poteva immaginare che due millenni dopo ci sarebbero stati imprenditori inseguiti da norme e regole al punto da veder quasi congestionato e frenato il proprio lavoro. Oppure piccole e medie aziende equiparate alle multinazionali europee in fatto di certificazioni richieste, controlli e adeguamenti degli impianti. Eppure è così, con un 2018 appena iniziato che, anche al Gruppo Colle, significherà ulteriori spese per rispettare le normative UE e per restare sul mercato allargato mondiale.

"Sulla sicurezza - spiegano Riccardo Matteini e Roberto Gualtieri - accettiamo ogni tipo di imposizione e non scendiamo a compromessi, ma su altre situazioni, come la tutela ambientale, ci sono parametri smisurati che vanno dimensionati alla tipologia dell'impresa. L'Unione Europea non fa distinzioni ma se in Italia la media impresa ha meno di 50 addetti, nel mondo ne ha 250 e per rimanere concorrenti sul mercato bisogna equipararsi in certificazioni e burocrazia varia, rispettare capitolati sempre più stringenti. Di questo passo falliremo per adempimenti".

Il Gruppo Colle è in grado di offrire ai clienti 9 certificazioni oltre a 2-3 che sono state già richieste, a dimostrazione che comunque ambiente, etica e sicurezza sono più che rispettati, ma alcuni obblighi lasciano l'amaro in bocca: "Nella vita normale nessuno di noi deve fare un aggiornamento della patente di guida - dicono ancora gli imprenditori - mentre qui ogni due anni dobbiamo far fare a cinquanta dipendenti quello per guidare il muletto, di sabato mattina, fermando la produzione e spendendo quasi diecimila euro, come se i macchinari cambiassero continuamente. Il sistema associativo deve intervenire in questo senso e aiutarci a muoverci in questa burocrazia agevolando le scelte imprenditoriali ed anche facendo in modo che non ci sia un distretto assolutamente legale e uno totalmente illegale".

Nei prossimi due anni tutto dovrebbe ruotare intorno a Industria 4.0: "E' un supporto tecnologico al nostro lavoro - concludono Matteini e Gualtieri - ma anche un cambio di cultura che va colto, perché in Italia in questo siamo indietro. Abbiamo gap formativi che potranno essere attenuati anche con la creazione di nuovi quadri intermedi e dirigenziali perché siamo sempre riusciti a superare le crisi quando queste erano di prodotto, ma se la crisi è del sistema non siamo pronti a trovare una soluzione".

Two projects for the Circular ENTeR e M3P: due progetti per la Circular Economy coordinati da Centrocot Economy coordinated by Centrocot Every year the fashion system produces tons of waste which ends up in the landfill but which could be re-used in the production cycle. The European Commission argues that the recycling industry plays a strategic role in reducing the use of natural resources and in making significant energy savings.

Consequently, the commitment of companies has grown and they now see recycling as an important economic, environmental and social opportunity within the framework of the circular economy. Therefore, supporting collaboration and innovation with a view to reducing waste in order to prevent the consumption of non-renewable resources become strategic tools in being competitive.

In this context the European project ENTeR- Expert Network on Textile Recycling (www.interreg-central.eu/enter/), coordinated by Centrocot and co-financed by the Interreg Central Europe programme, investigates all of these questions, sharing the know-how and experience of 10 partners that include textile technological centres and clusters and industrial associations from 5 European countries: Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. This cooperation aims to improve the management of waste produced by the textile industry, promoting a common approach to the circular economy through the development of proposals of common innovative services by the research centres and associations involved.

Industrial waste is a resource that should not be underestimated also between companies that work in different sectors because they can create cases of industrial symbiosis able to mutually make their flows of material efficient through the exchange of waste which would otherwise go unused.

Centrocot, as leader of the Life M3P Project (www.lifem3p.eu ) “Material Match Making Platform for promoting the use of industrial waste in local networks”, is active in this field to develop, through concrete pilot cases, an action plan which favours the companies in the territory.

An on-line industrial waste management platform will enable the valorisation/transformation of waste into a resource and secondary raw materials, supporting companies in their continuous improvement, with the aim of reducing production waste, replacing the most critical raw materials for the environment and at the same time creating new economic opportunities.

Il sistema moda produce ogni anno tonnellate di scarti che finiscono in discarica e che potrebbero essere nuovamente inseriti nel ciclo produttivo. La Commissione Europea sostiene che l’industria del riciclo ha un ruolo strategico per la riduzione dell’impiego di risorse naturali e per un significativo efficientamento energetico.

Ne consegue che è in aumento l’impegno delle aziende che vedono il riciclo come un’importante opportunità, economica, ambientale e sociale nell’ambito dell’economia circolare. Il sostegno alla collaborazione e all’innovazione per la riduzione dei rifiuti e degli scarti per prevenire il consumo di risorse non rinnovabile diventano, pertanto, strumenti strategici per la competitività delle imprese.

In questo contesto il progetto europeo ENTeR- Expert Network on Textile Recycling (www.interreg-central.eu/enter/) coordinato da Centrocot e co-finanziato dal programma Interreg Central Europe, investiga tutti questi temi, grazie alla condivisione di conoscenze ed esperienze di 10 partner, fra centri tecnologici tessili e cluster ed associazioni industriali, di 5 paesi europei: Italia, Germania, Repubblica Ceca, Polonia ed Ungheria. La cooperazione mira a migliorare la gestione degli scarti/rifiuti industriali tessili, promuovendo un approccio comune alla circular economy, mediante lo sviluppo dell’offerta di servizi innovativi comuni da parte dei centri di ricerca e delle associazioni coinvolte.

I rifiuti industriali rappresentano una risorsa da non sottovalutare anche tra aziende dissimili, poiché possono attivare casi di simbiosi industriale in grado di rendere reciprocamente efficienti i propri flussi di materiale attraverso lo scambio di scarti e rifiuti altrimenti inutilizzabili. Centrocot, come capofila del Progetto Life M3P (www.lifem3p.eu ) “Material Match Making Platform for promoting the use of industrial waste in local networks”, si inserisce proprio in questo ambito per sviluppare, attraverso concreti casi pilota un modello di intervento a favore delle aziende del territorio.

Ciò consentirà, grazie a una piattaforma on-line per la gestione degli scarti e dei rifiuti industriali, di valorizzare/trasformare tali scarti in risorse e materie prime secondarie, supportando le aziende nel loro continuo miglioramento, al fine di ridurre i rifiuti di lavorazione, sostituire le materie prime più critiche per l'ambiente e creare al contempo nuove opportunità economiche. focus 35

Choosing to... Detox Tintoria Alessandrini, una scelta Detox

When Tintoria Alessandrini first opened, on April 11, 1972, within Prato’s city walls, it specialized in hank dyeing. The first step toward expanding the business was taken in 1976, when the company moved to Paperino, to a new facility in an empty area which would soon become the industrial Macrolotto district. The company went from 2,000 square meters to the current 6,000 in 2000, and goes on growing in size. In addition to hank dyeing, which is still the company’s core business, Tintoria Alessandrini specializes in hank printing and package and tops dyeing, with a staff of 43 and Gianni Bianchini, at the helm of the company.

What is the greatest change you have seen in the past few years?

It is the dyeing mills’ different approach to environmental protection: the parameters set by regulations to ensure environmental protection are very restrictive, for both processing and products employed. This involves great commitment on our part and a significant decrease in margin of profit. Our customers, make very specific requests. We also support Greenpeace and its Detox.

What is the Pratese district’s current situation?

Prato has gone from 27 yarn dyeing factories in the nineties to the current three or four gives an idea of the difficulties of district in the past years. This “natural selection” of companies has not, however, brought any benefits in terms of pricing, because we are strangled with the costs of raw materials and with the costs related to the supply of water and sewage treatment.

And what about the whole textile sector?

There has been a considerable decrease in volumes because textile districts such as ours and, in general, the Italian dyeing industry, have been focusing on quality rather than on quantity lately. The big volumes are being produced by cheap labour countries; we have made the switch from “wholesale” to “retail”: small dyeing batches, high specialization, a lot of research and innovation, very high quality. We have had to restructure the company and make big investments, but they have proven to be rewarding..

L’attività della Tintoria Alessandrini parte l’11 aprile del 1972 all’interno delle mura di Prato con la tintura di matasse. Il primo passo di crescita importante è pochi anni dopo, quando nel 1976 l’azienda si trasferisce a Paperino in un nuovo capannone in una zona ancora inutilizzata ma che di lì a poco sarebbe stata animata dalla lottizzazione del Macrolotto. Dai 2000 metri quadri coperti nel 1976 nel 2000 l’azienda è arrivata ad occuparne 6000, in un processo di crescita andato avanti finora.

Attualmente il core business rimane la tintura matasse, ma a questa attività si sono aggiunte la stampa matasse, la tintura di rocche e tops, portate avanti da 43 dipendenti guidati dall’amministratore unico Gianni Bianchini.

Qual è stato il cambiamento più grande negli ultimi anni?

Sicuramente quello del diverso approccio con l’ambiente: i parametri imposti dalla normativa per garantire il rispetto dell’ambiente sono strettissimi, sia per i processi che per i prodotti utilizzati. Questo comporta la necessità di un grande impegno da parte nostra e in realtà anche una significativa riduzione dei margini. Del resto i nostri clienti, che sono le industrie produttrici, fanno richieste ben precise. A ciò si aggiunga il nostro spontaneo impegno con Greenpeace e la nostra adesione a Detox.

Com’è il panorama del distretto pratese?

Per farsi rapidamente un’idea della difficoltà degli ultimi anni basti pensare che dalle 27 tintorie di filati degli anni ’90 oggi siamo passati a tre o quattro. Questa grande selezione non dà comunque vantaggi sui prezzi che possiamo proporre, perchè siamo strozzati dai costi delle materie prime e dai costi che sosteniamo per la fornitura e lo smaltimento dell’acqua.

Invece il panorama globale del settore?

Sicuramente c’è stata una forte riduzione dei volumi perché distretti come il nostro, ma in generale l’attività di tintoria in Italia, non è più un lavoro di quantità ma piuttosto di qualità. I grandi volumi si sono spostati nei paesi a basso costo di manodopera, noi, da un ingrosso, siamo diventati una farmacia….molti bagni piccoli, grande specializzazione, molta ricerca, molta innovazione, altissima qualità. E’ stata necessaria anche una riorganizzazione aziendale e la voce degli investimenti resta una fondamentale, anzi forse proprio quella che maggiormente ci ripaga.

COM.I.STRA blends COM.I.STRA coniuga tradizione e modernità tradition and innovation A company whose success revolves around a textile processing technique typical of the Prato area, which has stood the test of time by adapting to changes and is still a very interesting business in the Prato district and beyond. COM.I.STRA, which specializes in the production of regenerated wool, was established by Rolando Tesi in 1951 and grew with his children Fabrizio and Cinzia who, in the eighties, introduced the carbonizing and tearing processes. Today COM.I.STRA is a full-cycle production company unique of its kind, which recycles five million kilograms of rags every year. COM.I.STRA reuses fibers obtained not only from old clothing, but also from discarded cuttings of new fabrics used in the garment industry in all textile processing stages: spinning, warping, weaving and finishing. These rejects are recycled and reused, instead of being dumped with all the costs and environmental impact of waste disposal.

The Tesi family has been able to carry on and even update a local long-standing tradition: old clothing and fabric cuttings are sorted by color and quality. In some cases, linings are removed from woolen clothing. In the process, rags become fiber again by being mechanically torn and washed without using chemicals.

COM.I.STRA has been recently granted the GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification by ICEA, the Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification in charge of supervising and inspecting the whole production process.

Una lavorazione tipica del territorio pratese che ha saputo resistere e aggiornarsi, tanto da essere ancora oggi una realtà molto interessante nel panorama del distretto e non solo. Si tratta di COM.I.STRA, un’azienda specializzata nella rigenerazione di materie prime tessili in lana fondata da Rolando Tesi nel 1951 e cresciuta con i figli Fabrizio e Cinzia che negli anni ’80 hanno introdotti il carbonizzo e la stracciatura interna. Oggi COM.I.STRA è un’azienda a ciclo completo, una realtà unica al mondo nel suo genere che trasforma ogni anno cinque milioni di chilogrammi di stracci. La materia che COM.I.STRA lavora sono non solo gli indumenti dismessi, ma anche gli scarti di molte lavorazioni: ritagli che provengono dalle confezioni di abiti, tutti i sottoprodotti che nascono durante tutte le fasi del tessile come roccature , tessiture, filature, rifinizioni. Questi scarti anziché finire in discarica con i costi e l’impatto ambientale del caso, vengono riciclati e riutilizzati.

La famiglia Tesi è riuscita quindi a reinterpretare e a rinnovare una lunga tradizione del distretto: gli indumenti usati o i ritagli di confezione vengono suddivisi secondo la qualità e il colore. In alcuni casi viene effettuata anche la sfoderatura, per separare le fodere dalla parte di lana. Nasce da qui la lana rigenerata attraverso la sfibratura degli stracci e il lavaggio senza utilizzo di prodotti chimici.

Com.i.stra ha ottenuto in questo anno la certificazione GRS (Global Recycled Standard) rilasciata da ICEA, Istituto per la Certificazione Etica e Ambientale, organo deputato all’accertamento di tutto il processo produttivo. focus 39

Italia 2.0: a complete product range Italia 2.0: la novità che completa l’offerta

The range of offerings is now complete: with the opening of the second Italia 2.0 branch, Andrea Borelli’s companies cover every fabric processing stage. Cotton processing for shirting and white for white, which is carried out in the new plant on Via Perugia in Montemurlo, adds to the company’s production of carded fabrics, special yarns, such as bouclé, and medium-fine and jacquard yarns.

Andrea Borelli, the owner of the Group, is pleased with the latest addition to the company, which brings the number of weaving mills to three: Tessitura Italia and the two Italia 2.0 branches. Rather than taking over a firm, his latest investment consisted in purchasing the machinery from a weaving mill that was shutting down, new machines and in good condition. “After having purchased the machinery- says Borrelli- we upgraded the manufacturing plant with new equipment and the factory was fully operational by Christmas. We are very proud of the high level of sustainability that we have achieved with our production”. Currently, the plant on Via Perugia is equipped with thirty machines, but the industrial plan’s goal is to have forty looms running within June 2018.

At that point, the Group will be able to rely on a total of 95 looms and increase cotton fiber processing, which has not been developed in Prato until recently. At present, with the addition of the new weaving plant, the Group’s average productive capacity ranges from 25,000 meters up to 34,000 meters a day. The weaving mills currently work 80% for other Prato-based companies and 20% for northern-Italian firms. The Group’s short-term goal is to expand its northern-Italian market.

“We are dedicated- concludes Borelli- to supporting our customers by streamlining the textile chain as much as possible, which can be achieved by collaborating closely with the various links. The use of the most suitable machinery for different types of fabric, the transport and storage of goods, the supervision and inspection of the production process are services that Tessitura Italia and Italia 2.0 provide with great expertise”.

L’offerta è adesso completa: con l’apertura della seconda sede di Italia 2.0 le aziende di Andrea Borelli coprono ogni tipologia di lavorazione per la produzione di tessuti. La lavorazione cotoniera per camiceria e bianchi per bianchi, che viene realizzata nella nuova sede in via Perugia a Montemurlo, si aggiunge alla produzione di tessuto cardato, alla lavorazione di filati speciali tipo il bouclè, di filati medio-fini e jacquard.

Andrea Borelli, titolare del Gruppo, è soddisfatto di questa nuova acquisizione che porta a tre il numero delle tessiture, Tessitura Italia e le due sedi di Italia 2.0. Più che un’acquisizione l’investimento è consistito nell’acquisto dei macchinari di una tessitura in chiusura, macchinari nuovi e in ottime condizioni. “Dopo l’acquisto – commenta Borelli – abbiamo rifatto gli impianti del sito produttivo e da prima di Natale l’attività è partita.

Nostro fiore all’occhiello è l’alto grado di sostenibilità che garantiamo per le nostre lavorazioni”.

Al momento le macchine in via Perugia sono trenta, ma il piano industriale prevede di arrivare a far girare quaranta telai a giugno 2018. A quel punto il Gruppo conterà in totale 95 telai e presenterà un tipo di lavorazione, quella cotoniera, appunto, che non è molto diffusa a Prato. Ad oggi, con il nuovo impianto di tessitura, la capacità produttiva media è di 25.000 metri al giorno fino a raggiungere gli oltre 34.000 metri in periodi di massima richiesta. Le Tessiture al momento lavorano per l’80% su Prato, per l’altro 20% il mercato è il Nord Italia. Con questo ultimo tassello l’obiettivo è di allargare le collaborazioni col Nord Italia.

“Il nostro impegno – conclude Borelli – è quello di sostenere i committenti semplificando il più possibile la filiera tessile, cosa possibile grazie alle nostre collaborazioni con diverse lavorazioni. La ricerca dei macchinari più idonei alle diverse tipologie di tessuti, la movimentazione e il deposito merci, la supervisione e il controllo dell’avanzamento della produzione sono servizi che Tessitura Italia e Italia 2.0 offrono con grande competenza”.

A fully conscious reinterpretation of the past, without looking back nostalgically on it. This is the mood that accompanied the comeback of Best Company on the stage of the Pitti Uomo show in Florence, where the new collection by Olmes Carretti was introduced. The brand’s iconic hoodies are back as the stars of the 2018 S/S capsule collection, in addition to the F/W collection consisting of forty men’s and women’s garments. No nostalgic feelings about the glorious eighties, when Best Company sweatshirts were one of the key features of the Paninaro style. On the contrary, the company looks ahead confident of the experience gained.

“Forever young” is the slogan of the new advertising campaign and collection. And the two creative minds behind this relaunch are definitely going to be “forever young”: Olmes Carretti, who designed the capsule collection, and Oliviero Toscani who designed, art directed and is the face of the new advertising campaign.

Let’s start from Oliviero Toscani, who attended the Pitti Uomo show as both creator and face of the advertising campaign.

The company was looking for a special face, someone who could cause a sensation, and Oliviero Toscani has always been the embodiment of sensation, even now that he is a great looking 75-year-old. Toscani stars in the campaign, alongside some members of his family: his grandchildren, the female members. “I had great fun- says Toscani- putting myself, my family and grandchildren in front of the camera. An advertising agency would have never achieved such a result- he speaks frankly as usual- because probably most creatives would have sat down around a table and nothing would have been decided or done. I am glad I worked for this brand: it is a beautiful company with a beautiful history”.

Olmes Carretti is the man who designed the capsule collection introduced in Florence, besides being the creator of the brand in the eighties. Sweatshirts have always been the company’s signature piece, but the brand recently expanded to include outerwear

Una reinterpretazione, senza nostalgia, ma con la consapevolezza del passato. Questo il mood del rientro a Pitti Uomo di Best Company che ha presentato a Firenze la nuova collezione Best Company by Olmes Carretti. Tornano protagoniste le iconiche felpe con la capsule P/E 2018, che accompagneranno la collezione F/w composta da quaranta capi uomo e donna. Nessuna nostalgia per la gloria degli anni ’80, quando le felpe Best Company erano state scelte come emblema dai paninari, ma tanta voglia di andare avanti ricchi dell’esperienza.

Forever young è infatti lo slogan di questa campagna e di questa collezione. E forever young saranno sicuramente due dei protagonisti di questo rilancio: Olmes Carretti, che ha disegnato la capsule, e Oliviero Toscani che ha ideato, realizzato e interpretato la campagna pubblicitaria.

Partiamo proprio da Oliviero Toscani, presente anche a Pitti Uomo, testimonial oltre che autore della campagna pubblicitaria. L’azienda voleva un testimonial speciale, che creasse clamore, e Toscani è, ed è stato, sinonimo stesso di clamore, dall’alto dei suoi 75 anni splendidamente portati. Per il resto le novità sono che la vendita non avverrà più soltanto attraverso la grande distribuzione, com’è stato negli ultimi anni con Cisalfa Sport, ma sia in Italia che in Europa attraverso un’altra azienda distributrice, la Faris, che solo nel nostro paese conta oltre duecentoventi punti vendita. Per quanto riguarda l’estero, la presenza è già consistente in Spagna e Nord Europa, l’idea è di potenziare, anche grazie a Pitti Uomo, dove Best Company è tornata dopo 20 anni di assenza, gli Usa, la Gran Bretagna e la Russia. Del resto proprio gli Usa trainarono il grande successo dell’azienda di Carpi nel 1982, anno della sua nascita. A 70-year-long history Rifinizione Vignali: una storia lunga 70 anni

Rifinizione Vignali began operating in 1947, when Silvio Vignali took his first steps as entre-preneur by teaselling blankets using strictly artisan methods. In the years 1954-55, with Silvio’s determined and dynamic son Ivo – the current president of the board of directors- joining the company, Rifinizione Vignali changed and expanded its production range and processing methods. In addition to new finishing treatments of fine and innovative fabrics, in particular, upholstery fabrics which had not been produced in the Prato area until then, the company became highly specialized in the finishing of acrylic carpets and faux fur coats.

Upon Silvio’s death in 1961, Ivo upgraded the entire machinery fleet at the company’s cur-rent headquarters. In 1973, a new dyeing mill, Ma-Vi, was started, adding to the one operat-ing within Rifinizione Vignali. Over the years, the company further expanded its activity, soon becoming well-known not only in the Prato area, but also across the country and abroad. Today, the new-generation members of the family, Barbara and Silvia, work by their father Ivo’s side at the head of Rifinizione Vignali and Ma-Vi. Rifinizione Vignali faced the difficult 2008 crisis by restructuring the company to respond to the clientele’s new needs, being able to maintain and even strengthen its presence in the market. Over the years, Rifinizione Vignali has become highly specialized in the finishing of velvet and upholstery fabrics, quickly building up a base of regular customers. The company currently employs 60 people and is greatly committed to research on new technologies and improvement of processing and service quality.

L'attività della Rifinizione Vignali ha origine nel 1947 quando Silvio Vignali mosse i primi passi di imprenditore con iniziative prettamente artigianali, limitate alla garzatura di coperte Negli anni ’54/’55, con l’inserimento sempre più determinato e dinamico del figlio Ivo Vignali, attuale presidente del Consiglio di amministrazione, l’azienda cambia gradualmente tipologia di tessuti, ampliando e potenziando la primitiva attività artigianale. Alle nuove idee legate al finissaggio di tessuti qualificati ed innovativi soprattutto su articoli per arredamento, che nell’area pratese non erano stati fino ad allora prodotti, si aggiungono le lavorazioni di finissaggio di tappeti di acrilico e pellicce ecologiche.

Dopo la morte di Silvio nel ’61, Ivo rinnova l’intero parco macchine nell’attuale sede, nel 1973 viene fondata una nuova Tintoria Ma-Vi, che affiancherà quella interna della Rifinizione Vignali. Prosegue la ricerca di nuove specializzazioni che rendono la Rifinizione Vignali sempre più qualificata e apprezzata non solo nel comprensorio pratese, ma anche a livello nazionale ed europeo.

Oggi il ricambio generazione ha già i volti di Barbara e Silvia, che affiancano il padre Ivo alla guida della Rifinizione Vignali e della Ma-Vi. Alla pesante crisi del 2008 la Rifinizione Vignali ha reagito ristrutturandosi per essere adeguata alle esigenze della clientela, riuscendo a mantenere e poi recuperare una buona parte di mercato. Sono ormai diversi anni che la Rifinizione Vignali si è specializzata nei velluti e tessuti da arredamento servendo clienti consolidati negli anni. Ad oggi l'azienda conta oltre 60 dipendenti ed è fortemente impegnata nella ricerca di nuove tecnologie e nel miglioramento della qualità dei processi e dei servizi.

Fadis, future-oriented growth Fadis, una crescita rivolta al futuro

For over 58 years, Fadis has been providing the worldwide textile industry with state-of-the-art machinery: rewinders, soft winders, assembly winders, hank to cone winders, reeling machines, spooling and intermingling machines for the processing of any kind of yarn. A family-owned and run business and a leading company in the production of precision cone-winding machines. In the past five-year period, Fadis sales have increased to staggering numbers: +70% with an over 30 million turnover in 2017. Fadis is now reaping the benefits delivered by forward-looking choices made in the past, first of all, investments in product research and development. The company currently invests 6% of annual revenues to upgrade its machinery for higher quality production and anticipate well in advance the needs of its clientele.

Internationalization is another of Fadis’ strategic pillars. The company exports, on an average, 93% of production to 70 countries, offering also wide-spread post-sales assistance. It has representative offices and several post-sales assistance offices in many countries, including the possibility of activating a remote emergency assistance system directly from the company’s headquarters. Un’azienda di famiglia, che in particolare si afferma come leader nella produzione di roccatrici di precisione.

Una storia in crescita, dato che nell’ultimo lustro l’aumento del fatturato per Fadis è stato del 70%, con più di trenta milioni di turnover nel 2018.

Questi successi sono il risultato di scelte lungimiranti fatte negli anni precedenti. Innanzitutto sono stai fatti importanti investimenti in Ricerca e Sviluppo sul prodotto, oggi l’azienda investe il 6% del fatturato per rendere le proprie macchine sempre più performanti cercando d’intercettare in anticipo le esigenze dei clienti. L’internazionalizzazione è un altro dei pilastri strategici di Fadis, che esporta in media il 93% della produzione in 70 paesi, offrendo anche un servizio capillare di post vendita. L'azienda, nell'ottica di fornire un servizio alla propria clientela ha aperto uffici di rappresentanza e diversi punti di assistenza post vendita in molti paesi e attivato un sistema di pronto intervento in remoto per gestire alcuni interventi direttamente dalla casa madre.

La scelta di mantenere l’intera produzione in Italia e ricorrendo a fornitori per il 95% italiani è stata vincente. Questo ha permesso di mantenere la flessibilità nel rispondere velocemente alle esigenze dei clienti e garantendo la qualità totale.

Importanti investimenti sono stati fatti anche nell’ambito della sostenibilità sia tramite la partecipazione al progetto “Sustainable Technologies” promosso da Acimit, sia ristrutturando secondo le logiche della sostenibilità i capannoni e installando un importante impianto fotovoltaico con una produzione annua di energia pari 650mila kilowatt. Altre sfide si stanno profilando: Fadis sta lavorando per raccogliere le nuove opportunità che Industria 4.0 offre. Itema: more than just Itema: non solo telai all’avanguardia state-of-the-art looms

The key word of the past four years for the Italian leading company in the production of weaving looms has been “transformation”, for it underwent an extensive restructuring of its production activities aimed at rationalizing, optimizing and modernizing the group’s plants all the over the world in full compliance with the Lean Manufacturing principles. Today Itema is a more streamlined and smooth-flowing version of itself, owing to the vision and determination of the company’s MD Carlo Rogora who, shortly after his appointment five years ago, devised a plan for the revision of production-logistics flows within the company, by creating a task force of lean manufacturing professionals and experts, in order to eliminate the inefficiencies, meet Itema’s customers’ needs with flexibility, readiness and expertise, adapt to the fast-changing markets, reduce delivery times and provide better services, higher quality and lower costs. By doing so, all Itema production facilities have now achieved the world’s highest standard of excellence and operate in full compliance with the Lean Manufacturing method. The first phase of the plan focused on the Group’s main production facility in Colzate and on the whole production process in the mechanical processing, pre-assembly, assembly and quality control departments. Then it was the Shanghai plant’s turn and, lastly, came the modernization of the former Sulzer facility in Zuchwil, Switzerland.

All efforts, in all plants, were directed towards the intensive labour areas, for the purpose of reducing work-in-process times and stock levels, evolving from a “push” to a “pull” production system which ensures a real flow of value within the production departments.

In order to achieve this goal, the company had to rethink its logistics flows, both within and outside the company, involving also the logistics and buying departments. The implemented activities focused on the pre-assembly and assembly areas. In parallel with the lean manufacturing process, sizeable investments were made in personalized CNC machinery to increase the Itema plants’ flexibility and capacity. The productive capacity has more than doubled, allowing the company to respond to the growing demand for Itema looms and ensure the quickest delivery time on the market.

La parola chiave degli ultimi quattro anni per l’azienda italiana leader nella produzione di telai per la tessitura è stata “trasformazione”, grazie ad una ampia ristrutturazione delle attività produttive con l’obiettivo di razionalizzare, ottimizzare e modernizzare gli stabilimenti del gruppo in tutto il mondo nel pieno rispetto dei principi di Lean Manufacturing.

Itema è oggi una versione più snella e scattante di sé stessa principalmente grazie alla visione e alla determinazione dell’AD Carlo Rogora che, poco dopo la sua nomina cinque anni fa, ha lanciato il programma di revisione dei flussi produttivo-logistici all’interno dell’azienda creando una task force di professionisti ed esperti di “lean manufacturing” col mandato di ripensare i flussi aziendali nei processi produttivo-logistici per eliminare le inefficienze e di portare immediato beneficio ai clienti di Itema. Oltre a aumentare la capacità di Itema Group nel soddisfare i bisogni dei clienti con flessibilità, agilità e abilità per rispondere ai cambiamenti del mercato molto variabile, riducendo i tempi di consegna e fornendo un miglior livello di servizio, qualità e costo. Oggi tutti gli stabilimenti sono esempi di eccellenza a livello mondiale e rispondono ai più stringenti criteri di Lean Manufacturing.

Il progetto si è focalizzato nella prima fase sullo stabilimento principale del gruppo a Colzate e ha riguardato l’intero processo nei reparti di lavorazioni meccaniche, premontaggio, montaggio e controllo qualità. Poi è toccato a Shanghai e per ultima è stata avviata la modernizzazione dell’ex stabilimento di Sulzer a Zuchwil, in Svizzera.

Gli sforzi in tutti gli stabilimenti si sono concentrati sulle aree labour intensive, con la finalità di ridurre i tempi di attraversamento e i livelli di stock, passando da una produzione di tipo push ad una logica pull che garantisse un reale flusso del valore all’interno dei reparti produttivi.

Per farlo l’azienda si è trovata a dover ripensare anche i propri flussi logistici, interni ed esterni, coinvolgendo anche le aree di logistica e acquisti. Le attività implementate si sono focalizzate sull’area di premontaggio e poi estese al montaggio. Parallelamente al processo di lean manufacturing, consistenti investimenti hanno riguardato macchinari CNC su misura per rafforzare la flessibilità e la capacità degli stabilimenti Itema. Oggi la capacità produttiva è più che raddoppiata, consentendo così all’azienda di rispondere tempestivamente alla crescente richiesta di telai Itema e assicurando i tempi di consegna più brevi del mercato.

May the fish be with you Chi dorme non... mangia pesci

Florence, Milan and Paris. In addition to hosting textile-clothing trade shows, having a natural bent for top-quality fashion and being worldwide renowned, these three cities share another trait: they are not located near the sea. A characteristic which, however, does not prevent them from having some of the world’s best fish and seafood restaurants, where even the most demanding gourmands can be sure to find quality and freshness in every dish.

As usual, we follow the calendar of the trade shows where Showcase is distributed. So, the first city on our trip through fish and seafood restaurants for after-show dining is Florence, where we find some top internationally-renowned addresses. Our first stop is Fuor d’acqua (Via Pisana 37r). The cuisine is based on the use of seasonal ingredients and the catch of the day. Among the signature dishes are the raw fish platters and seafood appetizers, both hot and cold. At Cestello Ristoclub (Piazza del Cestello 8), everything is a tribute to tradition and to Mediterranean culinary culture, including the iced fish counter from which customers are invited to choose what they want and either take it home or have it cooked by the chef. The menu includes Iranian Beluga caviar. A more recent addition to the local restaurant scene, San Niccolò 39 (Via di San Niccolò 39r) is an elegant, welcoming and softly-lit restaurant. It features a courtyard, a treat for both the palate and sight. With reference to the sea in its name, Portofino (Viale Mazzini 25/27r) serves strictly locally-caught fish. Among the must-tries are the oyster tasting dish, which varies every week, and the so-called “boat fish”, which comes in several versions. This restaurant’s name, Burro e Acciughe (Via dell’Orto 35), says it all: simple, low-cost cuisine, a fish counter and raw fish corner. Of course, the signature dish is toasted bread with butter and Cantabrian anchovies. A small, no-frills suburban restaurant, Trattoria Calino (Via di Scandicci Alto 1 – Scandicci) does not offer silks and tapestries but excellent food. The menu includes once-common fish that is now hard to find, such as barracuda, Atlantic horse mackerel and Atlantic pomfret.

In Milan - despite its geographical position, the city is one of Italy’s major fish markets- fresh fish is prepared in a variety of ways: from traditional southern-Italian dishes to Oriental-style raw fish to typical local recipes. Mercato del Pesce ( Via Sammartini 70), located near the central train station, is a restaurant-fish shop with large windows separating the two spaces and fresh fish on display to choose from. The raw fish platters are among the most popular dishes. A’Riccione Bistrot (Via Taramelli 70) offers top quality Romagnainspired cuisine and excellent service. The menu includes a beautiful dish of Romagna-style Mediterranean mixed grill. Fishbar de Milan (Via Montebello 7) is a casual dining restaurant with unplastered walls, seventies-style pots and pans and wooden trays: the menu Firenze, Milano e Parigi. Al di là delle fiere del tessile-abbigliamento, della propensione alla moda di altissima qualità e della notorietà in tutto il mondo queste tre città hanno in comune un altro particolare: non c’è il mare. Cosa questa che però non impedisce loro di avere ristoranti di pesce tra i migliori al mondo, locali in cui anche il più appassionato gourmet è certo di trovare qualità e freschezza a livelli di eccellenza.

Come sempre seguiamo il calendario delle fiere nelle quali viene distribuito Showcase e quindi anche in questo caso a fare da “overture” ai consigli per spuntini e cene post stand è Firenze, con alcuni indirizzi top a livello internazionale. Partenza d’obbligo con il Fuor d’acqua (via Pisana 37r). A dettare legge in cucina, la stagionalità degli ingredienti e del pescato del giorno. Fiore all’occhiello, oltre ai piatti di crudité, gli antipasti, crudi o caldi. Al Cestello Ristoclub (piazza del Cestello 8) tutto è un omaggio alla tradizione e alla cultura gastronomica mediterranea, con tanto di pescheria a vista, da cui gli ospiti possono scegliere il pesce da portare e preparare a casa o da affidare agli chef: nel menù anche il caviale iraniano Beluga. Più nuovo invece il San Niccolò 39 (via di San Niccolò 39r): il locale è raffinato e accogliente, caratterizzato da luci tenui.

Da vedere anche la corte interna, per soddisfare vista e gusto.

Richiamo al mare nel nome del Portofino (viale Mazzini 25/27r) dove si serve pesce rigorosamente della zona. Da non perdere la degustazione di ostriche, che varia ogni settimana, e il “pesce della barca” proposto in tante versioni. Burro e Acciughe (via dell’Orto 35) ha tutto nel nome: semplicità, low cost, il bancone che mostra il pesce fresco e l’angolo del crudo. Il top è, ovviamente, il pane caldo con burro e acciughe del Cantabrico. Spartano, come può essere un piccolo locale di periferie, è Trattoria Calino (via di Scandicci Alto 1 – Scandicci): non bisogna aspettarsi sete, velluti e arazzi ma solo grande attenzione al gusto. In menù anche il pesce ormai dimenticato in altri luoghi, come il barracuda, il sugarello o il pesce castagna.

A Milano, che a dispetto dalla posizione geografica è uno dei mercati ittici più importanti d’Italia, invece il sapore del pesce arriva in tanti modi: per la cucina regionale tipica soprattutto del su Italia, per il pesce crudo di ‘provenienza’ orientale o per tradizione gastronomica. Al Mercato del Pesce, in via Sammartini 70, vicino alla stazione Centrale, c’è un binomio ristorante/pescheria con divisione affidata a delle vetrate: si vede il pesce che si ordina e si mangia. I cruditè sono i più gettonati. Riferimenti alla Romagna da A’Riccione Bistrot (via Taramelli 70), dove la cura delle portate va di pari passo con la qualità del cibo: i sapori della Riviera rivivono anche nel menù, vedi ad esempio la gran grigliata mista del Mediterraneo alla romagnola.

Alice - Milan includes nearly everything, from salt-water to fresh-water fish, from crab to codfish and salmon paired with curry-flavored chips, nachos and wasabi sauce.

A Spanish port atmosphere is found at La Pulperia (Via Piero della Francesca 72), featuring white, yellow and light blue walls, tables and chairs: a Spanish name and a Spanish menu, including tapas and traditional Galician dishes, in addition to the famous paella. A Ligurian name and a Tuscan management ( plus a mix of the two regions in the kitchen) for Le 5 terre (Via Appiani 9), one of Milan’s best-known restaurants, established in 1968: the menu ranges from focaccia to carpaccio, tartare and sea bass with some options for non-fish eaters too. Last but not least, Alice (Piazza XXV aprile 19), the restaurant run by Michelin-starred chef Viviana Varese and sommelier Sandra Ciciriello, located inside Eataly Smeraldo, with view over Corso Como. Modern interiors and an extensive, top-quality gourmet menu.

Of course, pricing is directly proportional to quality.

When it comes to dining in Paris, there is always a dizzying array of choices, and the same goes for fish and seafood which, in the Ville Lumière, is nearly synonymous with oysters. Let’s start with L’Ecailler du Bistrot (22 Rue Paul Bert – Bercy), where fresh seafood and oysters are enjoyed in a simple and elegant nautical-style venue with wooden tables. The Plateau Royal is said to be one of the best in all of Paris. Le Duc (243 Boulevard Raspail – Montparnasse) is exactly the opposite in terms of interior design: an elegant, typical Frenchstyle restaurant considered to be among the top eateries in Paris. Le Rech (62, Avenue des Ternes) is run by Alain Ducasse and is the one restaurant, among those belonging to the celebrity chef ’s chain, devoted to Parisian fish lovers. Top-quality oysters, among the best found in the Marais district, can be enjoyed at Le Mary Celeste (1, Rue Commines), where Canadian chef Haan Palcu-Chang offers a menu of fresh fish, which changes every day, with an Oriental touch. Fish la Boisonnerie (69,Rue de Seine) features tiled walls and an old fish shop atmosphere: quality food at reasonable prices, which is quite uncommon in Paris and makes dining at the restaurant all the more inviting. Advance booking is highly recommended. Fish coming straight from Brittany and the nearby market, in the 12th arrondissement, is served at Le table di Aligre (11, place d’Aligre): that is why the menu changes daily. The house specialty is grilled fish. A one-Michelin star for Antoine (10, Avenue de New York), where one can enjoy the view of the Seine and the Eiffel Tower while waiting to be served, but the restaurant is definitely on the high-budget end. As a classic finale to our tour, Le Dome (108, Bd du Montparnasse), an Art Decostyle brasserie best known for its fish and seafood dishes. si mangia di tutto, dal pesce di acqua salta a quello di acqua dolce passando da granchi, merluzzo e salmone abbinati a patatine al curry piuttosto che a nachos o salsa al wasabi. Atmosfera da porto spagnolo a La Pulperia (via Piero della Francesca 72), con muri, tavoli e sedie bianchi, gialli e azzurri: nome spagnolo, specialità spagnole con tapas e piatti tipici della Galizia, oltre all’immancabile paella. Nome ligure e gestione toscana (con il mix che si concretizza ai fornelli) per Le 5 terre (via Appiani 9), uno dei nomi storici della cucina milanese, aperto dal 1968: il menù inizia con la focaccia e si dipana in mille rivoli con carpacci, tartare, branzino e qualche concessione a chi non mangia pesce.

Infine Alice (piazza XXV aprile 19), il ristorante della chef stellata Viviana Varese e di Sandra Ciciriello, maître e sommelier riaperto a Eataly Smeraldo, con vista su corso Como. Ambiente di design, menu ampio, ricercato e con proposte gastronomiche d’eccellenza. La spesa è conseguenza della qualità.

Come sempre indicare alcuni ristoranti di Parigi significa escluderne almeno il triplo. Questo vale anche per il pesce, che nella Ville Lumière significa anche e soprattutto ostriche. Iniziamo quindi da L’Ecailler du Bistrot (22 rue Paul Bert – Bercy), dove frutti di mare e ostriche fresche si consumano in un ambiente semplice e ricercato, in stile nautico con tavoli in legno. Dicono che il loro Plateau Royal sia uno dei migliori di tutta Parigi. Le Duc (243 boulevard Raspail – Montparnasse) è invece l’opposto dal punto di vista dell’ambiente: locale di classe dall’autentico stile francese unanimemente ritenuto uno dei migliori ristoranti di pesce di tutta la capitale francese. C’è la firma di Alain Ducasse a Le Rech (62, avenue des Ternes) visto che il famoso chef ha preso nel suo gruppo questo punto di riferimento per gli amanti del pesce parigini. Ancora ostriche di gran livello, tra le migliori nel Marais, da Le Mary Celeste (1, rue Commines), dove lo chef di origini canadesi Haan PalcuChang propone un menù di pesce fresco che cambia ogni giorno, aggiungendo anche un tocco orientale. Fish la Boisonnerie (69, rue de Seine) ha piastrelle alle pareti e un'atmosfera da vecchia pescheria: abbina la qualità a prezzi poco ‘parigini’ e quindi il rapporto palato soddisfatto/ portafogli salvaguardato è invitante. Conviene prenotare. Pesce che arriva dalla Bretagna e dall’attiguo mercato, nel 12’ arrondissement, quello di Le table di Aligre (11, place d’Aligre): per questo il menù cambia quotidianamente. La specialità è il pesce alla piastra.

Una stella Michelin per Antoine (10, avenue de New York), dove l’attesa per le portate può essere ingannata ammirando la Senna o la Torre Eiffel. In questo caso il portafogli deve essere un po’ più… fornito. Finale ‘classico’ con Le Dome (108, bd du Montparnasse), brasserie in stile Art Déco specializzata in piatti a base di pesce e frutti di mare.
