And it’s more than 40 years since the Azzurra, Italy’s first contender for the America’s Cup, set sail from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Proprio dallo Yacth Club Costa Smeralda più di 40 anni fa partiva l’avventura di Azzurra, la prima sfida italiana all’America’s Cup. What D.H. Lawrence felt for Sardinia was love at first sight
It was 1921 when one of the most eccentric couples of the age - the English writer D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda von Richthofen - arrived in Sardinia. It was love at first sight. So much so that as soon as he arrived home, Lawrence wrote Sea and Sardinia, part travel journal, part guide to the island life of the period and the places that struck him most as he moved between Cagliari, Mandas, Sor-
gono, Nuoro and Terranova, as Olbia was then called. Despite his extensive world travel, Lawrence was so smitten with Sardinia that he wrote “This land is like no other place”.

The word chindalu, or kindalu, means ‘swift’ – the device that unravels a hank of yarn – and is derived from the Greek verb κυλινδέω (kulindéō), ‘cause to rotate’
Words arise to serve the world they are part of, and this is why a language that has retained close ties with its origins has the power to make us travel in time and space. This is the wonderful charm of Sardinian, which is not a dialect, but a tongue with a wealth of words and melodies that sound exotic even to inhabitants of peninsular Italy. In turn, visitors to Gallura will notice words that are not heard in other areas of the island, so much so that for many people, gallurese has the value of a genuine language that intertwines near and distant lands, including Greece, which contributes a number of typical terms. One of these is chindalu (or kindalu), a word that certainly bears no resemblance to its Italian counterpart, ‘arcolaio’, referring to the device that unravels yarn, and does not conceal its Greek root in the verb κυλινδέω (kulindéō), ‘cause to rotate’. The term is associated with one of the most ancient of Gallura’s artisan traditions, weaving, which gives rise to the celebrated rugs of Ag-
gius, brought back into fashion by the Sardinian artist Maria Lai, who was fascinated by the stories of real island life depicted in the rugs through over a hundred symbols and motifs, some of which can also be found in the stone mosaic pavements of this small inland village.

Questo è il prezioso fascino del sardo, non un dialetto, ma una lingua ricca di parole e melodie che suonano esotiche anche chi vive nella penisola del Bel paese. A sua volta, chi visita la Gallura, può notare parole che non si sentono in altre zone della Sardegna, tanto che anche il gallurese ha per molti il valore di una vera e propria lingua, dove si intrecciano terre vicine e lontane, tra cui la Grecia, a cui si devono alcuni termini tipici. Tra questi, chindalu (o kindalu), che certo non ricorda il suo corrispettivo italiano, ovvero ‘arcolaio’, lo strumento che dipana le matasse di filo, ma che invece non cela la sua radice greca, dal verbo κυλινδέω (kulindéō), ‘far girare’. Co-presenter of the Globe Soccer Awards at Cala di Volpe, we had the chance to meet her.
Television launched your career, and it is still an important part of your work, especially the sports broadcasts. Can you tell us about your journey?
My journey began in Milan when I moved there from Sardinia in 2024 to continue my education. My start in TV came the following year, 2005, with my debut as showgirl on Striscia la notizia. In 2007 it was the turn of MTV, as presenter of TRL on Tour together with Alessandro Cattelan. With regard to football, from 2013 to 2018 I was co-presenter with Pierluigi Pardo of the sports program
Tki Taka – football is our game on Italia 1. In 2021 came Sky Calcio Club and Gol Deejay
Certainly yes, my passion for sport was one of the drivers behind some of my choices and I consider it a fundamental part of who I am. I still play many sports today and I am very passionate about them.
You were involved in the Globe Soccer Awards at Cala di Volpe. What struck you about the event and its protagonists?
It was truly exciting to welcome such a large turnout of spectators and enthusiasts, especially out of

Of course, holidays mean only Sardinia for me. I love waking up early and going for a run or a game of tennis. And then long days on the beach with my son, who loves going jet skiing. I got my boat licence especially for him.
Which Sardinian dish reminds you of your childhood?
I love pasta, one of my favourite dishes is ravioli stuffed with sweet ricotta.
Future plans?
My work is constantly changing so it’s impossible to make too many long term plans. Now it’s time to think about the new season, a lot of ‘work in progress’.

Amo la pasta, tra i miei piatti preferiti i ravioli ripieni con ricotta dolce dentro.
Progetti futuri?
Il mio lavoro è in continuo cambiamento ed è impossibile fare troppi progetti a lungo termine. Ora è tempo di pensare alla nuova stagione, ancora molto ‘work in progress’.

With its arches, porticoes and turrets that frame the view, the Cala di Volpe hotel features pastel colours and soft lines that give a visionary touch
In the area managed by the Costa Smeralda Consortium, nature and architecture contribute to defining an identity that is unique in the world. Extending over 3,114 hectares, it is 96% green, an expanse of Mediterranean scrub. The remaining 4% is an open-air architectural masterpiece that reflects the styles of Sardinia, from nuraghi to Gallura stazzi. Just as Prince Karim Aga Khan desired when he created the ‘Architecture Committee’, tasked with creating a distinctive style that respected and celebrated the essence of Sardinia. The committee brought together some of the best international architects of the time:
Jacques Couëlle, Michele Busiri Vici, Luigi Vietti, Raymond Martin and the Sardinian Antoni Simon Mossa
Michele Busiri Vici and Antoni Simon Mossa developed a style that favoured white buildings, inspired by the stazzi of Gallura, the patios of Campidano and the villas of the Costa Brava. This style, known as Mediterranean or neo-Mediterranean architecture, is characterized by simple, clean lines, which reflect the light of the Sardinian sun and integrate harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Extraordinary examples of this architecture are the church of Stella Maris in Porto Cervo, the hotel Romazzino, the hotel Luci di la Muntagna, Villa Bettina in Liscia di Vacca and Dolores Guinness’s villa in Cala di Volpe, all designed by Busiri Vici.

Michele Busiri Vici e Antoni Simon Mossa svilupparono uno stile che prediligeva le costruzioni di colore bianco, ispirate agli stazzi della Gallura, ai patii del Campidano e alle ville della Costa Brava. Questo stile, noto come architettura mediterranea o neo-mediterranea, è caratterizzato da linee semplici e pulite, che riflettono la luce del sole sardo e si integrano armoniosamente con il paesaggio circostante.

On the one hand, simple and clean lines, which reflect the light of the Sardinian sun, on the other mimetic architecture inspired by the ancient stazzi, nuraghi, hollows and domus de janas (literally house of the fairies)

The Pitrizza hotel, designed by Vietti, is a magnificent example of this environmental style, as is ‘his’ Piazzetta in Porto Cervo, which is elevated to allow a breathtaking view of the bay, and Villa La Grotta in Abbiadori, the work of Couëlle, who designed the Cala di Volpe hotel to be eye-catching, to be illuminated and make people dream from the outside, but also to create passion, intimacy and love inside. The first hotel chairs were designed with a straight back and without armrests, “so balance is achieved only by moving closer to each other, mine is an erotic trick”, said Couëlle. Scenographic architecture designed to integrate but at the same time enhance the beauty of this land.

For the outdoor furnishings, architects Studio Palomba Serfini chose a balanced mixture of local artisans such as Bam Design, Cerasarda, Mariantonia Urru and Walter Usai, and renowned Italian brands like Talenti, Cassina, Molteni and Bonacina. Emerald-green water, beaches of the finest white sand and scenery worthy of a picture-postcard: the beaches of Sardinia are authentic masterpieces of nature. For many years the Costa Smeralda Consortium has been responsible for the protection and care of the twenty-two stunning beaches of the Gallura region, jewel of the Mediterranean. Come with us on an irresistible journey from north to south of this stunning area to explore the very best of these beaches and find out what they have to offer. Our first stop is Liscia Renè, a small bay with breathtaking views. The beach of pink sand flanked by wind-polished rocks plunges into cobalt-blue water dotted here and there with rock formations. After a quick visit to the beach of Dolce Sposa - an idyllic spot with crystal-clear water, exquisite white sand and fragrant mediterranean scrub - we head a little further south to the Gulf of Pevero. The natural architecture of this bay has led to the formation of tiny out-of-theway coves and two much-loved beaches, Grande Pevero and Piccolo Pevero Piccolo Pevero is a sandy beach where the sea is every shade of emerald and blue; the shallow water makes it particularly popular with families and children. Il Consorzio Costa Smeralda da anni si prende cura e si occupa della tutela di ventidue spiagge della zona della Gallura, perle del Mediterraneo. In un itinerario magnetico, da nord a sud, andiamo alla scoperta delle più belle e delle loro caratteristiche. Per prima cosa ci fermiamo a Liscia Renè, piccola baia dai panorami mozzafiato. La sua spiaggia di sabbia rosata, accarezzata da scogli levigati dal vento, si tuffa in acque blu cobalto, punteggiate da formazioni rocciose. Dopo una piccola sosta nella spiaggia di Dolce Sposa, paradiso costiero con acque cristalline, sabbia bianca finissima e vegetazione mediterranea, scendiamo poco più a sud dove si apre il Golfo del Pevero. L’architettura naturale del Golfo ha favorito la formazione di piccole calette appartate e di due amatissime spiagge: il Grande e il Piccolo Pevero. La spiaggia del Piccolo Pevero ha una spiaggia bianca e fine, con un mare color cristallino dalle sfumature smeraldo e azzurre e un fondale poco profondo, particolarmente adatta alle famiglie con i bambini. All’interno dell’area naturalistica di Monti Zoppu e a poca distanza dal Piccolo Pevero c’è la spiaggia del Grande Pevero, spiaggia spaziosa dall’inconfondibile forza a mezzaluna con sabbia fine e bianchissima. The beautiful Romazzino beach which takes its name from romazzinu, a species of rosemary
sandy seabed makes this beach the perfect place for relaxing swims while admiring the views of the Li Nibani islands in the distance. Still on the Monti Zoppu headland, which encloses the Gulf of Pevero, and set in a vast and completely unspoilt natural area, we come to Spiaggia del Cervo, accessible by small boat or via a pleasant walk along a pretty trail. We continue southwards to Romazzino beach, which takes its name from romazzinu, a species of rosemary that grows in the dunes nearby. Close to the beach is the starting point for the two routes of the Pevero Health Trail: easy trekking paths designed to allow walkers to explore the local area. Last but not least, we end our journey with a swim at the wild and secluded Spiaggia del Principe, the favourite beach of Arab prince Karim Aga Khan IV, considered the father of tourist development of this wonderful coast.

Infine, concludiamo con un bagno nell’appartata e selvaggia Spiaggia del Principe, la preferita del principe arabo Karim Aga Khan IV, artefice dello sviluppo turistico di questa costa meravigliosa.

The beauty of the beaches and coves on Sardinia’s north-eastern coast is a well-known fact, but the charms of inland Gallura are less familiar. However, you only need to travel a few kilometres towards the heartland of this region to discover a wild and unspoilt part of Sardinia, where evidence of human activity is reduced to the minimum and you’ll find ancient unpaved roads that snake along the coastline and climb up above rocky walls of centuries-old granite that have been shaped by time and weather. For lovers of hiking and cycling, there are trails winding from the coast up to the headlands. One of the most popular with outdoor sports enthusiasts is the route leading up to the summit of Monte Moro, from where one of the most spectacular views in the whole of the Mediterranean can be enjoyed. Just under 40 kilometers for mountain bikers, the route up Monte Moro
La bellezza delle spiagge e calette della costa nord orientale sarda è una cosa nota; meno conosciuto invece è il fascino dell’entroterra della Gallura. Eppure, basta addentrarsi pochi chilometri verso il centro del territorio gallurese per scoprire una parte della Sardegna selvaggia ed incontaminata, in cui l’intervento dell’uomo è stato ridotto al minimo ed è possibile percorrere vecchie stradine sterrate che si snodano lungo la costa e si arrampicano fino sopra pareti rocciose composte da granito secolari intagliati dalle intemperie e dal tempo. I percorsi per gli appassionati di trekking e bici si snodano a partire dalla Costa e fino ai promontori. Uno tra i più battuti dagli appassionati di questi sport all’aria aperta è quello che porta fino alla cima del Monte Moro. For lovers of history and archaeology, Porto Cervo offers a fascinating itinerary to discover the remains of ancient settlements and immerse yourself in the charm of its remote past and the history of a unique place in the world. The ideal starting point is the Albucciu nuraghe. Surrounded by a landscape of vineyards and pastures, just two and a half kilometres away from the town of Arzachena, the Albucciu nuraghe represents one of the most characteristic and relevant examples of “corridor” building (or protonuraghe), the ancestor of the later nuraghe, although the truncated cone roofs were affected by the subsequent tholos building technique.
Dating back to the Middle Bronze Age (15th century BC), the nuraghe is completely hidden in a tangled grove of olive trees and Mediterranean scrub. What differentiates it from the other nuraghes in the area, is the building technique. The imposing granite blocks were carefully leant against
Per gli amanti della storia e dell’archeologia, Porto Cervo offre un itinerario suggestivo che permette di scoprire i resti di antichi insediamenti e di immergersi nel fascino del suo passato remoto e della storia di un luogo unico al mondo. Il punto di partenza ideale è il nuraghe Albucciu. Immerso in un paesaggio fatto di vigneti e campi destinati al pascolo, ad appena due chilometri e mezzo di distanza dall’abitato arzachenese, il nuraghe Albucciu rappresenta uno dei più caratteristici e rilevanti esempi di edificio “a corridoio”, definiti anche protonuraghe, ossia gli antenati dei nuraghi, anche se le coperture tronco-ogivali risentono della successiva tecnica di edificazione a tholos. Risalente all’età del Bronzo Medio (XV secolo a.C.), il nuraghe è nasosto in un frastagliato boschetto di olivastri e di macchia mediterranea. La peculiarità, che lo differenzia da vari nuraghi della zona, è la tecnica costruttiva. Gli imponenti blocchi di granito furono addossati con cura a un’imponente roccia

Among the most important finds yielded by the site are a gamma-shaped hilt dagger, a votive statuette and ingots. They allow us to date the Albucciu nuraghe to between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age (approximately 1400 – 650 BC).
In addition to the nuraghe, the archaeological area also includes the remains of circular huts 80 metres from the complex, the remains of the Giants’ tomb called Tomba Moro. Not far away is the small nuragic temple of Malchittu The Coddu ‘Ecchju’ archaeological site, one of the most important examples of Nuragic funerary architecture, is located in the Capichera area, about 6 kilometres from the town of Arzachena. It can be reached by taking the provincial road to Luogosanto.

Non lontano si trova anche il tempietto nuragico di Malchittu Il sito archeologico di Coddu ‘Ecchju’, uno dei più importanti esempi di architettura funeraria nuragica trova in località Capichera, a circa 6 chilometri dal centro abitato di Arzachena. Continuing the route, you come across the Li Muri Necropolis, an archaeological site of great importance which houses numerous tombs dating back to the Bronze Age. Located one kilometre from the Tomb of the Giants of Li Lolghi, the Li Muri archaeological site is the oldest site in the archaeological park and dates back to 6000 years ago. The funerary circles are among the oldest testimonies of Western European megaliths and find compelling comparisons in southern Corsica, Catalonia and the French Midi. In Sardinia this type of tomb seems to be widespread only in Gallura, in particular in the Arzachena area. The necropolis is made up of four funerary circles tangent to each other, with a diameter between 5 to 8.5 metres. Inside each circle, a rectangular lithic chest contained one or at most two bodies, in a crouched position. The bottom of the tomb and the bodies were sprinkled with red ochre, a substance that symbolized regeneration.

In Sardegna questo tipo di sepolcro sembra essere diffuso soltanto nel territorio gallurese, in particolare nell’area di Arzachena. La necropoli è composta da quattro circoli funerari tangenti fra loro, di diametro compreso tra i 5 e gli 8,5 metri. All’interno di ciascun circolo, una cassa litica rettangolare conteneva uno o al massimo due corpi, in posizione rannicchiata. Il fondo della tomba e i corpi erano cosparsi di ocra rossa, sostanza che simboleggiava la rigenerazione.

In a season that’s already seeing record numbers of visitors, we met the mayor of Arzachena Roberto Ragnedda to discuss how the town is changing and developing as a destination. Sustainability, the redistribution of tourism flows and, above all, close collaboration between public and private - between the Municipality and the Costa Smeralda Consortium - are among the topics discussed during our interview.
What are the ongoing developments of Costa Smeralda® and of Arzachena area in general: the values, strengths and points of excellence for the tourists of today and tomorrow?

Mauro Pelaschier has made the history of Italian sailing. As an honorary member of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, he has been collaborating with this prestigious club for decades: who could forget Azzurra in 1983, the first Italian boat to take part in the America’s Cup with an all-Italian crew, captained by Cino Ricci, with Pelaschier at the helm, backed by the Aga Khan and Gianni Agnelli. This historic endeavour was launched by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, which today supports emerging talents through the Young Azzurra project, achieving exceptional results with sailors like Federico Alan Pilloni and Cesare Barabino, who are in the running for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The legendary skipper from Monfalcone shares this mission, and this year, teaming up with the Yacht Club Italiano, he secured third place at the Loro Piana Giraglia, navigating three-meter waves with a young crew (the oldest was just 25) and himself at the helm of the Elo II. How did your unforgettable adventure with Azzurra come about?
Cino Ricci contacted me in 1981 while he was in Boston. I had already won several Italian titles and participated in two Olympics with the Finn. He wanted me on the project, and I was enthusiastic. A week later, I was in America sailing with the Enterprise. We spent the winter in Porto Cervo, more focused on team building than training... I remember that we went to collect wood scraps from villas under construction to burn them in the fireplace. What steaks!
Azzurra’s success was a turning point: from that moment on, sailing became a mainstream sport in Italy...
There is no doubt that our efforts were pivotal, but it was also the first major sailing adventure covered by all media. At a time when television did not yet extensively cover sporting events

Dopo una settimana, ero in America a navigare con l’Enterprise. Passammo l’inverno a Porto Cervo, più che ad allenarci, a creare lo spirito di gruppo… Ricordo che andavamo a raccogliere gli scarti di legno delle ville in costruzione per bruciarli nel camino. Che bistecche! Il successo di Azzurra fu uno spartiacque, perché la vela da quel momento diventò di dominio pubblico in Italia…
Non c’è dubbio che il merito sia stato nostro, ma fu anche la prima vera avventura velica raccontata da tutti i media. In un’epoca in cui ancora la televisione non copriva gli eventi sportivi in maniera imponente e a trent’anni della nascita dei social,

and thirty years before social media, Gianni Agnelli ensured that we had the best journalists in the world following us.
The consortium brought together by Agnelli, and the Aga Khan was key to the success of the venture: what was your relationship with them?
The Aga Khan was crucial to the credibility and authority of the crew and the project. Gianni Agnelli was a driving force, curious and passionate. He would arrive in Porto Cervo by helicopter from Rome at lunchtime (he was a Senator at the time), dive into the water, and we would pick him up on board.
What about your commitment to One Ocean Foundation?
Caring for the health of the sea and the planet is a tough game; everything costs, everything requires effort. But we have to start doing something, even in small ways, anywhere. For example, by limiting our excessive use of plastic containers. I talk about this when I visit schools. Children understand it better than adults.

Gianni Agnelli era un grande motore, curioso e appassionato, arrivava a Porto Cervo in elicottero da Roma all’ora di pranzo (al tempo era Senatore), si lanciava in acqua e noi lo recuperavamo a bordo.
Del suo impegno con One Ocean Foundation?
È un gioco difficile occuparsi della salute del mare e del Pianeta, tutto costa, tutto vuole impegno. Ma dobbiamo iniziare a fare qualcosa… Anche nel nostro piccolo, da una qualsiasi parte. Per esempio, dal limitarci nell’uso smodato dei contenitori di plastica. Parlo di questo quando vado nelle scuole. I bambini lo capiscono meglio degli adulti.

What was the strangest request you have ever received from a customer? A few years ago, an important customer asked us for assistance in collecting 200kg of premium quality Pecorino Sardo from a shop in Olbia and loading it onto their aircraft.

Petrizza, the wine from Masone Mannu in Monti, is undoubtedly the most frequently requested label in numerous restaurants. the variety, leading it to become one of the stars of the wine list at fivestar hotels on the Arzachena area, with its Isola dei Nuraghi, Capichera Vendemmia Tardiva and classic Capichera. Vermentino is also the flagship grape at Surrau. The estate’s vineyards lie in the easternmost part of Gallura, in sun-drenched valleys caressed by the fresh Mistral winds from the Strait of Bonifacio. Here the vines take nourishment from the granite sand of the Juannisolu and Capichera hills, the clay of the Pastura and Cascioni plains and the aromas of the mediterranean shrubland in the Surrau valley. Although grape production ranges from Cannonau and Carignano to Muristellu and Cabernet Sauvignon, Vermentino is the most-loved and most often ordered wine on the north-east coast of Sardinia, with its Sciala, Montidimola and Barriu.
