Ora a Capri è il tempo delle ginestre, quelle ginestre care anche a San Costanzo, patrono dell’isola che si festeggia il maggio. Pennellate di giallo che si mischiano al blu del mare e del cielo, potenti come in un quadro di Van Gogh. Sarà per questo che Capri ti entra nel cuore e non ti lascia più. In modo democratico: si innamorano di lei turisti per un giorno, ma anche le star di Hollywood, che si danno appuntamento per un pugno di notti. Tra premiazioni – l’occasione è il Capri Hollywwod Film Festival - e divertissement, un po’ folle e naif come piace agli americani. E’ stato coup de coeur anche per Mariah Carey, la nostra copertina per questo numero , che ha eletto l’isola a suo buen retiro italiano con buona pace degli isolani che accettano un po’ di scompiglio, anche fuori stagione, per questa diva straordinariamente semplice. Del resto il fascino di Capri non è storia recente: ogni primavera, tornando sull’isola, è bello scoprire le tracce di chi è passato di qui e ha dimenticato un pezzetto di sé. Una favolosa estate italiana di Jaqueline Kennedy, la prima di molte a Capri, che per un mese quasi dimenticò di essere la moglie del Presidente. E ancora prima, nel ’ , l’arrivo di Marguerite Youcenar. Anche lei innamorata di Capri. Non di quella colta e elegante, ma di una più intima che la scrittrice aveva percepito sotto il fermento culturale che animava l’isola nel primo dopoguerra. Questa non vuole essere una premessa nostalgica: ieri e oggi in questo pezzetto di terra si fondono, senza soluzione di continuità. A noi non resta che notare e annotare, il passato ma anche il presente: la scultura di Arnaldo Pomodoro per Capri Palace del , la moda per la p/e, che parla di fori contemporanei ma con un occhio agli anni ’ , il bespoke napoletano per lui. Fuori dai confni capresi, Amalf e Ercolano. Now in Capri, it’s time for broom, those brooms that are also dear to Saint Costanzo, patron saint of the island, celebrated every year on the th of May. Brushstroke of yellow mixed with the blue of the sea and of the sky, powerful just like a Van Gogh painting. It is probably for this reason that Capri enters one’s heart and never leaves it. Democratically tourists for one day fall in love with Capri but also Hollywood stars, who decide to meet for a few evenings. Between awards – like Capri Hollywood Film Festival - and entertainment, a bit crazy and naive just the way the Americans like it. It has been love at frst sight also for Mariah Carey, our cover feature for this th edition, who chose the island for her Italian retreat and the people who live on the island accept a bit of chaos, also out of season, for this extremely easy going star. After all the fascination of Capri is not just recent history: every spring, coming back to the island, it is wonderful to fnd the traces of those who have visited and have left a small part of themselves. The fabulous Italian summer of Jaqueline Kennedy, the frst of many in Capri, who for one month almost forgot she was the president’s wife. And earlier on, in , the arrival of Marguerite Youcenar. She was also in love with Capri. Not of the cultured and elegant Capri but of the more intimate side of it, which the writer perceived under the cultural movements that animated the island just after the frst world war. This does not want to be a nostalgic introduction: yesterday and today in this piece of land mix together, without interruption. We can only notice and note down, the past but also the present: the sculptures by Arnaldo Pomodoro for Capri Palace in , the fashion for the s/s, which talks about contemporary fowers but with a glimpse of the s, and bespoke for him. The energy of a rock soul
Quando è nata la passione per la musica?
Avevo anni e giocavo a fare la modella, ma impazzivo già per il canto e barattavo il mio compenso con la possibilità di esibirmi a fne sflata. A 8 anni ho iniziato a fare sul serio, partecipando a festival e concorsi. Poi mi sono imbarcata sulla MSC crociera e lì cantavo nel salone principale.
Cosa ti ha dato l’esperienza di X Factor?
La possibilità di farmi conoscere e molte altre opportunità, come quella di duettare con Ron che mi ha proposto di andare con lui in tournée nel 9. Grazie a lui ho conosciuto Diego Bonanno, il suo bassista, divenuto poi il mio produttore artistico.
Ora esce il tuo EP di 8 brani rock. Hai cambiato genere?
Quando Diego mi propose questo progetto mi disse che mi sentiva più rock. C’è stato subito feeling, perché ho sempre amato questo genere e non mi vedevo bene nel pop. Ora grazie a Sachà Manna, il mio produttore esecutivo, esce questo EP che sarà anticipato da un singolo, una rivisitazione di L’importante è fnire di Mina in versione rock.
Ti riconosci in questo lavoro?
Mi identifco molto. Ho scritto io i testi e sono molto schietti, c’è poca poesia. Ho voluto sfatare il mito dell’uomo bastardo. Tutto l’EP è un po’ ‘maschio’, non difendo la donna.
Qual è il tuo rapporto con Capri?
E’ stato amore dal primo momento. Qualche anno fa, avevo litigato con il mio fdanzato e sono venuta sull’isola a trovare la mia migliore amica. Dovevo fermarmi qualche giorno, ma sono rimasta più di un mese.
Quale ricordo dell’isola ti sta a cuore?
Sono legatissima ai vicoletti, dove passavamo lenotti a suonare la chitarra e a cantare in allegria. E all’Anema e Core, tappa obbligata di ogni soggiorno.
When did you develop a passion for music?
I was and I enjoyed modelling, but I was crazy about music and I was willing to give up my pay to be able to sing at the end of the fashion show. At the age of 8, I started taking part in festivals and contests. Then I signed on an MSC cruise ship as a singer and I performed in the ballroom.
Why was X-Factor been so important to you?
Because it gave me the chance to make myself known to the public and to be able to sing with Ron with whom I toured Italy in 9. Through him, I met Diego Bonanno, his bass player, who later became my producer.
Your EP containing 8 rock tracks is about to be released. Have you changed your genre?
When Diego told me about the project, he said he believed I was more of a rock-type person. I was pleased because I’ve always loved this music genre while pop is not exactly my thing. Now, thanks to my executive producer
Sacha Manna, my EP will be released shortly.
Do you feel that this album is representative of your work?
Yes, I do. I wrote the lyrics and they are very true, not excessively poetic. It’s time to explode the myth of the bastard-type of man. The whole EP is very manly, virile. I do not defend women at all costs.
How do you feel about Capri?
It was love at frst sight. Some years ago, I fell out with my boyfriend and I came to Capri to visit my best friend. I had planned to stay just for a few days, but then I stayed for a whole month.
What is your dearest memory of the island?
I love the small alleys where we used to spend the whole night playing the guitar and singing, and Anema e Core, the must-see club for anybody staying in Capri.

Com’è nata la sua passione per i gioielli?
Mia madre cita spesso un particolare ricordo di qualche anno fa: quando ero piccola e mi portavano in giro nel passeggino, appena vedevo una vetrina di gioielli mi agitavo fno a quando non mi permettevano di osservarla! Si tratta di una passione che mi appartiene da molti anni.
Cosa la attrae maggiormente?
Sono interessata da sempre alle pietre di colore, ma ho scoperto molto tempo dopo che avrei voluto farne la mia vita.
Qual è il leitmotiv delle sue creazioni?
E’ un segreto. No comment.
Qual è il più bel complimento ricevuto per uno dei suoi gioielli?
Una signora americana, dopo qualche giorno dall’acquisto tornò e ci ringraziò per aver creato un anello così speciale e armonioso.
Qual è il suo rapporto con Capri?
Capri rappresenta un’incredibile punto internazionale di ritrovo per migliaia di persone. Pur essendo così piccola ha un fascino unico e intramontabile.
Se Capri fosse un gioiello cosa sarebbe?
Un anello, si chiama Onda. Con il crisoprasio e il cristallo di rocca ricorderebbe il mare per la forma dell’onda e il suo colore cristallino.
Quale immagine le viene in mente se pensa all’isola?
Senza dubbio i Faraglioni e i suoi vicoletti pieni di glicine e bouganville. .
Il suo piatto caprese preferito
La pezzogna all’acqua pazza.
Dove ama fare il bagno?
Amo immergermi nelle acque dei Faraglioni. Il loro colore è unico.
What spurred your passion for jewellery?
My mother often tells a story of several years ago: when I was small and she used to take me out in my pusher, as soon as I saw a jeweller’s window I would start crying until she took me over to look at it. I could say that this is a passion that I’ve had for ages.
What attracts you the most?
I’ve always loved coloured stones and I discovered a long time ago that I wanted to make them my life.
What’s the leitmotiv of your creations?
That’s a secret. No comment.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received for your jewellery?
Once an American woman came back a few days later really moved and thanked us for having created such a beautiful ring that was so harmonious on her hand.
What sort of relationship do you have with Capri?
Capri represents an incredible international meeting place for thousands of people. Despite being so tiny, it has a unique and timeless fascination. .
If Capri were a jewel what would it be?
A ring, called Onda (wave). With chrysoprase and rock crystal reminiscent of the sea, shaped like a wave with a crystalline colour.
What image comes to mind when you think of the island?
Without doubt the Faraglioni and its alleyways brimming with wisteria and bougainvillea. The unmistakable perfume of the sea and the fowers that fll every corner of the island.
Your favourite dish on Capri?

Where do you like swimming?
I love the waters of the Faraglioni. The colour of the sea there is unique.

Sono un esteta, amo la bellezza. Se dovessi classifcare le mie passioni direi che al primo posto c’è l’arte, seguita dalla gastronomia e dal tennis. Procediamo con ordine. Com’è nato l’amore per l’arte?
In famiglia abbiamo sempre coltivato questa passione. Mio padre l’ha trasmessa a noi fgli fn da piccoli. Il suo interesse si ferma alla transavanguardia, il mio è rivolto prevalentemente all’arte contemporanea. Come coltivi la passione per la gastronomia?
La coltivo viaggiando e apprendendo continuamente tecniche nuove. Quella per la gastronomia è una passione che risale a molti anni fa e mi è stata trasmessa da due cari amici: Giorgio Rosolino e Gennaro Esposito. E per il tennis?
Amo lo sport in generale e il tennis in modo particolare. Da poco ho ripreso a praticarlo a livello agonistico. Bisognerebbe organizzare sull’isola un torneo più coinvolgente, che avvicini i giovani a questo sport. non solo isolani ma anche turisti,
Qual è il tuo rapporto con Capri?
La vedo sempre con gli occhi di quando ero piccolo. E’ un rifugio, dove incontro i vecchi amici e dimentico tutto il resto. Per cercare di respirare qualcosa di simile bisogna andare a Saint Tropez.
Quali sono i posti a te cari?
Quando vado a Capri mi fermo almeno tre sere, per andare all’Ulivo da Aurora e ai Faraglioni, prima di scendere in Taverna da Guido Lembo.
Dove ti piace fare il bagno?
Ho la barca e mi piace girare intorno all’isola e fare qualche puntatina in costiera, ma all’ora di pranzo sono sempre da Domenico a Torre Saracena.
Tell us about your passions
I’m an aesthete, I love beauty If I were to classify my passions I could say that frst and foremost there’s art, followed by gastronomy and then tennis.
Let’s proceed in steps. How did you come to love art?
We have always nurtured this passion in my family. My father passed this on to us when we were very young. His interests went as far as the trans-avant-garde, whereas mine go well beyond and focus mainly on contemporary art.
How did you cultivate your passion for gastronomy?
By travelling and continually learning new techniques. My passion for food goes back a long way and was passed on to me by two very dear friends: Giorgio Rosolino and Gennaro Esposito.
And for tennis?
I love sport in general and tennis in particular. I’ve recently starting playing it again at a competitive level. We should organise a more enticing tournament on the island that draws young people towards this sport, What sort of relationship do you have with Capri?
I always see it with the eyes of a child. It’s a shelter, where I meet up with old friends and forget everything else.. To experience something similar you have to go to Saint Tropez.
What are your favourite spots?
Whenever I go to Capri I like to stay at least three nights to visit Ulivo da Aurora and the Faraglioni, before going down to Guido Lembo’s Taverna. Where do you like swimming?
I’ve got a boat and I like going round the island and tying up at different spots but at lunch time you’ll always fnd me at Domenico’s restaurant Torre Saracena.

Com’è nata la tua passione per la moda?
La mia famiglia ha sempre lavorato in questo settore. Lo scorso anno abbiamo festeggiato i anni dell’ azienda, che ha infuenzato il costume e la storia della città. Non ho mai pensato di realizzarmi in altri ambiti.. C’è un incontro che ti ha cambiato la vita?
Quello con Camillo, il mio bulldog inglese. E’ un punto di riferimento. Quando è entrato nella mia vita ho dovuto sconvolgere tutte le mie abitudini,
Qual è il lato più espressivo del tuo carattere?
La solarità e la naturale inclinazione a circondarmi di bellezza. Negli oggetti e nelle persone che frequento deve prevalere questa qualità. Poi l’esuberanza, tipica di chi ama la vita

Com’è nata l’idea del Salone Margherita Barbaro?
Il Salone Margherita è da sempre della mia famiglia ed è stato naturale decidere di aprirlo alla città e ai numerosi turisti che ospitiamo con grande piacere. E’ un monumento che curiamo con dedizione, consapevoli della sua grandezza e del suo valore storico.
Cosa rappresenta per te Capri?
Capri per me é quella che fu tra gli anni ’ e ’ . Mi piace sognare che tutto sia rimasto com’era in certi flm in bianco e nero o documentari che ancora oggi trasmette la televisione.
Il tuo piatto caprese preferito?
Tutti i piatti a base di pesce e la torta caprese di cui sono ghiottissima!
How did your passion for fashion start?
My family has always worked in this sector. Last year we celebrated the th anniversary of the company that has infuenced the custom and the history of the city. I have never thought of doing anything else, Is there anything you’ve met that has changed your live?
The one with Camillo, my English bulldog. He is a landmark. What is the most expressive side of your character?
The radiance and the natural inclination to surround myself with beauty. In the objects and in the people I frequent this quality must prevail. But then again for many the exuberance, typical of those who love life
Three adjectives to describe yourself…
Unpredictable, generous, ingenious. And when I say ingenious I mean that I am capable of changing the rules, also commercially, and making any dress or hat a great success.
How did the idea of the Salone Margherita Barbaro come about?
The Salone Margherita has always been my family’s and it was natural for us to decide to open it to the city and to the numerous tourists that we give hospitality to with enormous pleasure. It is a monument that we take care of with great dedication, often we are in loss but we are aware of its grandness and its historic value.
What is Capri for you?
Capri for me is what it was in the ’s and ’s. I like to dream that everything has remained as it was in some of those black and white flms that one can still see on television.
Your favourite local dish?
All fsh based dishes and the famous ‘caprese’ cake which I absolutely love!

C’è un incontro che ti ha cambiato la vita?
Quello con David Lynch, che mi ha insegnato il cinema e mi ha iniziato alla meditazione trascendentale che pratico costantemente. E quello con Pupi Avati, un grande maestro, di cui sono stato assistente alla regia in Una sconfnata giovinezza, con Fabrizio Bentivoglio e Francesca Neri. I tuoi ultimi lavori
Ho realizzato per mio padre l’adattamento cinematografco di Parlami di me, il musical scritto da Enrico Vaime e Maurizio Costanzo. Ho ripreso lo spettacolo live integrandolo con scene inedite e del backstage. Inoltre ho fatto uno spot no proft per la comunità di Sant’Egidio con il quale ho vinto un premio al Festival di Ischia e al Festival dei Tulipani di Seta Nera. Progetti per il futuro?
Sto ultimando la sceneggiatura di un progetto sperimentale che vorrei realizzare quest’estate: un flm horror indipendente e autoprodotto. Poi sto fnendo di montare uno spot indipendente su una campagna antifumo e ho acquistato i diritti di un libro, scritto da Elena P. Melodia, che s’intitola Buio. Un thriller soprannaturale che dovrebbe essere il mio primo grande flm.
Cosa rappresenta per te Capri?
Capri è il ricordo di una vita: la passeggiata da piccolo ai Giardini di Augusto, la vecchia pannocchia di Scialapopolo, l’odore di gelsomino, il pollo al mattone mangiato alle Grottelle, i limoni di Paolino e le ostriche al pomodoro di Bertuccio.
Il tuo momento più bello sull’isola?
Sono fdanzato con Lavinia da 8 anni, il primo week end d’amore l’abbiamo fatto a Capri. Come si fa l’amore sull’isola non si fa da nessuna parte.
Which meetings changed your life?
The one with David Lynch, who taught me what cinema really is and introduced me to transcendental meditation which I practice regularly. And also the meeting with Pupi Avati, a great maestro, who I was assistant director for in Una sconfnata giovinezza, with Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Francesca Neri.
Your latest productions?
I adapted the screenplay of the musical written by Enrico Vaime and Maurizio Costanzo called Parlami di me, for my father. I used the live show and integrated it with new scenes and backstage parts. In addition, I have also made a non-proft spot for the Sant’Egidio Community for which
Your future projects?
I’m currently fnishing the screenplay for an experimental project that I would like to launch this summer. It’s an independent, self-produced horror flm. Plus I’m also fnishing an independent spot for an antismoking campaign and I’ve bought the rights for a book by Elena P. Melodia, called Buio. A supernatural thriller that should be my frst big movie.
What does Capri mean to you?
Capri is the memory of a lifetime: as a child walking in the Giardini di Augusto, corn on the cob at the Scialapopolo kiosk, the perfume of jasmine, chicken grilled under a brick at Le Grottelle restaurant, the lemons of Paolino and Bertuccio’s oysters with tomatoes.
Your most magical moment on the island?
I’ve been engaged to Lavinia for 8 years, we spent our very frst weekend together on Capri. Making love on this island is like nowhere else in the world.

Da quanti anni appartieni al mondo della notte?
Dal 99 . Appena compiuti 8 anni ho iniziato a lavorare all’Anema e Core. Era il suo terzo anno di vita ed era un successo in continua crescita.
Com’è cambiata la notte caprese?
Quando è nata Anema e Core sull’isola c’erano ancora taverne storiche, come il Guarracino, Sette Bello e la Taverna degli Amici. Noi abbiamo dato continuità a questo tipo di divertimento, Siamo andati oltre la musica d’ascolto, coinvolgendo il pubblico nel ballo sfrenato sui tavoli.
Cosa rappresenta per te Anema e Core?
La famiglia, la passione e il lavoro. Dalla Taverna è iniziato tutto.
Invece cosa rappresenta per Capri?
Negli anni è diventata un’attrattiva, non solo un semplice locale notturno al servizio del turismo. Ancora oggi c’è gente che viene a Capri per scendere in Taverna. Questo ci fa onore, ma bisogna offrire anche altro.
Come il Bye Bye Baby e Le Clochard?
Le prospettive del by night caprese sono in evoluzione. La sfda è far nascere un movimento notturno, creando offerte che spingano in diverse direzioni. Penso a Ibiza, isola meno ricca di storia della nostra, che ha fondato sulla notte il suo successo.
Il tuo rapporto con Capri
Sono nato e cresciuto qui. Amo l’isola e gli isolani. I miei amici, i miei affetti e la mia famiglia sono a Capri. In inverno molti sono portati a evadere, perché l’isola offre pochissimo, io stesso cerco di passare del tempo a Napoli, ma il richiamo è fortissimo e appena posso rientro.
A quali luoghi sei più legato?
I miei ricordi d’infanzia e i miei amici di sempre sono a Marina Grande. Quando penso a Capri e non sono sull’isola penso al porto.
How long have you belonged to Capri’s nightlife?
Since 99 . On turning 8 I began working at Anema e Core which had been going for years and was becoming increasingly more successful. How has Capri’s nightlife changed?
When Anema e Core opened on the island there were still historic taverns such as Il Guarracino, Sette Bello and the Taverna degli Amici. We have given continuity to this type of entertainment, changing its style a bit. We’ve gone beyond just listening to music, involving the public in wild dancing on the tables as well.
What does Anema e Core mean to you?
Family, passion and work. Everything began with the Taverna. Instead, what does it mean for Capri?
Over the years it has become an attraction, not simply a night club for tourists. Nowadays people come to Capri to go down into the Taverna. This is very fattering but it’s also necessary to offer other things as well.
Such as Bye Bye Baby and Le Clochard?
The outlook for nightlife in Capri is still evolving. The challenge is to give birth to a night-time movement by creating offers that branch out in different directions. Just think of Ibiza, an island with less history than ours that has based its success on the nightlife it offers.
Your relationship with Capri?
I was born and raised here. I love this island and the islanders. My friends, my affections and my family are all on Capri. In winter many people leave the island as it offers so little and I myself move to Naples. .
What are your favourite spots?
My childhood memories and my friends all revolve around Marina Grande. Whenever I’m not here and I think of Capri, I think of the port.

Norman Douglas e Capri: i suoi libri
Le ragioni della presenza di alcuni personaggi a Capri si nascondono tra le righe dei loro scritti o all’interno dell’opera da loro creata. Tra questi autori quello che meglio rappresenta un travagliato e straordinario legame amoroso con Capri è sicuramente Norman Douglas, scrittore austro-scozzese che dagli inizi del Novecento fno alla sua morte nel , ha dedicato all’isola molti suoi scritti. Se vogliamo individuare, quelli più rappresentativi di questo
lungo sodalizio, dovremmo evidenziarne cinque. Capri - Materiali per una descrizione dell’isola, stampato per la prima volta in inglese dall’editore forentino Orioli nel (prima edizione in italiano del , editore Frassinelli, oggi non più in commercio) composto da una serie di monografe dedicate a vari aspetti ed emergenze dell’isola. Vento del sud pubblicato in inglese nel e oggi disponibile in italiano, nelle edizioni La Conchiglia. Romanzo in cui l’autore crea un’isola fantastica, Nepente, che è una perfetta sintesi di tante isole visitate, studiate e amate. Da questa mescolanza nasce la simbiosi tra Nepente e Capri, che è essa stessa sintesi di tante
altre realtà insulari e per questo isola per eccellenza. In questo capolavoro Douglas palesa la sua perfetta coscienza della natura più intima dell’isola, quale luogo capace di trasformare e sconvolgere le personalità più forti, e le convinzioni più radicate.

The reasons behind some writers’ stay in Capri are usually hidden within the books they wrote. Among them, he who certainly personifes an extraordinary love bond with Capri is Norman Douglas, the Austrian-Scottish writer who, from the early s to his death in , devoted a number of writings to the island. Douglas lived for long periods in Capri and was buried in the local non-
Catholic cemetery. Among his many writings representative of his life-long passion for Capri, fve, in particular, are worth mentioning:
Capri- Materials for a Description of the Island, the frst edition was published in English by Florentine publisher Orioli in (the frst edition in Italian was published in by Frassinelli, currently out of print). It consists of a series of monographs on different aspects of the island, revealing the author’s intimate and deep knowledge of the island’s history and natural treasures.
South Wind, published in English in and also available in Italian published by Edizioni La Conchiglia. The novel in set on an imaginary island,
Nepenthe, which is the perfect synthesis of the many islands the writer visited, studied and loved. Nepenthe is also a fctionalized description of Capri, the island “par excellence”. Douglas reveals, once again, his familiarity with the island as a place capable of transforming even the strongest personalities and shacking the deepest-rooted opinions.
A Footnote on Capri- published in in English and for the frst time in Italian in by Edizioni La Conchiglia. It is Douglas’s last published work and a fnal tribute to the history of his beloved island. A book which conveys the complexity
of a very small island, from the geographical point of view, but huge in historical and naturalistic terms.
Siren Land- published in English in and available in Italian published by Edizioni La Conchiglia. To Douglas, the appeal toward this land was so hard to resist that he compared Capri and the Sorrentine Penisula to a siren song, of which he heard the mysterious voices and felt the ancient presences. L’isola di Capri è più bella dal mare o dalla terra? L’impareggiabile colore dell’acqua rende unico il bagno nelle sue cale. Ma proprio girandola in barca si scrutano tratti di costa costituiti dall’alta falesia calcarea con fenditure e grotte sormontate da una ricca vegetazione autoctona al centro delle quali sorgono nascosti veri e propri angoli di storia, divenuti mete irrinunciabili per la magnifca vista di cui si gode.
Belvedere Cannone
Sulla posizione strategica di questo pianoro, oggi uno tra i belvedere più frequentati dell’isola, i francesi piazzarono nel 8 8 un cannone per la difesa del settore sud. Nel ‘9 , durante il soggiorno della folta colonia di artisti tedeschi che vi sostavano per dipingere, prese il nome di Mahler Platte o Piazzetta dei Pittori.
Da qui si ammirano i Faraglioni, lo Scoglio delle Sirene, la Certosa, i Giardini di Augusto e la Grotta delle Felci, importante stazione preistorica, dove sono stati rinvenuti reperti databili dall’era paleolitica all’età del bronzo.
Punta Cannone è raggiungibile dalla piazza attraverso la famosa via Castello, che congiunge il paese al Monte Castiglione.
Arco Naturale
Questo ardito Arco è la parte superstite di una grande grotta che si addentrava nella montagna. I futti del mare ne ampliarono l’apertura e asportarono i detriti. Dopo il sollevamento dell’isola in età paleolitica, la grotta fu sottratta all’azione erosiva delle onde e il vento e la pioggia ne trasformarono la superfcie.
Da qui è possibile ammirare tutta la baia della Grotta Bianca e punta Massullo, sulla quale è costruita Villa Malaparte.
Dall’Arco Naturale una scalinata conduce alla grotta di Matermania, dove nasce un sentiero che si snoda lungo i dirupi che costeggiano il mare e che conduce alla via Pizzolungo, famosa per il suo belvedere.
Pizzolungo
Questo sentiero congiunge la grotta di Matermania a Punta Tragara e regala emozioni indescrivibili passo dopo passo. Lungo il suo percorso si susseguono scale, ripide salite e vertiginose discese, ma una volta giunti al suo belvedere lo scenario è sublime. Un balconcino, quasi un palchetto teatrale che si affaccia su uno degli spettacoli più famosi del mondo: i tre faraglioni, completati, nelle serate di plenilunio, dal satellite della terra, da qui visibile per volontà astrale al centro tra Scopolo, o Faraglione di Fuori, e il Faraglione di mezzo. Proseguendo per Pizzolungo si arriva in uno degli angoli più romantici dell’isola.
Tragara
Via Tragara, suggestiva e panoramica, è stata costruita in epoca romana e conduce all’Hotel Punta Tragara, ideato dall’architetto Le Corbusier. Accanto all’hotel sorge l’omonimo belvedere, una vera terrazza sui Faraglioni, da cui si riesce a scorgere sulla sinistra parte della Costiera Amalftana e sulla destra l’abitato con le case arrampicate sui pendii, il Monte Castiglione sovrastato dal castello, la baia di Marina Piccola e il Monte Solaro.

But if you circle the island by boat you can see the features of the coastline formed by the high limestone cliffs with crevices and caves that are covered by a rich native vegetation and in the centre of these true hidden corners of history arise, and have become, must-see destinations offering such magnifcent views.
Cannone viewpoint
In 8 8 the French placed a cannon to defend the southern area on the strategic position of this table land which today is amongst the most visited panoramic view points of the island. It was in the 9 ’s when the numerous colonies of German artists visited it to paint that this place got its name of Mahler Platte or Painters’ Square.
From here it is possible to admire the Sea Stacks, the Siren’s Rock, the Monastery, The Gardens of Augustus and the Cave of Ferns, an important prehistoric station where archeological exhibits have been found that date from the Paleolithic era to the Bronze age. Punta Cannone can be reached from the square by taking the famous Castello street that connects the city to Mount Castiglione.
The Natural Arch
This bold Arch is the remains of a large cave that once penetrated into the mountain. The waves of the ocean widened the opening of the cave and removed all the rubble. After the uplifting of the island during the Paleolithic era, the cave escaped the erosive action of the waves and the wind and rain transformed its surface. From this point it is possible to admire the whole bay of the White Cave and the Massullo peak, on which Villa Malaparte is built. From the Natural Arch steps lead to Matermania Cave, where a path begins and winds along the cliffs that skirt the sea and leads to Pizzolungo, famous for its panoramic view.
Pizzolungo
This path connects Matermania cave to Tragara peak and step after step offers indescribable emotions. Along its route one fnds, staircase after staircase and steep and dizzy slopes, but once one reaches the viewpoint, the scenery is sublime. A small terrace, which almost resembles a small theatre box, faces one of the most famous theatres in the world: the three Sea Stacks, complemented by the Earth’s own satellite, in the evening when there is a full moon it is visible from here and by some kind of astral will is placed right at the centre between Scopolo or the outer sea stack and the middle sea stack. Continuing along to Pizzolungo one reaches one of the most romantic corners of the island.
Tragara Tragara, striking with its beautiful view, was built during the Roman era and leads to Hotel Punta Tragara, which was created by the architect Le Corbusier. Located next to the Hotel is the viewpoint of the same name, a real balcony on the Sea stacks, from which one can see the Amalf Coastline on the left hand side and on the right hand side the village with houses perched on the cliffs, Mount Castiglione overlooking the castle, the Marina Piccola bay and Mount Solaro.

Monte Solaro
Il Monte Solaro è caratterizzato da un versante est e sud-est profondamente eroso e a picco sul mare e da un’ampia proda degradante verso l’abitato di Anacapri, caratterizzata da una rigogliosa vegetazione spontanea e d’immigrazione, che conta più di 85 specie. Dalla sua sommità, posta a 589 metri sul livello del mare si apre un’incomparabile visione aerea dell’isola che spazia dal Golfo di Napoli a quello di Salerno, passando per la piana di Anacapri, la penisola sorrentina, Capri e i Faraglioni.
Ma lo spettacolo visivo inizia in Via Caposcuro, nei pressi di piazza Vittoria, dove è situata la stazione della seggiovia che permette di accedere da Anacapri alla sommità del Monte, attraverso un percorso di dodici minuti da trascorrere tra costruzioni tipiche, forente vegetazione e l’immagine in lontananza dell’isola d’Ischia.
La Migliera
L’attuale via ricalca l’antico tracciato della strada romana che da Capodimonte, fne della scala greco-romana, attraversava la parte a monte del territorio di Anacapri, per raggiungere il Belvedere mozzafato che si affaccia a strapiombo sulle cale del Tuoro e del Limmo, e termina, questa, con la Punta Carena ed il Faro. Merita una visita il bellissimo Parco Filosofco, creazione dello svedese Gunnar Adler-Karlsson. Nei sentieri sparsi nell’incontaminata macchia mediterranea si possono trovare oltre 6 citazioni dei più importanti pensatori e flosof. Fino al secolo scorso si potevano trovare frantumi di fabbriche e frammenti di intonaci colorati, facenti parte di un insediamento romano.
Mount Solaro
Mount Solaro is characterized by its eastern and south-eastern slope that is deeply eroded and steep overlooking the sea and by a wide shore reaching towards the inhabited area of Anacapri, which in turn is characterized by a rigorous spontaneous and immigrated vegetation, that contains more than 85 varieties. From its summit, at 589 meters above sea level, one can see an incomparable air view of the island that ranges from the Gulf of Naples to the gulf of Salerno, passing through the Anacapri plain, the Sorrentine peninsula, Capri and the Sea Stacks. But the visual show begins in Caposcuro, near Victoria Square where you fnd the chair-lift that takes you to the summit of the Mountain from Annacapri with a minute route passing over characteristic constructions, fourishing vegetation and the view of Ischia island in the far distance.
La Migliera
The modern street traces the ancient layout of the Roman street that from Capodimonte, marked as the end of the Greek-Roman stair, crosses the area upstream to the territory of Anacapri, to reach the breathtaking view that overlooks the inlets of Tuoro and Limmo and ends with the Carena peak and the Lighthouse. The beautiful view of the Philosophic Park, which was created by Swedish Gunner AdlerKarlsson is worth a visit. In the scattered paths of the uncontaminated Mediterranean patch one can fnd over 6 quotations by the most important philosophers and speculators. Up until the last century it was possible to fnd fragments of factories and colored plasters, which were part of a Roman settlement.

Mariah Carey ama Capri. Ama quei piccoli ristorantini, quell’aria frizzante anche d’inverno, quella silenziosa solitudine della Capri fuori stagione. Però l’ultima volta che è approdata sull’isola azzurra, per il festival Capri, Hollywood curato dal suo amico Pascal Vicedomini, tanto sola non era. Quando però si riesce a parlarci, in quei pochi momenti in cui siamo vicini ad una delle più grandi leggende del pop contemporaneo, l’impressione è di straordinaria genuinità. E’ semplice, nonostante i 5 milioni di dischi venduti in tutto il mondo e la straordinaria presenza mediatica. Nonostante sia considerata una delle donne più sexy del mondo. Sta scrivendo i testi per il nuovo album ma si parla soprattutto di cinema, del nuovo flm che inizierà a girare a giugno e del ruolo, piccolo ma incisivo e determinante in Precious. E lei ci tiene a ribadire che: “Non voglio fare la star. Voglio interpretare flm anche piccoli, indipendenti, ma con storie che amo. Film che la gente deve vedere, perché sono importanti”.
Nel frattempo Precious ha vinto due Oscar: per l’attrice Mo’Nique, rivelazione assoluta, e per la miglior sceneggiatura. Ha incassato 5 milioni di dollari, più di cinque volte quanto è costato. E il suo straordinario cammino tra i premi internazionali è iniziato proprio da Capri. Dal Capri Award consegnato a Mariah Carey.
Il flm narra la storia di una ragazzina di colore, obesa, semianalfabeta, violentata dal padre e dalla madre. Una ragazzina sola che vaga in una Harlem sinonimo di immondezzaio della vita stessa. Che cosa lega un flm così duro a un’icona pop. Ad una star che ha venduto 6 milioni di dischi in tutto il mondo, a un’icona mediatica come Mariah Carey? Niente, in apparenza. Eppure Mariah ha accettato la sfda: si è imbruttita, si è struccata, si è infagottata in abiti di due taglie più grandi. Dimessa, con gli occhi fssi dentro l’orrore di una vita spaventosa.
Mariah Carey loves Capri. She loves those small restaurants, that crisp air even in wintertime, Capri’s silent wilderness out of season. However, the last time she was seen on the island for the Capri, Hollywood Festival curated by her friend Pascal Vicedomini, she was certainly not alone. When we got the chance to talk to her, to spend a few moments with one of the greatest legends of contemporary pop music, she struck us as being an extraordinarily easy person, in spite of the 5 million records sold worldwide and her tremendous media presence, although she is one of the sexiest women in the world. She is now busy writing the lyrics for her new album, but we mostly talked about flms, about the new flm she will be appearing in and about her small and yet incisive role in Precious. And she wanted to say quite clearly that: “I don’t care to be a star. I would rather play in small, independent movies, but telling a story I like. Films that people should watch because they are important”.
Precious won two Academy Awards: for best supporting actress (Mo’Nique) and for best adapted screenplay. It made $ 5 million, fve times as much as it cost. The flm was awarded its frst prize in Capri, the Capri Award given to Mariah Carey.
The flm tells the story of an obese, illiterate young girl who suffers sexual abuse from her mother and father and lives in the ghetto of Harlem. What does such a powerful and shocking flm have to do with a pop and media icon such as Mariah Carey? Nothing, on the face of it. Nonetheless, Mariah took up the challenge: she accepted to appear ugly, without make-up, wearing shapeless clothes twice her size, shabby, with a fxed gaze onto a horrible life. Nel flm, è una specie di assistente sociale. La ragazza si rivolge a lei, disincantata le chiede: “Lei com’è? Nera, ispanica, cosa?”. In effetti, è proprio una delle cose che viene da chiedersi circa le origini di Mariah Carey. Nel suo Dna c’è sangue irlandese, venezuelano e nero. In realtà e soprattutto dal vivo è davvero una splendida ragazza.
Miss Carey, la sua scelta di interpretare un piccolo ruolo in un flm indipendente è una scelta forte.
E’ stata una scelta istintiva, e subito chiara. Come nella musica. Io mi sento una songwriter, un’autrice di canzoni prima ancora di una cantante. Scrivo canzoni da quando avevo sei anni. Non amo apparire. Ci sono delle popstar che cambiano look ogni cinque minuti. Io no. Per il flm, è stata la stessa cosa. Cercavo una storia interessante, forte, non una storia in cui apparire carina….
Nel flm si parla di rapporti incesuosi. Un tema molto forte.
Sì, si parla di esperienze molto dure, che segnano la vita profondamente. Non credo che i flm si facciano solo per dimenticare la realtà.
Nel flm lei è quasi irriconoscibile
Il regista mi ha detto: vedrai, non ti riconoscerà neanche tua madre! Ed era vero! Quando mi rivedo sullo schermo, mi dico: ma chi è questa qui?.
C’è un periodo del cinema italiano che ha avuto su di lei una infuenza particolare?
Il cinema degli anni ’6 , La dolce vita, o La ciociara di cui in Precious, vediamo anche una sequenza. Film come quelli mi hanno sempre emozionato. E poi, il mio cuore è rimasto dentro l’immaginario del cinema classico. Quello americano, ma anche i grandi capolavori del cinema italiano.
Nel futuro, quali registi vorrebbe avere vicino?
Potendo sognare, direi Scorsese e Woody Allen. Ma soprattutto sono le storie che mi interessano, voglio storie importanti. Fare l’attrice non è per me un capriccio da diva, ma una scelta consapevole.
Come del resto hanno fatto Barbra Streisand o Diana Ross Certo. Ci sono altre cantanti che hanno fatto l’attrice in modo superbo.
Questo flm è lontanissimo dall’immagine che lei dà di sé nei concerti.
Non mi sento a una dimensione soltanto. Sono Mariah nei concerti, e lo sono nel cinema. Io al cinema voglio storie forti, importanti, necessarie a far rifettere. Potrei anche interpretare me stessa, se fosse un musical. Il desiderio è comunque quello di potermi trasformare. Sto ancora imparando lo so, non voglio sfruttare la mia popolarità e non voglio riproporre cose già viste.
Il suo sogno di attrice?
Quello di entrare in personaggi lontani da me.

It was an instinctive choice, but a clear one too. Like with music: I consider myself more of a songwriter than a singer. I’ve been writing songs since I was six. I am not obsessed with my looks. Some pop stars change their look over and over again. I don’t. It was the same for the flm. I was looking for an interesting, powerful story, not for one that would make me look pretty.
The flm deals with incestuous relationships. A very serious issue.
Yes, the flm is about hard experiences in life that leave their mark on you. Films cannot merely be an escape from real life.
You are nearly unrecognizable in the flm…
The flm director told me: “Believe me, not even your mother is going to recognize you!”. And he was right. When I watch myself on screen, I say: “Who is this woman?”
Have you been infuenced by a specifc period of Italian cinema?
The movies of the sixties, La dolce vita or La Ciociara of which we see a scene in Precious. I’ve always been moved by those flms. I love classic movies, in general. The great American and Italian classics.
Which flm directors would you like to work with in the future?
If I were free to choose anyone, Scorsese or Woody Allen.
But I’m more interested in the flm’s story, in important stories. I view acting not as a whim of fancy, but as a well thought-out choice.
As is the case with Barbra Streisand or Diana Ross.. Yes, and there are other singers who are also amazing actresses.
This flm conveys an image of you very different from the one we are used to seeing at your concerts.
I am Mariah at the concerts as well as in the movies. I’m interested in powerful stories that make people refect on what they have just seen. I could even play myself in a musical, but I enjoy transforming myself into characters. I’m still learning, I don’t want to take advantage of my popularity and I don’t want to play the usual roles. What do you dream of as an actress?
I dream of playing characters who are very different from me.

Giuseppe Tornatore. La passione per la fotografa diventa cinema
The passion for photography becomes cinema
Quando Giuseppe Tornatore era un ragazzino, girava per le strade della sua Bagheria, con una macchina fotografca in mano. Ritraeva tutto ciò che gli suscitava interesse: i volti della gente, le strade, i carretti, i ragazzini, i muri sbrecciati. Aveva pochi anni e tanti sogni e forse già una voglia ancora sopita di cinema. Negli anni, durante i suoi numerosi viaggi, ha fermato tante e tante immagini, tradotte poi in una mostra allestita al museo della fotografa Fratelli Alinari di Firenze. Una di queste foto ritraeva suo padre: volto da attore, dignità assorta, sigaretta tra le dita, cravatta stropicciata. Forse da quella fotografa è partito il sogno del suo ultimo flm. Raccontare la vita della Sicilia così come era. Baaria è un affresco storico, ma anche un flm intimo. E’ anche il ritratto di suo padre?
Sì. Mio padre era soprattutto una persona perbene. Credeva nell’onestà, nel lavoro e nella politica. Ed è stato tradito dalla politica, lui che era fedele al suo partito. Non è mai diventato ricco, non ha mai avuto il successo che meritava. Adesso il suo flm, dopo il grande successo italiano, si prepara a essere visto in molti altri paesi del mondo. Che effetto potrà fare all’estero?
Io penso che in tutto il mondo ci sia il sentimento di che cosa è la provincia, di che cosa sia un microcosmo. Tutti i piccoli paesi si assomigliano. Io credo che Bagheria sia come ogni altro piccolo paese. Purtroppo, non era possibile girare in Sicilia: è cambiato tutto, ci sono cartelli, le insegne, le luci. Quel mondo non esiste più. Lo abbiamo ricostruito in Tunisia, ricreando le strade, la piazza. E dove non siamo riusciti a ricostruire, abbiamo ricreato al computer. La prova più diffcile è stata quando abbiamo fatto vedere il flm a Bagheria, la mia città. L’applauso che ho avuto mi ha commosso, davvero. I vecchi erano in lacrime, e anche io trattenevo a stento il pianto.
Che ricordi ha della sua infanzia, del suo paese?
Quel piccolo paese della Sicilia è stato tutto per me. La vita si svolge in poche centinaia di metri, tra poche case e piazze. Ma attraversandole e percorrendole avanti e indietro puoi imparare ciò che il mondo non saprà mai insegnarti. Il paese, la provincia è importante. Ti aiuta a capire quello che succede lontano.
E come è nata la sua passione per il cinema?
Prima è nata quella per la fotografa. D’estate, da ragazzo, lavoravo come stampatore, per guadagnare qualcosa e fnanziare i miei primi flmini in super otto. Stampavo le foto dei dilettanti. Si vedeva di tutto in quelle foto, si vedeva la gioia, la felicità della famiglia italiana, del boom economico. A me piaceva moltissimo la magia del momento in cui vedevo afforare l’immagine dalla bacinella dello sviluppo. E credo
When Giuseppe Tornatore was a boy, he used to wonder through the streets of his Bagheria, with a camera in his hand. He photographed anything that aroused his interest: people’s faces, roads, carts, boys, falling down walls. He was very young and had lots of dreams and perhaps already a sleepy desire of cinema. Over the years, during his numerous travels, he has shot lots and lots of images, in an exhibition held at the Fratelli Alinari photographic museum in Florence. One of these photos was of his father: a close up of an actor, engrossed dignity, cigarette between his fngers, creased tie. Probably that photograph generated the dream of his lastest flm. Recounting life in Sicily exactly like it was Baaria is a historic fresco, but also an intimate flm. Does it also portray your father?
Yes. My father was mainly a ‘proper’ person. He believed in honesty, in work and in politics. And he was betrayed by politics, he who was faithful to his party. He never became rich, he never had the success he deserved. Your flm, after great success in Italy, is getting ready to be seen in many other countries in the world. What will reactions be like abroad?
I think that all over the world there is the awareness of what is a suburb, of what a micro-cosmos is. All small towns are similar. I think that Bagheria is like any other small town. Unfortunately, it was not possible to shoot in Sicily: everything has changed, there are signs, lights. That world does not exist anymore. We have rebuilt it in Tunisia, recreating the streets and the piazzas. And what we haven’t managed to rebuild we have recreated on computer. The most diffcult challenge was when we showed the flm in Bagheria, my city. The applause we received really moved me. The elderly people were in tears and I had to try hard not to cry.
What are your memories of your childhood, of your town?
That small town in Sicily has been everything for me. Life is developed in those limited few hundreds of meters, Your life takes place in just a couple of hundred metres, between not many houses and piazzas. But walking backwards and forwards and going through them you can learn things that the world will never be able to teach you. The town, the suburb is important. It helps one understand what happens far away. How did your passion for cinema grow?
My frst passion was photography. In the summer, when I was a boy, I worked as a printer, in order to earn something and fnance my frst cine-flms in super eight. I printed amateur photographs. One used to see all sorts of things in those photos, joy, the happiness of Italian families, the economic

che tutto quello che ho imparato sia stato fondamentale per il mio cinema. Ho imparato lì come si compone una inquadratura, il gioco delle luci, il chiaroscuro, l’importanza delle proporzioni. Tutto in una immagine.
Quando ha capito che fare fotografa era fare arte?
Quando ho iniziato, in Sicilia, non sapevo neanche che ci fosse chi faceva le fotografe ‘d’arte’, né che ci fossero degli artisti. Era una passione mia, istintiva, selvaggia. E ancora adesso, se scatto una foto, parte prima l’istinto. Solo dopo, quando la sviluppo, mi accorgo che c’è un gioco di linee, in quella foto, oppure un tema cromatico, un colore che emerge. Ma la testa arriva sempre dopo: prima arriva il cuore, l’istinto.
Com’è oggi la Sicilia?
Credo che il Sud d’Italia abbia un potenziale di creatività enorme. Credo che sia una terra meravigliosa, e ancora con tanti problemi. Risponderei citando Leonardo Sciascia, scrittore che ho amato moltissimo: ‘Si è siciliani con diffcoltà’.
Quando ha iniziato a pensare a un flm sulla storia del suo paese?
Da quando sono adolescente. E’ da quando sono ragazzo che raccolgo fogli, pezzi di carta con aneddoti, personaggi, frasi del paese. Un giorno mi serviranno per fare un flm, mi dicevo. E’ successo davvero, alla fne. E’ bastato aspettare quarant’anni.
boom. I loved the magic moment when the photograph came to light in the developing basin. And I think that everything I learnt has been fundamental to my cinema. There I learnt how to compose a frame, games of light, chiaroscuro, the importance of proportions. All in one image. When did you understand that doing photography was a work of art?
When I started, in Sicily, I didn’t even know that there were people who took ‘art’ photographs, nor that there were artists. It was my passion, instinctive, wild. And still even now, if I take a photo, instinct is the frst impulse. Only after, when I develop it I realise that there is a game of lines in that photograph or a chromatic theme, a colour that emerges. But the mind always comes later: frst comes heart and instinct. What is Sicily like today?
I think that the south of Italy has an enormous creative potential. I think it’s a marvellous land and still with a lot of problems. I’d like to answer quoting Leonardo Sciascia, a writer who I loved very much: ‘One is Sicilian with diffculty’. When did you start thinking about a flm on the history of your town?
Since I was an adolescent. I have been collecting papers with anecdotes since I was a boy, personalities, town phrases. One day, I used to say to myself, I will need them for the shooting of a flm. It has happened, fnally. It took 40 years of waiting.

Sguardo limpido, penetrante. Proflo di un felino: leggiadro, armonico, ma che nasconde la potenza e la forza che appartengono a pochi. Incantarsi a guardare Eleonora Abbagnato sul palcoscenico è facile. Si capisce come sia diventata così famosa anche tra chi non è cultore della danza, ma il vero incantesimo si manifesta incontrandola. Mette quasi a disagio per la sua bellezza. L’elasticità del suo corpo le permette movimenti e posizioni innaturali e si sottopone a continue sollecitazioni. Sembra in gabbia, non riesce a fermarsi un attimo. A Capri la incontriamo ogni anno a giugno e ci confda che non rinuncerebbe mai ai festeggiamenti dei gemelli Giuseppe e Ferruccio De Lorenzo, suoi cari amici che compiono gli anni proprio in questa stagione. Quando è nata la passione per la danza?
Ho iniziato a quattro anni in una piccola scuola privata di Palermo, vicino al negozio di abbigliamento di mia madre. Volevo stare sempre lì con Marisa Benassai, la mia prima insegnante. Restavo seduta per ore a guardarla già all’età di anni. Poi un giorno le dissi che avrei voluto ballare. Mi rispose che avrei dovuto prima studiare e fare la sbarra. Ha capito subito che la danza sarebbe stata la sua strada? Avevo sempre voglia di ballare. Ho messo le punte a otto anni ed è atipico, perché solitamente le scarpe con le punte si mettono a o anni. Chiedevo di fare e provare sempre cose nuove.
C’è un incontro che le ha cambiato la vita?
Fino a anni sono rimasta nella mia prima scuola. Un giorno venne a Palermo per un’audizione Roland Petit, coreografo e danzatore francese, e mi scelse per interpretare Aurora bambina in La bella addormentata. Mi ritrovai in tournée con la sua compagnia, il Balletto di Marsiglia, e girai tutti i teatri di Italia e di Francia. E’ in quell’occasione che varcai per la prima volta la soglia de l’Opéra di Parigi.
E ha intuito che quel teatro avrebbe rappresentato il suo futuro
Ho scoperto subito che in Francia quando si parla della danza si parla solo de l’Opéra di Parigi. In quell’occasione tutti mi dissero che sarebbe stato impossibile entrare in quella scuola per una ballerina straniera.
E’ stata una sfda?
A clear penetrating gaze. The silhouette of a feline: light, harmonic, but underneath hides the power and the strength that only very few have. It is easy to be dazed watching Eleonora Abbagnato on stage. It is easy to understand how she has become so famous even amongst those who are not ballet experts but the real magic appears when you meet her. One is almost embarrassed by her beauty. The agility of her body allows her to move and acquire unnatural positions and she constantly puts it under strain. It is almost as if she is in a cage, she can’t keep still even for a second. In Carpi we meet her every year in June and she reveals to us that she would never miss the celebrations of her dear friends, the twins Giuseppe and Ferruccio De Lorenzo whose birthday falls at this exact time.
When did your passion for dancing begin?
It began when I was four in a small private school in Palermo, near my mother’s clothing store. I wanted to spend all my time there with Marisa Benassi, my frst teacher. I sat watching her for hours from when I was three years old. Then one day I told her that I wanted to dance. She told me that I would have to study frst and exercise at the ballet bar.
Did you immediately understand that dancing was your career?
I have always wanted to dance. I frst started wearing point shoes when I was eight years old and that was very unusual because you usually start wearing these shoes when you are or . I always wanted and asked to try new things.
Is there anyone that you have met that has changed your life?
I remained in my frst ballet school until I was . Then one day a French choreographer and dancer Roland Petit, came to Palermo for an audition, and he chose me for the role of Aurora as a child in “Sleeping beauty”. I found myself on tour with his company, the Marsiglia Ballet company, and I toured all the theatres in Italy and France. It was on that occasion that I crossed the threshold of the Operà of Paris.
And you understood that was the theatre that would represent your future
I immediately found out that in France when you spoke about dancing you only spoke about the Opèra of Paris. On that occasion everyone told

Mi sono preparata molto. Sono andata a studiare per un anno a Cannes e per sei mesi a Montecarlo. Due anni più tardi dopo un’audizione privata con Claude Bessy mi hanno ammesso. E’ stata una gioia immensa. Ho passato i successivi quattro anni presso la scuola de l’Opéra e mi sono diplomata a 8 anni.
Quando ha capito che quella sarebbe stata la sua strada e che oltre la passione c’era anche il talento che le avrebbe consentito di avere successo?
Da quando insegno ho capito che passione e talento devono convivere per creare un artista e che su cento bambine una sola avrà successo. Quando ero piccola non avevo altri interessi al di fuori del ballo, non ho mai giocato con una bambola o visto un cartone animato. Avevo solo voglia di ballare e ho avuto la conferma che avevo visto giusto quando ho iniziato a conoscere i grandi maestri e a relazionarmi con loro.
Ha un sogno da realizzare?
Un mio grande sogno riguarda il progetto di una futura compagnia di balletto a Bari. In quella città c’è una grande passione per la danza e l’ho notato quando ho debuttato con Giselle al Teatro Petruzzelli con la compagnia del Balletto dell’Opera di Riga. Avrei voglia di portare lì la grande danza. A Bari però non c’è la compagnia ed è molto complicato perché si spende molto. Oggi è consulente artistico del Petruzzelli. Sta lavorando a qualcosa che interessa questo grande Teatro?
E’ in programma un grandissimo stage con gli insegnanti dell’Opéra di Parigi. E’ un progetto cui tengo molto perché questo grande teatro italiano merita tutte le attenzioni possibili. Dal 6 giugno luglio i maestri Claude Bessy, Michele Politi e Laurent Novis, sotto la mia direzione artistica, terranno 8 giorni di lezioni nel capoluogo pugliese. Subito dopo ci sarà una serata contemporanea in cui Davide Bombana, il coreografo che ha creato l’assolo del video di Vasco, farà per me una creazione che s’intitola Il pomeriggio di un Fauno con un ballerino de l’Opéra.
L’abbiamo vista anche al cinema con Il 7 e l’8. Nel suo futuro c’è anche la recitazione?
Magari! Mi sono divertita moltissimo e vorrei avere altre possibilità in questo campo. Però lavorare con Ficarra e Picone mi ha portato via un mese e mezzo e non sempre posso permettermi di sottrarre alla danza tutto questo tempo.

I did a lot of preparation. I studied in Cannes for a year and in Montecarlo for six months. I was admitted to the school two years later after a private audition with Claude Bessy. It was a great joy to me. I spent the following four years at the School of the Opèra and I graduated when I was 8 years old.
When did you understand that this was your career and that besides passion you also had talent that would allow you to be successful?
Ever since I started teaching I understood that passion and talent must coexist to create a true artist and that amongst children only one will be successful. When I was little I was only interested in dancing, I never played with any dolls or ever watched any cartoons. I only wanted to dance and I got confrmation that I was on the right track when I started to meet the great teachers and started to relate to them.
Do you have a dream?
My biggest dream is the project that I have for a future ballet company in Bari. In that city there is a real passion for ballet and I noticed it when I debuted with Giselle at the Petruzzelli Theatre with the Opera of Riga ballet company.
I would love to bring great ballet there. Bari however doesn’t have a ballet company and it is very complicated because it is very expensive.
Today you are Petruzzelli’s artistic adviser. Are you working on something that involves this great Theatre?
We are organizing an important stage with the teachers of the Opèra of Paris. It is a project that is very dear to me because this great Italian theatre deserves to get all the attention possible. From the 6th of June to the rd of July the teachers Claude Bess, Michele Politi and Laurent Novis, under my artistic direction, will hold 8 days of lessions in the Pugliese capital city. Straight after there will be a contemporary evening in which Davide Bombana, the choreographer that created the solo in Vasco’s video, will create a dance for me called The afternoon of a Faun with a dancer of the Opèra.
We have also seen you in the flm the 7 e 8. Is there room for acting in your future?
I wish! I had so much fun I would love to have other possibilities in this area. But working with Ficarra and Picone took up one month and a half of my time and I can’t always afford to take this much time off from dancing.

Dietro le grandi fnestre dell’Hotel La Palma a Capodanno c’è un “parterre reale”, li vedi, di superstelle del cinema e della musica globale. Sono tutti lì, si danno appuntamento ogni anno, al Capri, Hollywood - International Film Festival prodotto da Pascal Vicedomini con l’Istituto Capri nel mondo e l’Ept di Napoli in collaborazione con BNL, Hogan E Acqua Fiuggi. Arrivano, dopo ore di aereo, dopo un aliscafo che a volte sembraun ottovolante, quando il mare è grosso. O, come dicono qui, “salato”. Ma subito vengono coinvolti dall’atmosfera. E si ritrovano sul palco, così come sono, in maglietta, jeans e barba lunga a fare parte della festa. Abbiamo sentito Forest Whitaker improvvisare un blues, Terry Gilliam ballare da solo, come un grizzly gentile e leggero e puoi ritrovarti a dare il bacio di buon anno a Lindsay Lohan, e tutto sembra normale. Negli anni, ne sono passati tanti di divi. Sicuramente a Hollywood si sono passati la parola: “Andiamo al Capri Hollywood Film festival, it’s cool…”. Quest’anno, la star più star era la “diva” per antonomasia dello showbiz globale: la cantante e attrice Mariah Carey, coprotagonista di Precious, uno dei flm più particolari dell’anno pluripremiato la notte degli Oscar. La popstar che ha venduto più dischi dei Beatles, bellezza morbida in cui si mescolano tratti latini e irlandesi, ha parlato del suo flm girato a Harlem, dove recita il ruolo di un’assistente sociale, struccata, dimessa, smagrita e spettinata. You can see them there at New Year, on the large parterre behind the big picture windows of the hotel La Palma. Italian and American movie stars, they’re all there, at the annual appointment with the Capri, Hollywood international flm festival. They arrive after gruelling long fights, followed by a hydrofoil at times more like a roller coaster, when there’s a swell, or as they say here, when the sea is “tangy”. They arrive pale as ghosts, but are immediately swept up in the atmosphere and end up on the stage, just as they are, in t-shirts and jeans and designer stubble, the life and soul of the party.
We heard Whitaker improvising a blues and saw Terry Gilliam dancing alone, like a deft and courteous grizzly bear; you can end up giving a New Year’s kiss to Lindsay Lohan and it’s just par for the course. A host of celebrities have dropped in over the years; clearly in Hollywood, the word goes round: “Let’s drop in to the Capri festival, it’s cool…”.
This year the out-and-out celebrity was Mariah Carey, co-star of Precious, one of the most striking flms of the year. The pop star who has sold more records than The Beatles, faunting a gentle beauty where Latin and Irish traits are blended, talked about the flm shot in Harlem where she plays the part of a social worker, shabby, drawn, dishevelled and no make-up. E’ il festival Los Angeles, Italia. che porta al Chinese Theatre attori, registi, musicisti: il meglio del made in Italy dello spettacolo. E’ l’istituto Capri nel mondo a promuovere il festival. E tutto nasce dall’impegno, dall’infaticabile entusiasmo di Pascal Vicedomini. Anche lì, fra il ristorante Trastevere e le sale del Chinese Theatre, nascono incontri, amicizie, progetti. Paul Haggis va a cena con Pupi Avati, il musicista Andrea Griminelli si fa applaudire da Rosario Dawson. Quest’anno, il 8 febbraio, sono stati Quentin Tarantino e Forest Whitaker a inaugurare la manifestazione, giunta al quinto anno di vita. Tra gli ospiti italiani anche un regista che Tarantino chiama “maestro”, e al quale si è ispirato per dirigere il suo ultimo flm Inglorious Basterds, si tratta di Enzo G. Castellari con il suo flm Quel maledetto treno blindato Tra le star intervenute quest’anno, un nome su tutti: Andrea Bocelli. Il tenore toscano, martedì marzo, ha ricevuto la stella sul Walk of Fame, e quello è stato un momento di massima emozione. Bocelli è il settimo italiano, nell’arco del tempo, a entrare nella leggenda. Prima di lui Arturo Toscanini, Anna Magnani, Rodolfo Valentino, Enrico Caruso, Sofa Loren e Bernardo Bertolucci. It is the Capri nel mondo (Capri in the world) institute that promotes the festival. Everything comes from the efforts and untiring enthusiasm of Pascal Vicedomini. A meeting point between the Trastevere restaurant and the Chinese Theatre, where meetings and friends are made and projects are planned. Paul Haggis goes to dinner with Pupi Avati, the musician Andrea Griminelli is applauded by Rosario Dawson. This year, on the 8th February, Quentin Tarantino and Forest Whitaker inaugurated the ffth edition of the event. Maria Grazia Cucinotta con l’anteprima mondiale del flm che ha prodotto e interpretato, L’imbroglio nel lenzuolo di Alfonso Arau, l’attore Franco Nero che ha presentato un docu-flm realizzato tra le macerie de L’Aquila straziata dal terremoto, il regista Luca Guadagnino. Infne, alcuni tecnici a cinque stelle. I make-up artist de Il Divo Aldo Signoretti e Vittorio Sodano, il direttore della fotografa di Avatar Mario Fiore, i compositori italoamericani Marco Beltrami e Michael Giacchino, lo sceneggiatore Alessandro Camon, e lo sceneggiatore e regista anglo-italiano Armando Iannucci. The First Lady’s private and bourgeois frst summer in Capri
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis: una donna che ha stregato l’opinione pubblica americana e in seguito il mondo intero per oltre cinque decenni, dal suo esordio di “debuttante dell’anno” nel 947, fno alla sua morte, nel 994. Il rapporto tra la Jackie O, vera epitome femminile dello stile americano upper class, un misto di grazia naturale, glamour, rigore, una forma di eleganza stilizzata e araldica, l’isola di Capri e la Costiera Amalftana, risale ai primi anni ’6 . Nel 96 infatti Jacqueline Kennedy, trascorre l’intero mese d’agosto in Italia, fnalmente lontana dagli impegni uffciali e dalla Casa Bianca, a Villa Episcopio a Ravello, in compagnia della sorella Lee Radziwill e del principe Stanislaus, Stas, suo marito. Jackie aveva con sé la piccola Caroline. Villa Episcopio, così chiamata per esser stata residenza vescovile nel XIV secolo, già proprietà del duca di Sangro che vi aveva ospitato Vittorio Emanuele III e la regina Elena nel 945 durante il governo di Salerno, fu acquistata poi da Alfredo Ajello, patron dell’Hotel Cappuccini di Amalf. Alta sul mare, spalancata su quella distesa blu increspata dalle onde, laddove si incrociano i due golf di Napoli e Salerno, Villa Episcopio era un incredibile belvedere che permetteva allo sguardo di spingersi fno a Capo Palinuro e in Calabria, mentre dall’altra parte l’orizzonte era dominato dai Faraglioni di Capri. La vacanza, che come ebbe a dichiarare più volte la stessa Jackie fu la più bella della sua vita, trascorse con un ritmo semplice, borghese e squisitamente privato. La First Lady scendeva ogni mattina intorno alle ad Amalf per fare il bagno. Usava la giardinetta scoperta foderata di vimini, con una tenda che la riparava dal sole, messale a disposizione dall’avvocato Agnelli e condotta da un autista. I negozianti in paese la chiamavano confdenzialmente “Jaccheli”. Il marinaio Orsi talvolta portava Jacqueline e Lee a Conca dei Marini, a casa dell’avvocato Sandro D’Urso, amico di famiglia, grande conoscitore delle grotte marine della zona e esperto pescatore di ricci. I D’Urso hanno mantenuto integra la memoria di quell’amicizia. Il Guestbook di famiglia è pieno di

The relationship between Jackie O, a true epitome of American upper class that can be defned as natural charm, glamour, self-discipline and elegance, and the Isle of Capri and the Amalf Coast starts at the beginning of the sixties. Jacqueline Kennedy, in 96 , spent in Italy the month of August at Villa Episcopio in Ravello, with her sister Lee Radziwill and brother-in-law Prince Stanislaus, known as Stas. Jackie had brought along her daughter Caroline. Villa Episcopio had been a bishop’s residence in the 4th century. It was owned, later on, by the Duke of Sangro who had, as guests, King Vittorio Emanuele III and Queen Elena in 945 during the Salerno government and it was fnally bought by Alfredo Ajello, the owner of the Cappuccini Hotel in Amalf. Villa Episcopio, perched on the sea and wide open on the endless blue of its waves between the Gulf of Naples and Salerno’s, was an incredibly beautiful belvedere. It allowed a view of Capo Palinuro and Calabria on one side and Capri’s Faraglioni on the other. These holidays were, in Jackie’s own words, the best of her life in their simplicity and exquisite privacy. The First Lady used to descend to Amalf every morning to swim. She used a small Italian open-roof station wagon called Giardinetta, wicker-lined, with a sunshade, driven by a chauffeur and lent by “Avvocato” Agnelli. The town’s shopkeepers called her, affectionately, “Jaccheli”. Sometimes, the sailor Orsi took Jacqueline and Lee to Conca dei Marini where Sandro D’Urso lived, a lawyer and family friend, great expert on the local sea caves and enthusiast fsherman of sea urchins. The D’Ursos still retain a fond and loyal memory of such friendship. The family’s guestbook is full of loving thoughts from Jackie who also kept sending greetings from the Christina yacht at the time of her marriage to Onassis. Gianni Agnelli and his wife, Donna Marella, used also to come to the Amalf Coast, on that special August

pensieri affettuosi, di saluti da parte di Jackie, spesso inviati dallo yacht Christina durante gli anni della sua unione con Onassis. Spesso, in quell’agosto ’6 , arrivava in Costiera la barca di Gianni Agnelli, l’Agneta e con lui donna Marella, si organizzavano brevi gite a Positano, Punta Campanella e soprattutto a Capri. Ne facevano parte anche Benno e Nicole Graziani, i DouglasHome, l’ex modella Sandra Paul, Harry Hambleden. A Capri Jackie in quell’anno ci approda per incontrare Irene Galitzine, fashion designer creatrice del celebre pijama palazzo divenuto in breve l’ uniforme da sera delle signore del jet set internazionale. La principessa Irene, di antica stirpe russa, realizzò in seguito molti abiti per la First Lady americana. Irene e suo marito Silvio Medici, avevano affttato una villa a Capri, che fu teatro di un incontro top secret mediato da Gianni Agnelli, dopo uno sbarco avventuroso al riparo dagli assalti della stampa. Salita dal mare praticamente in deshabillé, Jacqueline, totalmente rilassata, chiese una vodka prima di andare in un bagno per indossare un pijama palazzo in seta verde thailandese. Il dinner fu accompagnato da tre cantanti-chitarristi locali. Quindi, sfdando i paparazzi assiepati in Piazzetta, Jackie espresse la volontà di fare un giro per le vie di Capri. La scortava Mario D’Urso, amico da una vita, col quale abitualmente si ritrovava d’estate in Italia e in inverno a New York. Ci fu un passaggio d’obbligo al Quisisana, l’acquisto canonico di un paio di sandali, il twist, il cha-cha-cha al Number One e infne un ritorno sotto la luna verso Amalf, allietato dalle canzoni di Scarola, noto interprete canoro locale. Il 9 agosto, poco prima di rientrare negli USA, ecco nuovamente Jacqueline sull’isola per fare shopping: dodici cravatte di seta per Jack, così gli intimi chiamavano John Fitzgerald Kennedy, due braccialetti e un paio di pantaloni per sé. Il giorno seguente Irene Galitzine e Silvio Medici furono invitati per il party d’addio a Villa Episcopio. La vacanza fu interrotta dallo stesso presidente Kennedy, forse preoccupato dalle conseguenze dell’eccessiva copertura stampa sulla vita dorata della consorte nella vecchia decadente Europa, con un laconico e perentorio telegramma inviato a Ravello: “More Caroline, less Agnelli”. L’amore di Jacqueline per questi luoghi non sarebbe mai fnito. Di Capri, ebbe a dire che era l’isola della seduzione. Vi fece ritorno il 4 agosto 97 , durante una crociera sul Christina, con la sorella Lee e i nipoti Tina e Anthony Radziwill, in chignon, T-shirt e grandi occhiali neri, gonna a portafoglio e quel portamento perfetto, regale, appreso da adolescente alla scuola di Miss Porter a Farmington, nel Connecticut. Nel 97 fu ritratta da Ron Galella e fotografata da un paparazzo, Settimio Garritano, che sull’isola la seguiva ossessivamente, con i fgli Caroline e John Jr., seduta in Piazzetta - accanto ad Aristotiles Onassis e a David Niven - , sulla seggiovia di Anacapri. D’obbligo lo shopping nelle gioiellerie e nelle boutique per acquistare Capri pants e i famosi sandali. Ricordava Amedeo Canfora che dovette aprire di notte la propria bottega per Jackie. E’ ovvio che Jackie contribuì enormemente alla diffusione del Capri look.

Princess Irene, a descendant of an ancient Russian family, created many beautiful gowns for the American frst lady. Irene and her husband, Silvio Medici, had rented a villa in Capri and it was right here that, with the help of Gianni Agnelli, a top-secret meeting took place. The point was to avoid the press which was taking by storm the place and the famous guest. Jacqueline appeared from the sea, scantily dressed and totally at ease. She asked for a glass of vodka and changed right away into a pyjama suit made of green Thai silk. The dinner that followed included three local guitarists and singers. Later, defying the danger of the paparazzi crowding the famous Piazzetta, Jackie took a stroll in Capri with her lifelong friend Mario D’Urso whom she used to meet regularly in Italy during summer and in New York in winter. She made an unavoidable stop at the Quisisana where she bought a pair of sandals, she danced the twist and cha-cha-cha at the Number One and then a moonlit return to Amalf in the company of Scarola, a well-known local singer, and his songs. On August 9th, shortly before going back to the USA, Jackie went back to the island on a shopping spree. She bought twelve silk ties for Jack (that was the name given to John Fitzgerald Kennedy by his closest friends), two bracelets and a pair of pants for herself. On the following day, Irene Galitzine and Silvio Medici were invited to Villa Episcopio for a farewell party. Jackie’s Italian stay had been cut short by President Kennedy worried about his wife’s golden vacation in decadent Europe and press gossiping. He sent her a laconic and irrefutable telegram saying “More Caroline, less Agnelli”. However, Jacqueline never stopped loving her Italian haven. She used to say that Capri was the island of seductiveness “par excellence”. She went back to Capri on August 4th, 97 during a cruise on the Christina with her sister Lee and niece and nephew Tina and Anthony Rodziwill. She was, as usual, perfect and regal with her hair gathered in a chignon, her large dark sunglasses and a simple wrapover skirt; her impeccable bearing the result of Miss Porter’s exclusive school in Farmington, Connecticut, that she attended as a teenager. In 97 , she was portrayed by Ron Galella and her photos taken by a paparazzo, Settimio Garritano, who followed her obsessively on the island, with her children Caroline and John Jr., Aristotele Onassis and David Niven, sitting in the Piazzetta and on the chair-lift to Anacapri. A must-stop for Jackie was the jeweler’s shop or the boutiques where she could buy Capri pants and sandals. Amedeo Canfora still remembers when he had to open his boutique for Jackie during the night. The world famous “Capri look” owes its fame and spread, and rightly so, to Jacqueline’s patronage.

“Oggi le mode non durano nulla c’è una rincorsa terribile alla ricerca di qualcosa di nuovo. Tutti vogliono la novità, sia nell’oggetto industriale sia nell’opera d’arte. Così se un tempo gli stili duravano cinquanta anni o addirittura un secolo, oggi durano un soffo”. Parola di Gillo Dorfes, pittore, scultore, scrittore e soprattutto esteta. Uno degli ultimi. O forse uno dei nuovi: uomini lontani dai dandy dei romanzi ottocenteschi, che fanno del savoir vivre una questione più complessa della eccentricità e della eleganza, che non rinnegano il loro tempo ma cercano la bellezza anche nei suoi sinonimi contemporanei, come l’armonia, l’etica, la difesa del pianeta.
Questa bellezza ci salverà? Non è facile a dirsi. E’ certo però che implica una costruzione intellettuale, e come tale non è scontata. Neanche nei suoi aspetti più frivoli. L’abito è uno di questi.
Non esiste una declinazione univoca dell’eleganza: ognuno ha un suo stile personale e il gusto è qualcosa che può prescindere dalla cultura e dalle valutazioni sociologiche. Ci sono però dei parametri certi, veri e propri punti di riferimento per decidere da quale parte della barricata si sta. Il vestito su misura è uno di questi. Savile Row e Napoli le sue coordinate.
Già all’inizio del ‘9 i sarti napoletani erano custodi di uno stile vero e proprio: la spalla napoletana, la cravatta a sette pieghe, la giacca a mappina o il tre bottoni strappato a due sono diventati sinonimi di uno stile impeccabile in tutto il mondo. Oggi un pugno di nomi tramanda questa tradizione, anche ben oltre i confni italiani, adeguando mode e modi al passo dei tempi.
Siamo andati a trovarli, quasi a scovarli nel centro di Napoli e nei quartieri satellite, famosi per la loro tradizione sartoriale: viale dei Mille, ma anche Arzano, Secondigliano, Casalnuovo, in un Gran Tour di tessuti esclusivi e asole fatte a mano, di forbici e ditali. Tra antico e moderno. Tra Napoli e il resto del mondo.
Gianni Marigliano. Lo showroom e la sartoria hanno lo stesso indirizzo, viale dei Mille. Uno spazio, inaugurato lo scorso ottobre, a due velocità: l’eleganza dello showroom diventa lusso sobrio nella parte della sartoria, senza soluzione di continuità. E se da una parte domina il legno scuro e le superfci nere degli scaffali e dei tavoli da esposizione, nella sartoria è il bianco a far da padrone, punteggiato dalle fantasie dei tessuti e dalle colorate rocche di flo. Qui è tutto su misura ed esclusivo: i capospalla leggeri e impermiabili, i bermuda seersuker, le polo bicolore, i 5 bottoni dall’aspetto vintage e le scarpe in camoscio. Se questi sono i best di stagione, non mancano gli abiti più tradizionali, naturalmente bespoke per l’esclusivo parterre di clienti. Rubinacci. Le vetrine del negozio di Napoli si aprono sempre su viale dei Mille, al numero 4. Tre scalini per entrare in un universo di sete colorate, grandi borse in morbida pelle,

“Nowadays trends don’t last, there is a constant search for something new. Everyone wants novelty, both in the industrial object and in the piece of art. And so if once upon a time styles used to last ffty years or even a century, now they last for just a puff of time”. Words of Gillo Dorfes, painter, sculptor, writer and mainly aesthete. One of the last. Or maybe one of the new: men that are far away from the dandies of the nineteenth century novels, who make savoir vivre a more complex matter than eccentricity and elegance, who don’t disown their time but look for beauty in its contemporary synonymous, such as harmony, ethic and defence of the planet. Will this beauty save us? It’s not easy to say. Though it is certain that it involves an intellectual construction, and as such it is not to be taken for granted. Not even in it’s most frivolous aspects. Garments are one of these. There is not an unambiguous declination of elegance: everyone has its personal style and taste is something that can be irrespective of culture and sociological evaluations. There are however some certain parameters, reference points in order to decide on which side of the barricade one is. The made to measure garment is one of these. Savile Row and Naples its coordinates. Already at the beginning of the th century Neapolitan tailors were keepers of a full blown style: the Neapolitan shoulder, the tie folded seven times, the ‘mappina’ jacket or the three ripped buttons to two, have become synonymous of impeccable style all over the world. Today only a handful of names will be able to hand down this tradition, also well over the Italian border, adapting ways and fashions to time. We went to fnd them, almost unearthing them in the centre of Naples and in the suburbs, famous for their tailoring tradition: viale dei Mille but also Arzano, Secondigliano, Casalnuovo, in a Gran Tour of exclusive fabrics, handmade button holes, scissors and thimbles. Between antique and modern. Between Naples and the rest of the world.
Gianni Marigliano. The showroom and the tailor shop have the same address, viale dei Mille. A space that was inaugurated last October, with two speeds: the elegance of the showroom becomes sober luxury in the tailors area, without a solution of continuity. And if on one side dark wood dominates with the black surfaces of the shelves and display tables, in the tailors area it is all white, coloured by the prints of the fabrics and the coloured yarns.
Here everything is made to measure and exclusive: the light coats and raincoats, the seersucker Bermuda, the bi-colour polo’s, the 5 buttons with a vintage aspect and the suede shoes.
If these are the best of the season, traditional suits are never missing, naturally bespoke for the exclusive parterre of clients. Rubinacci. The window of the Neapolitan shop faces onto viale dei Mille, at number 4. Three steps to enter a universe of coloured silks, big soft leather bags, bi-colour shoes and elegantly ethnic scarves. A deluxe bazaar that is the soft

Camici bianchi e precisione certosina per un team di sarti, in disposizione rigorosamente gerarchica, che lavorano circa giorni e mezzo su ogni abito . Da qui le creazioni Rubinacci arrivano in tutto il mondo: Tokyo, New York, Londra, Milano e Roma, venduti negli esclusivi negozi del brand. Il polso della situazione è in mano alla famiglia: Mariano, discendente del fondatore Gennaro, la moglie e i suoi 4 fgli. Sulla porta, come su bottoni e etichette troneggia un piccolo e bellissimo stemma, simbolo di Rubinacci nel mondo. Viene da London House, nome dato da Gennaro Rubinacci al suo primo negozio.
Sartoria partenopea. Atelier nato nel 99 è l’esempio di come la tradizione convive con l’evoluzione. In questo edifcio nel centro di Secodigliano, al quale si accede attraverso una piccola corte piena di palme, lavorano circa 8 sarti senza l’ausilio di macchinari, ma solo con ago e flo. Gli abiti, mantenuti alla temperatura ottimale di ° per conservare i tessuti pregiati con cui sono confezionati, partono da qui con destinazione resto del mondo. Nei negozi autorizzati, gli abiti sartoriali vengono modifcati in base alle esigenze del cliente fnale e seguendo criteri bespoke della casa madre. Adesso in azienda stanno preparando la p/e , ispirata al mare del cilento e al verde intenso della vegetazione in estate.

From here the Rubinacci creations reach all over the world: New York, London, Milan and Rome, sold in the exclusive shops of the brand. The authority of the situation is in the hands of the family: Mariano, heir of the founder Gennaro, his wife and his 4 children. On the door, just like on the buttons and on the labels there is a small and beautiful stem, symbol of Rubinacci in the world. It comes from London House, name given by Gennaro Rubinacci to his frst shop.
Sartoria partenopea. Atelier, set up in 99 , is the example of how tradition cohabits with evolution.
In this building in the centre of Secondigliano, one enters through a small court yard full of palms, about 8 tailors work here without the use of machines but only needle and thread. The suits, always maintained at the ideal temperature of ° in order to preserve the precious fabric which they are made out of, reach, from here, destinations all over the world.
In the authorised shops, the tailored suits are modifed on the basis of the needs of the client, always following the bespoke criteria of the headquarters.
Now, in the company, they are preparing the s/s , that has taken inspiration from the sea of ‘cilento’ and from the intense green of the vegetation in the summer.

Isaia L’azienda di Casalnuovo è stata fondata nel 9 . All’inizio era solo un piccolo negozio di tessuti, al quale il fondatore Enrico decise di annettere un laboratorio. Da allora la crescita è stata rapida e costante. Oggi Isaia è un’ azienda importante, che viaggia su numeri altrettanto importanti. Ma lo stile è rimasto quello degli esordi, fatto di asole e bottoni cuciti a mano, ribattiture con ago e flo e dettagli studiati capo per capo. La sartoria si inserisce quindi in un processo semi-industriale, in cui il ruolo di primo piano dei sarti non è mai stato messo in discussione. Connubio azzeccato: anche Rudolph Murdoch si veste Isaia. Kiton. “L’eleganza non si può spiegare, come la bellezza, si può solo mostrare” La frase è di Ciro Paone, fondatore della maison Kiton. Nato in mezzo ai tessuti, la sua famiglia si occupava del commercio, nel 956 Ciro inizia a produrre capi bespoke in un piccolo laboratorio. Il nome del marchio, Kiton da chitone, la tunica cerimoniale che usavano gli antichi greci per pregare sull’Olimpo, nasce però solo nel 968, contemporaneamente all’espansione dell’azienda.
Oggi Kiton produce 5 capi al giorno nel rispetto della sartorialità e della cura dei dettagli del su misura.
La storia recente ha capitoli importanti e racconta la rapida ascesa di un brand che nel 995, dopo aver allargato la produzione agli accessori e alla profumeria, si presenta anche sul mercato della donna con collezioni ad alto contenuto sartoriale.
Isaia. Company in Casalnuovo founded in 9 . It was only a small fabric shop at the beginning, to which the founder, Enrico, decided to add a workshop. Since then the growth has been rapid and constant. Isaia today is an important company, that deals with numbers of the same importance. The style has remained just like at the beginning, made with the button holes and buttons all sewn by hand, the riveting and fell with needle and thread and details studied piece by piece. This tailor shop is thus inserted in a semi-industrial process, in which the important role important of the tailors has never been put into any doubt.

Born in the middle of fabrics, his family dealt with trading, in 956 Ciro started making bespoke garments in a small workshop. The name of the brand, Kiton from ‘chitone’, the ceremonial tunic that the Greeks used to use in order to pray on Olympus, only came about though in 968, contemporarily with the expansion of the company. Today Kiton produces 5 garments a day respecting tailoring and attentiveness to made to measure detail. Its recent history has some important chapters and recounts the fast growth of a brand that in 995, after having widened the production to accessories and perfumery, also presented itself on the women’s market with highly tailored collections.

Ambiziosa e strategica, romantica e sognatrice. Il Cavaliere del Lavoro Grazia Bottiglieri Rizzo è presidente e amministratore delegato della Rizzo Bottiglieri De Carlini Armatori, presidente dell’Hotel La Palma e consigliere d’amministrazione della Sangemini. La incontriamo a Torre del Greco, nella storica villa settecentesca Olivella, oggi sede operativa della società armatoriale, ma un tempo scelta da Roberto Rossellini per girare Viaggio in Italia con l’indimenticata Ingrid Bergman.
Sotto la sua guida il Gruppo ha conosciuto un momento di grande espansione, possiede una delle più importanti fotte di bulkcarrier e petroliere europee: attualmente sono in costruzione navi di ultima generazione.
Come e quando è iniziata l’avventura nel settore delle grandi navi?
La nostra è un’azienda familiare da sei generazioni, fn dal 85 , ed è una delle più antiche società armatoriali europee, ma è del 99 la svolta. Quando insieme a mia sorella Orsola Bottiglieri De Carlini, abbiamo deciso di riportare in Italia l’azienda, all’epoca basata in Grecia. Da qui è nata la Rizzo-Bottiglieri-De Carlini Armatori. L’energia che ho sempre cercato di trasmettere con il mio entusiasmo oggi è stata raccolta da mio fglio Giuseppe Mauro Rizzo, che come amministratore delegato e direttore generale, ha dato un forte impulso all’innovazione e allo sviluppo della fotta.
Le sue sensazioni quando ha visto Capri per la prima volta.
E’ stato amore a prima vista: Capri è un’isola meravigliosa, che lascia senza fato per la bellezza della natura e per l’atmosfera magica che si respira in ogni suo angolo. La decisione di acquistare casa al Belvedere di Tuoro a fne anni ‘7 , è stato il primo passo per poter condividere l’incanto di questa isola magica.
Cosa vi ha spinto ad acquistare l’Hotel La Palma?
L’amore per l’isola e i tanti viaggi in Cina e in Giappone, dove sono in
costruzione le nostre navi e dove è grande l’ammirazione per l’Italia e per il suo lifestyle, ci hanno spinto a diversifcare nel settore turisticoalberghiero, e ad acquisire l’Hotel La Palma, che ci ha conquistato per la sua storia e per la splendida posizione strategica, a ridosso della Piazzetta. E’ un investimento che abbiamo affrontato guidati dal desiderio di far tornare quest’isola a essere un crocevia di scambio culturale, un luogo dove imprenditori, uomini di cultura e artisti possano rigenerarsi ed esprimere la propria vivacità intellettuale. Cosa le piace e cosa cambierebbe nella Capri di oggi?
La natura, l’atmosfera, l’accoglienza: amo tutto di Capri. Il mio desiderio è vedere quest’isola tornare a essere un centro di creatività e d’impollinazione culturale di livello internazionale. Come imprenditori, ci piacerebbe che Capri intraprendesse un percorso innovativo simile a quello di Ravello, realizzando infrastrutture moderne degne della sua migliore storia, a cominciare da un auditorium.
Quali sono stati i suoi impegni per legare ancor più Capri alla cultura?
Abbiamo fatto sì che l’Hotel La Palma diventasse centro catalizzatore di eventi e di personalità, una sorta di agorà culturale. L’emozione più intensa è legata all’esibizione dell’étoile internazionale Roberto Bolle alla Certosa di Capri nel 8, da noi organizzata in quanto testimonial di Acqua Fiuggi, con la partecipazione di Alessandra Ferri e di Fabrizio Ferri, regista dello spot televisivo da me ideato. L’estate scorsa abbiamo ospitato il nuovo genio del jazz mondiale Eric Lewis che si è esibito davanti ad un pubblico di star del cinema, come Terrence Howard, il regista premio Oscar Steven Zaillian e Nastassja Kinski. Ogni Capodanno, per una settimana, La Palma diventa il cuore della manifestazione cinematografca Capri Hollywood, mentre in estate è movimentato da eventi legati alle avanguardie della cultura, dell’arte, della fotografa.

Grazia Bottiglieri Rizzo ‘Cavaliere del Lavoro’ is the president and managing director of Rizzo Bottiglieri De Carlini Armatori S.p.A., president of the Hotel La Palma S.p.A. in Capri and board member of Sangemini S.p.A. We meet her at Torre del Greco, in the historic eighteenth century villa Olivella, today the head offce of the ship-owning company that once upon a time was the setting chosen by Roberto Rossellini for the shooting of Journey to Italy with the unforgettable Ingrid Bergman. Under her guidance the Group met a moment of great expansion, they own one of the most important bulk carrier and oil tanker feets in Europe: at the moment there are last generation ships under construction.
How and when did your family’s venture into the sector of big commercial ships start?
Ours is a family owned company passed on through six generations, but the turning point happened in 99 . When, together with my sister Orsola Bottiglieri De Carlini, we decided to bring the company, at the time based in Greece, back to Italy. Here the Rizzo-Bottiglieri-De Carlini Armatori SpA.The energy that I have always tried to transmit with my enthusiasm is now being carried on by Giuseppe Mauro Rizzo, my son, who as managing director and general manager, has given a strong impulse of innovation and development to the feet”. What did you feel when you saw Capri for the frst time?
It was love at frst sight: Capri is a marvellous Island the beauty of nature and the magic atmosphere that one breathes at every corner leaves you breathless. The decision to buy a house at Belvedere di Tuoro in the late 7 s, was the frst step towards being able to share in the enchantment of this magic island. What encouraged you to buy the Hotel La Palma?
Love for this Island and the many trips to China and Japan where our ships are built, and where there is great admiration for Italy and its lifestyle, pushed us towards this diversifcation in the hoteliertouristic sector and therefore into buying Hotel La Palma, which won us over with its history and its splendid strategic setting, close to the Piazzetta.It is an investment that we have taken on guided by the desire to return this island back into a centre of cultural exchange again and a place where managers, men of culture and artists can regenerate and express their intellectual vivacity. What do you like and what would you change in today’s Capri?
The nature, the atmosphere, the welcoming: I love everything about Capri. My desire is to see the island return to being a centre of creativity and pollination of international culture. As businessmen, we would like Capri to take an innovative road, like Ravello, creating modern infrastructures worthy of its best history, starting with an auditorium. Has much effort been put into making Capri closer to culture?
We have put lots of effort into making the Hotel La Palma a catalyst centre of events and of status, a sort of cultural agora.The most intense emotion is linked to the show of the international étoile Roberto Bolle at Certosa di Capri in 8, that we organized as a testimonial to Acqua Fiuggi, with the participation of Alessandra Ferri and Fabrizio Ferri, flm directors of the t.v. spot that I created. Last summer we welcomed the new world wide Jazz genius Eric Lewis, who fell in love with Capri, and played in front of a public of stars in cinema such as Terrence Howard, Oscar winning flm director Steven Zaillian and Nastassja Kinski. At the start of every New Year, for a week, Palma becomes the heart of the cinematic event Capri Hollywood, whilst in the summer it’s full of life with events linked to the cultural vanguards of art and photography.

Decisamente il sarà l’anno di Mimmo Jodice, uno dei più amati fotograf della scena internazionale, perchè celebra i suoi cinquant’anni di attività artistica. Nato a Napoli, nel rione Sanità nel , fn dagli anni ’ Jodice è stato al centro di quel dibattito culturale promosso dalle avanguardie che ha visto la defnitiva affermazione della fotografa quale arte con l’A maiuscola. Due grandi mostre retrospettive, che ripercorrono le varie fasi di uno straordinario itinerario creativo, sono state dedicate a Jodice rispettivamente dal Palazzo delle Esposizioni a Roma – rimarrà aperta fno all’ luglio prossimo - e a Parigi, nella prestigiosa sede della Maison Européenne de la Photographie, fno al giugno. Il rapporto di Mimmo Jodice, fgura di artista appartata, schiva e introspettiva, uno di quegli intellettuali insieme estremamente sofsticati e radicatamente popolari che solo Napoli riesce a generare, con l’isola di Capri, è intrinseco e peculiare. La Fondazione Capri ha voluto sancire questo legame con una rassegna fotografca sull’opera di Mimmo Jodice alla Certosa di San Giacomo, che verrà inaugurata il giugno. Circa fotografe che non riguardano soltanto il narrato caprese, ma che partono dall’interpretazione del mare e dell’infnito, risalgono alle radici del mito mediterraneo e alle visioni archeologiche vive e vibranti caratteristiche della poetica di Jodice. Mimmo lo si può incontrare di frequente per le vie di Capri, con accanto l’inseparabile moglie Angela, la sua ermeneuta, la sua autentica voce rispetto al mondo.
Una compagna insostituibile e fervida, come visibilmente commosso l’ha defnita lui stesso, durante la conferenza stampa che l’ aprile scorso ha preceduto il vernissage della vasta e mirabile antologica romana. Occhi azzurro mare penetranti, sorriso di flosofo ellenico, lunghi silenzi signifcanti, Jodice ha esercitato ed esercita una magia interpretativa, un magistero estetico che mai si è voluto fermare al mero dato oggettivo. Il suo è un approccio etico e fortemente sperimentale, che gli ha fatto esplorare tecniche e ambiti espressivi i più diversi. Una rappresentazione ordita, aiutata dal più geniale ed imprevedibile dei metteur en scène, il caso. L’ universo di Jodice è scandito da immagini rigorosamente, unicamente realizzate in bianco e nero, lungo mezzo secolo di storia e di impegno costante.“ In passato- racconta Mimmo Jodice - la mia presenza a Capri è stata molto discontinua, frammentata.
is defnitely the year of Mimmo Jodice, one of the world’s greatest and most popular photographers, who celebrates ffty years of his artistic career. Born in Naples, in the Sanità neighbourhood, in , Jodice has been taking part in the cultural process supported by avant-garde artists, which led to the public recognition for photography as a form of Art, since the sixties. Two big retrospective exhibitions, which go over the many stages of his extraordinary career, are devoted to Jodice at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome- till July th – and in Paris, at the prestigious Maison Européenne de la Photographie, till June nd. The relationship of Mimmo Jodice, a reserved and introspective artist, one of those highly sophisticated and yet extremely popular intellectuals that only Naples could give birth to, with the Isle of Capri is quite special. The Capri Foundation celebrates its bond with the artist through a photographic exhibit on Mimmo Jodice held at the Certosa di San Giacomo which will be inaugurated on June th A collection of about photos, not only of Capri but of his idea of the sea and the infnity, from the origins of the Mediterranean myth to the vivid archeological visions typical of Jodice’s works.
One can often see him walking through the streets of Capri, beside his wife Angela, his hermeneut, through whom he speaks to the world. An irreplaceable and inspiring partner, as he himself described her, touched by his own words, at the press conference held on April th preceding the vernissage of the big Roman exhibition. Piercing blue eyes, a Greek philosopher-like smile, long and eloquent silences, Jodice has always been a master of interpretation, going beyond the mere objective facts. His is a deeply ethical and experimental approach through which he explores a variety of techniques and art forms. His world is made up of strictly black and white images marking his ffty-year-long career and ongoing commitment. “In the past- says Mimmo Jodicewe did not come to Capri that often.
We stayed away from Naples for long periods”. However, in the past few years, as Angela Jodice points out, Capri has become one of the couple’s favorite and regular destinations. “To us- says Mimmo Jodice- Capri means mostly long, lovely walks, especially out of season, on nice warm days in early spring or late autumn. A magical period of the year for Capri, during which the island is covered in light mist and everything appears subdued, elusive, distant. As strange as it may seem, I am attracted by Capri’s silence, a sonorous silence, flled with muffed, evocative and musical echoes. I stay away from the island’s crowd and commotion which suppress its true nature and spirit, the roots of classicism. The Jodices have many stories to tell and
La mia ricerca, il mio lavoro mi portavano spesso lontano da Napoli.” Angela Jodice sottolinea però come negli ultimi anni l’isola sia divenuta per Mimmo e per lei una meta regolare, come si sia stabilita con Capri una nuova inattesa forma di appartenenza. “ Per noi- afferma Mimmo Jodice - Capri signifca soprattutto lunghe meravigliose passeggiate, specialmente fuori stagione, nelle prime giornate solatie al debutto della primavera o nel tardo autunno. Un periodo dell’anno che rende Capri magica, soffusa da foschie leggere, che rende tutto lontano, sfumato, imprendibile. Di Capri, potrà sembrare strano, mi affascina il silenzio, una forma di silenzio sonante, intrisa di echi ovattati, evocativi e musicali. lamento che talvolta ne confonde l’anima più vera, ne soffoca lo spirito originario, la radice della classicità. “ Per gli Jodice sono tanti gli aneddoti, le sfumature, gli incontri e le suggestioni legati alla loro vita caprese, che riafforano con dolcezza dai fles del ricordo.” La mia relazione con l’isola- aggiunge ancora Mimmodivenne fondamentale nei primi ’ , quando con Luigi Ghirri, che scattava quelle a colori, realizzammo le immagini fotografche per il libro Capri, di Cesare de Seta. Molti risvolti inconsueti, molti degli angoli più remoti e sospesi di questo luogo inimitabile, proprio allora mi divennero familiari, iniziarono a parlarmi con una lingua più intima e vicina. Cercavo di trovare una cifra personale per leggere la quintessenza di Capri, una bellezza intrecciata a un passato così carico di memoria e ritratta in mille maniere differenti.” Ma nel tempo le pagine del carnet caprese di Mimmo e Angela si sono arricchite di ulteriori episodi, di pagine rarefatte, poetiche.” Saranno forse vent’anni fa, sì credo siano passati almeno due decenni- seguita Jodice, chiedendo conferma ad Angela- , quando inerpicandosi sul sentiero che portava alle Grottelle, da una casa a mezza costa, lassù in alto, arrivavano dapprima quasi come impressioni remote, poi come grafe di note compiute e fnalmente armonie distinte, brani operistici wagneriani che parevano rimbalzare amplifcandosi sulle rocce. Ci accadde più volte. Liebestodt e fragranze di macchia mediterranea, l’arco naturale come sipario. Evidentemente c’era qualcuno che amava appassionatamente il grande compositore tedesco, la cui musica diveniva la perfetta colonna sonora di una Capri improvvisamente romantica, struggente ed eroica, estraniante e catartica. Là, alle Grottelle, dove negli anni ’ donna Peppinella serviva Curzio Malaparte e Norman Douglas, che si bevevano un bicchiere, godendosi l’incredibile panorama. “ La Capri di Mimmo Jodice, che si rivela attraverso le immagini del Maestro, un bianco e nero che riassume in sé la radiazione più sottile e profonda di mille tonalità cromatiche, è pensata anch’essa ritornando fno alle fonti della sua mitologia classica e mediterranea. Ma l’obiettivo di Jodice va ben oltre. Del luogo-Capri Mimmo comprende appieno la valenza di saga nordica, ne cattura i paesaggi e gli scorci su un mare di colpo geometrico, matematico e dilatato all’infnito, che si apparenta alla pittura di Caspar David Friedrich. Scogli scuri d’ombra densa o abbacinanti di luce, maestosi e intagliati come gotici manieri di sogno, piccole piazze, interni ed architetture isolane scevri da ogni presenza umana, metafsici e astratti, ma che al contempo “reclamano naufraghicome osservava recentemente Michele Smargiassi- esigono abitanti”. Mistero, segni scarniti, ancestrali e futuri, assenza sofferta dell’uomo che si cela, che sfugge. Il sentiero del Passetiello forse non sale più fno a Cetrella, le enormi concitate tele di Diefenbach alla Certosa diventano presagi, futtuano in uno spazio gessoso, zuccherino e friabile, che non si può più defnire. Mimmo Jodice ce l’ha voluta narrare così questa sua Capri, un’isola non più grande di uno scoglio dove tante vite si sono incrociate, tanti destini si sono compiuti.
dear memories to share about their life in Capri. “I felt an immediate bond with Capri- goes on Mimmo- when I went there, in the early ‘ s, with Luigi Ghirri, to take some photos for the book Capri by Cesare de Seta.
I became familiar with most of the island’s most hidden and distant corners, they spoke to me in a more confdential and intimate language. I tried to fnd my personal way of expressing Capri’s beauty, so closely intertwined with its history and interpreted in thousands of different ways”.
Over time, Mimmo and Angela have stored away many romantic and poetic memories of the island. “About twenty years ago- says Jodice, turning to Angela for confrmation- while climbing up the path leading to the Grottelle, we heard music coming from a house set halfway up the hill, at frst indistinct notes that became clearer and clearer and fnally Wagnerian pieces of opera that seemed echoing against the rocks and reverberating in the air.
It happened several times. Liebestodt and the scent of Mediterranean scrub with the natural arch rising as a curtain.
There was obviously someone deeply fond of the great German composer whose music became the perfect soundtrack of a suddenly romantic, poignant, cathartic Capri.
There, at the Grottelle, where, in the forties, Donna Peppinella attended to Curzio Malaparte and Norman Douglas who enjoyed a drink while admiring the breathtaking view”.
Mimmo Jodice’s Capri, as described in the Maestro’s photos, a world in black and white refecting a full spectrum of colors, is revealed by tracing it back to its sources of classical and Mediterranean mythology. However, Jodice’s lens goes beyond that. Mimmo captures Capri’s landscapes and views of a geometrical sea which widens out endlessly, like in the paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. Rocks deep in shadow or glowing with light, standing stately like Gothic dream castles, small piazzas, local interiors and architecture, spaces devoid of human subjects, although “they demand castaways- as Michele Smargiassi recently observed- they need residents”.
Mystery, bare, ancestral and future signs, a painful absence of human life. Perhaps the Passetiello path does not lead to Cetrella anymore, Diefenbach’s huge paintings of the Certosa become ominous, they foat in a chalky, sugary and friable, indefnable space.
That is how Mimmo Jodice sees Capri, an island as small as a rock where many lives crossed paths, many dreams were fulflled.

“Da una parte lo strapiombo sul mare. Dall’altra quaranta metri di cemento in cui sono annegate delle pietre: qua e là, oblò per osservare la gente che nuota in piscina”.
Con queste parole lo scultore Arnaldo Pomodoro descrive il suo omaggio al mare, inaugurato lo scorso giugno al Capri Palace di Anacapri: un altorilievo che corre lungo la parete del camminamento di ingresso dell’albergo e che rievoca tutti gli archetipi del mondo sommerso. Abbiamo incontrato l’artista per parlare dell’opera e del suo rapporto con Capri
Come è nato il progetto per l’opera Rive dei mari, una scultura - racconto lunga 36 metri per un’altezza di 3?
La prima volta che sono salito a piedi all’ingresso del Capri Palace Hotel mi sono subito accorto che questo muro era come “sordo” alla bellezza del luogo. Creare una suggestione non era semplice: non potevo sistemare semplicemente delle opere lungo il percorso, ma dovevo inventarne una che fosse una scultura-racconto ed evocasse le forme e gli echi del mare, i tesori che il mare raccoglie e ci restituisce.
Ci parli della scelta dei materiali
Fin dall’inizio della progettazione ho deciso di usare un materiale diverso da quelli che uso abitualmente e che si integrasse con i colori dell’isola – il bianco delle architetture, le tonalità della roccia, l’azzurro del mare e del cielo – ed esaltasse le caratteristiche del luogo: così ho pensato al fberglass bianco

These are the words used by Arnaldo Pomodoro to describe his tribute to the sea which was inaugurated in June last year at the Capri Palace Hotel in Anacapri: a high-relief sculpture running along the wall of the entranceway to the hotel and recalling all the archetypes of the sea world. We met the artist to talk about his work and his relationship with Capri.
How was the work Rive dei Mari, a 36-meter-long and 3-meter-high sculpture, born?
The first time I walked up to the entrance to the Capri Palace Hotel, I realized that the wall was “deaf” to the place’s beauty. However, creating a highly evocative work was no easy task. I couldn’t simply place some sculptures along the wall, I had to create a “sculptured story” evocative of the sea’s shapes and echoes, of all the treasures it holds and returns.
What about the materials you used?
I decided, from the outset, to use a material different from the one I usually use and that could easily blend in with the island’s colors- the white buildings, the rocks

Dagli oblò si vedono gli ospiti che nuotano nella piscina dell’hotel-One can see the guests swimming in the pool through the portholes
che ho già utilizzato per altre opere e che in questo caso è miscelato con polvere di marmo. La luce proveniente dalle aperture della piscina si espande nel camminamento, creando un gioco di rifessi azzurri con effetti di colore che si modifcano dall’alba alla notte, nell’illusione di trovarsi in mezzo al mare.
Quale storia racconta la sua opera caprese?
Camminando verso l’entrata del Capri Palace seguendo il percorso segnato dalla scultura vi si vedono immersi elementi e segni che ricordano le conchiglie e i fossili, gli strumenti della pesca e i detriti lasciati dall’uomo che il mare restituisce consumati e trasformati. E’ l’immaginario che ci viene dal mare, dal suo moto, dalla spiaggia, dallo scoglio. Dunque l’opera è un omaggio al mare, al mare che conserva dentro di sé il tempo e la storia.
Quali suggestioni si rintracciano nel suo lavoro al Capri Palace?
Sul rilievo ho riportato la trama dell’osso di seppia, un reperto primigenio della natura a cui devo la vitalità e la matericità delle mie superfci, che per me ha una valenza particolare essendo, prima ancora che un riferimento letterario, un elemento molto importante in senso tecnico ed espressivo per il mio lavoro.
Se dico Capri cosa le viene in mente?
I celebri faraglioni, la Grotta Azzurra, la passeggiata di via Krupp e poi Villa Malaparte, capolavoro di Adalberto Libera, un “volume” incastonato armoniosamente nella roccia, a strapiombo sul mare. Capri è l’esempio di una bellezza assoluta
in different tones, the blue sea and sky- and enhance the place’s typical landscape. So I decided to use white fiberglass, which I used before, but mixed with marble powder.
The light filtering through the swimming pool portholes is reflected on the wall and creates a play of light blue reflections that change during the day and give the impression of being at sea.
What story does your “Caprese” work of art tell?
When walking towards the entrance to the Capri Palace by following the path marked by the sculpture, one sees elements and signs reminiscent of shells and fossils, fishing tools and the debris left by man and returned, worn-out and transformed, by the sea. It is the power of imagination applied to the sea and its motion, to the beach and the rocks. The sculpture is a tribute to the sea which conserves time and history.
What was your sculpture at the Capri Palace inspired by?
The high-relief shows a cuttlebone, one of nature’s primordial finds which inspired the vitality and texture of my surfaces, which has a special meaning to me, it is a very important element for my work from the technical and expressive point of view.

Cosa signifca per lei quest’opera?
E’ stata per me un’esperienza straordinaria, perché è raro poter lavorare in piena libertà e poter esprimere la propria immaginazione e creatività senza condizionamenti. Ciò è stato possibile grazie all’intelligenza e alla sensibilità di Tonino Cacace.
Oltre l’opera, torna spesso sull’isola? Il luogo che preferisce?
Purtroppo dopo l’inaugurazione del Capri Palace Hotel avvenuta nel giugno dello scorso anno non sono più riuscito a tornare sull’isola per mancanza di tempo, ma mi auguro che si presenti presto un’occasione per tornarci.
Abbandonato per un attimo il suo stile rigoroso e geometrico, qui sembra davvero che la sua mano sia stata guidata dal mare. E’ stato così?
Certamente, per quest’opera la prima suggestione mi è venuta dal mare. E io, che solo a pensare di essere in acqua mi sento soffocare, guardo il mare di Capri, e mi piacerebbe essere un pesce.
La sua Fondazione compie un importante lavoro di promozione e diffusione dell’arte. Nel 2010 qual è secondo lei il ruolo dell’artista nella società ?
L’artista non può chiudersi in una torre d’avorio perché l’arte è sempre diretta alla società: il suo apporto è fondamentale soprattutto in periodi di grande incertezza e di profonde trasformazioni, come quelli in cui stiamo vivendo.

What does this work of art mean to you?
It was an extraordinary experience, because an artist can hardly ever work and express his creativity and imagination so freely. That was made possible by Tonino Cacace’s intelligence and sensitivity.
Do you often go back to the island? What is your favorite place there?
Unfortunately, after the inauguration at the Capri Palace Hotel in June last year, I’ve never had the time to go back, but I hope I will get the chance soon enough.
In this sculpture, you laid aside your geometric and minimalist style for once. It seems that your hand was guided by the sea. Is that true?
Yes, it is. My first source of inspiration for this sculpture was the sea. I hardly know how to swim, but when I look at Capri’s sea, I would like to be a fish.
Your Foundation is committed to the promotion and spread of art. What is, in your opinion, the role of an artist in modern society?
The artist cannot live in an ivory tower because art is always meant for the society: its contribution is fundamental in times of uncertainty and deep changes such as ours.

A journey through underground Naples scattered with artistic hotbeds
Fino dagli anni della Transavanguardia la realtà viva, pulsante e contraddittoria di Napoli si impasta come farina al lievito fertile dell’arte contemporanea. E l’acqua che tiene insieme questa miscela non comune è la cultura di questa città che transita con un’agilità unica al mondo dal popolare al colto, dai palazzi nobili ai bassifondi, che lava la pretenziosità e il supposto saper dell’arte, e fa emergere (ben più che altrove) l’istinto dell’atto creativo. Ecco i luoghi nevralgici di questa inedita fusione. Nella stretta via Settembrini, a due passi dal Duomo, sorge tra i palazzi con il bucato perennemente steso, il museo Madre (via Settembrini,ph. . ) depositario di opere di Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, Sol Lewitt, Mimmo Paladino, Richard Serra e Francesco Clemente. Il museo ospita fno al giugno la mostra The Possessed a cura di Vincenzo Trione: tele di grandi dimensioni di Ryan Mendoza, artista americano da anni trapiantato a Napoli che recupera tecniche, soluzioni e artifci dai maestri della storia dell’arte. Dal maggio fno al agosto il Madre, diventa teatro di un’altra grande retrospettiva, quella dedicata allo scultore austriaco Franz West. Oltre lavori, dagli anni ‘ ai giorni nostri, permettono di sperimentare la dimensione interattiva delle sue opere, per cui i visitatori sono invitati ad usare gli oggetti così che loro stessi diventino parte dell’opera stessa. A pochi passi dal Madre, il Lanifcio 25 (p.zza Enrico De Nicola,ph. . ) è lo spazio di riferimento della proposta artistica fuori circuito: mq ricavati in una ex fabbrica dell’ottocento. A journey through underground Naples scattered with artistic hotbeds
Since the transavanguard years, Naples’s lively cultural scene has been closely tied to contemporary art. The basic ingredient of this uncommon mixture is the city’s cultural background and environment which ranges from folk to classical, from the noble palaces to slums and makes the instinct of creativity prevail at all times (and more than anywhere else).
Here are the nerve centers of this uncommon blend.
In the narrow Via Settembrini, a stone’s throw from the Duomo, stands, between buildings with the washing permanently hanging out to dry, the Madre Museum (Via Settembrini - ph. ) which houses works of art by Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, Sol Lewitt, Mimmo Paladino, Richard Serra and Francesco Clemente. On view till June th , the exhibition The Possessed curated by Vincenzo Trione: thirteen big-sized paintings by Ryan Mendoza, an American artist who lives in Naples and uses the techniques of the great painters of the past. From May th to August rd, the Madre museum will house a big retrospective exhibit on the Austrian sculptor Franz West. Over thirty works of art, from the ‘ s to the present day, which allow visitors to experiment with the interactive dimension of his works by using the objects and becoming part of the work of art themselves.

The Naple’s artistic cultural environment ranges from folk to classical, from the noble palaces to slums
te ma farla, e qui le attività si moltiplicano con concerti serali e anche degustazioni, meglio, quindi, tenere d’occhio anche la programmazione (www.cra.na.it).
Altra kunsthalle d’avanguardia è Largo Baracche fondata da Giuseppe Ruffo e Pietro Tatafore nei Quartieri Spagnoli (via Bellini, - ph. ), a pochi passi dall’Accademia delle Belle Arti. Nella seconda guerra mondiale questo luogo era un rifugio antiaereo, ora il bunker labirintico è diventato una sperimentale factory che impiega l’arte come mezzo di sviluppo territoriale, utilizzando il folklore come un forte punto di riferimento. Attraverso un insolito percorso che parte da piazza Dante per inerpicarsi, attraverso la salita Tarsia, fno a Pontecorvo, dove permangono le tracce degli antichi orti e dei limoneti descritti dalle guida antiche, si giunge, alla Stazione Bellini, costruita a fne Ottocento per la fornitura dell’energia elettrica al nuovo Teatro Bellini. Qui ha sede il museo Hermann Nitsch, dedicato a uno dei più importanti personaggi dell’arte del secondo Novecento, protagonista dell’azionismo Viennese (vico Lungo Pontecorvo, /d - ph. . ). Nel quartiere di Chiaia, verso il mare, a Palazzo Roccella (uno dei più bei palazzi del ‘ ) dal Napoli ha il suo Centro di documentazione per le Arti Contemporanee. Il PAN, Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli è la prima struttura civica cittadina destinata alla funzione esclusiva e permanente di Centro per le Arti Contemporanee (via dei Mille, - ph. . ). Un vero e proprio archivio della memoria, in grado di offrire uno sguardo globale e articolato sull’arte contemporanea a Napoli negli ultimi quarant’anni. Per visitare invece l’ultimo nato, Napoli Novecento (Castel Sant’Elmo - ph. ) che ha aperto i battenti a marzo, si deve prendere la funicolare fno a Castel Sant’Elmo. Per questo nuovo Museo sono state selezionate ed esposte oltre opere realizzate tra il e il a Napoli. Infne, usciamo di nuovo dai palazzi per tornare in strada, anzi, sotto la strada dove il Metrò dell’arte, ovvero la linea della metropolitana, è un gioiello fnito addirittura sulle pagine del Times per le sue stazioni disseminate di opere dei più famosi esponenti dell’arte contemporanea: Jannis Kunnellis e Joseph Kosuth (stazione Dante), Mimmo Paladino (stazione Salvator Rosa), Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mario Merz (stazione Vanvitelli), Sandro Chia (stazione Materdei). Da non perdere la stazione Salvator Rosa, probabilmente il capolavoro della metropolitana di Napoli: nell’area circostante la stazione come in un centro Pompidou napoletano, un parco giochi ospita opere di Mimmo e Salvatore Paladino, sculture di Barisani, Dalisi, Longobardi, Mocika e Perez, mosaici di Ugo Marano. Ma è interessante anche l’operazione di coinvolgimento degli edifci circostanti, le cui fancate sono state decorate da Gianni Pisani, Mimmo Rotella, Ernesto Tatafore, Renato Barisani, Mimmo Paladino.

Another local avant-garde kunsthalle is Largo Baracche founded by Giuseppe Ruffo and Pietro Tatafore in the Quartieri Spagnoli area (Via Bellini - ph. ), not far from the Academy of Art. During World War Two, this place was an air-raid shelter. Today, the maze-like bunker is an art factory which uses art as a means of territorial development and folklore as a point of reference.
By walking up from Piazza Dante, through the Tarsia uphill, to Pontecorvo, where remains of the ancient vegetable gardens and lemon groves described in the guides are visible, one reaches the Stazione Bellini, built in the late s to supply the Bellini Theatre with electric energy.
Here stands the Herman Nitsch Museum, devoted to one of the most celebrated artists of the s and a key fgure of the Vienna actionist movement (Vico Lungo Pontecorvo /d- ph. ).
In the heart of the Chiaia neighbourhood, Palazzo Roccella, one of the city’s most imposing eighteenth-century buildings, has been the seat of Naples’s Documentation Center for Contemporary Arts since .
PAN, Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli, is the frst public building meant as a permanent center for contemporary arts (Via dei Mille - ph. ), which offers in-depth information and documentation on contemporary art in Naples of the past forty years.
If we go back to the streets or, to be more precise, below the streets, we fnd the Metrò dell’arte, that is, line of the subway which has been mentioned even in The Times for its stations scattered with works by the greatest contemporary artists: Jannis Kounellis and Joseph Kosuth (Dante station), Mimmo Paladino (Salvator Rosa station), Michelangelo Pistoletto and Mario Merz (Vanvitelli station), Sandro Chia (Materdei station).
Not to be missed is the Salvator Rosa station, perhaps Naples’s masterpiece of contemporary art: surrounding the station like a Neapolitan-style Centre Pompidou, an amusement park houses works by Mimmo and Salvatore Paladino, sculptures by Barisani, Dalisi, Longobardi, Mocika and Perez and mosaic works by Ugo Marano. The sides of the surroundings buildings have been painted by Gianni Pisani, Mimmo Rotella, Ernesto Tatafore, Renato Barisani, Mimmo Paladino.

Mr. Kapstein, cosa faceva a Capri in quel periodo?
Io ero un giovane pilota di anni, comandante di un B , bombardiere d’attacco tattico, durante lo sbarco anglo-americano a Salerno. Il punto di raduno per tutti gli aerei che supportavano lo sbarco era proprio sui Faraglioni, che rappresentavano il punto di riferimento per la nostra navigazione verso Salerno.
Tutto il giorno sopra i cieli dell’isola?
Si e ogni giorno aspettavamo che ci fossero comunicati dal comando generale americano, su informazione dei nostri aerei ricognitori, gli obiettivi giornalieri da bombardare e la posizione delle truppe tedesche. Capri non fu mai tra gli obiettivi.
Miracolosamente i tedeschi non ebbero il tempo di posizionare delle batterie anti-aeree o delle imbarcazioni motosiluranti sull’isola di Capri e non utilizzarono il porto dell’isola militarmente.
Quale fu l’epilogo?
Scegliendo altre postazioni i tedeschi segnarono la storia di posti come Capua e Monte Cassino, che furono bombardate e distrutte e non ebbero la stessa fortuna di Capri. L’isola, grazie a Dio, non fu mai bombardata e di conseguenza, miracolosamente salva.
La sua prima volta a Capri?
Nel dicembre , dopo la liberazione di Napoli e della costiera Amalftana. Come eravamo felici, il mio equipaggio ed io, nel vedere Capri inviolata dai bombardamenti, con le sue meraviglie che quella terribile guerra non aveva alterato.
Qual era l’atmosfera sull’isola?
Capri era un paradiso, la sua bellezza era intatta, ma realizzammo che aveva sofferto di profonde privazioni, e continuava a subire le conseguenze della guerra a nord di Napoli. Furono giorni di gioia, anche perché non avevamo mai considerato l’Italia come un nemico, a differenza della Germania. L’accoglienza che ricevemmo fu magnifca, e ci rendemmo

Mr. Kapstein, what were you doing in Capri at that time?
I was a young year old pilot of a B , tactic attack bomber, during the disembarking of the Anglo-Americans at Salerno.
The gathering point for all the planes that were supporting the disembarking was over the Faraglioni, it represented a reference point for our navigation towards Salerno.
All day over the sky of the island?
Yes and every day we waited for the American General commander to inform us, on information gathered by our reconnaissance planes , of the daily objectives to be bombed and the position of the German troops. Capri was never among the objectives.
Miraculously the Germans did not have the time to position anti aircraft gun batteries or torpedo boats on the island of Capri and never used the island’s port on a military level.
What was the epilogue?
By choosing different stationings the Germans marked the history of places such as Capua and Monte Cassino, which were bombed and destroyed and didn’t have the same good fortune as Capri. The island, thank God, was never bombed and as a consequence miraculously safe. Your frst time in Capri?
In December , after the liberation of Napoli and the Amalf coast. My air crew and I were so happy to see Capri un violated by bombing, with its wonders unaltered by that terrible war.
What was the atmosphere on the Island?
Capri was a paradise, it was intact but we realised that it had suffered profound privations, and was continuing to suffer the consequences of the war in the north of Naples. They were days of joy also because we had never considered Italy as an enemy, unlike Germany. The welcome we received was marvellous, and we realised that our presence gave them the certainty of being liberated.

John Kapstein, che nel lontano vide il nostro paese teatro di cruenti bombardamenti, non immaginava che anni dopo avrebbe diviso il suo tempo, al fanco della bella baronessa Luciana M. Lieto, tra Megeve, incantevole bomboniera francese e proprio quella Capri che sorvolava ripetutamente con il suo B . Successivamente ha moltiplicato le azioni per riavvicinare l’America alla Russia durante la guerra fredda. Per questo il ottobre ha ricevuto a Parigi, dalle mani dell’ambasciatore russo in Francia, S.E.M. Alexandre Orlov, l’Ordre de l’Amititié. Questo riconoscimento attribuitogli inquadra in pieno il ruolo chiave che John Kapstein ha avuto nello scambio culturale dei due Paesi. Ruolo svolto, in modo più che effcace, anche attraverso il cinema. Perché cita sempre la frase del flosofo inglese John Donne: “La guerra può distruggere tutto, ma la cultura e il commercio possono fare del tuo nemico un amico”?
Negli anni ’ e ‘ , in piena guerra fredda, vivevo tra Mosca, Londra e Parigi. Ero il direttore generale di Satra, una società civile americana molto importante nel commercio di materiale strategico. Dopo la frma degli accordi culturali tra la Russia, la Francia e gli Stati Uniti, fu creata la società Satra Films e Progetti Speciali di cui divenni presidente e che ebbe un ruolo fondamentale nel riavvicinamento tra la Russia e gli Usa. Organizzai i primi festival del cinema russo in Francia e negli Stati Uniti, e tra il e il riuscimmo a vincere oscar come migliore flm straniero con Oblomov, Guerra e Pace e Dersou Ouzala. La Russia iniziò a mandare i suoi musicisti, ballerini e artisti in Francia e negli Usa e ricominciarono gli scambi culturali che hanno reso pacifche le relazioni tra i due paesi.

In the s and s, during the cold war, I lived between Moscow, London and Paris. I was the general manager of Satra, an American civil society very important in the business of strategic material. After the signing of the cultural accord between Russia, France and the United States, Satra Films and Special Projects was set up, of which I became president, and it had a fundamental role in the reconciliation between Russia and the U.S.A. I organised the frst Russian cinema festivals in France and in the United States and between and we managed to win Oscars for best foreign flm with Oblomov, War and Peace and Dersou Ouzala. Russia started sending its musicians, dancers and artists to France and to the U.S.A and cultural exchanges pacifed relations between the two countries.

14 maggio: l’isola in festa per San Costanzo. Che tenne lontani i Saraceni May 14th: the island celebrates San Costanzo. Who stove the Saracens off
Chissà cosa avrà pensato il vescovo di Costantinopoli, Costanzo, quando approdò su questa minuscola isola del Mediterraneo durante la tempesta che sorprese il suo buxio mentre veleggiava verso la Turchia. Quel profumo di ginestre gli sarà sembrato così intenso e quel mare così blu mentre stremato dalla malattia moriva poco dopo. Pur nel poco tempo che si fermò a Capri deve aver amato questo luogo. E soprattutto la sua gente, che evangelizzò con determinazione. Era il 677 d.C. e l’amore di Costanzo per Capri fu subito ricambiato dagli abitanti con una venerazione incondizionata: nei secoli a seguire a lui furono attribuiti diversi miracoli e, in particolare, la protezione dalle incursioni saracene che avevano già toccato Amalf, Li Galli e Ischia. Seppellito nella basilica a lui dedicata, fu poi dichiarato Santo Protettore dell’isola. Da sempre si festeggia il 14 di maggio. Anticamente, nella settimana precedente alla festa, veniva innalzato, tra l’ex Cattedrale e Palazzo Cerio, un quadro raffgurante il Santo che scaccia i Saraceni dall’isola. Ancora oggi la Piazzetta viene illuminata a festa e sempre in piazza è allestito un palco dove la sera del 14 si balla e si canta su brani di musica lirica e di tradizione popolare. La sera della vigilia, prima dei vespri, il simulacro del Santo - che durante tutto l’anno viene custodito in una grande teca presso la sacrestia - viene esposto sul lato sinistro dell’altare maggiore, tra fori e candele. Il busto d’argento scolpito è attribuito all’architetto Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. Risale al 1715 quando i fedeli con il loro contributo e su interessamento del vescovo Michele Gallo Vandeneyde vollero sostituirlo a quello in legno dorato di antica e semplice fattura. Una reliquia del Santo è invece posta in una teca nel paliotto di marmo dell’altare a lui dedicato. Mentre il frammento sacro più importante, dal punto di vista storico e artistico, è inserito in un reliquario di legno dorato del XIV secolo, visibile in sacrestia. La teca contenente la reliquia, opera pregevole del maestro orafo di Napoli Simone da Siena, è detta degli struzzi, i simboli presenti nello stemma del re Luigi d’Angiò-Ungheria che a suo tempo ne fece dono ai Certosini di Capri. La mattina del 14 maggio, alla presenza dell’Arcivescovo di Sorrento e di tutto il Capitolo, hanno inizio le celebrazioni solenni durante le quali viene dispensato il sacramento della Cresima. Nel pomeriggio ha luogo la processione che dopo un breve giro per le vie del centro, scende per via Acquaviva per raggiungere Marina Grande. Questo rito ebbe inizio nel 1560 quando il simulacro del Santo e la sede vescovile furono spostati da Marina Grande alla cattedrale di S. Stefano, dando origine così alla consuetudine di riportarlo nella primitiva sede il giorno della sua ricorrenza. Apre il corteo una banda musicale seguita da un lungo gonfalone amaranto a forma di vela, forse in ricordo della venuta del Santo sull’isola. Seguono varie Confraternite. Who knows what crossed the mind of the bishop of Costantinople when he landed on this tiny island in the Mediterranean sea, after being caught in a storm while sailing towards Turkey. The scent of Spanish broom must have seemed so intense and the sea so blue while, terribly sick, he died shortly after. Despite the short time he spent in Capri, he must have deeply loved the island and its people whom he was determined to evangelize and convert to God. It was the year 67 A.D. Costanzo’s love of the island was returned by the locals: they venerated him unconditionally and in the centuries that followed he was believed to have performed miracles and, in particular, to have protected the island from the Saracens who had previously invaded Amalf, Li Galli and Ischia. He was buried in the church named after him and was declared Patron Saint of the island. He is celebrated on May 14th. In ancient times, in the week preceding the celebrations, a painting, depicting the Saint staving the Saracens off the island, was raised between the former Cathedral and Palazzo Cerio. Today, the piazzetta is flled with lights and a stage on which, on the evening of May 14th, people dance and sing folk songs and pieces of opera music. On the eve of the Patron Saint’s day, before the Vespers, the Saint’s simulacrum- which is kept all year round in a big glass case in the sacristy, is shown to the public on the left side of the high altar, among fowers and candles. The silver sculptured bust is attributed to architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. It dates back to 1715 when the congregation, helped by bishop Michele Gallo Vandeneyde, replaced a simpler gilt wood one with it. Instead, a relic of the Saint is placed in a glass case in the marble frontal of the altar dedicated to him. However, the most important relic, from the artistic and historical point of view, is placed in a gilt wood reliquary dating back to the 14th century which is shown in the sacristy. The case containing the relic, made by the Neapolitan goldsmith Simone da Siena, is named degli struzzi ( of the ostriches), after the symbols featured on the coat of arms of Louis of Anjou, King of Naples, who gave it to Capri’s Carthusian monks.
The solemn celebrations begin on May 14th , in the morning, in the presence of the Archbishop of Sorrento and the whole Chapter who administer the sacrament of confrmation. In the afternoon, the procession goes through the downtown streets and then heads for Marina Grande through Via Acquaviva. This ritual began in 1560 when the Saint’s simulacrum and the bishop’s see were moved from Marina Grande to the Cathedral of S.Stefano. Therefore, on the Patron Saint’s day, it is returned to its original seat. cotta bianca, infne tutto il clero che reca in mano ceri accesi e il Santo Patrono portato a spalla dai giovani confratelli della San Filippo Neri. Immediatamente dietro sflano il sindaco e la giunta cittadina con lo stendardo retto da un vigile urbano. Seguono i rappresentanti delle forze armate e la moltitudine dei fedeli. Dai balconi e dalle terrazze delle case i devoti, al passaggio del Santo, fanno piovere sulla sua statua petali di rose e fori di ginestra, chiamati qui fori di San Costanzo. Lungo tutto il percorso si intensifca lo sparo di mortaretti che raggiunge il suo culmine a Marina Grande, dove si unisce il fschio delle sirene dei vaporetti in sosta nel porto. La processione attraversa tutto il borgo marinaro e dopo l’ultimo tratto di via Cristoforo Colombo, raggiunge la piccola chiesta bizantina. La sera vengono sparati magnifci fuochi. A Marina Grande il Santo sosta per far ritorno a Capri la settimana seguente. Dopo le funzioni religiose la processione percorre la carrozzabile in senso inverso, passando per la località Due Golf, per via Roma fno all’ex Cattedrale. L’eterno dissidio con Sant’Antonio, protettore che gli abitanti di Anacapri hanno scelto per la loro parte di isola e che si festeggia il 13 giugno con una festa altrettanto colorata e ricca di tradizioni, sembra essersi acquietato negli ultimi anni. Oggi le due feste convivono pacifcamente, con beneplacito dei cittadini e dei due santi, che da lassù sorrideranno a questo splendido scampolo di terra che non si fa mancare niente. The statue of the Saint stops in Marina Grande and is returned to Capri a week later the island. Several confraternities follow. The oldest one is named after San Filippo Neri and the members wear a white tunic and a red mozzetta. A cross is carried by altar boys wearing a red tunic and a white surplice, followed by clergymen holding lighted church candles and the statue of the Patron Saint carried on the back of the members of the San Filippo Neri Confraternity. Then come the Mayor, the members of the town government, a local policeman holding the banner, the representatives of the armed forces and the many devotees. People throw rose petals and Spanish broom fowers, known in Capri as San Costanzo fowers, from the terraces and balconies while the statue of the Saint goes by. The noise of lit frecrackers adds to the whistle of the vaporettos in the port. The procession goes through the town’s narrow streets and, at the end of Via Cristoforo Colombo, it reaches the small Byzantine church. A frework show is held in the evening. The Saint stays in Marina Grande for a week. After the religious ceremony, the procession goes back to the former cathedral through the Due Golf area and Via Roma. Instead, the inhabitants of Anacapri declared Sant’Antonio their Patron Saint and celebrations, as picturesque and traditional as those held for San Costanzo, take place on June 13th on the other side of the island. The two celebrations coexist peacefully, with the approval of the locals and of the two saints who probably smile down on this beautiful small plot of land that seems to want for nothing. La costiera amalftana è uno di quei gioielli assoluti nell’immaginario internazionale. Diffcile, quasi impossibile percorrerne tutte le bellezze, il patrimonio d’arte e d’artigianato, la ricchezza della cucina. Arduo enumerare le grotte, le leggende, i resti archeologici e le tradizioni. Attraverso la scelta di sei soli luoghi, capaci di riassumere le formidabili caratteristiche che hanno ordito questo mito irripetibile, ci piacerebbe dare altrettante combinazioni per arrivare a comprendere le radici profonde di una terra per molti versi integra, sincera, popolare e aristocratica insieme.
Sorrento. Non proprio agevole da raggiungere, percorrendo un sentiero che si dipana tra agrumeti e uliveti, il cosiddetto Bagno della Regina Giovanna si trova nei pressi di Punta del Capo. Il mare penetra nella roccia, frastagliata ed erosa e forma uno specchio acqueo dai rifessi turchese, verde smeraldo e viola iris. In epoca romana questo era il ninfeo della fastosa villa di Pollio Felice, residenza imperiale che corrisponde a una dimora di piacere affacciata sul Mediterraneo descritta dal poeta latino Publio Papinio Stazio.
Positano. Dai viaggiatori russi e nordici che vi approdano nell’Ottocento, passando per l’age d’or mondana e culturale del Maestro Kempff e di Franco Zeffrelli, insediatosi nei primi ‘7 a Villa Tre Ville, fno all’ odierna creme di Hollywood, il suo fa-

The Amalf coast is one of those absolute jewels in the International imaginary. Diffcult, almost impossible to trace all the beauties, the art and handcraft heritage, the richness of the food. Hard to count and list the grottos, the legends, archaeological remains and the traditions. Though the choice of only six places, capable of summarising in them the tremendous characteristics that have plotted this unrepeatable myth, we would like to give more combinations in order to comprehend the deep roots of this land still integrate in many ways, sincere, popular and aristocratic together.
Sorrento. Not easy to reach, walking through a path that unravels between fragrant citrus and olive trees, the so called “Bagno della Regina Giovanna” is found in the area of Punta del Capo. The sea penetrates the rocks that are jagged and eroded and creates a stretch of water with turquoise, emerald green and iris violet shades. In the Roman period this was the ninfeo of the sumptuous villa of Pollio Felice, imperial residence that corresponds to a pleasure residence facing the Mediterranean sea described by the Latin poet Publio Papinio Stazio.
Positano. From the Russian and northern travellers that started coming in the nineteenth century, going through the worldly and cultural golden age of the Maestro Kempff and of Franco Zeffrelli installed in the beginning of the 7 ’s at Villa Tre Ville, up to today’s cream of Hollywood, its fascination seems inoxidizable. Villages and towns were born along the coast, exploiting little bays and terracings
able, the landing by boat, often among restless waves, onto a wobbly wooden runway to the small beach of Laurito, populated by an odd mélange of a few happy Neapolitans and locals, tourists and sometimes celebrities. Da Adolfo on the high pile-dwelling, is the must of Laurito. Sergio is a perfect landlord and he offers grilled fsh and the famous mozzarellas wrapped in lemon leaf.
Vettica Maggiore, fraction of Praiano totally in the arms of the sun, an underestimated village, two steps away from the sparkling worldly stage of Positano. Absolute characteristic of the town, scenographically arranged on the edge of a fall, is the exposition to the sun, that allows one to enjoy a long sunset. The conformity of Vettica is particular, it reminds one of a Greek hora. Plastered white houses, graceful minute patrician residences of the eighteenth-nineteenth century with tympanums, balconies, doors and loggia’s which seem to have been stolen from an ancient Neapolitan nativity scene. Among luxuriant vegetable gardens, bougainvilleas and waterfalls, opulent semi-secret gardens, one can walk round on foot or go by donkey, among steps, streets and piazzas. The view fies, its glides all the way to the Faraglioni of Capri. Vettica is still a real village, with old men who play bowls next to the churchyard of Matrix church. It is a nest of intellectuals, of eccentric people and artists. The American painter Sol Lewitt, who’s wife originated from this area, during the summer months lived in Praiano, just round the corner. During the summer season the events dedicated to saints are striking and plentiful. High over the candid weft of the village is the church of Saint Domenico, which is entirely illuminated with candle light on scino pare inossidabile. Imperdibile l’approdo in barca, spesso tra onde agitate, su una traballante passerella lignea alla piccola spiaggia di Laurito, popolata da uno strano mélange di happy few partenopei e locali, di turisti e talvolta celebrities. Da Adolfo, sulle alte palaftte, è il must di Laurito. Sergio è un perfetto padrone di casa e la sua cucina offre grigliate di pesce e la celebre mozzarella in foglia di limone. Vettica Maggiore, frazione di Praiano totalmente offerta all’abbraccio del sole, è un villaggio misconosciuto a due soli passi dallo scintillante palcoscenico mondano di Positano. Caratteristica assoluta del villaggio, scenografcamente disposto sulle pendici di un declivio, è proprio l’esposizione solare, che consente di godersi un lunghissimo tramonto. Particolare la conformazione di Vettica, che ricorda quella di una hora greca isolana. Case bianche d’intonaco, aggraziate minuscole residenze patrizie sette-ottocentesche con timpani, terrazze, portali e logge che paiono rubati a un antico presepe napoletano. Tra orti rigogliosi, bougainvillee a cascata, giardini semisegreti e opulenti, ci si aggira a piedi e a dorso di mulo, attraverso scalette e viuzze, slarghi e piazzette. La vista vola, si libra fno ai Faraglioni di Capri. Vettica è ancora un paese vero, con i vecchi che giocano a bocce accanto al sagrato della chiesa matrice. E’ un nido di intellettuali, di eccentrici e artisti. Il pittore americano Sol Lewitt, la cui moglie era originaria di questi luoghi, nei mesi d’estate abitava a Praiano, appena girato l’angolo. trova la chiesa di San Domenico, che viene interamente illuminata a lumini in occasione della ricorrenza patronale. Il rifugio di Ruggeri d’Agerola. Per raggiungere il fordo di Furore, spettacolare unicum geologico simile a quelli norvegesi, si può imboccare una scalinata di più di gradini venendo giù dalla statale, oppure approdarvi via mare in barca, passando sotto il ponte su cui corre la strada Amalf-Positano. Il vallone è una profonda incisione nella montagna che si trova alle spalle di Praiano, pazientemente scavata nei millenni ad opera di un torrente che scende a precipizio dall’altopiano di Agerola. Alle radici dello strapiombo, una manciata di case si affaccia su un’angusta spiaggia di ciottoli con un effetto teatrale e pittoresco. Tra le asprezze della gola tuttora nidifcano gli ultimi esemplari di falco pellegrino. Furore custodisce i codici di una propria memoria libertaria. Nel corso dei secoli infatti, qui trovarono riparo il bandito Ruggeri d’Agerola, protagonista della decima novella della IV giornata del Decamerone, l’eretico Fra’ Diavolo e Maco del Sacco, fondatore della setta dei Sacconi. Ravello. E’ notizia recente l’apertura dell’auditorium realizzato su progetto dell’architetto brasiliano Oscar Niemeyer, classe 9 7. Ma a Ravello, aristocratica cittadina issata su uno sperone di roccia alto sul mare, la musica ha diritto di cittadinanza da sempre, o almeno da quando, in pieno XIX secolo, l’ostinata fantasia di un genio quale Richard Wagner decise di scegliere il giardino di Villa Rufolo quale modello per il giardino fatato di Klingsor del suo mistico Parsifal. L’annuale festival musicale e teatrale estivo è ormai una realtà nota in tutto il mondo, così

The Valley is a deep incision in the mountain at the back of Praianoo, patently excavated in the millenniums by a torrent that goes down radically from the plateau of Agerola. At the routes of the fall, a handful of houses that face a narrow triangular pebble stone beach that gives a theatrical and picturesque effect. Among the severity of this place still today the last peregrine falcons nest. But Furore keeps the codes of its own anarchic memory. In fact centuries ago the bandit Ruggeri d’Agerola found his shelter here, protagonist of the tenth novel of the IV day of the Decamerone , the heretical Fra’ Diavolo and Maco del Sacco, founder of the “Sacconi” sect. Ravello. The opening of the auditorium realised from the project by the legendary Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, born in 9 7, is recent news. Il complesso risale alla prima metà del I secolo d.C. e, probabilmente, vista l’imponenza di quanto ne rimane, appartenne a un infuente e dovizioso personaggio della corte imperiale. Costruita proprio sul mare la villa possedeva un approdo riparato e diffcilmente accessibile, scelto evidentemente per la facilità di difesa in caso di aggressione. Il vicino torrente garantiva l’approvvigionamento d’acqua dolce, che veniva convogliata in apposite cisterne che alimentavano le terme e la piscina. Oggi, dell’edifcio residenziale patrizio restano l’ampio Viridarium e il cortile con piscina centrale. Particolarmente evocativo il corpo centrale che contiene il Triclinio, detto anche Ninfeo. Sempre a Maiori si protende nel mare la mole possente della Torre Normanna. Lo sperone roccioso di Capo d’Orso invece, scinde nettamente la valle di Tramonti da quella di Cava dei Tirreni. Dal Capo il panorama si spalanca superbo fno a Capri e a Punta Campanella.
the splendour of Villa Cimbrone, the suggestion of the monasteries, the uniqueness of the air and of the panorama, the solemn strength of the Duomo with a bronze door, made by Barisano da Trani in 79 and the marble Pulpit of the gospel, decorated by carvings and mosaics, built in 7 by the noble Nicola Rufolo who commissioned it to Niccolò di Bartolomeo da Foggia. One must not forget illustrious guests habitué between the 5 ’s and the 6 ’s, among whom Truman Capote, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill, very close thanks to the Urso friends in nearby Conca dei Marini, Gianni and Marella Agnelli.
The Roman Villa in Minori is one of the major Roman monuments in the Salerno area. This building goes back to the frst half of the frst century AD and, probably, having seen the impressiveness of what is left, belonged to an infuential and lavish personality of the Imperial court. Built right on the seafront, exposed south, the villa owned a hidden mooring, diffcult to access, evidently chosen for ease of defence in case of aggression. The nearby torrent guaranteed the supply of drinking water, that was conveyed into a storage tank with cisterns that supplied the thermal area and the swimming pool. Today, of the residential patrician building there is left the wide Viridarium, the courtyard with central swimming pool. Particularly evocative is the central area that contains the Triclinio, also called ninfeo. In Maiori the strong Norman tower slips into the sea. The rock spur of Capo d’Orso, neatly separates the valley of Tramonti from the one of Cava dei Tirreni. From Capo the panorama opens up superbly up to Capri and Punta Campanella.

Quando il Vesuvio eruttò il agosto del d.C., la città di Herculaneum e i suoi . abitanti furono inghiottiti da nuvole di materiale piroclastico tossico la cui altissima temperatura provocò morte istantanea e seppellì gli edifci sotto trenta metri di fango vulcanico. E’ la qualità di questo fango che ha determinato l’eccezionale stato di conservazione della cittadina; contrariamente alla cenere e pomice che caddero su Pompei, questa sostanza si solidifcò rapidamente e creò un sigillo che lasciò gli edifci (inclusi, in molti casi, i secondi piani), e anche materiale organico, intatti. Il risultato è uno straordinario contenitore per le generazioni future, forse meno famoso di Pompei ma certamente più vivo. Situata nell’entroterra sul lato sud-occidentale del Vesuvio, l’antica città di Herculaneum si ritiene sia stata fondata nel IV secolo a.C., anche se la maggior parte di ciò che vediamo oggi risale a anni più tardi. E’ diffcile da credere oggi, ma la città un tempo sorgeva su una scogliera a picco sul mare e tra due fumi (inter duos fuvios). Il sito, costruito secondo la classica pianta romana a griglia con i suoi cinque cardines intersecati da tre decumani, è molto più piccolo di Pompei, ma ciò che è visibile oggi è solo una parte dell’antica città che si estendeva su circa venti ettari; il resto rimane sepolto sotto strati di roccia e fango vulcanico sotto la moderna città di Ercolano.
L’accesso al sito è attraverso una rampa che sorge a circa trenta metri sotto il moderno livello stradale e che offre una buona panoramica della cittadina romana con il Vesuvio che incombe minacciosamente vicino. Un’altra rampa conduce attraverso un tunnel scavato nella roccia al tratto di costa dove si possono vedere i fornici ad arco che un tempo venivano usati come magazzini o rimesse per barche. Negli anni , circa scheletri umani furono ritrovati qui, insieme con gioielli, monete,
When Vesuvius erupted on August th, AD, the town of Herculaneum and its , inhabitants were engulfed in clouds of burning, noxious pyroclastic material whose extreme heat caused instant death and buried buildings under a -metre layer of volcanic mud. It is the particular quality of this mud that is responsible for the remarkable degree of preservation found here; in contrast to the ash and pumice that rained down on Pompeii, this substance quickly solidifed and created a seal which left buildings (including, in many cases, their second storeys) and even organic material intact. The result is an extraordinarily vivid time capsule, less famous than Pompeii maybe, but arguably more alive.
Situated just inland on the south-west side of Vesuvius, the once exclusive town of ancient Herculaneum is believed to have been founded in the th century BC although most of what we see today was dates from some years later. It’s diffcult to believe nowadays, but the town once stood on a sheer cliff above the sea and in between two rivers (’inter duos fuvios’). The site, built on a classic Roman grid plan with its fve cardines criss-crossed by three decumani, is much smaller than Pompeii, but what you see is only part of the ancient town which covered around hectares; the rest remains buried under layers of volcanic rock and mud beneath the modern town of Ercolano. Access to the site is via a ramp that lies some metres below modern street level and which gives a good overview of the Roman town as Vesuvius looms threateningly close. Another ramp leads down through a tunnel in the solid rock, emerging at the ancient shoreline where you can see the arched fornici which were used as storerooms or boat houses. chiavi di casa e attrezzi da lavoro; quei poveretti, avendo arraffato i loro beni più preziosi, probabilmente aspettavano di essere salvati via mare quando furono colpiti dalla letale eruzione vulcanica.
Dalla terrazza al di sopra dei fornici, si entra nelle Terme Suburbane, uno dei complessi termali meglio conservati dell’antichità, dove si può ammirare un delicato lavoro di stucco in rilevo, porte in legno e cornici di fnestre straordinariamente ben conservate e una fornace intatta.
Dalle terme, attraverso la rampa, si raggiunge la Casa dei Cervi, una tra le più grandiose ville dell’antica cittadina, che prende il nome dalle due statue di cervi aggrediti dai cani che sorgono nel bellissimo giardino completato dalla terrazza che un tempo si affacciava sul mare. Appena prima dell’incrocio del Cardo e Decumano, sorge la Taberna di Priapo con le sue sale d’attesa sul retro (dove ai clienti si offriva ben più che vino e cibo) e, accanto, il thermopolium, l’equivalente nel mondo antico del fast food moderno dove le anfore venivano inserite nei banconi di marmo per tenere il cibo in caldo. Oltre il Cardo si trova l’entrata a colonne della Palestra più grande della città, risalente all’età augustea ( a.C. – d.C.), dove i Romani trascorrevano il tempo libero giocando a palla, facendo la lotta o sguazzando in una delle due piscine. Sola una sezione della palestra è stata portata alla luce; il resto rimane sepolto sotto fango vulcanico solidifcato.
Verso la fne del Cardo IV, si trova la grande, un tempo lussuosa Casa dell’Atrio a Mosaico con un pavimento di mosaico a disegni geometrici nell’atrio, dei discreti dipinti murali e un giardino porticato. Il tablinum presenta tre navate separate da elaborate colonne, un po’ come in una basilica, ed è l’unico esempio di questo stile architettonico nell’area vesuviana. All’incrocio con il Decumano Inferiore sorge la grande Casa
s, together with items of jewellery and coins, keys to houses and work tools; the poor souls, having grabbed their most valuable assets, were probably waiting to be rescued by sea when the lethal spew from the volcano hit. From the terrace above the fornici, you enter the Terme Suburbane bath complex, one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in antiquity where you can see delicate stucco relief work, extraordinarily well-preserved wooden doors and window frames and an intact central furnace. Up the ramp from the baths lies the Casa dei Cervi, among the grandest villas of the ancient city, named after the two statues of deer being attacked by dogs that stand in its showpiece garden complete with once sea-facing terrace. Just before the crossroads of the Cardo and Decumano lies the Taberna di Priapo with its waiting rooms at the back (where customers would have been offered more than just food and drink) and, next door, a thermopolium, the ancient equivalent of a fast food joint where amphores were set into marble counters to keep food warm. Across the Cardo is the columned entrance to the town’s large Palestra, dating from the Augustinian era ( BC- AD), where the Romans passed their leisure time playing ball games, wrestling or wallowing in one of two swimming pools. Only a section of the palestra has been excavated; the rest remains buried under solidifed volcanic mud. Towards the bottom of Cardo IV is the is huge, once-luxurious Casa del Atrio a Mosaico with a geometrically-patterned mosaic pavement in the atrium, some good wall paintings and a porticoed garden. The tablinum has three aisles separated by elaborate pillars, a bit like a basilica, and is the only example of this architectural form in the Vesuvius area. del Tremezzo di Legno che prende il nome dalla parzialmente carbonizzata parete divisoria di legno che separa l’atrium (a giardino) dal tablinum (lo studio). Dall’altra parte del Decumano si trova l’ingresso alla sezione femminile dei Bagni Centrali; la sezione maschile si raggiunge attraverso la palestra a colonne e ricoperta d’erba ma anche attraverso l’ingresso sul Cardo III. Osservate gli spogliatoi con gli scaffali per depositarvi le toghe e altri oggetti personali, i bellissimi pavimenti a mosaico bianchi e neri (quelli nella sezione femminile sono particolarmente ben conservati), il rotondo frigidarium (per i bagni freddi) decorati con dipinti di pesci e il vicino calidarium con la sua vasca di acqua calda. Oltrepassato il Cardo IV e una bottega con gli scaffali pieni di anfore, si trova la Casa di Nettuno e Anftrite che prende il nome dai soggetti dello splendido mosaico blu nel nymphaeum sul retro della casa. Accanto sorge la Casa del Bel Cortile a due piani che, oltre a un delizioso cortile, fa mostra, nella stanza principale, di una teca di vetro contenente gli scheletri di un ragazzo quindicenne, di un giovane uomo e di una donna, tutti ritrovati sulla spiaggia. Nell’angolo in alto a sinistra del sito sorge l’imponente Sede degli Augustali, la sede amministrativa della città dedicata all’Imperatore Augusto e che conserva due belle pitture murali. La famosa Villa dei Papiri, costruita dal suocero di Giulio Cesare, sorge fuori dal sito principale e prende il nome dai rotoli di papiro carbonizzati che furono qui scoperti nel XVIII secolo, cosa che ha indotto a ritenere che l’edifcio fosse una biblioteca. Gli archeologi hanno anche dissotterrato sculture (copie romane di sculture greche) che sono ora esposte, insieme con molti altri oggetti preziosi ritrovati in questo sito, nel magnifco museo archeologico di Napoli. La villa è chiusa dal e diffcilmente verrà riaperta in tempi brevi.
Legno, named after the partially carbonised wooden partition separating the atrium garden from the tablinum (study). Across the Decumano is the entrance to the women’s section of the Central Baths; the men’s section is accessible across the grassy, colonnaded palestra but also has its own entrance on the Cardo III. Look out for the changing rooms with shelves for depositing togas and other belongings, fabulous black and white mosaic pavements (those in the women’s section are particularly well-preserved), the round frigidarium (for cold-water bathing) decorated with paintings of fsh and the adjacent caldarium with its tub for hot water baths. Further up the Cardo IV, just past a bottega, with its amphore-stacked shelves, is the Casa di Nettuno e Anftrite, named after the subjects of the splendid bright blue mosaic in the nymphaeum at the back of the house. Next door, the two-foored Casa del Bel Cortile indeed has a lovely courtyard while in the main room is a glass case containing the skeletons of a year-old boy and a young man and women, all found on the beach. At the top left corner of the site is the imposing Sede degli Augustali, a one-time administrative headquarters dedicated to the Emperor Augustus and housing two vivid wall paintings.
The celebrated Villa dei Papiri, built by Julius Caesar’s father-in-law, lies outside the main site and is named after the , -odd carbonised scrolls of papyrus that were discovered here in the th century leading to conjecture that the building may have been a library. Archaeologists also unearthed sculptures (Roman copies of Greek originals) which are now housed, along with many other of the most precious fnds from this site, in Naples’s superb archaeological museum. The villa has been closed since and is unlikely to open any time soon.

Deus ex machina della manifestazione è ancora una volta Massimo Massaccesi, presidente dello Yacht Club
Capri: insieme al suo nutrito staff ha lavorato a fondo per organizzare un evento che unisce sport, mondanità, turismo e cultura. E la soddisfazione di Massaccesi è genuina, convinta, appassionata. Qual è il lotto di partecipanti all’edizione 2010?
Abbiamo superato i trenta iscritti e sono contento, anche perchè abbiamo conquistato due nuove classi veliche, gli X-4 e le Mylius, che regatano per la prima volta a Capri e che si vanno ad aggiungere a quelle già presenti negli anni scorsi, come Farr4 , MiniMaxi e Comet, che non ci abbandonano mai.
Cosa distingue la tappa caprese dalle altre del circuito della Rolex Cup?
Per Rolex siamo un polo interessante per l’allure internazione dell’isola, che attira armatori ed equipaggi. Raccontando anche di complimenti che ci sono stati fatti, posso dire che piacciono particolarmente gli eventi collaterali, che divertono chi segue la Rolex Cup. La nostra è una formula ormai rodata che si basa su appuntamenti divenuti fssi, dal Rolex Party al Dinner che il nostro Yacht Club offre al ristorante Da Paolino, passando per la presentazione ad Anacapri al Capri Palace e dall’happy hour in banchina. In più ognuno si organizza per trascorrere la serata nei vari localini di Capri e l’isola ormai si attrezza sempre di più per accogliere i regatanti, tanto da anticipare l’apertura dei negozi o degli alberghi. E c’è quel divertimento e quella sana confusione che da sempre caratterizzano eventi come questo.
Uno dei suoi sogni dichiarati è poter dare allo Yacht Club una sede nuova...
La nuova sede è attualmente quella che ci è stata donata da uno dei nostri sponsor, la Ferrarelle. E’ una tensostruttura molto ampia, carina, nel rispetto delle concessioni demaniali; una parte è adibita a segreteria, una a spazio sociale e una a veranda per l’estate.

Sails in the wind from the 5th to the 9th of May in the stretch of water in front of the port of Capri for a new edition of the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, that will see Italian, British, American and German equips sailing also near Faraglioni. Deus ex machina of the event is once again Massimo Massaccesi, president of the Yacht Club Capri: together with his numerous staff he has worked hard in order to organise this event that combines sport, beau monde, tourism and culture.
And the satisfaction of Massaccesi is genuine, convinced and passionate. What is fnal total of participants in the 2010 edition?
We have surpassed thirty registrations and I’m happy, also because we have achieved two new sailing classes, the X-4 and the Mylius, that for the frst time are taking part in the regatta at Capri and will be added to the ones already present in recent years such as Farr4 , MiniMaxi and Comet, that have never abandoned us.
What distinguishes the stage in Capri from the others of the Rolex Cup circuit?
Rolex is interested in us for the international allure of the island that attracts ship owners and ships companies. Recounting also the compliments that we have received, I can say that the collateral events are particularly appreciated, they amuse those who follow the Rolex Cup. Ours is an established formula that is based on meetings that in time have become regular, from the Rolex Party to the Dinner that our Yacht Club offers at the Da Paolino restaurant, the presentation at Capri Palace in Anacapri and the happy hour in the quay. Furthermore everyone organises themselves to pass the evening in the various bars and restaurants in Capri and the island is more and more prepared to give hospitality to the sailors, to the point that the opening of shops and hotels is brought forward. And there is that fun and that healthy chaos that have always characterized events like this.
One of your declared dreams is to be able to give to the Yacht Club a new centre?
The new centre is at the moment the one that was donated to us by one of our sponsors, Ferrarelle. It is a big tensile structure, nice and respects the state concessions; a part of it is used for the administrative offces,

A questo punto quali sono gli obiettivi del prossimo futuro per lo Yacht Club?
Portare Capri sul mare in maniera ancora più intensa e frequente, mentre per la qualità siamo al top a livello di partecipazione. Vogliamo andare avanti per questa strada, moltiplicare le opportunità di ospitare manifestazioni importanti, anche perchè uno degli scopi per il quale è stato creato lo Yacht Club era quello di permettere a Capri di allungare la propria stagione, senza limitarci ai tre mesi estivi. Già una volta, ad ottobre, abbiamo organizzato una campionato mondiale categoria Swan. In sostanza vogliamo riscoprire una Capri nautica con un piano di regate apprezzabile. E’ un pregio che vi viene riconosciuto?
Certo. Abbiamo il pieno sostegno dell’amministrazione comunale, che ci appoggia fortemente e che investe su di noi, avendo riconosciuto che lo Yacht Club Capri porta sull’isola attività che non durano lo spazio di una settimana e poi spariscono.
A livello personale ha mai provato invidia nel visitare gli altri Yacht Club in Italia e all’estero?
Al massimo è un’invidia emulativa, perchè vedo belle realtà dalle quali ho sempre qualcosa da imparare; sono sempre disposto a far tesoro delle esperienze altrui. Sono stato invitato a Porto Cervo, a Saint Tropez, ho visitato club sull’Adriatico e sul Tirreno. In confronto a loro la nostra sede è piccola, ma mi auguro che nel piano regolatore del porto turistico e commerciale di Capri, già esistente, possa trovare presto spazio una club house più grande, che è in progetto e che speriamo di poter costruire nel giro di qualche anno, appena le condizioni politiche ed economiche lo permetteranno.
another part is used as a social area and a veranda for the summer. At this point what are your objectives for the near future of the Yacht Club?
To put ‘Capri on the sea’ in an even more intense and frequent way, for the quality though we are at top level of participation. We want to continue this way, multiply the opportunities of hosting important events, also because one of the reasons why the Yacht Club was created in Capri was in order to prolong its season, without having to limit it to three months in the summer. We have already once organised, in October, a Swan category world championship. In substance we want to rediscover a nautical Capri with an appreciable level of regattas.
Is it a merit that is recognized?
Certainly. We have the strong support of the local administration and they invests on us, having recognised that the Yacht Club Capri doesn’t bring to the island events and activities that only last for a week and then disappear.
On a personal level have you ever felt envious when visiting other Yacht Clubs in Italy and abroad?
At the most an emulating envy, because I see beautiful realities from which I always have something to learn; I am always ready to make the best out of other peoples experiences. I have been invited to Porto Cervo, Saint Tropez, I have visited clubs on the Adriatic sea and on the Tyrrhenian sea. Compared to them our Club is small, but I hope that on the urban development plan of the already existing touristic and commercial port of Capri, there will be space for a bigger club house, it is under project and we hope to build it in the next few years, as soon as the political and economical situation will allow.
