The yearly appointment with men’s fashion returns to Fortezza da Basso from 17 to 20 June. For four days, the Tuscan capital welcomes buyers, press and sector specialists for a packed programme of events. Runway shows, presentations, installations and innovative projects will enliven the exhibition spaces, featuring established and emerging designers from all over the world.

SAN GIOVANNI 24 June

The patron saint of Florence, Saint John the Baptist, is celebrated on 24 June, usually with a traditional procession, the calcio storico final and a fireworks display that lights up the city. Once there was also the Palio dei Cocchi, a horse-drawn carriage race held in Piazza Santa Maria Novella on the eve of the saint’s day.

Born in Florence in the 16th century, Calcio Storico is a combination of football, rugby and wrestling, nowadays played in traditional costume. The four teams from the four historic quarters of the city – the Whites of Santo Spirito, the Blues of Santa Croce, the Reds of Santa Maria Novella and the Greens of San Giovanni – clash in two semi-finals and the grand final. The three matches are played in Piazza Santa Croce, with the final on 24 June coinciding with the celebrations of St John, the patron of Florence.

One of Italy’s best-loved rock festivals is back at Visarno Arena from 12 to 15 June. Headliners include Guns N’ Roses (12 June), Korn (13 June) and Green Day (15 June). Alongside them are artists including Public Enemy, Weezer, Rival Sons, Enter Shikari, Falling in Reverse, Soft Play, The Warning, Dirty Honey, Shame and Bad Nerves, and emerging Italian bands like Atwood, L’Occasione, Punkcake and Revue. An unmissable event for anyone who loves rock in all its varieties.

Teatro del Maggio presents the Italian debut of Caravaggio, starring Roberto Bolle and choreographed by Mauro Bigonzetti.

This mesmerising show narrates the life and art of Michelangelo Merisi in dance form, with all its light and restlessness.

Featuring music by Monteverdi re-orchestrated by Bruno Moretti and stage design

by Carlo Cerri, Caravaggio is scheduled for 9, 10 and 11 May as part of the 2025 Festival del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Hans Werner Henze wrote Der junge Lord in 1964. The opera tells the story of an English nobleman who arrives in a German town with his strange entourage, culminating in the revelation that the young Lord Barrat is a trained ape. Although it has comic aspects, the satirical and often bitter piece explores the hypocrisy of society and the marginalisation of the individual.

TRACEY EMIN. SEX AND SOLITUDE Until July 20 Palazzo Strozzi

The exhibition explores the multifaceted art of Tracey Emin, an artist whose work focused on painting, drawing, video, photography and sculpture. The two words of the title, sex and solitude refer to a theme which is present in most of his work, more than 60 art pieces, and represents different phases of the artist’s career: an intense analysis of the ideas of body and desire, love and sacrifice.

THOMAS J PRICE IN FLORENCE

Until June 11 Museo Novecento, Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria

Famous for his monumental figurative sculptures, Thomas J. Price focuses on the study of the psychology of his characters and the value of the individual, aiming to subvert hierarchies.

The exhibition has been designed for the rooms of Palazzo Vecchio and includes sculptures of various sizes arranged within the museum. The exhibition also features two bronze statues on display in an outdoor area: one in the courtyard of the Museo Novecento and a 3.6-metre-high golden sculpture placed amongst the historic elements of Piazza della Signoria.

A fascinating journey of rediscovery of a couple - he an art historian and she a writer and translator - who were able to gather together a group of artists and intellectuals shaping the world of Italian art in the 1900s and beyond.

The exhibition also includes a silent room where visitors can rest their eyes and mind and let themselves be overwhelmed by the sensations and thoughts stimulated by the 12 rooms where all the artworks are arranged.

MARION BARUCH. UN PASSO AVANTI TANTI DIETRO Until June 8 Museo Novecento

This is the largest exhibition ever arranged by an Italian institution to be dedicated to the great cosmopolitan artist born in Timisoara in 1929. The exhibition focuses on all the various aspects of her art, thanks to the presence of emblematic art pieces of her multifaceted career, starting from the first artworks in the late 1950s to collaborations with well-known designers, from participatory art pieces to fabric art created after 2000.

Florence pays tribute to Giovan Battista Foggini (1652–1725) with a monographic exhibition featuring over 80 works, including sculptures, drawings, and artifacts. The exhibition traces the artist’s career, from his training in Rome to his rise as court sculptor and architect in Florence.

His late Baroque style, influenced by Roman art yet distinctly original, left a lasting mark on the city’s image in the late seventeenth century.

My name is Sara Rocco, I’m 29 years old, and I grew up in Montecatini Terme, a town once renowned for its thermal waters. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by the tourists and the hotels that brought life to my city, which led me to attend a tourism-focused school to nurture my passion for travel and languages. Just two weeks after graduating, I left for Malta to improve my English and gain work experience. I spent one year working as a chef de rang and two years as a receptionist. A

t Tenda Rossa, every dish is a declaration of love for Tuscany.

The Pici Rossi with Cinta Senese are a wonderful example: more than a simple reinterpretation, an act of respect for genuine local food made from slow processes, honest ingredients and living memory. This coarsely-textured and generous pasta is made from a dough to which tomato is added from the start. The resulting bright colour is no aesthetic affectation, but a distinctive characteristic, evoking summertime, home-made preserves and the warmth of farmhouse kitchens. The little-known tradition of ‘dyeing’ pici pasta to make it special and unique to the family is still part of life in the Siena countryside. And

the sauce is worthy of such esteemed origins. Cinta Senese is an ancient and noble breed of pig, raised in forests and fed the natural way. Its meat, flavoured with acorns and freedom, becomes a rich and comforting sauce that envelops the pici in an intensely Tuscan combination. Served

in the heart of Florence, this dish speaks of the hills, the work of livestock farmers and the passion of people who believe the future of food comes from a rediscovery of its roots.

IN THE 13TH CENTURY, TOWER HOUSES WERE ABOUT 160,

lorence and its families: rivalries, alliances, and architecture that

speaks.

An itinerary through medieval towers and the key figures of its past, between war and rebirth. A compact, unassailable wall: that’s how Florence appeared in the early 1200s, with its 150 towers soaring over 70 meters high, tightly packed within the city walls. Space was scarce, stairs were steep, but urban life was a privilege for the elite. This was where business was done, and the profits made the hardships worthwhile.

The tower houses were well equipped, with wells, ovens, and workshops on the ground floor, and kitchens on the top floor to reduce fire risks.

Despite ongoing rivalries between merchants and nobles, often ending in the destruction of opposing

UP TO 213 FT-HIGH! towers, Florence was entering a time of prosperity. Citizens clustered in fortified “islands”, where families and allies lived side by side.

Each group had a shared tower, inaccessible from the street, reachable only via walkways and ladders.

These were refuges in times of unrest.

Such was the Torre dei Consorti (Lungarno Acciaioli 5), which housed up to 18 families. Today, it forms part of the Hotel Continentale. The same fate befell the Torre della Pagliazza (Piazza Santa Elisabetta), the city’s only rounded, Byzantine-style tower, once a women’s prison, now home to the refined Hotel Brunelleschi.

Still standing in its original form is the Torre della Castagna (Piazza San Martino), used by the priors to vote.

The term ballot comes from here, derived from “ballotte”, the boiled chestnuts used for voting. Towering

above is the Torre della Volognona (Via del Proconsolo), later incorporated into the Bargello, Florence’s first public building, whose bell once called citizens to arms and would later ring out the liberation on August 11, 1944.

Some towers survived the war by sheer luck, such as the Torre degli Amidei (Via Por Santa Maria 9), its facade decorated with Etruscan lion heads. A symbol of the Guelf-Ghibelline conflicts, it recalls the tragic tale of Buondelmonte, who broke off his engagement to a Ghibelline Amidei to marry a Donati, sparking a long civil war that ended with the Guelf victory. But even the Guelfs were divided. In Dante’s time, Florence was split between White Guelfs (pro-empire), led by the Cerchi, and Black Guelfs (pro-papacy), led by Corso Donati, whose tower stood between Via del Corso and 35

Donati, accused of treason, was killed while fleeing.

Both he and the Cerchi had fought at Campaldino, alongside Dante himself.

Among the historic families were the Baldovinetti (Borgo Santi Apostoli 4), known for Alesso, master of Ghirlandaio, whose tower features a gothic double-arched doorway.

Less fortunate were the Ghibelline Alberti (Via dei Benci), exiled in 1378. The Compiobbesi (Via dell’Arte della Lana 1), once powerful lords, disappeared in the 1400s. Their tower became home to the Arte della Lana guild.

The Gianfigliazzi (Piazza Santa Trinita), after a fall from grace in the late 1300s, regained power in the 1400s.

pitals, Dante condemned them as usurers. A unique case is that of the Mannelli (Via dei Bardi 84r), who refused Vasari permission to cut through their tower for his Vasari Corridor.

Forced to build around it, Vasari created a narrow choke point, later used as a defensive measureto block armed attackers.

Less lucky were the Ubriachi (Via Guicciardini), whose tower was absorbed into the Corridor.

Traces of them remain in Santa Maria Novella.

But it is in Borgo San Jacopo that the most characteristic towers remain, built along the Arno and spared from wartime destruction.

Here stands the tower of poet Cecco Angiolieri (number 30), the Marsili tower (17), and above all, the Torre dei Belfredelli (number 9), cloaked in ivy, offering a romantic view over the river.

ntil 20 July at Palazzo Strozzi for one of the most influential British artists of the contemporary scene: Tracey Emin. Sex and Solitude. Born in 1963 in Croydon, London, Emin grew up in the seaside town of Margate. In the course of her career she has developed an artistic practice that ranges from drawing and painting to tapestry, embroidery, film, bronze sculpture and neon installations. The artist takes inspiration from her own life, referencing some deeply intimate experiences, from her sexual history to the abuse she suffered, from abortion to relationships and, more recently, cancer and health challenges. In 1999 she attracted intense media attention as a candidate for the Turner Prize when she exhibited My Bed at the Tate Gallery in London. Produced the

in 2011 she was appointed a professor of drawing at the Royal Academy, one of the first two women professors in the institution’s history.

The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi explores Emin’s multifaceted artistic practice by means of a sequence that examines various moments in her career, from the nineties to the present day, in an intensely personal and collective journey through desire and the body. The show’s title references two key words, sex and solitude, which permeate the more than 60 works on display, many of which are seen in Italy for the first time. These include the monumental bronze sculpture I Followed You To The End (2024), displayed in dialogue with the Renaissance courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi, and the original installation Exorcism of the Last Painting I Ever Made (1996), reconstructed in one of the 45

Let’s begin with the title of the exhibition, Sex and Solitude. How has your view of sex changed over the years, and how does it continue to influence your work?

Sex has always been a complicated terrain for me. At fourteen or fifteen, it was a way of moving through the world, seeing and feeling others intensely. Later, re-

alising I gave far more than I received, I chose celibacy.

Across my life, long spells of abstinence followed, the longest lasting ten years.

Now, after surgeries and countless scars—of love, sex, rape, illness, and loss—my body feels numb, as if memory itself has settled into the flesh. These days, love matters more than sex, and finding both together feels almost impossibly rare.

Palazzo Strozzi is a place that’s steeped in history.

How does holding an exhibition in such a place influence your way of seeing your own work? What impact has our country had

on you in artistic and personal terms?

Palazzo Strozzi is magnificent architecturally and historically, its location, the layout of the rooms, everything. It suits me perfectly, it’s wonderful. And Florence itself: it’s incredible!

A city so deeply immersed in the history of art, in history full stop. For a long time I’ve had a rule: I avoid exhibitions in architectural settings that don’t make me feel good. My priority is to show my work in cities and countries I feel in tune with. And for me, Palazzo Strozzi has it all. I’m really excited.

amous for his large-scale figurative sculptures, Thomas J Price turns our idea of the ordinary upside down. The exhibition, in Florence until September 14, designed for the halls of Palazzo Vecchio features sculptural works of varying scales set within the civic museum’s permanent collection. The focus of the exhibition are the two outdoor bronzes, one in the courtyard of the Museo Novecento and a 3.6-meter-high gilded sculpture that dialogues with historical works in Piazza della Signoria.

Let’s start from the end: what does it mean to you to be in Piazza della Signoria?

To me it is a very interesting moment, because I grew up with these sculptures in my eyes and mind.

In addition to my personal feeling, Piazza Signoria’s historical and cultural meaning is very important. As an artist, I’m interested in questioning our society’s basic values, the way we look at the world through the lens of culture.

But what I’m really interested in is its meaning, watching the impact it will have on the people looking at it, asking questions about the world around us..

Who are the ordinary people, the subjects of your works? They are never on a pedestal… is it right?

The starting point is always an emotional point of view: the work is an emotional sculpture, the subjects of my works are fictional characters.

Therefore, the sculpture represents a very personal starting point. I hope, however, that I depict people to whom we feel connected, with whom we are acquainted. Sometimes, I’m amazed at the way people look at my sculptures: they strike a pose that reflects the statue’s and imitate it.

This happens because my sculptures represent what 54

we are: common people, not heroes, not conquerors or mythical creatures.

These sculptures represent us and seeing ourselves represented this way, on an enormous scale, should help us realize the power

How important is aesthetics in your works? And by aesthetics I mean clothes,

hair…what do they represent?

It varies from person to person.

People easily recognize details, which are important to communicate and if there is a detail that attracts your attention it means that there is a connection, that you understand that history, that culture, that person; on the contrary, if you do not catch the details, it means that you cannot relate to that story, and a lot of people cannot relate to a lot of stories because they have never been or felt included.

Details are important because these fictional characters want to be valued as people, want to attract attention, and I love my characters because they are special. I hope that my statues will provide the characters I represent with the appreciation they deserve.

wonderful score written for two hands: if we wanted to describe the life together of Anna Banti, pseudonym of Lucia Lopresti and Roberto Longhi without using words, it would be a harmonious and gracious music piece. It could not be otherwise for two persons who spent their life immersed in art. Villa Bardini celebrates them in the 12 sections of the inspiring exhibition Caravaggio and the Twentieth Century. and Claudio Paolini. The story of an extraordinary life along with their shared interests, animated by the visits of the greatest Italian artists and intellectuals of the 20th century, discoveries, emotions, and passions.

The spotlight is on Roberto Longhi and Anna Banti.

Like-minded partners, but equally independent. They both knew how to hold a conversation with their peers, but they were also gifted with the talent and the will to involve, interest, and stimulate the youth and a broad audience, at times resorting to unusual means such as cinema. Their story

is recounted with preciseness and lightness in an experiential exhibition where viewers can admire masterpieces such as Boy Bitten by a Lizard by Caravaggio, Apostles by Jusepe de Ribera, and the exciting series of ten paintings by Morandi, the Bolognese artist. In addition, the exhibition includes more than 40 paintings as well as drawings and watercolours, an important collection of original photographs and archival documents which show the couple’s connection with Ungaretti, Bassani, Pratolini, Gadda, Pea, Bigongiari, and Pasolini, among many 57

BY THE VISITS OF THE GREATEST ITALIAN ARTISTS AND INTELLECTUALS OF THE 20TH CENTURY literary friends and writers, and De Pisis, Socrates, Guttuso, Mafai, and the aforementioned Morandi, among many artists. Starting from their own personal efforts, together they managed to transform the perception of the 17th century, a century normally neglected in the history of art into a magical period for its creativity and intensity.

She, by rediscovering the story of Artemisia, and he by staging Caravaggio. The first section of the exhibition introduces the couple through various paintings and photographs. It continues with a section ded58

icated to Roberto Longhi’s own collection with Caravaggio’s artwork and other paintings by the artist. The next sections are dedicated to the relationship between Longhi and cinema, and his activities as a teacher. Another section recounts the experience of Anna Banti as an art historian, writer and translator, enhanced by a selection of the many drawings that Roberto Longhi himself dedicated to her and a series of photographs showing her in the rooms of the villa Il Tasso. A room is entirely dedicated to their relationship with Giorgio Morandi, a very close friend

of Longhi’s in the years spent in Bologna. Finally, the exhibition describes the relationships with the Longhis during the summers through artworks which had an impact on them such as the paintings

by Carrà, included in the collection focusing on the sea or the family portraits painted by Leonetta Cecchi Pieraccini. The exhibition also includes a silent room where visitors can let their eyes and mind rest and be overwhelmed by the sensations and thoughts stimulated by the 12 rooms where all the artworks are laid out.

n his second term as president and CEO of Firenze Fiera, Lorenzo Becattini heads the company that manages Florence’s congress and exhibition infrastructure, catering for the conference sector, indirect events like Pitti Immagine, and directly-run events including the MIDA Interna-

tional Crafts Fair and Didacta Italia, which impact strategic sectors, crafts and innovation in education, in which the Florentine exhibition district plays an essential role at national and international level.

Firenze Fiera is unique in the world exhibition panorama. What makes Flor-

ence’s trade fair and conference district so special?

The fact that it’s located in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw from Santa Maria Novella station and with tram links to the airport in just twenty minutes. But that’s not all: our spaces are not only functional, they’re also elegant and steeped in history. We have Fortezza da Basso, built in 1534, Villa Vittoria, a late nineteenth-century gem, and the modern Palazzo degli Affari. Firenze Fiera is about logistics, but it’s also about beauty, style and centrality.

Anyone who takes part in an event here also gets to enjoy the city in all its glory.

In recent years Firenze Fiera has focused on the redevelopment of its existing spaces. What are the most important innovations?

We’ve completely refurbished Palazzo degli Affari, which was completed in 2022, prioritising sustainability and energy efficiency. But the most radical change is at Fortezza da Basso: we’re upgrading the external walkways and those below the walls, as well as opening up new spaces for local citizens to enjoy. Moreover, construction is underway on the new Bellavista pavilion, parallel with the Opificio delle pietre dure. It should be ready by the end 61

'WE ARE ALREADY THINKING ABOUT THE 90TH EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL HANDICRAFTS EXHIBITION (MIDA), WHICH WILL BE HELD IN 2026' of next year, and it will be a multi-purpose building with events spaces on the ground floor and offices on the upper floors. By 2026 we’re also aiming to complete the refurbishment of the Cavaniglia pavilion and other strategic interventions.

Looking at the calendar of events, what do you recommend not missing on an upcoming visit to Florence?

We’re working on the first edition of Castanea, scheduled for December; it’s an event dedicated to the world of the chestnut and is derivatives, not just food products but also cosmetics. It’s an ambitious project that showcas62

es a supply chain that’s crucial in many Italian regions, including Tuscany.

Any new exhibitions coming up?

We’re already thinking about the 90th edition of the Florence International Crafts Fair (MIDA), which will take place in 2026: a major milestone, as the event was launched in Florence in 1931.

We’re planning to give it an even more international flavour, to promote Italian artisan talent all over the world.

We’re also opening a new section devoted to food and restaurants, something that’s inextricably linked with the city’s identity.

One last question: how important is the advice of concierges in conveying the value of exhibitions and the city itself?

Incredibly important. Hotel concierges are the best ambassadors for the city: they can recommend a good trattoria, an artisan boutique or an unmissable event. And that’s why we at Firenze Fiera believe it’s important to establish direct relations with them.

Offering authentic, high-quality experiences enriches the visitor’s stay and, at the same time, valorises Florence’s urban and cultural fabric.

he Negroni is undoubtedly one of the world’s most iconic and beloved cocktails, but its origins are shrouded in an aura of legendary simplicity and taste that’s quintessentially Italian. The birth of the Negroni is linked to a prominent Florentine nobleman, Count Camillo Negroni. The story goes that in 1919 the count, a man of sophisticated tastes and a lover of good food and drink, was a regular patron of Caffè Casoni, a classic Florence bar much loved by the intellectuals and aristocracy of the age.

THE ORIGINAL RECIPE OF NEGRONI, A VARIANT OF THE AMERICANO, REQUIRES THREE SIMPLE BUT PERFECTLY BALANCED INGREDIENTS: GIN, RED VERMOUTH AND CAMPARI

One day, wanting a more intense drink than his usual Americano – a cocktail of red vermouth, soda and bitters –, Camillo asked barman Fosco Scarselli to replace the soda with a splash of gin. This small but momentous change resulted in a stronger drink with unmistakable character, which the count became very fond of. Initially a variant of the Americano, the Negroni quickly grew in popularity, and very soon the count’s name, Negroni, was associated with it. The original recipe requires three simple but perfectly balanced ingredients: gin, 73

THE BIRTH OF THE NEGRONI IS LINKED TO A FLORENTINE NOBLEMAN, COUNT CAMILLO NEGRONI red vermouth and Campari. Each element has a specific function: the gin provides robustness and alcohol, the vermouth lends sweetness and smooth flavour, and the Campari adds the distinctive bitterness that makes the Negroni unmistakable. The cocktail is served with ice in a tumbler, garnished with a slice of orange. The idea of combining these three ingredients was not only a matter of flavour, but also the practicalities of the period: gin was extremely popular in England and all over Europe in the early 20th century, while red ver74

mouth and Campari were already known and loved in Italy. The combination of the three was a success and the cocktail became a must, not only for customers of Caffè Casoni, but also in other bars in Florence and beyond. Over the years, the Negroni has won the hearts of countless connoisseurs and become an international classic.

Its extraordinary success is due not only to its delicious flavour, but also its ability to persist unaltered, yet open to different trends and periods. If you’re in Florence and feel like sampling an authentic Ne-

groni, you could visit the place where it all began, the former Caffè Casoni, today’s Caffè Giacosa. Classically elegant Caffè Gilli and Manifattura in Piazza San Pancrazio both serve an excellent classic Negroni. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296 and it is the world’s third largest church after St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Paul’s in London. PONTE VECCHIO

LOGGIA DEL PORCELLINO 40

Loggia del Porcellino is the common name for Florence’s Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, so called to distinguish it from the Mercato Vecchio, which was located in the area of today’s Piazza della Repubblica. The Loggia’s focal point has been, since 1640, the Fontana del Porcellino ( the piglet fountain), actually a replica of the seventeenth-century bronze wild boar by Pietro Tacca currently showcased at the Stefano Bardini Museum.

The square’s current design dates back to the 13th century and it was paved in the late 14th century. It has always been the symbol of the city’s civil power. Its most iconic building is Palazzo Vecchio, with a replica of Michelangelo’s David at the entrance and next to the Loggia dei Lanzi.

In the middle of the piazza is the Fountain of Neptune, also known as the Biancone, with its central statue designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati.
