CONNECTIONS
Cinema is a bridge, a window onto distant landscapes in both time and space – this is how it brings the world together. And such is the case between Italian and Emirati cinema, as exemplifed by our cover star for this issue, Nayla Al Khaja, the frst female director and producer from the United Arab Emirates. Recognised in Italy ten years ago at the Middle East Now Festival in Florence, she shares insights in our interview about her career, future projects, and her beloved Dubai, captured through a sequence of frames that crystallise her favourite places.
With her, we also explore what she admires about Italian cinema, which is now drawing even closer to Emirati culture thanks to La Dolce Via Festival, an initiative conceived by Benedetta Paravia to support young talents from the UAE. And how could we not think of La Dolce Vita, that golden era when 1950s and 1960s Rome became the beating heart of international cinema, crafting the myth of Italian elegance – defned by refned fashion, grand cafés, luxurious cars, and yachts that seamlessly blend aesthetics and innovation. Yachts like those showcased at the Dubai International Boat Show, where we discover Italian excellence and set sail for the Arabian Gulf, unveiling its most exclusive beach clubs and luxury hotels, helping you fnd the perfect one for your stay. Among them, familyfriendly resorts abound, offering a world of attractions designed for the little ones
Yet Dubai is also a hub of culture, as shown by Majed Al Mansoori, Executive Director of the Museum of the Future, our esteemed guide through the museum’s halls and the city’s streets. This spring, Dubai also hosts a new edition of Art Dubai, the Middle East’s most important international art fair, reaffrming once again that Dubai is far more than just luxury and entertainment.

DUBAI TO ME IS: DYNAMISM, OPPORTUNITIES AND A LIFE ALWAYS ON THE GO. IT IS THE PLACE WHERE YOU NEVER GET BORED
NEVER STOP
JORGE LORENZO, THE FIVE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION MOTORCYCLE DRIVER WHO CHOSE DUBAI TO GO ON ‘RACING’ text Martina Olivieri
When did you realize you were passionate about motorcycles?
At the age of , when my father, a passionate amateur racer, built my frst motorcycle and I took part in a race for the frst time. At years old, I was already a professional driver. What have you learned by growing up in this world?
I learned what commitment, discipline and sacrifce mean. Every step of the way has been a challenge, but also an opportunity to improve and get where I am today.
The most important moment of your career?
There are two moments: my frst win at the World Championship, in Brazil in , when I was barely years old, and my frst MotoGP title, in Malaysia in . Two goals which made me aware that I was able to race at the highest level. And, in fact, among the many ‘crazy’ things I’ve done in my life is also winning World Championships, including MotoGPs!
What would you have done, had you not become a racer?
I’m a creative person, I would have probably chosen a design or art-related job: painter, illustrator or something allowing me to express myself visually. Like I did with my historic number , with the halo and devil’s tail, which I personally designed because it best represents me: on one side, I love tranquility, but on the other I am adrenalinecharged.
What made you choose Dubai as the place to live when you stopped racing?
For racers, not racing anymore means fnding something that keeps them active, mentally and physically. Dubai is exactly this to me: dynamism, opportunities and a life always on the go. The sun shines nearly every day, the services offered are of the highest standard, and the city is impeccably clean and effcient, something rare. It is the perfect place for networking and the place where you never get bored.
How much do you identify with Dubai?
I love Dubai’s way of thinking. They had an ambitious goalcreating one of the world’s best cities in many ways- and they achieved it. This is something I can relate to.
The must-try experience in Dubai?
Exploring the desert on an off-road motorcycle. It was an experience that brought me back in time.

ITALY’S UNIQUENESS IN THE DESIGN INDUSTRY LIES IN ITS ABILITY TO INNOVATE WITHOUT LOSING ITS CULTURAL IDENTITY
AN ECCELLENT JOURNEY
ALESSANDRO PULINA, FOUNDER OF PULINA EXCLUSIVE INTERIORS, SPECIALISING IN LUXURY YACHT INTERIOR DESIGN
As an architect, when did your love for the nautical world begin?
During my studies in Florence, I had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned designers in the yachting industry. It was love at frst sight.
After a long collaboration with Benetti, you established your own studio in Pisa, Pulina Exclusive Interiors. What are your current goals?
With ten years of experience behind us, we aim to expand globally while maintaining the artisanal excellence that sets us apart. With offces in Shanghai and Dubai, we are embracing an increasingly international luxury landscape, yet we remain a boutique design studio where each project is unique and crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
What is your vision for contemporary yacht design?
Technological innovation and sustainability are the cornerstones of my approach. The goal is to create functional and welcoming spaces, designed for extended stays on board, striking the perfect balance between home-like comfort and cutting-edge nautical design.
What makes Italian craftsmanship so valued in this sector?
The attention to detail, the artisanal expertise, and the use of the fnest materials. Italy has mastered the balance between aesthetics and functionality, constantly innovating while staying true to its cultural identity. This is what makes our design unique and appreciated worldwide.
What does true luxury in contemporary yachting mean to you?
It is the seamless fusion of man and environment, nature and technology. Luxury is no longer about ostentation but about living in a space that refects one’s personality, enriched with exclusive materials and innovative solutions. Today, luxury means comfort, intimacy, and an obsessive attention to detail.
Which future project are you most enthusiastic about?
We are currently researching sustainable yet precious materials in collaboration with top Italian companies and universities. Our aim is to create projects that combine luxury with sustainability, contributing to the preservation of our planet. From an architectural perspective, which buildings or areas in Dubai do you find most captivating?
Dubai fascinates me for its ability to blend futurism with tradition. Artifcial islands like Palm Jumeirah embody innovation, while the preservation of cultural heritage proves that growth can be achieved without losing sight of one’s history.

FOUNDER AND LONGTIME
GENERAL OF THE ITALIAN
& COMMERCE OFFICE IN THE UAE
You served as Secretary General of the IICUAE for 21 years, which you co-founded in 2004 together with Piero Ricotti, who served as President twice. What were the key milestones in this long-standing commitment?
To sum up briefy: the launch of projects promoting Italian businesses in Dubai between and ; the opening of showrooms in Sharjah for Italian companies between and ; the establishment of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in , which was offcially recognised in ; the relocation of its headquarters from Sharjah to Dubai and, in , the opening of a second offce in Abu Dhabi. The achievements you look back on with the greatest pride?
Without a doubt, the Chamber’s offcial recognition by the Ministry in and my formal appointment in . Fastforwarding a few years, I would say the last four years of the Chamber have been the most successful in terms of promotional activities and fnancial performance, positioning it among the top three Italian Chambers of Commerce abroad, out of operating internationally. So, would you say that your resignation last December came at the peak of the Chamber’s - and your own - recognition?
It was a carefully considered decision, taken in full harmony with the Chamber’s leadership, to our mutual satisfaction. I believe that stepping down at the height of success is an act of great humility, but also a sign of strategic foresight
What are the main reasons why an Italian company should establish a presence in the UAE today?
Italy is internationally renowned for its excellence. The key difference between most foreign markets and the UAE lies in the country’s high spending power, which allows Made in Italy products to be truly valued. To stand out in such a dynamic and ever-evolving environment, it is essential to gain in-depth knowledge of the local market, invest in quality and innovation, and provide local operators with impeccable service.
A day in Dubai - where would you take us?
In the morning, a visit to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, and the Museum of the Future. In the afternoon, the Deira souks, a dhow cruise along the Creek, and dinner at one of the luxury restaurants on Jumeirah Beach. To round off the evening, one could opt for a show at Dubai Opera, waterfront strolls along the Marina, or a night out at one of the city’s trendiest nightclubs.
AESTHETICS AND PASSION
DIEGO M: THE FAMILY BEHIND THE BRAND text Francesca Lombardi
DIEGO M was founded in as the personal and professional partnership of Diego Mazzi and his wife Manuela Bortolameolli. Alluring, determined and discreet, the woman behind the M makes up half of the soul of an outerwear brand that speaks of understated style and originality.
@DIEGOM.OFFICIAL
MADE IN ITALY IS A QUESTION OF DNA: ELEGANCE AND AESTHETIC SOPHISTICATION ARE PART OF OUR VOCABULARY
Behind the brand there’s a real family story. How did the idea of working together come about?
It was one of those generational shifts that are part of the story of so many Italian companies. My husband left the family business to set up his own brand, and he asked me to work with him. I’m from South Tyrol, and my family has always had a sustainable approach to work and production. I was working with them, but I didn’t think twice about joining Diego and contributing my knowhow.
These days our two sons work in the company, each in his own area of expertise. Our daughter, the youngest, is an actor.
So it’s M for Manuela?
Yes, but also for moda (fashion), music, Milano... all my husband’s favourite things.
How do you create your collections? What are your roles?
I look after the commercial side of things; Diego is the creative one, he chooses fabrics, materials and details, and designs the garments. Naturally, we brainstorm ideas, especially when it comes to women: I know the markets, and he created the DIEGO M style. We work as a team.
What makes your garments special?
Their fabrics, their details, but also their versatility. These are pieces for the men and women of today, whose lives are busy and fast-paced. But they also need to be impeccably elegant at all times.
The Men’s and Women’s collections are very different in mood; is that a reflection of your personalities?
The DIEGO M menswear collection is the other half of the brand: on the one hand, rigour and minimalism, on the other, imagination and elegance. Both share a close focus on materials and details.
What does Made in Italy mean to you?
It’s a question of DNA: we know the fabrics, and elegance and aesthetic sophistication are part of our vocabulary. It comes naturally to us, but beautiful things well made are valued and respected all over the world.

Born and raised in Dubai Nayla Al Khaja made history by becoming the first Emirati woman to direct and to produce films
BREAKING BARRIERS
A trailblazer in the Emirati flm industry and a visionary storyteller, Nayla Al Khaja has carved her own path on both the national and international scene. As the UAE’s frst female flm director and producer, her journey is a testament to the power of cinema to challenge conventions.
Nayla’s career is a story worth telling. Born and raised in Dubai, Nayla made history by becoming the frst Emirati woman to direct a television commercial. But this was only the beginning. Subsequently, she released Arabana, a short flm that boldly addressed the issue of child abuse.
Nayla has remained committed to telling thought-provoking stories, as she did in Malal, which explores the struggles faced by young Emirati couples in arranged marriages.
Can you tell us about your journey in the flm industry? What motivated you to pursue a career in flmmaking?
NAYLA AL KHAJA’S JOURNEY REDEFINED WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A FILMMAKER IN THE ARAB WORLD. AS SHE CONTINUES TO BREAK BARRIERS, HER LEGACY IS ALREADY SHAPING THE FUTURE OF FILMMAKING
Nayla soon became the frst Emirati to receive recognition at the Producers Network at the Cannes Film Festival for her feature script Animal
In , she debuted with Three, a drama-thriller that explores themes of grief and cultural beliefs.
Nayla Al Khaja’s journey redefned what it means to be a flmmaker in the Arab world. As she continues to break barriers, her legacy is already shaping the future of flmmaking.
My journey into flmmaking was driven by an innate passion for storytelling and a desire to bring authentic Emirati narratives to the global stage. Growing up, I was fascinated by cinema, but flmmaking wasn’t seen as a traditional career path, especially for women in the UAE. That challenge only fueled my determination to carve a space in the industry. I started by creating short flms, pushing boundaries, and learning every aspect of the craft. Over time, I built my own path, proving that Emirati voices have a place in international cinema. My flms often explore complex human emotions, cultural identity, and untold stories, blending striking visuals with deeply personal narratives. My goal has always been to bridge worlds, telling stories that feel intimate yet resonate universally. What upcoming projects are you currently working on? Are there any specifc themes or stories you are excited to explore?
I am currently working on BAAB, a feature flm that blends fantasy, horror, and psychological depth, set within the rich tapestry of Emirati culture. It is an ambitious project, and working with A.R. Rahman on the

flm’s score has been an incredible collaboration. The flm explores themes of loss, resilience, and the blurred lines between reality and folklore. Are you familiar with Italian cinema? If so, what aspects do you appreciate the most about it? Do you have any favorite Italian flms or directors?
Italian cinema is a masterclass in visual storytelling and emotional depth, blending realism with poetic narratives that capture life’s struggles with raw authenticity, as seen in Bicycle Thieves ( 9 8) by Vittorio De Sica. Directors like Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita, 8½) introduced surrealism and introspection, while Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) explored nostalgia and memory. Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty) continues this tradition with visually stunning, thought-provoking flms. You attended the Middle East Now Festival in Florence in 2015, where you won an award for your short flm The Neighbour. Can you share your memories of that event and what winning that award meant to you?

energy, and to have my flm recognized in a city so steeped in cinematic and cultural history was surreal. The festival was also a fantastic platform for cross-cultural dialogue, allowing me to connect with flmmakers and audiences who were genuinely interested in exploring the Middle East beyond the usual narratives. That experience reinforced my belief in the power of flm as a bridge between cultures, and it motivated me to keep pushing boundaries in Emirati cinema. How do you think cultural exchange through flm can impact understanding between different communities?

Attending the Middle East Now Festival in Florence in was a memorable milestone in my career. Winning for The Neighbour was particularly meaningful because it reaffrmed that Emirati stories could resonate with international audiences. Florence itself has an incredible artistic
Film is one of the most powerful tools for cultural exchange because it allows audiences to experience different perspectives, traditions, and ways of life in an intimate and immersive way. When done authentically, cinema breaks stereotypes and fosters empathy, allowing people to connect beyond language or geography. For me, showcasing Emirati culture through flm is not just about representation, it’s about creating a bridge between our world and the rest of the globe. By telling deeply personal yet universally resonant stories, we can foster greater appreciation for cultures that might otherwise be unfamiliar. Film has the power to humanize, educate, and build emotional connections, making it an essential medium for cross-cultural understanding.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations in the flm industry, and how have they influenced your work? I have always been inspired by visionary flmmakers who push the boundaries of storytelling while staying true to their cultural roots. Directors like Guillermo del Toro and Park Chan-wook have influenced my approach to blending fantasy, horror, and psychological depth in my flms. Del Toro’s ability to create visually stunning yet deeply emotional narratives aligns with my vision, especially in BAAB. I also admire Asghar Farhadi, whose flms are intimate yet layered with social complexity, proving that personal stories can be incredibly powerful. His subtle storytelling, attention to cultural nuances, and exploration of human emotions have influenced how I shape my characters and narratives. From the region, Masoud Amralla Al Ali, a key fgure in Emirati cinema, has been instrumental in championing Arab storytelling and has had a direct impact on my career. What message do you hope to convey through your flms, and how do you think cinema can be a powerful tool for change?

Cinema is one of the most influential tools for change, it has the ability to start conversations, reshape narratives, and inspire action. It challenges societal norms, amplifes underrepresented voices, and fosters dialogue across cultures. For me, flm isn’t just entertainment, it’s a catalyst for change, a medium that allows us to dream, question, and understand one another on a deeper level. I want my work to leave an impact, whether by sparking new conversations, breaking barriers, or simply making people feel seen.

CINEMA, BONDS AND WONDERS
text Teresa Favi
Italian cinema has always been one of the pillars of worldwide cinematic culture, an artistic language capable of describing reality in a deep and poetic way. From the Neorealism revolution, which in the second postwar period transformed everyday life into a universal narrative, to the Dolce Vita’s splendour when Rome became the heart of the international film industry with the Cinecittà studios, Italy has been constantly influencing the global filmmaking scene. In the 1950s and ‘60s, film directors such as Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Luchino Visconti elevated Italian cinema to a form of art recognized and celebrated everywhere, with masterworks which are still a source of inspiration for film directors all over the world. The Italian film d’auteur genre, however, has never stopped proliferating: from the movies by Paolo Sorrentino, Matteo Garrone and Alice Rohrwacher to the new generation of film directors who carry on the legacy of a very lively film industry, capable of innovating while remaining faithful to its roots. This is the backdrop to La Dolce Via Festival, an event planned by Benedetta Paravia, a personality recognized for her commitment to international cultural promotion, to whom the Emirati Government has granted the status of Golden citizen for her pioneering talent. The Festival – which aims to support young talented Emirati people by bringing them closer to the culture of Italian cinema and promoting the creation of a cinematic hub in the United Arab Emirates – will

The event will be held with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture and Secondary Education of the United Arab Emirates, with the sponsorship of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. It was introduced within the setting of the Vespucci World Tour and Villaggio Italia, owing to the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the Ministry of Defense and of the Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. “This festival is going to be a tool of cultural diplomacy, which adds to the initiatives of our Embassy, besides allowing young Emirati students learn about the Italian contemporary filmmaking scene, thus, strengthening international dialogue and our country’s prestige across the world”, Benedetta Paravia said. And so, with the La Dolce Via Festival, Italian cinema opens up to new horizons, building a bridge between tradition and innovation, between the Dolce Vita’s glorious past and the future of an increasingly international and interconnected filmmaking industry.

In Downtown Dubai district are hosting the offices of the world’s largest companies, famous attractions and locations with lots of entertainment. The dizzying skyscrapers here successfully coexist with ta lot of shopping centers. Restaurants and hotels add modernity to the area. And the sun and picturesque boulevards create an atmosphere of happiness and harmony
It’s . pm on a warm winter evening, and a huge crowd is looking in the same direction. All is set for one of the greatest world spectacles. Colored projectors begin shooting water meters into the air, accompanied by a range of classical, contemporary Arabic, and world music, with , lights following its rhythm. Even for those living in Dubai, watching the Fountains’ show always feels like the frst time: captivating, magnetic, and emotional. You never get tired of it. Just a few steps away from Burj Lake, overlooking the choreographed performance, stands his majesty: the Burj Khalifa, towering over the fountains and dominating the scene. Dizzily tall and slender, bold emblem of Dubai’s rise onto the global stage. Its spires toward the sky showcase the Emirate’s journey to the top embodying the leadership’s visionary push. Ultimately, its fower-shaped structure welcomes and opens the door to new residents and investors. But to make the area of Downtown a treasure chest, it is not just the beauty of the Fountains or the height of Burj Khalifa. This neighborhood is also home to the Dubai Opera. Local architectural elements are subtly blended within an ultra-modern neighborhood. Here, the Mashrabiya, the typical Arabic pierced screens used to flter light, and the skyscrapers’ windows follow one another. Therefore, to truly savor the essence of the district and relive the ancient splendors of Arabia, do not miss a stroll through Souk Al Bahar, the ‘sailor’s market,’ a vibrant marketplace offering captivating shopping, entertainment, and dining experiences. This nod to the past is separated from modernity by a small bridge. In intriguing contrast to the arabesque architecture reproduction, stands the famous Dubai Mall. The shopping giant is not just a mall but a destination. A city in the city. The embodiment of luxury and entertainment. It dazzles with its variety of stores, and surely, you can’t say you’ve truly been to Dubai if you haven’t gotten lost inside it at least once! Innovative design, speed and sportiness, elements in the DNA of Tecnomar motor yachts, make of this an exceptional catamaran. Weight control was a major factor in the engineering design, especially considering the large amount of glass used in the project. A slight change in displacement could have had a signifcant impact on drag, trim and speed. The complex curved shape of the aluminium superstructure pushed the performance of the precious material to its limits.

PEOPLE, KNOWLEDGE AND INNOVATION
Corporate Academies are becoming a key asset for companies committed to innovation and the enhancement of human capital. Franchi Umberto Marmi – Italy’s leading company in the marble district of Carrara, Tuscany (the very same marble that Michelangelo, the great Renaissance sculptor, used over fve centuries ago) and a producer of high-end marble furnishings – has chosen to invest in education with its own Academy. This project was created to share knowledge, values, and growth strategies, offering both a physical and virtual space where ideas, skills, and professional relationships can fourish. In its frst two years, FUM Academy has strengthened the company’s wealth of expertise and craftsmanship, fostering a sense of belonging and expanding its network of collaborations. Along this journey, it has found a prestigious partner in YACademy, a postgraduate training institution that connects young talents with leading companies and key fgures in contemporary architecture. This synergy led to the launch of the Architettura per il Paesaggio (Architecture for Landscape) course in autumn 2023, organised with the support of FUM and led by Patrick Lüth, director of Snøhetta Austria. The programme provided participants with an immersive experience in the Carrara marble quarries and at FUM’s headquarters in nearby Avenza. The training programme, set within the world of FUM and in close contact with the marble itself, evolved into a genuine incubator of ideas, fostering constant exchange between the company’s in-house experts, YACademy, students, and their tutor, Patrick Lüth. He shared

Snøhetta’s vision of Carrara marble – a material frequently featured in their most ambitious projects – within a framework of responsible architecture that increasingly prioritises human needs and well-being. The young architects, hailing from different countries, were challenged to develop a project focused on the restoration and repurposing of the Cava dei Ponti di Vara, a site rich in history and cultural identity. Their work followed a site-specifc approach, delivering creative yet contextually respectful solutions that highlighted the unique characteristics of Carrara marble. The success of the initiative confrmed the effectiveness of the initial vision: to refne and develop ideas through a project-based methodology tailored to the local context. After the experience of the 2023 studio, the synergy between FUM and YACademy returns with an all-new postgraduate course in ‘Spiritual Architecture’. The master’s course aims to enhance the experience of sacred architecture in different cultures and religions and to train designers with the vision and technical skills essential to design places that, besides being functional, give spiritual and psychological wellbeing. Stone and marble will obviously be the focus of refection. The students will be admitted after being selected by a committee composed of architects from some of the world’s most important frms: these include Michele de Lucchi of AMDL Circle, Patrick Luth of Snohetta, Giuseppe Zampieri of David Chipperfeld Architects Milano, Giancarlo Mazzanti of El Equipo Mazzanti and Francesca Singer of SANAA.

A PLACE FOR EXCHANGE AND DISCOVERY
ART DUBAI 2025, INCREASINGLY A PLATFORM FOR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIMENTATION
text Francesca Lombardi
Art Dubai takes place at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai from 8 to April 5 (with previews on 6 and 7 April). Art Dubai’s Contemporary, Bawwaba, Modern and Digital sections present over a hundred exhibitors with galleries in more than 5 cities around the world, with over frst-time attendees featured in this year’s edition. The geographical breadth of galleries and artists is fundamental to Art Dubai’s role as a gateway to discovery, learning and exchange, and its ongoing commitment to present art and artists from less represented areas of the world. The 5 edition of the art fair will continue its strong focus on the Middle East, the African continent, and western and southern Asia. The continuous expansion and development of Dubai’s cultural scene and the city’s status as the fnancial and trade capital of the Gulf region are also refected in the number of Dubai-based galleries (over ) and the growing number of Emirati artists taking part in the event. Art Dubai is committed to creating a dialogue between untold regional stories and global art movements, and every year international academics and art historians are invited to curate specifc sections of the fair. The guest curators for 5 are Mirjam Varadinis (Bawwaba - meaning door in Arabic); Magalí Arriola and Nada Shabout (Art Dubai Modern); and Gonzalo Herrero Delicado (Art Dubai Digital).
Our 5 galleries encapsulate this energy, the dynamism of the art scene and the rich mixture of communities that call Dubai their home. The programme demonstrates a growing interest in the region’s art scene, while also remaining loyal to Art Dubai’s DNA as a platform for discovery.”
ART DUBAI CONTEMPORARY 2025
Art Dubai Contemporary presents the very best of groundbreaking contemporary art from all over the world, with a particular focus on art and artists from less represented regions. For the 5 edition, the fair features 7 contemporary exhibitors from all fve continents, and welcomes some important new galleries, thus extending the international scope of Art Dubai and consolidating its role as a hub for the region’s art market and a place of discovery for visitors.
ART DUBAI’S CONTEMPORARY, BAWWABA, MODERN AND DIGITAL SECTIONS PRESENT OVER A HUNDRED EXHIBITORS WITH GALLERIES IN MORE THAN 50 CITIES AROUND THE WORLD, WITH OVER 20 FIRST-TIME ATTENDEES FEATURED IN THIS
YEAR’S EDITION
Pablo del Val, Artistic Director of Art Dubai, commented: “Dubai is the centre of the Middle-Eastern art market, and the city continues to develop at an extraordinary pace.
BAWWABA 2025
Bawwaba – meaning door in Arabic – features highly curated solo exhibitions of artworks created within the past months, or conceived specifcally for Art Dubai Bawwaba 5 is curated by the writer and curator-at-large at Kunsthaus Zürich, Mirjam Varadinis. Throughout her extensive career, many of Varadinis’s projects have addressed the changing formats of contemporary curating, posing the question “How can we imagine new forms of coexistence, both between people and with our planet?” With this in mind, the section will showcase artists whose practice refects on their own displacement in the current climate and imagines new forms of coexistence.

ART DUBAI MODERN 2025
Art Dubai Modern presents the modern masters of the region, reaffrming the event’s commitment to historical art research and under-explored artistic narratives. These infuential th-century artists play a key role in shaping our understanding of the current cultural landscape. In the course of the th century, migration, Arab diaspora communities, geopolitical challenges and anti-imperialism created deep cultural ties between western Asia, North Africa and other post-colonial regions of the world. In addition to direct relations, these diverse countries share many common aspects emerging from their lived experience in their new circumstances. In their quest for new national identities, heritage and history became essential in navigating the new world, and experiments with abstraction and cultural renewal speak of shared concerns and aspirations. The 5 edition of Art Dubai Modern is curated by Magalí Arriola, art critic and director of Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, and academic and art historian Nada Shabout, professor of art history and coordinator of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Initiative at the University of North Texas. For the frst time, Art Dubai Modern extends its scope to include a Latin American artist, Venezuelan Darío Pérez Flores (Mark Hachem Gallery), refecting the shared issues and empathy between Latin America, West Asia and North Africa.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, ART DUBAI MODERN EXTENDS ITS SCOPE TO INCLUDE A LATIN AMERICAN ARTIST, VENEZUELAN DARÍO PÉREZ FLORES (MARK HACHEM GALLERY), REFLECTING THE SHARED ISSUES AND EMPATHY BETWEEN LATIN AMERICA, WEST ASIA AND NORTH AFRICA
Now in its fourth edition, Art Dubai Digital is a unique section of Art Dubai dedicated to the pioneering artists, collectives, galleries and platforms that are shaping today’s digital art world. Exploring a wide variety in terms of geography and outlook, and offering new commissions, talks, workshops and special showcase exhibits, the section explores ways in which the most interesting and innovative creatives are working with advanced technologies – including artifcial intelligence, robotics, and virtual and augmented reality – to tackle the major environmental, social and political challenges of our age. Entitled After the Technological Sublime, referring to the awe and amazement we feel when we come across monumental technological innovations, the 5 edition of Art Dubai Digital extends the traditional notion of ‘sublime’, once used to express wonder and fear in the face of vast natural forces, to things created by humans. From the internet to artifcial intelligence and quantum computing, technological progress arouses admiration for human conquests, but it also brings anxiety, because such inventions can get out of our control and divert attention from urgent environmental, social, cultural and political questions.
The 5 edition of Art Dubai Digital is curated by Gonzalo Herrero Delicado, an independent curator and lecturer at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art in London.

Museum of the Future
A STATE OF MIND, NOT JUST A PLACE
MAJED AL MANSOORI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE, EXPLAINS WHY MILLIONS VISIT THIS ICONIC DUBAI LANDMARK
text Francesca Lombardi photo courtesy Museum of the Future
It has been called the most beautiful building on Earth. Standing 77 meters tall and spanning , square meters, it is hard to believe that this architectural marvel was built without internal pillars. Since opening in February , the Museum of the Future has rapidly established itself as one of the world’s must-visit museums. More than three million people from over 77 countries have visited this iconic landmark. With its fve foors of immersive storytelling, the museum has come to symbolize Dubai’s ‘can do’ spirit and its unique vision for the future. We interviewed Majed Al Mansoori, Executive Director of the Museum of the Future. He is responsible for the strategic and operational direction of the Museum and played a key role in managing its construction and development. What is the must-try experience at Museum?
MAJED AL MANSOORI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE MUSEUM OF
THE FUTURE
When you step through our doors, we transport your imagination through time and space. We achieve this impact by deploying a range of cutting-edge technologies that engage the senses. For instance, on our third foor we operate a wellness center called Al Waha. The aim of the center if for visitors to detach from intrusive technologies – such as their cellphones – and connect with their
senses and others around them instead. We use a range of techniques to achieve this impact.
My favorite is an interactive table you sit around with your friends and family. Together you collectively hum into devices placed around the table. Once you all reach the right frequency the table lights up and generates a fragrance into the room. On this foor, we also harness traditional technology to create a sense of unifed wellbeing.
For instance, we suspend two gongs – similar to those you may see in a Japanese temple – and make them vibrate continuously to generate an intense sound that’s designed to help restore us to our natural frequency: 7.8 Hertz. Up to four people can stand between these gongs at the same time to reap the collective beneft of the sound bath.
What event at Museum of the Future, from December to May, is worth a trip to Dubai?
The Museum of the Future is not just a place, it’s a state of mind. From art to architecture, we frequently convene the world’s most creative and innovative fgures here to explore the challenges and opportunities that will defne the future. We’re launching a series of lectures delivered by the internationally acclaimed Historian and Researcher,
The museum occupies seven floors inside with no internal pillars reacheing 77 meters in height, spanning an area of 30.000 square meters

Dr. Roy Casagranda. Titled Lessons from the Past at Museum of the Future, the series forms part of the museum’s mission to serve as a hub for intellectual innovation, lifelong learning and future foresight. Through this new program of exclusive lectures, we will explore pivotal milestones in human history while shedding light on lessons that can be harnessed to shape forward-looking, innovative visions for the beneft of society and humanity. Also, in late February, we will convene leading fgures from health policy making, industry, and research to explore the future of medicine and patient care. During the holy month of Ramadan, from late February to March, we will hold a series of evening majlis discussions. They will explore how the youth can develop principled and ethical approaches to technology, shaping a responsible future for innovation and research. In April, we will partner with artifcial intelligence to compose music across a series of workshops. Led by a leading digital DJ, our visitors will learn how to use AI to generate exciting soundscapes and tunes. It’s the future of music. Towards the end of April, we’ll delve into the skills we must cultivate in order to thrive in the job market of the future and also dive deep into the science of breathing. How much part does art play in your museum? Art is at the heart of the Museum of the Future. In
‘WHEN YOU STEP THROUGH OUR DOORS, WE TRANSPORT YOUR IMAGINATION THROUGH TIME AND SPACE: WE ACHIEVE THIS IMPACT BY DEPLOYING A RANGE OF CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGIES THAT ENGAGE THE SENSES’
order to captivate the mind, we must frst capture the soul. We have learned from the arts world by creating exhibits that are visually and acoustically stunning. We have learned from the humanities by narrating stories that captivate and inspire individual emotions. We have also embraced the best from the sciences, both by leveraging technology to enhance the visitor experience and by educating visitors on the scientifc innovations and opportunities ahead of us. One of our most recent exhibitions is called Earth Dreams, which we created in collaboration with world renowned digital artist, Refk Anadol. The exhibit takes visitors inside the artistic mind of a machine. We built it by feeding billions of images of the earth, sky, and water into a generative AI engine. The artifcial intelligence then uses the data to paint its own mesmerizing interpretation of our world. Earth Dreams embodies how an exhibit can simultaneously serve as an immersive work of art, an impressive feat of science, and a compelling item of immersive storytelling. Come and expereince it for yourself. What is your favorite spot at the Museum? I enjoy observing our guests in the museum’s lobby. From here, I can examine their sense of excitement and anticipation as they prepare to blast off into outer space (the frst experience in our museum journey). The lobby is also the location where peo-
ple descend back down from their journey from outer space to inner space, and the world of tomorrow.
We aim to awe and inspire all who enter. So, it flls me with great pride and purpose when I see our guests leaving in a mood of contemplation, a feeling of inspiration, and a sense of satisfaction.
The most special thing about this museum from your point of view?
The Museum of the Future embodies the vision and spirit and ‘can do’ spirit of His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum – Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It’s his words that you see decorating the walls on the inside and outside of the museum in Arabic calligraphy. When translated, they mean: “The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it. It isn’t something you await but rather create.”

By symbolizing the philosophy of His Highness, the museum also signifes the ethos of Dubai as a whole. That’s the most special thing for me.

MUCH MORE THAN AN IT BAG
A lot of things are said about handbags: that the more they cost, the more they should show the marks of time; that it’s chic not to carry one... But let’s not beat about the bush: a shiny new bag makes every woman happy. And if it’s an iconic model, so much the better: it makes us feel a bit like a diva from the thirties, mysterious and alluring to a background of jazz; or we picture ourselves relaxing by the pool in seventies style, a Martini in one hand and a bag with a western fringe in the other. Like the one that marked Alessandro Michele’s debut as creative director of Valentino Garavani. The Nellcôte bag from the Avant Les Débuts collection is inspired by the seventies and features long fringes and large spherical studs.
Meanwhile it’s back to the sixties with the Gucci Bamboo Diva, presented in the maison’s Spring/Summer show. It’s a take on one of the brand’s icons, the Gucci Bamboo 9 7, but the real bamboo of the top handle has been replaced by new materials including metal and enamel, giving this timeless bag a contemporary touch.
Bottega Veneta’s Lauren 1980 in burgundy padded leather weave has become an instant object of desire. But the version by Matthieu Blazy, formerly of Bottega Veneta, is merely the latest revisitation of a
bag that owes its name to Lauren Hutton, the actress and screen goddess who became an unknowing brand ambassador when she appeared in the 98 cult movie American Gigolo carrying a Bottega Veneta clutch bag, which later inspired the models that bear her name, naturally including the current version. Me and my Peekaboo: for Fendi it’s practically a love affair. It was 8 when a preview was presented in the runway show for the Spring/Summer 9 collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Fifteen years later, it’s still here to stay.
The new bucket-shaped Prada Buckle, presented for the first time in the Spring/Summer show as an evolution of the iconic two-handled Prada Buckle underlines Prada’s ability to create a successful contemporary item from discordant components. Minimalist shapes, a focus on detail and sophisticated allure: Dolce&Gabbana presents the new Marlene. The innovative vision of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana combines timeless tradition and modern attitude in a perfect balance of past and future, elegance and practicality. Crafted in buttery refined leather, the Hug by Ferragamo latest version’s tailors to any look with adjustable and removeable straps and can be worn as a shoulder bag or a cross body style.

Who says a large city can’t be child-friendly? Dubai succeeds on this count too. Whether they’re creative, more adventurous or into animals or nature in general, there’s no shortage of attractions to delight children, and often adults as well who, when they stay at the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, have free access to one of the resort’s renowned Kids Clubs, where young guests (aged to ) can learn through play, allowing Mum and Dad to enjoy the peace and quiet of a kid-free day and a romantic dinner (open am to pm).
And what about unmissable places in the city? We’ll give you all the info.
This might sound strange too, but some of the best places for children can be found inside the famous Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping center. It’s actually home (on the ground foor and frst foor) to Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. A colossal tank containing million litres of seawater is home to over , marine animals including several sand tiger sharks, who swim around visitors as they pass through the aquarium’s glass tunnel. If you want to see them even closer up, you can take a ride in a glass-bottomed boat (visit AED , boat trip AED ). Other childfriendly activities in the mall include KidZania (second foor), an educational play centre complete with paved streets, scaled-down buildings and a real mini-economic system, where kids can try out a range of roles such as frefghter, astronaut or journalist (free entry for under s; age and over, from AED to AED ; adult entry ( and over) AED ).
Between Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa lies the artifcial lake containing the spectacular Dubai Fountain, whose water jets of up to meters accompanied by classical music leave adults and children alike open-mouthed with awe. Shows last minutes (from to pm every day), and are even more unforgettable when seen from the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk, a -meter-long foating walkway (AED ), or from a traditional Arabic boat on the lake (AED . , free for under s).
Meanwhile, at Waf City Mall, AYA Universe is an immersive multimedia space consisting of sections with different high-tech graphics, lighting and sound effects; the most popular with children is Celestia, with
its huge ball pit flled with luminous orbs (AED , free entry for under s).
Hands up who never played with that timeless toy, Lego, as a child? Well, in Dubai there are not one but two theme parks: Legoland and Legoland Water Park, both part of Dubai Parks and Resorts. Non-stop activities and scenarios based around the classic little bricks (AED online, AED on the door; combined ticket AED online, AED on the door; free entry for under s). Also part of the Dubai Parks and Resorts group is Motiongate Dubai, a huge Hollywoodthemed amusement park where kids can meet the ‘real-life’ versions of their favourite screen characters (Ghostbusters, Kung Fu Panda, the Smurfs, Shrek...) and have fun on movie-inspired rides (AED ; free entry for under s).
But Dubai’s largest indoor theme park is IMG Worlds of Adventure, which occupies an area equivalent to football felds and is packed with rides, live shows, life-size animatronic dinosaurs and characters from Cartoon Network and Marvel including the Powerpuff Girls and Iron Man, as well as the IMG Kids Zone, , square meters of infatables, where everything is soft and bouncy (AED , free entry for children under cm tall).
If you’re into water parks, don’t miss Aquaventure World, the largest on the planet, with over attractions for all ages, ranging from adrenaline-flled rides to kiddie-friendly slides. To mention just a couple, there’s Trident Tower ( meters high, with slides) and Medusa’s Lair, the world’s longest water coaster for families. And for a really special children’s experience, Dolphin Bay offer the opportunity to meet everyone’s favorite animals (free for under s) or even swim with them (age and above). Entry to the park is free of charge for guests at Atlantis, The Palm; other visitors can choose from several ticket types (day pass with dolphin experience from AED ).
If there’s one thing all children love, it’s paints and making a mess with their hands, especially if it’s on the walls. And the perfect place to unleash their creativity is the Wild Paint House, the world’s wildest art jamming studio, a unique space where artistic exploration is encouraged in a lively, engaging atmosphere. Choose
from six activities to create your own masterpieces: Splat (from AED ), Spin (from AED ), Swing (from AED ), Neon (from AED ), Pour (from AED ) and Graffti (from AED ).
There are countless more opportunities and experiments for young visitors at OliOli, an unmissable children’s play museum offering temporary exhibitions, interactive galleries, plenty of of exciting hands-on experiences and the region’s frst giant crochet playground, designed by textile artist Toshiko Macadam. Kids can have fun splashing around in the Water Gallery, launch rockets and stand up to hurricane-strength winds in the Air Gallery or build and race their own cars in the Cars & Ramps Gallery (standard ticket, includes entry to the permanent exhibitions and hours’ experience: AED for children between and months; AED age to ; every child’s ticket includes free entry for one adult). Energy-flled kids will have a blast at Air Maniax, an enormous infatable adventure park with more than different activities (toddler area for children under cm tall; ticket price varies depending on time, from AED ) and Bounce, with more than interconnected trampolines (under cm, AED per hour; over cm, AED ; all-day pass AED ).

From the desert to the ocean. The best beach for children, complete with play area, trampolines and skatepark, is Kite Beach
Last but not least, for the very bravest there’s Aventura Parks, set in a forest of ghaf trees. With its ziplines, this is Dubai’s largest treetop adventure park, offering over , square meters and more than incredible challenges rated for age and diffculty.
