With rising cotton, transport and labour costs worldwide the days of the cheap £2 T shirt are numbered. Parents struggling with the cost of back to school clothing may want to turn their attention to savings elsewhere in the clothing bill for the whole family to stay affordably fashionable.

How to cut the rising cost of clothes

If you don’t buy you don’t pay!

The simplest way to save money on clothes is avoid buying them unless you absolutely have to! There’s lots of life left in those shoes if you take them to a heel repair shop such as John Doherty’s at the bottom of Chapel Road or The Collon at the junction of the Buncrana Road and Racecourse Road. Boots and shoes can be re-soled at least four times and look like new every time. If you have old shoes that do not match your new outfit don’t go out and buy new shoes, get your current shoes re-coloured at WalkRite on Great James St or Patterson’s Shoe Shop, Scotch St, Dungannon.

Before thinking of buying new clothes think about swapping your used clothes with other people who want to change their wardrobe. This “swishing” craze is sweeping the UK inspired by Twiggy’s TV programme “Twiggy’s Frock Exchange”.

Friends and family are a good place to start but online clothes swapping websites such as http://www.swishing.co.uk are worth a try too.

Change your behaviour Have you ever bought clothes that sit in your wardrobe and are rarely used? Don’t allow yourself to be enticed into buying clothes you don’t really want at prices that you should not have to pay. The golden rule is never to shop with your credit card – if you don’t have the money – don’t make it easy on yourself to buy. Avoid going to sales to see if there is anything you want just because it is a sale. Decide what you need first – buy because you need not because it is cheap. Buy out of season and go to autumn sales to buy for next summer and to Spring sales to buy for next winter – that is sale shopping with a plan.

The Simplest way to save money on your clothes!

Caring for your clothes by following washing temperature instructions on the labels, avoiding the use of the clothes dryer, folding and hanging them properly to reduce the need for ironing and storing them in a dry place can go a long way to making fabrics last longer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on cleaning. If they need to be dry cleaned take them to a local dry cleaning specialist such as Smooth Operators in Sackville St. Take clothes that are stored for a long time out of the wardrobe every now and then and give them a good airing on the line to reduce mustiness.

You might even turn your hand to the old fashioned habit of repairing your own clothes. Sewing on your own buttons or darning socks is easy but if more elaborate repairs and alterations are required go to your local clothes repair shop such as Fidelis’s Sew’n Sew on Waterloo Street and get them to make the necessary alterations.

If your old clothes have really had it you can still “repurpose” them. Old T shirts for example can be transformed into fashionable summer tank tops by cutting and trimming the sleeves, taking a strip off the bottom to fashion a draw string and trimming the collar. How to re-purpose your clothes.

Be fashion savy Be careful to buy quality classic clothes that will last longer and can be accessorised to change their look over time. Accessories are cheaper than new outfits.

Avoid clothes associated with flavour of the month celebrities and bands. Bay City Roller tartan trousers had a very short run – you may need to take up golf to get good use from them! You need to buy fewer clothes if you build your wardrobe around one or two colour themes. Possibly have one bright colour and one dark one that best suits you. This helps you to decide not to buy navy tops which clash with your all black wardrobe and will never be used. Clothes with a similar colour theme can be combined and matched in multiple ways so that you can dress for every occasion and always look fresh and different without having to have an extensive collection.

Two of the open days this year – at Magee and Coleraine – will be held on a Saturday, giving parents and prospective part-time or postgraduate students the opportunity to attend alongside the traditional sixth-form audience.

Attendees will be able to meet with staff and existing students, get detailed information about full and part-time courses, tour the high-quality facilities at each campus and speak to advisors about finance and student support.

As well as sixth-form students and recent school leavers, Open Days are open to mature students, those coming to university with Access Diplomas and anyone thinking of undertaking part-time study.

Coder Dojo comes to the North West Now every child can be a computer whizz kid –free!

Just give them the chance and children will show you that they can not only teach themselves but they can teach the older generation a thing or two. Coder Dojo is a voluntary not for profit movement global collaboration providing free and open learning to young people, especially in programming technology. It was co-founded in Cork two years ago by Forbes Top 30 under 30 schoolboy entrepreneur James Whelton and is sweeping the world by giving youngsters the facilities and space to write computer programming for themselves. Once a week, children as young as eight meet in community centres, schools and university campuses all around the world to get free access to computers and voluntary mentors who are there to encourage and make suggestions as the budding programmers teach themselves how to write computer programmes in HTML , CSS and Javascript to develop websites, apps, games and more.The whiz kids of tomorrow are being nurtured by just giving them the freedom to mess around creatively and find the genius within. It’s fun. It’s educational and it’s free!

Children under 16 must bring their parents who are expected to learn alongside their children and join in the fun. Mentors with computer skills give their services freely as they know that among the enthusiastic digital dabblers there could well be the next Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Steve Wozniac that could create the next Microsoft or Apple Computers or just transform the world with their ideas. After all, none of those pioneers of the computer age could have achieved what they did without the special mentors they had and their unusually early exposure to computers. A central emphasis of Coder Dojo is free software and open source programming and the idea that through the miracle of social networking and interconnectivity we are entering an age when like minded people across the globe can collaborate to make things better – just because it is the right thing to do. All generations are encouraged to join in and help each other to learn. The collective thoughts and creativity of like minded people will always out perform the lone inspired individual.

Millionaire Bill Liao co-founder of Coder Dojo gave extra encouragement to the establishment of a Derry Dojo when he visited the city on the 29th and 30th of May and talked at the European Business and Innovation Centre Network conference organised by Noribic.

On the 11th and 12th of June local Coder Dojos converged on the Venue here in the city to take part in the Intelligent Systems Science Exhibition. Participants came from Oakgrove, College, St Mary’s Magherafelt, Newtowncunningham National School, St Mary’s Park and Drumahoe Primary. A special treat was the weather forecast given by Titan the Robot.

The best thing you can do to improve the impression a buyer has is to give them a feeling that they can flow through your house. Cleaning and de-cluttering is the cheapest thing to do but if you want to go beyond D.I.Y. get a professional to knock through non-structural walls to make two rooms into one, get rid of the island in the kitchen and add storage space up high on walls to take away the clutter on the floor.

High wattage bulbs make small spaces feel larger, and soft lighting brings warmth to empty spaces. A simple change of bulbs to give white light can instantly make a room look larger. Dimming switches and down-lighting can add mood and feature to otherwise dull rooms. Clean the windows and cut back any growth that covers them. Make sure the windows open and let the air circulate when the buyer is visiting. Put a mirror in small cramped spaces to make them seem bigger. A fresh coat of light and bright neutral coloured paint can totally transform the mood and atmosphere of a room. Make sure that the hallway in particular is bright as first impressions can make or break a sale.

2) Get a professional “home stager” to stage your home for sale: We all get used to our living spaces and soon fail to notice the flaws in our home that are very off-putting to a buyer. A professional home stager will honestly criticise and remove the flaws so that you don’t have to discover defects the hard way through cancelled sales. The pet smell that you have become used to may be an instant put-off for buyers and your house stager may have to banish Tiddles to the garage for the duration and recommend copious treatments of Febreeze on the furniture, scented candles and perhaps make sure that fresh cut flowers greet the viewer as they enter the hall. Nothing beats the smell of home baking so the really savvy stager will put vanilla essence on greaseproof paper and warm it in the oven for ten minutes before the buyer arrives so that they are greeted by the smell of freshly baked buns! Little things like depersonalising the house by removing family photos and putting in neutral décor can have a big effect upon buyers as they do not feel uncomfortable about invading your personal space. Removing kitchen clutter from worktops, books from shelves, putting excess furniture into storage or even hiring modern furniture during a viewing weekend are all tricks of the trade that can mean the difference between a quick sale and a long slow wait for a close.

4) Landscape: It may be as simple as pruning back the hedges and cutting the lawn but it is also worth taking a good look at cutting back or removing trees because people do not get a good impression of a house they cannot see. Trees close to the windows can also create gloom inside the house. If you don’t have the time or inclination to weed the flowerbeds just buy some woodchip and cover the flowerbeds with it.

5) Repair Plumbing: Obviously repair leaks and put washers in taps to stop drips but one of the best things you can do to a cloakroom suite is to replace the taps with up to date designs.

It’s cheap and it gives an instant fashion makeover that makes the bathroom seem more chic than it really is.

6) Electrical: Make sure all the lights and plugs work – it may only mean replacing a light bulb or a fuse. Replace old sockets and switches with modern ones – it instantly updates a room. The front door bell is always the first point of contact so make sure it works.

9) Repair Damaged Floors: Old vinyl tiles and low grade carpet are a no-no so get rid of them as quickly as possible because they have a disproportionate impact upon the impression buyers have of your home. Consider upgrading to a high grade tile or natural stone flooring because the higher the quality of flooring materials the more return on investment you will receive.

10) Update the Kitchen: The kitchen is perhaps the most important room in the house when it comes to influencing a sale. Surprisingly, nearly all buyers are influenced by the presence of modern energy efficient appliances even more than they look for up to date cabinetry and marble worktops. Instead of replacing a kitchen you can get a very cheap spray paint job done by a specialist so that the entire kitchen looks new without changing the carcass. A very simple makeover can be achieved by putting updated handles on all the cupboards and presses.

11) Paint Outside: If you don’t have the budget to paint the exterior you can still get the outside walls steam cleaned. Get rid of moss by steam cleaning the roof and yard.

12) Update the Bathroom: Re-spray the bath if you have to, replace all the taps and buy a new toilet seat. One of the most important areas is to re-grout the seal between the bath and the wall, removing all mould. If the bath has no shower, put a small shower unit in plumbed off a new tap set. Replace misted glass with clear glass. Remove any clutter of shampoo bottles, toothbrushes and lotions and store out of sight.

Can anyone be brilliant?

How does anyone become a high flyer or top achiever in sport, education, science or the arts? Are we just born brilliant or does our environment make us smart and skilled?

In the movie My Fair Lady, when Professor Henry Higgins places a bet with his friend that he can teach Eliza Doolittle a cockney flower girl to speak English properly, he gets a result that surprises even him. The latest view is that it is not our genes or our environment that makes us brilliant or accomplished it is really about the way we are taught or how we teach ourselves.

The magic of 10,000 hours practice Malcolm Gladwell in his book “Outliers” says that researchers have concluded that to be brilliant at anything you have to pass 10,000 hours of practice in it. When K Anders Erickson studied and graded musicians in the Berlin Academy of Music he noticed that violinists were split into three groups – excellent-good and little hope. When he asked them how many hours they practiced when they were 8 years old he discovered that the difference between students boiled down mostly to the length of practice, not their genetics. The best group practiced 10,000 hours, the good group 8,000 hours and the poor group 4,000 hours. He found exactly the same with amateur pianists and professionals.

Top Canadian Ice Hockey stars are born in January, February and March because they get a few extra months to practice in the first year of selection to the disadvantage of slightly younger candidates in the same year.

Why are people in the North West so musical?

Is this 10,000 hours of practice the reason why there are so many musical people in the North West? From an early age, children in the town are put through their paces in Féis Dhoíre Cholmcílle and the Londonderry Feis. We are all familiar with the fanatical “Feis mother” sitting in the audience nervously mouthing the words of “I’m nobody’s child” in support of her little daughter on stage. Woe betide the adjudicator that dares to criticise the performance! The hours of intense practice that Feis mothers put their children through, is the real secret behind the musical prowess of the City. As Gerry Anderson recently commented, the people of the North West are no more talented than children elsewhere; they are just “found” earlier and put through years of endless practice. Malcom Gladwell puts the success of the Beatles down to the fact that unlike other bands at the time they got a contract in Hamburg which required them to sing three times a day for months on end. If they had got the contract they wanted in London, like other Liverpool bands did, they would only have had to sing once a day. During the years of practice they were able to test songs and routines out on live audiences and the many disastrous performances they gave made them a better band than the less practiced UK based bands.

Why are Brazillians brilliant at football?

The secret of why Brazillians play better football than the rest of the world suggests that their success is down to the amount and intensity of their practice and training as they grow up. Pelé and Ronaldinho did not start their training in soccer; they began, as all Brazilian children do, with a game called “Futsal”. This game is like football except that it is played with a smaller heavier ball, in confined spaces and with very quick interaction between the players because everyone is closer and the goalposts are nearer – much faster than football. This means that the ball has to be kicked on average 6 times more per minute by players than it would be in soccer. The result is that the more intense training gives players 600% more practice in kicking, swerving and running than someone trained in soccer. Just to prove that it was the intense training of “Futsal” and not the native genius of the Brazilians that produced great football, Leeds man Simon Clifford opened a Brazilian soccer school in the town and within four years of using the Futsal training techniques the town’s under fourteen team went on to beat both the Irish and Scottish national teams.

The month you were born affects your exam grades At an early age, even a few months makes a difference to the amount of practice you get.

This can make a major difference to the quality of qualification you eventually end up with when you leave education. This will affect the job you get, the money you make and the kind of place you live in. The T.I.M.S. maths test is used to measure the ability of maths students all over the world. When Dewey looked at the results of students within the same class year all across the world, they discovered the students within any class that are a few months younger than their classmates always score between 4% and 12% worse than those in the same year as them. The weaker students have just not been learning as long as their slightly older classmates. The test confuses the maturity of the student with their actual ability. The weaker students would score just as well as the slightly older students if they took the same test a few months later. The worrying thing is that results are used to stream students into different ability classes. This means that the older students in a year will be streamed into better and more demanding classes. The result is that they have a better chance when the next test comes up than those left behind. When they score better the next time they are again streamed into a more specialist class and the achievement gap widens again until the cumulative effect is that what started as a small difference is magnified by the selection and streaming that goes on in education until the gap between students is massive. Career opportunities for the disadvantaged student are often damaged beyond repair.

The lesson according to Gladwell is that the opportunity to learn and practice is what determines who gets to be brilliant at anything. Success is not determined by the genes you are born with. Streaming in education can give people a false advantage in life that has nothing to do with their inherent ability. He says that education should be offered flexibly so that people have multiple chances of entering and trying again if they don’t make the grade the first time. It turns out that the Feis mothers were right all along. Achieving extraordinary success in anything you seek to be brilliant at is down to good old fashioned PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE and never taking no for an answer if you don’t at first get access to the education or training you strive for.

How to deal with wasps Wasps have their uses in the summer, pollinating plants, keeping flies and spiders down and disposing of dead birds and animals. However, from late June through to early October wasps are a nuisance when the larvae have been reared and workers search for sweet substances such as fruit. In some cases they can be dangerous as a successful wasp colony may consist of 5,000 – 6,000 individuals and the nest may be found in your loft, in a wall cavity or under the eaves of your roof. Do not poke or interfere with a nest because prodding will provoke a defensive attack.

A properly protected professional with a well prepared plan would kill the wasps with insecticide before removing the nest. Wear light coloured clothes as wasps are attracted to dark colours. If you have to run away you will be relieved to know that wasps give up a chase which goes beyond 50 yards from the nest.

What to do if stung?

Not only does a single wasp sting repeatedly in the same attack but they have a mechanism to call on the other wasps in the colony to join the assault. Multiple stings can cause muscle cramps, headache, fever, and drowsiness. However, if a person has an allergic reaction to the venom they may experience breathing trouble, nausea excessive swelling, go blue around the lips and face and choke or go into immediate shock or unconsciousness. Call for emergency help immediately if this happens. If there is no allergic reaction a localised sting should be treated by first carefully lifting or scooping the barb out with a pin. Do not squeeze it or pull it as the venom will spread. Then neutralise the sting with lemon juice or vinegar. To ease the swelling cover it with a cold wet flannel cloth. Do not put ice directly on the skin as this will cause skin burn and supervise children in case they use ice and keep it too long on their skin without taking it off intermittently to prevent ice burn. If the sting is in the mouth or on the lips an ice cube could be used to reduce swelling.

How to control wasps It is best to destroy a wasp nest in the evening after the workers have returned to the colony because that way you are sure to get most of the workers and they are always less aggressive after dusk when the temperature has fallen. There are D.I.Y. insecticides available but it is always advisable to have a wasp nest removed by a British Pest Control Association professional. Anyone disposing of a nest must be fully covered with a bee keeper’s suit. You can never predict what wasps will do so never use a ladder to reach a nest because it may lead to a nasty fall if you are surprised. It is always good to have a suitable place of retreat planned in the event that the operation goes wrong.

Short bread biscuits are great for lunches or serving with ice cream or just with a coffee. They will keep in an air tight container for up to a week (if they last that long! )

This gluten free loaf is quick and easy to make there is no yeast needed and is ready in under an hour Ingredients 200g gluten free flour 1tsp salt 3tsp gluten free baking power 284ml buttermilk , or if you cant get buttermilk use same amount of milk with a squeeze of lemon juice 3 eggs 1 tsp tomato puree 2 tbsp olive oil 50g sundried tomatoes , 6 - 8 , roughly chopped 25g parmesan cheese

Heat oven to 180c / fan oven 160c / gas 4 mix the flour , salt and baking power in a large bowl In a separate bowl whisk together the buttermilk , eggs , tomato puree and oil Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients , then add the tomatoes and half the cheese

Grease a 900g loaf tin and pour in the mixture , sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and bake for 50-60 mins , until a skewer inserted into middle comes out clean Turn onto a wire rack and cool

100g Butter (softened) 50g castor sugar Grated zest of half an orange 175g gluten free flour Half tsp. gluten free baking power

Lightly grease a baking tray.

Beat the butter then cream it with the sugar and orange zest until light.

Stir in the flour and baking powder and mix until they form dough.

Divide the mixture into 10 balls and arrange unto baking tray.

Press each ball flat with the tip of a round bladed knife.

Chill in fridge for 15 mins.

Bake for 12-15mins until golden, leave on baking tray for 2 minutes before releasing with a palette knife. Slide on to a rack and cool

Many people have difficulty reading a page because of Meares-Irlan Syndrome (MIS). This is where the glare from a page makes it difficult to concentrate and keep up to speed when reading. This causes the reader to understand less of what they read. A child’s performance at school can be affected because of it. You may notice that the reader rubs their eyes, blinks excessively and complains of moving, blurring print, sore eyes and headaches when reading.

OPTICIANS

Treatment Coloured overlays on a page and particularly specially tinted lenses can overcome the problem. If someone has dyslexia as well as MIS their benefit from tinted lenses will be even greater than someone who only suffers from MIS. As the colour and saturation required varies between individuals, the help of an optician is essential in assessing the correct tint. First, an assessment will be done to eliminate near focusing and binocular instability as the source of the symptoms. Then the speed of reading will be tested using different colour overlays to see which colour helps reading speed. Typically, between 5% and 25% (average 14%) improvement in reading speed is to be expected for those who suffer from MIS. Interestingly, even when reading speed is only a little faster, accuracy and comprehension have been shown to improve disproportionately. If the child is still voluntarily using the overlay every day 8 weeks later, then the optician can assume that the benefit is real and not merely imagined by the child. This will indicate that a full colorimetry analysis would be of benefit.

Coming into the shorter days the cooler weather holds potential hazards for your pet:

• FLEAS: Fleas can jump up to 150 times their own size and suck blood from your pet.

They can cause anaemia, tapeworms or irritation to the skin of your pet. One flea can multiply to 1000 fleas on your pet and in your home in 21 days. If your pet has fleas please speak to your vet as both your pet and the environment would need to be treated

Ticks are particularly active in autumn months. They live in long grass and woodland areas. They attach themselves onto your passing pet and feed on their blood. Ticks can spread diseases such as Lyme disease which can cause lameness, loss of appetite and depression in pets and Babesiosis, a malarialike disease that causes mild fever and diarrhoea.

• HARVEST MITES: Harvest mites are found in long grass.

They attach onto your pets skin and fur.

They look like bright orange dots and cause irritation to the skin.
