Autumn Harvesting from your Garden

Gather Waste

Now that the summer has come to an end and as we settle into autumn there is no better time to get out into the garden to enjoy this most wonderful time of year.

Garden designer and horticulturist Sean Mc Gowan guides us on how to prepare your garden for winter and make use of the waste materials you gather as you go. Sean says that this is a perfect time to clear the garden and when doing so gathering free plants and craft items as you do so.

Continue to cut the grass but raise the height of the blades on the

lawnmower to prepare the lawn for winter. It is very important that you don’t use any left over summer feed on the lawn as it will only encourage soft growth that will then be damaged by any frosts! However, using autumn feed can be very useful as this will encourage good root development that will be of great benefit when spring comes round again. Now that perennial plants are starting to die away then why not dig up and divide them, these can then be replanted to fill bare spaces or potted up to replant in spring to fill gaps in beds and borders. Clear away any bedding displays that have past their best and add them to the compost bin for free compost again in time for next spring and don’t forget to gather the fallen leave to make leaf mould that will add nutrients to the beds and borders in particular in vegetable beds.

My child is struggling at school – what can I do?

If you have concerns about how your child is doing at school, it is important to address it as soon as possible.

When a child is having more difficulty than most children of their age e.g. with learning, school work, behaviour or communication they may benefit from further help from their teacher, specialists or other educational professionals.

If you have concerns the first thing is to speak to your child’s teacher and/or the Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to find out if they think your child is having difficulties or is not making the progress they would expect.

There are a number of things you

can do. ► Ask to meet with your child’s teacher/form teacher and/or SENCO so you can share your worries.

To prepare for the meeting gather as much information together that will show why you are concerned. Look at your child’s school reports and results of any tests or assessments. Talk to your child about how things are going at school. It may help to keep a diary so you can note things as they come up. ► Find out what help or assessments have already been carried out and what was the outcome.

• What changes has the teacher made to address your child’s needs?

• Ask if your child is on the SEN register ► Does he or she have an Individual Education Plan (IEP)?

• Ask to obtain a copy of the IEP. A good IEP will contain learning targets, teaching strategies, resources and a note of outcomes of any objectives set. As a parent you should be involved in regular reviews of the IEP. The majority of children who need extra help receive it directly from their school. Children have different needs therefore help is provided on a five-stage basis.

The school-based stages are 1-3.

At stage three a child can receive support from outside agencies.

• Find out from the SENCO what stage your child is on. Then if you feel there is no improvement despite the help your child is receiving you can discuss with the school whether it is necessary to move up a stage to get a different level of support.

If the school has done everything it can to support your child and you still believe your child needs more help, then you could consider requesting a Statutory Assessment with a view to getting a Statement of Special Educational Needs (stages 4 & 5) ► A parent or the school can make a request in writing to the Education Authority (EA) for a Statutory Assessment.

• Write to the Education Officer (Special Education) at the EA, include any relevant information on your child’s special educational needs.

• Keep a copy of the letter and a note of the date it was sent. The EA are required to respond to your request within six weeks. ► After the Statutory Assessment the EA will decide if it needs to issue a Statement of Special Educational Needs. The statement sets out a child’s needs and the help which is required to meet those needs.

• If the EA decide to undertake an assessment they will explain

the procedures and request advices from the school, medical and educational psychology service and any other relevant professionals or therapists.

• You will have the right to make written comments within a specified period of not less that 29 days.

• A proposed statement will then be issued and you will have the opportunity to respond within 15 days of receiving the proposal. ► Deciding if the proposed statement adequately meets your child’s needs is an important decision for a parent. If you are unhappy with the Statement or have difficulty understanding what it means hopefully further discussions with your Education Officer will address any concerns.

• If, however you continue to have concerns it can be helpful to seek independent advice ► If you feel you need more support or would like to understand the SEN system in Northern Ireland there are a number of specialist charities and organisations that can support you and your child.

• The Special Educational Needs Advice Centre (SENAC) operate an Advice Line where you can get practical advice on communicating with schools and the Education Authority, the assessment and statementing process plus your rights and the legislation surrounding special educational needs.

Trained advisers will explain the system and give practical guidance on what steps to take to get the right help at school for your child.

• SENAC is a regional charity that offers independent, confidential advice. You can speak directly to a specialist adviser on 028 9079 5779.

Freshen up your Devices Safely

After some time of using your devices they can become clogged up with parts of programs and apps you may have used only a few times and no longer need. At this stage it’s time to do a clean out to help your device to run smoothly and increase its performance and speed.

There are loads of programs out there to help you remove and do maintenance on your devices. Doing a google search will throw up programs that are not always trustworthy and could contain programs or viruses that you will not want on your devices

With Microsoft you use the control panel and then Windows updates.

As parents across Northern Ireland see their children leave home and make their first steps towards independent living at university, a leading independent fostering agency says that becoming a foster carer is a natural transition for many parents once their own children have flown the nest.

Foster Care Associates (FCA) Northern Ireland says that this stage in life could be an ideal opportunity for many parents to consider fostering - turning what to many is a feeling of emptiness into a positive experience, whilst making a huge difference to a young person’s life.

Commonly known as empty nest syndrome it describes the mixed emotions experienced by many parents when their children leave home – either to go to university or to move into their first flat or house. With hundreds of new foster carers needed in Northern Ireland, FCA is keen to hear from experienced parents

who may find that they now have the extra time and room to offer a secure and loving home a to a young person in need.

Feargal O’Keefe, regional manager for FCA Northern Ireland, said: “Becoming a foster carer takes resilience, patience and understanding, something that parents of older teenagers have in spades, along with a wealth of life experience.

“Although some parents view their children leaving home as a liberating time, many find it hard to suddenly have no children at home who need their care, and have a difficult time adjusting to an empty home – this is why we’d urge people to consider fostering.

“FCA has been working with children and young people for more than 21 years and our experience shows that one-to-one support in a family setting is the best way to help children with a care background overcome their issues

and deal with their past.”

For those parents who are only able to provide care during term time FCA offer short term fostering placements for children and young people who require temporary care. Often this is because their families are unable to look after them during a particular time. This could be because their parents or guardians are unwell, they’re unable to cope at that time, or the child is waiting to be adopted.

FCA provides ongoing comprehensive support to all foster carers including training, a financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities – all contributing factors as to why FCA placements are 22% more stable than the national average.

The Dungiven and Feeny local Committee for Cancer Research Uk have been busy putting together 25 teams of 10 people for the Glenshane Lorry Pull with hopes of raising ÂŁ25,000 for the New Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.

The New Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital will increase Radiotherapy capacity in Northern Ireland. This unique cross border project will be a hospital within a hospital providing treatments to people with cancer both North and South of the Border and will improve travelling for thousands of people affect by cancer. The Radiotherapy Unit will provide a patient centred, holistic service for cancer patients at Altnagelvin Hospital. It will provide Radiotherapy treatment, including combination radio/chemotherapy for curative and palliative purposes.

Heart Attack Awareness 2016

Kevin’s Story

In the middle of July 2014, Kevin Carlin started experiencing the worst heartburn he’d ever had. It lasted from Wednesday through to Friday and was so severe he was bent double at his desk.

By Friday Kevin was feeling a bit better but what he didn’t know was that the clot that had caused the heart pain was slowly moving from his heart to his brain.

On Saturday, when Kevin was at work, he suddenly lost the ability to speak and his face started drooping on one side.

He was still able to walk so he quickly went over to his boss and tried to explain that something was wrong. His boss immediately phoned an ambulance and in no time Kevin was in Altnagelvin Hospital being treated for a STROKE.

When the results of the blood tests came back, they showed that he had not only had a stroke – Kevin’s indigestion had actually been a HEART ATTACK. That is what the pain had been, not heartburn!

Thankfully Kevin made a complete recovery from his stroke. He also had one stent put in to open his artery and help prevent another heart attack.

Now he is fit and healthy, and doing everything he can to ensure it will never happen again.

Kevin was lucky that he survived his heart attack. There are 12 heart attacks every day in Northern Ireland with three people sadly dying.

Saint Columcille and nettle broth Columcille – thrived on nettle soup

Once when Columcille was going round the graveyard in Iona, he saw an old woman cutting nettles to make broth for herself. “Why are you eating nettles?” he asked the woman. “I only have one cow which does not yet have a calf. Until it gives milk I am surviving on nettle soup” she replied. Columcille made up his mind then and there that he would take nettle soup from that day onwards because her sacrifice in waiting for her cow to milk reminded him of the sacrifice people go through on earth waiting for eternal life and heaven. He would take the broth instead of fine food to be in sympathy with her and to remind him that he was living expectantly.

He told his servant to give him nettle soup every night without milk or butter in it. Wishing to keep his master healthy the servant cheated a little and used a hollow stalk to stir the soup. He did not pour milk directly into the soup but poured it into the straw instead.

When the congregation began to gossip about how healthy Columcille looked he asked his servant what he was putting in the soup. “You yourself are witness,” said the servant, “unless it comes out of the stick with which the broth is mixed, I know of nothing in it except broth alone.” Columcille accepted this ambiguous answer and congratulated his servant and chastised

the congregation for thinking ill of him saying that all their descendants would

be condemned to grumble from that day forward.

Recipe for Columcille’s Nettle Soup Nettle soup is renowned as a great blood purifier and tonic and was traditionally given to children with the measles.

Ingredients • 100g butter • 1 large leek or 2 medium- sized leeks, chopped • 4 cups nettle tops, chopped • 450g potatoes, sliced • 1 litre chicken stock • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 150 ml cream

Method: Gather nettles wearing gloves or cover your hand with a plastic bag. Use only young nettles preferably before the end of May and only take the top bits off. Do not pick nettles from sprayed verges or

places where dogs and other animals may be passing. Put boiling water in a bowl and put the nettles in this will soften them and get out all flies and all the sting.

Heat the butter until foaming. Add the chopped leek and the nettle tops and cook until they look glossy;

2.

Cook the sliced potatoes and stir them in;

3.

Add the stock;

4.

Simmer for 30-35 minutes gently.

5.

Liquidise the mixture;

6.

Return to the heat and season with salt and pepper and allow to stand for at least half an hour.

7.

Add cream when serving and garnish with parsley

Advantages of a Vegan Diet

People who consume a plant based diet consisting mainly of fruits, vegetables, wholegrain and legumes have a much healthier body weight, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and they also live much longer. A plant based diet has been proved to not only prevent but to reverse cardiovascular disease and to slow the progression of cancer. This is why all expert panels without exception recommend that we eat more plant foods.

Why plant foods are healthier

David Stenholtz - Consultant of Oncology (a Cancer Doctor), and chairman of the Swedish organisation Läkare för Framtiden (physicians for the future) which was founded by physicians who work to spread information about nutrition and the health benefits of a plant based diet.

In this organisation they have nutritionists, researchers, professors, dietitians, doctors, nurses, anyone can become a member.

David has been a vegan for 9 years and feels the benefits. He hasn’t been sick, energy levels are high, he feels incredible and his need for sleep has dropped by 2 hours. His hay fever, back pain and asthma has vanished and he rarely gets a cold. He would prefer to eat dirt than eat another animal product again.

All plant foods contain fibre, phytonutrients, essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that all reverse mechanisms that might lead to chronic disease. They are all free from or very low in harmful substances that you might find in animal products like cholesterol, saturated fats, trans fats, iron, nitrosamine, hormones and other cancer causing substances. In other words I suggest that plant based diets are a natural diet for humans. Our body wants to be healthy and the most chronic diseases are the result of poor nutrition. So, if we provide our bodies with the right nutrients we will in most cases self-heal.

On the other hand the average meat eater runs the risk of being deficient in more nutrients like fibre, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, folic, but not B12. Another thing is that if you avoid sunlight or sun exposure you need to take vitamin D but that applies to anyone no matter what you eat. Meat contains the unhealthiest form of protein and iron. You are better to get your protein from legumes like beans, lentils, peas, tofu, nuts and seeds. There are also plenty of plant based sources of iron like spinach, green leafy vegetables, dried fruit and seeds. And as for calcium, the same thing, milk and dairy are most definitely the unhealthiest source of calcium. You are better to get your calcium from other sources like broccoli, kale, figs and some seeds.

Disadvantages of a Vegan Diet

The side effect of eating a plant based diet is that you can get the green leaves stuck between your teeth which can be very embarrassing in company. When you are Vegan you also run the risk of being

Method

For the soup: Ingredients

• A little olive oil • 1 large white onion – peeled and finely chopped • 4 large carrots – scrubbed and finely chopped • 2 apples – peeled, cored and finely chopped • 2-3 tablespoons of fresh ginger - peeled and finely chopped • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar

1.Gently fry the onions in the olive oil, over a medium heat, for a few minutes until they begin to soften, add the garlic and continue to fry for another 2-3 minutes.

Add the carrots, apples and ginger. Mix well and fry for a further 3-4 minutes. Add the vinegar then the turmeric and mix well. Pour in the stock and cover. Bring to a simmer and continue to cook over a low heat until the carrots are thoroughly cooked 2. Remove from the heat and blend to a smooth consistency using a hand blender or food processor. Season and gently reheat. Serve immediately with kale crisps on the side or crumbled onto the soup.

For the kale crisps: Ingredients

• A few large whole kale leaves • A little extra virgin olive oil • Seasoning (e.g. salt, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, etc.)

Method

1. Pre-heat the oven to about 140C. 2. Cut the tough centre stalk away from the kale leaving each leaf a 2 slender individual pieces. Place in a baking tray and lightly toss in olive oil. Season fairly generously.

It is important to try and keep the leaves separate while they cook so if required split them between 2 trays 3. Place the trays in the oven for 15 minutes.

When this time is up remove and carefully turn the leaves over. Place back into the oven for another 15 minutes. Now turn the oven off leaving the kale to cool as the oven does (this helps them to crisp up properly).

Remove and serve as needed.

All You Need To Know About Puppies and Getting a New Dog

When first getting a puppy or dog - They need 1st and 2nd vaccinations.

Our practice recommends first vaccination at 8 weeks old and the second at either 10 or 12 weeks old.

After these initial vaccines your dog will need a booster every year. This needs to be kept up to date to ensure the dog is covered against Parvo Lepto Distemper Hepatitis and Parainfluenza.

A full health check should be given to your puppy either when you get them or when you are getting them vaccinated.

Worming treatments should be given to your puppy from 2 weeks old. This should be carried out then every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks old then every month until they are 6 months old. After 6 months they can be given regular worming treatment depending on which brand you buy.

We stock Prazitel wormers which last for 3 months therefore the dog will need to be wormed every 3 months. There are also worming spot ons such as Advocate which lasts for one month and also covers fleas and lice.

These should be dropped on or poured onto the back of the neck. Separate the hair at the back of the neck until you see some skin and then pour on the contents of the sachet.

The dog shouldn’t be washed a few days before or after the treatment.

Microchipping is now compulsory for all dogs and can be done at any age. The details on the microchip must be kept up to date also to ensure return of your dog if it is lost. The cost of a microchip varies depending on your veterinary clinic.

There is a standard microchip or a mini microchip which would tend to be used more on smaller dogs. You must also have a licence for your dog from your local council.

Dental care is very important in dogs to prevent gum disease and tooth decay in the later years and it is great to start a routine of this from a young age - there are animal brushes and dental products available as well as dental chews.

Food and diet is very important for puppies. A dry food diet is more beneficial for your dog’s health. Main problems with food are over or underfeeding your dog - make sure to adhere to the instructions on the food packaging. It is best to give them dry food when they are young so they get used to it quickly. You can get advice on what type of food to purchase from your Vet or local Pet shop.

Neutering can be carried out on male dogs from 6 months old.

Females can also be spayed from 6 months - we recommend to spay preferably before their first heat.

Flea and tick treatments can be applied to puppies from 8 weeks of age and again it depends on what brand you buy how long it lasts. If a puppy has fleas or ticks contact your vet for advice and they can advise on treatment options.

It is very important to socialise puppies from a young age.

There are many training classes in the area and we run free puppy parties for your puppy to interact with other dogs.

- It’s in the mind

Willpower is not the answer Control your body weight by controlling your mind. Nobody ever swallowed anything they didn’t first think about eating. The way you feel and the distractions around you help you decide what and when to eat.

As a result, when distracted you eat more than you consciously realise and you get a shock when you look in the mirror. You are puzzled - how did that happen?

You be the one who decides what you eat.

Ask yourself what you ate in the last 24 hours. If you cannot remember yesterday’s dinner it shows that you are not consciously deciding what to eat – you are not in control. Keep a written log of what you eat for the next week and you will notice the unnecessary food that you ate thoughtlessly. This alerts you to consciously stop when you encounter the same food or situation again. Make a note of what triggered you to eat – stressful work, tiredness, boredom etc. How did you feel at the time and what were you thinking about? Your target should be to get rid of things that trigger eating rather than a particular weight target. Failing to hit a weight target demotivates whereas you can blame your environment if you fail to eliminate a trigger event.

Notice how many times someone else decided what you should eat, plonked extra on your plate or suggested that you join them for social eating. Put a penny in a jar every time someone invites you to eat and show it to your family at the end of the week. Ask them to stop suggesting that you eat.

Your physical environment can also subconsciously make you eat more than you realise. A study in the journal Food Quality and Preference found that people thought things tasted

sweeter and tended to drink more alcohol more quickly when they ate in a place with loud background music.

Turn off the TV, computer or phone when eating and find a quiet place – you will eat less because you notice what you are doing.

Eat more slowly and you will notice yourself getting full. It takes your stomach twenty minutes to tell your brain that it has had enough to eat so stretch out your meal. Drink water twenty minutes before a meal or even better, eat a melon or other high moisture content food that has few calories but lots of filling bulk and water.

Emotional eating Even if you master the art of noticing what you decide to eat, you may still feel compelled to eat comfort food for

emotional reasons. For some people this happens because they have low serotonin levels in their brain. Serotonin reduces anxiety and makes you feel good. It is artificially boosted when you binge on carbohydrates. If you are bored, lonely, anxious or angry you really should phone a friend, get a hug, go for a walk or get a hobby or activity to distract yourself. This eliminates the cause of the problem.

Artificially dealing with your feelings by eating food for a mood boost rather than nutrition does not eliminate the problem and defeats the purpose.

Knowing you have overindulged, you soon crash into the opposite feelings of disgust, anger and self-recrimination; this causes a vicious cycle of eating to start all over again unless you recognise what you are doing and stop.

example does not engage enough emotion to override the emotional desire to binge.

Avoidance Even more effective than the children who distracted themselves from the marshmallows were those who avoided them altogether by leaving the room. Avoidance is a more powerful strategy than distraction as it requires less emotional effort; you simply plan not to be in the way of temptation before it arises. Keep food out of sight in the kitchen and take a route home that does not pass fast food outlets or shops where you can buy the wrong food. Eat before you go shopping so that you have no impulse to buy comfort food.

Willpower is not the answer Many people don’t start a weight control plan because they have no confidence that they will hit a target weight.

Avoid the disappointment of missing weight loss targets by not setting any. Instead, think of changing your lifestyle one baby step at a time as part of a long term weight control habit rather than as a short term weight loss project to reach a specific weight.

You don’t have to feel super motivated for a weight control plan to work but you do need a strategy to avoid the negative emotions and triggers that set you back.

Scientists in California have discovered that willpower is one of our weakest emotions because each time we discipline ourselves our willpower naturally weakens. We all hate making decisions so every time we exercise our willpower it is a punishing, unpleasant and insecure feeling which we naturally want to avoid the next time. This is why we fall back on old bad habits – there are no decisions to be made.

Instead of willpower, more effective mental strategies are distraction, avoidance and acceptance.

Distraction, Avoidance and Acceptance are more effective than willpower Distraction Psychologist Walter Mischel has shown that children left alone in a room with a marshmallow will eat it immediately in spite of being promised two more if they hold off eating it.

The children who resisted temptation distracted themselves by not looking at the marshmallow and moving away from it. The most effective distraction is one which is as pleasurable as the food you are avoiding. He found that the most effective distraction was to think about something pleasurable that was unrelated to the temptation in front of them and was not immediately available. The most successful group who avoided eating the marshmallows were asked instead to close their eyes and think of eating salty pretzels. The pleasurable feelings their thoughts aroused turned off the thoughts they had about sweet marshmallows – but there were no pretzels around to allow them to give into temptation! Keep pictures of your favourite people or holidays or such like beside the fridge or bread bin and distract yourself when your thoughts turn to eating.

Acceptance Hunger is deliberately suppressed by binge eating. The cure can be more damaging than doing nothing; in the same way excessive alcohol intake can be more harmful than the sorrows it is intended to drown. Accepting some hunger pain and not reacting to it avoids the side effects of binging and reduces the expectation of your body over time that hunger will be solved by a massive intake of food; you still experience discomfort but feel less inclined to react in the habitual way by overeating. Your body learns that doing nothing is more effective than overreacting.

In short, no matter what type of food you decide to eat in your diet, whether you stick at your plan or not depends not on willpower but on how you plan to use distraction, avoidance and acceptance to control your own mind.

Making your teeth look better with braces What are dental braces?

Dental braces are an orthodontic treatment used to straighten crooked, crowded or protruding teeth as well as correct the bite of the teeth. There are many types of braces - some are fixed and stay in all the time during the treatment - others are removable meaning you can take them out during meals and at night.

Lingual Braces: are also metal but they are fitted on the inside of the teeth.

This is a great option if you are really concerned about how it looks. They are more expensive and can feel uncomfortable at the beginning of your treatment. Cleaning is more difficult than the traditional braces.

Metal braces: These are the traditional braces or "train tracks". Today the size of metal braces is smaller and less noticeable. Some of the wires used with these braces are heat activated (by body temperature). This makes the treatment faster and more comfortable.

Small elastics are used to keep the wire in place and move the teeth. The elastics are changed at every review appointment and you can choose any colour that you like.

Metal Braces

Ceramic braces: are tooth-coloured and consequently less noticeable than the metal ones. The wires are also toothcoloured and the elastic is clear. They are more expensive than the metal braces and can stain easily if you do not take care of them properly.

How do I get braces fitted?

Clear aligners: consist of a series of custom made mouthguard-like clear plastic aligners. They need to be worn at least 15-18 hours a day and must be replaced every two or three weeks.

This option is highly aesthetic, can be expensive and may take longer if you do not wear the aligners for the time recommended by your dentist.

First at all you need to get in contact with your dentist and get advice. Your dentist can refer you to a specialist orthodontist or if it is a simple case, your dentist can do it if they have an interest in orthodontics. At the end of the treatment you will need to wear some retainers in order to keep the teeth in the new position

How successful is the treatment?

Braces are a very successful treatment but it is important to follow all the instructions about care and cleaning during treatment. Once you finish the treatment, the most important thing is to wear your retainers at night.

What is the best age to get braces?

There is no “best” age to get orthodontic braces. You can have braces at anytime in your life. The most regular age is after 12, but these days it is very common to get braces as an adult to avoid more extensive restorative treatment.
