Is it worthwhile?

A study for the Department of Business Innovation and Skills in 2013 estimated that having a degree will make men £168,000 and women £252,000 net better off over their lifetimes after taxes and educational loan repayments have been paid. This means that graduates are roughly £5,000 a year better off on average than those who have no degree. The earning gap between people with degrees and those without one is widening as globalisation and the introduction of automation and smart technology reduces the demand for unskilled workers and puts a premium on people with the skill to do new things.

What subjects are valuable?

Knowing what to do with yourself is often a difficult choice when you are young and without experience of the world. 46% of us change careers completely half way through our lives and do things which have nothing to do with our qualifications. The average person goes through six job changes in their career. The opportunity to change and re-train is always there, so students should not be excessively worried about the initial choice of subject.

fulfilment doing things related to your field of study as the DBIS survey suggested that people who fall out of college often do only as well as those who never started a degree. Some subjects offer very high returns, such as anything related to medicine, Economics, Law, and Business and Management, while other subjects in areas such as such as Languages and Linguistics, Art and Design, History and Philosophy, and Mass Communications provide lower pay closer to that of unqualified people.

Financing your education The National Union of Students, estimates that the average annual cost of living for students outside London is £12,056.

This includes £4,989 for rent, £1,954 for food, £363 for household goods, £42 for insurance, £1,917 for personal items, £1,705 for travel and £1,190 for leisure. If you want to study in London add an extra £1,465 per year to bring the cost of living to £13,521. On top of this, tuition fees paid to your college could be up to £9,000 (£3,925 if studying in a Northern Ireland university and you are from here) bringing the total cost to just below £20,000 per annum. With the average course lasting three years, a university course could

potentially set you back about £60,000.

The option of staying at home to study in the city if you are lucky to find an education provider with a course of your liking, would cut the cost of your education almost in half immediately if you live with your parents. Other help from parents, grandparents and friends could include getting the benefit of tax relief on their income. Planning ahead, parents, friends and grandparents can put £4,060 per annum into a socks and shares junior ISA or a junior cash ISA which can be redeemed free of income and capital gains tax when a child becomes 18. Even if it is too late to start this for an 18 year old student, making the provision now for younger siblings may cut the overall cost of family education in the future.

You must however, take advice from a qualified financial advisor to ensure that this option is appropriate for your family circumstances.

One option to find the funding is to seek out part time courses and work whilst you are going through college. A particularly

important funding strategy is to seek paid vacation internships with potential employers in your penultimate year and to consider six to twelve month industrial placement with them before the course ends because it not only pays, but the work experience dramatically increases you chance of immediate employment after graduation and will put you in the higher earning bracket of all graduates.

by High Flyers Research warned that graduates without work experience are unlikely to be successful in the selection process and have almost no chance of being offered a place on their graduate programmes. Paid apprenticeships are another way of being paid whilst learning.

Included are some London employers, so estimations should be revised downwards if local employment is contemplated. Northern Ireland salaries are on average 16% below the UK average. Grad Ireland put the median graduate salary in Ireland in 2011 at £19,600 with graduates outside Belfast in Northern Ireland getting a median £17,200. At this rate, those hoping to work locally after graduation would not be making student loan repayments for some time. Having a salary depends upon getting a job and the most likely places to gain employment are shown in the pie chart.

WHAT ARE THEY?

Dental implants are essentially an artificial tooth root that can then be used to support a new tooth/teeth or help to secure a denture.

WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER IMPLANTS? • They are the closest you can get to having your own tooth back • Unlike bridges dental implants actually reduce the pressure on your own teeth and can improve their lifespan.

• Placing dental implants can remove the need for dentures • If you do have dentures it is possible to make them more secure by attaching them to implants • They can help prevent unwanted drifting and tooth movement after a tooth is lost

WHO CAN HAVE THEM? With advances in technology there are few people nowadays who are not suitable for implants. Before having implants placed the dentist will take a thorough medical history and normally arrange a scan to see where the best place to put the implant is. In some cases where the tooth has been gone a long time or there is infection present the scan may show the dentist that some additional procedures may be necessary to obtain the best result.

DO THEY HURT? While the thought of having an implant placed can seem daunting the reality is much different. When having implants placed you do not feel any pain and can also choose to be sedated. Many patients say afterwards that it was easier than getting a filling! It is normal afterwards for there to be some tenderness and swelling lasting up to a week.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE SEDATED? No. The vast majority of implants are placed without any sedation, though it is possible to have sedation if you are especially nervous or are having multiple implants placed.

CAN MY OWN DENTIST DO THEM? Placing dental implants requires a good deal of additional training and not every dentist is able to place implants. If you are considering dental implants it is worth discussing it with your own dentist who can refer you to someone who does place implants or alternatively you can arrange a consultation directly with a dentist who places implants.

DECORATING TIPS TO MAKE ANY ROOM LOOK BETTER

1.

Choose the paint colour last – Wait until you have decided on what furniture, lighting and artwork you are putting in the room before you decide on what colour to paint the walls to compliment the room.

2.

Buy fewer pieces of furniture – You don’t need to fill up a space with lots of furniture especially if you are on a tight budget. Spend more of your budget on fewer but better-quality pieces, and your room will look less crowded.

3.

Mind where you hang your art – Art Galleries hang their painting at a level where the middle of the art piece is placed at an average human eye level (normally between 57 & 60 inches from the floor). This is a better guideline than the height of the room as it needs to relate to human scale and not structure scale.

4.

Place your furniture on a rug – If the room is big enough for a large rug, place all the furniture on the rug to give a sense on luxury. For a smaller room pick a smaller rug that gives the appearance of the chair legs almost being able to touch the ends of the rug.

5.

Create a Focal Point – Pick a focal point in the room, something that will draw attention.

It could be a table or an ornament, all the other pieces in the room are secondary. It could be the fireplace and the lighting working together to bring the eye to the fireplace.

6.

Know when to stop - Don’t overdo the Design, keep it simple. A quote from Coco Chanel about accessorizing: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off”.

7.

Highlight with lighting – When everything in a room is lit evenly, nothing stands out. Create interest by picking a focal point and a secondary focal point and highlight those with lighting.

Driving 5 seater cars in the city has become an expensive chore for millions worldwide.

86% of commuter car journeys in the city involve a single driver occupant. Congested cities are reacting against the cost in terms of traffic jams, lost time and inadequate parking space with congestion charges.

Car designers are reacting with the personal “onesy” vehicle that can fold away, park in your kitchen like a scooter and which you can personalise and accessorise like your personal clothing now that you do not have to share your vehicle with others.

The answer which MIT Media lab came up with is The City Car, a stackable, foldable car that takes up only a quarter of the urban space of conventional cars so that you can more easily find somewhere to park in the

city centre. The car can turn on a penny and drive sideways to parallel-park. The plan is that the vehicles will be rentable at airports and train stations and dropped off anywhere for use by others who come and lift them from what is more or less a car rack.

Toyota have designed a one seater that only has room in the back for two bags of groceries and a top speed of 37 MPH. That sounds silly at first until you realise that cars rarely get up to speeds beyond that in congested cities and this compact car is so slim that you can drive it into a small room or alley beside your house when you get home. That was the idea of Nicolas Hayek the designer of the Swatch; which remember was the Swiss watch with a slip

Applying this same idea to the personal car he designed the Swatch-Mobile with panels you could take off and replace at will when you wanted to change the colour and look of your car.

Hayek’s idea was that cars should be affordable and trendy so that the car industry could be transformed and revived in the same way as the watch industry was when he invented the Swatch watch.

To this he added a requirement for safety and partnered with Mercedes to take advantage of their reputation for engineering safety into their car designs. The result was sales of over 1.8 million vehicles worldwide. The future of car travel could be more like easy rider on a moped rather than the air conditioned four by four that has outlived its welcome in the city. More and more of the 50% of us who dwell in cities will witness scenes of road raged traffic jammed SUV drivers making rude gestures to free spirited grandmothers speeding past them at thirty miles per hour on the way to the shops in their individually pimped “onsey” on wheels.

CLEAR YOUR VEINS AVOID HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES

Clogged arteries (Atherosclerosis) can cause heart attacks, strokes and numbness, pain and serious infection in your feet and legs. One in five of us currently die from stroke or heart attack but the threat is 80% preventable with changes in diet and lifestyle. We look at the foods which can not only prevent arteries from clogging but can also reverse any damage that has already been done.

What causes hardened or clogged arteries?

Plaque forms on the inner walls of your arteries when the vein wall is somehow damaged. White blood cells rush to repair the damage causing inflammation. If there is too much low-density lipoprotein (LDL) which carries cholesterol and fats into the bloodstream and too little highdensity lipoprotein (HDL) which carries the cholesterol and fats away back to the liver to be eliminated, the cholesterol and fat may catch and accumulate around the damage point on the artery to begin the formation of plaque. When this breaks or thickens it causes strokes and heart attacks.

This happens particularly when the LDL is oxidized. Anti-oxidant foods can reduce the oxidative stress on your veins. Smoking, high blood pressure and excessive blood sugars seem to accelerate the damage.

LIVING BEYOND 100 THE NEW NORMAL

One third of all babies born in the UK in 2013 are expected to live for more than one hundred years according to the Office for National Statistics. Almost 85,000 people, (31,000 men and 54,000 women) aged 65 in 2013 are expected to successfully reach the age of 100 in 2048. What is the secret to a long life?

We looked at the lessons from local centenarians and people over 100 in long living hotspots of the world such as Okinawa (Japan), the Seventh - day Adventist community in Loma Linda California, Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica and Icaria in Greece.

No smoking: It goes without saying that smoking does not help you live long. However, just to prove us all wrong Jeanne Calment the longest living human ever verified, died at the age of 122 in France in 1997. She gave up smoking her two cigarettes a day at the age of 117 and famously claimed “I’ve never had but one wrinkle and I’m sitting on it”. She ate 2.2 lbs of chocolate each week and consumed lots of olive oil which she also rubbed on her Jean Calmet ignoring skin. Evidently, not all factors need to be present for someone to enjoy a long life but simple social living seems to be the unifying theme that holds the secret to longevity.

In the 1970’s and 80’s wages, stock markets, pensions and property values increased. The welfare state expanded for everyone. Mortgages were paid off during working careers and the home they purchased had increased in value well beyond what the owner paid for it. No such luck for today’s 20 something generation. Property prices are at the top of the market but not increasing; making it hard to get a mortgage or even the high deposit required to please lenders.

Wages are no longer growing because of globalised labour competition and automation. Third level education is no longer free and UK students currently expect to begin their working life with a debt of £30,000. First time buyers now delay house purchase until they are 36 on average.

The traditional 25 year mortgage is being replaced with a 40 year mortgage which will not be paid off until after the borrower retires or dies. Young people are turning to parents to get a way around this bind; enter the Bank of Mum and Dad and KIPPERS (Kids in Parents Pockets Eroding Retirement Savings).

Help from friends and parents Parents and other family members will contribute to a quarter of all mortgage transactions this year to the tune of a whopping £5 billion. 75% of friends and family loans will come from parents 7.5% from grandparents and the rest from friends and extended family. However, asset rich baby boomers do not have a lot of disposable income when their home is taken out of the equation. Parents are contributing roughly 6.5% of the price of mortgages for their children but this is about half of their own disposable income. In ten years’ time, care costs for parents will close off this

source of funding. Parents currently assist by retiring later, babysitting grandchildren in working hours, forgoing holidays or a new home purchase or taking out borrowings in their own name to give to their children.

After college, children are returning to live with parents for longer than used to be the norm. This new type of family relationship requires a whole new set of ground rules to avoid tax, legal and relationship problems.

Legal pitfalls of gifting money

This new kind of relationship between parents and children requires new ground rules and discussions. Firstly, it is fair to spell out and cover only essential expenses, as the aim is to provide a safety net rather than to finance a child’s lifestyle. Just giving a loan encourages poor money management. Establish a time limit for support. If the parent needs the money back, the terms should be agreed formally if necessary. If the adult child lives at home be clear about which utility bills or other expenses are shared. Make realistic allowances for the future care needs of the parents. In this respect, if parents must borrow to keep up with the plan it would be prudent for everyone to decide whether the plan is realistic before foolish but well intentioned commitments are made. Take advice on using the social welfare and tax system to finance the requirement with particular attention being given to gift tax relief and inheritance tax planning. Downsizing to a smaller home and gifting any gain, prudently passing tax savings to children, may make more sense than borrowing or guaranteeing loans. Finally, make sure any other family members who have not received the same help are made aware of your wishes and the nature of the arrangements so that there are no misunderstandings and fall outs after your death.

When giving deposit money for a mortgage it must be clear to the mortgage provider and solicitor whether it is a loan or gift.

Mortgage lenders may require a letter stating that the gift is non-refundable and unconditional and (for the purposes of money laundering regulations) that the donor is a UK resident with a UK bank account. Banks are less likely to approve a mortgage if the deposit money is a loan.

Deposit money could attract inheritance tax when the parent dies unless it is gifted unconditionally. Parents living in any home purchased could create complications with the Inland Revenue in this respect. To fully avail of gift tax relief the parent must also survive for seven years. Clarity about gifting also avoids claims from other family members on the death of the parent. Real Life Stories from the Women’s Centre

When life throws a few unexpected curve balls in the way of illness, relationship break up, bereavement or other challenges it is sometimes difficult to recover on your own. We came across some examples of people who had transformed their lives with the support, training and encouragement of the Women’s centre. These are true life stories but the names have been changed to protect the privacy of the families concerned.

“From feelings of low self-esteem to ambition, achievements and empowerment” I left school at 16 with a GCSE in art, I studied Level 1 hairdressing at NWRC for two years and gained employment in a hair salon. After 15 years of working in a salon I had to give up work due to childcare issues. When I had my 3rd child my mother was diagnosed with cancer so my time was spilt between looking after my children and caring for my mother. I separated from my husband after 19 years so becoming a single mother was very difficult and I was in forced to move to sheltered accommodation.

My confidence was completely shattered my whole life had fallen apart,

I didn’t want to return to hairdressing and I found that caring for my mother was very rewarding. A lady at the DHSS office recommended that I contact Women’s Centre Derry to build my confidence and gain qualifications to enable me to change my career.

I came to Women’s Centre Derry in September 2015, I was nervous, emotional, quiet and I had low selfesteem. The minute I came through the doors I was welcomed into a warm, kind and friendly environment. Going to Women’s Centre Derry was the best decision I have made and it was the best way forward for me. I signed up for Adult Social Care and I also gained qualifications in IT and employability skills.

My confidence has greatly improved; I am currently doing an adult social care placement with British Red Cross and WHSCT. Returning to education has been a great experience and I wanted to show my children that you can achieve qualifications with hard work and determination. I am progressing to a Level 2 Safeguarding Unit, I am then hoping to gain part time work as an adult social care worker and then move onto an apprenticeship programme. ** (name has been changed)

“From feelings of isolation to connection and ambition” *Lillian

I was extremely nervous the first time I came into the women’s centre, I live in a rural community and found myself to be very isolated. I didn’t know anything about the Women’s Centre Derry before I came in and I didn’t really know if I would be suitable for their classes.

In recent years I was diagnosed with a medical condition that was really difficult to control. I live alone and I was desperate to get back out into the world and engage with other people. The first step was to call into the Women Centre Derry where I met with the amazing staff who took the time to talk and listen to me and find out what my interests were.

I decided that I wanted to sign on for 2 courses, the Book-Keeping & Accounts Level 1 and the Nail Art & Makeup class.

These courses were polar opposites but I wanted to try my hand at both and I am thankful that I did. Yvonne and Julie are my tutors and they are truly amazing, both giving me great encouragement and guidance when I needed it the most. I was so nervous about the possibility of an exam and extremely anxious in the weeks leading up to it, both Yvonne and the staff at the centre talked to me and made the process a lot less intimidating resulting in me gaining a First Class Pass in Manual Book-keeping and Accounts.

I have made friends and my confidence has soared I even took part in an outreach placement at Older People North West which I thoroughly enjoyed and would do again in a heartbeat.

My illness is becoming much more manageable and I am still attending classes at the Centre, my only issue now is What Will I do Next…… * (name has been changed)

HOW LOCAL BUSINESS CAN END WORLD HUNGER AN END TO FOOD WASTE By 2050 we will need to feed two billion extra mouths when the world’s population reaches nine billion. However, one quarter of all the food produced in the world today is thrown away or spoiled before it can be eaten. This means that we already produce enough food to feed everyone if only we could manage food waste and use only the food we need in the right place at the right time before it spoils. Agriculture contributes to global warming more that most other human activity by emitting more greenhouse gas than all trucks, planes, cars and ships combined. Reducing food waste can therefore have a profound effect upon reducing global warming by cutting down the amount of unnecessary forest clearance, tilling and methane from animals that will be avoided if we learn to live within our current food budget.

Using digestate instead of synthetic fertilisers derived from natural gas, saves energy and cuts consumption of fossil fuels to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture. The waste management company is a vital link that brings all waste back to the beginning of the process so that it can be used again without damaging the environment.

Partnership vital As a perfect example of how food waste management works, McDonald’s restaurants have been aiming for zero waste for some years through efficient stock control, ordering and production systems. This still leaves a tonne of mostly eggshell and coffee grind waste per week which is separated out and disposed of environmentally by RiverRidge Recycling. Gareth Moore, Franchisee Operations Consultant for Paul Connan’s McDonald’s restaurants, commented on how partnership with waste specialists such as RiverRidge Recycling allows corporations to solve the food waste problem. The arrangement with RiverRidge Recycling also ensures that McDonald’s complies with the Food Waste Regulations (NI) 2015 with confidence and ease knowing that it is being taken care of by specialists. McDonald’s even partner with their farmers back at the source of the supply chain giving them a free carbon calculator to target reductions in carbon emissions from farms and by planting carbon capturing trees in free range poultry units to shelter hens as they bask in the sun. Joined up corporate partnership throughout the food production cycle from the farmer to the food retailer to the waste disposal specialist would appear to be the local solution to reducing world hunger through food waste reduction.

Food waste: an opportunity to save and make money Food waste will not be cut accidentally. Individuals on their own cannot be expected to make it happen. It takes planned concerted regulation by governments and co-ordination by food production businesses and waste management specialists. The change has already begun locally with the commencement of the Food Waste Regulations (NI) 2015 which requires local enterprises which process, distribute or sell 50 kg or over of food in a week, to provide for the separate collection of food waste and to ensure food waste is not deposited in a lateral drain or sewer. It also places a duty on those who transport food waste to collect and transport such waste separately from other waste.

PICNIC PATATAS Hot or cold these patatas make a tasty change from sandwiches in just 25 minutes

Ingredients • 4 tablesp olive oil • 1 onion thinly sliced • 350g cooked potato sliced • 4 rashers smoked back bacon chopped • 85g mature cheddar grated • 6 large eggs

Meals - Snacks - Tea - Coffee

Method 1. Heat the oil in a small non stick pan, add the onion and bacon and fry until lightly cooked for about 5 mins, add the potato and fry for another 2 mins, beat the eggs in a large bowl with plenty of salt and pepper, stir in the cheese 2. Remove the potato mix with a slotted spoon and stir into the egg, reserve most of the oil leaving a little in the pan.

Pour the egg mixture into the pan and leave to cook undisturbed over a gentle heat for about 8 mins until firmly set underneath but not set on top.

3. Place a plate on top of the pan and turn the patatas on to it, place the uncooked side on to the pan with a little of the reserved oil and cook for a further 5 mins.

Pack for a picnic or serve hot with salad.

CHOCOLATE AND HAZELNUT BROWNIES Ingredients • 200g dark chocolate • 100g butter • 85g castor sugar • 4 eggs • 5 tablesp fresh gluten free white breadcrumbs • 140g hazelnuts roughly chopped

Method 1. Heat the oven to 180c/160f/ gas 4 Line a square baking tin with baking parchment.

Put the chocolate and butter in a microwave bowl cover and cook at high for 30 sec, stir, continue to cook for 30 sec until the chocolate is nearly melted, when cool stir in half the sugar and the egg yolks.

2. Whisk the egg whites until they form peaks, add the remaining sugar and whisk until glossy.

Stir one tablesp into the chocolate mix with the ground almonds and the breadcrumbs, then fold the remaining egg white into the chocolate.

Transfer to the baking tin and top with chopped nuts.

Bake for 20/25 mins.

Cool in the tin for about 10 mins then lift unto a wire rack.

When cold cut into squares.

Perfect to pack for picnic or serve with ice cream.

WHY DOES MY DOG EAT GRASS? Dogs are classed as omnivores where they eat a variety of plant and meat matter. Some dogs really enjoy eating grass and this can be normal behaviour for them.

Sometimes if a dog will vomit after eating grass it can be doing so to make itself sick for some reason: please contact your vet if you are concerned about your dog vomiting.

WHY DO DOGS CHASE THEIR TAILS? Dogs can chase their tails for a number of reasons: boredom, lack of exercise, impacted anal glands, fleas, habit or just for fun. We would recommend to get your dog checked by a vet if your dog constantly chases his tail.

HOW LONG DO CATS OR DOGS LIVE FOR? Cats live on average roughly 14 years. This can vary widely depending on the health of the cat, nutrition and preventative care. Crossbred cats tend to have a longer average life span than purebred cats.

Regular health care, physical examinations, parasite prevention and vaccinations provide protection against threats to life and health.

Pure bred dogs average life span is 12 years where as a crossbreed dogs average life span is 13 years. Annual veterinary checks help manage problems earlier and more effectively. Socialisation of young puppies can help with undesirable behaviour.

Microchipping helps to reunite lost or stolen dogs.

CAN I GIVE MY DOG BONES? Bones whether raw or cooked can fracture dogs’ teeth.

Bone can also block or tear the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach or intestine. Bones can cause obstructions along

the gastrointestinal tract which may need to be removed by surgery. Please speak to your vet before deciding on giving your dog a cooked or raw bone.

WHY DOES MY PUPPY/DOG EAT ITS OWN POO? Bitches which are nursing puppies commonly eat their newborns stools. Puppies may eat their poo having seen their mother do it or out of curiosity.

Medical reasons for which your dog may be eating poo include vitamin or mineral deficiencies, parasites, malnutrition or certain diseases such as diabetes or thyroid disease.

Also some behavioural reasons include a response to punishment, to attract attention, because they are cleaning their environment or hiding a mistake.

Try to prevent this from happening and consult your vet if you have any concerns.

SHOULD MY FEMALE DOG HAVE A LITTER OF PUPS BEFORE BEING NEUTERED? There is no medical reason to let a bitch have one litter of pups before spaying. In fact some of the benefits such as protection against mammary tumours are lost if the operation is delayed.

WHAT DO YOU VACCINATE DOGS AND CATS AGAINST? Dogs can be vaccinated against a number of diseases including Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis and Bordetella (kennel cough).

Cats can be vaccinated against a number of diseases including: Chlamydophila, Feline Leukaemia virus, Panleukopaenia, Rhinotracheitis and Calcivirus.

Your vet will recommend which vaccinations are best suited for your pet.

We had to explain to Timmy that the white socks of which he was evidently so proud were best packed with his jim jams so that he could show them off on the beach when on honeymoon. The bow tie we gave him did not have the flashing bulb he requested nor did it spin when you shake his hand. We selected one that simply fitted snugly around his collar.

Blending in When we heard that your uncle Robert is a keen hunter and likes to take a tipple at weddings we thought it best to talk Timmy out of his request for a tiger skin jacket as it never does to tempt fate on these occasions. We know that you are going for vintage style in your own attire so we persuaded Timmy that he would get a lot of brownie points if he could co-or dinat e with you to demonstrate that you are a together couple. We fitted him in a retro style accordingly.

Standing out But it is also important that Timmy stand s out as the groom and does not just look like one of the lads. This eliminates the need to photoshop arrows on to the wedding photos to indica te who the groom is. We fitted the best man, usher , father of the bride and page boys with a simila r retro look but we accessorised Timmy with an extra broach that reflected his personality. Given his legendary abilities in playing air guitar we thought a rhinestone broach in the shape of an elect ric guita r would add that distinctive sparkle that signa ls to everyone that he is the special man of the moment. He thanked us enthusiastically and commente d that it would be perfect for when he was doing his air guitar party piece at the reception.
