There is a big difference between “getting by” in your life and “flourishing”. We should all ask ourselves how we can flourish at all the turning points in our lives but the question is of particular interest to students just about to go to college. School leavers may wonder if they have made the right choice of college and course or reversed themselves into a dead end. Going on a gap year can help some students to get in touch with what they really feel and want for themselves provided the year is used to challenge yourself rather than to lounge about. Psychologist Maureen Gaffney in her book “Flourishing” gives people of all ages some guidelines about how to think about picking a course in life that leads to flourishing happiness.

Make your life mean something Unlike animals, human beings need to find meaning in everything they do. Every day, without realising we are doing it, we ask ourselves why we should do something before we decide to do it. We all need to have a sense of meaning in our lives because it gives a reason to be resilient and to move on when we are faced with setbacks. It is what makes you mentally healthy. We are more effective when we know what our lives are for and we get a feeling of wellbeing from the sense of purpose that comes from striving to become better than we are.

What false stories are you telling yourself?

If your subconscious is nagging you and you feel deep down that you are not doing what you want in life, you may need to change the way you have learned to think about yourself.

We all justify what we do with reference to our own image of ourselves and who we think we are. Unfortunately, our self-image and ambitions are often set by somebody else like a dominant parent or overbearing teacher – it does not reflect our true inner selves. A gap year, independent, often in another country and living with strangers, separated from the environment where your self-image was formed, can be enough to shatter your old view of yourself and help you see the possibilities in life differently.

To see if you are looking at the world through your own faulty self-image, listen in to your self-talk when you are trying to make daily decisions. Write what your inner voice says to you in a diary for three days. Listen to yourself trying to explain yourself to yourself as you decide what to do. Do you say things to yourself like “I don’t have the education to do that”, “People like me could never get the money to do those things” or “My friends would laugh at me if I said I wanted to do that”, “that would upset my parents” etc. These thoughts may only be conditioned into you by your environment and by what those around you said to you. You may have to change your environment before you see things differently.

Who gave you your self-image?

To discover who may have influenced you and formed your self-image and ambitions, a good exercise is to take fifteen minutes of quiet time for the next three days and just write down the first stories that occur to you about something that happened to you in the past. When you look over what you wrote ask yourself: i). Why did you start the story where

you started it? ii). Why did you include some people and exclude others? iii). What chapters did you organise your life into? iv). What significant things happened you – are they over or not – when do you decide they are over?

Often the people or events that you bring up first are the ones that you need to address if you are unsettled about your life.

Getting good self-talk If you detect yourself talking yourself down you need to deliberately develop a new self-talk. We have a basic need to develop good self-talk about our possibilities and objectives because it energises us. Being motivated to pursue goals answers four basic psychological needs in us all: a) The need to believe there is purpose to our daily lives; b) The need to believe we are headed in the right direction c)

The need to believe we have control in our lives

d) The need to believe that we matter

and are loved We cannot have any of the above if our self-talk keeps forcing us to follow other people’s objectives. The gap year should focus you on your own true objectives because when you are out on your own you can see that you are not compelled to do anything you do not really want to.

The three decisions you must make Once you have identified the false selfimage you have in your head, you need to consciously replace it with three positive assumptions about yourself. a) I am someone worthy of respect b) I can trust others c)

I believe the future is full of opportunities – not problems.

If you set out in your gap year to challenge and disrupt yourself so that your old selfdoubting image is replaced with a confident positive self with these three attitudes, it will have been worth waiting the year before starting your new studies, assured that you are following your own dreams instead of listening to the echoes of others speaking from your past.

17 TOP TIPS FOR NEW RUNNERS

We spoke to Centra Live Well Run Together Ambassador & Olympian and Commonwealth Games medallist, Johnny Davis, on his top tips to get you up and running…

A study in the journal PLOS Medicine showed that running 30 minutes per day helped people to live longer. Smokers added 4.1 years to their lives; non-smokers gained three years.

Cancer survivors lived an extra 5.3 years whilst people with heart disease gained 4.3 years. Only six per cent of us have run in the past four weeks so it might be worthwhile for more of us to consider taking up the challenge.

Before you start running, ask your doctor to confirm that you have no medical conditions which could be worsened by running. They should also give you starting data on your fitness, such as resting heart rate, BMI and blood pressure against which you can measure the progress of your fitness programme.

TIP 1

GET THE RIGHT RUNNING SHOES AND CLOTHING.

Avoid injury by getting your running shoes fitted in a store that can give specialist advice on what is good for your particular foot shape. Clothes should be comfortable, weatherproof, made of material that does not chaff and which is visible in dark or dim conditions. Check that there is a small pocket for car keys that restrains them from jangling as you run. If not, get running gloves and put the keys inside. An added bonus would be to get a running watch that measures time, distance and heart rate.

CREATE A RUNNING SCHEDULE WHICH FITS IN WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE.

and everyone in your social and work circle know that you will be exercising. Otherwise your fitness plan will slip if you only commit to running “whenever you can” which leaves you vulnerable to your moods and the demands of others on your time; very demotivating!

KEEP A DIARY.

In moments of discouragement it helps to look back and see the progress you have recorded in your diary. Keep a record of when you ran, for how long, what distance and the way you felt afterwards. Record your diet to learn what helped you at different times keep up stamina.

TIP 4

GOAL SETTING.

Over-ambitious goals demotivate you when you fail to achieve them.

Set short term targets that you know you can achieve immediately and progressively raise targets as you achieve each goal. If you have an exercise buddy they should know what your personal goals are so that they can encourage you. Do not aim for group goals unless they suit your personal targets.

TIP 5

START SLOWLY.

Avoid injury by starting slowly. Your body will tell you if you are overdoing it – so listen to your body. Don’t feel pressure to be running really fast to begin with - start with sessions combining running and walking intervals e.g. walk 1 minute then run 1 minute, increase it to walk 1 minute then run 2 minutes etc. Set yourself a target of maintaining the activity for a set time and then gradually increase the amount of time you are running in the session and the length of the session. This approach will help both your body and mind to get used to regular, sustained activity.

TIP 6

FOCUS ON TIME NOT DISTANCE.

Start by focusing on time rather than distance. Run for 10 minutes and record your distance. Keep doing 10 minute sessions until the distance increases and you are comfortable running for that time. Gradually add five minutes on to running sessions until you are up to 30 minute runs with comfort; then you can start planning for a distance run.

WARMING UP, COOLING DOWN AND STRETCHING.

Avoid pulled and strained muscles by including an extra ten minutes for warm up, cool down and stretching in each

session. You will feel better and recover quicker.

If you feel real pain it is best to consult a doctor or physiotherapist. If it is gentle muscle discomfort it will ease as you exercise more regularly.

Stay hydrated by drinking little and often before, during and after your sessions to overcome sweating.

Only take sips sixty minutes before or during your run so that you do not get stitches or cramps. Start drinking immediately after your run to avoid headaches and feeling sluggish.

TIP 10

EAT WELL.

Consuming a good balance of proteins, carbs and fruit and vegetables, together with limiting your intake of sugar and high fats, will help you to provide the best quality fuel for your body. BUILD IN RECOVERY AND REST DAYS.

Running one day then having a day off is the best way for starters to avoid injury because your muscles will need time to recover and repair.

TIP 12

BE PATIENT.

It will take 10 – 12 weeks of regular, consistent training for someone who is new to running to be able to comfortably complete a run of 5km.

TIP 13

INCLUDE STRENGTH TRAINING IN YOUR PROGRAMME.

For running, lower body exercises are obviously the most relevant but doing some upper body exercises will help to keep your body in balance.

Strength training exercises can range from those which are based on using your own body weight as the resistance – lunges, squats, press ups,

dips etc. – through to weight training exercises. Taking part in circuit classes will help to increase your overall levels of strength as well as helping to improve your cardio. Many runners also find Yoga and Pilates classes very complimentary to their running programme.

TIP 14

BUILD UP CORE STRENGTH.

Your core is a complex series of muscles, extending far beyond your abs, including your arms and legs.

It is incorporated in almost every movement of the human body. By building up your core you will find it easier to execute the movements involved in any exercise and to maintain your “form” which will make you much more efficient when exercising. It will also help to reduce the potential of you suffering injuries.

If you have limited time available buy a Swiss Ball so you can spend time at home (or in the office) developing your core.

TIP 15

JOIN A RUNNING GROUP OR FIND OTHERS TO RUN WITH.

A high percentage of runners enjoy running with other people so it is a good way to encourage yourself as a beginner. I’ve just helped launch the Centra Run Together series in Northern Ireland, which is a fantastic way to get active and healthy. The 5k distances encourage you to walk, run or jog with a partner – whether that be a family member, friend or colleague. VARY THE ROUTE AND LOCATIONS YOU USE FOR TRAINING.

To provide variety and to keep you stimulated, try running on different surfaces such as road, trail, grass, track or beach and over different landscapes. Each surface provides different running experiences and you can set yourself a different programme of time / distance for each as an interesting challenge.

INCLUDE SOME SHORT INTERVAL SETS INTO YOUR TRAINING.

Once you have been running at a steady pace for a number of weeks it will be good to add in some short interval sets into your training programme. This simply means that in the middle of your run, at regular intervals, you increase the pace you are running at for a short period. For example run at your steady pace for 3 minutes and then increase your pace for 30 seconds, then repeat this 4 or 5 times. This will increase your speed and stamina and your aerobic capacity. This will increase your fitness and ultimately help you to run both faster and for a longer time. This session should only be introduced when you are comfortable running for 30 minutes at a time.

It won’t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.

It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.

Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

By Gerard O’Doherty Nerve Centre Guitar Tutor Tel: 02871 260562 So you’re thinking of taking up guitar or maybe you’re returning after a long absence. You maybe a parent or a partner buying a guitar as a gift. Here are some handy tips to help you along.

1.

YOUR FIRST GUITAR - You don’t need to break the bank.

There’s plenty of local and online guitar dealers out there so shop around. Most offer a reasonably priced beginner package i.e. Guitar, case, practice book and picks. Electric guitar packages usually consist of guitar, amplifier, guitar case, book and picks.

2.

COMFORT IS IMPORTANT When playing a guitar you’re thinking of buying. You need to look at the size of the body. Is it the right fit for you? Too big and it’s awkward to strum the strings. Does the neck feel bulky? i.e. Smaller hands need a thinner neck. Compare a few brands to see which suit you.

3.

LEARNING GUITAR - Some people prefer learning from books, some online and some from a tutor who can guide

you through each Step. Whatever your preferred method it’s all about finding it fun. Set some goals i.e. have a list of beginner songs you want to play.There’s no point jumping into the deep end with Jimi Hendrix mu sic. Try picking songs with no more than 3 or 4 chords and a slow tempo. This will enable you to progress.

4.

ROUTINE - This is key.

Repetition plays a big part in learning guitar. It’s all about remembering those chord shapes.

With 3 chords you can play a variety of styles, from Country, Pop, Rock and Blues so try setting a side even 20 mins per day. A good example of a common 3 chord trick is G Major, D Major and C Major.

TIMING AND RHYTHM Two key elements to music.

Some people have it naturally but if like myself it’s something you have to work on this is where perseverance comes in to play. Try to keep the beat, naturally by tapping your foot or with a metronome. This will help you follow the music and with your right hand strum out the rhythm in time.

It’s relaxing, builds breath awareness and self-inquiry while being in a safe, calming and natural environment. It really connects your child to the earth.

I suggested that if they were going to become a hedgehog then perhaps they could imagine curling tightly in a ball that no predator could get through their spiny defenses, or if they were an eagle they could imagine themselves flying over the mountains.

They each took turns to close their eyes and hold the pose for as long as they could. Then they tried each other’s pose. There were a couple of giggles, but mostly they took it seriously and really enjoyed the experience.

After the children had tried each other’s poses, we sat down and talked about what we’d seen, felt and heard. It was enchanting to learn what they each had visualised.

If you have some little ones that need to slow down, I would recommend this activity. If you can’t make it to a forest, try just going outside instead. It’s perfect for schools, childcare centers and home and a nice activity to relax your group before starting a new activity, rest time or bed!

Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

The cure for worry

In Buddhist folklore the story is told of a wise old man who had the cure for worry.

He was a farmer who lived long ago in the Himalayas with his son. They had the most beautiful white stallion that was the envy of all the villagers and marked him out as the wealthiest man around.

One morning they awoke to find that the stallion had run away into the snow covered mountains and could not be found. The villagers commiserated with him and shook their heads wondering what he would do now that the source of his wealth was gone. The old man just looked off into the mountains, nodded quietly and replied:

“Is this a good thing or a bad thing? We shall see.”

Two weeks later they woke one morning to find the stallion standing in the yard with the most perfect wild white mare they had ever seen. The village rejoiced and told the man he was blessed with luck to have the finest breeding pair of white horses in the country. “You will be the wealthiest man” they said. The old man just looked out on to the plains and quietly replied:

“Is this a good thing or a bad thing? We shall see”.

At that time there was great trouble in the country and an army came through the mountain pass on their way to battle in the north, forcing every young man to join them. All the villagers had their sons taken away from them by force except the wise old farmer’s son who was clearly not fit to be forced to fight. When the war was over, many of the villagers had lost their sons but the farmer and his son survived to raise their horses in peace and prosperity. The villagers came to understand that the true wealth of the old farmer was the peace of mind he found by realising that neither good nor bad things last forever so neither should be allowed to rule your life or the way you feel. Look out for the good things that may arise even when bad things happen. Never be complacent when things are good so you do not feel cheated when bad things happen. Now they understood that “It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good” and that what matters is how you think about it.

Do you have bleeding gums?

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? Bleeding is a symptom that gums are not healthy. Healthy gums should not bleed at all. Most adults have experienced at least one episode of bleeding gums in their lives. This is a very common concern of many patients when they visit their dentist.

Bleeding gums are one of the first signs of the gingivitis (gum disease). If not treated on time, this can affect the support to your teeth and develop into “periodontal disease”

If gingivitis is not treated, it can deteriorate and affect the bone holding your teeth in place. This is called “periodontal disease”. Periodontal disease is characterised by redness, pain in the gums, bad breath and movement in the teeth. Over time the bone supporting your teeth can shrink and the teeth will become loose and you can lose them.

CAUSE AND RISK FACTORS

Gum disease is caused by a combination of factors. Poor oral hygiene allows plaque to remain around your teeth. Plaque is a film of bacteria which forms on a surface of the teeth and gums every day causing gum disease if it is not removed daily.

Smoking, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, medication and genetics are among some of the other risk factors involved in the development of periodontal disease. Unhealthy gums are the gateway for many diseases to get into the rest of your body affecting your overall health.

TREATMENT AND ADVICE

SYMPTOMS OF GUM DISEASE

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. You may notice that the gums around your teeth become very red and swollen and they bleed when you brush your teeth. This initial stage of gum disease is very easy to treat.

If you notice any blood on the toothbrush or in the rinsing water when you clean your teeth, you need to visit your dentist for a check-up. They will make notes about it to observe how it progresses over time and discuss findings with you. Your dentist can also give you a scaling and polish to remove the plaque and calculus. If the gum disease is more advanced, your dentist will give you specific advice and treatment according to your needs. In extreme

Student Recipes - Quick, Cheap and Tasty!!!

HAM AND SWEETCORN FRIED RICE INGREDIENTS (Serves 1):

•A few slices of cooked ham •1/2 a cup of uncooked rice •pork seasoning (or a seasoning of your choice) •frozen (or tinned) sweetcorn •cooking oil •salt for seasoning

METHOD

1) Put a full cup of boiling water in a saucepan empty in the rice. Boil until the rice absorb the water and is fully cooked. Do not stir as it can cause the rice to go to mush.

3) Heat up a wok or frying pan with some cooking oil. Add the sweetcorn to sizzle a little, then add in a pinch of pork seasoning and stir.

2) Defrost a ¼ cup of frozen sweetcorn with boiled water from the kettle and strain.

4) Drain and spoon a bit of rice into the wok.

SPANISH OMELETTE INGREDIENTS

5) Stir the rice and sweetcorn and add a few pieces of ham and pork seasoning with every spoonful. Stir and mix thoroughly and keep repeating the process until all the rice has been fried.

Add some salt if needed, pour onto your plate and enjoy!

ICED COFFEE JELLY INGREDIENTS

•3 eggs •3 potatoes, boiled and cut •2 tomatoes •2 large onions •coriander •salt

•Jelly •coffee 3-in-1 (coffee, cream, sugar; in any brand) •ice

METHOD:

1) Prepare the jelly first.

You can buy instant jelly powder in super market.

METHOD

1) Break eggs and beat until nice and fluffy.

2) Add the tomatoes, onions and potatoes into the egg mixture. Add the mixture on a pan and sprinkle the salt and don’t forget to add the coriander....

3) Flip the omelette after 3 mins and your omelette’s ready.

4) Add some ice and it’s ready to drink.

1) Slice your bagel in half and pop it in

Should you insure your pet?

What does insurance cover?

The average pet insurance policy costs £366 per year and the average claim is £720 so do you need it? You are not legally required to insure your pet but if someone is injured or dies because of your pet attacking them or causing an accident, the courts could order you to pay compensation. You can also cover whether your pet is lost or stolen, a considerable financial loss and replacement cost if your pet is pedigree. Insurance also covers vet bills and with the average surgery costing £1,500 and chemotherapy ranging up to £5,000 you may need help to pay the price for wanting to keep your beloved pet alive. Treating a dog injured in a road traffic accident on average costs £674, and £300 for a cat. Having insurance may be the difference between being able to keep your beloved pet alive and having to make the painful decision to put it down for purely financial reasons.

Types of insurance

There are three main types of policy; accident only, lifetime and annual. 70% of pet insurance claims are for illness rather than accidents so some people prefer to concentrate on covering vet bills for illness. Annual cover has to be renewed on new terms each year so if your pet has a long term condition requiring treatment, such as diabetes or arthritis, your insurance may expire before the expense really starts and the renewal will not cover an underlying pre-existing condition. For this reason some prefer lifetime cover which in theory covers conditions diagnosed after the policy starts and can cover for years ahead.

I say theoretically because lifetime cover customers of a large provider of lifetime pet cover were recently given three weeks’ notice that cover of that nature would no longer be provided, leaving claimants with long term liabilities in the lurch. Therefore exercise caution when reading the small print of lifetime policies.

Cutting Insurance Costs

Insurance cost can be kept down by agreeing to a higher excess sum if your pet is young and healthy. When choosing a pet remember that pedigree animals are more likely to be stolen and suffer more health issues than cross breeds so they are more expensive to insure. Shop around when first choosing an insurer but stick with them once you have begun as they are more likely to reward a no claims customer and absorb any claim if it is only one in many years. Once a claim is made however, shopping around for a new insurer will be very difficult as you will be perceived as a higher risk as a first time customer than might be the case with your habitual insurer. For this reason it is best to insure your animal when it is young and healthy and to stick with

the same insurer. It also cuts premiums if your pet is sprayed, neutered and microchipped. When comparing policies check whether cover will extend beyond the twelve month period if the claim is made during the policy term and watch for the maximum pay out per claim which can vary between £3,000 and £12,000.

Low income owners may be able to get financial aid to treat their animals from the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
