Always meet a private seller at their home and make sure the address on the log book matches.

People selling cars as a trade owe you obligations which private sellers do not and may try to pretend they are private to put you off claiming your rights. Be particularly vigilant if the car is parked on the street rather than in the driveway of the address.

OUTSIDE THE CAR

First, touch the bonnet to see if it is warm.You want to know when you test start the car whether it is being started from cold. An old trick is to give a car a good drive first thing in the morning so that it starts easier when buyers test drive it;

Ask the seller to reverse the car backwards at least by the length of the car. If there are any oil patches on the ground you need a mechanic to check for leaks;

•

Go around the entire vehicle making a point of looking for dents or scrapes or panels not aligned properly or not matching in colour;

•

Put your fingers under the rim and the wheel arch to feel for rust. Bubbled paint is an indicator of rust and a re-spray;

•

Turn the steering full right to check the front left tyre and full left to check the front right tyre. Check whether the tyres are done by bringing a tyre depth gauge with you to make sure that across the three quarter width at the centre of the tyre the tread depth is the legal

Check that the light covers are not cracked. If the covers are not all of the same make it could indicate a crash repair; Check the seals on the doors and boot to see if they have traces of a re-spray on them indicating repairs to damaged body work;

Check the metal strip at the base of the windscreen, beneath the carpet on the driver’s side or under the bonnet for signs of tampering with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN number).

Interference may indicate that the car is stolen or rebuilt. You will need the correct VIN number to tax the car.

If there is a tow bar or holes at the back indicating that a tow bar was once used, ask what was being towed. If it was a heavy vehicle such as a caravan the suspension may be damaged. To check suspension, go to each corner of the car and slowly apply your weight to press the car down. Release it suddenly.

If the car smoothly goes back to its original state everything is in order. If the car bounces slightly before settling, the suspension may need to be fixed;

Are there any signs of leaks such as oil on the bonnet lid? Coolant leak will show up as a white powdery residue around the coolant well;

Take the oil cap off to see if there is a white salad cream like substance inside. This is caused either by condensation in the engine or by a head gasket leaking coolant into the oil system. If it is only condensation caused by a weather change or when a car is only used for short journeys and stored outside, it may not be a problem. If the head gasket is gone however, this could explain why the car is for sale as repair can be costly. You can tell whether the head gasket is gone by checking to see if there are moisture beads on the oil dip stick and whether there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust when the engine is warmed up. To be sure ask your mechanic to do

for when buying a used car and close and that indicators, seatbelts, lights, air conditioning and radio work;

With an automatic transmission park the car in a safe place, put on the handbrake and as the engine idles bring the gear from neutral to drive.

If there is a delay of two or three seconds before the engine engages and if it does so with a jolt, it means the transmission is wearing out. This could be expensive to renew;

a coolant system pressure check. While you are at it with the dipstick test, with the engine off, check that the oil is light and golden in a petrol engine and free of debris as small filings in the oil could indicate engine neglect. Diesel oil is naturally blacker.

Check that there is a jack and wheel brace with the car and that there are lock nut keys to unscrew the wheels if there are alloy wheels.

Check that there is no water accumulated in the wheel well. If there is it could indicate that the rubber seals connecting the top of the car roof to the side panels are letting in water which runs down into the boot;

INSIDE THE CAR

Switch on the ignition and observe which warning lights do not switch off. This may indicate a persistent fault. If the ABS, Check Engine and the airbag lights do not come on and go off again, the car has been tampered with and you cannot guarantee your safety in a crash. Do not buy the car;

Check that all windows open

Check that the steering column is not damaged as this can indicate a crash history;

•

Check that the driver’s seat moves back and forth as the mechanism can sometimes be damaged in a crash.

IN THE BOOT

Check that there is a spare wheel and that the tyre is fit for purpose. Ask for a price reduction if not.

TEST DRIVE

Only drive the car if you are insured and have the owner’s permission. If you are comprehensively insured you should be covered for third party. If you do not have comprehensive insurance do not drive the car;

To test whether the clutch is worn, bring the car to about 30mph when you are in third gear and suddenly put your foot on the accelerator; if the engine revvs but the car does not immediately respond by speeding up it is a sign the clutch is slipping and may be wearing out.

When the engine has heated up check that the heater works on all its settings. If there is an eggy smell it may indicate a leak in the ventilation system;

Never buy a car unless you get a V5c Registration Document. Check that the vehicle details and owner’s name match the V5c;

Check that the MOT certificate is still valid. If not this could be a negotiating point on price; Do a history check online with companies such as HPI or Experian to see if there is outstanding finance on the vehicle or it was previously stolen or written off.;

• Social Phobia is an irrational fear of social situations.The sufferer has a fear of being observed or judged and is afraid of making a spectacle of themselves in public. Sufferers have an irrational fear that they are under constant observation.

7. Am I rewarding myself for thinking negatively?

Am I blaming others or saying that nothing can be done so that I can avoid facing up to myself and what I have to do to put things right?

What to do about anxiety You can help yourself by overcoming the irrational thoughts which are at the root of anxiety. First, you need to realize that you are prone to negative or destructive thoughts at the moment they are happening. Being “mindful” of the moment may involve you carrying a paper and pencil and noting down your anxiety when it happens. This forces you to stand back and look at it more objectively and rationally. When an anxious thought makes you feel under threat, your mind instinctively focuses narrowly on the threat to eliminate it and goes into hyper drive trying to imagine all the possible negative consequences that might need to be dealt with.This explains why anxiety often leads to irrational decision making – if your mind deliberately and selectively filters out positive things that are no threat and doesn’t look at the big picture to consider all the options; you jump to irrational conclusions by ignoring obvious positives that other people see clearly.

Next, challenge yourself about the anxiety you have written down. Here are some good questions to ask yourself: 1. Is there any evidence this is a real or actual problem or am I just guessing or afraid it might be real? Are you confusing imaginative thoughts with fact? Is an illness diagnosed or are you just worried that it might be? Put the worry out of your mind by reassuring yourself that you only need to cross the bridge when you come to it. Fear is emotional pain suffered for something that has not yet happened and often never will happen.

2.If the facts are real,am I jumping to conclusions about what they mean? If somebody ignores you for example it may be because they are preoccupied – it may not mean that you upset them.

3. Are there alternative possible outcomes – am I wrong to think disaster is the only inevitable outcome? Talk to other people who might suggest different ways of looking at things.

4. Is my pessimism causing the problem?

When people are depressed they focus on only the negative options and go blind to possible solutions. You get what you think about and if you do not think about solutions you cannot work on making them happen.

5. Is this negative thought helping me? Fear can be beneficial if it helps you change something to avoid a potential danger. However, if you are not in control of anything and if negative thoughts cannot solve the challenge at hand – just ignoring the thought cannot do you any harm.

Distract yourself with other thoughts.

6. Am I asking questions that have no answers?

Questions like “why was I born looking like this?” or “why is life so unfair” can never be answered.

8.Is the way I analyze things leading me to wrong conclusions? Do I talk about things as if they are only black or white without seeing that the truth might be somewhere in between? People are not all good or bad and when you want something does it have to be all or nothing? Is it necessary to succeed 100% in anything before you can see at least some of your efforts being successful and worthwhile? Notice when you speak whether you use extreme words such as always, never nothing or everything; these may indicate that you fail to understand the value of things that are partly beneficial; 9. Am I being hard on myself over one event without seeing the other times things went well?

Make a list of the times things went well, your strengths, good things that happened to you by luck and things you succeeded in. Carry it around with you to read when you turn negative. Forget your weakness and concentrate on your strength; 10. Am I blaming myself for something which is not really my fault? Even if things do not work out well you can acknowledge that your intentions were good, you worked hard to do the right thing or you had the courage to try. Perhaps others had a part in something going wrong; it is rare that anyone is 100% the cause of something going wrong. Are you trying to take responsibility for something which is not your responsibility? When children do wrong things all the blame cannot be taken by the parent. Recognise that luck is always partly involved in all fortune or misfortune.

Perhaps you give yourself too much credit for controlling the world when you blame yourself for things going wrong.

11. Do I expect perfection from myself whilst giving others the benefit of the doubt? If you give other people a break why can you not give yourself one? Give yourself the pep talk you would give to someone else if they encountered a disappointment.

12. Are there any positives from this situation?

Even when something goes wrong they can open the way for positive things to happen. If you lose your job it may mean you find an even better opportunity you would not have looked for if you had kept your old job.

13. Will this matter next week or five years from now? When we are anxious we focus on how we feel about something today. Will everyone have forgotten about it five years from now and will it make any difference then? Will we have a chance to try again or to put things right even if things go wrong?

How to Cope with Anxiety

A

nxiety is a normal healthy reaction to potential threats which is harmless and even helpful if it helps you avoid stressful dangers which naturally arise in life. When anxiety is constant and causes you to change your behaviour and lifestyle to avoid situations however, it can become unhealthy and require treatment. Over three million people in the UK and nearly 5,000 in the Derry City Council area suffer from Anxiety Disorder as their biggest mental challenge. The number of people suffering anxiety has increased nearly thirteen percent in the past 14 years. Can anxiety be cured or at least managed?

What type of anxiety do you suffer from?

Knowing which type of anxiety you suffer from helps your doctor decide whether you can be treated with talking therapies, medication or therapies that gradually expose you to the dreaded object of fear.

• Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) – is mental and physical anxiety that is with you all the time and does not go away. It gives you an unsettled feeling that you are not in control and cannot cope – and you cannot figure out why. You feel irritable, edgy, restless and drained.

This shows up as tense muscles on the back of the neck and shoulders. You cannot focus on daily tasks and catch yourself imagining disastrous outcomes for yourself. What distinguishes GAD from simple stress is that you are worried about things which an onlooker would say you have no need to worry about. Anxiety makes people irrational. Nobody knows the exact cause of GAD but it appears more commonly in women, people from families where there is a history of anxiety

and people with a personality that prefers to avoid risk.

• Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - A condition that’s triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. People can relive the event in their minds over and over again, experiencing all the emotions as if the event was happening again. Often this can be triggered by a sound, smell or place. The condition can be very severe if there is anxiety that it might happen again. Imagination can go into overdrive, constantly trying to anticipate disasters and avoidance strategies. Sufferers can become emotionally numb and disengaged which can cause problems with relationships. People with the condition have difficulty sleeping and can be short tempered, snappy and easily startled by a sound or sudden movement.

• Panic Disorder - frequent sudden attacks of severe feelings of doom, terror, panic and constant fearfulness that can manifest themselves physically causing many to seek hospital treatment. Symptoms can include rapid heartbeat, chest pains, heavy sweating and hot or cold flushes, stomach pains and digestive d i s c o m f o r t , numbness or tingling in the body, difficulty breathing, feeling helpless, being unable to c o n t r o l yo u r s e l f, dizziness and lightheadedness.

• Agoraphobia is the fear of going out in public, into open or unfamiliar places. It develops often after people have had panic disorder episodes in public and wish to avoid the embarrassment by staying at home.

• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) Unreasonable thoughts, fears and obsessions that

lead you to repetitive behaviors or compulsions.

Obsessions are thoughts about things that nobody else is thinking about. You try to get rid of the thought by doing something like touching an object and when it does not work you become more and more distressed. A compulsion is an unstoppable feeling that you “must” perform a particular task such as touching a door knob or walking in the cracks between paving stones.

• Phobia - is an exaggerated sense of danger about an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. The feeling can be overwhelming and debilitating. An example would be the fear of spiders, arachnophobia. Simple phobias such as fear of dogs can learned when children observe other adults with the same fears. Treatment for simple phobias confined to one object or, situation or animal, can involve supervised exposure to the thing that the person fears so that their fears can be overcome. More complex phobias such as Agoraphobia (fear of going out in public) can be treated by talking therapy, where a trained counsellor gets sufferers to confront their thought

City of Imagination – The future of creative industries in the North West

Bright future for animation in the North West

f the City of Culture demonstrated anything, it was that the North West is full of imagination, creativity and artistic enthusiasm. This is beginning to manifest itself in a growing cultural economy of music, film, fashion and crafts. It is estimated that creative industries already bring in £747 million in Northern Ireland and employ about 31,000 people in 2,200 enterprises. The future looks bright for anyone hoping to turn their creative impulses into a livelihood.

Dog Ears children’s media company in the city is an excellent example of the new breed of company which seeks to nurture and encourage creativity and to turn that into self-fulfilment and economic benefit. Formed in 2010, the company sets out to tell stories and bring characters to life across all media and platforms on paper, tablets and mobile devices and into living rooms everywhere.

At inception, their first book starring Miss Rosie Red was turned into Ireland’s first children’s book app. Narrated

by Anita Robinson, one of the city’s favourite storytellers, and featuring animated artwork from the book, the Rosie app hit number 1 in the “What’s Hot” section of iTunes. It stayed in the top 100 for over a year, and sold worldwide, from Australia to the USA, Norway and Mexico. Their

second project, Puffin Rock, is an ambitious animated series produced in partnership with Puffin Books and Cartoon Salon in Kilkenny with a full animation team in the Derry studio. ne of the local fashion designing talents shining through in the Designer Fashion Showcase of Fashion Fest 2014 held in the city for the first time in November, was Lynsey McGarrigle from Strabane with her award winning collection Sapphire by MoHawk. Lynsey believes that people in Derry have a particular flair for fashion. “The city of Derry’s fashion to me is one of much self-expression and exploration of current fashion trends. To quote one of my idols ‘Always dress to impress as you never know when you’ll have a date with destiny’ Coco Chanel and in my opinion the people of Derry certainly do.”

Lynsey seems to be taking Coco’s advice to heart and has set about creating her own fashion future with determination. Having achieved an overall distinction in the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at North West Regional College and having clocked up an unprecedented 16 distinctions in all 16 units of the HND in Fashion and Textile Design, Lynsey went on to found her own fashion brand MoHawk. The motto of her brand is “Always Dare to be Different” which would be an apt rallying call for all of those who want to make a life for themselves in all the creative industries. Lynsey is an excellent example of what can be achieved when you pursue your passion with courage and determination and just have a go. She was recently awarded 2014 Best Designer at Christopher Reid’s Topher Lilly Show and has been commissioned for designs by Miss Earth International and Miss Ireland Finalists; Lynsey is a beauty queen in her own right and is a former title holder of Miss UN Europe and Miss Tyrone. How to become the most profitable company on the planet

Can you apply the Apple philosophy to your own business?

n January 2015 Apple posted a quarterly profit of $18 billion making it the most profitable company on the planet ever! The company currently sits on $175 billion of cash and could write a cheque for $500 for every man woman and child in America. It has come a long way since Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniac started a company in their garage in the 1970’s with no start-up capital. Even though Steve Jobs was temporarily thrown out of the company early on and even though they nearly went out of business in the 90’s, the company has turned itself around in dramatic fashion. In the process, Apple has transformed the internet, telephones and the music business and touched nearly every person on the planet with technology that allows individuals to connect and do things that nobody, except Steve Jobs, dreamed of thirty years ago.

What entrepreneurial thought process created this astonishing economic power house? Guy Kiwasaki who worked with Steve Jobs outlined the principles and approach that made Jobs so successful.

1. Customers cannot tell you what they want – lead the customer

instead. Jobs rarely did customer focus groups or market research. He believed that an entrepreneur should propose and deliver a benefit to the customer and not wait until it occurs to the customer or a competitor that valuable opportunities are out there. The customer will not ask for a new product but they will appreciate it when they get it.

2. Don’t wait to be perfect -ship the product then test when it is out in the market. A revolutionary product is better started in the market than perfect before it goes out – getting it out there is the only way to be a step ahead of the imitators.

3. Experts are clueless – do not listen to them – listen to your heart. Some

things need to be believed to be seen. The answers to the future are in the imagination and are not things that can be proved by experts because they do not already exist;

4. Design Counts – The fortune of Apple lies in its patents. It is the job of the entrepreneur to propose a product and benefit to the customer and to show them it can be done by designing a solution they can see.

Jobs based all designs on Zen principles of stripping everything back to the minimum essential for it to perform. The less complicated a product was, the more focused it would be on performing its function. He even tried to have the iPhone without an on off button.

5.You cannot innovate by simply doing what you are already doing a little bit better – you have to find a totally different way of doing it. Incremental

innovators are also ran’s who follow and think about the businesses they already have. The true innovator is focused on finding something for the customer they have not already got and sees the company doing things it currently cannot do. Jobs made everyone around him uncomfortable with their current performance. He hated complacency and believed that big challenges bring out the best work in people.

6. Marketing is about finding the highest value that you are able to give uniquely; The type of product you pursue has to be of high value to the customer and uniquely provided by you. That is where the highest profit comes from.

This means you have to make sure you are solving a big problem because customers pay less to solve little problems. If you solve a big problem that others already solve, competitors will inevitably steal your margins. If you solve a small problem that consumers do not need and you also have competitors you are a busy fool and will go out of business.

What Pets Want for Dinner

Have you ever wondered what your pet would say to you if they could tell you what they really want for dinner?

Cats would say: Don’t feed me milk! That’s right – it is only an old wives tale that milk is the drink all cats love. Most cats are lactose intolerant when they are no longer kittens and cannot digest the sugars in milk. Cats don’t need milk so give them water instead. Giving a cat milk instead of water risks dehydrating them and creating a risk of urinary tract disorders. Cats do not need a lot of moisture in food but just giving dry cat food is going too far; give them food with a little moisture in it.

I’m not a vegetarian! Cats are “obligate carnivores” and need the amino acid taurine that can only be found in meat. Taurine is needed for heart function, eyesight, reproduction and to create the bile salts that aid digestion. That’s why cats love fish which is a great source. Dogs can make taurine in their own body but cats cannot. For this reason do not give dog food to a cat as it is formulated differently and often does not contain taurine. Forget the TV ads that make you think cats want to eat like humans and skip the vegetarian

Don’t feed me raw fish! The B1 vitamin thiamine is destroyed by the enzyme thiaminase in raw fish. Cooking fish destroys thiaminase and preserves the thiamine. A lack of thiamine can cause seizures and death in cats.

Go easy on the Tuna Fish! Cats get addicted to tuna because of the strong smell and taste and can go off other foods as a result and become picky eaters to their detriment. The problem is that red tuna in oil is deficient in the antioxidant vitamin E and the oil destroys any vitamin E that there is.The result is a painful inflammatory response in the cats called Steatitis –otherwise known as Yellow Fat Disease”. Tuna “flavoured” cat food is usually not pure tuna but rather a combination of meats necessary for the cat’s diet. The tuna to avoid is human grade tuna fish in oil.

Dogs and Cats would say: Don’t feed me onions garlic and chives! Cats are particularly prone to stomach and gut irritation from onions and eating them can lead to red blood cell damage and anaemia. Onion powder can often be hidden in pizzas and sauces so it is a really bad idea to give cats left over scraps from human meals or human baby food because it could be really toxic to a cat.

Garlic is sometimes given to cats in the belief that it somehow gets rid of fleas. There is no evidence that this is true but it is certain that eating garlic reduces the ability of cat’s blood to carry oxygen. If the garlic touches the skin it can cause dermatitis. When garlic is consumed it can cause weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, Heinz anaemia, discolouring of urine, damage to the liver and asthmatic attacks.

No grapes or raisins please! These cause kidney failure in cats and dogs.

Chocolate – out of the question – the theobromine in chocolate poisons cats and dogs within four to twenty four hours of eating it. Pets will suffer seizures, vomiting, diarrhoea hyperactivity and restlessness. Chocolate damages the heart, central nervous system and kidneys. If your pet has eaten chocolate and shows these symptoms, get them to the vet as quickly as possible so that they can safely induce vomiting and put them on a drip if necessary to control heart rate. Make sure children know not to give chocolate to pets and if they do want to share an Easter egg you could give them non-chocolate dog treats for dogs so that they do not feel too left out.

Dogs and cats can’t hold their liquor! – Alcohol could kill a dog or cat or put them into a coma.

Other symptoms could include vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression,difficulty breathing,tremors and abnormal blood acidity. Some people may think it is funny to give beer or spirits to a pet but it is extremely cruel.

Raw bones not cooked ones. If you want to give a dog a bone give it a large raw one rather than a cooked or small one. Cooked bones are more brittle and could break. Small bones could choke the dog.

Chicken bone should never be given to a dog as they will certainly break or lodge in the dog’s throat. If the dog needs a good chew it might be safer to consider a pet toy designed for the purpose.

Time to Barbecue!

S

ummer barbecues with friends and family on the beach or in the garden on a balmy sunny evening are just around the corner. There is something about the wafting scent of freshly cooked meat mingling with the summer smells of the outdoors that gets the taste buds going. Here are some tips to make sure it is the happy experience you want it to be and that accidents and tummy upsets are avoided.

1.

Keep perishable food in the fridge until you have the barbecue hot enough to start cooking immediately. Two hours outside is the maximum time before food should be cooked but a shorter time is much more desirable. Never leave perishable food out in the sun particularly anything with eggs in it like mayonnaise. Never use leftovers again – just throw them out.

2.

Thaw out frozen meat completely before barbecuing as the tasty crispy surface that a barbecue creates can deceive you into thinking that the meat is cooked right through. Some people like to start the cooking in their kitchen oven and finish the cooking on the barbecue for taste just to make sure everything is well cooked;

Make sure your barbecue is hot before you begin cooking and throughout the process.

This means making sure there is a flow of air through the charcoal by keeping the vents open.

Do not keep taking the lid off unnecessarily as this sets the cooking process back. Removing the lid also encourages flare ups. The only real way to keep the temperature right is to have the right amount of charcoal – never fill the base with more than two inches depth of charcoal as anything greater will become too hot.

To get the barbecue started put the charcoal in a “Chimney starter” and place them on lighters. Weber barbecues have all these accessories which can be easily obtained from CFC Interiors. This could eliminate much puffing and swearing! Never put lighters or lighter fuel on to hot coals and NEVER use petrol to start a barbecue.

To have a safe enjoyable experience, keep children and pets away from the barbecue area, wear protective gloves, never leave the barbecue unattended and have a bucket of water or sand nearby just in case you need to put out a fire. Put sand not water directly on to the barbecue in an emergency. It does no harm to have some antiseptic cream nearby with plasters for the odd

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC burn. If anyone does get a burn the correct procedure is to immediately plunge the burn area into very cold water to avoid blistering and scars. This could be repeated for 30 minutes if necessary. When finished, let the barbecue cool down completely overnight before moving. Only dispose of the coals when they are completely cold as you could get a nasty shock if you put hot coals into a plastic bin.
