Eine Frage der Harmonie

Einmal Silber und zweimal Bronze bei der Para-Ski-Weltmeisterschaft, dazu sechs Staatsmeistertitel in der Klasse der Sehbehinderten sowie die Auszeichnung zum Sportler des Jahres 2019 – was normalerweise die Bilanz eines langen Sportlerlebens ist, erreichten Josef Lahner und sein Freund und Guide Franz Erharter in vier Wintern.

Neben dem fahrerischen Können sind Vertrauen und Harmonie die wichtigsten Faktoren, um schnell und sicher ins Ziel zu kommen, erklärt Josef "Jimmy" Lahner das Geheimnis seiner Erfolge im Paraski in der Klasse der Sehbehinderten. Wem er dieses Vertrauen entgegenbringt? Seinem Freund und Guide Franz Erharter. Die beiden Freunde sind praktisch neben der Skipiste in der Kelchsau aufgewachsen und standen schon als Knirpse auf den Skiern. "Gemeinsam mit den Kindern im Dorf haben wir beim Skiclub Kelchsau trainiert. Wobei mir die Waldwegerln immer mehr getaugt haben als das Stanglfahren. Deshalb hat es wohl auch nur für ein paar Bezirks- und Clubrennen gereicht", erinnert sich Jimmy. In späteren Jahren gab es ein paar sportliche Ausflüge zum Ringen und Fußball. Das Skifahren hat ihn aber nie ganz losgelassen. Die Idee, gemeinsam als Team bei Paraski-Bewerben zu starten, hatten Josef und Franz vor etwa vier Jahren. Schon bei den ersten AustriaCup-Rennen stellten sich diverse Erfolge ein, sodass sie in ihrer ersten Wettkampfsaison zu den "Aufsteigern des Jahres" gekürt wurden. Dann wurde es schnell ernst, denn die Leistungsdichte im Paraski ist hoch, entsprechend professionell sind die Vorbereitungen auf die Rennen. Drei- bis viermal pro Woche trainieren die beiden als Team gemeinsam mit den RennläuferInnen des SC Kelchsau. "Die Gemeinschaft im Skiclub ist für uns sehr wichtig", so Jimmy. Geschenkt wird dem Duo dabei nichts. "Die Trainer stellen an uns gleich hohe Anforderungen wie an alle anderen AthletInnen", bestätigt Josef. Beim Paraski ist in der Klasse der Sehbehinderten neben der Skitechnik ein weiterer Faktor entscheidend: die Harmonie zwischen dem Parathleten und seinem Guide. Dieser fährt einige Meter vor dem Athleten und gibt via Headset Richtungskommandos bzw. Hinweise auf den Pistenzustand. Um die Kommunikation beim Rennen auf das Notwendigste zu beschränken, haben sich die beiden eine eigene Sprache überlegt. "Er sagt mir, in welche Richtung ich fahren muss, ich sage ihm, wie schnell er fahren soll", erklärt Josef den Ablauf bei einem Rennen. Franz hat für seine Aufgabe als Guide eine spezielle Ausbildung beim Blindenverband absolviert. "Ich vertraue Franz voll und ganz. Ohne ihn wären die ganzen Erfolge nicht möglich", ist der Para-Sportler überzeugt. Was soll man sagen? Es klappt! Jimmy und Franz sind kometenhaft vom C-, in den B-Kader und schließlich in das Nationalteam des ÖSV aufgestiegen und haben sich 2019 für die Para-Ski-WM qualifiziert. Das Ergebnis ist bekannt: Silber in der Abfahrt (die erste, die sie gefahren sind), Bronze im Riesenslalom und Bronze im Slalom. Einen Wermutstropfen gab es allerdings: Bestzeit im Super-G, doch leider beim letzten Tor vorbeigefahren. "Diese Medaille hol ich mir diesen Winter bei der Para-SkiWM in Lillehammer", gibt sich Jimmy kämpferisch. Ein weiteres großes Ziel der beiden ist die Teilnahme an den Paralympics in Peking 2022. ■

Für seine sportlichen Leistungen wurde der Kelchsauer Josef "Jimmy"Lahner 2019 zum Sportler des Jahres gewählt und bei der großen Sporthilfe-Gala mit dem "Niki" (Trophäe) ausgezeichnet. A QUESTION OF HARMONY

One silver and two bronze medals at the Para-Ski World Championships, six national championship titles in the visually impaired category and "Sportsman of the Year 2019” award - results you may hope to achieve after a long and successful sporting life, were accomplished by Josef "Jimmy" Lahner and his friend and guide Franz Erharter in just four winters.

In addition to skiing skills, trust and harmony are the most important factors for reaching the finish line quickly and safely, says Josef "Jimmy" Lahner, explaining the secret of his success in para-skiing in the visually impaired category. In whom does he place this trust? His friend and guide Franz Erharter. The two friends grew up practically next to the ski slopes in Kelchsau and started skiing as toddlers. “We trained at Kelchsau Ski Club, together with the children from the village, whereby I always enjoyed skiing on the forest trails, rather than around slalom gates. That might explain why I only took part in a few district and club races”, remembers Jimmy. In later years, he went on a few sporting outings to watch wrestling and football, but skiing never really left him alone. Josef and Franz came up with the idea of competing together in para-ski competitions as a team around four years ago. “After initial successes in the Austrian Cup, they were named “Shooting Star of the Year” in their first competition season. Things then quickly got serious, because competition in para-ski is high, and preparations for the races are respectively professional. The two of them train as a team together with the racers of SC Kelchsau three to four times a week. "The team spirit of the ski club is very important for us," says Jimmy. The duo, however, are not given an easy ride. "The trainers place the same high demands on us as they do on all other athletes," confirms Josef. In para-ski, there is another decisive factor besides skiing technique for success in the visually impaired category: harmony between the para-athlete and his guide. The guide skis a few metres ahead of the athlete and gives directional commands or information about the condition of the slope via headset. In order to limit communication during the race to a bare minimum, the two have come up with their own language. "He tells me which direction I have to go, I tell him how fast he has to go", Josef explains the procedure during a race. “I trust Franz implicitly. Without him, all this successes would not be possible," the para-athlete is convinced. What can you say? It obviously works! Jimmy and Franz have enjoyed a meteoric rise from the C and B ranks and finally to the ÖSV national team and qualified for the Para-Ski World Cup in 2019. We all know how that turned out: Silver in the Downhill (the first they have ever skied), bronze in the Giant Slalom and bronze in the Slalom. There was a little downside too: They achieved the best time in the Super-G, but missed the final gate. “I’ll bag that medal this winter at the Para-Ski, World Championships in Lillehammer", Jimmy says with a fighting spirit. Their next big goal is to participate in the Paralympics in Beijing in 2022. ■
