這幾年政府一直推動環保車，甚至推出稅 務寬減優惠，作為對抗氣候變化的策略 之一。在歐美日各國，環保車更是大行其 道。環保車，不是已經有效減排了嗎? 現時，港府所訂立的環保汽油私家車標準 是車輛的燃料效率，需較相同重量類別 私家車的平均燃料效率高至少 40%（以每 公升燃料行走里數計算）。此標準以汽車 的重量為基準，容許重型私家車排放更 多二氧化碳。換句話說，是鼓吹了大馬 力的私家車，反而加劇了氣候變化。 我們的調查發現，被政府列為環保車的 39 款私家車，碳排放量參差不齊，由每 公里 98-274 克不等。相對在英國，2007 年新車的二氧化碳平均排放量為每公里 158 克，但排放這個指標的車主，已需要 繳交較高的車輛牌照費作為碳排放的懲 罰。反之在香港，不少所謂「環保車」的 碳排放均高達此水平，卻可享有 $50,000 首次登記稅寬減。相比各國公平地以單一 碳排放為指標，港府卻提供稅務減免予大 馬力私家車，無效控制二氧化碳排放，更 令「環保車」虛有其名。

一天的無車香港，代表了什麼? 因此我們再次在香港舉辦無車日，目的 就是想再次提醒大家，要應對氣候變 化，就要實實在在的實踐低碳生活，並 非叫叫口號，播播宣傳片就行。 不要低估無車一天的力量，只要我們每 個人都願意由 9.22 開始多走一點路，少 駕一次車，感染更多人關注氣候變化； 延緩氣候變化不是沒有可能的。

還需要更多愛地球，順便利己利人的理由支持無車日嗎？ 你會在這裡找到答案。 1) 香港地方細細，車輛的排放量卻不細。且看以下的數字: 1 公噸二氧化碳需要 84 棵樹，花一年時間才能吸收 全港車輛一天的排放量 = 3,428 公噸二氧化碳 要將這些二氧化碳完全吸收的話，需要 287,952 棵樹，花一年時間才能吸收。 只消無車一天，就能夠減少這麼多的二氧化碳排放。

環保項目工作

環保車？不如無車！

2) 除了二氧化碳，私家車排放的廢氣也是空氣污染的主要源頭。無車一天，吸一口 氣也放心一點。 3) 多步行，修身 keep fit 最有效最慳錢。步行一小時，足可以消耗一件芝士蛋糕的卡 路里。 4) 香港差不多天天都會塞車。乘坐巴士，一見路面情況不對勁，可以在下一站下車， 即時更改路線。乘坐地鐵的話，塞車更與你絕緣。 5) 找泊車位絕對是有車人士的一大煩惱。萬一趕時間，找車位所需的時間，足以令 你「遲大到」。無車，相對而言，自由自在。 6)「地下鐵碰著她?」陳百強 N 年前的舊歌的一段歌詞，隨時隨地成真。 坐地鐵搭巴士，說不定下一站就有位俊男美女上車坐在你身邊。 7) 政府都有話：「開車前，咪飲！」無車日翌日是假期，少不免會出外玩；無駕車， 就算喝多兩杯酒也不用擔心。 8) 晨早上班，睡魔急召，還要握緊軚盤，打醒十二分精神留意路面情況？ 還是趁坐車的時候，小睡片刻來得輕鬆!

9) 趁坐巴士或地鐵的數十分鐘，和朋友家人好好的交談，增進感情，總比花心神看 著「綠燈轉眼變成紅燈」有趣得多。 10) 駕車出外，油費、泊車費加起來，絕對足夠吃一頓不錯的自助餐或買那對心儀的 波鞋。計計數，都是乘坐公共交通工具有著數。

虎年救虎行動 GREENPOST

2010 年是虎年，可是 老虎卻為了廁紙或雜 誌而慢慢消失。 馬利超，綠色和平森林項目主任

拯救哪種老虎？ 今次行動就是為了拯救蘇門答臘虎 （pantera tigris sumatrae） 。讓蘇門 答臘虎可以平穩過渡下一個虎年。

牠們住在哪裡？

誰在破壞森林？

只有在印尼的蘇門答臘島才能找 到牠們的蹤影。國際自然保護聯 盟指出，蘇門答臘虎只在 12 個與 世隔絕的森林深處找到。將所有 面積加起來，大約有 2 個比利時 的大小。

印尼財團金光集團（Sinar Mas） 及其子公司亞洲漿紙（APP）。 APP 是印尼最大的漿紙製造商， 他們在印尼蘇門答臘中部最茂密的 雨林中開辟林場，以生產紙漿及 種植棕櫚樹，從而令老虎的棲息地 消失和支離破碎。我們日常見到的 雜誌和廁紙，也是從這裡得來。

還剩下多少隻？ 大約 500，數字正逐部下降。

為何只剩那麼少？ 為什麼拯救蘇門答臘虎， 而不是中國老虎？ 因為中國的野生老虎比蘇門答臘虎 得到更好的保護。

森林的消失是主要原因。根據國 際自然保護聯盟的數字顯示，牠 們棲息的森林，每年有 5.9%被砍 伐掉。

為何要拯救老虎？ 老虎既美麗又勇敢，是幾千年來 進化而成的生物。地球由人類和動 物共同擁有，要是人類為了生產 廁紙，而讓其他大量物種滅絕，試 問這是一個多麼可怕的世界？森林 需要老虎，就如老虎需要森林。 就趁今年虎年，齊來救虎吧。

部份木材來自破壞熱帶雨林和泥碳 地，還計劃遊說印尼政府，批准他們 砍伐更多樹林。 他們的砍伐目標已經包括蘇門答臘島上中央地 區的森林，也是蘇門答臘虎最後一片棲息地。 為了什麼？就是為了生產廁紙、包裝紙和看一 天就丟掉的雜誌紙。

APP於蘇門答臘的兩間製漿廠都出口到中國 （看地圖）。大部份會送到鎮江市的金東紙業造 紙廠（APP 的子公司）。紙廠每年生產 220 萬公 噸的紙，差不多是中國印刷粉紙（包括小冊子和 雜誌用的光粉紙）生產總數的一半。其後用於 中國或出口全世界，以雜誌、紙巾和廁紙等形 式出現在超級市場的貨架上。

印尼蘇門答臘島的泥炭地森林風貌

APP 破壞雨林和泥碳地，不單止摧毀老虎的棲 息地，更釋出大量破壞氣候的溫室氣體。 印尼政府亦承認其碳排放量至少佔全球溫室氣 體排放總量 5%，其中 80% 是與天然森林及泥 碳地的損失有關。 ■ 兩座位於蘇門答臘的 APP 製漿廠，所破壞的 雨林大於島上其他任何一間公司。（資料來 源︰世界自然基金會） ■ 印尼全國 80% 的溫室氣體，是與天然森林及 泥碳地損失有關。

為何我們的目標是 APP？ ■ 因為 APP 是蘇門答臘虎最大的威脅。 ■ 因為 APP 不值得信任。口說支持百分百持續發展，卻積極尋找更多砍伐地點。 ■ 因為 APP 在蘇門答臘的行為破壞我們的氣候。

誰撐 APP 腰？ 那些企業支持 APP？ 不少公司購買 APP 或含有 APP 紙張的產品。以下這些名字， 可能會讓你感到意外︰ 沃爾瑪（Walmart） *，林克斯紙業公司（Paperlinx） ， WHSmith，Corporate Express，惠普（HP） ，歐尚 （Auchan） *，肯德基家鄉雞*，中國國家地理雜誌*， CNN 旅人雜誌（CNN Traveler） ，Cosmo*，Cosmo Girl*， Elle*，君子雜誌*，瑪麗嘉兒* *於中國出售

那些企業與 APP 劃清界線？ 綠色和平一直努力令不少跟金光集團有生意來往的公司改變主 意。以下只是少數近日棄用金光集團及 APP 產品的公司，亦 是你應該支持的良心企業︰ 卡夫（Kraft），雀巢（Nestle），聯合利華（Unilever），匯豐銀 行（HSBC） 美國的雨林聯盟（Rainforest Alliance）於 2008 年解除跟 APP 的合作︰「雨林聯盟決定不再被亞洲漿紙 APP 利用，作為誤 導公眾及消費者的工具。」 2007 年森林管理委員會（Forest Stewardship Council, FSC） 也決定︰「除非亞洲漿紙 APP 立即全面停止破壞天然森林， 並提出足夠的證據，否則 FSC 不應該再允許自身和 APP 及其 有股份的公司再有任何關連。」

我們在 7 月發表了調查報告「紙 猛於虎─金光集團 APP 如何將 蘇門答臘虎推向滅絕」，揭露 APP 破壞老虎棲息地造紙的幕 後真相，引起傳媒高度關注， 數間企業包括香港人熟悉的匯 豐銀行因而截斷所有跟金光集 團及其子公司的生意來往。

2. 遊說金光集團及 APP 客戶 綠色和平和支持者利用網上媒體、諷刺性廣告和傳媒壓力，成功說服 聯合利華（Unilever）、雀巢（Nestle）等大企業，停止使用金光集團及 APP 的產品。最近一次的勝利是在 5 月，我們成功令雀巢旗下的 Kitkat 朱古力，停止使用金光集團的棕櫚油，改用可持續來源的棕櫚油，換言 之是跟金光集團劃清界線。

我們怎樣拯救老虎 ?

3. 向超級市場施壓

我們希望阻止國內超級市場出售殺害老虎的品 牌。早前，3 名綠色和平成員打扮成蘇門答臘 虎，在北京的歐尚（Auchan）連鎖超級市場外 抗議。希望告訴消費者不要購買清風（Breeze） 廁紙因為他們是 APP 的紙產品，並要求超級市 場停止售賣清風以外其他的 APP 產品。超市 特易購（Tesco）和家樂福（Carrefour）答應立 即或於年底前，停止自有品牌與 APP 的合作。 歐尚朝陽北路店亦作出口頭積極承諾，表示馬 上通知採購部停止購買 APP 紙品。我們將繼續 與歐尚總部溝通，確保他們兌現承諾。

作為消費者，你能做什麼？ 1. 不要購買清風（Breeze）或任何 APP 的紙產品 2. 不要購買 APP 母公司金光集團生產的棕櫚油產品（包括肥皂，洗髮水，食品）， 例如內地的大滿貫食油及華豐即食麵。 3. 向光顧的超市寫信或要求他們停止讓 APP 的產品上架。 4. 如果你心愛的雜誌正使用APP 的紙，要求他們使用其他森林友好的紙張品牌吧！ 5. 日常生活盡量只購買再造紙或得到森林管理委員會（FSC）認證的紙張。

如果我不向支持 APP 的企業購買產品，怎樣肯定我購買的另 一個品牌並沒有破壞森林？

7 月 16 日，在中國遼寧大連灣亦發生輸油管爆炸，引發石油洩漏。綠色和平立即調派緊急工作小組前往大連， 見證事發現場，為當地公眾提供防護設備，也為全球媒體和公眾提供最真實的第一手資訊。綠色和平已為事件對 環境的影響作出評估，並採取相關改善措施。負責此行動的統籌鍾峪現時已返回北京，作進一步的評估及跟進 工作，在她的工作日誌中，你可以了解更多當地石油洩漏的嚴重情況。

石油洩漏事件

﹁完全清理石油洩漏的污染是不可能的，任 何一次石油洩漏的危害都是長期和無法可挽 救的。因此，這次漏油事件對環境和居民生 活的長期影響還將繼續浮現。﹂ 鍾峪

石油和煤等化石燃料對環境的衝擊，不只限於燃燒發電時所產生的溫室氣體。5 月，美國一場鑽油台爆炸意外， 引致大量的原油洩漏，流入墨西哥灣，為周邊生態及居民生計帶來巨大影響。

我們分別到過六個地點視察，發現事故地點附近海灣仍看到一大片 油污，覆蓋著海水的油污厚達 10 至 20 厘米。附近的大連泊石灣海濱 浴場已經被污染，沙灘鋪了一層層稻草來吸油污。這時一個遊客走 過來對我說：「你們昨天就該來了！因為昨天我下海了，回去後渾 身都癢。這個海我是再也不會下了！」

石油洩漏所影響的不單是環境及自然 生態，更涉及人命。這是我們考察的 第一天，看見幾位消防員冒著生命危 險，在大風浪中處理被石油垃圾堵塞 的抽水泵時，其中一位消防員張良不 幸犧牲。 我們希望廣大救災人員在工作中一 定要注意安全。同時，只有類似的環 境事故不再發生，類似的悲劇才不會 重演。

石油洩漏污染更已經擴散到 35 公里外的金石灘國家旅游中心，當地 的海產養殖業深受嚴重影響。當地一萬多家海產養殖戶的貝類水產 都已遭受污染。您可以從照片中看到，其中一家養殖戶近 400 畝的 貝類養殖場由於油污入侵，其中部分貝類已經死亡，看到黑漆漆的 海產，你還敢吃下肚嗎？ 3

1. 金石灘國家旅游中心是重要的 海產養殖區，當地 10,000 多家 海產養殖戶的貝類水產都已遭 污染。 2. 大連新港，事故現場 1000 米左 右被污染的海灘。 3. 被污染的大連泊石灣海濱浴場， 在油污上鋪了一層稻草來吸油。

24 july 我們的調查隊在大連金石灘發 現，明顯的黑色油污雖然已漸 被清理，海面仍然有明顯的油 層漂浮著，但遊人依舊落海嬉 水，因此我們在海灘樹立警示 牌「油污未淨，請勿下水！」 ，提醒公眾遠離污染和避免健 康受威脅。

在大連石油洩漏事件上，我們 看到清埋油污的主力都是當地 的漁民，截至目前已有 7000 多 艘漁船參與救災撈油。但他們 沒有接受過專業清理油污培 訓，亦沒有配備基本的安全防 護設施。我們看到此情況後， 立即向清理油污人員派發 300

個活性碳口罩，防止漁民吸入原 油中的有害物質。 活性碳口罩可以較有效防止人體 吸入有害物質，我們在大連的市 場很容易就買到 300 個，希望給 予漁民提供最基本的保障，也是 我們送上的小小心意。

回到北京後，我們分別舉行了 2 次記者會，更邀請了多次直 接參與處理石油洩漏事故（包括最近墨西哥灣 BP 石油洩 漏）及環境保護工作的專家 Richard Steiner 協助評估今次的 事件。Richard 在大連待了一天半時間，他估計今次污染的 洩漏數量達到 6 萬到 9 萬噸。如果按照這個數字，已經是世 界前 30 大的石油洩漏事故之一，可見問題之嚴重性。 我們向大連市政府及相關中央政府部門的建議： ■ 全面調查漏油事件進行、公開調查結果信息 ■ 全面評估中國石油基礎設施的佈局、建立和完善石油洩 漏事件的應急處理計劃 ■ 展開環境損害評估、以及從長遠減少依賴化石能源。

後記： 從墨西哥灣到大連灣，再到接二連三的 煤礦事故，我深深感受到污染的化石燃 料對人類及環境帶來的災害。要從根本 上擺脫這類事故對於環境和安全的影 響，我們必須發展可再生能源和提高能 源使用效率，擺脫對石油、煤炭等化石 燃料的過度依賴。 最後我必須再次感謝每一位會員的月捐資助，沒有您為我 們帶來資金，我們根本不可能對緊急的環境災害作出最快 速的反應！ 再一次代表受今次意外影響的受害者感謝您！

1985 年 7 月 10 日，對於綠色和平來說是一個意義重大的日子。我們的船 艦「彩虹勇士號」被炸沉，轉眼事件已經 25 週年。

1985 年 7 月，「彩虹勇士號」前往南太 平洋穆魯羅瓦島，抗議法國擬在該區域 進行的核試驗，7月10日船停靠在紐西蘭 奧克蘭港內時，遭到法國特工安放的炸 彈襲擊而沉沒，一名隨船攝影師殉職。

由於這一事件，當時法國總統密特朗 向綠色和平正式道歉，法國政府則支 付了700 萬美元的賠償金。事件之後， 我們花了 2 年改造完成「彩虹勇士二 號」。 歷年來「彩虹勇士號」都是環境問題 見證者，包括為 2004 年南亞海嘯災民 提供救援物資，參與歷年阻止捕鯨 行動，及宣傳可再生能源的公眾活動 等。抗戰 21年，我們正打算建造一隻 全新的「彩虹勇士號」，繼續為保衛 環境而戰。

「彩虹勇士號」被炸沉 25 週年

全新的「彩虹勇士號」，將會帶來 什麼改變？ 宣揚清潔能源 – 阻截煤炭運輸和舉行活 動，提醒公眾清潔能源的重要性。 保護森林 – 追踪非法運輸木材，收集必 要的證據，以起訴有關公司及實現更嚴 格的政府法規。 保護海洋 – 「彩虹勇士號」的直昇機運 載設施，讓我們得以監察非法捕漁行為， 從而努力爭取建立海洋保護區。

綠色和平創始人與世長辭 美國自 1965 年起，就在位於阿拉斯加以西近岸的進行地下核試。

1969 年，美國在阿姆奇特卡島（Amchitka Island）進行核試，有 一萬多名示威者阻塞了美加邊境的主要通道。他們豎起寫著「別 再興風作浪了。如果地殼斷層發生變化，那都是你們惹的禍。」 的抗議標語，激起了人們反對核試的情緒。 後來 Jim Bohlen 和 Irving Stowe 與他們的妻子 Marie 和 Dorothy， 以及 Paul Cote 一起成立了名為「別興風作浪委員會」 （Don't Make A Wave Committee）的組織。目標是要駕船進入核試場「見證問 題」，阻止核爆。經過多次會議，創造出「綠色和平」這個名字， 意思是結合對地球的關注和遠離核武的期盼。他們的行動觸發了輿 論和公眾的聲援。最後美國放棄在阿姆奇特卡島進行核子試驗。

之後 Jim 繼續在綠色和平工作了好幾年後離開，在 20 世紀 80 年 代，當綠色和平重新開始反核武器的運動時，他再一次回來，指 揮反對巡航導彈測試的直接行動。

綠色和平的其中一位創始人 Jim Bohlen（1926-2010） 於 2010 年 7 月 5 日與世長辭，享年 84 歲。

當年的無心插柳，造就了今天的綠色和平，我們已在 40 多個國家 設有辦事處，在全球各國開展環保活動。

他留下了綠色和平，還有我們不變的信念──堅持以非 暴力行動，身體力行見證問題，用行動帶來改變！

你，當然已成為我們的一份子，承繼著 Jim Bohlen 以行動改變世 界的信念。

如果中國水污染繼續惡化，10 年後的今天， 情況將會如何？

我們的目標是爭取於 2020 年 前，讓中國湖泊及河流減少 50％的有毒有害物質。為正在 飲用不安全食水的 3 億中國人 民重燃希望。 這是我們的目標。您的幫助， 可以讓我們達成目標。 以下是一個有關中國未來的故事。 一個可能會嚇倒我們，又或激勵起我們的故事。因為只要我們立即行動，仍然 有機會避免這樣的情況發生。只要現在立即改變。 預計 2020 年（距離現在不過 9 年！）由於 大量有毒有害物質被排放到河流造成嚴重 水污染，同時水資源匱乏亦對清潔水源做 成壓力。有研究預測根據 2007 年廣州地 理研究所指出，由於水污染和用水不當， 廣東省於 2020 年將缺水 31 億立方米，只 相當於 2007 年用水需求的一半。

什麼是有毒有害物質？ 我們每個人的生活都離不開服裝、 食品、傢俱、玩具、化妝品和電子 產品等工業產品。這些工業產品的 生產、使用和處置過程中，很多化 學物質也不斷被釋放，其中有一類 是具有致癌性、致畸性等健康威 脅的，同時在食物鏈中可以累積。 這些有毒有害物質可以經由水、空 氣、土壤和生物體去到每個角落。 有毒有害物質一旦被釋放到環境 當中，就很難甚至不可能控制其危 害。舉例說，如果有毒有害物質通 過工業廢水排放，即使是經過了一 般污水處理廠的處理，有很大部分 的毒害影響都不能消除。 解決這種毒害的辦法極其複雜， 「先污染、後處理」的辦法將必然會 花費極高的社會和經濟成本。因此 停止有毒有害物質的生產和使用， 通過更安全的替代品或消減對這些 物質的需求，才是最有效的解決辦 法。

Q2 為何綠色和平一直要求解決有毒有害物質的問題？ 因為有毒有害物質對人類和環境帶來的代價實在難 以評估。最有效的解決方法就是從源頭開始控制。 Q3

問題可以怎樣解決？ 1. 要求生產企業在設計產品及生產過程中， 逐步減少使用有毒有害物質，並最終確保有 毒有害物質「零排放」，並以毒性較低甚至 無害的物質取代有毒有害物質的使用。 2. 要求政府部門制定整體方案，把減少、並 最終消除有毒有害物質污染作為優先目標， 同時設定明確的時間表。

舉個例子，有一類有毒有害物質叫做溴化 阻燃劑，它對人的大腦、卵巢和男性生育 等功能都有毒害。科學家們曾在北極熊的 體內發現了高濃度的 PBDEs，正是溴化 阻燃劑的一種。 為何本應該在人類工業活動密集的城市出 現的物質，會跑到北極去呢？ 因為這類物質的化學構成能夠在食物鏈中 累積傳播，那麼它們能隨著季風和洋流， 甚至藻類和魚蝦，去到北極熊體內也不足 為奇。受害者不單是北極熊，科學家們還 在挪威虎鯨的身體內發現了更多的溴化阻 燃劑、殺蟲劑和多氯聯苯。可以這樣說， 不論任何地方任何物質，都難逃有毒有害 物質的影響。

Q5 有毒有害物質怎樣進入我們的身體？ 可以以人造麝香（artificial musk）為例。

「人造麝香」是一種洗衣粉中的添加劑，當我們洗完衣服把廢水倒掉以後，人造麝 香也隨著廢水排出，有些人造麝香或者停留在泥土中，或者被最終帶到大海裡。 當水中或泥裡的生物吞下這些「人造麝香」，它們就開始在食物鏈中傳播。它們 在魚類體內也不會被分解，而是停留在魚類的脂肪中。接下來這條魚被捕獲後在 市場上出售，不久被你吃掉，人造麝香就這樣進入你的身體。 總結整個過程就是這樣：有毒有害物

Q6 我明白水體以外，日常生活很多產品一樣含有毒有害物質，那麼我們可 以如何避免有毒有害物質的影響？ 進食篇: 1. 儘量避免進食可能具有較高 汞含量的魚類 如金槍魚和鯊魚，尤其如果 你是孕婦。 2. 多吃本地的有機食品 以減少可能接觸到的農藥。 3. 少吃高動物脂肪的食品或高 脂乳製品 那些在環境中長期存在的有 毒物質集中在動物脂肪中。 4. 不要吸煙 燃點一根香煙會產生超過 4,000 種化學物質，其中許 多是有毒或致癌的。

家居篇: 1. 使用微波爐時用玻璃容器取代塑 膠容器。 2. 使用濕的拖把清潔家居 家居灰塵中可能含有一些有毒物 質如鉛，殺蟲劑和阻燃劑，乾的 掃把或抹布可能會把這些含有有 害物質的灰塵揚起在空氣中。 3. 回家後更換鞋子 鞋可能將殺蟲劑和有毒的化學物 質帶入家中。 4. 儘量避免乾洗衣服 大多數乾洗系統使用的是全氯乙 烯（PERC）等乾洗劑，它會殘留 在乾洗好的衣服上。 5. 裝修時儘量使用不含揮發性有機 化合物（VOC）的材料，或使用水 基材料。

Q4 據說連北極熊及鯨魚身上都可找到有毒有 害物質？ 對。因為有毒有害物質的性質非常穩定， 一旦進入空氣、水或者土壤，自然界難以 形成足夠應對它們的環境。

行動代號： 「北冰洋危機」之旅 行動日期：

考察將分為兩個階段，第一階段 從 5 月 27日至 6 月 4 日，第二階段 從 7 月 6 日至 7 月 12 日。

綠色和平、德國海洋科學研究所 （IFM-GEOMAR） 、中國廈門大學等 11 個科研院所在內共 35 位科學家 綠色和平「希望號」協助科學家們 把 9 個巨大的生態實驗儀器 （Mesocosms） 投入海中，儀器內有 不同濃度的二氧化碳，模擬未來海 洋酸化情況。根據此結果科學家們 就可以取得浮游生物對不同酸度值 的反應並作出分析。最早在今年年 底有結果出現。

再闖北極 探索海洋危機 2010 年 5 月底，綠色和平「希望號」（Esperanza）科學考察船起錨離 港，向北極地區航行，這是繼去年綠色和平中國派員前往北極地區考 察冰川融化之後再次出征，見證環境危機下的北極地區。 今次航行的目的是為了記錄海洋酸化 對海洋的影響。我們中國分部的同事 鄭明清已於7月底返回北京，我們第一 時間訪問了他，更為各會員帶來團隊 在北極拍下的美麗照片。 什麼是「海洋酸化」？ 過去幾百萬年，海洋都是略帶鹼性 的，所有海洋生物都是經過進化才能 適應這種酸鹼度。 但當我們燃燒化石燃料（例如煤）的時 候，就會排出數以十億噸計的二氧化

碳，這是引致氣候變化的溫室氣體， 而約 1/4 溫室氣體最終會被海洋所分 解，導致海洋酸化。 每年海洋吸收大約 80 億噸來自人類燃 燒化石能源而產生的二氧化碳，體積 相當於約15 萬個杭州西湖大小！ 海洋酸性加重，不僅改變全球海洋的 化學成分，而且將使海洋生態系統面 臨崩潰威脅。酸性海水會令貝殼類生 物、珊瑚、浮游生物及整個海洋生態 死亡，導致魚量銳減。

G：Greenpost 鄭：鄭明清 G：這次考察活動被命名為「北冰洋危機」，為什麼會選擇北冰 洋來進行此次研究呢？ 鄭：因為海洋化學成分的變化在冷水中要比在暖水中更明顯。 G：為何綠色和平選擇海洋酸化這個題材作研究? 鄭：海洋酸化的加重，不僅將改變全球海洋的化學成分，而且 將使得海洋生態系統面臨崩潰的威脅。例如實驗過程中我們嘗 試將「尖菱蝶螺」 （sea butterfly）放入不同酸度的海水中，發現 酸化會令它們不育。「尖菱蝶螺」是海洋不少生物的食物， 可見海洋酸化長遠會影響食物鏈，人類的食物來源亦同樣會受 影響。 在這次北極考察之旅前，我們所有進行的科學實驗都是在實驗 室內進行的，並且只研究了酸化對單個有機體的影響。像這次 在自然條件下調查酸化對生物群體影響的實驗以前尚未做過， 所以我們稱之為有史以來最為全面的海洋酸化實驗。 G：可否總結一下航程中有何重要發現？ 鄭：海洋酸化國際項目首席科學家 Ulf Riebesell表示，這次的實 驗非常成功，科研人員將把考察中得到的標本各自帶回研究， 並於今年12月在德國總結研究成果。 有一點可以肯定的是，通過今次試驗，科學家們初步確認了海 洋酸化正在對北極海域的食物鏈產生影響的事實，而且海洋酸 化會進一步影響到整個北極生態系統的安全。

Which tiger?

This campaign is about the Sumatran Tiger (pantera tigris sumatrae).

Why is this campaign about the Sumatran tiger and not about breeds of tiger in China?

China’s wild tigers are better protected than those in Indonesia.

Where do they live?

Exclusively on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Sumatran Tigers are only found in 12 isolated forest pockets. If you add up all the areas together it’s about the size of two Belgiums.

How many are left?

Around 500 animals. And falling.

Why are there so few?

The key reason is loss of forest. Up to 5.9% of the forests they live in are being hacked down every year according to the IUCN. Who is destroying the forests?

Sinar Mas, an Indonesian conglomerate, and its subsidiary Asia Pulp and Paper (APP). They chop down the forests and peatlands where the tigers live to produce pulp and paper and for palm oil plantations. The paper is used for everything from magazines to toilet paper.

Why should we save the tiger?

Tigers are beautiful and brave. They are the product of thousands of years of evolution. We share this planet with the animals around us. And what a miserable world we would live in if we have to kill off species just to manufacture toilet paper. Forests need tigers just as much as tigers need forests. Help us save the Tiger in the Year of the Tiger.

HOW APP IS PULPING THE PLANET… …AND TRASHING THE TIGER Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) is the world’s fourth largest pulp and paper company (and Indonesia’s largest). It is owned by Sinar Mas, an Indonesian conglomerate.

As well as paper, Sinar Mas is involved in coal and palm oil plantations.

APP has two big main paper mills on Sumatra.

From the rainforest…

This wouldn’t be a problem if APP only cut down wood from existing plantations.

But it doesn’t. A major proportion of its wood comes from rainforests and carbon-rich peatlands. And it plans to lobby the Indonesian government to allow it to clear even more forest.

This mill produces 2.2 million tonnes of paper a year, that’s almost half of China’s coated fine paper production (glossy paper used in leaflets and magazines). From here it’s used in China and exported around the world and we buy it in the form of magazines, tissues and toilet paper in our supermarkets.

APP is killing the climate as well as the tigers When APP logs rainforests and carbon-rich peatlands it is not only destroying the tigers’ home it is producing massive amounts of climate – killing greenhouse gases.

Why APP?

Because APP is the biggest threat to the Sumatran Tiger.

Because APP can’t be trusted. It says it will go 100% sustainable but it is actively seeking and developing new concessions.

Because APP’s actions in Sumatra are killing the climate.

WHO IS PROPPING UP APP? The bad guys Lots of companies buy paper products from APP or stock brands that contain paper made by APP. You might be surprised at a few of the names. Here are they are: Walmart*, Paperlinx, WHSmith, Corporate Express, Hewlett Packard, Auchan*, KFC*, Chinese National Geographic*,CNN Traveler, Cosmo*, Cosmo Girl*, Elle*, Esquire*, Marie Claire* *Sold in China

The good guys Because of Greenpeace campaigns, a lot of companies that used to do business with Sinar Mas have now stopped.

These are just a few of the companies and organisations that have recently ditched Sinar Mas and/or APP: Rainforest Alliance :”we do not wish to be used by APP again in order to mislead the public and the consumers”.

We lobby Sinar Mas and APP customers Greenpeace and its supporters have used social media, spoof ads, and media pressure to successfully convince big companies like Unilever and Nestlé to stop doing business with Sinar Mas and APP. One of the latest wins was in May after we targeted Nestlé over its Kitkat brand (it uses palm oil bought from Sinar Mas). Nestlé finally agreed to only source from sustainable palm oil sources, in other words not from Sinar Mas.

3. We pressure the supermarkets In China we want to stop supermarkets from stocking tiger-killing brands. So earlier this summer three Greenpeace activists dressed up as Sumatran tigers and protested outside a branch of Auchan supermarket in Beijing. We wanted to tell customers not buy Breeze toilet paper (owned by APP) and ask the supermarket not to stock Breeze or any other APP products. Tesco and Carrefour in China said they would stop buying APP products for their store brands either immediately or by the end of the year.

Our emissions of carbon dioxide threaten to alter the very chemistry of sea water and change life in our oceans within the span of a single human lifetime. Greenpeace sailed to the North Pole this summer to investigate.

What is Ocean Acidification?

When we burn fossil fuels (like coal) we release carbon dioxide. This is the main gas that causes climate change but huge amounts of it are also absorbed by the ocean. When it dissolves it turns the oceans acidic.

With time, our oceans are becoming more acidic. That’s not good news for all the animals and plants that live in the ocean because they have evolved to live in non-acidic seawater. Many marine species may simply die as the oceans turn acidic,

devastating fish stocks around the world and destroying the whole balance of nature: Another reason why we should stop using fossil fuels and put all our efforts into developing state-of-the-art clean green renewable energy.

Our scientists on this expedition set up giant test-tubes in Svalbard called mesocosms to see what acidic marine environments will do to plankton and other marine life. They are now examining the results back in Germany. Keep checking our website to read about their discoveries.

Meet Dr. Zheng Mingqing Zheng Mingqing boarded the Esperanza in June and helped out with the experiments at Svalbard.

Dr. Zheng is Greenpeace China’s climate and energy campaigner and is based in Beijing.

Q: Why the Arctic for this expedition?

A: The effects of ocean acidification are more evident in cold water.

Q: How can we stop ocean acidification?

A: The answer is simple. Stop burning coal and other fossil fuels because they are the key cause of ocean acidification. China now is the world’s biggest emitter of carbon dioxide and so we need China to play a crucial part in reducing carbon dioxide emissions both to stop climate change and to stop ocean acidification.

Q: What did the scientists find out and when will we be able to get the full results?

A: Initial results show that ocean acidification is already having an impact on the food chain of marine life in the Arctic. Full results are expected in December.

Q: Why is Greenpeace investigating ocean acidification?

A: Ocean acidification doesn’t just mean that the ocean is more acidic, it also means that the entire marine ecosystem is seriously threatened and that includes fish stocks that millions of people rely on. In our Arctic experiment we saw that pteropods (a beautiful translucent animal also known as a sea butterfly) became sterile in an acidic ocean water environment. An acidic ocean may cause the mass extinction of many marine species. It could be a global disaster so that it why we are researching it now.

Black sadness:

On July 16 this year disaster struck China’s port city of Dalian. Two oil pipelines and a storage tank belonging to the State-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) exploded. Flames seared the sky, thousands of tons spread to the Yellow Sea choking all life in its wake including a firefighter who was drowned trying to clean up the spill. A Greenpeace photographer unknowingly captured his final images. Firefighter Zhang Liang was only 25 years old.

The slick eventually spread to an area larger than 180 square km.

With their bare hands After the blast, Greenpeace immediately sent an emergency team to the site. We were horrified to see workers assigned to the clean up with no protective gear. In some cases people were using their bare hands to clean up the spill. Protective gear is essential -- suits, boots, masks and gloves – because crude oil has many toxic chemicals many of which are carcinogenic and they can be absorbed through the skin.

Many workers had to go to hospital suffering from skin and respiratory problems and nausea.

Greenpeace rushed to put up signs on beaches to warn visitors not to swim and contacted the local government to urge them to do the same and urgently provide protective gear for the cleanup workers.

A dirty clean-up Less than two weeks after the initial blasts, the local government says the clean-up operation was a success.

Greenpeace brought in Alaskan marine conservationist and oil spill expert Rick Steiner. While he was amazed and impressed at the incredible effort made by local people to scoop up oil he says the cleanup is far from over and questioned the government’s figures on the size of the spill.

The government says 1,500 tons were spilled but the numbers just don’t add up. Because the oil storage tank which exploded contained about 90,000 tons it’s much more likely that at least a slick of 60,000 tons was released (some of the oil burned).

After his investigation Mr. Steiner wrote a six-point recommendation report which Greenpeace gave to the government.

Here’s what he said: 1. Be open and honest about disaster information. This did not happen in Dalian.

2. Do a risk assessment of all oil infrastructure.

3. Draw up an oil spill response plan and provide safety gear to all cleanup workers.

4. Assess the environmental damage of this spill. No evidence so far that this will happen.

5. Improve laws on oil spills including liability.

6. Put more money into clean safe renewable forms of energy. This oil spill is just more evidence that fossil fuels ultimately spell disaster.

The city also has one of the highest vehicle densities in the world, averaging 315 cars per kilometer of road.

Greenpeace protests against company ‘wiping out’ tigers

A protest held by the Greenpeace, called “Save the Tiger, Refuse Breeze”, took place at the north Chaoyang branch of the French supermarket chain Auchan.

Protestors were trying to stop the supermarket from buying and selling toilet paper and other paper products sourced from Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), part of the Sinar Mas group, which they say contributes to deforestation and endangers scarce Sumatran tigers.
