親愛的會員， 眼看 12 月的哥本哈根氣候談判大會一天天臨近了， 我的同事們真可謂是上天入地，各顯神通，全為促使 各國首腦為人類和地球交上一份令人滿意的答案。

另一方面，綠色和平已經為保護亞馬遜雨林奮鬥了 整整10年。最近又有喜訊傳來，《被屠宰的亞馬遜》 報告發佈之後不久，巴西超市協會就宣佈暫停購買 來自毀林地區的牛肉製品；國際金融公司撤回了對 其中一個毀林企業的貸款；運動品牌 Nike 和便服鞋 品牌 Timberland 也於近日要求其供應商停止購買造 成毀林的牛皮。

Dear Greenpeace supporters, The United Nations climate change negotiations at Copenhagen are fast approaching. We are all working like crazy here to make sure that heads of state in the Danish capital make the right decision and save us and the earth from climate disaster.

In the Arctic, our Greenpeace ship, “The Arctic Sunrise” has been collecting evidence of melting glaciers.

Worryingly, we discovered that a chunk of ice the same size as Hong Kong island is about to break off the Petermann glacier because of global warming.

Greenpeace is using this kind of compelling evidence to push governments to make effective cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions at the meeting.

On another note, Greenpeace has just celebrated 10 years of battling to save the Amazon rainforest. Just recently, we’ve had some more good news. Not long after our report “Slaughtering the Amazon” was published, the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets announced it would no longer buy beef products from cattle grazed on illegally deforested land; the International Finance Corporation said it was withdrawing a US$90 million loan to Bertin, a leather and beef supplier, that we have evidence sources its cattle from ranches on illegally-deforested land; and sportswear giants Nike and Timberland announced new standards for making sure their leather did not come from Amazon-destructive sources.

在北京，我們和樂施會一起發佈《氣候變化與貧困》 報告，指出 95% 的中國絕對貧困人口已經成為氣候 變化的最大受害者。在香港，我們亦發起 9 月 22 日 的「無車日」，呼籲公眾少開一天車，多步行或承 搭交通工具，以減少溫室氣體排放。

Back in Beijing, we published a “Climate Change and Poverty” report with Oxfam. Our research revealed that 95% of people living in absolute poverty in China are also suffering from the effects of climate change. In Hong Kong, we have already started preparations for September 22nd’s “Car Free Day”. On this day we are asking people to walk or take public transport to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

不得不提的還有針對八國峰會的全球行動：在意大 利，我們的 100 多名義工封鎖了 5 家煤電廠，要求 減少燃煤發電；在俄羅斯，我們在克里姆林宮上投 影呼籲；在美國，我們爬上總統山借以往各偉大 總統之口督促奧巴馬；在巴黎，一座真實大小的冰 山漂浮到塞納——馬恩省河上；在巴西總統領取聯 合國教科文組織獎項時，我們亦送他一個融化的地 球。當然，最重要的，是我們於香港政府大樓，通 緝氣候逃犯特首曾蔭權！這些行動，就是要讓領導 人們在壓力下無處遁形，直接面對公眾對停止氣候 變化的訴求。

I have to mention Greenpeace’s activities at the G8 this year. In Italy, more than 100 of our activists blockaded five coal-fired power plants to demand that the world stop using coal; in Russia we projected a climate message on a wall near the Kremlin; in Paris we floated a life-sized iceberg along the Seine river near the Eiffel Tower; also in Paris we presented an inflatable globe to Brazilian President Lula; and in the US we rappelled down the face of Mount Rushmore to unfurl a banner urging President Obama to act on climate change. Here in Hong Kong we also unfurled a banner calling the chief executive a climate fugitive in a bid to get the government to start taking action on climate change.

我說了這麼多，最後也最想說的就是——謝謝您。 一位大陸的朋友得知綠色和平做這麼多事情都是靠 個人捐款來支持時，驚訝地說：「我真想看看在香 港的支持者，他們是多麼偉大，為保護環境貢獻他 們的力量！」

什麼是哥本哈根會議？ 1997 年，《京都議定書》 為解決氣候變化踏出重要 的第一步。但是，目前 《京都議定書》的減排協議 將於 2012 年屆滿，於是 《聯合國氣候變化框架公 約》在 2007 年於峇里定下 為期兩年的談判計劃，目 標於今年年底舉行的哥本 哈根會議，決定 2012 之後 的全球減排協議。

每年夏天，香港都會響起酷熱警告，如果雪糕、風扇都不能令你解暑的話，不如將眼光放到北極吧！ 不過且慢⋯⋯照片中的景象，預計將於不久的將來消失。試想一下，沒有了冰川、沒有了海冰，我們腦海中的北極舊模樣將不復存在。

航程首站：格陵蘭彼得曼冰川 彼得曼冰川是格陵蘭最大及最北的冰川，根據我們的科學家團隊在整個北極旅程中，收 集得到的冰川融化資料並不樂觀：在距離北冰洋 27 公里的冰川上，融化的冰水已經形成 一條大河。科學家估計河流流量約每秒 50 立方米。（用這種速度計算，原來要填滿一個 奧運會用的標準游泳池也不用 1 分鐘！）同時水流亦會加速冰川的融化。加上在 60 米深 的冰川中，科學家發現水份中鹽份含量較高，表示來自大西洋溫暖的海洋環流加速冰川 底層的融化。這些因素令我們估計冰川倒塌時間比預期來得更快。 其實冰川倒塌的場面，不時看紀錄片也看得到，實際上又有什麼影響？大家可以想像， 這麼大面積的冰川數以噸計地傾入大海，意味全球水位將進一步上升；同時對於格陵蘭 來說，裂開的地方等於一個缺口，令內陸上更多的冰塊受溫暖洋流影響而融化，造成惡 性循環。我們擔心最終格陵蘭上的冰川都會傾倒入海，造成不可挽救的海平面上升。 根據美國太空總署最近的研究，極地的冰蓋不單愈來愈少，更愈來愈薄及「年輕」。 04 至 08 年的資料更顯示冰蓋變得愈來愈薄；雖然一些凍結超過 2 年以上的冰蓋會較難融 化，但數量已經少之有少。科學家預計最快到 2030 年，北極就會過一個「無冰之夏」。

北極熊的憂慮 既然熱力叫遠在香港的我們都感受到氣候變化的嚴峻，北極熊自然不能倖免！ 北極熊的生存離不開北極的冰雪。儘管它們都是游泳高手，但是它們的捕食和 遷徙活動都要依靠海冰。近年來，北冰洋的冰塊快速消失，在一些極地區域， 每年的海冰季節已縮減至只得 3 星期，而科學家在 2005 年更發現極地冰蓋正 在以超過 100 萬平方里的驚人速度消失，面積相等於一個科羅拉多州。更有一 些氣候變化的預測指，北冰洋會於 2050 年全部溶化。

送你去哥本哈根 見證氣候大會！ 北極的冰層融化、北極熊瀕臨滅絕，都是氣候變化的結果，而其 根本成因正是人類燃燒化石燃料所排放二氧化碳等溫室氣體。因 此，綠色和平呼籲各國立即採取行動，改革我們的能源結構以減 緩氣候變化！ 綠色和平今次走在最前，將這災難性的一刻紀錄下來，就是要 向全球的領袖發出警告，氣候變化不容忽視。各國元首應當在今 年底舉行的哥本哈根會議上，採取果斷的決定，減少溫室氣體排

拯 救 亞 馬 遜 在地球上應該找不到另一個亞馬遜，因為這

亞馬遜的重要功能就是調節降雨及吸收二氧 化碳，防止它被釋放到大氣中。據估計亞馬 遜森林儲存了的二氧化碳量為人類年度排放 量 10 倍或以上。但事實上，近年大規模的 森林砍伐，釋放大量的二氧化碳進入大氣， 正不斷加劇氣候變化。 森林砍伐間接加劇氣候變化，同樣地，氣候 變化亦加速亞馬遜的死亡。科學家預測只要 攝氏 2 度的升溫，已足以改變亞馬遜森林的 命運。 今年年底在哥本哈根舉行的氣候變化大會， 將是拯救亞馬遜森林的最好機會。而保護亞 馬遜森林就是穩定氣候的重要一環，因此各

企業品牌紛紛回應 綠色和平早於 10 年前已在巴西馬瑙斯市這個亞馬遜雨林的心臟地帶設立辦公室，以進行保護 亞馬遜的工作。2009 年，是綠色和平在亞馬遜展開工作的 10 周年，也是拯救亞馬遜的最好 機會。 以下的成果正代表我們的行動及研究報告，已帶動各大企業品牌紛紛以行動來回應保護亞馬 遜森林的重任。 ■ 我們曾與支持者一起成功推動快餐連鎖店「麥當勞」，同意拒絕購買來自巴西亞馬遜地區

貧窮人口要面對的問題有幾多？

包括缺少經濟支持、生活質素下降、激發家庭衝突等 等⋯⋯你可能通通想像得到！ 不過原來還有一項很少人注意到的，就是氣候變化！

氣候與貧窮問題，看似毫無關係，但在中國，為數不少 的貧困人口仍然分佈在生態環境極脆弱的地區，在氣候 變化影響之下，這些地區的民眾不僅難以脫貧，即使短 暫脫貧之後，又因為氣候變化影響而再度返貧，嚴重阻 礙了中國的扶貧工作，更令中國解決貧困問題的目標實 現被無限期拖延。 我們嘗試從新的角度瞭解氣候、瞭解貧窮。我們跟「樂 施會」共同發佈《氣候變化與貧困》報告，是中國第一 份從氣候變化的角度審視中國貧困問題的研究報告。 可幸的是，只要立即行動，我們都可以為貧窮人口改善 生活。

「眾所周知，21世紀人類最大的挑戰是 全球氣候變化，人類最大的威脅是氣候 貧困人口，人類發展的最大任務是 需要不斷減少氣候貧困人口。」 胡鞍鋼 經濟學家

中國的貧困縣所處區域大多近海多颱風、內陸多寒潮、西北多沙漠、南方雨多泥石流多，以及河流雨季洪水多的特點。全國不論內陸或 沿海，都被氣候變化困擾著。我們走訪了中國甘肅永靖、四川馬邊以及廣東陽山等 3 個因受氣候變化影響的典型貧困縣進行了分析，通過 案例表明：氣候變化正在影響這些地區的糧食生產、用水條件、房屋設施、牲畜養殖等基本生活生計，造成了外出移民和返貧等後果。

6月23日，我們到香港政府 總部西翼天台游繩而下，掛 起一張 20 米高乘 7.5 米闊的 橫額，譴責特首沒有回應當 前的氣候危機，也拒絕為香 港定下溫室氣體減排目標， 任由氣候變化加劇。 中國 7月28日，我們在北京一家 發電廠前展開橫額，呼籲大 型電力集團加入「拯救氣候」 行動，同日發佈的《中國發 電集團氣候影響排名》報 告，顯示中國電力行業對煤 炭的過度依賴，而且單計於 2008年中國 3 家發電公司二 氧化碳總排放量的總和，已 經超越英國的年排放總量， 阻礙中國應對氣候變化。 美國 7 月 8 日，我們來到美國著名 的總統山國家公園，並在 林肯總統的雕像旁展示一幅 長約 18 米並配有美國總統 奧巴馬畫像的巨大橫額，敦 促在意大利參加 G8 會議的 奧巴馬實現其所承諾的氣候 領導力。 法國 7 月 7 日，我們於巴黎著名的 艾菲爾鐵塔前，把一座真實 大小的冰山漂浮到塞納河 上，展示氣候變化所帶來的 災難性影響。 意大利

All About Climate Change...

We are now into the last quarter of the year of climate change. For Greenpeace it is the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen in December that has become the defining issue for 2009. This edition of Greenpost reflects this focus and is devoted to updating you on what we have been doing to make sure governments make a planet-saving deal in Copenhagen. Thanks to your support we have celebrated 10 years of saving the Amazon (page 17) – a forest key to saving the climate, funded a key science research trip to the Arctic (page 20) to present evidence of climate change and staged peaceful actions around July’s meeting of G8 nations and similar actions in Hong Kong and Beijing (page 22).

But what do we want governments to do at Copenhagen? What does saving the climate mean in the black and white of international deals?

In a nutshell we are asking developed countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent (over 1990 levels), developing countries to cut their emissions from business as usual by 15-30 percent by 2020 (this includes China) and for developed countries to put money into a fund (about US$140 billion a year) to stop deforestation.

1. Developed countries, as a group, must reduce emissions by at least 40% by 2020 (compared to 1990 levels). At least three quarters of these reductions must be achieved domestically.

In order to meet this timescale, developed countries as a group must agree reductions of 23% in the next round of cuts (2013-2017).

2. Developing countries must reduce their projected emissions growth by 15-30% by 2020, with support from industrialised countries (and that includes China).

3. A funding mechanism must be established to stop deforestation and associated emissions in all developing countries by 2020, with key areas (Amazon, Congo Basin, Paradise Forests) achieving zero deforestation by 2015. THE AMAZING AMAZON There is nothing like the Amazon anywhere else on earth. Around 55 million years old, it spans nine countries and comprises almost 7 million square kilometres of rainforest, five percent of the Earth’s surface. It is the largest intact rainforest we have left on the planet.

It is also the most bio-diverse region in the world. The Amazon water lily is the biggest flower in the world with a diameter of two metres. The Caranguejeira spider is bigger than a baseball and one species of monkey weighing 130 grams is about the size of a toothbrush.

The Amazon is also home to 57 endangered species including the jaguar.

The jaguar population was all but wiped out by hunting for the fur trade before it was designated a protected species. Even now, virtually nothing is known about the jaguars’ lifestyle.

It’s estimated around two-thirds of trees logged are felled illegally.

Some 60% of the Amazon basin is within Brazil’s borders. The region is also home to approximately 22 million people – among whom, over 200,000 are indigenous people, belonging to 180 different groups. The rainforest provides them with everything – from food and shelter to tools and medicines – and is central to the spiritual life of the indigenous peoples.

The Amazon is a breathtaking series of interconnected eco-systems, finely tuned as a result of millions of years of evolution. It is also essential to the health of our planet.

FIGHT FOR THE FOREST If current rates of deforestation continue the Amazon will be gone within fifty years.

One fifth of the Amazon has already gone forever.

The range of plant and animal species in the Amazon remains largely unknown. Scientists estimate that only 40 percent of all insect species have so far been identified. Over 300,000 species of plants have been identified, but an estimated 20,000 remain undiscovered. In the 1990s alone, seven species of monkeys, two species of birds and dozens of species of frogs and fish have been discovered.

This year marks a decade that Greenpeace have been battling to save the Amazon. And now, with the Copenhagen climate conference almost upon us, the forests represent more than ever a chance to save the world and ourselves.

Forest destruction fuels climate change and ultimately climate change threatens our ability to survive on our planet. While government negotiators hammer out a deal for forests at the climate change summit in Copenhagen this year, remember they are in effect hammering out a deal on how to protect us and those we hold dear. It’s that important. It’s that urgent.

Greenpeace has been working on the ground for a decade to protect the Amazon. This year’s climate summit in Copenhagen is our best chance ever to save our forests.

At the moment deforestation is responsible for releasing about 20% of the world’s carbon emissions, more than the total emissions from the United States or from the world’s entire transport sector.

“Let’s take a look at the three main industries responsible for deforestation, and what Greenpeace is doing to save the world’s largest tropical forest.”

WHAT IS DRIVING THE DESTRUCTION? INDUSTRIAL LOGGING: around two-thirds of this type of logging are estimated to be illegal; it is also extremely wasteful with only one third of the logged wood ending up in the final product.

CATTLE RANCHING: almost 80% of deforested land is used to raise cattle; Brazil has become one of the world’s largest meat and leather exporters.

SOYA PLANTATIONS: a 2006 Greenpeace investigation exposed the seemingly unstoppable expansion of soya farming into the world´s largest rainforest to satisfy spiralling demand for animal feed in Europe and China. Due to Greenpeace campaigning soya traders announced a moratorium on buying soya grown on newly-deforested land but some farmers are still making new plantations

AMAZON SUCCESSES IN 2009

SAVING THE AMAZON: ZERO DEFORESTATION AND FORESTS FOR THE CLIMATE

Greenpeace has calculated that this fund needs to be around US$35 billion a year and would be paid for by industrialised nations.

Payments would be based on the proportion of a country’s own carbon pollution. The more they pollute, the more they pay. This would be separate and in addition to their own efforts to reduce their carbon emissions.

This ‘Forest for Climate’ fund would make it more economically viable for countries like Brazil and Indonesia to protect their forests rather than allow them to be destroyed and it would pay for better monitoring and enforcement of forest protection laws.

In order to save the Amazon, Greenpeace is fighting for zero deforestation by 2015. A key way to achieve zero deforestation is for governments to agree to a ‘Forests for Climate’ funding scheme for all tropical forests, which we want to see agreed to at the Climate Summit at Copenhagen in December 2009.

ARCTIC ADVENTURE

In this year of Copenhagen, this year when a global decision will be made on what to do to stop climate change, Greenpeace must use every means possible to demonstrate that time is running out. One of the best ways is to document the irrefutable signs of global warming. And the Poles are where climate change first rears its ugly destructive head.

So this summer the Arctic Sunrise set sail further north than any Greenpeace ship has yet sailed to capture the melting of glaciers along the coast of Greenland. On board were scientists, photographer extraordinaire Nick Cobbing and Greenpeace activists including Greenpeace China’s own Yu Xin (better known as Fish).

SECOND AND THIRD STAGES

The first leg of the expedition took us to 82 degrees north and the Petermann glacier – the largest floating glacier in the northern hemisphere – where the scientists monitored a giant crack which is threatening to break off a chunk of ice the size of Hong Kong island.

While Fish has come back home to Beijing, the Arctic Sunrise continues its voyage. On leg two, the Arctic Sunrise will coast around East Greenland to take measurements on the Kangerlussuaq glacier. Back in 2005, scientists working with Greenpeace discovered that this glacier was moving at three times its speed 10 years earlier. Its speed is a measure of how serious climate change is progressing.

The Arctic Sunrise will return to the glacier to find out how fast it is moving today.

The data collected was grim. We found a river had formed on the glacier which is running at about 50 cubic metres per second – you could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in less than a minute at that rate. We also measured the salinity of the water at about 60m deep and we found that warm ocean currents from the Atlantic were causing the glacier to melt even faster.

FIRST STAGE

In September it will plow even further north to reach the edge of the ice cap and measure the rate of decline of Arctic sea ice.

Scientists on board will be measuring pressure ridges. These are mini-mountain ranges formed when ice floes grind into each other. These pressure ridges are prime polar bear habitat. The Arctic Sunrise is scheduled to finish her mission on September 30.

When chunks of ice break off the glacier, more of the land-based part of the glacier could slip into the sea water which would open the way for the release of frozen fresh water, from the vast ice sheet that covers most of Greenland, into the ocean.

This would cause a devastating rise in sea levels. This is climate change out of control.

FROM THE ARCTIC TO COPENHAGEN We want governments to sit up and notice. The evidence is piling up thick and fast. Climate change is happening now. Our Arctic Sunrise crew saw it happening faster than ever thought in Greenland. And unless our leaders made a strong effective deal in December then there is a huge risk it will be happening faster than we could ever have feared across the rest of the globe. How can we let that happen?

Polar bears have become the symbol of climate change. Nick Cobbing took some stunning shots on board the Arctic Sunrise. But these magnificent animals are one of the first victims of climate change. As the ice melts, the polar bears’ food sources and home disappears. But it’s not just polar bears. It’s all of us. Our homes and our children and our food that will, in the decades to come, be threatened by climate change unless our governments do something NOW.

It’s governments that have the final say. They are the ones who have the power to go into crucial UN climate meetings in December and make a deal to save our planet.

It’s our role to push them, to tell them we love our planet, we care about our children’s future, and we need to stop climate change.

Here’s a quick global overview of what Greenpeace has been doing to show leaders that climate change is the single most important issue on their agendas.

MOUNT RUSHMORE, USA: Greenpeace climbers rappel down Mount Rushmore to unfurl a banner challenging President Barack Obama to show leadership on global warming as G8 leaders met in Italy.

HONG KONG Greenpeace activists are arrested in June after they hang a giant banner calling Chief Executive Donald Tsang a climate fugitive. Hong Kong still refuses to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
