Over the next three years we need to examine China’s current development model and how we can stimulate changes to that to ease these environmental crises.

to move towards clean production We firmly believe that climate change is the crucial issue now. One of our key campaigns within this is exposing the dangers of using coal. And we will also be urging the Chinese government to take a leading role at international climate change negotiations at Copenhagen in December.

We want China to make it more economical to massively develop the renewable energy sector and to stop using so much coal.

We also want the government to tighten its laws on industrial water pollution and for factories to start upgrading towards a clean production model.

This will not be easy. We need to be patient. We need to be determined.

But we have made amazing victories.

And it is only with your crucial support that we have achieved so much.

And, thanks to you, we can do it again.

2008 年，新聞大事特別多，甚至可稱得上是群雄割據，風起雲湧......國際局勢、財經、娛樂、 體育各有值得茶餘飯後討論的經典大事。在09年 Greenpost首次跟各會員見面，就數數我們於 08 年的十件大事。

Apr May

4 月，發佈最新的《避免基 因改造食物指南 2008》，讓 公眾避免購買含基因改造成 份的食物品牌。新承諾的品 牌包括百威、哈爾濱啤酒、 首選牌及超值牌。

成功推動最大的棕櫚油 消耗商聯合利華於作出承 諾，在 2015 年前確保旗 下產品所使用的棕櫚油全 部經過認證，並立刻停止 在東南亞破壞熱帶雨林和 泥炭地的行為。

6 月，我們以直接行動截 停裝有有毒電子垃圾的貨 櫃，迫使香港政府扣查該 貨櫃，及就事件與我們討 論現時管制電子垃圾進出 口的法律漏洞。

7 月，發布環境評估報告《超 越北京，超越 2008》，以評 定北京奧運的環境情況，並期 望是次奧運會能成為中國城市 改善環境的起點。

4月底，《企業污染物信息 公開狀況調查》揭露，13家 跨國公司在污染物排放信息 公開方面，對中國實行了雙 重標準，我們要求企業公平 對待中國環境，全面地公佈 他們的排污資訊。

5 月12日的四川大地震後， 我們緊急成立工作組，並走 訪了地震重災區的 60 多個鄉 鎮，100 多家化工廠，通過 提前預警，防止了多次可能 的爆炸和洩漏事件。

我們的

啟動《愛書人 愛森林》行動，推 動作家及出版業使用「森林友好 型」紙張，並邀得 12 位本地作者 及非政府組織「三十會」承諾日後 印刷時使用「森林友好型」紙張。 並同時首次以香港書展作平台，宣 揚保護原始森林的信息。

9 月，綠色和平成員登上環保署位於中環的 路邊空氣質素監測站，不滿環保署沿用過時 及過於寬鬆的指標計算空氣污染指數，並要 求政府以世衛標準為指標，儘快修訂空氣質 素指標。

10 月，發佈《氣候變化與中國糧 食安全》的報告，指出受氣候變 化影響，中國滿足自己糧食需求 的能力將在 20 年後無法得到保 證，因此生態農業有助應對氣候 變化帶來的威脅。

12 月，我們多名工作人員及志願 者出席在波蘭波茲南舉行的聯 合國氣候會議，推動各國積極合 作，達成二氧化碳減排協議，並 同時減少對煤的依賴。

2009 年之始，最吸引你的目光也許不離金融海嘯 下的經濟衝擊，幸而奧巴馬上任美國總統，也為 氣候形勢帶來積極的意義，我們絕對有可能同時 解決地球兩大最嚴峻的危機。 尚有不足9個月，人類要為我們的氣候寫下定論， 綠色和平氣候與能源項目主任李雁，早前遠赴波 蘭波茲南舉行的聯合國氣候會議擔當觀察員，帶 你走入備受多重沖擊下的波茲南大會及將於年底 舉行的哥本哈根會議。

哥本哈根大會 日期：2009 年12月7日-18日 (即尚餘約 300 天 !) 目的：為《京都議定書》第 二階段制定明確方案，包括 發達國家同意，到 2020 年 溫室氣體排放需比1990年的 水平減少 30-40%

發展中國家承諾加強具體的 行動以減少溫室氣體排放， 如定下可再生能源目標 建立支援發展中國家採取 行動的氣候資金機制，以及 向發展中國家提供環保清潔 技術支援、以及減少排放 的技術轉讓機制。

制定出森林融資機制，讓富 有森林資源的國家，能夠減 少森林砍伐，降低全球因森 林砍伐導致的溫室氣體排放

我現在於綠色和平氣候與能源項目中從事氣候政策工作， 大量青春消耗在不見天日的國際氣候談判會場內，跟決議、 草案打交道。「觀察員」的生活究竟怎麼樣呢？首次到德國 參加為期兩周的聯合國氣候談判會議時，頭腦和體能都遭遇 到前所未有的挑戰，對於漫天飛舞的英文縮寫、章節號等術 語不得其門而入，感覺十分糟糕。後來慢慢了解字紙背後的 目的，原來在氣候談判中每個國家都是在為自己的利益空間 唇槍舌劍，誰真正關心氣候災難什麼時候來臨？

於以下幾個有關氣候的談判重點，各國又可達成一致的協議 嗎？

但慨嘆完畢，工作還要繼續。經過峇里會議的洗禮，我終於 明白，正因為在談判這個利益交錯的戰場裡，真正保護氣候

1. 自身減排目標

2. 「資金」和「技術」

但在波茲南，人們感受更多的是希望。

波茲南大會主席在波茲南會議上表示，發達國家與發展中國 家之間應對氣候變化的合作夥伴關係應該「從空談轉化到了 實際行動」。但如果觀察發展中國家參會代表的情緒，這種 說法可能過於樂觀。 有聯合國研究文獻指出幫助發展中國家進行適應、減排、保 護森林等工作，每年需要的資金至少在 1,000 億美元左右。 但到目前為止，幫助全球氣候受害國的「適應基金」裏只有 約 8,000 萬美元，與目標相距甚遠。

但峇里過去一年，就如何大幅度「開源」獲取應對氣候變化

聯合國秘書長潘基文在會議第二周發表演講，指出今天人類 同時面對氣候危機和金融危機雙重挑戰，「但這也提供了一 個千載難逢的良機──讓我們有可能同時解決兩重挑戰」。 將巨大的經濟投資刺激計劃變得更為綠色、有利於對抗全 球變暖的同時，也能產生千百萬的就業機會和新的經濟增 長點。無獨有偶，與戈爾的說法不謀而合之餘，也跟奧巴馬 將「綠色就業」、「綠色經濟恢復」作為他振興美國經濟、 重獲國際議題領導地位的核心思想一致。

資金及其分配機制的關鍵問題卻並沒有展開有價值的討論。 在金錢問題上，發達國家與發展中國家的分歧日益明顯。 要彌合發達國家與發展中國家之間的信任，並且激勵更多國 家參與減排，氣候資金問題是重要的一環。這兩年中國在談 判中越來越敢言，因此各方均期望中國能站出來，加強與發 展中國家特別是非洲國家和小島國聯盟的合作，幫助這些最 需要支援的發展中國家進一步爭取國際社會的資金支持。

3. 氣候之「危」與金融之「機」 金融海嘯危機席捲全球，雖然聯合國的高級官員曾多次呼籲 金融風暴不應阻止國際社會迎戰氣候變化的決心，但在會議 的談判上，金融危機還是成為一些成員國家降低行動目標的 藉口，比如意大利就以減排成本會變得過於高昂為由而抵制 2020 年的減排目標。

在潘基文和戈爾的講話中，中國的投資刺激計畫被反覆 提及。4 萬億人民幣鉅資的四分之一都將集中在擴大可再生能 源、節能環保等項目上，這可能會大大加快中國走向低耗 能、低污染、低碳排放的可持續發展模式。 在未來數月裡，如果中美兩國可以證明綠色投資的雙重療 效，對於在風暴漩渦中越陷越深的歐洲國家和準備後退的其 他發達國家將會是完美的榜樣，足以讓各國在哥本哈根氣候 大會簽下有力、有效的保護氣候行動協議。 倒數已經開始，邁向 9 個月後的哥本哈根氣候大會，你準備 好了嗎？

Food Crisis:

Africa: 非洲 一系列氣候變化的惡果 包括暴雨、糧食減產、 資源縮減等，正導致 非洲人民需要大規模遷 移，令衝突劇增。因此 綠色和平於08年底開 始於非洲成立 3 個辦公 室，以應對當地的環境 問題。

Copenhagen: 哥本哈根 2009年，你除了必須 知道哥本哈根是丹麥的 首都外，今年12月各國 更將聚集於這個北歐城 市進行氣候談判，有關 氣候變化的下一步，都 聚焦在這個「全球最適 合居住的城市」。

糧食危機 捱熱之餘，08年我們更 要捱貴米。綠色和平發 表的《氣候變化與中國 糧食安全》報告指出若 不及時採取行動，氣候 變化將使中國在2050 年的糧食總生產下降 14%-23%，而依靠中 國供應糧食的香港亦無 法置身事外。

環保製冷劑 廣泛應用於製冷行業 的含氟溫室氣體（即 F-gases）已經佔溫室 氣體排放總量 4%，90 年代初，綠色和平與一 家德國公司合作開發了 不導致氣候變化的製 冷技術 Greenfreeze， 不少歐洲主要生產商 都正在使用此環保製 冷劑。

喜馬拉雅 冰川融化是氣候變化的 最佳證據，2008 年， 綠色和平的考察隊遠 赴喜馬拉雅，對比起 1968 年所拍的照片， 珠峰中絨布冰川明顯大 幅後退，幾十年後，我 們的水源之地還是否有 冰川儲水？

擴闊氣候眼界 26個英文字母，大家幼稚園的時候早已學會，不過時至今日， A又點止Apple，B又點止Boy咁簡單，重新教你有關氣候變化 的A-Z，在以綠色主導的2009，必須及早留意。

Bioenergy: 生物能源 即利用植物等有機物質 作為燃料。潛在的生物 能源包括垃圾場和污水 處理廠的甲烷氣、乾的 農業副產品如玉米和蔗 糖棄渣、林業副產品如 鋸木廠的殘渣等。

森林砍伐 植物吸收大量的二氧化 碳，森林一旦被砍伐或 燃燒，碳就會釋放到大 氣層。現時森林砍伐所 造成的溫室氣體排放已 佔全球溫室氣體排放總 量的1/5。

Emission Trading: SPRING ISSUE 09

排放交易 排放交易是透過市場機制減排的方法。 在現行聯合國的清潔生產機制下，發展 中國家在工業生產階段所成功減少的二 氧化碳，可申報成為減排認證，再轉售 予發達國家，並納入發達國家的減排配 額。

聯合國政府間氣候變化專門委員會 於1988 年由聯合國世界氣象組織 (WMO) 及聯合 國環境計劃 (UNEP) 成立，目的是為決策者提供 有關氣候變化上科學及技術的建議。委員會更 於2007 年獲得諾貝爾和平獎。

工作 改善全球暖化，不一定 與經濟發展相違背。奧 巴馬再次重申，他的首 要任務是創造綠色經濟 以增加就業職位，在未 來10年投資1,500億美 元發展可再生能源，就 是創造新就業機會的最 佳途徑，

Kyoto Protocol: 京都議定書 1997 年在日本京都制 定的《京都議定書》是 唯一受國際社會認可並 具約束力以應對氣候變 化的條例。當中要求工 業國家於2008-2012年 內，依照1990年的水 平，減少 5% 溫室氣體 排放。

Low Carbon Economy: 低碳經濟 歐美等發達國家正在 掀起一場低碳經濟的革 命，亦即以低能耗低污 染為基礎的經濟。比如 英國引入了碳排放貿易 基金、美國通過能源法 案等，都是將走向可持 續的低碳經濟的例子。

UNFCCC: 聯合國氣 Poverty:

Mitigation: 減緩 面對氣候變化，國際間提 出的策略就是「適應」 (Adaptation) 和「減緩」 (Mitigation)。「減緩」 是實際減少二氧化碳及 溫室氣體的排放量， 「適應」則是減低氣候 變化影響所作出的一系 列應變措施。

貧窮 氣候變化絕對是貧者愈 貧的關鍵。貧窮國家經 濟模式以農業為主，氣 候變化帶來的極端天氣 及自然災害，對他們的 影響都最直接，令他們 脫貧的路變得更漫長。

Refugees:

難民 極端的氣候不單令某些 地區的人民生計不保， 生命備受威脅，他們更 因而被迫移居他處，成 為「氣候難民」。聯合國 一項研究估計到 2010 年，全球約有 5,000 萬 「氣候難民」。

候變遷綱要公約 《京都議定書》正是《聯 合國氣候變遷綱要公 約》的附加協議，公約 於 1992 年得到 189 個 國家的認可，目標在於 維持溫室氣體的濃度在 一個水平為最終目標。

Vegetarian: 素食

We’re kicking off this series with Greenpeace China’s climate and energy campaigner Iris Cheng, who gets frustrated but is prepared to fight “tooth and claw” for the environment.

我於 7 個月前加入綠色和平，於綠色和平總部主力氣候工作，平日一起工作的都是對 環境工作充滿熱誠與承擔的人，因此得出一系列有關綠色生活的想法。 看看你同不同意吧！ 綠色生活就是生活上作出正確的選擇──我們今天作出的選擇，將會直接影響我們下一 代的生活，我所說的不單是個人的日常選擇，更包括政府作出的決定，例如法律上的 決策、國家的發展，以及有什麼技術應該加以推廣等問題。 各國政府的決定，很大部分時間均漠視了環境的考慮，例如不受控制地使用化石燃料如 燃煤作為主要能源，已正在嚴重地影響我們的氣候，造成致命的乾旱及海平面上升等 問題。綠色和平泰國分部的同事 Tara Buakamsri 曾跟我說，泰國於短短 20 多年內，已 失去了1/5 的沿海土地。另外一位太平洋島國的同事 Shirley Atatagi 亦向我展示過一張圖 片，圖中一名老人站在海中深處，他身後的是父母墳墓的墓石，他年輕的時候，墓地仍 是處於陸地的，現在卻已經被淹於水中。

This brings me to my second point. Being green can make you very frustrated because the people who hold the reins of power seem to be so short-sighted.

Climate change is the single most serious threat to humanity to date, yet governments are still stalling on taking firm action.

Believe me, there are a lot of very frustrated environmentalists out there.

Green life is about making the right choices: the choices we make today will have a direct impact on our children’s lives tomorrow. I am not just talking about our personal day-to-day choices, but also the decisions government makes. Decisions on laws, how should a country develop, what technology should be promoted.

For a long time those decisions by governments have been very far from green.

The unchecked expansion of fossil fuels as a primary energy source, mainly via coal burning, is profoundly affecting our climate causing deadly droughts and seas to swallow up land. Tara Buakamsri, a climate and energy campaigner from Greenpeace Thailand, told me that Thailand has lost one fifth of its coastal areas in just 20 years.

Shirley Atatagi, another colleague from the Pacific Islands, showed me a photograph of an elderly man standing thigh-deep in the sea, behind him is the headstone of his parent’s grave, now under water. When he was young the cemetery was far inland.

Since joining Greenpeace seven months ago as an international climate and energy campaigner – I have had the pleasure to work alongside some deeply committed and inspirational individuals, and through this, I have consolidated some of their thoughts on what it means to lead a ‘green life’.

But we have to overcome that frustration.

Climate change is Greenpeace China’s focus this year – and may be for years to come. As a climate and energy campaigner, it’s amazing to have an opportunity to shape the campaign.

And for us to make a difference this year, we need as many people as possible to be directly involved – especially as China is expected to play a key role in the international climate negotiations in December.

Being green is about “fighting teeth and claw for our children”. Being green isn’t only about saving the whales anymore, it’s about saving our world.

In our globalised world, important decisions that affect our lives (or our children’s lives) are often made in international conferences, and in the board rooms of multi-national companies, with little consideration about the environment. That’s why nowadays environmentalists are often seen to be donning suits and fighting the battle inside government lobby and negotiation rooms.

這使我想到我的第二點。堅持環保可以令人十分沮喪，因為決策者似乎都十分短視。 氣候變化已是一個嚴重威脅到人類的問題，但政府仍然拖延，並沒有積極地採取果斷的 行動。 告訴你，感到沮喪的環保人士有很多，但我們必須克服這種挫折感。 氣候變化是綠色和平今年、甚至往後幾年的工作重點。身為氣候變化項目主任，有機會 參與這項目的工作，實在很難得。

引領綠色的生活，就是為下一代的生活而奮戰。環保，並不單是拯救鯨魚，而是關乎保 護整個地球！

Progress: Australia eventually signed up to Kyoto; the US (which is not

a signatory) agreed on a global reductions timetable; general promise that developing countries would make efforts to reduce emissions and developed countries would work on clean technology to reduce greenhouse pollution.

POZNAN Date: December 2008 Aim: Midpoint negotiations aimed at pushing nations closer to an agreement in Copenhagen.

Progress: Very little; some discussion on a fund to help developing countries deal with the effects of climate change; no concrete results.

COPENHAGEN Date: 7-18 December 2009.

Aim: To get developed countries to agree to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30-40 percent from 1990 levels by 2020; to establish a Forest Funding Mechanism where developed countries could use funds to stop climate killing deforestation; and to get a commitment from developed countries to transfer funds and clean technology to help developing countries cut their greenhouse pollution.

300 DAYS AND COUNTING

We’re at the start of 2009 and it’s likely you are all worried about the global financial crisis. At the same time, and like a stroke of good luck – we hope – Barack Obama enters his US presidency heralding a new era of positive action against climate change. He’s our best chance at solving both crises – the financial and the environmental.

As part of my work as a Greenpeace climate and energy campaigner, I take part in policy work. Many young people have never experienced international climate change negotiations. So what is it like to be an observer at these high-level meetings?

“In the midst of this synchronised global recession, there is an emerging consensus throughout the world that the best, indeed the only way to effectively combat the recession is with a synchronised global stimulus and in nation after nation, leaders have concluded that they must design a green stimulus and build the infrastructure for renewable sources of energy.”

But to my mind every meeting (including Poznan) leading up to Copenhagen is crucial. We need to start ironing out differences now and working out our solutions now so that in Copenhagen real results can be achieved.

These are the key demands for a successful treaty in Copenhagen: 1. Greenhouse gas emissions We need to keep mean global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial times. Drawing up a long-term plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is essential. At Bali it was concluded that developed nations must reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 by between 25 and 40 percent from 1990 levels.

The world’s media was not that interested in the last round of negotiations in December in Poland.

Nothing could be achieved in Poland, they said.

They were waiting for Copenhagen.

China expressed its hope that the developed world would set responsible targets. China put pressure on Australia, Canada, Japan and the European Union to reconsider their medium-term emission reduction targets. Of course, the world is also looking towards China to take a leading role in these talks and for Beijing and Washington to cooperate strongly on tackling climate change. If these two countries can work together, Copenhagen has a much better chance of success.

But there’s no time to lament. We have much work to do. After attending the Bali climate change meeting in 2007, I finally understood that there were not many countries that really cared about fighting for the climate and that those countries that were the most vulnerable to disasters caused by climate change were those countries that had the least power. It is left to non-governmental organisations like Greenpeace to keep pushing to break this political stalemate.

Before the conference, America’s newly elected President Obama gave a very encouraging speech. He announced that he would set ambitious targets to cut carbon dioxide to 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050.

The first time I took part in a United Nations climate change meeting was at a conference in Germany.

That time both my mind and body experienced unprecedented challenges. The documents were full of terminology and acronyms – I couldn’t understand anything. I felt terrible! Later I slowly began to understand all the terms. I also began to realise that most countries in these negotiations just fight for anything that will benefit themselves. And I asked myself, when will someone start really caring about the climate?

Unfortunately at Poznan there were many developed countries that didn’t show much interest in discussing how much they were prepared to cut their emissions over the next decade. In particular, Japan and Australia were very reluctant to talk about specific targets. Then the European Union set itself a very conservative target of reducing emissions by 20 percent over 1990 levels by 2020, a good 5 percentage points below the bottom of the target recommended by scientists.

But there is hope.

2. Funding and technology President of the UN General Assembly has said that developed and developing countries have to start cooperating on stopping climate change.

But looking at how Poznan played out, this cooperation seems to be more and more unlikely.

UN research has concluded that we need to invest at least US$100 billion a year to help the developing world reduce their emissions and protect their forests. But so far funds for this work amount to only about US$80 million.

Since Bali there has been no solution on how to raise this kind of money to address climate change. Neither has there been any breakthrough in developing a distribution mechanism.

Building up these funds is crucial to getting the developed and developing world to work together and to trust each other. China has been increasingly outspoken on this front and we expect Beijing to build bonds with poorer countries, especially in Africa and with small island states, to fight for more financial support for the fight against climate change.

3. Financial opportunities from fixing the climate crisis Although senior UN officials have been warning countries not to use the financial crisis as an excuse not to move on climate negotiations, many countries at Poznan cited their economic woes as reasons they could not commit. For example Italy backed out of committing to 2020 emission reduction targets because of the financial slump.

The idea that the financial crisis provides a “golden opportunity” to develop climate-friendly green industries was brought up by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the second week. He suggested that a Green New Deal could create millions of jobs and stimulate the economy.

In China’s case, about one quarter of its US$586 billion economic stimulus package is ear-marked for environmental projects. This money could be injected into energy efficient, low-polluting and low-carbon sectors and transform the country’s development path to a sustainable one.

We are looking to China and the US to lead the way over the next year so that the European Union and other developed countries will be encouraged to take a firm and confident stance at Copenhagen and so that we will get a strong and effective agreement at the end of negotiations which will stamp out a global action plan to stop climate change.

Climate change is happening now and we are all paying for it. It affects the whole planet and threatens every person living in every country on every continent. Recently we have suffered from unexpected floods, increasingly serious droughts, fierce windstorms, and heavy snow falls.

HONG KONG HEROES FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

We can’t wait any longer. While our government is preoccupied with the economic crisis, a far more critical threat is hanging over our heads – climate change. Government action needs to happen quickly if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change and have the necessary strong environmental protection in place.

America’s new President Barack Obama has given us all hope that he will make big strides in tackling his country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

He has talked about using local talent, local technology, and local money to invest in green industries to pull the nation out of the economic slump and healing environmental ills at the same time.

We need this kind of commitment from Hong Kong too. We are a developed region. We have the money to invest in a greener and healthier Hong Kong.

This December the United Nations will hold a crucial round of international negotiations on climate change at Copenhagen in Denmark.

What happens there dictates whether the world can avoid the worst disasters of climate change. What about Hong Kong? So far, it has not shown any interest in taking any concrete action at Copenhagen.

Too often, the government hides behind Beijing in shirking its responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the mainland has made some positive steps in improving energy efficiency and developing its renewable energy sector. All Hong Kong has done is to draw up the feeble target of having renewable energy make up as little as 1 to 2 percent of the whole sector by 2012.

This year, as part of our climate change campaign, we will be looking for climate heroes in Hong Kong. Ordinary people like you and me that are committed to making a difference. We hope that you can support our climate change campaign work, you can support our climate heroes, and you can support immediate action against climate change.

CLINTON IN CHINA

It was a busy week in February for Greenpeace China when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with top government officials in Beijing. We welcomed her with a giant hour glass inscribed with the words: “time is running out” referring to the urgency of solving climate change and sent an open letter to her and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi stressing the need of US-Sino cooperation on leading a global effort to reduce greenhouse pollution.

On the eve of her visit, we placed an ad in liberal newspaper Nanfang Zhoumo (Southern Weekly) highlighting that despite the stark differences between China and the US, they have one crucial thing in common: the need to stop climate change.

An ancient Japanese legend says that anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes will have their heart’s desire come true. So Greenpeace sent 1,000 paper whales to the Japanese embassy in Stockholm with a message “Free Junichi and Toru”.

In May 2008, Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki exposed a corruption scandal involving the Japanese government-sponsored whaling programme. But instead of prosecuting the whalers, Japan arrested our two activists. They face up to ten years in jail if convicted.

In Hong Kong, our activists locked themselves in wooden handcuffs to protest outside the Consulate-General of Japan.

Justice for whales, justice for Greenpeace!

Greenpeace has bought a piece of land slap bang in the middle of a plot of land earmarked for a third runway for London’s main airport, Heathrow.

The last thing the UK needs is a new massive runway. Expanding airport travel will just add to the climate change problem.

Hong Kong rapper MC Yan put our hopes for more government responsibility on reporting and dealing with our city’s air pollution to music. We have been pushing the Hong Kong government to update the way they report air quality to World Health Organisation standards. For years, the government has resisted changing their outdated method.

Dirty dealings: e-waste dumped in third world

An undercover Greenpeace investigation in the UK has exposed a shocking trade where waste electronics are illegally exported to third world countries as second-hand goods. We put a tracking device inside a broken TV and watched where it went. It was loaded onto a container and went to West Africa and eventually ended up in Nigeria even though EU regulations say it should be tested first and recycled.

This trade is illegal and immoral. It’s a cheap and dirty disposal route.

Rich countries are just dumping their poisonous e-waste on poor countries without taking out the toxic chemicals first.
