PUBS AT CHRISTMAS

To help succeed this Christmas, we can look back at what customers told us worked for them over Christmas 2024 and also look at the wider macro economic environment and trends.

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE

INSIGHT Consumer confidence was low in December 2024 as the UK had been living with the higher cost of living for over two years by this point. And actually, going into Christmas 2025, there’s still a lot of uncertainty – the Autumn budget won’t be released until the end of November and customers are waiting to see if there will be any measures announced that will impact them.

IMPLICATION Value for money is also key – ensure customers have the best possible experience for the price they pay. Service, quality of food and drinks and atmosphere all play an important role in the feeling of having a good value experience.

FOOD QUALITY

INSIGHT Food quality is of even higher importance at Christmas.

IMPLICATION Poor food quality and crowding were top barriers to visiting pubs – ensuring good staffing to deliver high quality food and to make sure speed of service is good, customers are seated and attended to in a timely manner is more important than ever at such a busy time of the year.

CREATE A MEMORABLE FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE

INSIGHT In the run up to Christmas 2024, customers told us that the things that make their experience memorable at Christmas time are:

IMPLICATION Consider if you can offer anything different this year to make guests’ visit extra special – festive decorations make the atmosphere cosy and Christmassy, crackers can bring a bit of fun to a Christmas meal and interesting new/different festive food and drinks could be a reason to visit your pub over others.

DRIVE EARLY BOOKINGS

INSIGHT 11% of customers told us that they start to make plans for Christmas in September. The kids go back to school, the nights start to

draw in and the weather changes which makes people start to look forward to Christmas and think about making plans with friends and family, so it’s important to make sure customers know what you’re offering over Christmas as they start to think about making plans.

IMPLICATION Don’t be afraid to advertise your Christmas offering early – 26% of customers told us it’s helpful to know they can book early. The majority of customers (57%) told us that if it’s too early for them to book, they just ignore it, it doesn’t put them off visiting the pub.

In 2017, when Garth Hughes swapped a career in financial services for the cut and thrust of the hospitality sector, he began an exciting new family adventure. The Hughes’ relocated from Hong Kong to North Devon where working alongside his wife Sascha, the couple are developing an impressive portfolio. As Garth explains:

“We live and feel what a community pub is. We see the same people every day and at the same time too – so you really start to see how much people rely on the business for their own social benefits. Everybody from our community gets together in our pubs.”

“We’ve got the Royal George which is more of a restaurant with some rooms, it’s situated right on the estuary – and it really is stunning. We also have the Royal Hotel, which is wet only – but we’ve also got the fish and chip shop over the road – known as the Royal Chippy. So, you go and order from there and then eat them in the pub.”

And Garth is quick to praise the role of Greene King in facilitating the growth of their estate too.

“When I mentioned that I was interested in another pub, our Sales Development Manager, Dean Heasman, suggested that I speak to the finance team to see what was possible.

“Greene King has a loan book, and we were able to tap into that to help us with the acquisition of The Golden Lion (an historic pub dating back to the late 1700s). I’m very grateful for what they have done, and it has worked out well for both sides.”

Finding the balance between upgrading the pubs but retaining their essential character was an important consideration for the Hughes’.

“We invested in new TVs and made some adjustments to the building but there was a lot that was so loved by the locals that we

had to try and retain.”

It’s clear that finding the right partners to help navigate this journey into the hospitality industry was a top priority for Garth.

“In my previous job I was responsible for looking after customers. So, I place a lot of value on relationships. Finding proactive people who care and who could help us to develop our family business was very important to me.

“And in Dean we found somebody who is very commercially aware, friendly and who always keeps in contact. I like how he takes the time to understand what we are trying to achieve as a business. It might sound simple, but not everybody else does that.”

It’s on my reading list. I don’t have lots of conversations with other publicans, so this magazine is great as it provides a snapshot of the market and the products that are available.

It’s a valuable source of information for me, one of the main publications that I read. I like to read it with a coffee after breakfast. It’s a very useful publication to me.”

For Garth, the value Greene King provides is found in much more than just supplying beverages – it’s the overall package.

“Yes, they’ve helped us with products, but they’ve also helped us with pricing, delivery and training too. We want our people to progress, so we sent six of our team down to the Brewery in Bury St Edmunds to get expert advice on cellar management. It was a real success and none of the other breweries have offered us that.”

It would appear that Garth’s transition from the corporate world to his current role is one that he and his family have embraced.

“I love it. It has been quite the ride. The bank I worked for was huge and I was just a tiny cog in a huge operation. But now I’m creating something that people love and feel really attached to. It was exhausting to start with, but we’re in a much better place now. In fact, my change of career has made us really happy as a family too. I love community pubs because they play such an important part in society, and they make other people happy too – it’s such a social industry which is very enjoyable.”

And the relationship he enjoys with Greene King is one that he continues to appreciate as well.

“I think they sell some great products, which our customers really like. But to meet people who have taken such an interest in our business and who have then genuinely facilitated our growth is a very rare thing. I haven’t met many people who have done that. It’s massive and I really appreciate it – it is a real long-term partnership.”
