To help succeed this Christmas, we can look back at what customers told us worked for them over Christmas 2024 and also look at the wider macro economic environment and trends.
INSIGHT Consumer confidence was low in December 2024 as the UK had been living with the higher cost of living for over two years by this point. And actually, going into Christmas 2025, there’s still a lot of uncertainty – the Autumn budget won’t be released until the end of November and customers are waiting to see if there will be any measures announced that will impact them.
IMPLICATION Value for money is also key – ensure customers have the best possible experience for the price they pay. Service, quality of food and drinks and atmosphere all play an important role in the feeling of having a good value experience.



INSIGHT Food quality is of even higher importance at Christmas.
IMPLICATION Poor food quality and crowding were top barriers to visiting pubs – ensuring good staffing to deliver high quality food and to make sure speed of service is good, customers are seated and attended to in a timely manner is more important than ever at such a busy time of the year.
INSIGHT In the run up to Christmas 2024, customers told us that the things that make their experience memorable at Christmas time are:

IMPLICATION Consider if you can offer anything different this year to make guests’ visit extra special – festive decorations make the atmosphere cosy and Christmassy, crackers can bring a bit of fun to a Christmas meal and interesting new/different festive food and drinks could be a reason to visit your pub over others.
INSIGHT 11% of customers told us that they start to make plans for Christmas in September. The kids go back to school, the nights start to
draw in and the weather changes which makes people start to look forward to Christmas and think about making plans with friends and family, so it’s important to make sure customers know what you’re offering over Christmas as they start to think about making plans.
IMPLICATION Don’t be afraid to advertise your Christmas offering early – 26% of customers told us it’s helpful to know they can book early. The majority of customers (57%) told us that if it’s too early for them to book, they just ignore it, it doesn’t put them off visiting the pub.

With its two bars, restaurant and eight bedrooms, The Famous Star Hotel based in Moffat, Dumfriesshire has been included in the Guinness Book of Records since 1987 as the world’s narrowest detached hotel. Marc Leighfield is the third generation of his family to own and run the business, and he’s been quick to begin his succession planning too as he explains:
“My grandparents and parents purchased the business in 1985, and in July this year, we celebrated our 40th year anniversary here.
“My oldest son will be 13 next year and he’ll start to get involved soon too. We’re on the third generation now and we’re hoping to make it to a fourth!”
“To be in this trade for 40 years is no mean feat. There have been some huge changes in this sector since 1985. And customers’ expectations have changed a lot in that time too.”
Belhaven have been almost ever-present alongside the Leighfield family as they have experienced that evolution, providing drinks and doing so exclusively for the last 15 years.
“I’m 36 years old now. And I’ve been involved in the business
since I was only 13. And I’ve known our Sales Development Manager, Roy Knox for all of that time.
Marc now acts as the Duty Manager responsible for running the business alongside his two brothers and his parents who remain involved. And it’s clear they all regard Roy as part of the family too.
“It’s a very personal relationship. Roy’s an integral part of the business, whether that’s solving technical issues or providing new stock and promotional items. He’s even helped us to organise outside catering for events that we have managed and he’s always at the other end of the phone.
“I know Belhaven are a large company, but we always get that local, family friendly feel from them, which we really value.”
For a business that’s been operating
for four decades, continuity from their suppliers is understandably important to them as well.
“Dealing with the same people who know our business just makes everything so much easier.
“People’s tastes change very quickly in this industry, and they value the money in their pocket too. So, it’s crucial that we have the right products for the right people. I think we’ve got 12 different draught products available - all provided by Belhaven - so there is something for every taste.”
“There’s always someone there to speak to. They have great knowledge of the market and give good advice. Another big plus is their technical know-how. Once an issue has been reported, it’s always

resolved quickly. And we’ve built up a good rapport with their technical team too.
“The market is fierce, and pricing remains a big issue. Belhaven have always been very fair as we try to provide our customers with great value. The hospitality trade isn’t getting any easier to make a living from. So, it’s a big help to work with people who know what we need.”
Despite the tough trading conditions, Marc’s passion for the business shines through.
“When it’s family run, you’re going to put your heart and soul into everything. It’s a very personal thing. We have built-up a great reputation which is proved by the number of repeat customers that we welcome back to the hotel.
“Belhaven really understand how important the business is to us and our role in the community too. Earlier this year we organised an event for our 40th anniversary and they were really helpful in providing promotional stock and some new product kegs to try too. They were very influential in what was a special weekend for our family.”
As you can imagine, owning the world’s narrowest hotel doesn’t come without its logistical challenges too.

“Our building is very unique, and it can be awkward to deliver to, but the Belhaven team are always so accommodating and helpful when they bring the products. They look after us in every sense.”
The hotel continues to thrive amongst its local community, where the locals appreciate the hearty, home-cooked meals they provide at reasonable prices. And Marc and his family look to the future with confidence.
“It’s been great to have Belhaven alongside us for the last 20 years and we hope to continue that relationship for the next 20 years too.
“The products we get from them are always top-notch. They’ve never been complacent and have always adapted to our business needs.
“This business doesn’t stand still; it needs to move forward all the time and it’s nice to have Belhaven alongside us to on the journey.”

Following a successful trial in Scottish pubs earlier this year, our new lager, Belter is now available for your venue too.
Belter is a 4% ABV lager that is crisp, refreshing and balanced in flavour. Subtle biscuit malt sweetness meets a gentle citrus hop character, delivering a clean, easy-drinking finish.
The golden lager is proudly Scottish, and its striking red branding has been designed to catch the consumer’s eye at the bar.
The beer was initially trialled in a small number of pubs in Edinburgh earlier this year. This allowed us to gather targeted feedback on the product and then refine the branding and the


beer itself for wider distribution. In addition to the trial, the beer underwent extensive consumer testing to ensure its flavour profile, aroma and appearance met the expectations of lager drinkers.
