Bringing the city to the

Born and bred in Bolton, Lancashire, Diane Hunter hails from a family of hoteliers. She has owned the family-run Mount Stewart Hotel based in Portpatrick, Southwest Scotland since 2003 and now feels that, despite many challenges over those years, the business is really thriving.

“Portpatrick is a little fishing village well known for all of its characters. We get a lot of visitors from Ireland and people from Glasgow too. We’ve seen increased trade from last year and it’s all very positive.”

“It started off as a glorified Bed & Breakfast and, over time, we have transformed it into a lovely hotel. We’ve invested heavily, making lots of improvements and now people from much further afield are coming to stay with us. And just like me when I first arrived, visitors are taken aback by the beauty of the place. It really is a stunning location.”

Importantly for Diane, the relationship she enjoys with Belhaven is much more than just

a transactional experience and she now purchases all of her drink exclusively through Belhaven’s Free Trade service.

“We’ve purchased our wines from various companies before, but over the last few years Belhaven’s selection has become so good that we don’t need to go anywhere else.”

“It’s a really long-standing and very important relationship, it’s central to everything that we do. But it’s a two-way thing. We need their support, and they are very aware of the challenges that we face. They are always there for us.”

“They’ve helped us in so many ways. When we’ve been making our improvements, they’ve been

right beside us. Plus, when we’re involved in local events or festivals, they always help us with the promotion of those too.

“We’ve built up great relationships with the team there over the years. We’ve now got George as our main point of contact and he’s a wonderful guy who is very helpful. He lives locally and we see him around the village, and he’s become a good friend. I think we enjoy a brilliant relationship together.”

Over the years, The Mount Stewart Hotel has received numerous awards for the quality of its accommodation, and now Diane is eager to be recognised for the quality of the hotel’s food and drink offer too.

People are much more discerning in their tastes now, and expectations have risen due to that. They want a fantastic experience and Belhaven have helped us to meet those expectations

Portpatrick is a small place and Belhaven have been supplying people here for so long, that they just feel like they are part of the community too.

“We’ve aimed to blend a chic contemporary vibe with a traditional Scottish setting. We’ve got a real passion for attention to detail. Our chef has been with us for 14 years now which has created a real local following. In fact, most of our team have been with us for a really long time now and that says a lot to me. The business is like a big family really and I include Belhaven as part of that as well.”

You don’t run a business for 23 years and not witness a great deal of change, and Diane is quick to observe the effects of the 2020 pandemic.

“I think since Covid, people have decided that they would prefer to go out less often, but when they do, they want the best. People are much more discerning in their tastes now, and expectations have risen due to that. They want a fantastic experience and Belhaven have helped us to meet those expectations.

“It was always my ambition to bring the city to the sea with all the different types of drinks that you can enjoy. Now, through Belhaven, we are able to offer a vast array of beverages at different price points. It’s only when I start talking about it, that I realise just how far we have come.”

Despite all her years in the trade. Diane maintains tremendous enthusiasm for her profession and continues to be a real champion for her local area.

“It’s a very rewarding business to be in, when you see people leaving with smiles on their faces and then they re-book, you realise you must be doing something right.

“We are lucky to be situated in such a stunning location, although it’s still a very well-kept secret. I’d like more people to be aware of Portpatrick, so that they come and visit us for a day or two. I know they wouldn’t be disappointed, because it really is a hidden gem.”

Belhaven’s Sales Development Manager George Tunnock takes great pride in the venue’s success too and he added:

“I really enjoy my job helping great venues like The Mount Stewart Hotel to prosper. Having run restaurants and pubs myself for over 20 years, I understand the challenges that people like Diane are facing, so I’ll do everything I can to support them. I care passionately about what I do and I always try to add value. Because, it’s a community where we’re all in it together.”

In an ever-changing drinks landscape, Cask ale remains a defining feature of the Great British pub. While its overall category volumes may be slightly down, its value, cultural importance and profit potential have never been clearer. Whether you're a cosy village pub or a buzzing city bar, cask ale could be the cornerstone of your success, and Greene King & Belhaven is ready and able to help you capitalise.

CASK STILL MATTERS

Yes, the headlines read that cask ale volume fell to 1.4 million hl in 2023 and its on-trade value slipped to £973 million (CGA by NIQ OPM), but don’t be fooled, this isn’t a story of decline, it’s one of refocus and reinvention.

Cask ale is exclusive to pubs, bars and venues – it’s not available in supermarkets, which makes it a genuine point of difference.

4.1 million people drink cask out of home (CGA BrandTrack) and many go out of their way to do so.

63% of cask drinkers are aged 55+, an audience with disposable income, loyalty and strong weekday pub habits. Cask drinkers visit more often and spend more, with 40% visiting weekly (10% higher than the average) and 60% happy to trade up for premium ales.

More importantly, cask ale drives weekday footfall, with 60% of cask drinkers visiting pubs Monday–Thursday, a crucial trade window for most venues.

While national volumes are dipping, SIBA members (independent brewers) reported a 10–14% rise in cask volumes in 2023, with cask now representing 63% of their total output. The message? Consumers are still thirsty for cask, especially when it’s well-made, well-served and locally relevant (CAMRA, 2024).

This presents a huge opportunity to build your range, attract local drinkers and reframe cask as a quality, experiential category that rewards exploration.

Following a successful trial in Scottish pubs earlier this year, our new lager, Belter is now available for your venue too.

Belter is a 4% ABV lager that is crisp, refreshing and balanced in flavour. Subtle biscuit malt sweetness meets a gentle citrus hop character, delivering a clean, easy-drinking finish.

The golden lager is proudly Scottish, and its striking red branding has been designed to catch the consumer’s eye at the bar.

The beer was initially trialled in a small number of pubs in Edinburgh earlier this year. This allowed us to gather targeted feedback on the product and then refine the branding and the

beer itself for wider distribution. In addition to the trial, the beer underwent extensive consumer testing to ensure its flavour profile, aroma and appearance met the expectations of lager drinkers.
