Glen Brown has been a key part of the Waldegraves Family Holiday Park located in Mersea Island, Essex for 19 years now. And in his current role as The Club House manager, he has a wide-ranging set of responsibilities at this busy complex. As he explains:
“I’m proud to be part of an independent, family-owned park, welcoming guests yearround. From holiday homeowners to seasonal tourers & park guests, we offer fun, relaxation and lasting memories. Many of them return to us time and again, year after year! New premium lodges and top-tier grade static holiday homes add extra luxury for the perfect getaway experience. So, there’s lots to offer and lots to do all year round.”
The venue’s relationship with Greene King is a long standing one too, now dating back 11 years.
“We knew our sales development manager, Nikki, when she was with her previous employers, we really enjoyed working with her. So, when she told us she was joining Greene King, we had a
look at moving across to them and then she became our rep again. It wasn’t originally planned, but we’re very pleased about how it has all worked out.”
When he arrived at the Waldegraves, Glen specialised as a DJ and a host/ presenter, but he spotted an opportunity to widen his duties beyond just entertainment.
“Entertainment is my passion, and I was fully trained through Disney when I worked on their cruise line in the Caribbean. In fact, the guys at Greene King always call me ‘Mr Disney’!
“I identified that running a bar like we have here is very different to running a normal pub bar, so I suggested that we bring that and the entertainment together, and I manage the whole thing. I’ve been doing that for about 11 years now
and it has worked brilliantly. All the entertainers work as bar staff too, and it is just one team now.”
“I didn’t know anything about running bars, so I did a lot of training through Greene King, things like Cellar Service and gaining my personal licence. And we’ve put all of our team through the programmes too.”

With often as many as 400 thirsty customers of an evening, ensuring there is an adequate supply of drink is, understandably, one of Glen’s top priorities.
“I’m a big believer that when you deal with people, you are working with them as a partnership. The relationship is vital. And the rapport that we have with Greene King is very important to us.
“In addition to Mel and Nikki, we’ve got John in Cellar Service. Then there are the draymen, Louis and Jason, they are all fantastic. The draymen from other companies just used to throw the kegs at us, but these guys get really involved and have built a brilliant rapport with our bar staff.
Our team know all of the people at Greene King – it’s outstanding.”
And Greene King’s support extends well beyond the usual day-to-day business too.
“We have a fireworks display in November attended by around five and a half thousand people. Greene King arranges for the outdoor bars to be installed and then taken away again for us.
“I am often surprised by the sheer speed of their response. If there’s a fault and we need help, the next day they are here, and it has been done. If I ask Nikki for glassware or something like that, it just gets done, I never have to chase it up. I honestly could never say a bad word about them.”
Greene King’s Senior Sales Development Manager Nikki Hayter takes great pride in the venue’s success too and she added:

In an ever-changing drinks landscape, Cask ale remains a defining feature of the Great British pub. While its overall category volumes may be slightly down, its value, cultural importance and profit potential have never been clearer.
