Summer Time — Don’t Be Too Busy For God
Sister Sylvia B. Tyson
This time of year seems to bring increasing excitement over sun, outdoor activities and longer days to enjoy those activities. Often, we decide to fill our summer “break” to the fullest . Extra sun typically means extra stress from extra activities
I have heard so many people say things like, “I was reading my Bible and praying consistently until summer then things just got too busy ” Most churches experience less attendance, less excitement and less generosity during June, July and August
I’m not against summer; I love everything about it (except the intense heat, of course)
We must not let a busy summer crowd out our intimacy with Christ and His Church How can we avoid a spiritual regression in the summer months? Here are two suggestions to make this summer a time to dive deeply in the word, in prayer and with our church family
Summer Says Something About God’s Word.
Psalm 19 tells us that we should delight in the beauty of God’s creation and summer often provides unique opportunities to do so The Heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. However, Psalm 19 doesn’t stop with creation—the blue sky, the green grass, the warmth of the sun on our faces—rather, the beauty David sees in God’s creation moves him to celebrate the stunning power and beauty of God’s word The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
We don’t set aside the word of God to enjoy the work of God in creation Our souls still need reviving in the summer
Our simple hearts still need God’s wisdom found in God’s word . So, how should we balance our busyness and still find time to enjoy God through his creation and his word?
1. Beware of busyness.
Consider how busy you really want to make your summer “break .” Yes, it’s good to stay busy, be productive and make the most of time, but don’t overload Instead, be creative about ways to prioritize your walk with the Lord, as well as ways to spend time with family and friends enjoying God’s creation and each other together
Do things you normally couldn’t do, but also be okay doing “nothing” together in ways you can’t do with the busyness of work, school and life in general . Emphasize quality over quantity, and prioritize the rest The most important thing we can do for our families is show them that Jesus is still on the throne of our hearts, even when it gets to be short-sleeve weather
2. Make more time for God.
Follow Dr Martin Luther King’s advice: “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” The busier we are, the more dependent we should be on the Lord, because our hearts are more likely to be distracted and prone to wander Don’t give up your Bible reading and prayer . Dive into it all the more . Don’t give up gathering together with God’s family; make it an even higher priority
Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near Hebrews 10:24-25
We need God’s word and each other every week and every month, all year long
II am Not the Same Woman I Used to Be
By Sister Janice Shields
am not the same woman/person, I used to be! What does that even mean?
It means that life’s ups and downs, good and bad, have defined and redefined versions of who I was and who I am; it is a never-ending process
In the second Bible Study Class for women, we focused on the story of Leah . I gained a deeper understanding of who she was Leah embodied insecurities, doubt and internal struggles that are basic and foundational to women from every age group, social and professional stage of life . As women, we all understand love, loss, self-esteem, heartbreak, pain and faith .
The study of Leah led the group to an open discussion about the importance of self-love; recognition of one’s value, declaring and believing that we are more than the qualifying and conditional labels, limitations, negativity and restrictions that people place on us We are enough!
Leah’s story reminded me of a child’s book I saw in the Barnes and Noble Bookstore entitled “Broken Crayons Still Color” by Toni Collier and Whitney Bak While Leah was emotionally broken internally by her self-sabotaging view of herself and discounting perception of who she was, God created Leah with purpose . God had bigger plans for Leah and God seeded her with purpose and importance that superseded anything her father, husband, sister and others failed to see or could even imagine .
At the end of the Bible Study Class, I wondered what an older and wiser Leah would say to the younger naïve and insecure Leah
In self-reflection of my life, what would the seasoned and wiser me say to the younger me that found a connection with Leah’s emotional roller coaster of feelings?
I am not the same woman that I used to be!
By Minister Karla Austin
Iknowit seems like every time a submit an article, I speak about myself However, if I don’t speak about me, I can’t tell the story about what God has done for me . Therefore, I wouldn’t be able to help someone who may be going through the same trial You see, ministry is people helping people Relative to mental health awareness, I would like to give you some self-care tips which you may or may not be aware of .
Mental health and self-care can bring a multitude of reactions To be perfectly honest, up until about 10 years ago, I was a person who would take care of everyone else’s needs . I cared hard and loved hard, but when the rubber hit the road, I lived like I myself had no personal needs of my own My initial reaction was “I got this” until my world as I knew it collapsed all around me . I thought that if I came to church, do what I needed to do for God and my family, that I was good and strong . In essence, that was far from true - I was weak . People who don’t care for themselves will turn a single mishap into a total catastrophe We allow ourselves to become physically and emotionally depleted and don’t even recognize it .
One day I had a little talk with Jesus and although He already knew, I told him about my troubles, and He told me “you have been listening to me, but you haven’t been hearing me . Shut everything down Now” . When I did that and focused on HIM and not my life as I knew it, things went from bad to ok, ok to good and good to greater, and that’s the individual I am now!
Let’s talk about self-care.
The definition of self-care is the ability to care for oneself through awareness, self-control and self-reliance, to achieve and maintain or promote optimal health and well-being . It can include anything you do to keep you healthy, physically and spiritually Biblical self-care is us partnering with the Holy Spirit in discernment and knowing our body limits It’s sustainable for us, we just have to want to put in the work .
Putting in the work means making sure we practice the following:
Physical Self-Care
1 Get Some Rest:
Exodus 20:8-10 commands keeping the Sabbath day holy by rest from work or labor .
Mark 6:31 shows Jesus telling His Disciples to rest: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
2 . Eat Right
Corinthians 6:19-20 emphasizes taking care of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit
Leviticus 11 God gives dietary laws to the Israelites, promoting health and well-being Continue on
Emotional and Mental Self-Care
3 . Peace and Anxiety:
Peter 5:7 encourages casting all anxieties on God because He cares for us .
Philippians 4:6-7 advises not to be anxious but to present requests to God, who promises peace that transcends understanding .
4 Renewing the Mind:
Romans 12:2 speaks about the transformation through the renewal of the mind, indicating the importance of mental health and spiritual renewal .
Spiritual Self-Care
5 . Prayer and Meditation:
Thessalonians 5:17 encourages believers to pray continually .
Joshua 1:8 highlights meditating on the Word of God day and night for prosperity and success .
6 Scripture Reading:
Matthew 4:4 emphasizes that man does not live on bread alone but on every word from God
Relational Self-Care
7 Community and Fellowship:
Hebrews 10:24-25 stresses the importance of encouraging one another and not giving up meeting together
Galatians 6:2 instructs to bear one another’s burdens, fulfilling the law of Christ.
8 Love and Forgiveness:
John 13:34-35 commands loving one another as Christ loved us, which builds a supportive community
Colossians 3:13 emphasizes forgiving others as the Lord forgave us, promoting emotional well-being .
Personal Reflection and Growth
9 . Self-Examination:
2nd Corinthians 13:5 encourages examining oneself to see whether one is in the faith
1 John 1:9 speaks about confessing sins to receive forgiveness and purification.
10 Wisdom and Guidance:
James 1:5 advises asking God for wisdom, who gives generously to all without finding fault.
Romans 8:14 mentions being led by the Spirit of God, indicating a life guided by divine direction .
In conclusion, let’s not forget that God’s compassion for our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs extend to all of us . We are made to know God, to crave understanding from God, to glorify God and to worship God .
I pray that after reading this article, you will have less reservations regarding caring for yourself Whatever you choose, start and end with God in your plans because He cares for you .
1 Corinthians 7:35 (NKJV)
Don’t Get Distracted by Distractions
By Minister Melissa Monroe
“And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.”
There are so many things in life that can distract us Some things prevent us from giving full attention to something else . However, not all distractions are bad in itself . Nevertheless, allowing ourselves to become preoccupied with something can often distract us from being preoccupied with Jesus
According to the King James Bible Dictionary, there are 5 definitions of distraction (quoted below):
1 The act of distracting; a drawing apart; separation
2. Confusion from a multiplicity of objects crowding on the mind and calling the attention different ways; perturbation of mind; perplexity
3. Confusion of affairs; tumult and disorder.
4 . Madness; a state of disordered reason; franticness and furiousness .
5 . Folly in the extreme, or amounting to insanity .
It’s the little things. Have you ever found yourself starting one simple thing like going for a cup of coffee, leading you to notice something amiss along the way and remedying that thing, only to be distracted by new triggers and tasks over and over before getting back to your original goal?
How about this, now that I’m older, I find the plot has changed in that after setting out on an original goal and being distracted along the way, I simply cannot remember what I set out to do in the first place. However, this is another conundrum for another time .
We are reminded in Hebrews 12:2 to look away from all that would distract us and to look to Jesus, who is the leader and source of our faith. He is the reason we believe. He is also the finisher, the One who brings things to maturity. Jesus never allowed the issues or the pleasures of life to distract Him from the ‘cross’ - which was why He came The enemy is constantly seeking to distract us, both to divert our energies and to keep our eyes off his attack strategy. He wants to distract us from our calling and set us up for the kill Whether it’s things of this world, getting caught up in issues that are not our business, personal rivalries, pointless worrying, or fruitless endeavors, we can be easily distracted! We need to constantly refocus our attention on the things that truly matter as we continue to persevere in this fight.
Be mindful of this tactic of distraction by the enemy . Take a break, check your activities and priorities for distraction and see if it’s being used against you Being intentional in seeking God’s will for our lives through prayer, study and meditation should be our priorities as believers . Living in this broken world can easily harden our hearts to the joy, peace and miracles that God gives us each day Sin is all over the place and Satan is the ultimate craftsman when it
Continue on page 10
comes to creating distractions that prevent us from seeing God at work in our lives . Often, Satan uses distraction and difficulty to take our eyes off of Jesus.
In Mark 6:45-52, Jesus sent His Disciples off in a boat while He went to the mountain to pray. Later that evening, the boat was far out at sea; Jesus was still by himself on land . He could see the Disciples struggling with the oars, the wind having come up against them At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea . He intended to go right by them . However, when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and screamed Jesus reassured them that it was He and to be of good cheer and not be afraid He then got into the boat and the wind stopped . The scripture says, “And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled.”
We see that even the Disciples were easily distracted and oblivious to the miracles that Jesus was performing right in front of their eyes . They were too busy and overwhelmed by the storm to see the miracle or appreciate it for all its worth .
They did not remember or recall the “miraculous power” that Jesus had shown in feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish just a few hours earlier. Having done that, surely, He had the power also to save them from the storm
Storms and rough seasons. These are the best distractions Satan uses to take our eyes off Jesus and all that He is doing in our lives The Disciples were so focused on the storm they were in the middle of, that they almost missed Jesus walking right by their boat on the water . Can you imagine missing a miracle as incredible as that one?
To not miss out on even the smallest of miracles, we must position our hearts to keep our eyes on Jesus even in the biggest of storms. Taking our eyes off Jesus allows Satan to distract us and leave us feeling hopeless and hardened. One way to stay focused on Jesus is to constantly remind ourselves of His past miracles and of the ways He has brought us through storms in the past . Jesus always has His eyes on us .
Trust God with your spiritual attention. Ask Him for His help and then trust Him to develop deeper attention over time Then you and I will discover our own ways of not getting distracted by distractions and refocusing our ears to God’s voice .
Amen
By Sister Janice Shields
Inthe silence, our minds can wonder and sometimes doubt creeps in, but it is imperative to trust God, trust the process, and stay focused during the quiet times .
As someone who relies heavily on “voice navigation” for travel, I used to get nervous and doubt that I was going in the right direction when the voice navigator would give directions and then go silent for long periods . Over time, I learned I had no choice but to trust the voice navigator .
I asked for help, so I had to wait for the next set of directions! The voice navigator only communicated when it had something to say . Priceless!
As a “work in progress” in my Christian walk, I used to get nervous when I would talk and pray to God for help and guidance . For periods, there would be silence and I would wonder if God heard my prayers and heard my voice . The yesterday me could be impatient As a result, I learned hard but valuable lessons The right now me has a savings account of testimonies to remind me that God is with me even in the silence and He doesn’t operate on my timetable . I asked for help; I prayed for help, so wait for God’s voice!
In both scenarios (God and the voice navigator), there’s room for U-turns, missteps, wrong turns, redirection and rerouting even if it’s at the cost of temporary heartache/break, trials, life experiences, lessons learned, testimonies, lost time and gas .
My favorite scripture, Proverbs 3:5-6 tells me to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.
Trust in the silence, because it’s working for your good!

Prayer for Daycare Babies to transition into Healthy and Spiritual Young Adults
By Deaconess Patricia Williams
The Senior Connection
Heavenly Father, I come in the righteous and holy name of Jesus praying for the daycare babies to grow into their young adult stage with the right teaching and nurturing, feeling secure and loved by the ones who have the love of Christ
I pray that You will lead, guide and protect them as they journey through life facing the woes and pressure of their peers and this world Holy Spirit, lead and guide them into all truth, knowing that it is in You, God, that they live, move and have their being Give them a peace of mind that they may stay focused on their school work and be successful in this world with the task that is set before them . Have mercy, oh Lord, and show them the way to go . Father, let them know that You are their strong tower, their way-maker and their all and all when they put their trust in You
Bless and protect them, as only You can do, not only in their youth but in their adult lives as well .
Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) – “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Romans 8:28 (NKJV) – And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Bishop Gresham and First Family
By Sister Dorothy Fairweather The Senior Connection
1 Cor. 13:7NIV - “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”
1 Cor. 13:17NIV - “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy….”
Father, we thank You for Bishop Kevin Gresham and the First Family and their instrumentality in leading us in Your Word . We thank You for reminding us in scripture to always remember them in our daily lives as our leaders who watch over our souls Father, we follow them as they walk circumspectly in faith so that the word of God is accessible to us
Father, we thank You for the word they preach . It has transformed us spiritually in such areas as prosperity, warnings, protection, strength, guidance, sanctification, correction, counsel, nourishes and enables us to be better disciples in our walk of righteousness with You
We pray for their strength, health and encouragement as they continue to do this wonderful work for You .
We thank You for your promotion of Pastor Kevin as he is following his call and election to do your work and further the Kingdom of God .
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen.
Prayer for Marriages
By Pastor Ruth Whitehead The Senior Connection
Most wise and faithful God, we come with a grateful heart and rejoicing in Your grace and mercy There’s no one like You, Father God, to strengthen hearts and minds . We give You all the glory, honor and praise as we look to the hills from which our help comes
As we go through this journey, we ask that You remind us of our vows and, Father God, to help us stand strong in our marriages and remember the Threefold Cord that joins us together . Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NKJV) says “Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
What two can easily do is hard to be done by one . I am praying that husbands and wives communicate and listen to one another May they continue to take time to date and enjoy their marriage When troubles come, teach them to be strong in You and the power of Your might . Remind each of them why they choose to love, honor and respect one another and to pray together daily Don’t give up
It’s in the matchless name of Jesus I pray.
Amen
Prayer for Education
By Sister Theresa Jennings The Senior Connection
Father God, we come before You today interceding on behalf of our educational system and the men and women who are in authority, whether it’s preschool, elementary, high school, college and/or graduate school First Father, thank You for creating our minds and giving us wisdom . We pray that educators would have a heart and mind to know that Jesus is Lord of their lives Please guided them by Your spirit as they develop curriculums with instructional materials that will be in line with your Word . We believe that You have given them skillful and godly wisdom and a heart to educate our children that is consistent with godly living
We pray that You will grant teachers a spirit of peace as they develop their lesson plans for the children . Grant them gentle spirits so that they can connect and engage our children to have a desire to learn . God, we ask that You guard the hearts of those who enter into the classroom every day and that teachers will be a positive influence that is consistent with Your will and purpose for the children .
We pray for our children, give them a hunger to want to study and learn so that they will become productive citizens
We lift up all employees of in the school system, cafeteria workers, janitorial staff that keep our schools clean and conducive environments for learning, and the school transportation workers who safely transport our children to and from schools daily .
Lord, we pray for safe environments We ask that You bless and protect our children as they go to class each day, that no harm will come to our children or staff members. We rebuke the spirit of gun violence or any other harm that the enemy places in the mind of others
Lastly, Lord, we pray that parents will strive to work together with school administrators and teachers, and that that they teach their children to be respectful of authority .
In the name of Jesus, I pray.
