STRENGTH IN UNITY: The Miami Shores Community Alliance Dream Team

In the heart of Miami Shores, where the sun kisses Biscayne Bay and the vibrant energy of community thrives, there is a beacon of unity and goodwill: the Miami Shores Community Alliance (MSCA). Born from a simple idea in the early 1980s, this Alliance has blossomed into a cornerstone of Village life, dedicated to building connections and uplifting every member of this diverse community.

At first, the MSCA was no more than a gathering of neighbors, convened by the Village mayor, united by the shared vision of enhancing their community. Over time, this grassroots initiative evolved into a local force for positive change, becoming a nonprofit organization and expanding its reach far beyond its humble beginnings.

Central to the MSCA’s mission is its commitment to supporting education and charitable efforts. In the early 1990s, the alliance introduced a groundbreaking fundraising event, with a goal of providing grants to non-profit organizations in the Village. This initiative gave these organizations the opportunity to amplify their impact, touching lives from pre-kindergarten to senior citizens, providing support that spanned generations.

Year after year, the MSCA continued to grow and thrive, fueled by its dedicated volunteers who self-

lessly devoted their time and energy to the cause. Each incoming Miami Shores mayor is tasked with appointing a new Alliance board so that they can help focus attention on issues they feel are important to the community and its citizens. The current board was selected by Mayor George Burch, and is led by passionate individuals like Melida Matos, Chair; Robert Bourne, and Paula Spirk, Vice-Chairs; Alice Burch, Secretary; Myrtha Wroy, Treasurer; Dr. Sherill Hobbs and Sharon Thompson. For these Board members working together, the Alliance became a testament to the power of community spirit.
