The Museum of Contemporary Art NORTH MIAMI:

A Cultural Beacon in the Heart of South Florida

History and Mission

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) began in 1981 as the Center for Contemporary Art, initially operating as a modest gallery showcasing modern art. In 1995, it was renamed MOCA to reflect its growing prominence. A year later, with the help of a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, MOCA expanded into a striking 23,000-square-foot facility designed by architects Charles Gwathmey and Gelabert-Navia. The striking new space became a central hub for contemporary art, attracting artists and audiences alike.

MOCA’s mission is to connect local and global conversations about contemporary art. It fulfills this goal by hosting dynamic exhibitions, fostering educational programs, and highlighting diverse and emerging voices. By celebrating cultural diversity and encouraging cross-cultural dialogue, MOCA serves as a vital institution for the North Miami community and beyond.

Collection and Exhibitions

MOCA’s permanent collection reflects its dedication to showcasing diverse artistic perspectives. It features sculptures, paintings, and works on paper, emphasizing artists from underrepresented backgrounds. Highlights include works by Dawoud Bey, Didier Wil-

liam, Purvis Young, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Morel Doucet, Stephen Arboite, Joan Lehman, Edouard Duval-Carrié, and Jo Nigoghossian. Through this inclusive array of artwork, MOCA invites audiences to explore contemporary art through a broad and meaningful lens.

The museum’s exhibitions engage visitors with fresh perspectives on contemporary and historical themes. Current showcases include:

Andrea Chung: Between Too Late and Too Early: This exhibit examines the Caribbean’s colonial history, tourism’s impact, and climate change using evocative materials such as sugar and archival images. Chung’s work prompts

located in Griffing Park, is a vibrant banyan tree illuminated by colorful fluorescent lights. This landmark, originally installed in 2011 and restored in 2021, serves as a gathering space for performances and art events. MOCA’s Art on the Plaza series further supports local talent by commissioning outdoor installations. Recent projects include Nicole Salcedo’s Earth Gate, which reflects on nature, renewal, and humanity’s interconnectedness.

Community Engagement

MOCA’s commitment to its community lies at the heart of its mission. For over 25 years, the museum has provided free and accessible programs that nurture creativity and foster

viewers to consider issues of labor, race, gender, and alternate futures.

Smita Sen: Embodied: Centered on the human body’s relationship to space and emotion, this exhibit incorporates sketches, a dance film, and geological studies, offering an intimate exploration of personal and physical landscapes.

Beyond its indoor galleries, MOCA enriches the community through public art installations. The Electric Tree by Mark Handforth,

Teen Art Force: A one-of-a-kind, free, multidisciplinary art program that provides teens ages 13–17 with a foundation in the arts. Sunday Series: A free live story time for children ages 1 – 5 and a caregiver, followed by an art-making project.

Summer Art Camp: An engaging opportunity for children to explore their artistic talents.

ship initiative that empowers young participants to guide others through the museum’s exhibitions.

Public events like Jazz at MOCA and outdoor art showcases create welcoming spaces for locals to gather, celebrate, and connect. Additionally, partnerships with institutions like the Brockway Memorial Library extend MOCA’s reach. Programs such as MOCA at the Library bring art-making activities into community spaces, embedding creativity into daily life and strengthening the bond between the museum and its neighbors.

As North Miami’s premier cultural institution, MOCA collaborates with local businesses and organizations to enhance the area’s cultural identity and support artistic growth.

MOCA’s Role in Miami’s Art Scene

MOCA plays a vital role in Miami’s dynamic art landscape. By providing a platform for both emerging and established artists, the museum elevates the city’s cultural reputation. Local talent—including Christopher Mitchell, Yanira Collado, and Nicole Salcedo—recently featured in exhibitions like Art on the Plaza, which highlights public installations that foster community engagement.

Through its innovative approach to exhibitions and programming, MOCA not only showcases Miami’s local voices but also positions the city as an international cultural destination.

Visitor Experience

MOCA ensures that contemporary art is accessible to everyone by offering free and low cost admission and programs. Visitors can enjoy an enriching experience exploring the museum’s diverse exhibitions, guided by knowledgeable staff who provide deeper insights into the art on display. These tours enhance understanding and create meaningful connections between audiences and the works they encounter.

Looking Ahead: Future Plans

As MOCA launches its 30th anniversary year in February 2025, it is preparing to cel-

ebrate with A Night in Paradise, a gala honoring Chair Emeritus William M. Lehman, Jr. and artist Didier William. This event will bring together artists, community leaders, and supporters to recognize the museum’s contributions to North Miami and the broader cultural landscape.

Sustainability remains a key focus for MOCA. Through partnerships with the City of North Miami and support from individuals, families, and corporate sponsors, the museum ensures the longevity of its programs and initiatives. MOCA’s dedication to connecting communities through art, embracing innovation, and fostering cultural dialogue ensures it will remain a cornerstone of South Florida’s artistic scene for years to come.

Leading with PASSION

Wes Pearce Takes the Helm as 2025 Miami Shores Chamber President

Wes Pearce, a long-time resident of Miami Shores, Realtor®, and passionate community supporter, has recently been inaugurated as the 2025 President of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce. As he takes on this leadership role, Wes brings not only his love for the neighborhood but also a wealth of experience to guide the Chamber into an exciting new year.

For Wes, Miami Shores is more than just a place to live; it’s a community he cares about deeply. His role as president of the Chamber represents his dedication to prosperity, support for local businesses, a commitment to enhancing the Chamber experience, and driving growth for its members. Together with his husband, Jay Yagoda, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Miami, Wes has already made a lasting impact in the area through both professional and volunteer efforts. Their shared passion for public service and the local community has made them two of Miami Shores’ most respected figures, always looking for ways to give back to the community they cherish.

A Miami Shores Love Story

Wes’s journey to Miami Shores began in 2010

when he moved to Miami after graduating from the College of William & Mary with a BBA in Marketing. Originally from a small city in Virginia, Wes was captivated by Miami’s vibrant culture and diverse communities. Wes recalls going to an event in Miami Shores one evening a few months after moving to Miami and feeling like this beautiful suburban enclave offered something special. The varied architectural styles and close-knit community of the Shores immediately caught his attention, and just a few years later, he moved to the Village and made a name for himself in the neighborhood.

In addition to his role as a real estate agent, Wes has become a prominent community leader. As a long-standing member and board executive of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce, he has dedicated a lot of effort to promoting business growth through his “Right Around the Corner” series on social media. His leadership extends to the Shores Young Professionals (SYP), a Greater Miami Shores Chamber networking group that helps support local businesses. He also sits on the Miami Shores Green Day committee, which he co-chaired for several years. Wes’s contributions go beyond real estate – he is a true advocate for the future of Miami Shores.

A rising star in real estate, Wes’s success has mirrored his commitment to his community. Known for his exceptional service, he was named one of the “20 UNDER FORTY” young real estate professionals by the MIAMI Association of REALTORS® in 2022. In 2018, Miami New Times recognized him as the Best Realtor®, a testament to his dedication to his clients.

Wes’s reputation is built on offering top-notch, stress-free service to clients, whether they are buying, selling, or renting properties. “Buying a home is one of the most important decisions a person can make, and I want my clients to feel confident every step of the way,” he says. As a Miami Shores homeowner himself, Wes under-

stands the joys and challenges of finding the perfect home. His knowledge of the local market makes him an invaluable resource for his clients.

“It is an incredible honor to be named the President of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce. This organization has been such an important part of my life since I began volunteering with it in 2017. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of forming meaningful friendships and invaluable business connections, all while witnessing the Chamber’s growth and progress firsthand.”

A Vision for the Chamber

Looking ahead, Wes envisions a future where Miami Shores thrives as a hub for both businesses and residents. As the new Chamber president, he is committed to fostering growth, innovation, and sustainability. “By working together, we can ensure the Greater Miami Shores area continues to be a beacon of opportunity and community spirit,” he says.

At home, Wes and Jay are joined by their beloved rescue dog, Toby, a constant reminder of the importance of compassion and care. Toby brings joy and companionship, adding to their commitment to family and community.

With Wes’s leadership and his Chamber board, we are poised for continued growth and success. His dedication to public service and his passion for our communities will help guide our businesses to a brighter future.

Spotlight on Miami Shores: A Neighborhood on the Rise

As a real estate professional with 35 years of experience and over 2,000 homes sold in Miami Shores, I’ve seen this neighborhood transform into one of Miami’s most desirable areas.

Why Miami Shores? Prime Location and Strong Community

Miami Shores is prized for its central location—close to downtown Miami, the beaches, and major airports. What truly sets it apart, however, is the strong sense of community. Tree-lined streets, local parks, and active neighborhood groups create a close-knit atmosphere, making it a standout in the ever-growing Miami landscape.

Rising Values and New Development

Home values in Miami Shores have surged, attracting both local buyers and those relocating from out of state. Alongside this rise in demand, new construction is on the rise, with luxury homes and modern townhomes replacing older properties. While some residents worry about the loss of the neighborhood’s Mediterranean Revival charm, others view these developments as necessary to keep Miami Shores competitive and meet modern housing demands.

Embracing Change in Miami Shores

As Miami’s population grows, demand for central neighborhoods like Miami Shores will continue to rise. While there is always tension between preserving the neighborhood’s character and embracing new development, the changes are broadening the appeal of the area, attracting young professionals, families, and retirees.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Miami Shores

The future of Miami Shores will bring both challenges and opportunities. While new development shapes the neighborhood, the strong community spirit will remain. Whether you’re buying, selling, or just curious about the market, I’m here to help you navigate these changes.
