There’s a quiet electricity running through Miami’s Shorecrest neighborhood these days, the kind that suggests something new is cooking – and it smells really, really good. Tucked into the space that once housed New Schnitzel House, a beloved neighborhood fixture, a new culinary chapter is unfolding, led by a passionate chef with South Florida roots and a vision that’s as layered and flavorful as the dishes he serves. Welcome to Double Luck Chinese, a bold and nostalgic pop-up turned full-fledged restaurant dream from Chef Adrian Ochoa and his close-knit team.
For Ochoa, who grew up in Kendall, the spark for Double Luck wasn’t born in a fine-dining kitchen or on a culinary tour of Asia. It started at 17, over a meal of Sichuan cuisine in North Miami Beach. He remembers being invited to a place called Empire Szech-
uan, just across from Oleta River State Park. “That’s when I got to experience a deeper understanding of dining as an art,” Adrian recalls. “After that I was hooked on the exciting flavors and the way Chinese food brought people together.”
That spark stuck with him.Years later, it would evolve into something tangible: a concept that channels the magic of those early meals and brings it to life in the form of family-style dishes, a warm and unpretentious dining room, and a team of culinary professionals who genuinely love what they do.
Double Luck Chinese is a collaborative venture in the truest sense. It unites Tam Pham and Harrison Ramhofer (the minds behind the Michelin Bib Gourmand–winning Vietnamese hotspot Tam Tam); the bar savvy of Over Under owner Brian Griffiths; the im-
pressive talent of pastry chef and front-ofhouse manager Callie Pumo; and, of course, Chef Adrian himself. Together, they’ve transformed the space into something that feels at once elevated and casual, rooted in tradition but unafraid to play.
For Callie, Double Luck represents something deeply personal as well. A proud Miami Shores native, she beams with pride at the chance to bring this kind of thoughtful dining experience so close to home. “It means the world to be able to contribute something special to the community I grew up in,” she says. “We’re not just opening a restaurant – we’re creating a gathering place for the neighborhood.”
That neighborhood-centric approach is central to Double Luck’s ethos. Adrian envisions the restaurant becoming a place where locals
bump into each other unexpectedly, where the servers remember your last order, and where the food lingers in your memory long after the last bite. “We’re trying to evoke the feeling of an old school restaurant with a newer, less stuffy style of service. We may have white tablecloths and folded linens but the whole point of a meal at Double Luck is to have a good time.”
And that good time starts as soon as you sit down. The first taste is a complimentary serving of wonton chips and dip – crispy, comforting, and just enough to pique your appetite. From there, the menu encourages sharing, conversation, and discovery. Dishes arrive family-style, often creating a colorful mosaic across the table. If you like spice, you’re in luck: the Double Cooked Pork Belly, Mapo Tofu, and Dan Dan Noodles bring heat and complexity in equal measure. Prefer something on the milder side? The Crispy Fried Eggplant and Char Siu Ribs deliver richness without overwhelming your palate. And then there’s the Tea Smoked Duck, which might just turn first-timers into loyal regulars.
Of course, the restaurant’s two runaway hits so far are also its most theatrical. The Crab Leg Rangoons, essentially giant crab legs stuffed with cream cheese and deep fried to golden perfection, are a crowd favorite, and are as indulgent as they are inventive. Meanwhile, the Hennessy Orange Chicken arrives quite literally on fire, commanding both attention and phone cameras. They’re fun dishes, sure, but they also represent what Double Luck is all about: making sure that you have a blast while you enjoy some really good food.
That commitment to quality goes beyond presentation. All the meat on the menu is marinated or dry-aged for at least 48 hours, creating deep, rich flavors that can’t
be rushed. Sourcing is intentional and local when possible, with special emphasis on fresh and seasonal Asian ingredients from nearby specialty grocers. The kitchen plays with influences from across China’s regions, from the fiery peppercorns of Sichuan to the inventive preservation techniques of Hunan and the fine, nuanced methods of Cantonese cooking. At the same time, there’s no hesitation in embracing American-Chinese classics with a twist, giving them the kind of love and care usually reserved for haute cuisine.
Vegetarians and gluten-free diners are just as welcome here. Thanks to Chinese cooking’s naturally dairy-light traditions and its flexible flavor bases, Double Luck is able to offer a wide array of meatless and wheat-free options without sacrificing taste. Adrian has been experimenting with tamari in place of soy sauce and rice vinegar in place of the wheat-based black vinegar that’s so common in Sichuan dishes. The result is a menu that feels inclusive without being apologetic.
And while the dining room buzzes with eager diners each night, the team hasn’t forgotten their long-term vision. Right now, Double Luck is technically still a pop-up, operating through May as part of a trial run. The early signs point to overwhelming success: packed tables, glowing word-of-mouth, and a community that seems ready to claim the restaurant as their own. Adrian and his team are expanding staffing and refining the menu in real time, gauging which dishes resonate most and preparing for what’s next.
Though he’s reluctant to share too many details about future plans just yet, Adrian hints at a full-service cocktail program on the horizon. And when asked about the bigger picture, he doesn’t hesitate. “I want to see Double Luck as a part of the neighborhood,” he says. “The restaurant that serves great food and drinks with friendly service; a spot where you might run into your neighbor or friends. The menu will continue to grow and evolve but the sentiment remains the same.”
There’s also talk of community events in the works. With a gorgeous outdoor space available, Callie and the team are hoping to host networking events, seasonal gatherings, and other occasions that bring people together around food. For now, though, the focus is squarely on building a base of regulars and delivering a consistent, elevated experience each night. Social media has been a key tool in spreading the word, but most of the momentum has come the old-fashioned way, through happy customers and word-ofmouth buzz.
And why wouldn’t people be talking? With a chef who combines fine-dining technique with real neighborhood heart, a front-ofhouse experience led by someone who grew up just minutes away, and a menu that walks the line between playful and masterful, Double Luck Chinese is doing more than filling a vacant space. It’s reinvigorating the Miami Shores-area dining scene with energy, thoughtfulness, and joy.
As the weeks go on and the team looks toward a more permanent future, one thing is already certain: in this corner of the city, luck isn’t just a name on the sign; it’s something you can taste, feel, and share with the people around you. Make your reservation today for Double Luck Chinese, 1085 NE 79th Street, Miami, FL 33138. @doubleluckchinese

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, a time to show love and appreciation for the women who nurture, support, and give their all, day in and day out. This year, let’s take a moment to celebrate every kind of mom: the working moms, stay-at-home moms, new moms, grandmothers, and yes, even the beloved pet moms who care for their furry family members like their own.
Whether you’re planning a gift for your own mom, a friend, a partner, or yourself, choosing to shop local not only shows thoughtfulness, it makes a real impact on our community. From beauty salons and wine bars to farmers markets and home décor shops, there are so many meaningful ways to give back to the women who do so much, while also supporting the small businesses that help our neighborhoods thrive.
A little self-care goes a long way. Local salons and spas are offering gift certificates for everything from facials and massages to mani-pedis and full “day of beauty” packages. It’s the perfect way to help mom relax and recharge.
Looking for a gift that’s both practical and personal? Gift cards to local food markets or specialty markets offer a thoughtful way to let mom pick up her favorite ingredients, handmade snacks, or gourmet treats.
Plus, buying local supports farmers, bakers, and makers in our community, many of whom run family-owned businesses passed down through generations.
Raise a Glass at a Local Wine Bar or Brewery
For the mom who enjoys a glass of wine or beer and
good conversation, a gift certificate to a nearby wine bar or brewery is a perfect pick. These cozy, stylish spots are ideal for a night out with friends. Many of these establishments even offer bottles from regional vineyards or locally sourced breweries, adding a personal touch to her sip.
Local home goods stores are a treasure trove of unique, heartfelt gifts, from handcrafted candles and wall art to cozy throws and kitchen essentials. A gift card allows mom to explore and pick out something that speaks to her style. Whether she’s decorating a new space or simply adding a fresh vibe to her favorite room, local shops offer charm and character that big box stores just can’t match.
Let’s not overlook the pet moms, those who care deeply for their dogs, cats, bunnies, and more. Their nurturing spirit and unconditional love deserve recognition too! Local pet boutiques, groomers, vets and bakeries offer plenty of fun, thoughtful gift options. A gift that celebrates their role as a loving caretaker goes a long way.
No matter who you’re celebrating this year, your mom, grandma, sister, friend, or even yourself, consider honoring the occasion with a meaningful, local touch. With so many incredible small businesses in our area and surrounding communities, you’ll find something special for every kind of mom.
Because when we shop local, we don’t just support businesses, we celebrate the moms who make our community stronger every day.

In today’s busy world, many professionals are looking for ways to grow, whether it’s improving leadership skills, expanding their network, or finding more purpose in their work. One powerful, often overlooked path to growth is volunteering.
It’s not just a way to give back. Volunteering builds empathy, sharpens strategic thinking, and creates meaningful connections, all essential for effective leadership. And you don’t need tons of time or resources to get started. Small steps now can lead to big results later. Volunteers report up to 27% higher life satisfaction and lower stress. For professionals, the impact is even greater. Volunteering builds emotional intelligence, improves decision-making, and offers real-world leadership experience. Serving on nonprofit boards – for example, the Chamber of Commerce – teaches governance, collaboration, and long-term planning.
It also broadens your network in authentic ways. You meet people who share your values and you strengthen your personal brand by showing up for your community. According to Deloitte, employees who volunteer through work are 57% more likely to feel aligned with their company’s mission. Many people delay volunteering, waiting for the “right” time. But if you wait for perfect conditions, you might never start. Begin with something small, an hour a month or lending your skills to a cause you care about. Ask around. Chances are, someone you know is already involved.
Volunteering often leads to surprising opportunities. You might start with a local event and end up on a board. Or you might discover a passion that shifts your goals or career path entirely. As former Baxter International CEO Harry Kraemer put it, “Start small, but be open to where volunteering takes you.”
Volunteering helps you grow the skills that matter most: listening, adaptability, and leading in complex situations. These are the traits that set great leaders apart. It’s more than a good deed, it’s a powerful leadership strategy. You grow as a person, make real connections, and help shape a better world.
Why not start today? Take your first step by contacting the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce for volunteering opportunities. You’ll be happy you did.
