Our Village is home to several exceptional beauty studios. They each provide their own artistic expertise, delivering first-class services while remaining committed to the community. This leads me to our cover feature, the story of GG Salon & Spa. Spanning over 45 years by way of legacies, it has become a cornerstone to the Miami Shores area.
This story begins with the once upon a time ‘Beauty by Romy’. After 25+ years the owner was ready to turn in the reins. She wanted to entrust the salon to someone she believed in and would carry on the history. Gloribel Gonzalez’s sister, who happened to work there, was offered that opportunity. However, in the end it was Gloribel that made the leap of faith. Knowing that I was working as an Esthetician at another salon, my sister approached me about the opportunity. Gloribel shares, “At first, I didn’t feel ready either. I had just graduated from beauty school three months earlier and had never owned a business. We also lived in New Jersey and I did not know what to expect, but my husband at the time encouraged me. We honestly got lucky to have been given the opportunity to own a business in such a beautiful village.”
Gloribel secured ownership in 2004 and GG Salon & Spa was official. For her, owning the salon was a way to carry forward a tradition that stretched back decades. Gloribel faced many challenges, like most new owners taking over a business, it required making choices about staff and addressing the salon itself. The salon’s condition was outdated, and Gloribel had to navigate an inherited team of employees who were initially hesitant about her leadership. She recalls, “One of the biggest challenges I faced when starting the business was the state of the salon itself. It had been around for so long that the appearance and equipment were outdated and in need of serious attention. Everything required fixing, but I did not have the assets to make those improvements right away. Another significant challenge was the team. Many of them had been working at the salon for years, and a few were unhappy that they were not offered the opportunity to purchase the business themselves. Introducing my new perspective and ideas was definitely a challenge, as change does not always come easily in such a longestablished environment.” Nonetheless, she forged on and through determination and a vision for the future, she turned the salon into a welcoming, family-friendly space that continues to thrive today. In fact, their following includes families who have been visiting for decades. Gloribel adds, “We’ve
seen clients who have come in while pregnant, and now we’re watching those same babies head off to college, and even getting married!.”

We may not have the evident changes of the seasons here, but we sure have style, and our local beauty salon studios are ready for the task. Here are some of our own experts in the field sharing a few “in season” trends.

1 Christian Parla Co-Owner + Master Stylist at That’s It Salon
This fall, Christian is particularly excited about the season’s trending hues. Deep, earthy shades like chestnuts, mahogany browns, and rich auburns are poised to dominate, creating a perfect palette for the cooler months ahead. “I’m really loving deep burgundy with violet undertones this season,” Christian shares. “It’s bold yet versatile, adding a striking contrast to the softer tones of autumn.”
Christian’s process begins with a comprehensive consultation to deliver a look that feels both personalized and natural. “Collaboration is key,” he explains. “I ask my clients to bring in photos of what they want – and sometimes, just as importantly, what they don’t want.” While trends can be inspiring, Christian emphasizes the importance of adapting them to suit each client’s natural attributes. “Not every trend works for every person,” he notes. “I enjoy incorporating seasonal elements into a look that complements someone’s complexion and hair texture – whether that’s subtle caramel lowlights or a rich espresso base.”
As fall weather sets in, hair care becomes just as essential as the color itself. Christian advises focusing on hydration to maintain vibrancy and shine. “Moisture is key,” he stresses. “Hydrating masks or leave-in conditioners are a must. do.” While Gloriane initially pursued a business degree and explored other industries, her love for the beauty world pulled her back in. In 2021, when Gloribel decided to sell the salon, it was Gloriane who stepped forward to take the reins this time, carrying on the family tradition. The transition from Gloribel’s leadership to Gloriane’s was a natural one. Though Gloribel had her reservations about passing on the challenges of owning a salon, she eventually realized that it was predestined. Gloriane had both the passion, the drive, and the skills needed to continue the business. Afterall, her daughter had been “in the business” all along and actively developing her own hair line. Gloribel mentions, “Letting go was difficult, but seeing how much she cared for the salon made it easier.” For Gloriane, taking over was both an exciting and daunting step. She mentions, “I was not always interested in owning the salon. After graduating high school, I knew I wanted to own a business, but I wasn’t sure what kind. I pursued a degree in Business Management at FIU and explored different industries, including finance, insurance and human resources. After some time, I realized I missed the beauty world, something I already had a lot of knowledge and experience in, but it was scary. When I first bought the salon, I was still juggling my own career. But I knew this was where my heart was and it was an honor to continue the work my mother started and bring my own vision to it.”
Like her mom in the beginning, she made some changes. Gloriane, “I have worked to modernize the salon look, creating a more spacious and contemporary environment while still keeping the warm, homey atmosphere that’s always been part of our identity. I have also honored my mother’s legacy by continuing to add eco-friendly and healthier products to keep up with natural beauty and wellness”. The salon’s long-time clients have witnessed the transformation firsthand, from the days when it was primarily a space for mothers and grandmothers, to now, where entire families come to relax and bond. “We have clients who have made this
their Sunday tradition for years,” Gloriane states with pride. “Seeing that loyalty and knowing how much this salon means to the community makes me incredibly proud.” It is important to note, that GG Salon & Spa is also dedicated to hiring from within the community - in fact, three of their team members, Rebekah, Maryanne, and Esteffany, all graduated from Doctors Charter School in Miami Shores.
Gloriane envisions further growth, including expanding the salon’s offerings and creating an online store to reach more customers. She also hopes to continue the family tradition by one day passing the salon down to her own daughter, whose initials, fittingly, are also GG. For both Gloriane and Gloribel, GG Salon & Spa is more than just a business. It’s a reflection of their hard work, dedication, and love for the community they serve. As Gloriane puts it, “The foundation my mom built is strong, and with it, we will continue to grow while staying true to the values that
have always made GG Salon & Spa special.”
