COMMUNITY Being part of a community makes us feel as though we are part of something that is greater than ourselves. It gives us opportunities to connect with people and reach for goals that are ahead of us. I firmly believe that community with one another is essential for our well being. God didn't create us to live life by ourselves, he created us to join with one another and be united. Being a part of a community allows us to support one another, interact, share experiences, and help each other when it is needed the most.

This quarter's newsletter highlights just how much we value community. The aspect of community and meeting its needs is one of our four pillars to success at Grace Health. At Grace Health, we strongly believe that if we are not helping to meet the needs of individuals around us, then we are not succeeding at our mission.. We desire a strong sense of community within our team at Grace Health. Whether it's new hires, or individuals that we are celebrating who have been at Grace Health for 10 years, we want everyone to feel like family. We are also an organization that expands outside of the clinic walls to meet the needs of others in our community. As you read this newsletter, you will see many different efforts that our clinics and outreach team have generously participated in to help numerous families and individuals during this 4th quarter. I am so proud and honored to be a part of an organization that makes sharing and showing the love of Jesus Christ with others a priority. Looking back on this past year makes me even more excited about the future that is to come at Grace Health. As we finish 2021, I am so encouraged by our staff and the accomplishments that we have reached over this past year. I would like to encourage you to read through this quarter's newsletter and to be proud and motivated to achieve even more great accomplishments in 2022. "May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had." - Romans 15:5 - Michael Stanley

Diabetes Awareness

Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support classes can help change lives! November is National Diabetes Month, a month focused on organizations teaming up all over the country to bring attention to diabetes. It's easy to see the need for a diabetes awareness month when according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), one in five people in the United States who has diabetes doesn't even know that they have it. That's 7.3 million people out of a total 34..2 million who aren't aware they are living with this disease and the health risks that come with it. Each year, there is a different focus on diabetes awareness. This years' focus is on prediabetes and preventing diabetes. Prediabetes is a serious health condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. According to the CDC, more than 1 in 3 U.S. adults have prediabetes, that's 88 million people, and the majority of people don't even know they have it! Diabetes puts people at risk for nerve damage, cardiovascular disease, foot and limb injuries, vision problems, and other complications that arise from having uncontrolled blood sugar, as the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus cautions. Not to mention, diabetes raises a person’s risk of developing serious COVID-19, per the CDC. Consequently, understanding diabetes and how to manage it is more important than ever. Grace Health is part of a diabetes learning collaborative through UK Healthcare, Kentucky Public Health, and KHIE. The collaborative started in June 2021 and runs through June of 2022. The collaborative focuses on diabetes education and referring patients to our local health departments for DSMES (Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support) classes. A patient of Alice Ward, a family nurse practitioner at our Bell County Clinic, has had great success with her classes. Alice's patient's A1C pre-DSMES was 9.9 post-DSMES 9.1. She lost a total of 35 pounds, by walking 20 minutes a day - 7 days a week, and successfully met a goal of eating 3 balanced meals a day while limiting her food intake after 7 pm. She stated, "the sessions helped me so much in learning to make good choices." We encourage all Grace Health providers to utilize the resource of referring patients to DSMES classes!

Influenza Season Influenza Prevention December 5th-11th was observed as National Influenza Vaccination Week. National Influenza Vaccination Week is an annual observance in December to remind everyone that there's still time for people 6 months and older to get vaccinated against the flu to be protected during the upcoming season. Vaccination is particularly important for people who are at a higher risk of developing serious flu complications This includes people with certain chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. According to the CDC, in past flu seasons, 9 out of 10 adults hospitalized for flu had at least one underlying medical condition. Since flu viruses are constantly changing and protection from vaccination decreases over time, getting a flu vaccine every year is the best way to prevent the flu. Flu vaccines are the only vaccines that protect against influenza and are proven to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death. Some flu symptoms to be aware of are: fever or feeling feverish/chills cough sore throat runny or stuffy nose muscle or body aches headaches fatigue (tiredness) vomiting and diarrhea (this is more common in children than adults) *It is important to note that not everyone with the flu will have a fever.
