PEOPLE We do not typically put an emphasis on any of our four pillars, however, there is one pillar that is particularly important to our organization - PEOPLE. From the very beginning, it was people who volunteered their time to rip up carpet and rebuild the Gray Clinic. Still today, people are the reason we are able to fulfill our mission, build our organization, and provide healthcare advancements and care to this region. People -- YOU -- are the root of who we are! This newsletter is to celebrate you!

This quarter's newsletter highlights just a handful of our entire amazing staff. As we continue to grow and work toward our medical campus, one objective we have is to build our healthcare team. Recently, we welcomed Dr. Otto Umana, OBGYN into our Women's Care team. He quickly became familiar with our processes and has integrated with our team seamlessly. We will be welcoming more providers in the coming months and we could not be more excited! For the second quarter of 2021, we focus not only on our people, but on our growth as well. In short time of business, we have seen exponential growth and care in our service areas. While external growth can be seen easily, our internal growth should be celebrated too. From relationship we have developed with Corbin Independent Schools in their Biomedical program to own internal certification course for CCMAs; we constantly have reasons to celebrate ourselves.

Ecclesiastes 3:4 tells us that there is "A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance." We all love the celebratory moments, but it's the weeping and mourning that bring more difficult days. On pages 8 and 9 of this newsletter, we have done our best to recognize the late Dr. Truman Perry. He was, and will forever be, an instrumental piece of our great and growing organization. We honor him and celebrate his life as we attempt to move forward. In remembering him, I hope we all strive for the same work ethic, the love for our community, and service to our coworkers. "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." -Proverbs 16:3 - Michael Stanley

02 2021 Q2: PEOPLE

Human Resources Welcome Dr. Otto Umana! Senior Director of Human Resources, Kim Bingham, started with Grace Health 8 years ago and has witnessed an extraordinary amount of growth throughout her time with the organization. Kim shared that when she started at Grace Health in 2013, Grace Health had under 50 employees; now there are almost 300. In that same time, Grace Health has expanded from three sites, to 10 clinics and 3 pharmacies. Kim explained that the people at Grace Health are what makes it stand out from other healthcare organizations. Grace Health has had several amazing additions to the team recently, one of which is a new OBGYN, Dr. Otto Umana.

Dr. Otto Umana

Dr. Umana started as an OBGYN at our Women's Clinic on May 21, 2021. Dr. Umana is originally from Nigeria, West Africa and has always had a passion for helping others. Both of Dr. Umana's parents were nurses in Nigeria, which led to his interest in learning and practicing medicine. Dr. Umana shared that he saw a lot of women dying during child birth due to a lack of proper care, leading him to become an obstetrician and gynecologist. Dr. Umana originally started his study in Nigeria and then moved to the United States in 1999 with his wife and attended Texas Tech. He then completed his residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. After Dr. Umana finished his residency, he worked at several places in Chambersberg, Pennsylvania and then moved to Piedmont Hospital in Jasper, Georgia. He then felt the need for a change and the desire to be able to freely share the gospel of Jesus Christ with his patients. He saw a position open at Grace Health, he said it would be the perfect fit for him because it fulfills the mission that he originally dedicated his life to with medicine. Grace Health is so excited to have Dr. Umana as a part of the team! His passion and love for people and the Lord lines up directly with our mission statement. The Human Resources team does an excellent job of providing Grace Health with the best employees and caring for those employees. Thank you to the Human Resources team for going above and beyond through the recruitment efforts, problem-solving, training opportunities, and serving the entire community.

The Growth of Grace Health

Grace Health has been experiencing substantial growth. Grace Health has shown a tremendous amount of growth since the start of the organization in 2008. Dr. Kelly Evans, Chief Medical Officer at Grace Health, has been a part of Grace Health's team since 2013 and has been able to experience this growth from multiple angles. Dr. Evans came to the Manchester area in 1999 due to the opportunity for loan repayment services offered to providers working in qualified communities. Dr. Evans explained that she began looking for a change and was intrigued with Grace Health due to it being a faith-based organization that focused on providing patient-centered medical care, Dr. Evans joined the team in 2013 as a physician before becoming the Chief Medical Officer in 2015. In 2013, Grace Health was looking to bring on Women's Care and did so in 2014. Grace Health was then able to acquire Watts, Perry, and Perry, the largest family practice in Corbin in 2015. During 2017, Grace Health brought on the largest internal medicine practice in Corbin - Turner, Whitley, & Morton. Dr. Samuel Kreis and his Mountain View practice in London, KY came on board in 2019. Dr. Indira Moodumane joined forces with Dr. Cecile DelMundo in 2020 for the opening of Grace Health Pediatric Clinic. Since then, Grace Health has continued to grow with the opening of the Levi Center Clinic this year and will be opening it's 4th pharmacy soon. Dr. Evans stated that when she first started, Grace Health had 3 clinics in 3 counties, and now the organization is preparing for a large medical campus and has a presence in 6 different counties. Grace Health has also been expanding in the services provided within the clinics to better serve patients. Dr. Evans shared that the board identified a need for behavioral health and took action to add that service within the organization. Grace Health also offers services including dental care to children, immunizations, nursing home services, schoolbased health services, and counseling services.

The Growth of Grace Health Cont. The growth of Grace Health can easily be seen by physical locations, but that's only a small piece of the story. Dr. Evans believes the growth is due in large part to living out the mission of the organization. She expressed that people in the community witness the staff and providers fulfilling the mission statement and desire to be a part of such a team. Whether and employee, patient, or community member, the growth of Grace Health is attributed to each stakeholder. The administration truly believes that Grace Health has the best employees. The leadership and all staff are dedicated to the mission and committed to providing access to affordable and quality health care to everyone. The future is promising for Grace Health and the communities that it serves!

Another key to growth in the opportunities offered to employees for personal growth. Our most recent class of Certified Clinical Medical Assistants! Grace Health is continuing to build our health care team that is focused on YOU! Congratulations to our newest CCMAs! Lindsey Anders, Bill Hampton, LaCreasha Howard, Ashley Karr, Emilea Lester, Dustin McQueen, Desiray Pickard, Chasity Taylor

Outreach

Grace Health is passionate about reaching out to individuals in our community Since the beginning, Grace Health has had a passion for outreach. From the very first employee, the leadership has built a fantastic outreach team that represents the organization and cares for each service area community as well. Mike Wynn is one of the Community Outreach and Enrollment Specialists at Grace Health and has been a part of the team for over 5 years. Mike shared that he saw an advertisement for a job opening at Grace Health that had a vision and mission that ran parallel to his heart and it drew him in. It grabbed his attention because he knew that this health care company was serving a purpose that was bigger than himself and he desired to be a part of it. Mike and the rest of the Outreach team help serve on the front lines at Grace Health. The outreach team is involved in community events, building networks, and carrying the message of Grace Health beyond the walls of the clinics. The outreach team serves at a wide variety of events and provides outreach efforts to reach individuals in the service area communities. The team provides school-based health services, participates in health fairs, and joins events with local health departments. They also take part in an ongoing effort called the Empty Stocking Fund where they help host a Christmas party for 500-800 children and provide gifts and a Christmas meal. All the while, the entire Outreach Team helps connect individuals with affordable health care options. Grace Health's outreach team honors and pursues the organization's mission - to show the love and share the truth of Jesus Christ to southeastern Kentucky through access to compassionate, high quality, primary health care for the whole person. The outreach team focuses on reaching as many people as possible within the communities to collectively meet their healthcare needs and help with their financial and spiritual needs as well.

"In all things, I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" - Acts 20:35

Outreach Cont. Our team is getting involved in community events. On April 20, 2021, Grace Health had the amazing opportunity of being the sponsor for the baseball game between Corbin High School and Williamsburg High School. The Chief Operating Officer, Jeff Campbell, was selected to throw the first pitch to start the game and the Grace Health logo was painted down the first base line. The Outreach Team hosted a Grace Health booth where they passed out gifts to the fans and informed them of the services provided by Grace Health and health insurance opportunities available to them. Pictured below -- Outreach Team members Mike Wynn, Alesia Anderson, and Carla Henson worked with the Corbin Rotary Club and set up a Grace Health booth at the Dave Hudson Memorial Golf Scramble on May 7, 2021. This golf scramble raised money for scholarships for seniors in the Tri-County area and allowed the Outreach Team to also share with the community about Grace Health and health insurance options. We are very thankful to have opportunities to get out in our community and reach people!

In Loving Memory of Dr. Truman Perry Honoring and Celebrating the Life of Dr. Truman Perry Grace Health would like to honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Truman Perry who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 11, 2021. Dr. Perry received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kentucky in May, 1990. Upon graduation, he served in the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, FL where he completed a Family Practice Internship and Family Practice Residency. He then moved to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before moving to Cherry Point, North Carolina to continue his work as the Staff Family Physician for the Naval Hospital. June of 1997 brought him back to Corbin, KY where he worked as a partner at Barton, Watts, & Perry and helped grow it to become Corbin’s largest family practice. On May 2, 2016, that practice joined with Grace Health to continue offering quality care to patients in the Corbin area. In the last 24 years of practice, Dr. Perry and his team have been faithful and dedicated to serving this community and his commitment to family practice has made the entire organization stronger. He truly set a high standard of quality for all and will forever be remembered within Grace Health and the community. Dr. Perry has been a strong follower of Christ and a member of Grace on the Hill Methodist Church.

The staff at the Bishop Street Clinic wore shirts in remembrance and honor of Dr. Perry. They are thankful to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Perry and witness the impact he had on his co-workers, patients, and the community during his years of practice.

08 2021 Q2: PEOPLE

A Hero in our Community Community members shared about Dr. Perry's impact on our community. “He [Dr. Perry] worked as a doctor in my uncle's practice for many years before they retired and was such an asset to them. They both loved him very much and were so proud of him. He was also my personal doctor and my friend. The loss to the community can't be overstated. Truman was a rare talent as a doctor and also as a member of this community. He took his responsibility to us very seriously and there was nothing he wouldn't do for those he loved and cared for. He fought so hard for his health to overcome a serious family history of heart disease. It's just heartbreaking and stunning to us all. Please pray for his family, friends, staff and patients as they navigate life without Truman, it will be so hard.” - Mayor Suzie Razmus "To say that Dr. Truman Perry was a pillar of the Corbin community is an understatement. He was well-respected, loved and gave his heart and soul to his practice, through which he helped so many people. He was an inspiration to many, myself included. Often times when I would be working downtown I would see him running. He ran every day and was an exemplar of fitness, health, hard work and dedication. Through his practice he helped so many people in the community, and always went above and beyond to ensure that his patients were taken care of. He was funny, gregarious and just an all-around nice person. Corbin’s loss of Dr. Truman Perry was devastating, and will be felt by the community for decades to come. He was a blessing and will forever be remembered for his talent, love and kindness. I am grateful to have had the chance to know and work with him." - Maggy Monhollen, Corbin Tourism Director "There are certain people you cross paths with in life that impact you from the moment you meet them--Truman was one of those people for me. I first met him when I started dating (and eventually married) his first cousin, Tonya. I have memories that date back to Truman’s days of playing football for Corbin High School. Tonya and I would travel with his parents to away games. Even at a young age, I knew Truman would influence people for the rest of his life. He had that knack about him. When Truman eventually resided back to Corbin, it was astonishing to watch as people flocked to him. It seemed as if everyone I knew wanted him to be their family doctor. Truman was my own family’s doctor from that moment on. The difference between the way Truman practiced medicine, compared to others, is the way he listened. He listened to a patient as if he were listening to his best friend. He took the time. He had genuine concern and care for each and every one. In this day and age, that’s simply hard to find. Not only has the loss of Dr. Truman Perry hurt my own family’s hearts; the loss of Dr. Perry has hurt the hearts of our community. Truman--as a doctor, a friend, and all around good guy--will never be replaced!" - Marlon Sams, City Manager

Patient Testimonial Congratulations Dr. Steve Morton Congratulations to Dr. Steve Morton on winning the People's Choice Award for best MD in Corbin. This is an award that is voted on by the people in the community and Grace Health is so proud of Dr. Morton for winning this title! One of Dr. Morton's long-term patients, Wilma Dugger, was asked to share her experiences with Dr. Morton and share how much he cares about the patients he serves. Wilma Dugger is a 90 year old patient of Dr. Morton's who has known him since he moved back to Corbin 22 years ago. Wilma not only knows Dr. Morton as a doctor, but she was also his neighbor for many years. She shared that them met after he married his wife, Kim, who was a friend of one of Wilma's granddaughters. Wilma said that she not only loved Dr. Morton as a doctor, but as a neighbor too. She explained that Dr. Morton did anything to help her in a time of need. When her husband became sick and in the hospital in Lexington, Dr. Morton and his wife would cook dinner and have it ready for her by the time she returned from Lexington each night because they knew she would be exhausted. Ms. Dugger appreciates Dr. Morton always taking his time to care for her as a patient. She explained that Dr. Morton found several things wrong with her health, including Atrial Fibrillation. He took extra caution and sent her to a heart specialist which led to her having a pacemaker put in. Wilma stated that thanks to Dr. Morton's listening ear and cautious health care, she feels better than she has in a long time. "I'm so glad that Dr. Morton won the People's Choice Award because he really deserves it and we appreciate him so much." Grace Health is so thankful to have a doctor like Steve Morton who not only represents Grace Health in a positive light inside the clinic walls, but outside of the clinics also. Alongside Dr. Morton is a wonderful support staff. Thank you to the rest of the employees at Grace Health for caring for the people in our community so well and holding true to the core values that serves as the foundation fore Grace Health.

Staff Testimonial Candis Fox shares about her experience with Grace Health In 2008 Candis Fox enrolled in the Medical Assistant Program at Somerset Community in London and graduated in 2010. She then joined the Grace Health team when she moved to Corbin in 2015 and began working at the Gray Clinic. It was obvious how much she loved caring for people! She worked at the Gray Clinic until 2017 before transferring to the Women's Care Clinic where she also excelled. When Grace Health opened the new Pediatric Clinic in January of 2020, Candis served as the office lead. She did such an excellent job of getting the clinic started, that she was asked to help start the new Levi Center Clinic earlier this year with her leadership and consistent success. Candis was asked to take on the Front Office Lead roll at the Women's Care Clinic this summer, where she currently serves.

Candis Fox Front Office Lead

Candis has been a part of the organization for 6 years and plays a vital role in the growth and success Grace Health has achieved over the past several years. Candis is an example of the care and dedication we seek to serve patients of Grace Health. Candis expressed that she believes Grace Health stands out from other health care organizations because the entire staff is focused on taking care of the whole person. She went on to share that Grace Health has done a great job of expanding the services that are available, whether it's for primary care, dental, behavioral health, financial needs, or spiritual needs. During her time with Grace Health, there have been many instances that she has witnessed someone going the extra mile to help patients with their needs. One ongoing effort that made an impact to her is how employees donate one dollar if they wear jeans that day, At the end of the year, the staff picks a needy family -- sometimes even multiple families -- and buys them clothes, Christmas dinner, toys for the kids, and other items to try and meet their needs. Candis stated "I just feel really blessed to work for an organization like Grace Health that provides so much for the patients and gives the employees the opportunity to do what they love and to grow. I am so grateful for the opportunities that Grace Health has given me." Candis Fox is just a single example of how one person can make an impact. Grace Health is honored to have almost 300 employees to brag on in the same way!
