Ruby the Amazing Delta Therapy Dog!

Ruby was adopted from the Logan Animal Management Centre. She was fourteen months old and is a Staffy cross breed. Ruby is a very social dog and loves contact with people as well as her furry friends. I had seen information about Delta Therapy Dogs and thought that Ruby might be a suitable candidate and it was something we could do together as I had recently retired.

Ruby and I attended the and Assessment Program in Logan where the dogs are assessed on their skills such as controlled walking, leaving food and taking food gently and reaction to distractions. With a pass in her paws it was then my turn to attend the Handler Seminar.

We visit Seasons Aged Care at Waterford and have the pleasure of meeting many lovely residents who get so much enjoyment out of their visit with Ruby. Many residents have had to leave pets behind and miss them terribly whilst for others it may be a first contact with a pet. It is wonderful to see the interaction between Ruby and the residents and the beautiful smiles she puts on their faces.

For me Monday morning is the best day of the week. To see Ruby getting so excited when I start to groom her then put on her Delta Bandanna and she flies into the car ready to visit all her friends. It is fabulous that Ruby and I are able to meet so many beautiful people.

Jimboomba Organics

Established originally as Jimboomba Organics in 2012, we have been in the business of organic food for almost half a decade now.

The business was founded by a caring mother who saw a need for affordable and easy-toaccess, chemical-free foods for her children and family. Realizing that she would probably never find that kind of food locally, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

Thus began the story of Wholefood Harvest.

Set to relaunch within the coming month as Wholefood Harvest, this little local enterprise was created purely to help people find the right kind of food in a world filled with toxic nonsense. Today, this little online store supplies locally grown and healthy foods to hundreds of people in the local community.

Wholefoods Harvest is presently run by Mel and Glenn Hawkins, both of whom take health and nutrition very seriously. After all, that’s why they set up the business in the first place. Mel comes from line of farmers and she grew up on one herself. That’s why she knows how valuable freshly produced food can be. In fact, she proudly attributes her stellar health to a daily diet of farm fresh produce.

After looking at how commercial food was ruining people’s health in her community and due to her own inability to access healthy food in an urban environment, Mel decided that it was time to do something about it. That’s how the idea for Wholefoods Harvest came about.

Her idea didn’t take too long to become a reality and she had all the support she needed from her city clicker husband, Glenn. Of course, Glenn didn’t really have a problem because of his own penchant for working in the land. In 2007, Glenn learned about permaculture and sustainable living, which eventually became his passion.

Glenn went about designing farms, thanks to his newly acquired knowledge and skill. Now, he owns one of his own.

Working together as a team, Glenn and Mel have made a major impact in the community with their venture. Jimboomba Organics is a name that has earned a lot of respect and admiration from people. Establishing this venture has allowed the husband-wife duo to address dietary concerns among concerned families who, once upon a time, did not have access to affordable, tasty, and nutritious food options. In meeting this need, Jimboomba can Shop Local! Organics has also been able to offer support to many local farmers and food producers.

They continue to help families take control of what they consume and motivate them to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Jimboomba Organics has become a brand that believes in wholesome nutrition and as a result, we strive to provide our customers with only the healthiest and naturally grown food products.

We offer a wide range of organic food items in an attempt to make it easier for individuals and families to find healthier alternatives to what they would normally find in a run of the mill store. We offer several products under a wide range of categories.

Plus, we source our food products only from local producers. In the time that we have been functioning, we have built strong relationships with the farmers and food producers within our local community.

People in the community today have understood that consuming natural or organic foods offer a ton of benefits.

Unfortunately, in the past, accessing such food products was next to impossible. They were either too expensive or extremely difficult to obtain.

Introducing Fun Theory to the City of Logan

Feeling connected to where you live is a vital ingredient to the recipe of creating sustainable and resilient communities. If you feel happy and connected to where you live, you’re more likely to care about it, protect it and participate in the community.

When researching sustainable cities for the City of Logan recently, I discovered an amazing theory being implemented in Sweden that creates positive community behaviours from making our everyday activities fun.

It’s called ‘Fun theory’.

Imagine if you could have fun recycling, or instead of staring at your phone at the bus stop, have fun and connect with other people waiting?

What about making it fun to do short bursts of exercise at one of our 900+ parks in Logan?

What if we installed a start and finish line 1km loop at some of our parks that has an electronic tally board that records the times for the week.

Where the people can record their name and then race against others in the community and interact whilst encouraging exercise?

Making the simple action of placing waste in bins fun would help garner a paradigm shift in community behaviour towards better disposal rates, thus reducing litter in our community and the subsequent council costs of litter patrols. This is achieved in Sweden by installing electronic sounds in the bins that create the illusion of litter falling down a mine shaft, dubbed ‘the world’s deepest bin’.

These are but a few examples of what is possible for Logan to increase happiness in our city. The possibilities are really quite exciting!

Fun theory is a simple idea that can be tailored to the individual situation.

The possibilities are only limited by the imagination.

As we all know, exercise is a fundamental part of living a healthy life. To increase walking and cycling is to increase happiness and public health. Active lifestyles lead to more engaged and healthier communities so surely the public money spent on rising health costs should be spent on

YFS to launch new hub for Logan Beaudesert region!

YFS is launching YFS Connect, a new Financial Counselling, Capability and Resilience Hub to support vulnerable people in the Logan Beaudesert region, with housing, tenancy and financial issues.

YFS Connect will build on the good work done to date by YFS’ Information, Referral and Assessment Service (IRAS) which in the last financial year responded to almost 9,000 requests for information and advice.

Homelessness and financial crisis accounted for 58% and nearly 30% of these requests.

It will also incorporate YFS’ financial servicesMoney Smart and Financial Counselling to deliver crisis responses, case work and counselling for clients experiencing financial stress.

YFS CEO Cath Bartolo said YFS Connect brings together YFS’ local expertise with an integrated model of service that will help people move from crisis to financial resilience.

“We’re very pleased to offer a broader platform of services that will change people’s lives by building their skills and their ability to overcome crises,” she said.

The hub will be the first point of contact for new clients at YFS and will provide services like:

Garden Clippings

So… you don’t have a green thumb… but you want to grow something in the backyard just to be able to teach the kids the fundamentals of how our food grows.

Don’t despair! I have compiled a list of hardy easy to grow food that you and your kids can have fun growing!

Carrots and radishes. These are fun and easy to grow. Mix both packets of seeds together with a tablespoon of clean sand. Why? As the radishes grown they spread the carrots apart.

Radishes are picked earlier than the carrots. The sand also spreads the seed out as the seed is like dust! Follow the care and planting instructions on the packet.

Strawberries! These are fun to grow either in the garden, pot or hanger.

Kids will love watching the fruit form. If planting in the garden, build up a mound so water can drain and fruit will form high and dry.

Passionfruit! Do you have a spare fence that would look great with a beautiful passionfruit vine draped over it? Not only are passionfruit great to eat, they have beautiful flowers and dark glossy leaves.

4.

Zucchini. Zucchini is so versatile! Let the kids leave one in the garden to see how big it will grow! The flowers can also be used in a salad. Zucchini can be added to dishes, cooked on its own or even stuffed and baked in the oven.

5.

Lemons. A lemon tree in the backyard may turn your child into an entrepreneur… or so the movies would have you believe. But who knows… maybe you will one day be the proud owner of a lemonade stand.

Dwarf beans. These can be eaten straight from the vine if you have not used any sprays. So juicy and sweet.

Peas are also easy to grow and can also be eaten straight from the vine… that way you do not have to de-pod them!

7.

Silverbeet. I adore silverbeet and you can even grow rainbow coloured silverbeet! I stick the plain old green one, but I am sure the kids will love growing rainbow plants.

8.

Alfa Alfa sprouts. These can be grown in a container on your kitchen bench!

Even people with small gardens can grow these. Have some fun… make a troll out of clay and grow some troll Alfa Alfa sprout hair.

More Museum for Logan Village

LOGAN Village Museum is set to alleviate some of its space challenges, with news an additional building is being constructed to house some of its exhibits.

The concrete slab for the building was poured just before Christmas, with construction on the 11m x 11m building to begin on February 2.

Logan City Council are funding the building, which is being constructed by BoysTown, and Logan Village Museum president Allan Pettigrew said the museum and community centre were indebted to Council and particularly Division 9 Councillor Phil Pidgeon for their support.

“Without Phil, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said.

Mr Pettigrew said the existing museum – housed in an old railway fettler’s cottage with an annexe shed – was “bursting at the seams” with exhibits and somewhere new was desperately needed to house them.

“We need a lot more space,” he said.

The museum and community centre approached Council late last year for assistance and Mr Pettigrew said the groups were extremely grateful for all the help they had received to make the new building a reality.

He said as just one an example of some of the exhibits needing more space in the museum, curator Coralyn Cowin had assembled 175 dossiers on the area’s

ANZACs, with some of the dossiers being half an inch thick.

There had also been an increase in exhibit and item donations of late, Mr Pettigrew said, with something sparking people’s interest in the area’s history.

Mr Pettigrew said the new building project was being overseen by Arnold Marcello from Logan City Council, with construction being managed by BoysTown representatives Garry Smith and Lorelle Vergara.

Logan Village resident and draftsman Mike Adams – who also helped design the Pioneer Walk feature - drew up the designs for the new museum building, Mr Pettigrew said.

The new building will be designed to keep with the heritage character of the Logan Village Green and construction is expected to be completed by the middle of the year, weather permitting.

roads, school funding and health care. We have started 2016 with an announcement from the Government that in partnership with QR and Logan City Council, we will build an emergency vehicle crossing at Bethania Railway Station. If the Bethania boom gates are down this will allow emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, ambulances and police vehicles to still cross the tracks and reach people in urgent need.

That’s a fact!

This is a very exciting time for parents and students! Back to school! How exciting for new students, students entering high school, TAFE or University… Enjoy this time while you can… the year may get a little bumpy.

With a high number of retirement villages and elderly citizens in Bethania, this crossing was well overdue and I am glad I can report back to Bethania residents with this result.

This documentary will show how our community is overcoming false prejudices and stereotypes and celebrating its strengths and diversity. I will be watching the program and hope that many people in Queensland can watch and see how resilient and energised our community is to reach its potential. This year I will continue my work as the Member for Waterford and as a Minister in the State Government.

So, here it is, 2016. I’m assuming if you are reading this, you made it through the Christmas festivities intact.

Hopefully, if you had time off it was enjoyable. If you worked, let’s hope you didn’t have to work too hard.

One obvious thing that is coming up fairly fast is the upcoming Council Elections. With what must be a record number of candidates in some divisions, many members of the Logan community have some serious research to do if they want their vote to count.

In other news, our sporting prowess within Logan City isn’t only footballers, netballers or

Dave and his family are Bethania locals. He and his wife often take their daughter out and enjoy what Logan has to offer, meeting people, catching up with friends, especially a coffee with other locals at the local shops where they are well known to the regulars there.

Their daughter sadly had her two birds stolen recently. A white Corella was stolen on December 16 and a grey and pink Galah on January 6. Clearly someone knew they were there as they were not visible from the road.

Dave’s not looking for retribution or making trouble for anyone. He just wants the birds returned so his daughter can get her pets back and get back into her routine, which is so important for someone in her situation. He asks if anyone knows of the birds whereabouts, can you drop him an email to dmanson3@ gmail.com and let him know. It would mean a lot to his wheelchair bound daughter and his family. And let’s not forget Angela Beard. A former student of both Waterford State School and Marsden State High School, she has dreamed of pulling on the Australian jersey at senior level in women’s football for several years.

Already playing for the Brisbane Roar as a fullback, she was named the November nominee for the W-League’s Young Footballer of the Year 2015-16 Award. That’s impressive in itself.

But her dream is closer to reality when she recently got called into the 22-player Matildas training squad, her first time at senior level.

That call up gives her a chance to impress the national team coach Alen Stajcic ahead of the side’s Rio 2016 Olympic qualifiers late next month’ Hopefully she succeeds in making the selection, which will be an incredible moment for the Logan local. We wish her every success.

If you are into less strenuous activities, Logan is hosting its third visit of the famous Ministry of Food by Jamie Oliver. The philosophy is simple; knowing how to cook healthy food from scratch is a positive approach to your health, happiness and finances.

According to media reports, a comprehensive evaluation of Jamie Oliver's back to basics home cooking skills program conducted by Deakin University and University of Melbourne, revealed that participants who complete the course increased their vegetable consumption, were more confident in cooking meals from scratch and spent less on take away foods.

That has got to be a good thing, right?

Ice Skaters. We also have in our ranks arguably one of the best referees ever to preside over a game, although he is now retired - Dave Manson. He is also the focus of a heartfelt plea asking for our communities help.

I’m not sure if the food is that much healthier or the experience is much less stressful, but it is nice to know Logan’s food choices are maturing and the quality of restaurants in the City are improving. Now, the choices are literally endless. You don’t have to settle for ‘just fast food’. The multicultural nature of the city gives us the opportunity to try something different, driving a modern trend in food preparation and taste. It can only get better. #1 on trip advisor for meals in Beenleigh is the Bull n Barra restaurant at Club Beenleigh. Not too many years ago, that would have been unheard of. #1 Restaurant in Waterford (#5 in Logan City) is Berlin Bistro at Holmview. Only a few years ago we had to go further afield to enjoy a ‘quality’ evening out. Now, we don’t have to leave our city boundaries to have a memorable dining experience.

The level of ‘entertainment’ residents indulge in is a pointer to the overall economic health of a city. A healthy restaurant trade is the sign of a confident city. Logan seems to fit that description.

So, as we start another year, we will no doubt have good and bad times ahead of us, but let’s hope that we can stay positive and help the city showcase it’s community spirit. We do have a great community and we have a lot of growth targeted for the area in the coming years. Let’s each do our bit to make sure we don’t lose that community feel that we have embraced over the last couple of years.

Newspapers and magazines, cardboard. Not shredded as this cannot be sorted Glass bottles and jars; Plastic soft drink, milk, ice-cream, margarine and yoghurt, meat and vegie trays and containers. Only if any of these are stamped with a triangle and the numbers 1- 6 Aluminium soft drink cans and foil trays, steel cans, pressure paks (such as those that contained fly and hairspray)

A combination of manual and leading edge technology is used to sort material and a lot is sorted by hand, and, for that reason, it’s nice to rinse out containers. Recycled products are manufactured and dispatched to locations locally, and all over the world.

What should I not put in the recycling bin?

Plastic bags, plastic wrap, clothes, toys, furniture, car parts, foam, rubber, polystyrene, nappies (even if there is a recycling symbol on the box!) white goods and household items (i.e. toasters; yes people have put them in) crockery and broken crockery.
