Welcome to our third edition of the Gotta Love Logan e-Newsletter! We are so excited about our community based e-Newsletter which is written by the community, about the community for the community! How good is that! If you have an idea for a story, please let us know! It can be about the history of a local business, community group, sports club or it could be about achievements or someone who has done something extraordinary!

Woodhill Billy Cart Derby Saturday 25th July 2015

Woodhill State School is a small school situated 10 minutes north of Beaudesert and 10 minutes south of Jimboomba. Our school dates back to 1873 when William Everdell, an early settler to the area, donated the land for the school to be built. Woodhill is a wonderful school with history and tradition and one of these traditions is the annual Billy Cart Derby, which has been running for more than 20 years.

The Billy Cart Derby is our school’s major fundraiser for the year, which enables the P & C to help the school improve facilities and buy essential educational and sporting resources. In 2014, we funded the construction of brand new terracing for the school’s sports oval.

Woodhill State School’s annual Billy Cart Derby is an action packed and entertaining family fun day that brings the whole community together. It attracts thousands of people from the local area, Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich regions. Billy cart racers come from all around to compete for the

coveted 'King of the Hill' trophy and other great prizes.

This year we have awesome local cover's band - 'Chester', markets, kids' rides, BBQ, food and drink stalls, a rolling raffle with fantastic prizes to win, our famous 'Cow Plop Bingo' where you can win $500, and many other great activities, including a model railway display, gymnastics demonstration and some amazing Harley Davidson motorbikes on show courtesy of the Gasoline Alley Harley Owners Group.

ABOUT WOODHILL Early settler William Everdell had first worked on Collin's Mundoolun station before moving to Oxley in 1862.

He returned to Veresdale in 1869. Land for the school was donated by William Everdell.

The Townsvale State School opened in 1873, was renamed Veresdale in 1874 and changed to Woodhill in 1899.

Verdon and Matthew Hinchcliffe whose family were the first settlers in Waterford, had a store in Logan Village, and another on the Townsvale Plantation in the early 1870s.

It is possible that Veresdale was named after Verdon. Woodhill was the property name of the Ferguson Family.

Crestmead Neighborhood Watch Crestmead NHW invited the Logan House Fire Support Network to chat with the group.

Louie and Christine gave a very informative talk on the dangers of ionized alarms and highly recommends that everyone change to the more reliable photoelectric ones which are available in 10 year lithium battery, normal battery or hard wired units. Team Logan

Team Logan invited Gotta Love Logan to their Trivia night to raise funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. Team Logan is a team of 4 very young over 55 year olds who are about to take on the Kokoda Challenge on the 18th July which is a 96km slog through the Gold Coast hinterlands. These guys are proving age is no barrier! Good Luck Team Logan!

SES Orange and Blue Ball An amazing and successful night of fun and fundraising. SES raised over $13,300 for Beyond Blue! The event, which was held at Canterbury College, consisted of a fabulous three course meal following by great entertainment, dancing and raffles. A very entertaining night for everyone.

Jimboomba

Are you ready to relay?

Have you ever wondered what Relay for Life is all about?

You are invited to celebrate the survivors, remember the loved ones and fight back against cancer.

On the 10th October, teams that have been fundraising all year will line up for the Jimboomba Relay for Life at Hills College oval. Teams will relay by keeping at least one team member on the oval. In total, teams will walk for 18 hours to raise funds for the Cancer Council Queensland to aid in the fight against cancer.

You can help by creating or joining a team and start fundraising with the emphasis on having fun and remembering those who have lost the fight and those who continue to fight against cancer.

Last year, Jimboomba Relay for Life raised $131,000. This added to the $4.5 million raised by Queenslanders. Cancer Council Queensland continues to fight against cancer by delivering services to cancer sufferers and their families including giving financial assistance, providing accommodation and research.

These funds have directly assisted more than 190,000 Queenslanders who have survived cancer. Devastatingly, 24,000 Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer this year so the fundraising is vitally important!

Logan Look Back

Juers Street, Kingston!

How many times have you driven down Juers Street in Kingston? It’s one of Logan’s busiest thoroughfare links, travelled by many of us every day. Have you ever driven along it, cursed at the traffic, stopped for an RBT, and dropped your kids at school? Yet, have you ever wondered where the name Juers came from?

Jack’s tenure as Manager was not without scandal, however. In 1932 Jack was embroiled in a corruption and bribery outrage that gripped the butter industry from Malanda in far north Queensland, through Gympie, Caboolture and all points in between.

The butter factories were run as cooperatives, owned through shares by the dairy farmers they provided service to and all profits from the factories should have been returned to the farmers.

However, allegations began to surface that significant profits were being syphoned off. As the allegations grew stronger and more serious, a

of four hundred pounds (keeping in mind that the average annual wage at the time was around two hundred pounds). Jack argued that the payment was for demonstrating machinery to a potential client after hours, was not a bribe and in no way conflicted with his role as Factory Manager. However, the Royal Commission was not convinced. They admitted they had no means of proving that Jack had done anything illegal, but they strongly suspected he had. The Board gave Jack a stern talking to at the next Board meeting and Jack kept his role and continued on as Factory Manager until 1943.

So next time you travel down Juers Street, spare a thought for Jack Juers and his Teflon coated ability to survive a Royal Commission unscathed!

Juers Street was named after John Paul (Jack) Juers. Jack was born in 1872 in South Australia, the son of German immigrants who met and married in Australia. Young Jack lost his father at the age of three and his mother at the age of eighteen.

Quota Logan is Welcoming New Members

Quota Logan President Janet Hughes and Secretary Romayne Farrer are on a mission to find ladies who enjoy supporting the community and having fun to join the club.

The two year old service association offers Logan woman opportunities to enhance their leadership skills and to grow personally and professionally.

“We are looking for ladies who want to explore fundraising, fellowship and friendship and basically do something good for the community” Romayne said.

“I have been a member of Quota for seven years”.

“I like to give something back to the community”.

“Quota is a good fit because in return for friendship and fellowship, I meet some exciting people” she said.

Recent projects for Quota Logan included collecting and collating toiletries packs for Rosie’s and assisting children in both Crestmead and Woodridge North schools through the QuoCKa (Quota, Cops ‘N’ Kids) reading program.

“The rewards you get from reading are immense” Romayne said.

“Just seeing the faces of those kids is so delightful”.

“The kids love it and are just so excited to have someone read with them a story” she said.

Quota International is a not-for-profit service organisation charged with empowering women, caring for children and aiding the deaf, hard-of-hearing and the speechimpaired.

Braking the Cycle is a Learner Driver Mentoring Program (LDMP) with added outcomes to ensure success. Based on Community concerns, BTC was developed and commenced in Logan in 2012 with a strong focus on Licencing, Road Safety, Employment, Crime Prevention and Youth Development.

Braking the Cycle!

2007 saw the introduction of the Mandatory 100 hours graduated licensing introduced in Queensland. In 2012 a meeting of professionals identified that youth unemployment was an issue, the Employment sector identified licencing as an issue and research identified that the 100 hours was a barrier to attaining the licence. Thus BTC was born and after 3 years we are still looking for committed and dedicated volunteers to come on board and mentor the wonderful young people of Logan City who are disadvantaged in having someone in their life able to supervise their driving or having a car that is roadworthy to be able to complete the hours in.

PCYC Crestmead and PCYC Logan have their own cars that they use for the program all insurance is covered by PCYC and the community benefits when these young learners gain their licence and a job. As well as researching plant varieties to check on frost tolerance, there are a few other things you can do to protect your plantings this winter against frost.

Frost can be quite a headache this time of year for those in the south, west and low lying areas of Logan. There are several types of frost but we tend to mostly experience what is known as Radiation Frosts. Radiation Frosts occur in the early hours of the morning when there are clear skies and very light to calm winds accompanied with temperatures between 0 and -3 degrees celsius. During this time, water freezes and creates ice crystals on plant surfaces and the water that is present in plant cells will expand and then rupture, causing varying damage to plants, including causing some to die.

Healing Woodridge (the event and the movement)

- Hosing down plants with water just prior to sunrise (plant cell damage is believed to increase when thawing of ice crystals is sudden so hosing acts as a buffer to the sudden temperature increase from the sun) - Resist pruning plants as this will only encourage new, soft growth that is more susceptible to frost damage.

- Covering plants with breathable cloth. This can be a little difficult and messy looking and they should be removed each morning after the sun has risen in most cases.

- Spray the plants with frost protectant or anti-transpirants that will coat the leaves of the plant offering some protection but can be expensive for numerous plantings.

My advice is to keep your plants healthy which can be achieved by regular fertilising and ensuring they are pest and disease free. Mulching is also a great idea as it allows for the soil to be kept warm and help release warmth upwards throughout the coldest hours. Ideally, they should be well prepared in autumn ready for the sometimes very rapid onset of frost in winter. Happy Gardening!

Healing Woodridge (the event and the movement) is an initiative from the Gospel of Power Church Inc. Healing Woodridge is a branch of the Street Outreach Ministry of Gospel of Power Church. It is our mission to help those in need and restore families in Logan. A way that we do this is by going out every weekend to feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and bring a message of hope to the broken. We are a passionate group of individuals who love our city and want to influence where we can for positive outcomes. In order to meet our mission and impact our community we rely heavily on the participation of Community Service Providers for support. Without the assistance of community-minded organisations, we wouldn’t be able to serve those in our community. With the success of Healing Woodridge 2014 we plan to build on the momentum and host Healing Woodridge 2015 in October. Love for All, Hatred for None The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association recently opened the doors of the Baitul Masroor Mosque in Stockeigh to welcome the broader Logan community.

The event incorporated a flag raising ceremony, a guided tour of the property, bookstalls, exhibits, children’s activities, food and refreshments.

Messages of loyalty, freedom, equality, respect and peace adorned the walls of the exhibition area.

Community leaders gathered in the mosque to speak on the need for peace and the value of mutual respect for Muslims and the greater Australian community.

“We as a community are all equal, so we have invited all of our neighbours and all of our friends to hear who we are and what the mosque is all about” said Ibraheem Malik.

“Regardless of your race or religion, we are all human, we all have to respect each other and we all have to lend a hand for the people, for any kind of help in need” Ibraheem said.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association actively supports an array of community initiatives including Clean-up Australia Day events, Red Cross appeals, regular blood donation drives and Cancer Council Queensland projects.

Ahmadiyya Muslims were instrumental in the clean-up following the 2011 floods.

“We need to be accepting each other” Ibraheem said.

“We all look different, but we all are one as human beings.

“When you give me a call for any good causes, you will find me on the forefront”.

“We should focus on the things that unite us, rather than the things that divide us” he said.

Logan House Fire Support Network

Local Charity Spotlight

Last financial year we attended 41 house fires.

16 of those being total loss fires, unfortunately with 2 fatalities.

On the 14 of May 2015 our charity was thrust into the spotlight as we helped the Campbell/Warwick family from Beenleigh with the passing of 2 year old Roman in a house fire. Since then, we have also been called into Westlake which is outside of our area, to help Jillian Ginn and her family with the passing of 11 year old Edison. We provide

immediate support to the families affected by house fire, by offering emergency accommodation, and emergency clothing.

When the fire attracts a lot of media attention, we protect the family from the media by doing the interviews for them.

Logan House Fire Support Network is a local not-for-profit charity in Logan who attend house fires. There is no other charity like ours that exists. We are a husband and wife team, Louie and Christine.

We also help to find new accommodation and help with the re furnishing of the new premises. When there has been a fatality, we help to organise the funeral including helping with the making of difficult decisions. We work with the families until they no longer need us and they are back on their feet.

We are, with the help of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, trying to educate the community to be fire aware and fire safe, through the sale of Photoelectric Smoke alarms and other fire safety equipment, such Images supplied by Logan House Fire Support Network

as fire extinguishers and fire blankets.

We are also attending events in the Logan area, such as the Pacific Unity Event which will be held on the 29th of August at Logan Gardens to highlight our charity. At this event, we will have a stand with information about our charity, as well as two fully operational fire trucks, a police car and much more. We would love to see everyone attend, it is a great day.

Councillors Corner Phil Pidgeon: Division 6 A new off leash Dog Park has just opened in Crestmead Park. Built especially for little doggies, come and check it out.

Did you know a Men’s Shed is coming to Crestmead?

Council has just endorsed entering a lease and once this is done, it's will be action stations at the Magnesium Drive site.

Are you into gardening? Why not join the Crestmead Community Garden group. Find us in Facebook and join the group to keep informed. The group is working hard to make Crestmeads first community garden a success.

Jennie Breene: Division 12 Albert River Parklands in Ramu St Eagleby will be upgraded this year. This beautiful park on the Albert River will have new fitness stations, a new full-sized basketball court and landscaping to rejuvenate the area. This follows recent works to replace the retaining wall near the boat ramp.

Residents may have noticed that we've had to close the pedestrian bridge at the park after it was damaged beyond repair during a storm in May. We're currently investigating options to replace the bridge and I'll keep you updated on this.

Graham Able: Division 5 Works are underway to upgrade the tired footpath and kerb and channelling on Neridah Street Loganlea, outside the Loganlea State High School.

These works will improve wheelchair access and promote a safer pedestrian entrance for students and the local community.

Settlers Park in Acacia Road is about to get a $200k makeover. New play equipment and landscaping will be a feature.

These works will ensure that this heavily used area is up to modern day standards and comes at a cost of approx. $170,000. I look forward to seeing the finished results.

This year’s Queensland Music Festival will take place on 1-2 August at Logan Brothers Rugby League Club. Logan’s musical celebration – Under This Sky: A Story of Joy and Identity, features over 700 Logan residents singing, dancing and performing.

Luke Smith: Division 6 Tudor Park transformation underway Works are underway at Tudor Park in Loganholme as part of a major $550,000 upgrade that will include the construction of a new skate park and a state-of-the-art playground catering to children of all ages.

Shade sails, picnic shelters and an electric barbecue will be installed and the new skate park was designed in close consultation with local skateboarders to ensure the best facility was designed for the space.

This is a really exciting project and will make Tudor Park one of the best recreational spaces in the city. I can’t wait to see the final result when work is complete towards the end of the year.

Russell Lutton: Division 2 Funds have been allocated toward the creation of a small dog off leash area in Logan Gardens. This will be built adjacent to the existing off leash area and will be specifically for small dogs.

Installation is imminent on 6 pieces of exercise equipment to provide a fitness circuit in Logan Gardens. Along with the extensive pathways in the Gardens, this should prove popular with residents who enjoy using the park for exercise.

Ewing Park is also having exercise equipment installed. This will be adjacent to the dog off leash area near Nanda Street. Ewing Park is about to have solar lights installed along the new pathway.

Our biggest ever Eats and Beats will combine with this fantastic family event, bringing over 50 food vendors on Saturday and Sunday.

Bring your blanket, chair or cushion and sample some food from 3pm with the QMF performance kicking off at 6pm.

Laurie Smith: Division 7 Funding has been approved to Plant 579 trees on 30 local roads, streets, cul de sacs throughout division 7 , The trees will be evergreen , flowering and are non - invasive.

Those streets that have been selected will be contacted by our parks branch providing them with localised plans of the type of tree being planted.

Hillcrest is currently having 358 wooden power poles painted with landscape / wildlife scenes. Residents can discuss with the artists their preference or request as to what they would like on their power pole as long as it conforms to council criteria.

Footpaths will be constructed in the following streets in Boronia: Lockerbie, Warana, Rowena, Ferndale, Gaynor, Mareeba, Bixby, Lyndon, Yeoman, Colburn, Blaxland, Comley and Hadley .Once constructed this will complete approximately 10.6 klm of new footpaths in division 7 over the last 4 financial years.

Works are currently underway on new fitness stations being installed at Greenbank recreational reserve, Middle road Greenbank.

All projects mentioned above are funded through Divisional funding.

ANZAC Day – Muslims for Loyalty and Peace

Ahmadi Muslims, being the loyal citizens of Australia, paid their respects in honoring the ANZACs. Late Malik Noor Muhammad

April 25, 2015 marked the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. On this day, in 1915, a group of Australian and New Zealand soldiers found themselves wading ashore before dawn on a small beach on the Gallipoli peninsular in Turkey.

Many of these men were only teenagers, some as young as 16. All were anxious to prove their courage and national identity.

Over the eight months following, these young ANZACs experienced a harrowing ordeal and a total of 36,000 Australians and New Zealanders were killed or wounded at Gallipoli.

In those terrible battles, young Australians earned a reputation for courage, self-reliance and mateship. The experience drew Australia together as a nation and helped to establish our national character.

ANZAC Day is not about glorifying war, but rather on this day, we remember and pay our respect to all the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to give us the freedoms we enjoy and cherish today and more importantly need into the future.

Ibraheem Malik is the son of a proud Ahmadi Muslim and a decorated soldier of the British Indian Army the late, Malik Noor Muhammad.

He joined the Indian British Army serving in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Corp during World War II.

His rank mentioned in the records was Sergeant and he fought bravely in defending his country. He was on the front line of World War II in Bengal and Assam (commonly known as the Burma front). He was taken as a prisoner of war and was later returned home safely when the war ended with Japanese surrender.

After leading his fellow cub scouts on a 7.2km walk over two hours at Berrinba Wetlands last month, Khane Carroll has successfully acquired a Grey Wolf Award – the highest achievement a Cub Scout can receive.

Supported by Cub Scout leader Michelle Everett, Khane led Jack Buchbach, Hallie Bracken and Savannah Fyffe – all aged between 7.5 and 10.5 years – on the successful walk through the wetlands on June 27, accompanied by Ms Everett’s trusty dog Max. While a Cub Scout leader is on hand as part of the Grey Wolf walk to help with decisions such as which path to take, compass reading, and ensuring rest breaks are taken, Khane was responsible for drawing up the route and list of items the trekkers would need, as well as ensuring everything was ready before the hike started.

A Cub Scout intending to go for a Grey Wolf Award must already have completed several previous tasks, badges, camps and activities, as well as developing and presenting a resource for the Cub Scout pack, based on The Jungle Books.

The Logan Village Scouts member organised the trek as part of his quest for the award, with planning involving a map as well as ensuring everyone had the appropriate equipment, clothing, food, and a personal first aid kit.

Review of Logan River Parklands!

We love sharing details of great parks in Logan - this one did not disappoint! Logan River Parklands is an expansive section of land with a generously sized playground area, lengthy bike paths, several gazebos and river

larger gazebo is positioned away from the view of the playground and is ideal for gatherings requiring a quieter environment. Various smaller gazebos are situated along the length of the parkland, allowing for use by multiple groups of people. Most gazebos have barbeque and water facilities nearby.

A toilet block is situated atop a hill, allowing for visibility from most parts of the grounds.

The large park is set back from the road with ample parking. There are two playgrounds and a beach volleyball court in close proximity to the main carpark. The playgrounds are both sheltered by brightly coloured sails and have soft-fall surfaces. The larger playground features several structures that allow for climbing and swinging, a swing set with toddler swing, double see-saw and slide.

The smaller playground is more suitable for younger children. It too features climbing structures and a slide with the addition of various pieces of tactile play equipment.

A lengthy bike/walking path runs parallel to the river with maintained bushland in between.

Several shelters are located near the playground allowing for active supervision of children's parties or family outings. A much

Community Organising: Getting results

Tuesday 7th July saw the Logan Assembly of the Qld Community Alliance. It was standing room only as more than 300 people squeezed into St Francis College School Hall in Crestmead.

The Qld Community Alliance brings together faith institutions, trade unions, community organisations and ethnic associations to work together for the common good. The aim of the Qld Community Alliance is to strengthen community relationships from the ground up.

Only with strong organisations will we be able to improve our ability to advocate for the values and concerns we all share.

Tuesday's Assembly was the climax of months of work by grassroots Logan leaders from inside the member organisations of the Qld Community Alliance. It all started last September with “Listening to Logan” where Logan residents shared stories about the pressures on themselves and their families.

Together they decided to take action on safety. The Assembly saw Logan City Council and Qld State Government agree to solutions developed by local grassroots leaders. These solutions were in 3 areas.

Safe Havens

Logan Together

We launched Safe Havens, where businesses will commit that if they see any violence or hate they will report it to Police. The concept was endorsed by both Logan City Council through Cr Russell Lutton and the Qld Police Service. In response, residents from all across Logan committed to visiting their local shops, explaining the idea and asking them to become a Safe Haven.

We know that Logan Together’s aim of addressing the outcomes of children 0-8 in Logan will make the biggest difference to safety long-term. More than 20 organisations pledged to take action by informing their members of the Logan Together Collective

Impact project.

This pledge was matched by Queensland Minister for Communities, Shannon Fentiman, who committed $75,000 in funding this financial year to the Logan Community Group Alliance to organise Logan civil society towards this goal.

Public Transport To address our concerns about public transport a Working Party of State Government MPs and Logan City Council Councillors was created. Building on and linking into the great work of the Logan City of Choice Transport Sub-committee, this working party was charged with finding innovative local solutions to public transport

by February. And they'll be reporting back to a public meeting on 10 March 2016 so we can make sure they really do create solutions.

Most importantly we proved that Logan City's community could work together. We built people power and we used that power to make Logan safer!

Eagleby Wetlands

It's in the blink of an eye that an elegant Vshaped shadow cuts swiftly across the landscape. It belongs to the Cattle Egrets that have formed an elegant arrow formation to speed on, into their breeding grounds in the Eagleby Wetlands. There, they will turn from cloud white into buttery yellow and await the Melbourne Cup, and their chicks.

In November, head down Fryars Road and left into Hersey’s Road and you will witness a riot of birds all clamouring for a position.

Eagleby Wetlands is popular for birds, and Bird Watchers, from all over the world.

Travel down Fryars Road and turn left into Eagleby Road, to cane fields, and there is a great expanse of water fronting the Cattle Egret breeding grounds. I've seen a pair of Jabiru, standing 1200mm high on red legs; Australia's only stork.

But today there was only the usual suspects Little Black Cormorants drying themselves on exposed logs, stiff still Little Egret with their sharp beaks poised ready to spear unsuspecting morsels in the water, a Swamp Harrier (Hawk) glides not too far off the water, in search of food, and gliding majestic Black Swans.

Did you know all the swans in the U.K. belong to the Queen; and rightly so!

Today there wasn't a great variety of bird-life as it seems even the birds were on holidays for the winter.

Go up the end of Logan River Road and you will find Eagleby Wetlands. Walk across the park to the fading sounds of civilisation behind you and Kookaburras laughter, Magpies carolling and a Swan's honking.

Beautiful tiny Little Grassbirds and Red-backed Wrens fluttering here and there landing on the swamp grasses.

The reserve is a maze of tracks following the river, leading you around the marshes and across the grasslands. There are many bird hides for you to comfortably take photographs, or just to take a sneak peek.

"The wetlands provides an important habitat for waterbirds and reptiles, and is located adjacent to the Albert River. Featured in the wetlands are varied bird habitats such as melaleuca and brackish swamps, a freshwater lake, woodland, canefields, and open grassland.

More than 200 Australian native bird species have been recorded in the area, including 19 of the 24 Australian Raptors, and almost half of the bird species found in Queensland. " Photographs by Anton Chang

Living Large in Logan Celebrated on Stage The banks above Logan Brothers Rugby League Club are being transformed into a stage of gargantuan proportions to accommodate Queensland Music Festival’s Under This Sky. Heralded as a “premiere production so spectacular that no mere stage can contain it”, Under This Sky honours Logan City’s unique identity with warmth, humour, tenderness, colour, flair and exuberance.

The production is a conglomerate of local story tellers, musicians, singers and entertainers coming together to highlight Logan’s diverse lifestyles and immense community spirit for two shows in front of a local audience.

“There is an old way of talking about Logan and there is a new way of talking about Logan” said creative director Sean Mee. “The new way talks about its interconnectedness and its coming together”.

“We’re taking the ordinary people of Logan, the people who live and work here, to show a day in the life of Logan” he said.

Under This Sky is a free community event being held at Logan Brothers Rugby League Club on Saturday 1 Aug and Sunday 2 Aug. Gates open at 4pm with the show commencing at 6.30pm.

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket, chair or a cushion and to arrive early to secure a spot.

I had a dream that I would help change hundreds of lives to: educate , motivate, support , inspire , regain self-worth , to reach amazing feats, but most of all to increase longevity (LIFE ) in health , wellness and fitness.

I have been in the fitness industry for over a decade, helping every walk of life that needs my help with health and fitness.

I believe I am not like any other trainer. I will work harder and smarter. My passion shows that in everything I do, I give 100% I created Fitageous Contagious Fitness in my back yard with customised personal training and group sessions which I am incredibly proud of!

Years of dedication and hours of time has been given to those who needed my professional services in personal training. 7 years later, whilst gaining knowledge and continuing building a strong respectful reputation and from advice provided by my blessed mentors who are some of the best personal trainers in Brisbane, I slowly put my pennies away each week until I

was able to open my own awesome personal training studio in the heart of Tanah Merah :) My Dream had become a reality !!!!

People ask me these questions all the time!

I lost both parents at the ages of 13 and 18, both passed from health related issues The pain of the loss was incredibly unbearable and I vowed I would learn about the human body and do everything in my power to share my knowledge with others, so they would never have to experience the pain that I suffered.

I wanted to be in the medical realm, I wanted to save lives. I loved learning about the human anatomy, human biology, physiology, nutrition and anything in relation to health.

I secretly wanted to be a cardiologist, however it dawned on me, that by the time I would see the patient, the damage would have already been done. That old saying prevention is better than cure, replayed in my head, so I knew that would be what I was going to use all my knowledge for!

Personal Training seem to be exceptionally ideal as with this career I could help people stay clear from hospitals as well as enable me to save somebody well and truly before their health faded.

I believe this is my calling, and I do it with heart and soul :) So we have come a long way from running Fitageous alone. After a lot of interviews to find unique purpose fit trainers, I am happy to now have on board my results team Eve , David , Peter and my administration officer Skye , WE CHANGE LIVES !!!

Fitageous now offer many amazing services in house and we are continually adding to our long list. My trainers and I do not stop educating ourselves in our realm , I believe we truly are the BEST when it comes to results and duty of care for our clients :) My board of directors include my gorgeous husband James and our super 6 known as the tribe!

Logan Village Lions Changeover Dinner

LOGAN Village Lions are ready to roar ahead again following its annual changeover dinner on Saturday, July 4.

In his outgoing speech, Mr Milevskiy highlighted some of the Lions’ successes over the past year, including celebrating its 20th anniversary in April and serving more than 500 Gunfire Breakfasts at the town’s Anzac Centenary Dawn Service.

A new committee was elected at the dinner to guide the respected community service organisation for the 2015/16 financial year, with Eleanor Lyons stepping into the president’s role for the coming year, taking over from immediate past president Warren Milevskiy.

Ms Lyons described her new mantle as a great honour and said she had been impressed by the dedication of the previous committee and their support of many worthy causes in the local community.

“My main objective for the next year will be to keep all our established events running smoothly and to consolidate our position in Logan Village as the major fundraiser to our community,” she said.

He said the Logan Village Lions had been able to donate more than $11,000 to several community groups over the past year, including Logan Village State School, Camp Quality, a local child requiring a mobility walker, Logan Village Men’s Shed and Logan Village Museum.

As well as the changeover to the new committee on the evening, Mr Wigg, one of the club’s charter members, also received the William R Tresise Award for dedicated humanitarian service, while Braydon Jones was inducted as a Young Lion.

Make a difference Become a volunteer English Tutor You can make a difference in the life of new migrants by becoming a volunteer English tutor at TAFE Queensland. As a tutor you will assist students in the Australian Government funded Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to learn English and settle into life in Australia. No prior experience as an English teacher or tutor is required. TAFE Queensland provides free training and resources.

Tutors are matched with a student according to gender, interests and location. Meetings occur in the student’s home, café or library at a mutually convenient time once a week.

By becoming a volunteer tutor you can help break down cultural barriers, make a positive impact in someone’s life, and establish friendships that will last a lifetime. The Logan State Emergency Service (SES) Needs YOU! Logan SES consists of volunteers dedicated to assisting the community by responding to emergencies and disasters, 24/7.

Logan SES currently has 142 active members for a community that has a population in excess of 280,000. We are looking for new members who are willing and able to assist our current members in supporting our growing community Logan SES members hail from diverse backgrounds and professions and range in age from 16 to a LOT more than 16. If YOU are 16 years of age or over and interested in giving back to the community, why not consider joining the “Orange Angels” of Logan. We are looking for enthusiastic members with life skills that can be utilised and shared with other SES members.

Education and training is provided free of charge to volunteers and uniforms are provided once a few basic courses and a probationary period have been completed. As an SES member, YOU will have the opportunity to participate in training and gain practical experience in a range of skills including; storm damage operations, general rescue, communications, teamwork, map reading and navigation, working at heights, first aid and chainsaw.

Once trained, YOU could be activated for tasks such as:     

assisting the Queensland Police Service with a search for missing children rescuing people from swollen rivers or flood waters supporting other emergency services through the provision of welfare, emergency lighting and communications support responding to households for damage caused by rain, storm or flood.

Possible deployments interstate if required.

We have six SES groups spread throughout Logan, so there will be a group near you. If YOU would like to come along for a look, to see what we do and perhaps join later, give Jim, the SES Local Controller, a call on 0408 715 004.

Water Sports Club on the River?

I know many of you agree that we do not utilise our beautiful Logan River enough.

A place where kids and adults can learn many great water sports like kayaking, skiing, canoeing and many more in a safe environment in our own very own backyard!

It is time we embraced our beautiful river and make it part of our everyday lives. What about fishing competitions or dragon/raft boat races? How about a festival that celebrates everything about our beautiful rivers and waterways?

Logan Rivers and Wetlands Recovery Plan 2015 - 2024

The Logan Rivers and Wetlands Recovery Plan is an ambitious plan to improve our waterways to improve the health and sustainability of the rivers and surrounding areas.

“The Recovery Plan sets the direction for the rediscovery and recovery of our rivers and wetlands with collaboration, community stewardship and multiple outcomes at its core.”

Objectives of the plan: 1. Improve awareness of Logan’s wateways 2. Promote and celebrate Logan’s waterways 3. Encourage community participation in waterway recovery activities 4. Build collaboration and partnerships to deliver Recovery Plan outcomes 5. Work with rural landowners to support uptake of best practice land management 6. Support waterway based amenity, recreation and tourism 7. Support a sustainable fishing industry in Logan 8. Undertake waterway and catchment restoration 9. Manage pollutant transport to waterways 10. Support best practice asses management 11. Design and plan our city waterway recovery We need to proudly take ownership and actively participate in the activities outlined in the Recovery Plan. We have a wonderful resource in our rivers and waterways which should be amongst our best assets though currently these resources are sadly underutilised.

As part of the plan, Council is to develop and have readily available a yearly schedule that supports volunteer participation across a range of Council activities. Give them a call and see what it is that you can do to assist in the Rivers recovery.
