Cairns Epic Haul for Logan City BMZ Academy Riders With the success coming from what is Australia’s only BMX club to be an Academy with the focus that “winning is not everything” being all about developing skills, participation, having fun and enjoying bike riding, it helps to prove that you can achieve results when you are having fun at the same time.

27 Logan City BMX Academy members chased the sun north travelling an epic round trip of a combined 91,800 kms to compete at the 2015 BMX Queensland State Titles in Cairns, which turned out to be the biggest on record with 1770 entries – a tremendous testament to the strength of BMX racing in Queensland.

With long term leasing agreements with Logan City Council the members train and ride at what is fast becoming thought of as a world class facility located within the grounds of the beautiful community precinct of Underwood Park, which is open to the public when not in use for club activities.

Over a third of the club’s riders classified in the top eight in the state for their categories, adding up to 12 plates returning to the local club. The haul included five podium finishes and a state champion Izaac Kennedy (15 boys) among the honours. The club takes pride in the fact some of its riders are Factory sponsored and it is home to some of the riders from the BMX Racing teams The Bandits and Phirebird.

To Logan Village by Rail

WITH all the ongoing development at Yarrabilba and elsewhere in Logan’s semi-rual west, there has been a lot of discussion about public transport in the area – or, more importantly, the lack thereof.

off from the South Coast Line (the line from Brisbane to Southport on the Gold Coast) at Bethania.

The line made its way through Waterford West (the station overlooked the river opposite what is now Canterbury College) and Buccan before heading to Logan Village.

Driving along Waterford-Tamborine Rd towards Logan Village the railway can clearly be seen on the left-hand side of the road as you approach Ooah Creek and Quinzeh Creek, with a large wooden bridge particularly standing out.

The Brisbane Courier newspaper reported that “the Village was en fete” for the train’s arrival and “the trees were gaily decorated with flags, the buildings with foliage, and several hundred people in gala attire were waiting the arrival of the excursionists”.

“Large crackers, too, were placed on the rails, and as the engines passed along these exploded with reports like the firing of musketry,” it noted.

The line proved a huge boon for the town and the railway was soon expanded to Jimboomba and onto Beaudesert, where it was completed on May 15, 1888. A branch line

Driving around the area, however, it’s obvious this wasn’t always the case. A now-rusting railway line runs from Bethania through Waterford West to Logan Village and onward to Jimboomba before making its way to Beaudesert.

While it is unfortunately silent now, it was not always so – in fact, the railway was vital for the development of Logan Village The town of Logan Village was founded in the early-mid 1860s on the river trade and for many years its chief products were agricultural, particularly dairy items and timber.

As the town began to grow, however, the river became less suitable as a major transport route and calls were made for a railway line to link the settlement to Brisbane.

In 1885 these calls were answered, with the construction of a £24,500 (several million dollars in today’s currency) railway branching

Of course, it wasn’t a ruin in 1885 when the first train, hauled by a steam engine and carrying well over 300 passengers, arrived in Logan Village at 12.45pm on Saturday, September 5, after a 90 minute journey from brisbane.

5 Over the years there has been discussion of turning the disused line into a rail trail, re-opening it to commuter rail traffic, or even converting it a light rail or tramline.

The station at Logan Village was not large, but it did have an interesting feature: a captured (and deactivated) German WWI MG 08/15 machine-gun, which was a war trophy installed in the early 1920s. Sometime around WWII it appears to have vanished; its whereabouts remain unknown and have become one of the area’s minor mysteries.

Freight services between Brisbane and Beaudesert continued until the mid-1990s, and a heritage rail service was also briefly revived between Beaudesert and Logan Village from 2002-2003.

The railway line – overgrown in many places – is still in place, and the concrete platforms and switching levers at Logan Village are located in a public park on Waterford-Tamborine Rd and easily accessible for viewing.

New Community Market in the Works for Meadowbrook

The suburb of Meadowbrook is one with an exciting future. It shows all the hallmarks of future economic development. Currently housing a growing educational and medical precinct along the Gold Coast – Brisbane rail corridor, this will form the cornerstone for the future growth of the local economy. Behind the scene, the Local Government’s ‘Meadowbrook Masterplan’ and the State Government’s ‘Meadowbrook Economic Development Strategy and Structure Plan’ envisage the suburb to become a central community hub and activity generator,

offering a platform for diverse housing and employment opportunities that will transform it into an ever more vibrant community in the years to come.

As someone with an academic background in community development and sustainability, to me, I thought there must be a way forward that celebrates this social and cultural vibrancy, while creating and maximising economic opportunity for the local residents. In my view, community building is about putting people together in such a way that invites new conversations, new alliances and new possibilities. There is no better way to tick all the boxes than by creating a community market. And after chatting to some fellow residents, the idea of the shopping centre in Meadowbrook came up.

Brotherhood Against Domestic Violence

Logan came together to walk against Domestic Violence on two occasions this month. As a community, we should be proud in our amazing response to confront this problem. We came together in numbers as a Brotherhood and/or as people taking the pledge to never idly sit by and allow Domestic Violence to happen. We have vowed to do all we can!

A call went out to the community and the community responded. An elderly gentleman needed to be moved so we gathered a few people including Cindy-Lee, Margaret, Hamish, Oliver, Brooke, Kimmy Kat and Emily to do the best we could. A huge shout out to Chick N Ute owner Mel who volunteered her transport services to help out. Great community effort. Thanks everyone involved!

Sausage Sizzle: Relay for Life

Gotta Love Logan attended the Logan Chamber of Commerce Breakfast to listen to the M1 Task force. The task force consists of representatives from all levels of government as well as the Chamber of Commerce President. With projects this large, a Business Case must be completed which is very costly, however, it should be completed reasonably quickly.

Donna Lowe, our official photographer and relay team member, organised two sausage sizzles to raise funds for our team! Thanks Donna and -+assistants, Margaret and Oliver.

Of course the sausage sizzle would not have been possible without the wonderful support from Officeworks Browns Plains! You guys rock!

Windaroo Hospitality at its Best!

WINDAROO Valley High School students rolled out the welcome mat to host the Beenleigh Yatala Junior Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

Chamber members and special guests from Griffith University to partake in the breakfast.

The fully functional school restaurant was brimming with patrons who enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast expertly prepared and served by students from the school’s trade trading centre.

Earlier in the week, the fully functional commercial kitchen and its restaurant were put to the test with students catering Logan Rotary’s 40th birthday dinner celebrations.

The dinner was heralded a triumph by the Rotarians.

The highlight of the morning was Dr Robin Pentecost and students Matthew Keech and Joshua Gell presenting to the contingent on pathways to University and the various offerings Griffith University can provide.

The morning concluded with a brief question and answer session and Griffith University guests staying behind to talk to students oneon-one.

Logan Look Back

Logan City Historical Museum turns 25!

Back in October 1990, the first official museum in Logan City opened its doors at the old Kingston Butter Factory. Initially the rooms, that would come to house the museum, were carpeted and fitted out by the Logan City Council, but were only used occasionally for travelling displays.

This changed with the coming together of a group of likeminded people to form the then, Kingston Butter Factory Historical Museum Society. The perseverance if this group saw the space allocated, by the Council, for use as a dedicated museum for the Logan area.

One of the main driving forces for the formation of the Society and establishment of the museum, Mr Lawrie Strange, O.A.M., a former Executive Director of the Bicentennial Authority and proud Logan resident, said at

the time, 'Logan City is regarded as being among the five largest cities in the State, and as such, it is certainly deserving of this, it's first museum. Now is the time to start collecting the things of the past - to preserve them as lasting mementos, and the efforts of the Historical Museum Society in this regard will certainly not go un-rewarded as they put together a visual display of life in Logan City since the days of first settlement.'

Using money provided by Logan City council in conjunction with the Bicentennial Authority, the Society put together a permanent display on site to showcase the background and heritage of the Logan region, including day to day items used by its pioneers, memorabilia relating to the regions early schools, railway, community and social activities and many others.

The museum also house the complete collection of minutes and account books dating back to the formation of the Southern Queensland Co-op Dairy Association in 1906.

These records of the founding, building and day to day running of the Kingston Butter Factory are fascinating reading and are

regularly viewed by visitors with family members who worked at the Factory.

On the 25th of October, the museum will be opening its doors and asking the people of Logan to come and help them celebrate this milestone and take a closer look at the collection showcasing our wonderful city.

There will be specialised displays, craft stalls, vintage cars, doll collections as well as food and drinks available for purchase. So please, come on down and celebrate the museum's silver anniversary, and share in the memories that the museum protects to share with the future

My beautiful dog Missy went missing on the 29th of August from our home on Mundoolun Rd Jimboomba about 11.30am. We fear that someone has stolen her. She is a Black female English Staffy with a very small amount of white on her chest and a small white spot on her back left and right toes. We all miss her so very much and her little mini foxy buddy is not the same without her. Please if anybody knows any info of her whereabouts please help us bring her back home. I know she will be missing us.

Building strong families in Logan

Logan is a city made up of many families; mums and dads who love their kids, mums and dads who work hard daily at being good parents, and in most cases mums and dads who wish they knew how to be even better parents for their children.

Over the last seven years many Logan parents have been fortunate enough to attend a Logan-grown parenting program called Heart Ties Enriching Parenthood.

Founded in 2008, Heart Ties specialises in building strong family relationships.

Heart Ties operates from the core belief that as humans we have two basic needs paramount to our happiness and wellbeing; love and freedom. It is Heart Ties’ mission to help families establish these two things in their families; creating an environment of love, respect, self-control, trust and happiness.

Through the Enriching Parenthood program, from toddler tantrums to challenging teens, parents are assisted to navigate these challenges with their children, teaching them to be responsible and maintain loving connections.

Experienced facilitators use storytelling, humour and group activities to demonstrate practical relationship and parenting skills.

Enriching Parenthood is a five-week course consisting of one two-hour session each week, providing the opportunity for parents to learn how to:   

Foster and grow strong emotional intelligence in children.

Teach and role model internal control and responsibility.

Bring life, love, fun and respect back into their families.

Transformational results

Research conducted by Griffith University in 2011 found that participants who had completed the Enriching Parenthood program noticed marked changes in their skills, attitudes and values including the way in which they embarked on particular parenting routines and functions.

Participants found that they had a better understanding of the parenting role, their responsibilities as a parent and the changes they could make to build better relationships with their children (Cartmel & Macfarlane, 2011).

The Heart Ties Enriching Parenthood Program has recently been funded by The Department of Social Services “The Salvation Army Communities for Children initiative in Logan”, with the goal to make the program accessible to many more Logan parents.

Garden Clippings

good news is the majority of plants, which also includes bulbous, rhizomatous and pupping plants, will make a comeback.

Strong gusty storm winds can be buffered by attaching some shade cloth to stakes hammered securely into the ground .. this is to be done on the windward side or can be refashioned to completely surround the plant. Deep watering of larger shrubs and small trees will ensure roots are kept deep and plentiful to help anchor the plant, limiting the possibility of uprooting, These are just a few ideas and preparations should be carried out before the storm hits as it is too dangerous to try save plants once storms have started. Stay safe and fingers crossed we start seeing some decent rainfall amounts for all of us in and around Logan.

Hi and this month heralds the official start of the storm season so I thought we would look at some issues that may arise for your gardens and some ideas to prevent damage to your plants, particularly those not yet established or smaller plant varieties.

It is important plants are in tip top health to help them tolerate high temperatures, gusty winds and sudden influxes of rain.

Mulching thickly, but allowing space around the plant trunk, will help keep plant roots cool and will help against soil being washed or blown away during storms. Keep up the fertiliser and regularly apply a plant tonic such as a liquid seaweed solution to ensure plant cells are nice and plump which will increase resistance to damage. Use on the foliage and soak the roots for all over coverage.

Hail can be devastating to plant foliage and can be a little difficult to protect gardens but for smaller plants, shade cloth held down with bricks can help, but sometimes prevention is better than cure so more fragile leaved plants, or your pride and joys, are best planted beneath larger bushes or dense trees. If plants are damaged, you can remove damaged foliage if you wish, and prune any damaged stems back to a solid growth node and give plenty of TLC. The

Substation33 is a Social enterprise of YFS. Substation33 opened its doors in January 2013 as an electronic waste recycling centre, providing a workplace where volunteers and employees gain confidence and skills for the transition to sustainable employment.

We deliver competitive services to benefit customers, employees and the planet.

At substation33, volunteers disassemble eWaste and direct the materials back into the recycling industry.

In the 2014/15 financial year Substation33 diverted 100,000 kilograms of eWaste from landfill, created 7,350 hours of paid employment and supervised 22,379 hours of work experience and volunteering.

We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to upcycle eWaste, our 3D printer design construction and sale the latest venture.

Substation33 is fast becoming an innovation hub in Logan. Substation33 was a finalist in the 2015 Australian Social Enterprise awards Local social enterprises support a wide range of job-seekers, including people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and long-term unemployed. They also tend to deliver products and services with a strong social and/or environmental focus.

Social enterprises provide training and skills, as well as much-needed jobs, while delivering products and services at economical prices to the Logan community.

Bullant Bobcat Hire

We have grown considerably since establishment to which now, we offer not only a tipper and bobcat service but also a 3 ton excavator, post hole boring, pallet forks, a rock breaking hammer to tackle the tough jobs.

More recently, we have branched out into managing larger project work.

Having worked in government for over 20 years in both the Australia Army and the State Public Service, Tony Langridge finally took the plunge after being made redundant to launch his own business - Bullant Bobcat Hire.

Tony recognised that Logan, with its abundance of greenspace and

rural lifestyle, was the ideal location to start his business and as a result, Bullant Bobcat Hire came to fruition in 2012.

Bullant is an owner operator business servicing the Logan district with an extended radius from Ipswich to the Gold Coast.

Tony prides himself on delivering a fast efficient service and specialises in clearing blocks of land, installing and repairing driveways, landscaping, levelling shed pads, and general earthworks. No job is too large or too small for Bullant to tackle.

I am great supporter of local business and wherever possible, I only use local suppliers and services to run my business. I am a member of the Logan Country Chamber of Commerce which is a wonderful organisation that provides local business with a supporting environment and an avenue to network.

I believe that by supporting local businesses, the community as a whole will benefit and subsequently thrive.

The previous month has been very busy for me with my local commitments and ministerial responsibilities, and in many cases they overlapped.

Firstly, the PPP parenting program was launched in Logan, which is one of the first launch sites in the State. The PPP program is a series of free seminars where parents and carers can get world class, effective and free advice to help them strategise the skills and confidence they need to give their kids for the best start in life. Tripe P is a Brisbane based success story which can now be found in 25 countries, and I am delighted it is now available in Logan.

Secondly, I joined with five local football clubs (across codes) and the Beenleigh PCYC to announce that local football players playing for the five signed up clubs in the 2016 season will take an Anti-Domestic Violence course run by the PCYC. This Logan based initiative shows that many individuals and groups in our community are saying loudly and clearly: Not Now, Not Ever to domestic and family violence and I am proud of that.

Finally, another exciting development in our community is the release of grant money under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. Over four years $240 million has been allocated to support 32,000 unemployed, disengaged or disadvantaged people to enter the paid workforce. During the first round of funding announced on the 10th of September, over twenty programs in the Logan area were successful in obtaining grants which will help so many people in our community integrate into the workforce.

A Deloitte Access report found that the Skilling Queenslanders for Work Program returned $8 to the economy for every $1 that was invested, but most importantly it will give people struggling to find work in our area more confidence and opportunities. I am excited that Logan really ‘scooped the pool’ with this round of funding and can’t wait to see the results trickle through.

September has been busy and October is gearing up to be the same, so I look forward to reporting back with more exciting news from our community in the next edition of Gotta Love Logan.

Councillors Corner Jennie Breene: Division 12 It's a new era as the community enjoys the new Beenleigh Town Square precinct, which was unveiled at the end of September.

This is the foundation for Beenleigh’s future and the project will bring many economic and social benefits.

The front of the courthouse will be transformed over the coming months thanks to a $1.5 million investment from the State Government, and work continues on the $330,000 car park on James St. The Beenleigh Town Square project would not have been possible without the contributions of the Federal Government ($3 million) and the State Government ($250,000).

To celebrate the opening of the Beenleigh Town Square, our popular Eats and Beats pop-up food and music festival will be held on Friday 6 November from 5pm to 9pm.

Graham Able: Division 5 Today, the 7th October 2015, I formally announce that I am retiring at the end of this term.

Together with my wife Margie, we have had many discussions over the past few months about whether I stay another term or not but I have decided that I want to give Margie, myself & our family a bit of time to enjoy life and to catch up after servicing this City for almost 30 and a half years.

I first got elected on the 31st March, 1985 to do just one term as I was a self-employed small business operator, and felt that I could give a 3 year stint to the community as back then we were part-time Councillors and also had to work for a living.

Once elected and helping people, it grew into my blood. I then decided to sell the business and to make a further commitment in serving a few more years to build a better city and community that I am proud of and love.

Russell Lutton: Division 2 Council has recently sold a block of vacant land bordered by Wembley Road, Bardon Road, Gilmore Road and Rod Gollidge Drive.

As part of the pending development Council has decided to close Gilmore Road at Bardon Road to keep out the heavy vehicle traffic from around Berrinba East State School and the residential properties along Bardon Road.

Council has developed a new SAFE CITY strategy and action plan for the years 20162020. Developed in consultation with the community the police and other agencies involved in keeping our community safe, you can now view the plan online at the Council Website. I encourage you to have a look and have your say on the plan.

In a first for Queensland, the very first SEPAK TAKRAW competition will be held in Logan Gardens on 24 October. Sepak takraw is a very popular game in Asia and is taking off in Logan. LCC has constructed some Sepak Takraw Courts at Greenbank and recently in Logan Gardens.

Laurie Smith: Division 7 The foundation slab for the CCTV pole has been laid in Greenbank recreational reserve which is the beginning of the installation of a 24/7 CCTV camera being installed that will provide safety and security for park users ,plus provide coverage of the car park, middle green precinct and the corner shops.

Funding was provided from both the Federal government and Logan city council.

If you would like to see a sport that is big in Asia then come along to Logan civic gardens on the 24th October. If you don’t know what Takraw is have a look on you tube, I describe it as volley ball with your feet .

Members of the Hmong community gather to train and play at Bellevue park which is on the corner of Carlton street and Middle road Greenbank, in fact Logan was the first city in Australia to build a purpose built outdoor Takraw court.

Divisional funding has been approved for the installation of shade sails to Argule park Hillcrest, Paradise park Forestdale,

Coronation Park Hillcrest. This bring the total to 12 parks in division 7 that have had shade sails installed over the last 4 financial years and is an ongoing commitment of mine.

With the highest rates of skin cancer in Australia it is important to provide some relief from the suns intensity.

It has been gratifying to see the increased usage of the play areas once the shade sails have been installed.

Steve Swenson: Division 3 Upgrades breathe new life into Reserve Park Our parks in Division 3 are always very well used and enjoyed by the residents. One of our most popular parks is Reserve Park located on the corner of Lake Rd and Gunungai Drv, Slacks Creek.

The park has always been a hive of activity, particularly late afternoons & weekends, with the volleyball courts a real draw card. As much of the play equipment had reached its use by date, and some areas of the park being unused, it was high time for an upgrade. So we’ve put in a new 6.8 metre high bird’s nest style playground tower, with a climbing chimney, rope bridge, net tunnels, slide and fitness stations.

We’ve also opened the park up clearing overgrown vegetation and re-aligning paths to provide a large kick ball area and new picnic shelters & seating. Come on down and have a look.

Certainly some areas have more than their share of crime and undesirable members of the community, but every city does.

Seriously, it is prevalent everywhere.

So what can we do to improve things?

Over time, people that shop locally develops relationships and loyalties that then make communities bond together without it being a conscious thing.

Become involved in your community – take an interest.

Sounds simple, but is it?

In the good old days, everyone knew their neighbour; everyone said hello when they passed each other in the street, people volunteered their time to worthy causes.

There is no better way to get to know your neighbour than sharing a similar goal.

Did you know that according to the most recent census data, Logan City is the 5th largest city by population in Australia? As 4 of the top 5 cities by population are in Queensland, that makes us the 4th largest city in our state.

In our 64 suburbs we have 217 ethnic backgrounds, with the largest migrant population being from New Zealand, England and the Philippines.

The most common language in Logan City after English is Samoan, Mandarin and Hindi.

I think you’d agree Logan City is very diverse.

Anyone who has been to the Eats and Beats festivals in Logan would see that having the diversity in cultures can be both entertaining and exciting when it comes to food choices. It is a perfect opportunity to see and taste what our neighbours eat in their own cultures.

Economically, Logan City is also becoming a transport hub with some of Australia’s high profile and profitable companies seeing the Cities potential for future growth. That will be good for the city in the years to come.

But what about us?

Sadly, we read and hear in the main stream media about crime and statistics that are always painted as a negative for Logan. It seems we are always playing the poor cousin to the bigger cities. Is it really that bad? Are we as bad as the media would have everyone believe?

In short, no.

The floods a few years ago in Brisbane were credited for actually getting people to care about each other and their own community.

Friendships were quickly cemented by people who had lived near each other and never spoken until then. The Mud Army and was a huge success in helping the council of the day get things done quickly and efficiently to prevent disease and also help people see a positive result after the heartbreak and negativity associated with such major destruction.

So how does that apply to us in Logan? Do we need a flood to action people to be friendly?

No. It is simpler than that.

The easiest way to become closer to your community is to do simple things like shop locally, volunteer for a local community group or even join a local theatre group or hospital auxiliary. There is always something to do for a community group in any city and Logan is no different.

But how does something so simple like shopping locally help the community?

It is universally recognized that small business is the engine room of any economy. If the local business does well, they hopefully grow and employ more people from the community. They get to know the regulars as well as their needs and will usually tweak their businesses to serve the community better.

Any small business, in any city, is usually the first people to ask if you want to know what is happening in the community, or finding out people’s views and attitudes. Politicians have known this for years.

They react quicker, they don’t have to wait for upper management to make the call or they

Small businesses deliver community character and economic advantages to the town they are positioned in, but also strengthen partnerships among neighbors, residents, other small business owners, community leaders and even schools by offering social and economic relationships.

Many also support local causes, creating even more good within a community.’

Finally, and no less important are sites like Gotta Love Logan.

Fostering a community spirit is the motivation behind sites like Gotta Love Logan, and many local people behind the scenes donate a lot of time and effort in trying to keep the Logan community moving forward with a positive momentum. They do this by; The recent addition of a local directory, as well as the events and fundraiser page, that helps keep local events in the Logan public’s eye. It is all for the same result, helping everyone realise that by working together, by supporting the community as a whole and by rejecting the media perception that we are all deadbeats, the community as a whole can showcase our combined community spirit and show the haters that they are wrong.

To quote Taylor Swift, we will just shake it off.

Logan Mayor Pam Parker acknowledged the hard work of the Chaplains in shaping young lives and shared her own pearls of wisdom in a heart-warming key note speech.

Go Duckling’s Family tips

Preparing Your Special Needs Child for School Starting school or beginning a new school year can be daunting for any child. Particular physical, intellectual, socio-emotional and/or sensory issues can greatly increase associated stress levels and make this transition seem even more overwhelming.

As a parent there are numerous ways to prepare and assist your child with special needs. The suggestions below may be of benefit to all children, but are particularly relevant for promoting successful schooling experiences for those with special needs.

Please note, these suggestions are intended to support rather than replace the advice provided by professionals / organisations familiar with your child’s specific needs.

1. Participate in “School Readiness” programs offered by local community centres or independently owned organisations that cater specifically for children with special needs.

2. Attend transitional days hosted by the special education staff at your desired school.

Most schools offer these in addition to wholeschool transitional programs - students can attend with parental, teacher or teacher-aide assistance accordingly.

3. Use social stories and visual boards to reinforce understanding and familiarise your child with the school environment, expectations, routines and teachers at your selected school.

4. Read books and draw pictures related to beginning school.

Drawing pictures is a great activity for associating enjoyment and pleasure with the idea of starting school.

Discussions with your child regarding his/her masterpieces may also serve as a means of identifying any misconceptions or continued concerns.

8. Arrive to school slightly early. This will allow your child opportunity to somewhat settle before external stimuli are increased (ie: groups of children running, parents crying etc).

5. Trial the wearing of school uniform on several occasions – this will allow you to ascertain if any physical modifications are required (eg: sizing) or if there are any sensory concerns that need to be addressed (eg: sensitivity to particular types of materials, aversion to labels, zippers, buttons or cords etc). Wearing of school shoes will allow your child to become accustomed to the sensation and help prevent blisters.

10. Don’t be afraid to ask your child’s teacher or members of the special education team for feedback. Alternatively, organise an appointment early in the year to collaboratively discuss strategies that may be applied at school and reinforced within the home.

6. Without acknowledgement, gradually familiarise your child with new school equipment (eg: hanging school bag off a doorknob, packing a picnic in lunchbox for an outing etc).

7. Practise the routine of morning preparations. Discuss the requirements, order and time frame of tasks that need to be completed before school each day. Ensure your child understands the processes and is capable of completing routine within the expected time frame (visual organisers/schedules are a great resource)

9. Use “share buddies” - toys, material, jewellery or anything that is part of a pair or can be broken in two! One piece for your child and the other for parent, grandparent etc.

How Relay Works: Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them. Relay also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer.

Each Relay For Life event is organised by a local volunteer committee on behalf of Cancer Council. Teams of 10-–15, which are headed up by a team captain, get together and fundraise year-round. Everyone then meets at the Relay to celebrate the amazing fundraising achievements of the past year.

Teams participate in a relay-style walk or run, challenging themselves to stay on the track overnight. Each event is unique and you can stay for the whole event and camp overnight, enjoy the fun activities and attend the moving ceremonies that make Relay For Life so special.

Jimboomba participated in their annual Relay for Life event on the 10th October with over 60 teams participating. And what fun they had with their amazing themed camps from carnival, 1950s to wedding singers!. Jimboomba Relay for Life raised over a whopping $87000… an amazing massive effort!

The Way We Were Gold was discovered in the Kingston area in 1885 and several geological reports and surveys were made over the next few years.

In 1913, the Queensland Kingston Mines and Investment Company was formed, soon digging a 22 metre shaft at Mt Taylor - a slight elevation about a kilometre north of Kingston Railway Station. The State Mines Department carried out sampling and assaying of the gold.

was temporarily abandoned.9 In 1932, Mr Kussman leased the area and Mr Ball again inspected the mine. This time, he said he was pleased to see the deposit being exploited and employing 25 men. The mine now consisted of a shaft and an opencut area. A 10-head stamp battery had been erected and an electromagnetically operated shaking screen was being installed to treat surface soil. In its first year, it treated 3000 tons of ore forreturn of 2.21 pennyweight of fine gold per ton.

Over the next 5 years, a further 25,401 tonnes were crushed but the recovery of gold was poor. In early 1938, South Queensland Gold Mines Pty Ltd installed additional equipment and introduced crushing in cyanide solution, a process which resulted in higher recovery. In 1941, the mine was worked under a tribute system men worked the mine and paid money to the owner for the right to do so.

Kingston (Opencut) Gold Mines Ltd acquired the property in 1950 and new plant was brought into operation in October 1951. For the first eight months of operation, ore was treated at the new plant for a fairly high average cost per ton. It was then anticipated that higher through-puts at a decreased cost per tonne would be possible when the water supply to the mine was increased.

The results were encouraging but the Assistant Government Geologist Lionel Ball cautiously suggested that further work should be done before making a major investment in plant. Exploratory shafts were dug and the existence of a lode of gold was confirmed but two years later, Mr Ball was still cautious. He stated that there were doubts as to whether moderate quantities of ore carrying but a few pennyweights of gold per ton can be profitably mined and treated at Mt Taylor.

Further exploratory work was carried out, then the site

23 However the mine closed permanently due to uneconomic grades in 1954. Unfortunately there were drastic repercussions from this mining activity. After mining ceased, the old opencut was used as a refuse tip. The combination of the cyanide waste used for the gold-mining and new waste including used engine oil produced a toxic site. This was not realised at the time and in 1967, the area was filled and subdivided for housing.

Problems began when the contaminated wastes began tosurface in the late 1980s, when residents in the Diamond Street area found black sludge oozing up through the ground on their properties. The State Government took action after complaints from residents. This involved the resumption of 46 properties in the contaminated area and rehabilitation of the site including sealing, capping and venting the contaminated ground. In December 1991, the Mt Taylor Parklands were opened on the oncecontaminated site.
