How good is that! If you have an idea for a story, please let us know! STAAR (Standing Tall Against Abusive Relationships)

“Movement is Medicine”

I have an empathy for women who are victims of domestic and family violence. I believe physical exercise can help heal wounds and change lives and I have made a personal commitment to help other women take the first steps on their own personal journeys to recovery.

Born and raised Logan girl, I am dedicated to helping my community, who I see as my second family.

Bio about Larissa A survivor of domestic violence.

From the age of 18 I endured domestic violence over a six year period. I suffered emotional, mental and physical abuse from my partners. I experienced the blame, denials, the apologies and the promises that it would never happen again. Without realising, I had become caught up in the vicious cycle of domestic violence. Over the years, what I experienced, I always feared – an injury which could destroy my dreams of becoming a mother. How a man could take that away from a young woman was incomprehensible and unforgivable. For many years, I thought being a mother may never happen. I didn’t let that experience shatter my dreams – I stayed positive. I am now a wife and mother of a beautiful 4 year old and 22 month old boys.

Finally, in desperation in 2001, I somehow found the strength to stand tall to attempt to break free of that cycle. I joined the local gym and took up boxing classes. I followed a physical fitness regime which allowed me to become stronger – mentally, emotionally and physically. I learnt to recognise the signs of domestic violence and take steps to prevent being drawn back into it. Movement became my medicine.

Today I still carry the scars of the abuse, some visible, some not so obvious. These scars are a reminder of who I was and who I am now – a stronger woman, a police officer, a wife, a mother and a survivor who wants to help other women to become survivors and not statistics.

Working as a general duties officer for the past six years, I have attended countless domestic violence incidents. From my own experiences and my exposure through work, it was apparent to me these women could

3 benefit from some extra support. I wondered if movement could also be their medicine. That’s when I developed the STAAR (Standing Tall Against Abusive Relationships) Program.

No one really understands domestic violence and the impact it has on your life until you have breathed it, lived it and come out of it, alive. You never fully recover from it, but boy don't you become stronger from experiencing it. Use that strength to move forward in life and never let anything or anybody hold you back in pursuing your goals.

Bio about STAAR STAAR officially commenced on the 16th May 2012. The program began with 3 women and has since seen over 85 women participate in the program. STAAR is a physical fitness program for women who have been or currently are affected by domestic and family violence.

The program is designed to empower women by building physical strength, emotional resilience, selfesteem and confidence through physical exercise.

Sessions are held of a morning and evening every Wednesday at the Eagleby Community Hall, Cowper Avenue and consist of a variety of fitness classes, boxing, aerobics, circuit and boot camp style training.

STAAR became a not for profit incorporated association early this year and has a team of dedicated, committed and well respected members who are passionate about making a difference within our local community.

Women who participate in the program have reported they have improved their self-esteem, confidence, coping abilities to deal with everyday stresses a lot better and feel more empowered and independent than before. Further reports suggest that there have been improvements within the children, that they are better behaved and their schooling levels have improved. One particular mum of 5 children has made a remarkable transformation going from a size 18 to a size 8. This same mum recently lost everything in a house fire and stated that if she hadn't of had the support of the group and felt the way she did, that coping with such a loss would have been a lot more difficult to deal with. The STAAR program is much more than a physical fitness program, it is a support network which allows women to come together, share their stories and develop friendships. No one is ever alone, we stick together and help one another out. We are all in it to end it, grow stronger, wiser and more independent.

We are not afraid of challenges or what life may throw at us. We are survivors, we are fighters, we are friends for life. We are sisters in survival.

GOTTA LOVE LOGAN ENEWSLETTER | Issue 2 Reports have also indicated that there has been a major reduction in repeat calls for service for domestic violence applications as well as breaches of domestic violence orders with the women linked to the STAAR program. Women now feel more confident in contacting police to report abusive and violent behaviour. These figures indicate that the STAAR program is an effective response to tackling the domestic violence epidemic faced by our community. I strongly believe physical fitness in association with a support network greatly assists women both mentally and physically to deal with the stresses experienced and to also assist with rebuilding their confidence and self-esteem to move forward in life. STAAR teaches women to not be bitter, but to use those experiences to become better.

What made you establish STAAR?

As a result of my own personal struggles with domestic violence, I developed STAAR (Standing Tall Against Abusive Relationships).

4 was trialed in July with a soccer match between mums and the children. This day was a great success and left the mums and children asking for the program to be run every week.

What inspires you?

My past has been a driving force for my future. I have made mistakes and I have learnt valuable lessons from them. Over the years, I have grown as a person and learnt not to allow my past get in the way of my future. Instead, I use it as a motivator and a tool to help other women to achieve their personal goals. Strong independent women inspire me, the ones who say they “can” and not “I can’t,” women who set goals and pursue them until they achieve them.

The diverse range of women who attend the STAAR program also inspire me and I’m continually learning from them. Meeting and speaking with the women when they first attend the program and watching them change and grow over time into strong independent women. It’s inspiring seeing women make positive changes in their life, have the courage to leave their abusive relationship and can recognise the signs and vicious cycle of abuse which they initially found themselves caught up in. To be a role model and be able to inspire other women; inspires me to want to help more women and children in domestic and family violence situations.

What is next for STAAR and how can women get connected?

There are a number of services available to women victims of domestic and family violence within the community. These services often offer psychological, emotional and counselling services, allowing women to voice their emotions with a trained counsellor. While this is an important part of the healing process, the physical aspect is often overlooked as part of the recovery process. STAAR aims to provide women with another option for dealing with their emotions, through physical exercise. Studies on the psychological effects have found that regular exercise and physical activity can improve mood and in turn reduce depression and anxiety, thereby allowing individuals to better manage stress and improve their coping abilities. STAAR works on the concept “movement is medicine.”

STAAR is a unique program and unlike any other offered in the domestic violence domain, which links those suffering domestic and family violence with police officers and outside organisations who work together collectively to rebuild on self-confidence, self-esteem, independence and to help build a positive, healthy outlook on life for both women and children.

After recognising the need for young people to become active and involved, I have developed YOUNGSTAAR. YOUNGSTAAR aims to rebuild the relationship between mother and child/children which is too often damaged as a result of domestic and family violence. The program

STAAR has been greatly received by local groups, members of Parliament, local businesses and general members of the public, offering their support through generous donations. STAAR currently operates from the Eagleby Community Hall (Cowper Avenue) every Wednesday morning and evening and will commence from the Upper Coomera Community Space from early October.

Biodiversity and the Natural Environment thriving in Logan

I am very passionate about Logan and its green spaces.

Logan City plays hosts to an abundance of green space within its geographical boundaries. In total, Logan has more than 900 parks as well as worldrenowned wetlands and environmental reserves”.

Great Egrets. Adjacent to the park, on the other side of Slacks Creek, Tanah Merah holds many undeveloped pockets of dry eucalypt forest home to Kangaroos, Wallabies, Possums, Flying foxes and Koalas.

Last week I was driving home from work and I saw a giant Wedge-tail Eagle gliding just above the tree canopy.

Not only is urban nature good for our health, it’s good for the environment too by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by storing it in trees. Studies in Brisbane show 1.45 million tonnes per year is sequestered, equal to 10% of the city’s emissions.

80 per cent of Logan City is rural, semi-rural or conservation land. One can imagine the amount of carbon sequestration here would be much higher than Brisbane.

I have created a Facebook page ‘Logan city – A city in Nature’ for everyone to showcase the natural jewels of our great city.

In world standards Logan is truly blessed with a high level of biodiversity.

Urban nature and 'green space' are very important because as studies point out, a connection to nature is vital to our everyday lives, and specifically our mental health and wellbeing. The city of Logan provides many great opportunities to get out and explore a bit of nature. The + wetlands, the Eagleby Wetlands and Daisy Hill forest conservation area are all popular spots in our city. But did you know there are parks in each and every suburb that offer that chance to reconnect with nature?

In my local park, the 10 hectare Riverdale Park, the Logan River meanders through a series of remnant woodlands, freshwater wetlands and tidal wetlands that contains bass, bream, flathead, grunter and sea mullet.

I’ve sighted over 60 bird species in the limits of the park alone, from tiny Red-backed fairy-wrens and sacred Kingfishers to Royal Spoonbills and

Southern Stars Baseball Club

It was decided that the new club name would be Southern Stars Baseball Club. They planned to play their home games at the Browns Plains State High School until the 1997/98 season, then move to a new ground developed on a preferred council site.

Probus Club Rochedale

In 1995/96 season, the club did blossom into a very strong club with three senior teams, a couple of junior teams and well over 50 committee and club members.

Thank you Probus Club Rochedale for inviting me to speak and making me feel so very welcomed. It was great being able to share my passion about Logan City and chatting about the different things that Gotta Love Logan has done and what is planned for the future.

The club added a few more junior teams and more members the next season and had also lodged plans with the Logan council to move to a new field.

The club got the go ahead in 1996 to move from the high school to the current location in Regents Park.

The Southern Stars Baseball Club moved into their new field at Regency Park, Regency Drive, Regents Park by Christmas 1997.

History of Southern Stars Baseball Club a letter was written on the 16th of November 1994 to the Logan City Council proposing the establishment of a new club in the Western Logan City area for the 1995/96 season. Since the closure of the Browns Plains section of the Western Districts club, which played out of the Browns Plains State High School grounds, a baseball club had not serviced the area.

Therefore, it was proposed for the 1995/96 season that a new club, independent of established club ties, would be formed to fill the void.

After initial discussions with interested parties, a steering committee was formed which included Brett Wood and Peter Oversluizen.

Over the past twenty years, the club has grown into the family club we see today, only to improve as each year goes by.

Since the club has formed, we have seen well over 500 club members’ come and go; there are a couple of members still here from the beginning of Southern Stars.

Compared to the other Brisbane clubs we compete against in competition, Southern Stars would have to be one of the smallest clubs in Brisbane, if not the smallest.

This has not been an obstacle for our junior players, with the many dedicated club members and coaches producing young stars that have gone on to represent their region “Brisbane West”, their state “Queensland” and also Australia at the Cal Ripken World series. Bridge to Brisbane!

Trinder Park Fete was an event that you should never miss. There is always a massive range of homemade goodies on offer. Jams, pickles, crafts, woodwork. Always amazes me how clever people can be with their hands!

Pacific Unity Festival

A keen group of Loganites set out very early to conquer the 10km Bridge to Brisbane challenge. We proudly wore out Gotta Love Logan singlets and were even stopped by other proud Loganites! The commentator on the mic gave us a call out when he saw us approach so everyone in hearing distance knew that Gotta Love Logan was proudly presenting!

We had an awesome day, walking and chatting and finished with a well-deserved breakfast at Southbank. Great event, great to be from Logan. Will you come with us next year?

Arts in the Park

This was a beautiful and very colourful day with so much to see, do and eat. Many cultures were represented. Very relaxed atmosphere. It is great seeing the community come together enjoying our diversity.

A fabulous family day. My daughter and I had such a wonderful day doing the many activities together. It was really nice to take some time out and spend it doing something we both enjoy doing‌ ART! Congrats to the organisers. I think these family day activities are fantastic for Logan City.

Happy Days for Village Rockers!

“The Village Rockers are going from strength to strength” Graham said.

“Rock Around the Clock” burst onto the American charts in 1954 striking a chord among the youth and changing the course of musical history across the globe.

Jukeboxes in Australia surged with rollicking tunes capturing the exuberance and rebellion of a generation.

Fast forward sixty years and the Village Rockers are keeping the rock and roll spirit alive with regular dances and classes in Logan.

The social club hosts regular club nights and bi-annual dances open to other clubs and the general public.

“We are often requested to perform dance demonstrations and we are looking to purchase our own portable dance floor”.

Other offerings include weekly dance lessons suited to individuals or couples who want to learn rock and roll dancing or improve their dancing skills.

“We anticipate continuing to support the community with dance demonstrations, lessons and more social involvement” he said.

Weekly rock and roll dance classes are held at the Logan Village Community Hall.

“Village Rockers are a bunch of recycled teenagers who just love to dance” club president Graham Vayro said.

“Dancing is not constrained by age, religion, or race”.

“Beginners receive individual attention until they progress to be able to join in with the group” Graham said.

“Experienced dancers learn new moves and techniques, so we really do cater for a wide range”.

“Some have been dancing for years, others are newbies, but we all have a love of rock and roll” he said.

The Village Rockers are a fully incorporated association with more than sixty members.

“It can be better to have a regular partner, but there are many who attend as singles and we all mingle”.

“We even teach those who admit to having two left feet” he said.

Looking the part in vintage 1950’s attire, the Village Rockers are community favourites often seen at local events performing dance demonstrations.

Logan Look Back

Did you know that Logan had an airstrip!

Can you imagine looking out of your classroom window and watching a Kittyhawk fly by below window height? Or the amazing sight of American forces training through mock dogfights above you? If you had lived in Logan in 1940's you wouldn't have needed to imagine them, because they were happening right here.

With General Douglas MacArthur establishing a base in Brisbane from which to direct the Pacific front, there quickly developed a need for airstrips, areas for fighter pilot training and dispersal of aircraft. Both Eagle Farm and Archerfield were already in use, so it was decided to build a number of airstrips in Logan. With a troop base already established

at Camp Cable Road, it was seen as a logical placement.

Five airstrips were built in total; one in each of Woodridge (parallel to Wembley Road from Jacaranda Avenue to the creek), Marsden (at right angles to Chambers Flat Road opposite the intersection with Browns Plains Road), Park Ridge (parallel to Chambers Flat Road between Bumstead and Chambers Flat Road), Loganlea (cross strips centred north of Ellerslie Road) and Waterford (a single strip adjacent to Buetel Street and extended towards Bompa Road.

Woodridge, Marsden and Park Ridge were under United States control and were cleared by the then Theiss Brothers in 1942.

Waterford, also under United States control, was created as a camouflaged timber aircraft hideout by M R Hornibrook, who built the same on Loganlea even though it was under RAAF control.

It soon became obvious that not all of the sites were useable. Woodridge, Marsden and Park Ridge were abandoned in 1943 as being too steep and undulating to be fit for purpose and were kept cleared and graded as decoy airstrips in the event of a Japanese air raid.

9 facilities proved effective however and American aircraft pilots began training on the Waterford strip.

Logan residents of the time tell stories of American pilots flying in and buying chickens from local farms before departing as well as providing the occasional lucky local with a joy flight. Ian Rohl, who was born at historic Mayes Cottage and a member of the Mayes family, remembers sitting in a classroom at Woodridge State School one day and seeing a Kittyhawk fly past below window height. He also recalled that his teacher was Dar from amused and ordered all the windows shut to cut out the noise and distractions. Ian also tells of watching Kittyhawks, Lightning and Flying Fortress aircraft in mock dogfights and practice skirmishes overhead. The Pope family of Woodridge, remember the problems of cattle straying onto the airstrip and the erection of fencing to prevent them. This fence is today on display in Logan City Historical Museum.

Garden Clippings

Weeds grow very quickly in the warmth and will be competition for your plants especially for water and soil nutrients. Mulch to suppress new weed growth.

Hi everyone! Spring has sprung so let's look at some things that should be taken care of during this beautiful season to keep your gardens in tip top condition and well prepared for the blaring heat of the incoming summer months. * A great time to repot any plants that have outgrown their pots or could do with a freshen up. Use a good quality mix, fertilise and water in well. * If you haven't already, mulch your gardens and even the surface of large pots to protect against the heat (see last month’s article for mulching tips)

Wall Hanging Quilt… to Remember

This is a story about a very special wall hanging which is in the planning process as we speak.

* Give your gardens a good feed. I use a slow release fertiliser followed by a liquid tonic such as Seasol for my Ornamental plantings and a dose of Blood and Bone for each of my Native plantings. There are many varieties of fertilisers available for specific plants if you want to be more particular. * With the threat of frost becoming less and less, pruning and trimming can be done without the worry of new growth being frost burned and the sun not being as strong as in Summer means sunburn of tender new growth is also less likely. Remember the direction of your pruning cut will dictate the

direction of new growth and always prune just above a stem node. * Keep an eye on pest infestations on your plants and treat accordingly. There is some great information on the internet to help identify the pest so you can treat correctly as well as directions on home remedies that ensure you are not using chemicals. Pest control is not always required (you can remove by hand or spray with a powerful water blast of the hose) as we have to be careful not to also kill off beneficial insects, especially bees and keeping your plants strong and healthy by means of watering, feeding and correct positioning, will ensure your plants will less likely be attacked. * Monitor plants for viruses and diseases.

We see the increased risk of diseases such as Black Spot and Blight as humidity rises as well as fungal soil diseases that can play havoc with a large variety of plantings.

Some diseases can be difficult and expensive to treat once it has taken hold so become really familiar with your gardens so changes and problems can be picked up early. Happy Spring gardening!

Several months ago I started thinking about all the celebrations that were happening to commemorate the end of World War 1. I saw some amazing machine embroidery designs digitalised by a wonderful lady which were very special Army designs. Just so happens that her husband drew the art work for her. I fell in love with these designs as they were drawn from the heart.

The wall hanging will be proudly displayed at the Butter Factory Museum for all to see.

There were several other designs as well which I hope to use and I also hope to do some applique. I plan on using all the colours from the three flags: Australian, Indigenous and New Zealand. I feel it is time for all of our WW1 soldiers to be recognised and to be thanked for the gallantry service they gave to their country. This is why I am creating this wall hanging.

I feel this will be a very fitting place to hang the work I am planning. This wall hanging will be made of love and thankfulness to all of our soldiers who gave their lives for this country.

I won’t explain all that is going into this very special piece of work as I want to surprise everyone including myself. I approached Council about this wall hanging asking if I could hang this in the museum and they agreed.

Some who came back and many who didn’t.

Some of these soldiers were from my own family.

Jennie Breene: Division 12 The final touches are being put on the $9.75 million Beenleigh Town Square, with practical completion set for the end of September.

Council has delivered this project on time and within budget, and we are planning some exciting events over the coming months. These include an official opening event for the community in November and Christmas activities.

Laurie Smith: Division 7 Argule park Hillcrest has recently had a new continuous post and rail fence installed , replacing the existing fence to deter unlawful entry by motor bikes and vehicles into this area. Chicanes were also installed to allow access for prams.

This was in response to concerns raised by local residents of the inappropriate behaviour occurring within the park area.

Of course, the Beenleigh Town Square will be a space that everyone can enjoy once it is open, if you have any questions about the Beenleigh Town Square or would like to discuss any council matters please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Footpaths in Div. 7 currently being constructed with approximately 50 % completed as of today.

Cr Able has allocated $27 300 of Divisional Infrastructure and Capital Improvements Program to the installation of carpark lighting in Tygum Park. This will include five lights spread along the length of the car park, this should improve safety for the community using the park.

Russell Lutton: Division 2 There are a number of park upgrades either happening or about to happen in Division 2 with Settlers Park, Plunkett Park, Ewing Park all set for upgrades and Oates Park set for a new walking path.

Residents around Ewing Park can enjoy the new shelter in the dog off-leash area and are also making the most of a number of exercise equipment pieces that have been installed.

Recent works were carried out at Lincoln Green park Forestdale ,re-aligning the car park (to make safer) installing a footpath and fence between the carpark and playground area.

This is a lovely park with covered seating areas, toilets, play equipment and now with the inclusion of a fence allows mothers and play groups a more secure destination for play / group activities.

What’s up in Waterford?

I am a keen supporter of Gotta Love Logan and share its desire to big up our community at every opportunity.

Whenever I’m asked about my home and electorate, I talk about the fantastic sense of community. Logan is loved by its residents and is a richly diverse community where people look out for each other. Gotta Love Logan is a fantastic organisation that showcases the best of our community.

This month I’m introducing myself, but in future my column will be about what I am doing as a local MP to support our area and promote local achievements and opportunities. In line with Gotta Love Logan’s ethos, my column will always be promoting our community in a positive light – and there is plenty of positive news to fill it. See you next month!

As part of its overarching ‘Safe @ Home’ campaign, Wildlife Queensland is excited to be embarking on a new project at Demeio Park in Logan, made possible after receiving a grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the aim of which is to ‘allocate funding to not-for-profit community groups to enhance their capacity to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Queensland communities’.

The grant will give Wildlife Queensland the opportunity to enhance the ecological and aesthetic potential of Demeio Park, degraded after years of human interference and urban development. The project also provides an opportunity for the wider community to be involved in improving a local area which they can enjoy for many years to come, and gain knowledge and skills in ecosystem management.

Situated right next to Berrinba Wetlands and within the Karawatha to Flinders Peak Corridor, this area provides critical habitat and connectivity to a diverse range of species which will directly benefit from the project’s objectives.

The project will be completed in two phases, the first of which will involve a number of ecological assessments to determine which flora and fauna species inhabit the project site and which ones should and shouldn’t be there. With the help of volunteers and experts, these assessments will be conducted with a focus on bird and amphibian species and in particular, species classed as threatened under the Nature conservation Act, such as the wallum froglet, Crinia tinnula.

These assessments are essential in determining which rehabilitation techniques will provide the best ecological outcome.

The second phase will involve weed control, revegetation schemes and the installation of nesting boxes.

Conducting habitat rehabilitation creates the potential for a resilient and self-sustaining ecosystem with an improved structure, species composition and function, which can be integrated into the larger landscape and support sustainable livelihoods.

As a non-for-profit organisation, Wildlife Queensland is dependent on volunteer assistance and believes that the best outcomes are achieved when the community itself contributes. Get Ready for the Storm Season Logan!

Now that the weekends are warm and dry, it’s the perfect time to prepare your house for the upcoming storm season.

Take a few minutes to check out your roof and gutters. Do you have any cracked tiles or broken ridge capping? If you do, then now is the time to get them fixed.

Are your gutters clean or full of winter leaves? They will need cleaning out.

Residents are reminded that the SES members are volunteers and are not professional roof repairers.

They will do a temporary repair to your roof if they can, however they are not to be called to come out to clean your gutters for you.

Do you have trees or branches growing over your roof? Can you trim back trees that may break or fall in high winds?

The main reason the State Emergency Service is called to help residents during storm events is for “Water coming in through the ceiling”. This is generally caused due to the above issues not being attended to pre storm season.

When it rains heavily the water gets in through the cracks in the tiles and drips into the ceiling space. If you have insulation, the insulation slowly absorbs the water like a sponge, getting heavier and heavier.

Eventually the weight of it will cause the ceiling to collapse, causing considerable damage to the ceiling and furniture below. Sometimes if there is no insulation the water will seek out the lowest point to escape, often the light fittings, resulting in calls to the SES of “water coming out of my lights”.

If you see a wet patch on your ceiling and the plaster board beginning to bulge, this is usually water pooling above. The best thing you can do is take a wooden (Never metal) skewer or handle of a spoon and pierce the ceiling allowing the water to escape. Suggest you have a bucket ready to catch what may be a lot of water. This may seem excessive however it is better than having the ceiling collapse.

When your gutters and down pipes are full of leaves they also soak up the water and block the small vents in your gutters which are designed to let the water escape if it’s over flowing. When the

Go Duckling’s Family tips

Joyous Swim School has recently opened in the suburb of Underwood, boasting a heated above ground pool with the latest Ozone water sanitation technology. They provide swimming instruction for children up to 12 years of age, hydrotherapy and prenatal sessions and will soon be offering pool party packages and a high quality onsite cafe.

Throughout the venue, walls have been freshly painted and non-slip flooring material has been used.

The 15m pool has a depth of 1.1m and is heated at a constant 33°C. A wide set of stairs allows entry to the pool and disability access is provided with an electric hoist.

Ozone Operated technology provides high quality water sanitation and purification processes, greatly reduces the occurrence of red eyes, itchy skin or rashes.

Parents/carers generally swim with their child until 3 years. Several rows of seating have been provided for adults of older children to observe. Photos or filming is not permitted, with the exception of introductory lessons and baby classes.

Logan Village country music festival a hit

THOUSANDS of people enjoyed a day on the village green in the riverside town of Logan Village on Sunday, September 13.

They had made their way to the park for the town’s annual Logan Country Music and Heritage festival, where they could experience a family fun day accompanied by live music from a variety of performers from the local area and beyond.

The headline act was country music sensation Gina Jeffreys, who performed on the main stage to a warm reception from the crowd.

Elsewhere on the green, children’s rides, a petting zoo, and a host of market stalls added to the fun atmosphere on the day.

Displays of vintage vehicles and machinery and the Logan Village Museum open throughout the event helped ensure there was plenty to see and do, while many enjoyed a Devonshire tea at the village green’s Craft Cottage as well.

The food was another highlight of the event, with a wide selection on offer to tempt visitors’ tastebuds. The choices ranged from woodfired pizzas to specialty food trucks to the ever-popular sausage sizzle, to the Logan Village Lions’ well-known burgers and sandwiches.

The Logan Country Music and Heritage Festival has established itself as a regular fixture on the city’s entertainment calendar.

It began in 2013 as Settlers’ Day, honouring the 150th anniversary of European settlement in Logan Village, and was such a success – attracting more than 5000 people and representing the largest event ever held on the Village Green – that it was decided to keep the festival going as an annual family fun day and music fair.

Shop Local!

One of Gotta Love Logan’s latest initiatives was to encourage our community to shop locally by creating 500 show bags packed with local information, vouchers and goodies. The bags were freely handed out at the Logan Village Country Music Festival.. and they didn’t last long! All bags were gone by 12.30.

We had 75 local business’s participating by offering items for the bag!

This was a community initiative with many people in the community participating. Thank you to the Logan City Chamber of Commerce who ensured the opportunity was shared with their members. Thank you also to the Country Chamber of Commerce for collecting items and assisting with bag filling.

Crestmead Neighbourhood Watch for providing the trailer and for filling bags (and keeping me organised). Thank you PCYC Logan (Marika) for allowing your office to be used as a central drop off and pick up point and Crestmead Community Centre for allowing us to pack the bags in the Centre. Of course, a massive thanks to all the volunteers who filled the bags which was a huge undertaking. I am also thankful to the Gotta Love Logan volunteers who helped with the festival. Our gratitude also goes out to over 70 businesses who participated.

Pride of Lions at Village Expo

The Shaw Street Oval at Yarrabilba roared into life with the Lions Club of Logan Village hosting their inaugural Village Expo.

The free event, designed to introduce members of the emerging Yarrabilba community to existing local businesses, sporting and community groups, attracted 40 exhibitors on the day.

Trade displays, children’s activities, dance and martial arts demonstrations proved popular among visitors and exhibitors alike.

The Village Expo was the brainchild of Lioness Shaani Wigg, who together with her committee pulled together the highly successful event.

Peacekeepers Honoured at Windaroo Memorial Service

About 50 people gathered at Windaroo Memorial Peace Park to commemorate Australia’s Peacekeepers.

Guests paused to reflect upon the contributions of brave men and women who served our nation in peacekeeping missions, and to remember those who did not return.

Australian peacekeepers have been engaged in operations in Iraq, Timor, Kashmir, Cambodia, and the Sinai and have served in Bougainville, the Solomon Islands, the Middle East, Cyprus, Cambodia, Somalia and Rwanda, among others.

Master of ceremonies Mr Leslie (Cracker) Anson, Vice President MBMC Nat HQ, began the reverent service with the Peacekeepers requiem followed by a prayer and a hymn.

Special guest speaker Mr John Burgess, from the Australian Peacekeeper Association, delivered a heartfelt address.

“If the world was a safe place, we would not need peacekeepers” Mr Burgess said.

“Unfortunately, the world is not a peaceful place”.

“We may not be engaged in many wars, but we are engaged in many peacekeeping operations”.

“Today we remember those who have given their lives, those who have come back and those who have suffered for their experiences” he said.

The names of fallen peacekeepers were read aloud, followed by the laying of wreaths and one minute of silence.

The Way We Were

two partners, who promptly took up a knacker's licence so they could butcher injured horses to feed their hungry menagerie.

Nevertheless, sourcing food appeared to be a bit of a problem. One alarming (and supposedly legitimate) ad from a suburban newspaper in 1985 read:

VISITORS to the Bullens African Lion Safari park would have wondered what to say to their insurers if the new car copped a mauling from a lioness.

"Free livestock removal service. Sick or injured cows and horses removed promptly, free of charge. Phone Bullens Lion Park." A case of reading between the lions?

The only problem was, in those largely preairconditioning days, a summertime visit meant the family was bathed in sweat by the end of the visit.

The staff, at least to casual observers not trained in the fine art of keeping wild animals from eating people, seemed oblivious to the threat posed by dozens of giant carnivores wandering around at will.

The most amazing thing about the park was the sight of '70s-era Holdens, Fords and VaIiants cruising through the bush at Yatala, south of Brisbane, surrounded by camels, pictured, and packs of water buffalo, tigers, hyenas and lions.

Sadly, the park closed its gates in 1988, with the 90ha site sold to a company which wanted to develop it as a racetrack.

The idea was quickly sunk by nearby residents concerned about noise, although the roar of angry lions apparently had not been a problem for them.

Dozens of photographs from the time show staff cuddling lions, riding on their backs or, like in this picture, dangling morsels from hands poking through the open window of a Jeep painted in zebra stripes.

Not surprisingly, there were some nasty accidents over the years.

In 1973, an attendant was dragged off by lions and killed in front of a family sitting in their car, and a little girl was bitten on the cheek by a lion.

Striking workers, some of whom said they had been bitten by hyenas and clawed by tigers, were locked out by management at one stage after demanding danger money.

On opening day in 1969, the traffic was bumper to bumper. The lions seemed unconcerned despite such sights being rare on the African savannah.

It paid to heed the park's entry sign, which read: "Keep windows up".

Another time, "Jumbo" the Indian elephant busted out and was found rummaging through garbage bins in suburban Beenleigh looking for a midnight snack.
