How good is that! If you have an idea for a story, please let us know! It can be about the history of a local business, community group, sports club or it could be about achievements or someone who has done something extraordinary!

Gotta Love Logan is a community campaign to remind Logan City of our proud beginnings and to strengthen our community so we, as a community, can be strong enough to push back against the negativity and to abolish the misconceptions others have about our beautiful city and its people.

We are bringing people together with one voice to stand up for Logan City.

Brisbane Antique Centre Loganholme and proud!

Brisbane Antique Centre is possibly one of Logan’s best kept secrets that is gathering both momentum and a following on a daily basis.

The antique super-centre actually opened it’s doors just under three years ago and we still have many locals visiting for the first time telling us that they did not even know we were here.

Those who know where Fernwood Gym (ladies only gym) is located in the large complex just off M1 Exit 30 (the start of Beenleigh–Redland Bay Road) will know where we are as well, as we occupy the entire ground floor of that building.

We are Queensland’s largest multi-dealer antique centre with our very own café as well to make your visit a pleasurable and relaxing one.

“Why Logan?” Is a question we are often asked when we are having a discussion about the choice of our location to anchor this business monolith.

The answer is quite simple on many levels – we live in Logan, our children go to school in Logan, the direct Motorway exposure in Logan, amazing location ideally situated half way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, ample parking in the complex we chose – SO

3 The concept of the antique centre is quite simple – place a whole lot of different dealers with their own individual floor spaces under the one roof and keep it open seven days a week for the convenience of the general public.

Combine this with a lovely Cafe that opens at 7.30AM during week days for breakfast and superb coffee (Aromas) in a friendly and inviting atmosphere and we always see new customers with a look of amazement when they visit.

The diversity of stock is mind blowing, from a $2 old bottle to a $10 000 ring, with anything in between. We cater for all tastes and budgets and you will find treasures such as vintage ceramics, pottery, glass, badges, silver, toys, mantiques (yes – the blokey stuff), clocks, jewellery, stamps, coins and the list goes on and on.

We are privileged to be associated with ERIC KNOWLES (BBC Antiques Roadshow etc) and have already been honoured to have him visit Loganholme once and hope to do this in the near future again. Various props from a particular Pirates movie that is currently been filmed on the Gold Coast have also been supplied by Brisbane Antique Centre and we are looking forward to smiling as we recognise them on the big screen when that movie is released.

As a way of giving back to the local community, we also help various charity shops with appraisal of their donated stock of a vintage or collectable nature to maximise the much needed funds they generate for the work they do. This happens every WEDNESDAY between 9 – 12 in our café and general public are also welcome to bring down their treasures for a COMPLIMENTARY APPRAISAL.

We love the area and we love the people we have come to call our friends as a direct result of opening our doors in Loganholme. Brisbane Antique Centre does attract a lot of interstate and international visitors as well as the local community and we are happy for the added commerce that this brings to other neighbouring enterprises as well.

Tune in to Logan FM (101.1) every TUESDAY as well around 9:15AM to hear our regular talk-back segment where listeners call in with their treasures and we try to help identify what they have in their hands. You will proudly see GOTTA LOVE LOGAN stickers displayed at Brisbane Antique Centre (and on our vehicles), as well as at the Logan FM studio in Woodridge because we all need to get behind and involved with grass roots support of the community in any way we can. Logan Girls Take on International Handball

International Handball came to Logan recently when the NZ Junior Women’s Handball Team attended the Australian Junior Championships held at the Logan Insports Metro Centre at Browns Plains.

Taking the opportunity for some quality game time, they also played a game against the Australian Junior Women’s team. The two teams last met in the final of the IHF Challenge Cup Oceania Qualifiers in Wellington last December with the Kiwis coming out on top at that time.

Included in the Australian team are four players from Logan – Heather Cooper, Lexi Gardner, Mille Loftus and Natasha Lunniss.

Heather (aged 20) and Lexi (19) have been part of the Australian Junior system since 2012, whilst Mille (18) came on board in 2013.

This is Natasha’s (16) first year in the National squad.

Heather and Lexi got involved when they were students at John Paul College where handball, although not a school sport, has a strong heritage. Natasha, currently in year 10 at JPC, is continuing that tradition. Mille has an even longer background as her grandmother played in the Danish team many years ago. But it wasn’t until she saw an local newspaper article about Heather and Lexi’s adventures that her interest was kindled. The sport has taken the 3 older girls all around the world to places as diverse as Spain, Italy, Samoa, Mexico and New Zealand.

Now Natasha will be joining in as the four girls join the rest of their team mates as they head off to Singapore at the end of the year to play a tournament there.

Heather has already taken the next step after she was called up into the Australian Women’s team in May to travel to Kazakhstan to play in an emerging nation’s tournament.

Whilst the Australian women didn’t win the tournament, Heather got some game time and managed to find the back of the net on several occasions.

And the result at Insports Metro?

Unfortunately the Kiwis were victorious once again, coming away with a 12-9 victory. But as usual, it was a great game played with tremendous spirit – all that handball embodies!

27 Loganites signed up with the Gotta Love Logan Team to represent Logan City and conquer anything that True Grit was going to throw at us. True Grit is a military style obstacle course that runs over 10 km with 30 challenging obstacles.

In true Logan Style we showed the people around us just what a caring supportive community we have in Logan City as we helped each other through, over and around each obstacle which is quite symbolic of how we help each other in our community with life obstacles.

We honestly challenged ourselves, did things we thought we couldn’t because of the amazing support we gave each other. We proudly chanted "Gotta Love Logan" and represented Logan magnificently! We put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces.

Quota Eisteddfod is on High!

Quota Beenleigh’s Annual Eisteddfod is set to hit a high note with 15,000 participants travelling from as far afield as Victoria to compete in the categories of music, speech and drama and dance.

The 26 day extravaganza celebrates the Arts by engaging youth to explore their creativity, hone their performance skills, build relationships and have fun.

Since inception in 1986, support for the annual event has steadily grown with several competitors going on to compete nationally and internationally.

Now in its 29th year, former entrants are bringing their students to take part in the eisteddfods.

“Every year we get bigger” said music convenor Kaye Rossmann.

“But there is always room for more competitors, more schools entering from Logan would be great” she said.

The annual eisteddfod is Quota Beenleigh’s major community service programme and primary fundraising event.

Logan Look Back

paid a set amount before being returned to their home islands.

The first shipment of workers arrived in August 1863 on the Don Juan.

The Scheme immediately drew controversy, with town meetings held in Logan to discuss the alleged abuses and kidnapping of the Islanders. The people of Logan were split evenly between those who supported the scheme and those who did not. In the 1873 election the ballot came down to one vote between the candidates; one who supported the scheme and one who did not.

Eventually greater regulation was enforced on the Scheme to limit the abuses against the

One hundred and sixty-two years ago this month, one of the most infamous parts of Australian history began right here in Logan.

Whilst they may be more commonly equated with the sugar plantations of Mackay and Bundaberg, it was on the cotton plantations of the Logan River that the South Sea Island Indentured Worker Scheme began.

With the American Civil War in full swing, the availability and price of cotton began to be affected. The Government, never one to miss an opportunity, offered a range of incentives to land owners to take advantage of the need.

One landowner who availed himself of these was Captain Robert Towns, who would later go on to have Townsville named after him.

Towns began a cotton plantation, called Townsvale on the southern bank of the Logan River to grow cotton.

However, cotton is a labour intensive crop and the area was unable to provide enough workers for the plantation. Towns came up with the solution of bringing in labour from the South Pacific Islands to work the plantations on an indentured scheme. The workers would agree to come here and be

Islanders and there were a number of prosecutions in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court of landowners who had not paid the workers their entitlements. Logan went on to produce cotton that won awards at the Paris Exhibition for its quality.

However, the cotton days were numbered and a flooding Logan River ended them. The

planters turned to sugar and utilized the South Sea Islander workforce until such time as it became obvious that plantations further north could produce double that which could be produced in Logan.

The turn of the century also saw a rise in the White Australia Policy and actions were taken to return the Islanders to their original homes. Men who had married and made homes were ripped from their families and returned to Islands they had little connection to. They took with them the cobbled together language that they had created to communicate in the cane fields of Queensland and to this day the official language of Vanuatu is that language.

It may not be an illustrious part of our memory, but next time you watch Gone with the Wind take a look along the Logan River and remember a time when we had our own cotton plantations!

Giggy: is missing in the equestrian drive area of New Beith after something has mauled to death two other dogs in the yard on the 1st of May. She is fairly small and was wearing an orange collar. Giggy would have been very scared the day she went missing. It was storming and she had witnessed her friends being attacked. Please help us bring her home safe, she is very missed and we will not give up searching for her.

Our cat Mysti got out, on Wednesday 26/11/2014, from our home in Browns plains near the high school. Usually she is back the next morning but she has not yet returned. We are really worried as she is afraid of storms and the night after she went missing was one of the worst storms we had seen in a while.

Garden Clippings

HI everyone and hoping you are all well. This month we will take a general look at the importance of mulching your gardens. Please always seek advice if you have, or suspect, white ant infestations or when considering mulching in gardens that adjoin buildings.

Why mulch ?? * It is a great way to conserve water by keeping the soil moist and restricts the drying out of the top of the soil from winds and sun which in turn ensures easier water penetration throughout the soil from the next watering, or hopefully rain. Mulching can reduce the amount of watering by 50-60% on overage!! * It saves a lot of precious time and money on weed control by inhibiting weed seed germination and weed growth. * Helps control soil temperature by keeping the warmth from the sun in during winter and the night time coolness in for many hours during hot days.

Bark can also "wash" away quite easily.

Health on a budget The principle philosophy underpinning Inspiring Habits is that life is a reflection of our actions. These actions, initiated by inspiration and guided by motivation, define who we are, and are sustained only through habit.

Research suggests that at least 40% of our daily activities are conducted through habit.

Building positive habits is the difference between happiness and dissatisfaction, wealth and lack, health and enervation.

When you are on a tight budget, meal planning and grocery shopping have their challenges. When you are on a tight budget and are dedicated to eating wholesome and nutritious foods, these challenges are amplified. Having lost 52kg whilst studying at university for six years, and raising a family with two young boys, planning has been essential to my good health.

The following suggestions and ideas are my top ten tips to help you to find good health on a budget!

1. Eat wholefoods Wholefoods are significantly cheaper and healthier than processed foods.

2. Enjoy seasonal produce At the peak of its supply, produce flavour and health benefits are maximised whilst production and distribution costs are minimised.

3. Source seasonal produce from farmers markets and local farm gate sellers Eating locally grown foods has significant benefits for the consumer, grower and community – flavour, nutrition, cost

efficiency, local economy and the environment…

4. Meal plan around local specials and seasonal produce Instead of shopping for your meal plan, plan your meals around what is in season and on sale.

5. Prepare your own food Keep it simple to save money and save your health. Meal plan, eat wholefoods, eliminate packaged foods, cook double batches, repurpose leftovers, discover herbs and spices…

6. Keep hydrated with water It is cost and kilojoule free!

7. Grow a selection of your favourite herbs, fruit and vegetables The benefits of backyard gardening are endless! Cost, nutrition, activity, taste, food safety, environment, waste, pride…

8. Keep an organised fridge and pantry Reduce waste and improve your health by storing food safely, rotating stock and having quick access to healthy foods.

9. Utilise your freezer for purchasing and cooking in bulk Well executed bulk buying will save you time and money. Compare unit prices, understand wholefood storage requirements and shelf lives, purpose buy (not impulse) and time purchases well with regard to sales, storage space and requirement for item. Cooking and freezing home cooked healthy meals also minimises waste, supports bulk purchasing and ensures nutritious meals are on hand when time is pressed.

10. Enjoy a wide variety of cuisines Indulging in global cuisines in their purest state ensures incredible flavour, great nutrition and value for money.

Roast Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Soup (4-6)

Ingredients 1kg pumpkin, cut into 1inch pieces 500g sweet potato, cut into 1inch pieces 1 onion, sliced 3 garlic cloves, whole 2 tsp olive oil 1 tbsp rosemary leaves 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 small red chili, sliced 2.5L chicken or vegetable stock ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste 4 tbsp cream Method Preheat oven to 220°C. Place pumpkin, sweet potato, onion and garlic into a roasting pan.

Add the oil, rosemary, coriander and chilli, and toss the vegetables until they are evenly coated. Roast for 30 minutes or until cooked through and lightly golden.

Transfer the roasted vegetables to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Remove from heat, blend with a stick mixer until smooth, and season with cinnamon, nutmeg salt and pepper. Ladle into bowls. Drizzle with cream.

Serve with Rye Bread.

Like many local residents, we had eagerly waited for the "Pick Your Own" season to officially open at The Berry Patch, Chambers Flat. My two children and I recently took advantage of the beautiful weather and visited with my sister and her daughter.

Of course, a trip to the Berry Patch is not complete without buying a chocolate coated strawberry on a stick or a cone/cup of blended ice cream and strawberries.

Upon arrival, the lovely staff gave us a container and directed us to the area designated for the day’s picking. This section was only a very small portion of the strawberry fields, but seemed enormous to the three children! The plants were full with beautiful bright red berries and we only needed to venture a few metres into the field to fill the container.

Important information:

1. Visit staff to collect container 2. Only pick strawberries from the section marked by bright orange cones 3. No eating strawberries in the patch 4. Be prepared for muddy ground - wear appropriate footwear 5. Keep an eye out for thistles and bees 6. Bring a hat to prevent burning 7. EFTPOS incurs a 20c charge At the farm shop, collected strawberries are weighed and charged at $16 per kilo. Punnets and loose strawberries can also be purchased, along with cheaper punnets of "seconds" and smaller sized "jam" strawberries. It is worthwhile having a browse through the shop - despite its small size, the shelves are stocked

The grassy area in front of the shop is an ideal location for enjoying your treats.

There are several picnic tables and chairs for relaxing, a sandpit and a wooden play fort with a slide.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was lovely to bask in the sunshine and watch the children play.

Even better, three contented children fell asleep in the car or shortly after arriving home...(which gave me time to enjoy the strawberry on a stick all to myself!)

The Where, When, Why & Future of Berrinba Sanctuary

declared as VULNERABLE in Queensland but literally a myriad of hundreds of other species of Aussie Fauna & Flora including migratory birdlife, as well as the Robinson Family. The 3rd generation of the Robinson Family is still in residence there today.

There is an amazing history associated with this property.

It was originally established as a retreat-type area in the 1930s by ROTA and was called Aquarian Health Resort. There was no power or town-water yet the members came & camped, drank the water from Scrubby Creek and helped establish the grounds & buildings (long since eaten by termites) for use as a Bakery, Chemist and Temple and they had their own Printing Press, Café and Picture Theatre with seating for 400.

‘Aquarian Health Foods’ and ‘Mecca Medicaments’ were registered business names and the practice of organic farming was carried out and taught on the land with the produce carted and sold to residents in Brisbane.

Several of the founders are buried in a private cemetery on site.

Most Loganites would know where the Browns Plains Tip and Logan Sports Centre is and would have looked at the bushland on the other side of Browns Plains Road on their way in or out ….. but never known that it is more than just bushland !!

That bushland (200 acres) stretching from 292 Browns Plains Road, north to the Anderson Street / Wembley Road intersection and adjoining the famous Berrinba Wetlands to the east is “BERRINBA SANCTUARY”, a wildlife refuge privately owned by ‘Rosicrucian Order – The Aquarians’ (ROTA) which is an independent ‘non-profit’ organisation whose spiritual beliefs are based on the protection and preservation of nature and oneness with community. Berrinba Sanctuary is a member of Wildlife Land Trust under Humane Society International and also a ‘hard-release’ site for local wildlife carers and Wildcare Inc. The Sanctuary is not only home to a healthy breeding colony of resident Koalas, Powerful Owls and the Wallum Froglet – 3 species now

During WWII many residents living in Brisbane who feared being bombed by the Japanese travelled to the property to camp and called it their home for a time until safe to return to their homes in Brisbane.

The Robinson Family helped in the establishment of the first local area Rural Fire Brigade - the original fire-truck ‘The Blitz’ is still there.

For many years sand-mining along Scrubby Creek was also conducted and many Logan / Brisbane homes would probably have been built using sand from this resource.

This ‘mining’ created a string of artificial waterholes which is now called Berrinba Wetlands ~~ Kudos to the late matriarch of the Robinson Family and Logan City Council for reaching an ‘agreement’ in 2006 ~~ http://www.logan.qld.gov.au/aboutlogan/suburbs/berrinba ~~ to preserve and protect this area for the community and future generations.

Not many Loganites know there are Koalas in the Browns Plains area, in fact even one of LCC’s own Councillors was heard to say “there are NO Koalas in Browns Plains”. So, in keeping with ROTA’s principles and beliefs and promoting awareness in the protection and preservation of nature and oneness with community, over the last few years the property has been opened to the public on the last Saturday of every month for Guided Walks where attendees can experience seeing a real live Koala, as well as other wildlife, living safely in its natural habitat. It is of interest too that for 3 consecutive years (2012, 2013 & 2014) the suburb of Berrinba has had the most number of Koala sightings officially logged, photographed & GPS plotted during the Annual Koala Count Survey Weekend run by Logan City Council. These sightings were all from Berrinba Sanctuary.

Now fast forward to a possible future and Berrinba Sanctuary is being threatened under the “Acquisition of Land Act” as the Queensland Government together with Logan City Council, have ‘desires’ on the remaining 200 acres for the purpose of the proposed southern extension of the Gateway Motorway (?4>?6>?8 lanes not including service roads / interchanges / flyovers - aka Park Ridge Connector). LCC’s future planning also shows they want Low & Medium Density Residential and Commercial / Mixed Industry Business zonings over the remainder of the property but only a small portion along the banks of Scrubby Creek would be retained ‘in conservation’. There will then be NO Koalas in Browns Plains !!

Team Kokoda

So he put out a call to his contacts and soon had his team of four. All came from Logan and by the time the Challenge came around, the youngest would be 56 with 2 of them over 60. So Team Logan, and their motto “Age is no Barrier”, were born. John Briscoe, John Knight and Johanna Roche were to join David on the Challenge.

For over 6 months they went through a weekly program of training that saw them explore the trails of Daisy Hill Forest, Cornubia State Forest, the streets of Daisy Hill, Shailer Park and Cornubia, as well as some of the Challenge course itself. In that time, they put in over 900km in training for the Challenge.

Team Logan also built around them a support crew to assist them in their endeavour. Stewart Cooper, Heather Cooper and Stacey McIntosh provided much needed support through the event.

The Challenge also required participants to raise funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. Each team was required to raise a minimum of $1,600 towards the Foundation to be able to participate in the Challenge.

Team Logan Conquers All Challenges When 61 year old Shailer Park resident David Gardner decided to enter the Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast, he didn’t mess about. The Challenge requires participants to trek 96km through rugged terrain in the Gold Coast hinterland in less than 39 hours!

He determined that to successfully finish the Challenge required detailed planning and excellent teamwork.

There is a good reason behind this distance and time - 96 km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track. Participants (with the help of their support crew) trek a 96 km course that leads along fire trails, crosses 12 creeks and summits 5,000 m of vertical elevation. The goal is to finish as a complete team of four in honour of the spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942: courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.

Established in 2004, the Kokoda Youth Foundation supports young Australians, inspiring them to do extraordinary things. They challenge the Kokoda Kids’ deeply held beliefs, allowing them to explore their limits and abilities, and provide them with opportunities for personal growth.

Transforming the lives of hundreds of 12 to 17 year olds each year, Kokoda Youth Foundation has an inevitable impact on families, schools and entire communities. Embedded in each program, such as the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP), is the philosophy that choices matter - and the effort you apply to each endeavour has a direct correlation to your success and fulfilment in life.

So how did Team Logan go?

After starting at Firth Park Mudgeeraba at 7am on Saturday 18 July, the team crossed the finishing line at the Nerang Velodrome just after 6.30pm on Sunday 19 July. A 35 hour 36 minute trek to finish as a team of four! All members had their own issues to deal with – from ITB (knee / thigh) issues, double vision, back problems, blisters, exhaustion – all with no sleep. Out of the 1120 starters in the 96km Challenge, only 820 finished so this was a fantastic effort from the members of Team Logan.

102And the fundraising? With the support of Logan City Council, Beenleigh Sports Club and many others, Team Logan has raised over $6,000 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation, making them one of the top 5 fundraisers for the Foundation.

Showing to one and all that great things can be achieved in Logan and that Age is no Barrier!

Logan Looks after Lucy… thanks to Helene!

Lucy is a beautiful 20 year old girl who was born with a very uncommon chromosomal abnormality which means she has been severely intellectually disabled since birth. Better known chromosomal abnormalities include Downs Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome and Prader Willi Syndrome.

Lucy’s particular trisomy isn’t covered by any known “syndrome” unfortunately so she is a unique individual.

After a great deal of effort and bureaucratic grief Lucy’s parent’s Brad and Melissa Muggeridge) were able to finally able to get Lucy into full-time care with House With No Steps.

Brad, Melissa and Helene became friends through the Logan Triathlon Club, and over a number of training runs through talking to Brad and Mel about Lucy, it soon came apparent to Helene that she wanted to do something for Lucy. In January, Helene had set a goal to run her first Marathon (Gold Coast Marathon on 5th July ), but by April she realized that she needed a bit more motivation to complete the feat. It was at that point during a training run that Helene committed to running the Gold Coast Marathon for Lucy in order to raise the funds to air-condition Lucy’s house.

Then Helene’s husband, Anthony Fletcher committed to running the marathon with Helene as extra support.

With some nervousness and anticipation, at the starting line, Helene and Anthony finished the marathon in just under 5 ½ hours.

Helene said “It was one of the most toughest challenges that I have done, but just knowing I had the support of my Husband, my friends from the Logan Triathlon Club and Logan River Park Run, as well as many other supporters who had given donations and provided ongoing encouragement, could only keep a smile on my face for the whole 5 and ½ hours.

Flagstone’s Community BBQ

Our story started with a man named Steve Hobbs after posting a question on the Facebook Flagstone Community website which goes like this "Sitting here bored as cause there is nothing on foxtel or free to air, so I thought I would put it out there. (P.S Be nice). “Which is the best streen in this awesome community and why? Which lead to around 56 comments to this simple question

and from there, there a suggestion to have a community gathering was posed hence why our Community BBQ event was organised by a group of local people who believed strongly about this event and worked hard to get it off the ground and running. We had Local business donating 22 different services or products to raffle, some donating 2 or 3 times. We also ran a free door entry raffle. Lots of free entertainment to suit everyone including young talented singers, jumping castle, face painting, PCYC demonstrations and lots of yummy food to purchase like cakes muffins sweets galore.

Of course, a community BBQ wouldn’t be a community BBQ without a sausage sizzle as well as egg and bacon rolls. I was very happy to be a part of this great event which was amazing for a first time effort! I would like to thank the Flagstone community for coming out to meet and greet with others in their community I was sad that I didn't get to meet with Steve Hobbs to thank him personally for asking such a simple question which lead to something as beautiful and amazing as this….

Harry Helps Grandpa Remember raises Dementia Awareness

Logan Village Museum Keeps Growing

THE Logan Village Museum continues to power ahead, enjoying a growth in popularity, visitor numbers and its collection.

She said there was a lot happening in the museum, which was becoming an increasing part of the larger community. “It is being enjoyed by more and more locals as the word gets out,” she said.

Curator Coralyn Cowin recently finished a book on the area’s Anzacs – of which there were a surprising number – and said interest in the museum remained high, to the point where it had recently catalogued its 500th item.

The museum, located in a historic railway fettler’s cottage on the Logan Village Green on River St, has a collection covering the history of the area with exhibits ranging from photos and documents to machinery, household items and artefacts from the WWII Camp Cable Military base which used to be in what is now Yarrabilba.“The local community have been very supportive,” Ms Cowin said, adding their information, knowledge and help had proven invaluable.

Excitement enveloped the Logan Village community this week with the installation of seven historical plaques ahead of next month’s country music festival.

The information plaques, written by Royce Wilson with the assistance of Wendy Duke, are dedicated to the pioneering families who originally settled along the banks of the Logan River.

Placed at intermediate heights so they can be read by children, the plaques adorn the contour of the iconic heritage walk adjacent to the Logan Village museum.

Operation Nighthawk

On the 8th of August 2015 the Logan Village Scout Troop participated in the 33rd Operation Nighthawk. This event was held at Banges Airfield just outside Clifton and attracted a record breaking 2000* Scouts, Venturers and Girl Guides the event is said to be the most popular scouting event ever. (Outside of Jamboree of course!)

The scouts walked a total of 13 Kilometers and participated in 7 activity bases where they practiced first aid, navigation, teamwork, and construction skills.

Sounds easy enough, right?

Add less than minus 1 degree temperatures and pitchblack darkness and it gets a whole lot harder, but even though it was tough the Scouts’ thoroughly enjoyed it.

Logan Village Scorpion Patrol was

made up of 8 Scouts and some of the more experienced Scouts helped out the firsttimers and swapped tips on what to do.

We are happy to say that nobody got lost or injured on the trip (apart from a couple of bruises. Ouch, trees hit hard) and that all of the Scouts were comfortable with the hike.

Overall it was a great experience with lots of crazy and fun memories from jokes by the fire, to singing our lungs out on the car trip it was a great time.

On the lower field pipe bands from far and wide, including the Queensland Police Pipe Band, competed for the honour of being judged the best. And highland dancers tried their best to impress the judges on the upper level.

Supported by both 101.1 Logan FM and 98.9 FM 4EB Scottish Program, the smiles on those attending said it all! Every year Logan's own celebration of Scottish culture gets bigger and better. Now all there's really to say is 'will Ye no come back again?', as we impatiently wait for next year!

We weren't sure how easy it would be to find the park land where the Scottish day in the park was being held. We needn't have worried! Flashes of tartan, visible from a distance, and the unmistakable sound of droning pipes, let us know we'd found the right place!

Feeding our souls with good Scottish food of haggis rolls and tattie scones, we explored the stalls. Selling everything from jewellery and coo money boxes to DVDs, clothes and books, our wallets were often tempted from our pockets by the range on display. Settling in to watch the entertainment we were treated by the band to great music to whisk our hearts back to people and places far away from a beautiful Greenbank Sunday morning. We were then treated to the impressive Scottie dogs, resplendent in their gorgeous coats, performing their routine on command while families sat on chairs or sprawled on picnic blankets to enjoy the show.
