Too Fat

TOO FALL

Angie,

A chance conversation with a friend led her to slimming world ‘I walked through the doors of Slimming World so nervous, but was greeted by the consultant and put at ease straight away.

It really was lovely to hear how easy it was to follow and how I didn’t have to give up all the foods I loved, pasta, pizza, burgers and chips. It’s a cliché but in my case it is absolutely true, Slimming World has changed my life.’

! t a e r g g n i look

“I honestly was shocked at how much weight I had gained and seeing that photograph made me decide once and for all I needed to do something about it.’

A S

If you had told Angie Taylor a year ago that she would have dropped from a dress size 20 to a 12 losing 4 stone to get there she would have laughed at you. Angie has struggled with weight for years and has tried just about every fad diet there is. Resigned to always being overweight it wasn’t until she caught sight of a photograph of herself taken at a festival that she decided something had to be done!

£ Over the last year Angie has ran a 5K run and a few weeks ago did her first Skydive raising over £400 for Butterwick Hospice – ‘a thing I would not have been allowed to do before losing the weight as I really was too fat to fall!’ ‘Now I have reached my chosen target weight and I have seen just how much benefit Slimming World has given to me it's time for me to try to inspire other people who are in the position I was in last year.” Angie will be running her own Slimming World Group from 5th Nov at All Saints Church Hall in Eaglescliffe every Saturday morning at 9.30. Gossip Catches up with

Cattle & Cane Interview with Helen Hammill by James Stevenson

© Gary Walsh Photography

Cattle & Cane are an indie-pop quintet who hail from Thornaby but have been making waves far beyond the North East. We caught up with the group’s charming vocalist and female presence Helen to talk about the journey so far and what the future holds for these bright young stars. Comprising of four siblings; Helen, Joe, Fran, Vin and their friend Tom they’ve went from humble beginnings in the local scene to international touring. Starting in local pubs to having played T in the Park, BBC Radio 2’s Hyde Park festival and now their tour of Germany things keep getting better and better for the fantastic five. With their second album on the horizon and their Christmas homecoming show at the Middlesbrough Empire their soaring success is set to continue. With the heart of their beautifully crafted sound laying in indie-pop territory there are strong sensibilities of folk and country present and on occasion drifting to rock. It’s difficult to simply categorize Cattle & Cane’s indubitably individual and organic sound.

“We started about five years ago now!” Said Helen, “Me and Joe [the lead singer] always did pubs and sang together when we were younger and then Joe was like we need a bass player! We need a drummer! We need a guitarist! So we looked at our siblings and got Fran on guitar and Vin on bass but none of us could play the drums so we got our friend Tom who’s a great drummer. “Joe is the lead vocalist so I say he’s the boss but he says I’m boss. As siblings in the band we argue a lot and everyone asks us how do we manage? But seriously we do get on really well we’re like best friends.” While the band is very much a family affair the musical connection started with them as neither of their parents had a musical

career; with some regret of missing that opportunity their parents encouraged them to be musical. “Our dad pushed us to do guitar lessons and things so we used to do little concerts for him! I never had singing lessons, my older sister did but that was classical which I wasn’t really interested in so skipped them.” The band got their name from the title of a track by Australian band The Go-Betweens that they really liked which has themes of childhood and nostalgia so thought thematically it worked and suited them, the double C alliteration rolling off the tongue helps make the memorable name stick.

10

NovGossip.indd 10

09/11/2016 15:56

GOSSIP Joe generally handles writing duties as an accomplished songwriter outside of the band already after travelling abroad to work with many artists. The band’s lyrical content matches perfectly with the tone they craft. “Joe doesn’t really talk about what the songs are about but I always know! I’m like ‘this is about that girl!’ Haha, but he would never speak about it. It’s all quite personal to him. We have a couple of songs about our dad, including one on the next album. There’s song on the last about our friend that got hit by a car when we were about 10, it was Joe’s best friend really, and it was how he felt as a child.”

See

While finding the international tour a great experience Helen says there’s nothing quite like home as the band are preparing to play the Middlesbrough Empire on December 22nd. “We love performing at home and always try to make the home shows special; we see how much it means to everyone and the support we have here is the best. We don’t play too often locally so we try to do one big show every now and then. It’s just special and you don’t want people to get sick of us not that they would I hope!”

CATTLE & CANE at

Middlesbrough Empire 22nd Dec

In looking for inspiration Helen describes the band as “massive Beatleheads.” “We love The Beatles. Whenever we need inspiration we’ll just put a Beatles album on. Joe really likes Radiohead as well, we love all sorts. I really love country music but the others don’t so I always chill to that.” Perhaps following in the footsteps of their heroes The Beatles the band recently toured Germany; their first major international tour after doing one off gigs in Belgium, Malta and others. “Germany has such a good reputation for music; they really look after you and they really love English bands and everything ran smoothly. It does have that reputation because of The Beatles in Hamburg so early in their career. We had A&R working in Germany doing press and radio shows to introduce us before we went, so we didn’t have a fan base before we went there. It was scary at first but we played a festival called Reeperbahn Festival which is all new bands so everyone going is looking for new music. You don’t really know whose playing apart from Craig David headlined – everyone knows Craig David! - but everyone was looking for something new so that was good.”

© Parkin Photography

Helen described the response to the band’s first album as “amazing and totally unexpected” after seeing it chart in the Top 30 Indie and Top 100 overall – seeing itself between Arctic Monkeys and Adele. Quite the crowd to be in. But not one to rest on their laurels the band has looked to build on their success with their second album by recruiting producer Luuk Cox and creating an evolving sound. © Gary Walsh Photography “We’ve finished recording at ICP Studios in Belgium and then in Malta so in what we wanted to do. Not just replicate the final process of mixing and finishing the first album. It’s a lot more intricate and the last little bits. It was really cool to have we’ve used new instruments like synths Luuk’s perspective and influence, although this time around.” he’s a dance producer first and foremost. Cattle & Cane’s sophomore album will be But we’ve took everything he had to out early 2017 but for an early taste listen offer on board and it was an amazing to the newly released single ‘7 Hours’; a experience. captivating and rhythmic indie belter – an “There’s been a lot of changes, people addictive ditty that you won’t be able to we’ve sent it to have said ‘woahhh’ but turn off. Yarm Rugby Club Y arm Rugby Club was formed in 1997 and while initially the community rugby club was limited to a senior team the club soon grew and in 2007 a new home was found at Wass Way, Eaglescliffe where a clubhouse was built.

Since 2004 the Youth Programme has already produced an England Under 16's player with a significant tranche of county standard players on their way to representing Falcon's Academy and even England at youth level.

Sadly the original clubhouse was lost to fire after an arson attack within months of completion. Many clubs would have found such an event to be fatal but the members of Yarm Rugby Club are made of sterner stuff. Not only was a new clubhouse built but they invested in new improvements in the form of floodlights and a patio seating area.

The main aim of the coming years is to further develop youth and senior teams, extend community links and in the medium term secure a new home capable of hosting the many teams that are now flourishing under the Yarm Club banner.

Yarm Rugby Club offer regular social events held at the clubhouse backed by an increasing number of social members.

Yarm Rugby is one of the area's best kept secrets but the club want that to change and are looking not only for players of all ages, both male and female, but support from local businesses.

The successful under 14’s team recently secured a significant sponsorship deal with Coopers Teesside BMW of Preston Farm which means that the team’s kit will carry Cooper’s logo and their will be a Coopers Teesside presence at the club’s ground. “We’re gaining real traction and the support is snowballing. I can’t wait to see where we are in a year’s time.

Tom Carter, general manager at Bannatyne Health Club in Ingleby Barwick, said: “When Paul told me why he was training so hard, I knew the club had to get involved in some way.

“Callum is in the elite rugby training programme for Newcastle Falcons and is helping with the road running training and Ryan, who has Autism, has inspired me to keep going. He’s often out of his comfort zone when training with me so the least I can do is carry on running.” He is undertaking the JPC Community Farm Iron Man Challenge in order to raise awareness around the JP (James Paul) Connaughton Community Farm, which he and wife Julie are aiming to have up and running within 18 months.

“Staff and members are going to be doing the challenge in the club at the same time as James and Paul are running and cycling through the streets of Ingleby Barwick, and some will even be doing the challenge alongside them.” © Graeme Hetherington (Northern Echo)

The Farm will have eight supported living apartments and four rooms for short respite breaks. He hopes that eventually the site will offer a range of activities for its users, including ‘riding for the disabled’

Spooky

Halloween Ball Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble, another bewitching Halloween Ball without hitch despite attempts of many a witch! This year’s Halloween Ball saw all manner of ghastly ghosts, ghouls and goblins descend on Crathorne Hall for a spooky night of delight all in the name of fundraising. Guests on the night included; Frankenstein’s monster, a family of skeletons, a batch of dead brides that’d leave you breathless among many more creepy costumes. Everyone in attendance was in agreement of the excellent night they had, the spooky and jovial atmosphere was simply infectious. With a very favourable three-course meal, a delightful amount of drink flowing and the splendid sounding band The Bobby Francis Experience had everyone on their feet dancing the night away. All in the name of a good cause the night raised a fantastic £2,263 for the JPC Community Farm. The charity, formed by Paul and Julie Connaughton, is establishing a residential and respite home in Stokesley for those with additional needs. Named after their 16-year-old son James, who struggles with Hypertonic Cerebral Palsy, the JPC Community Farm will offer the highest standard of care for James and others like him giving friends and family peace of mind. We’d like to offer a special thanks to all those in attendance as well as Crathorne Hall, Studford Lodges and BMW.

IN BUSINESS My name is

Gayle Nertney

My name is

Tori Gill

Online marketing company,

which raises company profiles via social media is already working with a number of local businesses including Al Forno restaurant, Swim Buddies and Hilarity Bites Comedy Club.

As a mother of three young children two of which are identical twin boys, I found it increasingly difficult to find nice coordinating clothing for them to wear.

Managing director, Tori Gill, 39, from Darlington who was previously the Commercial Director at Darlington Football Club moved into office accommodation on Skinnergate in the town centre of Darlington in November 2015. She said, “I was working full time for another employer and working on a self-employed basis running tgi MEDIA.”

I often dressed them the same for ease, but loved it when I found coordinating items that they could wear - allowing them to look like they belonged to each other, but also giving them their own identity.

“Starting the business seemed liked a natural thing to do as my client base grew. I therefore took the decision to leave my current employer, rent an office and I took on my first employee in December 2015.”

I was made redundant in early 2016, and started looking at starting my own online store, making it easier for parents to find quality, affordable coordinating clothing without spending hours trailing shops or websites. I spoke with parents, not just of multiples, but of siblings of different ages, and received an overwhelming positive response, and so, in the summer of 2016, Alex & Seb was created. The clothing is of extremely high quality, and mostly organic materials. I’ve spent a lot of time at Trade shows and talking to suppliers, but I’d love to know your favourite brands, how you like to dress your children and what you’d like to see at Alex & Seb.

The company plans to expand further in the next few months and is already working with a number of organisations including Teesside University by offering students placements. Free social media drop-in sessions are also being planned for local businesses, with the aim of empowering other owners to make full use of online tools which are available. After studying for a degree in physiology at Liverpool University I was keen to become more specialised within the healthcare sector and decided to focus on foot care. I have been working as a chiropodist for nearly 10 years now and I have loved every minute of it! I qualified from the University of Huddersfield with a degree in Podiatry and started working straight away for Scholl in Huddersfield, then York. After returning to Teesside to start a family I have enjoyed working in both the NHS and for private foot care centres. I recently decided to start-up my own clinic as I needed the flexibility to work around my family and wanted to set my own standards for patient care. The Foot Care Room is within a modern business centre conveniently situated in Preston Farm Business Park, a location that has excellent road transport links. The newly-converted, ground floor clinic is fully accessible, with toilet facilities and plenty of free car parking.

Stuart Wal North East has talent...

by James Stevenson

T

he triathlon is a gruelling test of endurance and determination that sees entrants compete back-to-back in swimming, cycling, running and then the transitions on top. The sport is a relentless competition that sees the body pushed to its maximum however it is as rewarding as it is punishing; it is the ultimate test of fitness and the feeling of completion is as euphoric as it is exhausting. And it is all in a day’s work for local athlete Stuart Wall who has just returned home from competing in the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Mexico. The ITU World Triathlon Series is the premier competition for the sport seeing the best from around the world competing. For Stuart it was a well deserved privilege to be alongside the best and in finishing in the top 60 as well as in the top ten British competitors he more than proved his right to be there.

“How many people can say they’ve represented their country?” Said Stuart.

“It was an incredible feeling to be there with the best there is. It really gave me a sense of pride; it’s hard to explain it’s a really exciting feeling. I felt it went OK but I wanted to do better, the conditions were really tough it was hot and not what I’m used to.” In only his fourth season of competing in the sport Stuart has represented Team GB twice with the first being in the World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Chicago 2015. “I qualified for Chicago quite late with only five weeks to sort out sponsorships, travel and accommodation so it was a bit of a rush so going into the next season my goal was to not only improve my final result but to qualify earlier.” Qualify earlier he did as Stuart finished 3rd in his Age Group race in Strathclyde, Glasgow giving him plenty of time to prepare for the race in Conzumel, Mexico.

“Competing with the best in Chicago really gave me motivation. It was an experience to draw on and take forward and learn from. Training is really difficult with it being multi-disciplined and then worrying about nutrition on top.

“It really is a case of self-discipline. Some days you wake up feeling exhausted but you need that mental focus and internal motivation really. Getting up at 7am and going for a swim, going to work and going for a run after. Luckily a lot of my friends and family understand it and support me with it. “I’ve had a massive amount of support from my sponsors ERW Ltd, Godleys, Carematters and BainesJewitt solicitors who are all local businesses and without them it would have been incredibly difficult. “I met a great group of swimmers who I train with now helping me out, people who compete at a high level who always podium so that’s helping me out.” On a day-to-day basis Stuart works as Personal Trainer and Master Trainer at David Lloyds which is where his passion for triathlon began after coming from a football and rugby background.

Wall “I had a personal training client who asked for help in training for the Henley triathlon and in the end I decided to do the triathlon, my first, with them and that’s how it came about really! It all went from there.” Chance encounters through his personal training has become a bit of a habit for Stuart as in 2010 he was training a client to prepare for Kilimanjaro and after a member of the group dropped out the opportunity was offered to Stuart with only a couple of months prepare. “You’ve got to grab these opportunities with both hands when they come along. I’ve said I’ve wanted to do something like that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity so I said yes! “I raised £1,500 for Cancer Research so it was an incredible experience. It was phenomenal. Meeting a whole range of people too it really was a life experience. I’ve worked hard to get where I am but I’m really grateful and fortunate for the opportunities I’ve had.” Stuart hopes that his own experiences could inspire others to get involved in not only triathlon but sport in general. “Sports are such a great opportunity for everyone. There’s something for all ages and abilities; it gives a healthier lifestyle and more social opportunities too. It’s not even just competing, swimming is a life skill and there’s a lot of enjoyment to be found in things like going out and cycling with friends.

“You hear a lot about obesity now but if I can inspire one or two to take up a healthy lifestyle then all the hard work is worth it. Playing sports has a misconception of being costly but a healthy lifestyle is free and open to everyone; I think park runs are fantastic – offering competitive and fun runs and to see parents going with kids and getting everyone active is great. I’d definitely like to see more promotion for healthier lifestyles and sports.” Working as a personal trainer for David Lloyds Stuart offers a particular bespoke service to help meet any needs his clients have. “Personal training is quite misunderstood. It’s not just counting reps. Everything is done to meet the client’s very specific needs. Whether that be weight loss, training for particular sports or a particular physique. There’s all the nutritional advice and mental support too.” It doesn’t get any better than asking a personal trainer to help prepare you for a triathlon and then him running it alongside you and later representing his country.

Introducing the all new...

Land Rover Discovery The wait is over!

The long awaited all-new Land Rover Discovery has finally been unveiled before its Spring 2017 launch. The popular and practical seven-seat SUV’s new iteration is more revolution than evolution boasting a range of impressive ground-up redesigns alongside the new features. The Discovery is still the car of choice for the go-anywhere, do-anything lifestyle and it’s British-built to boot. The all new Discovery has seen a complete redesign moving away from the rough, rugged and ready past of the 26-year-old model instead moving more towards the Discovery Sport with a sleek, sophisticated and softer-edged look. It’s not only a modern look as Land Rover’s new aluminium construction means a weight saving of 480kg over the previous model allowing for considerably improved handling, acceleration and fuel consumption. Improving aesthetics hasn’t come at the cost of performance as some long-term fans of the model might have feared. On the contrary the new Discovery can tow an impressive 3,500kg and utilizes Advanced Tow Assist, similarly offroading is improved through All-Terrain Progress Control as well as doublewishbone front suspension, an integral link at the rear and air suspension all coming as standard across the range giving the new model a wading depth of 900mm and an all-around remarkable off-road experience. The entry level Discovery is the SD4 Diesel 2.0-litre model that has 237bhp and 500Nm of torque providing a 0-60mph time of 8.0 seconds, 43.5mpg and 171g/km CO2 emissions. Substantially cleaner than previous models. Joining the 2.0-litre model are a pair of 3.0-litre V6s; a Diesel TD6 with 255bhp/600Nm providing 0-60mph time of 7.7 seconds, 39.2mpg and 189g/km of CO2 emissions whereas the Supercharged Si6 Petrol possess 335bhp/450Nm giving a 0-60mph time of 6.9 seconds but the fuel economy of 26.0mpg and 256g/km of CO2 emissions will make it an expensive option. Land Rover has aimed to make the new Discovery as practical as possible providing a standard boot-capacity of 258 litres but after folding the chairs is capable of a load-bay of a superb 2,406 litres.

Similarly reconfiguring the seating could not be easier as all but the front two seats can be raised and lowered automatically by the central dashboard touch screen or by a smart phone app. Prices begin from £43,495 for the entry-level S trim which provides cruise control, air suspension, heated windscreen and a powered tailgate and is available with the SD4 engine only. The SE trim provides satellite navigation, front and rear parking sensors and leather seats and starts from £49,495. The higherend trims, the HSE and HSE Luxury, bring 20in alloys, higher-grade leather, panoramic roof among a host of other features and begin at £56,995. The SE, HSE and HSE Luxury trims are available for the whole range. Launching Spring 2017 the new Land Rover Discovery will be sure to weather the storm.
